IMPACT & GIVE BACK one’s self-confidence,” Stewart says. “That’s why our treatments are as unique as the people we serve, and all services are performed by an oncology-trained aesthetician and customized to each client. Our spa coordinator and our aesthetician both possess a deep compassion for what they do and form profound connections with their clients.” In fact, Annex coordinator Beth Adams has more than 15 years of experience in the medical field and cared for patients in an oncology unit when she lived in Nebraska. When her own son was diagnosed with brain cancer, she became even more passionate about patient care. She went on to train at Oncology Spa Solutions, an elite oncology training program, to increase her knowledge of cancer patient care. Likewise, Mary Napoli, who serves as the Annex’s aesthetician, holds 20 years of experience as a licensed aesthetician and attended Oncology Spa Solutions as a way to better her understanding of safely performing certain services on oncology patients.

Dear Mary,

Skin Deep BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

A

s a board-certified dermatologist for more than 20 years, Dr. Martha Stewart knows that skincare is crucial to looking good and feeling good—but it’s also important to your health. With a practice that covers everything from noninvasive anti-aging treatments and cosmetic dermatology to medical dermatological solutions, she is passionate about giving her patients the best care possible—especially those dealing with cancer or other difficult, stressful times in their lives.

For that reason, she created a special part of her practice called the Annex. “It was a vision I’d had for years, to have a place outside of the medical setting of my office where patients who were going through a difficult time could just go and sit in a relaxing space, where they could receive some pampering and a little TLC,” she explains. “I was greatly inspired by patients who were dealing with cancer, patients who had lost a loved one, and caregivers who came in exhausted from everything they were dealing with. As a dermatologist, I often see the skin manifestations of patients undergoing cancer treatment—radiation dermatitis, hair loss, and rashes caused by chemotherapy—along with skin conditions that are often associated with stress, including shingles and flare-ups of certain skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema. My staff and I not only treat the dermatological issues of these patients, but also strive to show compassion and understanding during such a challenging time.” Since opening the Annex in 2018, a great deal of focus has been given to cancer patients and helping them feel more confident in themselves. “Cancer impacts every aspect of a person’s health and well-being and can have dramatic effects on 16

Your kindness makes a difference. May you always keep shining your light. With sincere gratitude, Rhonda

TEAM UP for

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Clearly, Stewart wanted the best of the best when she created the Annex. As successful as she’s been in her practice, the Annex is a way to give back to the community. A letter is sent out to oncologists explaining the program; and every week, a service is donated to an oncology patient who has been recognized by their physician as someone who would benefit from one of their services. The patient is then notified by their physician that they have been nominated; and if they choose to participate, they are scheduled at the Annex. “These patients are not charged anything—it’s totally complimentary,” she explains. “Also, if my associate or I have a cancer patient we are seeing in the clinic who we think would benefit from a service, we just tell our Annex coordinator and send them over to the Annex to get a complimentary service and some pampering. We also have a pay it forward program for people to donate a service to someone going through cancer. Lastly, for those oncology patients who want to come in on their own, we do have a reduced price for those oncology services.” How ever they find themselves there, patients leave feeling energized and hopeful—not to mention cared for and pampered. They feel a little part of themselves restored, and that’s exactly what Stewart envisioned when she created the Annex. Other local non-profit organizations supported by Dr. Stewart’s practice include Habitat for Humanity, The Samaritan Center, James Storehouse, Northshore Food Bank, Hannah’s Klozet, You Night We Lift You Up Fund, STARC, COAST, and the Northshore Humane Society.

CALL DR. JACK SAUX ON HIS CELL, AND YOU’LL QUICKLY REALIZE THAT HE’S NOT YOUR TYPICAL ONCOLOGIST. IN FACT, HE’S NOT YOUR TYPICAL DOCTOR.

THE PIRATE

ONCOLOGIST By Liesel Schmidt

A

friendly-looking man with kind eyes; long, greying hair pulled back into a ponytail at the nape of his neck; and a beard, Saux doesn’t quite fit expectation, nor would he be type-cast as a medical professional. That said, all of it works in his favor, making him someone his patients not only trust—but also absolutely love.

