FROM THE EDITOR Our October issue is All About Women and is a great resource for all things Health and Beauty. I am so excited to share with you all of the amazing women who are a part of this issue. Our Community Leader, Katie Crosby, shares her story of how Fidelity Bank is serving the community through many outreach programs. We were also so lucky to bring to you Lacey Osbourne, CEO and President of the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce and her views on how we are socializing throughout the Northshore safely.

NORTHSHORE VO L U ME 1 ¡ I S S U E 2

As you read through this issue, you will read the invigorating stories of cancer survivors and those who volunteer their time to support these women. SUPER MOM

Nicole ES PEY STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOS BY FRANNYS PHOTOGRAPHY

T

There are different views on “having it all.” Some say that it’s impossible and that one area of life will inevitably suffer, while others contend that it all comes down to finding balance. For Nicole Espey, being able to be fully present for her children while still putting her all into her job is a circle completing itself, as one seems to feed the other. “Being a working mom gives me a sense of meaning,” says Espey, who works as the office manager at Anytime Auto Glass, the automotive glass repair and replacement company that she co-owns with her husband. “Now that all the kids are in school full time, working helps occupy my day. I don’t necessarily have to be in the office everyday, but I like to be a part of something that I created. Being my own boss has given me all the feels, and I love that I don’t have to work for someone else. I also love the flexibility that I have because it gives me so many opportunities to spend time with my kids. I don’t have to miss the big things that happen in their lives. I feel that being a mother makes me a better professional, and being a professional makes me a better mother.” Being a working mother is also something that she feels is an important way to set an example for her children. “I love that I get to be a model for my kids. If we work hard in life, we can achieve anything,” Espey contends.

10

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

Married seven years to her husband, David, the couple has three children: Adrianna, 15; Austin, 8; and Adalynn, 5. “If I am pursuing my goals, my kids are seeing me at my best; and it shows them independence. Also, being a working mom has allowed me to manage quality time with my kids more consistently.” Naturally, there are times when the two can be hard to separate; but Espey has learned not to let one subsume the other. “My biggest lesson at work has been to do work while I’m at work and be a mom when I am home. I do not combine the two. If I take my work home, it interferes with who I am as a mom.” Who she is as a mom is what she wants her children to know most—and the foundation for that rests firmly on her faith. “The most important thing in my life is my relationship with the Lord. Without a doubt, I am who I am today because of Him. I am always striving to be who He wants me to be, and that makes me a better mother and a better professional

in my business. I want my kids to know that if we put Him first in our lives, everything will be okay,” says Espey. “We will endure hardships and struggles in our lives, and I want my kids to see my strength in overcoming those obstacles. I want them to know that it is okay to fall—we just have to get up and be better and stronger because of it. I want them to see that love is the most important thing to do in this world, and I want them to see that through me. We are called to love everyone and be the hands and feet of Jesus. I pray that they can see that through what I do and who I am. I want them to remember that in our busy lives, we always took the time to help someone in need. I also want them to remember my imperfections and flaws, and that, as a mom, I always tried my best! I want them to always know that I loved them unconditionally every day a little bit more and remember that my love for them is far greater than they will ever know.” By all definitions, that’s what a mother should be— someone who loves with every fiber of their being and dedicates herself to giving her children everything they need to thrive. She’s fed them and raised them, but she’s also nurtured them to be loving humans who can make the world a better place, one act at a time.

BRIDAL OCTOBER 2020

13

It took guts for Russell Reynolds to talk to Courtney Brondum after seeing some of his buddies get turned down by her; but when he did, he found that the girl he thought was so beautiful was more than just a pretty face. After three years of dating, Russell knew that the colorful butterfly who had winged her way into his heart had forever changed his life, and he wanted to share that life with her. Interestingly enough, when it came time to pop the question, Russell took Courtney’s plans for a surprise and turned the tables. “I’d organized this huge surprise party for Russell in the private room at Pat Gallagher’s 527 in Mandeville and invited both of our immediate families and a bunch of our friends, with an after-party at my parents’ home. Russell looked only slightly surprised, but it didn’t bother me because he’s never been a fan of surprises—I just wanted him to have fun,” says Courtney, who owns Southern Luxe Interiors and is the founder of Butterfly Blessings, while former LSU baseball player Russell is now a private pitching instructor and baseball coach. “Halfway into our dinner, Russell toasts everyone and stands up in the front of the room to give a speech. His speech turned out to be a confession of his love for me and ended with him down on one knee with a ring in his hand.”

14

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

Eyes filled with tears, Courtney said yes, fully aware of the irony of the situation but utterly overcome with joy. After nearly two years of careful planning and then last minute re-planning to accommodate the restrictions of COVID-19, Courtney dressed in an elegant white jumpsuit on June 20, 2020, to join Russell in exchanging their vows amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Calichi in St. John, USVI. As twelve of their immediate family members watched, the couple proclaimed their commitment to one another and were pronounced man and wife, confident that theirs was a love to last a lifetime. “Against all odds, I married my best friend after having to cancel our original wedding plans in Colorado,” Courtney recalls. “That moment is one we thank God for and a moment we will never, ever forget. It was spontaneous, raw, joyful, emotional, intimate, stress-free, and so incredibly special. Seeing our family come together to support and celebrate us in the midst of all the chaos overwhelmed me completely. Life has a funny way of throwing curve balls, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. It gave us our story, one that is unlike anyone else’s; and for that, we are forever grateful. On that day, love won.”

