From the Editor As we reflect on the passing year, it’s astonishing how swiftly time has flown. The journey has been enriched by the incredible support of our community, for which we are profoundly grateful. As we eagerly anticipate the dawn of 2024, we stand ready for the new adventures and opportunities it holds! In this special December/January edition, we extend our coverage to highlight the Northshore’s premier VIP event—the Mutts to Models Charity Gala, proudly presented by Mercedes-Benz of Covington. This distinctive charity gala and runway show, a signature event by Scott’s Wish, marked its return in late fall, generously benefiting causes that resonate deeply with our community. Notably, this issue takes a moment to honor our veterans, recognizing their invaluable contributions to our society. Scott’s Wish, a 501c3 non-profit, is driven by an all-volunteer team dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of people and pets. The gala’s proceeds, nearly every dollar, go towards aiding the sick and homeless, both locally in St. Tammany Parish and beyond. Established in 2008 and named in memory of Scott Lala, the organization has been a beacon of kindness, assistance, hope, and joy. At Social Northshore, our gratitude knows no bounds. We appreciate each & every one of you for supporting us and allowing us to showcase the vibrant Northshore community. From capturing local events and spotlighting business leaders to championing cherished charities, our mission is to celebrate the essence of our community. Here’s to more shared experiences and impactful moments in 2024!

COMMUNITY LEADER
By Liesel Schmidt
“Against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” When Matthew Cole was sworn in as a Marine, two weeks after his graduation from Mandeville High School in June of 1999, he had all the makings of a career military man: he came from a long line of veterans on both sides of his family, and that legacy was one that made his call to duty run blood deep. As a Cub Scout, Cole had also witnessed firsthand the integrity and honor of his den leader, who was an active-duty Marine at the time and had served three tours in Vietnam. “His leadership, spirit, teaching methods, and the way he carried himself sparked my interest in the Marine Corps,” Cole explains. Four years of Marine Corps JROTC at Mandeville High sealed the deal, and Cole joined the delayed entry program in 1998, the summer before he was a senior. It was only a year later that he was shipped off to recruit training—and the years of service that molded him into the man he would become.
HONOR BOUND “Being a member of the most professional, proficient, fighting force is an experience that guides me and haunts me daily,” he says. “The life of a Marine is usually not very pleasant. In training, you’re ‘asked’ to do more with less; and in combat, you’re expected to succeed, no matter the challenges you face. The old recruiting slogan still holds true: ‘The Change is Forever.’ I do my best to conduct my life in proficient military manner and always be prepared.” Prepared. Equipped. Ready. As ready as he was to give his life for his nation, Cole could have never foreseen the sacrifice he was called to make in 2005. At the time, Cole, a corporal serving as the crew chief of an Amphibious Assault Vehicle commonly known as an "AMTRAK," was on his second combat tour in Iraq. When enemy insurgents fired mortars into his forward operating base, Cole was hit with shrapnel in the back and right lung, resulting in a spinal cord injury and collapsed lung. After rehabilitation, Cole returned home to Covington and was medically retired in 2006. “Returning to civilian life a paraplegic is a massive obstacle to overcome,” he says. “My MCJROTC instructor, Colonel Lehman McHenry, preached to us that life will throw you curve balls or knock you on your butt, so you’d better have plan B and C for five years out and ten years out and know that those plans need to be reevaluated every couple of years.

Thankfully, the Marine Corps teaches us to improvise, adapt and overcome. I was also blessed to have a wonderful mentor at the Tampa VA hospital, where I rehabbed. He was a quadriplegic who never let his disability get in the way. ‘You can’t go over the obstacle now—you have to figure out a way around it,’ he would preach to me.” For Cole, the “way around” his obstacle has been found through his involvement with veterans’ service organizations and veteranfocused non-profits that have allowed him to share his experiences with others. Over the past 17 years, Cole has worked with Support Our War Heroes Foundation, Wounded War Heroes of America, and various other organizations as well as serving as a veterans’ assistance counselor with the Louisiana Dept. of Veterans Affairs. “Our young men and women who return to civilian life with disabilities need an outlet to release built up anxiety, anger, and depression and regain their self-confidence,” he says. “As strong as veterans are, they are still human. They need activities with peers who have similar combat and life
experiences to let their guard down and express the emotions that would otherwise come out in a negative way. Seeing someone with the same or more severe disability competing in athletics, hunting, fishing, coaching, being involved in scouting and family activities can relight the spark and motivate that veteran to reengage in life and relationships. “In my work as a VA counselor, helping a veteran, surviving spouse, or eligible dependent gain access to his or her VA benefits is a rewarding experience, and I cherish every successful case,” he goes on. Cole is a founding member of The Marine Corps League, LCpl. Justin D. McLeese Detachment 1487, and worked with other Marines to bring a Marine Corps League Detachment to West St. Tammany. He is also a member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Gulf Coast Veterans, Inc.