As someone who was interested in becoming a doctor since he was a child, Saux is following a lifelong passion. Likewise, oncology was a seed planted in him at an early age. “My next-door neighbor when I was growing up in Metairie was an oncologist. My best friend in the neighborhood developed childhood leukemia, and I attended treatments with him at Saint Jude Hospital in Memphis on several occasions,” Saux explains. “My grandmother also had cancer and lived with us during the latter part of her life.” Following the path that seemed natural to him, Saux got his degree in biology followed by graduate school studies in marine biology, during which time he found that he was fascinated by the way toxins affected biologic systems—particularly marine life. “The molecular processes of how these toxins work is similar to the way that chemotherapy works to kill cancer cells,” Saux says. He went on to LSU Medical School in New Orleans, receiving a medical doctorate in 1991 before completing his residency in internal medicine through LSU at Earl K. Long Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He then began practicing primary care in Assumption Parish, working in many emergency rooms and providing house calls to patients all over South Louisiana. After a few years, he decided to continue his studies and completed his fellowship in medical oncology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans in 1998. After, that he began practice in Saint Tammany Parish as a medical oncologist and hematologist, partnering with other oncologists to form Northshore Oncology Associates in affiliation with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

24

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

All those years invested, and Saux still approaches his work with the fiery passion of a resident. “The interaction with patients is priceless— sometimes the littlest thing you do helps someone so much, and you don’t even realize it,” he says. “Occasionally, you see amazing responses to treatment. The development of new drugs and how they work is fascinating, and the science associated with the treatment of cancer continues to capture my interest.” Still, there are so many challenges to his care. “Keeping up with the fast pace of research and providing cutting edge care to my patients in a community setting is one of the biggest challenges as well as one of the most satisfying accomplishments of my medical practice,” he says. “COVID-19 has been the other greatest challenge since I have started practicing medicine and has dramatically delayed cancer screenings, causing a spike in cancer diagnoses at this time in our area.” As serious as his work is, Saux does bring some levity to the practice. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see him dressed up like a pirate— something that has earned him the nickname “pirate oncologist.” “The pirate parties started after dressing up for Halloween in the office, and then my 50th birthday party was a pirate party after that my friends Steve and Laura Ahrons—owners of the Columbia Street Taproom and Seiler Bar—and I came up with the idea to turn it into a fundraiser,” says Saux. “We raised money for a few different nonprofits and made it an annual tradition until two years ago due to COVID. We hope to resume pirating in 2022,” says Saux, who has also come to work dressed as a pink fairy, a butterfly, a moth, a dragonfly, a satyr, a clown, Cupid, a gentleman turkey… “I literally have hundreds of costumes,” he says with a laugh. The response he gets from patients is, of course, what drives him. “Ninety-nine percent of the time, I get a positive response,” he says. “All I’m looking for is a smile—something to distract them from what is a really a dark, scary, and difficult situation. Then we get down to business in treating their cancer.” Saux is also deeply involved in the community through fundraising events, street parties, concerts, and other activities around town. “Because I’ve been here a while, and I am outgoing and gregarious as well as somewhat of a character, I am nearly a local celebrity,” he admits. “It’s quite humbling to have people approach you and tell you how much they appreciate your efforts and how you helped them or someone they know.”

Social NorthShore you do an amazing job! I never used to advertise a lot but I love what you do and all the good causes you showcase. Keep it up!” - MARTHA E. STEWART, M.D.

THEDream HOUSE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

The word “masterpiece” comes to mind when looking at the house that stands at 706 East Charles Street in Hammond, bridging the gap from the past to the present with grace and beauty that commands attention. Built around 1906 by Eli Preston, the “Preston House” is a massive home that bears the best of both the Victorian and Craftsman eras, with decorative architectural details that seem to marry the two styles seamlessly. OCTOBER 2021

A

lumber magnate, Preston naturally built the home using only handpicked lumber from the finest virgin cypress trees in the Lake Pontchartrain and Maurepas swamps, including interior and exterior millwork. The result was something that has withstood the test of time and aged gracefully over more than 100 years, becoming part of the historic district of Hammond. Previously, the home was owned by the mayor and his wife, until it was purchased in April 2021 by James and Lacy Liipfert.