16

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

Love did indeed win; and after exchanging their first kiss as newlyweds, Russell and Courtney joined their guests for a reception, dining on a selection of delicious foods that included prime cut steaks and succulent local lobster. The love surrounding the occasion was deepened by every speech that was given, each word spoken filled with heart and fully supportive of the happy couple. Further sweetening the event, the newly married Reynolds’ cut into a beautiful cake decorated in butterflies before each of them brought levity to the moment by unceremoniously shoving cake into one another’s faces. Now back home in Covington, the pair is still trying to decide on a location for a honeymoon sometime in the near future and eagerly anticipate celebrating their love with their entire group of friends and family—at which point Courtney plans to wear the wedding dress that was intended for their original ceremony. It’s something to look forward to in the midst of all the madness, and yet another reminder that love always wins the day.

COMMUNITY Leader BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

Katie

CROSBY

The Chairman of the Board

“One of our core values is community, and we believe that our role as a community bank is to give back to those communities that we serve.”

Here for Good. It’s a mission statement that has driven Fidelity Bank since its founding in 1908 and one that its Chairman of the Board takes to heart in her own life, making Katie Crosby the perfect person for the job. When Crosby joined the Fidelity Bank Board at their invitation in 2003, she took on the role of director, becoming the first female in its history to hold the position. She was also significantly younger than her fellow directors; and while those two factors could have worked against her, Crosby broke the glass ceiling and proved that she could not only be an asset to the board but be a true leader, as well. Three years later in the summer of 2006, she became board Vice Chair before rising to the position of Chair in August of 2010. Over the past ten years, she has kept the board engaged and informed about the workings of the bank and how to better its processes as it serves the community, collaborating with the CEO to navigate the present while simultaneously planning for the future of the company. “I work with board committee chairmen, plan board meeting agendas, and represent Fidelity in the community through community service, board service, and participation in various forums,” Crosby says, further enumerating some of her duties. Additionally, she serves on the New Orleans Branch of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank. OCTOBER 2020

21

As busy as her schedule may be, however, Crosby is passionate about her job—and even more so about the ways it allows her to be involved in community service. “Fidelity encourages all of its employees to be actively engaged in their communities, Crosby says. “One of our core values is community, and we believe that our role as a community bank is to give back to those communities that we serve.” For Crosby, that means serving on the boards of LCMC Health, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, and The Selley Foundation. Over the past several years, she has also served as Board Chair of WYES-TV, Habitat for Humanity, and LCMC Health in addition to being a past president of the Junior League of New Orleans. “I feel strongly about these organizations and their missions. Our time is precious and limited, and my philosophy is to give my time to organizations that speak to my passions.” Mirroring the mission statement of the company she works for makes Crosby a living, breathing example of

what conscientious business can

accomplish—and being at the helm gives her the opportunity to set a standard. Holding to that standard, Fidelity has proven to be an unwavering advocate for communities, offering support through volunteerism, the donation of financial gifts, and granting funds for education. “We focus our giving in three areas: home ownership, financial literacy, and arts and culture,” Crosby explains.

22

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

Truly, they are a company with a soul for giving back, participating in Habitat for Humanity home builds, fundraising walks, diaper deliveries, and Halloween costume collections. Fidelity is also proud to be the official bank of the Zurich Classic, which supports the Fore Kids Foundation and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation. In addition, they were recently the first local business to donate to the United Way COVID-19 fund for providing grants to hospitality workers. “I’m especially proud of the bank’s Community Partner program,” Crosby says. “This program was designed for non-profits and offers financial services combined with social media promotion, volunteer support, and an annual financial gift. It’s a great way for us to give back and live our mission of being Here for Good. In addition, our P.O.W.E.R program supports woman in business. In less than three years, the program has grown to over 1000 members.” Clearly, Crosby has much to be proud of as the Chairman of the Board. She’s sitting in a position to look at everything her company is doing in the world and see that it really is doing what it set out to do: be Here for Good.