BOARD CERTIFIED VETERINARY DENTIST & ORAL SURGEON What drives your passion for veterinary care? My patients, honestly. My patients teach me more than I’ll ever be able to give back to them. Each and every pet deserves a voice, an advocate, for them and that’s where I step in. It’s so rewarding to have an owner tell me how well their pet is doing after a procedure with me.
What Sets Your Approach Apart in Pet Healthcare? As a Board Certified Dentist, I take great pride in focusing in on giving pets the best oral health possible. Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery is a very unique niche. If you compare what I do to the human world… I’m a general dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, endodontist, periodontist, orthodontist and prosthodontist all wrapped into one!
What influenced your decision to pursue this profession? I knew I wanted to be a Veterinarian early on in my college career but the cool thing is I did not know I could be a Veterinary Dentist until I was in my third year of vet school. I shadowed a Boarded Veterinary Dentist during a clinical rotation and fell in love with the area of veterinary medicine. I asked that Veterinarian (who later became my resident mentor) “So I can do this (veterinary dentistry) every day?” And she said “Yes!”… that was it.. I was sold! I truly love what I do! The quote “if you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life” is exactly how I feel about my chosen career path!

BOARD CERTIFIED SMALL ANIMAL SURGEON What drives your passion for veterinary care? The impact of surgery on the lives of dogs and cats is so amazing. Giving them a new lease on life is truly gratifying.
What sets your approach apart in pet healthcare? I believe in a personal approach to each and every patient. First listening, and then educating the owners on their options. They should have time to consider surgical and non surgical options while feeling supported and heard.
Can you share a memorable success story from your practice? I had a patient, Kelce, that had a severely broken leg. She was found as a stray and funded by a rescue group. The injuries were too severe for repair and we had to amputate her limb. Within 2 days of surgery, she was up and around and wagging her tail. Without the hard work of our staff and the rescue group, she would not have been able to heal. She is now thriving, happy and pain free.
In what ways do you tailor your services to meet the unique needs of each pet? Getting to know the history of the pet as well as the owner’s concerns allows an individualized treatment plan. I educate the owners about their options. We discuss everything from the disease process, prognosis, risks, complications and costs. I want them to feel fully confident in their decisions.

DR. ASHLEY GEOGHEGAN
What sets your approach apart in pet healthcare?
While we are a full service veterinary hospital, we strive to treat as holistically as possible. We blend holistic and modern medicine to provide the best care for your pets. From treating complex medical problems to preventing new ones, we choose therapies specific to our patients’ unique needs.
Can you share a memorable success story from your practice? Just take a look at our patients from this morning. We supported an anxiety dog (Brutus) to be able to relax and sleep through the night. We enabled a paralyzed dog (Maci) to walk , we helped a painful, arthritic dog (Amos) to start running again, and our renal failure patient (JoJo) now has normal renal values. These success stories are routine at our hospital. The best part is that these patients were fixed by herbs and acupuncture. VetNaturally is a testimony to the power of natural options like acupuncture and herbs.
What advice do you have for pet owners in ensuring lifelong health for their pets? If you are feeding dry dog food and getting annual vaccines without titer testing, let’s start there. Dogs need moisture in their diet. Under-vaccination can be equally as dangerous as over-vaccination. Unless you are titer testing, you don’t know which vaccines your dog needs. I built my hospital to help with all stages of a pet’s life. In the beginning we worry about social adjustment of puppies and correct nutrition and proper vaccine schedules. We start rehabilitation programs early so puppies move correctly and well their entire lives. As a pet ages, they can have deficiencies. We treat these deficiencies naturally with acupuncture and herbs. And as they move into their geriatric years, their organs are doing great, their movement is wonderful and they have a strong immune system. This is why we have thriving 16 and 17 year old dogs in our practice.

The Dog Guy
JOHNMICHAEL MYHAL “THE #1 REASON OUR CLIENTS SAY THEY CHOSE PETCARE HIDDEN FENCE IS REPUTATION” LOCAL, RELIABLE & FANATICAL ABOUT PET SAFETY Like many dog lovers, we are deeply invested emotionally in our “four-legged kids.” My dogs are not “like” family, they ARE family. That passion is extended into caring for our clients dogs like they were our own, and unlike out of-town competitors, our clients are our NEIGHBORS. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is hard enough, but losing one because they dug under or climbed over a fence, ran through an open gate or door, or bolted into traffic is a grief that no one should have to live with.
Can you share some key challenges you've faced in establishing and growing your business, particularly in a market where pet owners have various options for containment systems? We have largely overcome the stigma and belief that electronic containment systems are just “shock fences” thanks to our proprietary GentleStart™ Training protocol. It’s a process based on behavioral science and psychology, not shock. It amazes people. Our current challenge is educating people about low-cost DIY options like wireless and GPS systems available online. They are not necessarily proven, reliable or gentle enough to be used.
As a business owner, what role do community engagement and local partnerships play in building trust and establishing a positive reputation for PetCare Hidden Fence within the pet-owning community? We are huge advocates for rescue and adoption efforts and do all we can to support local shelters and those amazing individuals who dedicate themselves to animal welfare. What we do has had a dramatic impact on shelter recidivism. When a dog escapes over and over, that’s a very hard dog to adopt out. We offer an immediate solution for families, and I’m proud to say that over the past 25 years, we’ve helped close to 4,000 dogs grow old at home. It’s not just a job or a business - it’s a cause.