With numerous archways, thick columns, and cantilevered roofing supported by artistic corbels extending over a porch area that seems quintessentially Southern, the home is everything gracious about the deep South made manifest in a building. Enclosed by a white picket fence that perfectly replicates the original, the property is a sprawling expanse of green situated at the corner of South Chestnut and East Charles, with mature trees including live oaks, magnolias and cedar trees, as well as rose gardens and fruit trees that add to the feeling of history that seems to envelop the home like an invisible shroud. There’s little wonder, then, that the home has been featured in a number of magazines, books, and even a movie. “The property is well-known for the 500-year-old oak that the founder of Hammond, Peter Hammond, used to hitch his horses to back in 1818,” says Lacy, a native of Loranger and former SLU cheerleader who has been in the hair and makeup industry for the past 12 years in addition to interior design.

It’s transfixing, from the moment one walks up the stairs to the porch and through the original cypress double doors, each with beveled glass on the top half that afford views in three different directions. Walking straight ahead, you’ll find a long, open hallway lined with large chandeliers and archways that mimic the exterior. To the right, a large parlor with a marble fireplace and a wall of massive floor-to-ceiling French doors that lead out to the porch. Flowing from room to room and bringing warmth and cohesion to the spaces are beautifully stained heart pine floors.

The master suite is, of course, a sanctuary space for Lacy and her husband James, a former football player who transitioned into the NFL as an intern before becoming a scout and is now Director of Player Personnel as well as the Director of the College Scouting Department for the Houston Texans. With busy careers and two small children, they saw Hammond—and the Preston House—as a way to put down roots. “Football takes us all over the map, so our life is far from normal; and Hammond was our way of grounding ourselves and giving our children a steady paced lifestyle,” says Lacy. “I love what the town does to us—we slow down here. We simplify here. We have always been so in love with Hammond: the people, the hospitality, the food, the nightlife, the community, and, of course, our friends and family. It will always be our safe haven. The history, charm, and character of this town has just fueled my love for old houses, so it just made sense to try and make the best of both worlds happen.”

Formerly an attic space, the master suite comprises a bedroom, bath, and utility area and features vaulted ceilings, beautiful hardwood cherry floors, California Closets, and even a coffee bar. “It kind of has a Swiss family Robinson treehouse-feel because it connects eye-level to the massive oak tree branches in the windows,” says Lacy.

Featuring four large glass windows and three doorways, the spacious kitchen is flooded with natural light and boasts high-end appliances and a massive island crowned with granite that matches the perimeter countertops. Heart pine flooring greatly contrasts the white cabinetry and walls, adding warmth and flowing into a cypress-paneled formal dining room joined to the kitchen by a butler’s pantry. James's office—or “man cave” as it is often called—is an out-building located just off the back door, the perfect place to keep his college and NFL memorabilia. “It's a beautiful space and contains cypress and heart pine along with the original working wood fireplace,” says Lacy. Next to the man cave is the original carriage house.

“I had my eye on this house for as long as I could remember—more than a decade!” Lacy recalls. “I used to get in my car, drive here, and park in front of this house just to sit and stare at it! I was captivated by it. It's the most unique house I've ever seen, and I've been dying to get my hands on it and learn every inch of it. I am grateful that I get to be one of the caretakers of such a beautiful masterpiece.”

Over stubborn cellulite?

There may be a new solution for you! Cellulite is a structural phenomenon that accumulates over time and resembles an orange peel, cottage cheese, or pockmarked appearance on the buttocks and thighs. While it may seem similar to excess fat, it shouldn’t be confused with fat. Cellulite develops in both women and men; however, it is far more common in women. Some women are predisposed to cellulite, and it can even develop in women who eat well and live an active lifestyle. Unfortunately, cellulite is notoriously difficult to self-treat. But there is hope with the advent of innovative technologies such as Qwo® injections.

15+ YEARS | BOARD CERTIFIED MEMBER OF ASPS & LSPS Dr. Cooper serves the entire Gulf Coast. She is board certified in plastic surgery, as well as a member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Louisiana Society of Plastic Surgeons. Results will vary with each individual based on their physiology and medical history.

With Michele M. Cooper, M.D., you’ll find a friendly, unhurried atmosphere in which to make educated decisions about the wide variety of cosmetic procedures offered. Then, should you decide to enhance your life, you’ll find a relaxing environment designed to make your experience a comfortable one.

