Sarah Hill
By Liesel SchmidtBorn and raised in Pearl River, Sarah Hill has deep ties to the Northshore. After college, she moved away to pursue her dream of working at Walt Disney World in Florida but later moved back, finishing her master’s degree at the University of New Orleans. Eventually, she joined the team at Visit the Northshore, where she now works as the marketing manager of the tourism and travel organization. Interested in investing more of herself in the community that she loves, Hill later became part of the Leadership Northshore Class of 2023.
Feeding back into the Northshore and making a difference for those who live and work there is a great motivator in Hill’s life. Raised by parents who have always encouraged her dreams, she dedicates herself to giving others that same opportunity to live the best life possible. To that end, she works closely with the Steel Mimosas, a local women’s organization whose mission is to make an impact in St. Tammany Parish through quarterly donations of $10,000 to a different non-profit organization. The group also volunteers at community events throughout the year.
“I feel that I cannot take credit for any significant contribution,” says Hill of the work she does to give back to the community. “I am never working alone, and the impact of these contributions are the work of many people coming together because we love our community and want it to prosper.”
Currently, Hill is also sits on the board for Kids In Development Slidell (K.i.D.S.), a non-profit organization that funds the purchase of car seats for families in need and makes sure that the families receive education through partnerships with the local police and fire departments about proper car seat installation.
As busy as work keeps her, Hill was inspired to take on a leadership role within the community by friends whose own involvement in community needs was an example she wanted to follow. “I have two friends, Donna Bach and Andy Frisard, who always find a way to help people, small businesses and non-profit organizations within the Northshore community,” she says. “They have so much passion and personality that it overflows and makes you want to be involved with whatever they are doing. If you’re friends with one or both, you are bound to start taking on more leadership roles and finding new ways to improve your community.
“As for wanting to be a leader in the community and the way I approach that leadership, my parents will always be my greatest role models,” she goes on. “They make a great team and have laid the groundwork for me becoming the leader I am today. They never shot down the things I wanted to get involved with and still don’t. They are my biggest cheerleaders. My supervisor, Katie Gausco, has also fallen into the role of mentor. Her advice and detailed explanations help me see the bigger picture, and she also never discourages me from getting involved with more projects. I love that, and knowing I have her support is very important to me.”
Challenging though balancing community leadership with personal and professional commitments may be, Hill manages reaching a place of balance though prioritization, organization and communication. “I’m not going to say it’s easy to keep everything in balance because it’s not,” she admits. “Colorcoordinated calendar categories help. I also do my best to communicate with those in my personal life and those in my professional life about the commitments I am making and the time commitments the activities require.”
Through her community efforts, Hill hopes to make some measure of lasting change and inspire others. “I hope that what I do will motivate others to get involved in their community and that the projects I am involved in continue to grow,” she says. “This is and always will be home, and I want to see this community thrive, long after I’m gone.”

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDTAs a little girl, Ashley Mortensen dreamed not of being a career woman, but of being a mom, being there for all of her kids’ firsts, and having time with them as they grew up. After seven years focused on a career in business and retail, she left the rat race to do just that: raise her kids.
“Being a stay-at-home mom allows me to play a significant role in shaping their lives, providing them with the love, care, and support they need to thrive emotionally, intellectually, and socially,” says Mortensen of her six-year-old son, Luke, and three yearold daughter, Kennedi. “I’m so grateful for the support from my husband and having the opportunity to be home with them.”
Naturally, shifting gears from an outside career has been an adjustment—but one that Mortensen feels is invaluable. “I’ve learned to slow down and appreciate the small things,” she says. “I’ve also learned to be present as much as possible, play and be silly with them. They are only little for a short while, so I’m soaking it all up while I can.”
As her children learn the example she shows them each day, Mortensen lives by this wisdom: “I always say, ‘Be the best version of yourself because an original is worth more than a copy.’ Also, prioritize doing what is right over what is easy, and treat others with kindness and respect. Behave the same when others are watching
“Be the best version of yourself because an original is worth more than a copy.”
as when no one is around. Life is all about striving to be the best version of yourself and making positive contributions to the world. When they’re older, I want them to always remember those principles and live them in their daily lives. It’s also important to me that they never forget their mommy’s unconditional love, that they always feel accepted and valued for who they are on the inside, and that they are motivated to follow their dreams.”
Mortensen family traditions include taking family vacations each year and eating meals together as a family, during which they all spend time talking about their days. “We also have bedtime routines, giving the kids some calm time to wind down from the busy day,” says Mortensen. “Each morning before they go to school, we do positive affirmations—for ourselves as well as for our behavior and attitudes towards others, including our friends and our teachers.”
Watching her children grow up, the 35-year-old mother of two has learned a great deal from her little ones. “I have learned patience, empathy, resilience, the importance of playfulness, and unconditional love,” she says. “Every child brings unique lessons and experiences that shape us. I thank God every day for choosing me to be their mom.”
At Dr. Todd S. Brasuell Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to treat each child as if they are our own, to deliver the highest quality dental care, to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and entertaining environment, and to emphasize pediatric dentistry at a young age that will last a lifetime!