Active with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a member of their Committee of 100 and the Accreditation Board in addition to being an active member of the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), Osborne dedicates herself to being the best possible leader for her members and facilitating relationships. “I am a connector of people: small business owners, service organizations, healthcare, elected officials, government support staff at all levels, bankers, developers, and many more.” Naturally, her work brings her into contact with a great deal of people—and COVID-19 has changed that dramatically. The virtual world has become her new means of conducting business, from meetings to seminars and even ribbon cuttings. Even with such creative workarounds, however, there’s still no denying the fact that there is no substitute for faceto-face interaction. “A lot of us miss that human contact,” Osborne notes. Unsurprisingly, the lack of contact and the health restrictions

regarding

social

gatherings

has

brought events and fundraisers to a halt—both of which severely impacted the chamber’s budget. Still, Osborne and her team at the chamber have managed to keep the needs of their members at the top of their priority list. “Our partnerships with other organizations as well as government staff and elected officials have strengthened over the past months during this crisis. In partnership with the North Shore Community Foundation and St. Tammany Corporation, we offered a series of convening meetings entitled ‘Corona Conversations,’” Osborne says. “Six topics were presented in 90 minute sessions on our YouTube channel in an effort to have factual conversations including some of the immediate and long term economic realities of the pandemic.”

Women Women’s Health + Beauty SURVIVOR STORIES

OCTOBER 2020

35

Marie Campo

Marie Campo has 14 years in her rearview mirror since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. It’s a long time to have healed, a long time to rejoice and be thankful for the life she’s been given. She’s been doing precisely that, donating much of the time she’s not spending at her job in the mortgage industry to cancer support organizations including You Night; Compassion That Compels; and Faith, Hope & Fashion as well as Habitat for Humanity. “Finding a sense of belonging and paying it forward is the best medicine for anyone,” says Campo. “My journey through cancer has opened so many doors for the good in my life, and the women I have met over the years have been my inspiration and an incredible motivation in keeping me moving forward in a positive way. They help keep my faith strong.” Married with two children and one grandchild, her family has also been a source of strength; and Campo is cherishing every moment that has come since the diagnosis that changed her life. Quoting Bob Marley, she says, “You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.”

I’M A SURVIVOR Cheryl Dedinger

Ten years ago, Cheryl Dendinger’s life was changed by a breast cancer diagnosis. Nine years ago, it was changed again when she officially went into remission. Married 35 years with two children and a career that keeps her busy, being a cancer survivor is just one part of who she is. Nevertheless, it’s a part that shows how incredibly strong she is; and it’s a part of her life that has taught her the importance of relying on God and having a support system. “I learned that it’s crucial to stay positive and believe in God, “ she says. “Keeping a strong faith in God and keeping a positive outlook helps your mind and body heal. It’s also important to learn to let people help you. Letting others help is also a healing process for them. People don’t know what to say or do, but letting them help in some way—whether it’s cooking, driving you to appointments, or even just sitting with you and talking—will help both you and them with the healing process. This is how they can cope with it. Lastly, I learned to enjoy life. Life is too short to miss out on anything.”

Victoria Lopez

When Victoria Lopez was diagnosed in 2017 with metastatic breast cancer, finding out that the military base where she had grown up was plagued by toxic drinking water made all the pieces fall into place. It gave a clear answer to a question that often has none. Even knowing that her particular cancer has no cure and is only treatable, she still finds joy and places her faith in God to carry her through. “He has never failed me, and I trust Him in all ways,” Lopez says. The mother of three children and “a lot of grandkids,” Lopez counts herself as richly blessed—and her husband, Jesse, is a particular source of strength, love, and encouragement even on the worst of days. Fortunately, she’s also found a great community in the women of You Night. “We share joy in the midst of pain, peace in the midst of frenzy, and love that exceeds all pain,” she says. “God has blessed me with a strong support system in You Night, and the sisterhood has changed my life.” As someone who has always loved being creative, she loves to cook, garden, and making things to give to others. “My biggest stress reliever is creating something and having someone find joy in it.”

I’M A FIGHTER Deborah Tonguis

As someone who lives vibrantly, being diagnosed with Stage IV oropharyngeal cancer on New Years Eve in 2014 could have stolen the color from Deborah Tonguis’s life. But three months of chemo and radiation brought her the happy news of clear scans in March 2015; and since then, she’s been living every moment to its fullest and proving that she hasn’t just survived—she’s thrived. A passionate lover of pets, Pilates, and all things artistic, the retired educator now spends a great deal of time working with other women in the midst of their own cancer battles as a painting instructor for You Night’s ScArt Program in addition to volunteering with a women’s support group called Bloom at the Healing House in Covington. She’s been through the fire and can offer advice to others— especially women faced with cancer. “It’s important to tell people about your cancer diagnosis,” Tonguis advises. “Our natural instinct is to suffer in silence, but people want to support someone they love! Let them bless you with their kindness and prayers. It will help you heal more quickly and transform a frightening and painful journey to one balanced out with beautiful moments of connection and peace with friends and family.”