Five years later, she’s in remission and has had full reconstructive surgery after a double mastectomy. A busy wife, mother, nurse, and co-owner of Livaudais Electrical and Construction, LLC, with her husband, she continues to have a positive outlook

But when she was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in 2017, she was faced with something that no amount of engineering could solve. Fortunately, treatment successfully put Meche in remission; and while she is still undergoing treatment for the next two years, she has been cancer-free for three and a half years. “I learned how important it is to research your options because medical technology advances daily,” says Meche, who loves

In fact, she’s continuously active with You Night and the group of supportive women she has met there. “I would highly encourage any newly diagnosed women with cancer to consider becoming involved,” she says. “Lifelong friendships develop through communication and bonding with women going through similar issues with a cancer diagnosis.” Married 23 years to a supportive husband, Livaudais learned to lean on him as well as her children and friends—but most of all, she learned to lean on God. “I encourage anyone facing challenging times to have faith, hope, and trust that God has a good plan for your life!” she says. Of course, she also advises women to be proactive in early detection of breast cancer by having routine mammograms or other tests as ordered by a physician.

Sometimes it’s hard, and you won’t be the same person when it’s all done, mentally or physically— but you will be stronger, and you’ll be able to handle what comes your way.” Active in You Night, Meche is thankful for the ways the group has strengthened her. “Though I had family and friends around, it was hard to discuss some things with them because not many of them had gone through cancer treatments,” she says. “With You Night, I had people I could talk with, who understood. It all helped us in a small way to redefine who we are, because sometimes our goals, interests, loves, and our lives get lost in our cancer battles.”

THYROID

THE ENGINE THAT DRIVES THE BODY The thyroid – the engine that drives the body – controls the speed of metabolism. Thyroid disorders can slow down or rev up metabolism by disrupting the production of thyroid hormones.

Tysha Martin was in a vicious cycle – she was depressed because she was fat and fat because she was depressed. At least that’s how she saw herself. Martin, 49, had had eight back surgeries and never been overweight. But, despite an exercise routine and diets, she gained more than 45 pounds in a seven month period. “I asked myself, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ I felt so defeated; I didn’t feel like myself,” she remembers. Her primary care doctor suggested something might be amiss with her thyroid. So she made an appointment with Dr. A. Mannan Khan at North Oaks Endocrinology to see if her thyroid could be causing her problems. Dr. Khan and his cohort, Dr. Corey Majors, help diagnose, manage and treat thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, goiter, Graves’ disease, thyroid cancer and nodules. During Martin’s first visit, Dr. Khan guided her through a maze of questions and concerns she had about the butterfly-shaped gland in the front of her neck. “I didn’t realize what the thyroid controlled,” she recalls. “Dr. Khan educated me and didn’t leave any stone unturned.”

The thyroid creates two thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). In addition to regulating metabolism, the thyroid can also affect the following functions: heart rate; body temperature; muscle strength; body weight; menstrual cycles; nervous systems; and cholesterol levels. After reviewing Martin’s medical history during a “lengthy conversation,” Dr. Khan diagnosed her with hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough hormones to keep the body running normally. About 4.6% of Americans age 12 years and above suffer from hypothyroidism. “The conversation was about me,” Martin shares. “My appointment wasn’t rushed, and he was very compassionate. It was very customized – like meeting with a tailor who was making a dress just for me.” Dr. Khan, himself a thyroid cancer survivor, explained to Martin that many are surprised when they are diagnosed with a thyroid condition. And, there are often thyroid disease symptoms that are overlooked and untreated. In addition to weight gain, Martin’s symptoms included fatigue and mood swings. She confesses that she often lacked the energy and interest in familiar and favorite activities, like taking road trips with her husband Harold in their Corvette. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Khan was able to regulate Martin’s medication and to assist with her nutritional needs – always encouraging her and providing positive reinforcement.

“Dr. Khan assured me that the way I was reacting was normal and told me to quit beating myself up for feeling the way I did,” she adds. She has since lost 25 pounds and has control over her emotions. She sees Dr. Khan every three months to manage the hypothyroidism and to stay on track with his support. “The collaboration between Mrs. Martin and myself is paying off – she has had an excellent outcome for her disease process,” Dr. Khan notes. “Through following up regularly with labs and office visits, it is now well controlled.” Martin credits Dr. Khan for the successful changes in her lifestyle. “Dr. Khan is not just a doctor. He’s a partner in my journey,” she concedes. “He’s given me the tools to keep going and to be empowered. I feel like myself again, and I am comforted knowing Dr. Khan will be there to help me navigate any changes on my journey.”