TEACHER feature
Ms. Robin Perez
KINDERGARTEN TEACHER
FOLSOM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?
There are two teachers that come to mind that influenced me the most and are the reason for many of my continued educational choices; my junior high choral director, Micheal Townsend and my high school choral director, Angela Jones.
What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?
My biggest challenge is meeting all my students needs. It can be hard to be there for each student the way I would like.
What do you feel is the biggest reward?
My biggest reward is when my students succeed and master a concept, or even a life skill. The look on their face when they get it just makes my heart burst with excitement for them.
How do you make learning fun for your students?
I never grew up! I'm still a child at heart. Truth be told, I create a family atmosphere in my room. I sing, dress up, come up with jingles and motions to assist their learning.
If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?
Give your best in all you do and do it with kindness. Your best is always enough.
Meekel Stevens is the embodiment of strength in the face of a rare genetic disorder called Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS-VI), which occurs in about 1 of every 200,000 births. MPS-VI is a multifaceted disorder that prohibits the body from breaking down molecules, affecting many different bodily processes.
Dixie Stevens, Meekel’s mom, first realized something was wrong when Meekel was born with clubfoot. What initially appeared as a treatable condition turned into a series of medical complexities as Meekel continued to grow. Dixie brought baby Meekel to Children’s Hospital New Orleans to begin a treatment plan. At Children’s Hospital, Meekel’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Tony Gonzales discovered that she had narrowing in her spinal cord and diagnosed her with cervical spinal stenosis, a rare condition in infants, which prompted genetic testing to determine the cause.
The fateful call confirming MPS-VI marked a turning point for the Stevens family. The family embarked on a journey that would redefine their understanding of resilience with the support of
Meekel
Navigating life with a rare genetic disease: Meekel is a beacon of hope for those around her
the Children's Hospital genetics team. Meekel's journey with MPS-VI started with surgery to help correct the stenosis in her spine to give her vertebrae some breathing room. Then, she was given a central venous catheter so that she could receive infusions of the enzyme she was lacking. Surgical interventions and weekly infusions became a regular part of Meekel’s life. She has since had two more surgeries aimed to correct cervical spinal stenosis
Living with MPS-VI entails managing a spectrum of symptoms, including cloudy corneas, a heart murmur, ear infections, short stature and respiratory challenges. Meekel's regular visits to Children's Hospital involve consultations with specialists from multiple disciplines, including ENT, Orthopedics, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery. She maintains care with Children’s Hospital pediatric geneticist, Dr. Regina Zambrano, who monitors her weekly infusions. Despite these challenges, Meekel embraces life to the fullest, attending school and aspiring to become a chef when she grows up.
At 14 years old, Meekel is small but mighty at 38 pounds and comes up to Dixie’s hip in
height. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, familial love and the pursuit of a fulfilling life despite the challenges posed by rare diseases such as MPS-VI. As Meekel continues to inspire those around her, her narrative becomes a beacon of hope for others navigating rare genetic disorders.