LCMC Health Urgent Care provides flu shots for patients 4 years of age and up, flu tests, and COVID-19 tests. To protect yourself and others, it’s important to get a flu shot before flu begins spreading in your community. For us in Louisiana, flu season runs from October through February. Similar to COVID-19, influenza is contagious and is passed along by coughs, sneezes, and touching contaminated objects or surfaces. Even if you get a flu shot, be sure to take everyday precautions to keep the flu away such as frequent hand washing and covering your cough. At LCMC Health Urgent Care, flu shots are covered by most major insurance plans. In addition to cold and flu symptoms, we treat minor illnesses and injuries for patients age three months and up. Conditions treated include: ear, eye and infections; fever; minor cuts that may need stitches; broken bones or simple fractures; severe sore throat; sprains and strains; vomiting and diarrhea; and more. Should I be worried about coming into an urgent care facility? Many people have concerns about visiting an urgent care facility. However, it is quite safe and definitely outweighs the risks of not receiving proper care for your illness or injury. LCMC Health Urgent Care is closely following all CDC guidelines to keep our facilities safe for both our patients and staff, and our doctors and medical professionals are working hard to maintain the highest level of cleanliness and safety. In addition, because we are experiencing lower traffic, there are fewer patients in the waiting room, which allows for proper social distancing and the ability to be seen quickly so you can get back to your home sooner to recuperate.

Check-In

Virtual Visits

LCMC Health Urgent Care Safety Measures These are just a few of the core safety measures we are taking to ensure your safety and offer you peace of mind. Strict cleaning and disinfection protocols are always in place and require frequent, aggressive sanitizing of all surfaces in our clinics. Online check-in and registration enable patients to schedule their visits and fill out patient information remotely to facilitate safe social distancing. Each patient that comes to LCMC Health Urgent Care for a visit is asked to please remain in your vehicle and call the clinic to either check-in or let the staff know that you have arrived for your appointment. Patients with COVID-19 symptoms are immediately isolated into a designated COVID-19 room. For those who prefer to “stay at home”, a “Virtual Visit” gives patients the option of using their home computer or mobile device for a “faceto-face” video exam. Just go to LCMChealthUrgentCare.com and select “Schedule a Virtual Visit.”. For more information, visit www.LCMChealthUrgentCare.com

Amanda

Delchamps

“Breathe. The world is going to feel like it has come to a complete halt and as though life is over—but it’s not. Find a doctor or treatment center that makes you comfortable and know that it’s okay to seek a second opinion. You don’t have to tell everyone, but tell the most important people in your life: your family, your friends, and your employer. You will need their support. And if anxiety and panic are setting in, seek help and counseling. Having a clearer head will help you cope.” That’s the advice that Amanda Delchamps would give anyone else facing cancer, now that she’s been through the experience herself. The mother of a five year-old with a marriage that is still creeping its way toward a tenth anniversary, cancer is the shadowy figure that could have taken that all away from her when she was diagnosed with hormone-positive and Her2-positive breast cancer in 2013—and it nearly did. Treatment threatened her chances at having children, but her next miracle after remission came with the birth of her son in 2015. Now, she’s helping other families facing challenges in her work with Social Services and is living proof that faith, hope, and love can conquer anything.

I’M A WARRIOR Joy Kampen

Retired from a career in the legal profession, Joy Kampen’s soul is one that really breaks free when she’s dancing. While she was diagnosed not once but twice with different forms of cancer—the first, a melanoma in 1998; the second in 2009, when she found that she had DCIS—Kampen never lost a step and went on dancing. As devastating as her breast cancer diagnosis was, she still found reasons to be thankful: the cancer hadn’t metastasized and was removed by a bilateral mastectomy without the need for radiation or chemo. Now, she’s become an Alum Director for You Night, having gone through the programs herself. She’s seen the impact that having support makes and is proud to be a part of making that difference. For other women with breast cancer, she offers this advice: “I have known many women with breast cancer who were given the choice to have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, and they chose a lumpectomy. My advice would be to have a mastectomy to avoid the possibility of recurring breast cancer. It is too much both physically and emotionally to go through it again.”

tara Huguet

Despite a diagnosis of Stage II breast cancer in 2006 and the subsequent surgeries and treatments that came after, the absolute joy that Tara Huguet finds in life is absolutely undeniable. With more than a decade behind her as a triumphant survivor of a battle that left her scarred, tired, and often feeling like a shell of her former self, she’s an even stronger woman than she might ever have realized. She’s now using that strength to help other women battling various forms of cancer and working as the Administrator and Finance Assistant for You Night Events. She credits much of her healing to her family—especially her husband, who stood by her side and always told her how beautiful she was and still is. Her faith in God is incredibly important to her, as well, giving her the strength to carry through challenges that could have overwhelmed her. “I would advise anyone newly diagnosed with cancer to trust in God, rely on family and friends, and accept the fact that others do want to help,” she advises. “They are suffering from your diagnosis, too. Also, look for the positive effect that cancer has had or will have on your life.”

I’M A SURVIVOR Rhonda Ebel

“I treat each day as a gift and make it count. I remain strong in my faith and believe in the power of prayer. I stay positive, and everyday I try to do something that brings love and joy into my heart and have never, ever allowed my journey to define me. I live my life to the fullest and respect my body when it needs rest. I remind myself that I am brave, worthy, and loved.” That is how Rhonda Ebel has stayed strong over the past five years since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. In addition to her faith, the love and support of her family saw her through the next year of treatment; and she was officially in remission in August of 2016. The retired hairdresser chooses to live her life to the fullest, enjoying time with her family and going on vacations, gardening, listening to music, singing, dancing and sharing an act of kindness with someone every single day. Just as she said, she’s living one day at a time, treating each day as a gift and making it count.