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
A
s humans, we are more or less the maters of our own destiny— in so much that we are given free will and choices throughout or lives that guide our circumstances. Animals, however, are not given that opportunity. In the wild, they depend on instinct and survival skills. But in domestic life, they are shaped into creatures whose needs are cared for by their humans—and those humans don’t always treat them with love.
The many cases of animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment are why organizations like St. Tammany Parish Animal Services are so incredibly important to the communities they serve, giving animals a place of safety—and, more importantly, connecting them with people who will love them in a way that they deserve. Created in 2008 by ordinance of the people of St. Tammany Parish through a dedicated ad-valorem property tax millage, STPAS had a mission to provide a public, open admission, animal shelter for the animals of St. Tammany Parish.
“At the time, there was a large number of stray dogs that the existing shelters could not confine adequately or properly with their current infrastructure,” says Robert Bremer, who took over the role of director in 2021. “With large populations of stray dogs comes an increased risk for dogs not inoculated from the rabies virus, which is a public health concern. There is also the danger of loose animals hurting people, other pets, causing vehicle accidents, etc. Ending animal suffering and nuisances by giving them a place to go and recuperate is a sound idea and makes for a safer and more compassionate community.” As an open admission public animal shelter, STPAS provides a safe, clean place for the almost 5,000 homeless, unwanted, or cruelty-confiscated animals that come through the shelter’s doors in St. Tammany on an annual basis. control and shelter, STPAS provides such services as an adoption program and regularly holds specials to adopt their fully vaccinated, friendly, fixed animals to the community in St. Tammany. They also offer guidance on proper animal ownership, enforce animal related local ordinances, operate a community cat program, and provide other services crucial to proper animal care and control. “Our community has grown considerably over the past few decades, and with more people come more animals,” Bremer says. “I believe the term exponential growth would fit well to describe the change in our community, and the problems related to pet overpopulation can only be solved through the dynamic application of both humane education and compassion.” Just as when it was founded, funding for the STPAS is derived from a dedicated property tax millage by the voters of St. Tammany. They also receive a great deal of financial support from their partners at Mardi Paws x Scott's Wish. “Because of the growth of the community and the resulting growth of the animal population, kennel space is an extreme challenge—as is staff time for socialization and enrichment, which is why we encourage volunteers to help us with these two needs,” says Bremer. “Walk a dog, play some fetch, cuddle up with a cat in the cottage—anything helps, and we welcome anyone who loves animals to volunteer with us.”

Over its past 15 years of operation, STPAS has certainly made an impact on the community: “We are extremely proud of the fact that we’ve been able to change our shelter around from a live release rate in the 40-percent range to 97 percent, with innovative and progressive programs that keep public safety in mind but also grow the humananimal bond.” Upcoming events include the ongoing National Adopt-A-Senior Pet month, with all of the senior animals’ adoption fees waived. The STPAS Pets and Vets program allows all verifiable veterans to adopt an animal with no adoption fees.

CAROLINE SCHNEIDER
Caroline Schneider is a Louisiana based abstract artist, located in Covington, LA. Her southern roots influence her art in both color and aesthetic, where you will find many shades of green along with vibrant pops of color. She favors the use of heavy texture in much of her work, allowing the art to “leap” off the canvas! Her other work includes watery abstracts in soft, soothing colors. While she holds many titles, as nearly all women do—wife, mother, artist, business owner... her true passion is to create art that sparks joy, evokes meaning and brings light and love into your space. Each work of art is a hand-made original. The majority of her work consists of custom commissions, but every quarter she releases a curated collection of original work, available for all to shop. 76