THAN HAIR MORE
“Oh, Jo, how could you? Your one beauty.”
- Amy March, Little Women, Louisa May Alcott (1868)As women, hair is something that intrinsically ties into our self-perception as well as how we feel the world views us.
Is this a good hair day or a bad hair day?
Hair also speaks volumes culturally: Hassidic women must wear wigs in public over their natural hair after marrying; Islamic women must wear a ḥijāb to cover their hair for modesty; tribal African women braid their hair in certain patterns to denote which tribe they belong to.
Hair is more than just hair.
When Tiffani Calix began experiencing her own hair loss in 2018, the salon owner and hairdresser saw a glaring problem: not only was it weighing on her own selfconfidence; she also felt that it would affect her clients’ perception of her, as a professional stylist. Her solution to the continuing problem was alternative hair. “The hairdresser in me always tweaked it, whether it was to cut it, add highlights, thin it out— whatever,” she says.
Calix eventually began making her own wigs to wear, though fear of judgement and embarrassment kept her from telling anyone she was wearing them. When she finally made known that she was wearing wigs, the number of clients who came to her for their own needs led to a side hustle that later turned into a fulltime job making and selling wigs.
As Wigs by Tiffani gained traction, so did the number of requests that Calix received for children’s wigs. “At the time, I didn’t make wigs small enough to fit young children,” she explains. “But the more people asked, the more I turned away, the guiltier I felt. Kids losing their hair is tough—especially in the adolescent stage when they’re just making friends, trying to figure out who they are, not knowing how to navigate the world. I felt my business has been so blessed in such a short amount of time that I wanted to bless these children by making them wigs.”
So, she did, using funds from her business to make five wigs a month for free. As word spread, followers and clients started offering to donate money for more children’s wigs, eventually resulting in Calix’s creation of a GoFundMe account. She now self-funds ten wigs each month herself, and donations have enabled her to provide even more. To date, more than 300 wigs have been gifted to children experiencing illnessrelated hair loss.
“We have gotten so many videos and pictures from all over the globe of these, and they’re so excited,” says Calix of the responses she has seen. “Their reactions are indescribable. Lots of smiles, lots of happy tears and an instant confidence boost! I love that we’re

Yahya
Yahya’s fight for survival: An ongoing battle with a rare brain tumor
One month shy of Yahya’s first birthday, his parents noticed a concerning change—the size of his head suddenly looked abnormally large. They took him to his pediatrician, who referred him for a CT scan the following day at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
The results of the imaging were unimaginable - Yahya had a brain tumor known as juvenile
pilocytic astrocytoma, a cancer that develops from brain cells which form tissue that surrounds the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
A few days after Yahya was admitted to Children’s Hospital, Dr. O.A. Roberts performed what would be the first of multiple surgeries, draining the fluid that had swelled in Yahya’s brain and inserting a shunt to allow any further fluid build-up to drain. Dr. Roberts also removed as much of the tumor as possible, but he couldn’t remove all of it because of the proximity to critical brain areas.
The next step was to undergo chemotherapy to try to shrink the rest of the tumor and halt any further growth. Yahya was placed under the care of pediatric neurooncologists at Children’s Hospital, including Dr. Maria C. Velez. Then, one day at home, Yahya had a seizure. The next day, during an appointment in the hospital’s Hematology-Oncology Clinic, he had another— and he was immediately admitted.
Dr. Roberts performed another surgery to remove an intracranial bleed related to the seizures. It was a successful surgery, but
Yahya was far from healed. Due to the complex and critical nature of his rare brain tumor, he continued to face a series of additional health challenges. He developed severe sleep apnea and needed to get a tracheostomy tube to help him breathe.
Yahya has had to undergo extensive occupational, physical and speech therapy. His health improved for a while but took another turn when a cyst was discovered growing around the tumor. Dr. Roberts performed another surgery to drain the cyst, and Yahya had to have another tracheostomy put in to support his breathing.
Today, Yahya continues to receive regular monitoring and follow-up care. Every three months, he gets an MRI to monitor his tumor’s growth, and he continues to see his care team at Children’s Hospital.
Despite his ongoing health needs, Yahya is doing well. He enjoys spending time with his family, and he is back at school, making up for the two years he had to miss during chemotherapy treatment.