WOMEN’S HEALTH & BEAUTY

Ten Ways for Women to Stay Healthy 1. Maintain a moderate and regular diet plan

Eating till you fill your stomach fully is a cause of major abdominal hazards. It is advised by the health experts to eat frequent meals and do not indulge in eating too much at a go. A diet should consist of every essential nutrients including fats (in limited amounts) too.

2. Do exercise in a consistent manner

Lifting heavyweight instruments is instructed only when you are capable of doing so. Normal free hand exercises and doing lightweight gym is enough to attain fitness goals.

3. Sleep well

Sleeping disorders can lead to major health risks, more so when you sleep on your stomach. A good amount of sleep is also necessary to remain fit and healthy.

4. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol or tobacco

If, at all you cannot avoid the consumption of these things completely, it is advised to consume them in lesser quantity. Excessive intake of anything leads to an unhealthy approach; same is the case with alcohol and tobacco.

5. Wear a Seat Belt or Helmet

Buckle up whenever you’re in a motor vehicle. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates seat belt use saved 75,000 lives between 2004 and 2008. If you ride a motorcycle or bicycle, wear a helmet. The NHTSA reports that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in 2008. Wear a helmet when you skate, ride an ATV, ski or snowboard, too.

6. Take care of your emotional self

It’s not at all a worrying factor if you are an emotional snob. It only means that you are capable of reciprocating your thought process well. So you should never suppress your feelings as it may lead to chronic depression and that in turn may not allow you focus on a healthier life.

7. Keep stress and tension at bay

The worries and tensions of life cannot completely forego a normal human being under any circumstances. You should always meditate and do yoga to maintain the calmness of the mind and soul. We cannot live our life without stress but deal with it through a positive attitude can surely help us in overcoming the situation well.

8. Build stronger relationships

In the midst of attaining greater heights in life, we often forget that there are some people in our lives whose presence matters. We take them for granted and sometimes bear the agony of losing them too. This hurts us a lot and has a direct impact on our health. So, people should build the relationships stronger for the sake of remaining healthy.

9. Keep a separate work and private life

All the workaholics suffer some kind of stress at work which they have to deal with on a regular basis. Though this is quite a normal issue, the problem begins when people try to mix the work life with their personal lives. This situation can create tension between the family members which will ultimately lead to a negative impact on your health.

10. Maintain proper timings in every case Whatever you do in your life- from eating to sleeping to hitting the gym also, maintaining a proper timing and regularity is always recommended. Even if you do all the things right but on a haphazard schedule, then the effect it creates on your health shows up in years to come, if not promptly.

Whitney Arch

It’s not often that children save their parents, but that’s exactly what happened when Witney Arch’s youngest son was 19 months old. Miraculously, the toddler found her breast cancer at its earliest detectable stage in November of 2017—a mere three months after a previous mammogram had come back with a clear reading—giving his mother a fighting chance at life. Three years later, the aggressive grade 3 cancer is gone; and Arch is now working in children’s ministry at St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church in Mandeville in addition to being the Director of the Northshore You Night. Throughout her battle with cancer, Arch’s faith kept her strong—as did the love and support she felt from her friends and family. “Both when Beau was born and when I was diagnosed, I lived by the motto ‘Faith Over Fear,’” Arch says, referencing her son’s diagnosis at birth with a rare disease called Sturge Weber Syndrome. “I felt completely wrapped in love and prayers by my friends, family, and church. I found strength that I never knew I had, and it changed me. I have a greater appreciation for health and life, and it made me see the good in so many people. The power of prayer and faith got me through many dark days.”

I’M A FIGHTER Noel Hammac

While she might never have heard the word “cancer” from her own doctors, Noel Hammac has seen the devastation that the diagnosis has caused close friends. Seeing their bravery in the midst of their battles, Hammac was inspired to “bully” her way in to the You Night programs as a volunteer, making herself available to do anything that needs doing for their runway shows each season. “I first was introduced to You Night when two friends walked in the show in 2016, and I loved seeing how these women could be made to feel beautiful and vibrant again,” Hammac recalls. “I told my friend that I needed to help. She found a spot for me in the dressing room, helping women change outfits during the show. Now, I have officially proclaimed myself the ‘Do Girl’—if they need it done, I do it. “ As an OB/GYN nurse, Hammac sees the miracle of life happen on a daily basis. But as a volunteer with You Night, she gets to be part of a different kind of miracle. “I love having a small part in making these women feel like they are more than their diagnosis. They are beautiful. They are alive. They are woman, hear them roar!”