If you believe you may have a thyroid problem, Dr. Khan & Dr. Majors are accepting new patients and can see you soon. Call (985) 202-7661 or visit www.northoaks.org/thyroidcare.

Still, she relied on her faith in Christ and the love of her husband and two boys to get her through. January of 2012, she went into remission and will soon be celebrating ten years cancer-free. “It’s incredibly important to remember to breathe. Getting that diagnosis is life-changing, so having someone supportive with you, to walk by your side, is crucial,” she advises anyone going through cancer themselves. “It’s also important to realize that treatment may be hard, but it’s doable.” A member of You Night, Class of 2015, Martinez has been active with the group for six years, and what it’s given her has been invaluable. “It helped me realize that cancer is not a bad word or contagious disease, and saying that you had it doesn’t mean you’re trying to get attention,” she says. “It also helped remind me that other women before me have gotten through it, and that I can, too.”

s an entrepreneur, Adrienne Brink has to possess the ability to multitask, to market herself and her brand, and to meet deadlines. As the owner of Uncommon Camellia, she has to use those skills as well as her ability to organize, coordinate, design, resolve problems, find solutions to unforeseen issues, and soothe frayed nerves—all so that her clients’ dream weddings come off without a hitch. And as a mother, she has to utilize all those skills and more.

Married to her high school sweetheart since 2009, Brink and her husband have four children aged eight all the way down to two months. While so many little ones pulling at her attention could have deterred her from wanting to work—much less run her own company—she loves all of it. “I opened my business because I wanted an opportunity to find joy and meaning in the workforce and the home at the same time,” explains Brink, 36. “I have lots of flexibility in when and where I work. Our infant, Hank, will be home with me for a while, so I’m currently a naptime warrior and often working while he’s asleep on my lap. I also lean heavily on my husband to help with raising our children. We have a true partnership that has made it possible for me to enjoy my role as a professional as much as my role as a mother.”

For that reason, she shows them that work isn’t a shackle—it’s a privilege and something that can be gratifying. “I try very hard to always talk about my work as something I enjoy,” she says. “I have hard days like anyone, but I genuinely love what I do. I try to avoid saying ‘I have to work,’ even if I'm missing something with them. I say, ‘I get to work, but can’t wait to hear about what you did while I was gone.’ I hope they see that and will choose careers they enjoy. I want them to build a business or career that is fulfilling.” There have, of course, been some lessons she’s had to learn in her working life. “Before opening my business, I worked as a mental health counselor,” she explains. “In my training and work in that field, I learned so much about prioritizing emotional wellness. I've had some pretty important lessons on keeping clear boundaries around my time, privacy, and my income.” 64

She’s also learned a few important lessons from her children. “I learn something from them every day,” Brink says. “Right now, I’m fascinated by their ability to adapt and be joyful even when things aren’t as they expected. They teach me to find joy in whatever is in front of us right now. Sometimes that means a frog in my lap, gymnastics tricks on my sofa, or most recently a beautiful design cut into my bedsheets!” As a mother, Brink has been infinitely proud of her children and their milestones. As a business owner, she’s had a few moments of pride, as well. “I’m proud that other women have found a flexible and positive working environment at Uncommon Camellia. Seven of our team members welcomed or will welcome new babies this year,” she says with a smile. “And we’ve been able to support and step in for those team members so they can take this special time with their families. There are seasons when finding joy and meaning at home requires more time, and seasons when it requires less. I am proud that we take care of each other, and I'm proud of how that spills over to our clients, as well.” While her children are still young, Brink treasures the times that she gets to be silly with them, to imagine with them, and to mold them. “On Three Kings Day, we stargaze together. On Valentine’s Day, they dress up for a ‘Royal Dinner.’ My husband and I serve them a fourcourse meal in our dining room; and we take out the fancy dinnerware, serve them sparkling wine, play Italian music, and only call them by ‘sir’ and ‘ma'am,’” she explains with a laugh. “Daily, we say grace before meals, prayers before school and bed, and tell them how much we love them over and over to the point that they get annoyed!” When they are older, Brink hopes that they remember her faith and reliance on God. “I also want them to remember spending quality time together, playing and working,” she says.