Peeking from behind an expanse of grey planking that serves to obscure the main floor and offer a sense of seclusion, privacy, and sanctuary, this New Orleans-style courtyard home in Covington was a dream come true for EROS owner Erin Schaumburg and her mother.
“It all started when I bought a home in Tchefuncte ten years ago, while I was pregnant with my fifth baby boy,” says Erin. “It’s a
beautiful, gated community, and I loved the family atmosphere and the friendliness of everyone who lived here. At the time, my mother was frequently staying with me because she lived in New Orleans. We would often go home hunting in the neighborhood, but almost everything was a renovation that required too much work. One day, we happened to come across this amazing home with an open floor plan. As soon as we walked in the doors, we knew…”
Boasting three sets of French doors that mimicked Schaumburg’s childhood home, the women knew that the change wouldn’t be too drastic—even after being in New Orleans for 50 years in the same home raising her children—because the floor plan of this home was so similar. “We both looked at each other and immediately knew that she would purchase this house,” says Erin.
And so began a passion project for Erin and her mother. “With me having just opened EROS in Madisonville, it was the perfect project,” says Erin, who learned her unique, creative design style from her mother. “Pretty much every time my mom comes into my store, she admires everything! It was a great opportunity for us to work together, creating a traditional New Orleans-style home with all the French antiques and my Bohemian flair. My mom has 29 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two on the way, so she wanted this home in Covington to be a place where everyone would come and gather, where we could all cook and hang out and create new memories. I knew my mom would be sad to leave our childhood home, so I urged her to not think that she was letting go of old memories but to focus on the fact that she was going to make new ones.”
Built in 2016, the home is 3,728 square feet, comprising five bedrooms and four baths—plenty of space for the large family that often visits. The gardens, however, seem to be the homeowner’s favorite part of the property. “The front courtyard when you enter the home is magnificent,” says Erin. “Mom’s flowers are always blooming yearround. She loves her garden, and her garden loves her back.”
After purchasing the home, shutters were added onto the back of the house, along with a large deck running the length of the house into the gardens. Inside, the formal dining room features the dining room table that Schaumburg remembers from her childhood. The mirror above the buffet and the additional dining room furniture are from an antique store on Royal Street.
The living room features a Belgian linen custom sofa named after Erin’s third son, Isaac, purchased from EROS, along with a one-of-a-kind rug. “Many of the pieces in her home she’s collected since we were kids,” says Schaumburg.
Throughout the spaces, a calm palette of whites maintains a sense of neutrality, seamlessly blending the antiques with the designer finishes of the kitchen, bathrooms, living spaces, and bedrooms. The passion and expertise show in each facet of design—all while making the home one that is comfortable, livable, and welcoming to the family that is filling it with memories.

2 tbsp diced red onions
2 tbsp red wine vinegar

A teenager’s resilient battle against cancer: Brady’s brave brain tumor fight
Meet Brady Duncan, a happy energetic 14-year-old sports enthusiast who's always had a passion for baseball, basketball and track. His life took an unexpected turn, throwing the kind of curveball no one ever expects, a cancer diagnosis.
Last spring, Brady began experiencing debilitating headaches. His energy was drained, and he was constantly fatigued, a far cry from the lively teenager he used to be.
The Duncans initially sought help from a pediatrician, and after evaluating and initially managing Brady, the pediatrician advised the Duncans to consult a pediatric neurologist.
While undergoing evaluation by neurology and ophthalmology, Brady’s symptoms persisted with new concerns. A CT scan revealed a blockage in his brain. Immediately, Brady was transported to the pediatric ICU at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
Dr. Jerome Volk, a pediatric neurosurgeon, placed a shunt in Brady’s brain to address the blockage and conducted a biopsy to understand the nature of the issue. It was at this point that Dr. Volk confirmed Brady’s diagnosis: a germinoma.
A central nervous system germinoma is a type of germ cell tumor that typically originates in the brain. Germ cells are cells that, during normal development, migrate to the gonads (ovaries in females or testes in males) and give rise to eggs or sperm. However, in the case of a CNSgerminoma, these germ cells may get trapped in the brain during fetal development and give rise to tumors.
Brady was referred to Dr. Maria C. Velez, a pediatric
neurooncologist, who oversaw Brady’s treatment. He underwent four rounds of chemotherapy as an inpatient, with each cycle posing its own set of challenges.
Brady received chemo every 21 days. But that changed accordingly because he was hospitalized for lung infections due to his weakened immune system following his treatments. Before he could resume chemotherapy, his oncology team evaluated his hemoglobin, platelets and his absolute neutrophil count, an estimate of the body’s ability to fight infections, especially bacterial infections.
Brady began radiation treatment, a daily routine for four straight weeks. With unwavering faith and support from his family and medical team, Brady completed his radiation on September 1, 2023. He rang the bell two times, symbolizing the end of his cancer treatment and the start of his recovery journey.
Today, Brady, a ninth-grade freshman, proudly stands as a symbol of determination and resilience. Despite lingering fatigue from his intensive treatments, he’s back in school, earning a spot on the honor roll, and gradually reclaiming the life he momentarily put on hold.