At home The Pettiette Family Home | Story by Liesel Schmidt There’s a feeling of heritage at the Pettiette home, an air of old establishment that gives the distinct impression that the two-story house has been sitting on that exact plot of land for generations. Surrounded by lush green landscaping and encircled by a thicket that grants them both privacy and seclusion from the busyness of the outside world, the property is a unique one—especially when one factors in the ways that the Pettiette family has used it to create their very own farm. Fruit and berry trees, organic gardens, laying hens, and various other animals including a milk cow named Natalie, all call the land their home. These things make the sprawling estate a self-sufficient enclave that has taught the entire family about the importance of respect for animals and how to harvest food from its most basic sources.

Farm life may be at the very soul of the design of the home—which, despite its heritage home look, is actually quite new and was only completed in 2017—but there’s also a clear love of contemporary design, with open floor plans and fixtures that are elegant yet functional. Outside, the home has large white columns that span the full height of its two stories, with front porches on both levels whose ceilings are painted in the Carolina tradition of using haint blue. While the main portion of the house is sided in white Hardie plank, the wings are clad in brick, giving it the look of a structure that has been added on to over the course of years. Its crowning glory is a standing-seam bronze metal roof, with a large cupola whose windows pour natural light into the house. All of it combines to create an aesthetic that puts one in mind of plantation home, only modernized and fitted with features that give a nod to the farmhouse style. “I’ve always admired the timeless architecture of 19th century Southern homes that will stop people in their tracks, even after 100 years,” says Ashley Pettiette, who shares the home with her husband, Benjie—an industrial contractor— and their three young children.

The kitchen is a chef’s dream, boasting an 8’x12’ “hidden” pantry built into the cabinetry that has its very own butcher-block prep counter. Two 8-foot islands offer plentiful space for cooking and meal prep as well as homework time and, of course, entertaining. Crowning the custom inset cabinetry are white Bianco marble countertops, accented with white subway tile backsplashes. Naturally, the appliances are top of the line: a Thermador suite that includes a gas range and refrigerator/freezer as well as two dishwashers. In keeping with the modern farmhouse design, the main sink is a 38” Shaws Original fireclay farm sink with a chrome Perrin and Rowe faucet.

Among Ashley’s favorite places in the home is the upstairs hallway just under the cupola. “It’s always filled with light, even on the cloudiest day,” she says. That same cupola is a curiosity to visitors, a unique feature that never fails to capture attention. “People always see it and ask, ‘What’s up there, at the very top?’ It’s great because it adds a great deal of character to the exterior of our home as well as to the interior. It’s different and unexpected.” Different and unexpected are two words that could well describe much of the interior of the home. Shiplap covers the walls of the hallways, breaking up the monotony of smooth walls in the rooms and adding to the modern farmhouse feel. The floors throughout the main living areas are also a notable feature: wide-plank antique dirty-top pine that was reclaimed from a cotton mill in Alabama, complete with dings and saw marks that tell the story of its history.

From the brick driveway leading up to the front door to the stone pool area in the backyard, every square inch of the home bears Ashley’s fingerprints, despite the fact that she was expecting her twins on bed rest while the bulk of the work was being done. The thoughtful design, the clear understanding of space planning, and the absolute attention to detail are hallmarks of Ashley’s architectural background—not to mention her aforementioned love of heritage homes. While it could easily have become a project too precious to live in, the elegance of the finishings used throughout each space is balanced out by durability and the ever-present desire to create something lasting and livable.

As one might imagine, the master suite is an absolute retreat. Creating a marblewrapped sanctuary, the floors of the master bath are polished Carrara marble tiles laid in a herringbone pattern, while the shower is lined with hexagon Carrara marble tile. Carrara marble wainscoting traces the entire space, and Thassos marble countertops and tub decking complete the picture. Whatever room one might venture into, there’s clear design to be found and appreciated. At the heart of it all, however, love and family are written into the blueprints.

SUPER MOM

lindsey

MELERINE STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOS BY LINDSEY TASSIN

t

There’s nothing that reinforces the wonder of motherhood more than seeing a newborn with their mother, and that’s something that Lindsey Melerine gets to experience every time she goes to work. A post-partum nurse at Slidell Memorial Hospital, Melerine has been practicing since 2006. “I wanted a career where I felt fulfilled and challenged, and I chose nursing because of the enormous variety within the profession,” she says. “There are so many different avenues that it is almost impossible not to find your niche, and I’ve found that helping new moms is definitely where I’m meant to be. I love teaching my patients about newborn care and the post-partum process our bodies go through.” As a wife and the mother of two children, her work isn’t done when she leaves the hospital. In fact, hers is a job that never really stops and has no defined shifts. While nursing is generally a very time-demanding job, Melerine keeps her family a priority by working on a part-time basis, putting in 12-hour shifts twice a week. “It’s the perfect balance for me because I get to be present for all of my kids’ school functions and extracurricular activities while I also have an extremely rewarding career,” Melerine explains. “Being a mom is the most joyful and rewarding thing I have ever done with my life. It’s also the most challenging. As a working mother, I have the opportunity to show my kids a mom who worked hard for her career. I feel like it teaches them that they can accomplish great things as long as they are willing to put in the work. On the days I work, they love when I come home and tell them about my day taking care of new moms, and my daughter always has lots of questions about the babies.”