retired teacher, Heidi Rhea’s life has been about kids for a very long time— both at work and at home, with three grown children of her own and 11 grandchildren. Then, in 2011, it became about surviving. Diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma— also known as bile duct cancer—as well as Lynch Syndrome, a genetic factor which predisposes her to cancer at much higher risk, Rhea’s case was found early enough that the rare, aggressive form of cancer was treatable. Now, she is celebrating ten years NED (No

Evidence of Disease). “I didn’t always stay strong through all of it,” she admits. “It is really hard when you hear the word cancer. But reading all the posts of prayers, love, and support the day before my surgery gave me the strength to think positive.” Because of her own experience, Rhea established a 501(c) 3 nonprofit charity called A Rhea of Hope to raise funds and awareness for Cholangiocarcinoma. She also raises awareness for Lynch Syndrome. A lover of travel, crafts, and reading, she stays extremely busy with her organization as well as her hobbies—but she’s also active with You Night and has been for the past three years, since she was part of the program in 2019. Now, she helps as Boutique Liaison. “Being a part of You Night gave me more confidence in myself to do things I didn’t think I could do, like walk the runway,” she says. “It also gave me a wonderful sisterhood of new friends who had something in common with me, and we could offer support and love to each other.”

Mixon, whose full-time job is working as the office manager for Amite Pump & Well. “He gave me peace.” Now two years cancer-free, she offers this advice to anyone facing cancer themselves: “Don’t try to do this on your own. Give everything to God. He is the only one who can carry you through, so pray often and trust in Him.” A member of the 2020 St. Tammany class of You Night as well as a 2021 volunteer, Mixon is effusive about the value of such support. “You Night got me out of my comfort zone and made me realize that I still have so much to offer, in spite of how I feel and how my body has been changed,” says Mixon, who is also involved with support group Leah’s Girls. “You Night showed me that I’m not alone. I can talk to any of these wonderful ladies about anything, and they get it because they’ve been there.”

Breast Cancer Patients Can Find Hope, Support From Many Places As a working mother of six children, Courtney Paolillo knew a thing or two about balancing a busy lifestyle. From dropping the kids off at school and running errands to managing her busy schedule as a real estate agent, Courtney’s days were constantly spent on the go.

I

t felt as though it all came to a grinding halt the moment she was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the age of 41, Courtney Paolillo was in the fight of her life, faced with the most dangerous and aggressive form of breast cancer. Only two weeks had passed since she had first noticed a lump in her breast.

“I could couldn’t believe how quickly my life had changed,” said Paolillo. “One minute I’m sitting in the carpool line and the next I’m at the doctor’s office being given the worst news of my life. From that day on, I experienced many ups and downs through the course of my cancer journey.” Having now completed 20 rounds of chemotherapy and undergone a double mastectomy, Paolillo’s heroic story is a familiar one for the team of oncologists at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Since 1971, the Cancer Center has been caring for patients, improving survivorship and lessening the burden of cancer for communities across Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi. Every October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives Mary Bird Perkins’ Prevention on the Go team the opportunity to shine a spotlight on this disease and emphasize the importance of screening and early detection. One in eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. In Louisiana, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women. Regular screenings are the number one way to prevent breast cancer deaths. cance says “Early detection is key when it comes to successfully treating breast cancer,” Genevieve F. Maronge, M.D., a Northshore-area oncologist who will soon join Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Covington. “Fortunately, after Courtney noticed a lump in her breast, she acted quickly to schedule an appointment for a screening. I encourage all women to get a clinical breast exam at least every three years, starting in their 20s, and get an annual exam and mammogram starting at 40.” Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center takes a comprehensive approach to cancer treatment, extending beyond the four walls of the Cancer Center. Whether fighting breast or any other cancer, it’s important to strengthen a patient’s body, mind and spirit while also supporting those who serve as their caregivers. For this reason, the Cancer Center in Covington is now offering an array of new support groups for people battling cancer on the Northshore. Through these groups, patients can share their stories with others facing similar challenges, learn new coping strategies and encou find encouragement as they navigate their cancer journeys. Beginning this month, the Breast Cancer Support Group, Facing Cancer Together Support Group, and Caregiver Support Group will all be meeting at the Cancer Center located at 1203 S. Tyler Street in Covington. Anyone impacted by cancer is welcome – these groups are not limited to Mary Bird Perkins patients. Those preferring to join virtually may participate via Zoom. “My husband, children, family and friends all rallied around me, but at the end of the day, they never experienced cancer firsthand,” said Paolillo. “I was fortunate to have someone to talk to who was a little further along in treatment. I found it really helpful and therapeutic to share my story with her and others who were going through the same challenges. I encourage anyone battling cancer to consider taking part in one of these support groups.”