Direct FROM THE GROWERto You
The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.
Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.
Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.
Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

HOLLY + SETH
Holly Stewart and Seth Mabile’s first meeting in August of 2019 wasn’t so much serendipity as it was a set-up by Holly’s best friend Kaitlyn, who married Seth’s cousin and thought the two would make a cute pair. “She invited the two of us on her birthday trip to the beach, and we hit it off immediately. Since then, it’s been nothing but love and fun memories together!” says Holly.
Three years later, the fun turned into something much more when Seth proposed during their annual friend’s trip in July of 2022. “We had been discussing engagement plans, and because we had so many trips planned for the year, I never really suspected he would ask on that trip specifically,” Holly recalls.
But Seth had it all planned out…“On the last day of our trip, we had all collectively decided to get dressed up for a last night out together,” Holly goes on. “The girls wanted to take a group picture on the beach, and as we got closer, I saw Seth standing there. Immediate tears rolled down my face. Everything was so well thought out—he had ‘Trying,’ our favorite song by Jordan Davis, playing, and he’d set up a beautiful arch with decor and champagne. The best surprise of all was that he’d coordinated for both of our families to be there waiting to surprise us after I said YES! It was such a beautiful moment, one that I will never forget.”
Having said yes, Holly and Seth again had an incredible moment on September 16, 2023, when Holly walked down the aisle at The Greystone wearing a fitted gown with a mesh bodice and floral detailing to meet Seth at the altar. Surrounded by 250 of their nearest and dearest, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married before joining their guests for an onsite reception.
The couple wanted to keep their day within a specific palette and asked guests to wear their wedding colors of black and white with champagne gold accents. All that color-coordination made for fantastic photos at the handmade photobooth wall, which was built with the intent of post-wedding use in the couple’s home together.
Rather than a typical wedding cake, Holly and Seth opted for a Bundt cake. “We wanted something that we would enjoy eating together after the wedding, and we’re both suckers for a good white chocolate raspberry Bundt cake,” Holly notes.
Another a-typical touch: “Seth’s family has a tradition of dancing to ‘All Shook Up’ by Elvis,” says Holly. And finishing out the festivities on a high note, “Seth ended the night without a shirt!”
After being sent off by their guests, the newly married Mabiles honeymooned in Crete, Greece. Now back home in Ponchatoula, the couple have hopes of one day building their dream home in Holly’s hometown of Folsom. Regardless of where they live, they’re happy to have their life together and a future filled with love, support and fun times creating thousands of memories.

At 14-weeks pregnant, Falyn & Brian Zorn were told the unimaginable –she had lost all amniotic fluid. Doctors warned her of the grim possibilities –a miscarriage or delivering a stillborn baby. The weeks that followed were a blur of anxiety as they tried to think through the next steps with their baby boy.
At 36 weeks, Falyn was induced and baby Brayden defied expectations and entered the world with a fierce cry, determined to prove doctors wrong. With cysts plaguing his only kidney, their precious boy faced a daunting battle ahead. They knew he was going to have renal problems, but only time would tell what his journey held in store.
Brayden's journey led them to the NICU of Children's Hospital New Orleans, where their care team became their lifeline for the next four months. As Brayden grew, so did the challenges he faced. Tracheostomies, ventilators and surgeries became routine in his young life as he battled renal failure and respiratory complications. He went from stage two to stage five renal failure in a year and was also diagnosed with Pierre

Defying the odds : Four-year-old Brayden’s kidney journey
Robins Sequence meaning he has a small jaw and receding jawline since he was compacted in Falyn’s stomach with no amniotic fluid. By eight months old, Brayden became completely trach and ventilator dependent due to his underdeveloped esophagus and jaw.
In July 2022, Brayden’s family heard the news they had been longing for – a chance at a new lease on life through a kidney transplant. Because Brayden was trach and ventilator dependent, he was not eligible for a transplant as first. Removing the trach meant that doctors would have to reconstruct his undeveloped esophagus. Dr. Jessica Zaggory, pediatric surgeon, along with Brayden’s team of incredible pulmonologists and ear nose and throat specialists, performed an incredible reconstructive surgery.
With his new esophagus, and being successfully weened off the ventilator, Brayden was placed on the transplant list. Brayden finally received his lifesaving surgery last September, and the transplant was a success, marking a new chapter filled with possibilities.
As Brayden recovered from his transplant, and with each passing day, he grew stronger and healthier. Brayden is now four years old and thriving. Now, as Brayden embarks on his journey of recovery, his spirit shines brighter than ever. With each passing day, he defies the odds and embraces life with an unmatched enthusiasm.