68

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

Much like motherhood, nursing is a job with new questions, new challenges, and new things to learn each day—and Melerine welcomes it. “Over the course of my career, I’ve found that it’s important to never stop asking questions! I’ve been a nurse for 14 years, and I still discover something new every shift. There is always more to learn, and the day a nurse stops asking questions is the day they should retire,” Melerine contends. “I’ve also come to realize that, as a nurse, I am my patients’ advocate. It is my responsibility to be their voice. I never realized the impact I could have on a stranger’s life until I became a nurse.” That impact is something she’s proud of—not only professionally, but also personally. It’s something that her children can see and take pride in as well, and use as an example in their own lives as they grow up. It’s proof positive that every person can make a change and have a lasting effect on the world, and that’s one of the things that makes Melerine passionate about her work. “A former patient that I took care of after her C-section saw me in the grocery store one day, and said, ‘I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated you and the care you took of my baby and me in the hospital. I was a scared new mom; and if it wasn’t for your constant help and reassurance, I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done. You were my hero for those three days, and I

will never forget you,’” she recalls, citing one of the most rewarding parts of her career. “Nurses need to have empathy to care for our patients, and I hope that ability to empathize makes me a better mother.” Above all, being the best possible mother is Melerine’s ultimate goal—but she knows that part of that means recognizing her faults. “When my children are older, I want them to remember an imperfect mom—a real mom, one that made mistakes, because we all do—but also one who loved them unconditionally and fiercely. I want them to know that I will always be their biggest cheerleader, no matter what, and that they are the greatest things that have ever happened to me.” From the moment they wake up in the morning to the last kisses goodnight after their evening chats and prayers before bedtime, Melerine invests in her children, working to be an example of love and compassion and showing them that mothers really do make a difference.

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW STORY BY KAYLA BERTUCCI

If you have never heard the name Ronnie Kole, then you are truly missing out on one of the greatest and most decorated local pianists there ever was. Do not take our word for it, but let his many accolades speak for themselves. From performing for six presidents, to playing for Pope John Paul II, to traveling the globe, this renowned artist sure did leave his mark on the world. Ronnie Kole died on August 27th, 2020 at the age of 89. His son, Ronnie Kole Jr., says age did not matter when it came to his father’s spirited personality. He says his dad still had the type of energy and fervor for life that kept him tickling the ivories up until the very end. “My father was a constant entertainer; he was on all the time,” Ronnie Kole Jr. explains. The words about his father’s legacy came out of his mouth effortlessly. It all started back when his dad was a young teenager. Ronnie Kole was living in Chicago and was diagnosed with a heart condition that limited his physical activity. Unlike other young men his age, going outside and playing baseball was not an option when it came to extracurricular activities. Luckily for Kole, his aunt had a piano and he began to learn to let his creativity soar in ways he never dreamed. “He would play in old Chicago speakeasies,” Ronnie Kole Jr. explains, “but the piano keys would face the audience, which meant his back faced the audience as well. This way, no one could tell how young he was playing inside of these Chicago clubs.”

KOLE

For years Ronnie Kole would showcase his talents on the road, spending much time away from home and family. Then, in the 1960’s he made his way down to New Orleans. There he was discovered by Alois Maxwell Hirt or “Al” Hirt, a famous trumpeter and bandleader. The rest is history. Kole’s performances and involvement in the community left an unforgettable mark. From his annual fundraiser at his home in Slidell, “Jazz on the Bayou,” that raised over two million dollars over the years for multiple charities, to being a founding member of the French Quarter Festival, to his many years headlining Jazz Festival; and even serving as the chairman of the Sugar Bowl and as the chairman of the Louisiana Tourist Commission, Kole was much more than a musician. “He was a person who didn’t know how to say no,” says Ronnie Kole Jr., “He would help anyone, anytime, anywhere. He was that kind of person.” OCTOBER 2020

When asked what Kole’s favorite memory was, there was no question that his favorite performance was at Carnegie Hall. The runner up, though, was a performance played right here in south Louisiana. “He told me Carnegie Hall was what he was most proud of, but the greatest performance was for Pope John Paul II when he did mass in New Orleans. His dream was to play Amazing Grace with an orchestra and big choir, and that’s exactly what he got to do during the outdoor mass.” Amazing Grace holds a special place in Ronnie Kole Jr.’s heart, as it is his favorite song that his dad played. “He actually made me a CD with five or six different performances of Amazing Grace that he did at different locations, some with bands, orchestras, and choirs, some without.” “What was so unique about my father is that he would ask the audience during his shows what they wanted to hear. Then, with his left hand he would play his usual songs throughout the performance, but with his right hand he would play all of the requested tunes. Never in my life had I ever seen anyone do anything like that. Just, two halves of his brain working independently… it was really something to see.” In 2019, Ronnie Kole and his wife were honored in Slidell when the Heritage Park Amphitheater Stage was named, “The Ronnie and Gardner Kole Stage.” Beloved by so many, his memory will live on forever. “He was a good honest man, and I’m going to miss him, miss being able to spend time with him, talk to him. I’m glad we had the last several months to spend a lot more time with each other, but I’ve got an emptiness in my heart even though I know he’s in a better place,” says Ronnie Kole Jr. “No doubt he’s up there right now, playing Amazing Grace among the angels.”