This Winter

Prevent Flu and COVID-19

Even though our South Louisiana weather is so unpredictable, there’s one thing we can be sure of as we head toward the close of the year, winter is right around the corner. While winter brings such welcome activities as the holidays, gumbo dinners and smores around a crackling fire, it also harkens the arrival of flu season and in the last couple of years, that has meant facing the double threat of flu and COVID-19. Since both of these sicknesses are viruses, many of the same tactics are used to prevent both. So, to ensure you enjoy winter activities and holiday get togethers, here are some tips on preventing flu and COVID-19.

Take Your Shot at A Healthier Tomorrow Your first line of defense against both of these viruses is to get vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications is to get vaccinated each year. In addition, COVID-19 vaccines are effective at helping protect against severe disease and death, including such strains as the Delta variant. People who are moderately to severely immunocompromised are

recommended to get an additional dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. So, get both your flu shot and COVID vaccines this fall.

Take the Next Steps in Prevention Taking some small steps in prevention practices everyday can keep you from contracting both of these viruses. Keep your hands clean and wash them often with soap. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough since flu and COVID viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with the virus cough, sneeze or talk. Avoid close contact, especially with people you think may be sick and if you feel sick, if possible, stay home from work, school, and errands to help prevent spreading your illness to others. If you think you may have COVID, get tested. In addition, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, which are all areas that can easily be contaminated by germs. Also be sure to practice all-around good health habits like cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

BRIDE

EMILY + MITCHELL

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

Ask any Southern mama, and she’ll likely say that the best place to meet your future spouse is in church. Fortunately for Emily Beau and Mitchell Guedry, the advice held true. While it might have been a friend at their church doing the convincing rather than his mama, Mitchell is eternally grateful that he listened when he asked Emily out on a date in January of 2019.

fter dating for a year and a half, Mitchell knew that he wanted the next chapter of his life—and all the ones to follow— to have Emily in them. So he did what all men do when they realize that they’ve found the love of their lives: he came up with a totally unexpected way to pop the question. “Mitchell had just graduated from medical school and been matched for his residency in Orlando, Florida,” Emily recalls of the day that changed her life forever. “His parents threw him a going away party, and Mitchell gave this whole speech thanking everyone who had gotten him through medical school. At the end of his speech, he came over to where I was standing and got down on one knee. I had absolutely no idea that it was happening then. He really surprised me good!”

Twelve months later, on June 12, 2021, Emily walked down the aisle at First United Methodist Covington wearing an off-the-shoulder ivory fit and flare gown that made her look timeless and classically elegant. “I felt so beautiful, I wish I could wear it again!” says Emily, who works as a pediatric occupational therapist, while Mitchell is now an ER doctor.

“My dad played the air guitar in front of the band when they played ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen,” Emily says with a laugh. “Both of our families also went crazy when ‘Callin' Baton Rouge’ came on, because we have a lot of LSU fans.”

Surrounded by 350 of their closest friends and family, Emily and Mitchell exchanged vows and promised to love one another for eternity. After being pronounced married, the couple joined their guests for a reception at The Greystone in Mandeville. Feasting on an array of Louisiana food that included pepper jelly shrimp, shrimp and grits, boudin balls, mini crab cakes, fried oysters, corn and crab bisque, and pulled pork sliders, everyone was energized to hit the dance floor and have some spirited fun—some of which will forever circulate as epic. “My dad played the air guitar in front of the band when they played ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen,” Emily says with a laugh. “Both of our families also went crazy when ‘Callin' Baton Rouge’ came on, because we have a lot of LSU fans.” All danced out, the newlyweds cut into a fourtiered ivory wedding cake adorned with peach flowers as well as a king cake groom’s cake— something special for Mitchell, who has a sweet spot for king cake. After tossing the garter and the bouquet—caught by Emily’s younger sister—the wedding festivities wound down as they so often do in Louisiana: the happy couple was sent off with a second line. Sent on their way, the newly married Guedrys went on their honeymoon to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and traveled through Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, filling their days with whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and hiking.