alking the streets of New Orleans, it’s impossible not to be struck by the colorful culture that is everywhere: the

gas-lit streets downtown, the grandeur and intricate details of its historic buildings, the people that have kept its traditions alive for centuries. While the city has kept its heart and overcome many times of adversity, heartache, and trial, it still faces much struggle when it comes to a community in need. Fortunately for those who desperately seek help and hope, New Orleans Mission is there without judgment to lend a helping hand. Since opening in 1989 under the direction of the Gospel Rescue Missions, New Orleans Mission has made it their objective to effect a change in the city as well as its surrounding communities, and they’ve done a remarkable job in doing just that. “The New Orleans Mission is about changing lives,” explains Development Director Brandi Barocco. “We provide food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual guidance to the region’s homeless, hurting, and hungry. Our programs and services are designed to rescue people from homelessness, strengthen the recovery efforts of the people seeking our support, and ultimately foster a successful re-engagement into society as healthy, disciplined, and productive individuals who have renewed passion to lead a sustainable, purpose driven life.”

it would be impossible without the funding they receive through individual donations, grants, fundraising events, and the generous support of local area businesses and churches. While their mission is indeed a noble one, they often face a challenge in maintaining their ability to serve. “Our biggest challenge is the need we see and the amount of financial resources we have to meet the need. There is always room to grow financially as the needs around us continue to arise,” Barocco observes. Naturally, there is no cap in the desire to help those in need, and New Orleans Mission has high hopes of being able to increase their reach in more ways and offer their assistance to even greater numbers. “As we move into the future, we are looking to expand in our ability to help others transition back into the community successfully,” says Barocco. “We have a unique opportunity that could potentially open up in the near future that would dramatically affect how many people we have the capacity to house. However, are still working through the details of that project.”

Flu Shots Essential to Reducing Impact of Respiratory Illnesses During COVID-19 HAMMOND, LA - As influenza season approaches in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the flu vaccine is expected to play an essential role in protecting your health and reducing the impact of respiratory illnesses within the community and strain on the nation’s health care system, according to North Oaks Infectious Disease Physician Stacy Newman, MD.

“It is with great enthusiasm that I accept this promotion,” Riney states. “I look forward to continuing to advocate for our patients, staff and the future of North Oaks Health System as chief nursing officer.”

Our Lady of The Angels Installs Innovative CT System For Faster, Safer Patient Exams

“Southeast Louisiana’s flu season usually peaks between October and March, and getting vaccinated every year remains the single best way to protect against the flu,” Newman explains. “Due to COVID-19, we are encouraging everyone, six months of age and older, to get vaccinated against the flu. Acquiring either COVID-19 or influenza could negatively impact your overall respiratory health. The combination of both infections in a short timespan would significantly impact your ability to fully recover. Why take the risk?” No appointments are necessary to receive flu shots at North Oaks Walk-In Clinics in Hammond and Walker and North Oaks Primary Care & After Hours Clinic in Ponchatoula. Flu shots are offered for adults and children, age 6 months and older, including a specific vaccine for those 65 and older. Select North Oaks primary and specialty clinics in Hammond, Livingston and Independence also are providing both types of flu shots. Audubon is working aggressively on the design of the new downtown experience. Capital funding has been secured to complete a number of projects including the move of the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium to the Aquarium campus. This funding cannot be used to help close the gap in Audubon's current operations budget or to support operations.

Audubon Nature Institute Announces Plan for Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium NEW ORLEANS, LA - Audubon Nature Institute is taking the opportunity to improve current practices and examine strategies for long-term viability as it navigates the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the first steps will be moving Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium from the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas on the river, building a combined experience that reenvisions the guest experience and educational programming. Work will begin as soon as November and the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will not reopen in its current location.

The project is expected to include approximately 17,000 square feet of new space constructed inside the existing walls of the Aquarium and approximately 47,000 square feet of renovated space. Work will include permanently decommissioning the Entergy Giant Screen Theater, allowing space for a 5,000-square-foot multi-use events space on the first floor. A new shared lobby will modify and improve the existing theater lobby, providing access to the second floor. Moving the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium to the Aquarium campus will also create a faster and more convenient entry flow for guests and remove travel time between the facilities. The new exhibit space will be a combination of relocated exhibitry from the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and new custom-fabricated exhibitry. The feature exhibit will be a glassenclosed Butterfly Pavilion on the second floor. "While we are saddened by the reality of temporary closure, the move of the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will present cost-savings and fresh new experiences throughout the downtown campus for our community," said Forman. "Audubon's revitalized downtown campus will give us the opportunity to feature our wildlife conservation story and our commitment to positively impact the natural world." OCTOBER 2020