S U P E R DA D “Being a dad is like winning the lottery. The joy, love, smiles, laughter, and special moments are emotionally and mentally incredibly rewarding. It's not all roses, but the good far outweighs the bad.” Jeff Schumacher may be a single father, but he shoulders the responsibilities of that role with the dedication of a man who cherishes his children. A veterinarian with VetNaturally by Dr. G, Schumacher’s work is unique in that the practice provides integrative veterinary medicine, which is a combination of modern and holistic. Over his past 20+ years as a veterinarian, Schumacher has honed his surgical skills and become a specialist in acupuncture, which he finds to be extremely rewarding. Naturally, his work comes with a demanding schedule—which, on top of juggling his two children’s school and extra-curricular activities, makes for a busy life. His two passions of his children and his work with animals, however, make that busy life a

fulfilled one. “As a veterinarian, I have a love for animals; and this compassion has led to my children having four dogs and two cats in their lives,” Schumacher says. “My work centers on the care, love, and responsibility of ownership of animals, which is important because it develops my kids’ understanding of animal stewardship. They know what is right and good for the animals in our care, which then translates to how they treat all animals. That is also a lesson in how they are to treat their fellow humans, so it has been a great teaching moment for my son and daughter.” Schumacher’s ten-year-old son, Brandt, attends Mandeville Middle School as a fifth-grade student and is the goalie for Madisonville United Select Travel Soccer Club in addition to learning how to play the trombone. His seven-year-old daughter, Audrey, attends Magnolia Trace Elementary as a second-grade student. She, like her brother, plays soccer with Mandeville Soccer Club as a goalie. She loves animals and wants to be a veterinarian like her daddy. Their family of three has also welcomed two additional members: Schumacher’s significant other, Elissa, and her son, George, who live in the Washington, D.C., area and visit as often as possible.
Being a father, Schumacher understands the need for compassion and understanding—and those are characteristics that also serve him well as a veterinarian. “We treat the patient, as well as the owner,” he says. “It is imperative that we listen to the owner and understand their concerns for their animal. Pet parents come to us for advice, help, treatment, or therapy because they love and care about their companion. It’s our obligation to provide information to the owners while simultaneously taking all the measures and steps to provide the patient the best veterinary care.” Before becoming a veterinarian, Schumacher served ten years as a Ranger in the Army infantry. “That time was very influential in my life,” he observes. “However, my successful completion of veterinary school was an incredible achievement for me, as it was a manifestation of 14 years in the making. I decided in 1993 that I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I didn't complete that goal until 2007. It may have taken time, but I feel that seeing that goal through to completion makes me a better father because I can share with my kids that focus, determination, and perseverance does pay off. I never quit. I just took the long, winding road. If something is important to you, never, ever stop pushing forward to achieve the goal and reach the objective.” As his son and daughter grow into adulthood, he hopes that his love them and support for them is never forgotten. “They are each unique and amazing people to me, and I will encourage, nurture, promote and help guide them to becoming the best person they want to be,” Schumacher says. “I want them to remember that I was their champion for their life's journey. My children have reminded me so often that youth means vitality, fun, wonder, growing, and learning. It's invigorating for me to share time with them and watch their growth. We laugh and joke together, and in difficult times, we cry together. For me, having children, being a vet, and serving others is living the best life.”

Ashley & David
BRIDE
Story by Liesel Schmidt // Photos by Beebe Tran
While Ashley Barocco and David Colomb grew up in the same city and both attended LSU at the same time, it took a “tuna-four-ways” dinner at his brother and sister-in-law’s house for the two to finally meet. Months of 6:00 am sessions at David’s yoga class later, Ashley and David had begun talking and became almost inseparable. DECEMBER 2023 / JANUARY 2024

T
hree years later, the early morning yoga class tradition had continued—and one very special morning in April of 2023, the flow of their relationship led to a very different kind of pose. “I woke up at 5:00 am on Good Friday and got dressed for yoga class with David, and once class was over, we headed home,” Ashley recalls. “I decided that it would be a great time to take the electronic coin counter out of the backseat of my car to finally count all the coins that I’s been saving. Unbeknownst to me, David was waiting patiently for the coins to stop dropping to come upstairs to propose. As soon as he heard the machine turn off, he came running upstairs only to hear the bathroom door shut and the water turn on to begin a leisurely 20-minute soak.
“After I was done with my bath,” she goes on, “we started watching leaders tee off at the Masters, and I kept expecting him to go off to get ready for work. He started saying the sweetest things to me, and I looked at him and told him thank you, kissed him, and turned back to the TV. He did this a few more times, and then, out of nowhere, he jumped across me with the biggest smile on his face and got on one knee at the side of the bed. I really wasn’t paying attention at this point, but then he grabbed my hand and started going through a timeline of our relationship, the good, the bad, and everything in between. When I saw the ring box, I started to cry.”

The tears flowed again on August 5, 2023, when Ashley wore a strapless lace overlay gown with a sweetheart neckline and custom-made tulle shrug as she walked down the aisle at Beau Chêne Country Club in Mandeville to meet David at the altar. Surrounded by their four attendants and closest family and friends, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married by their friend, Blaine, who had been at their very first meeting. Newly united in marriage, the Colombs joined their guests in the ballroom at Beau Chêne, where they celebrated in style with an array of delicious food from Beau Chêne’s Chef Hosey, hours of dancing, and a huge donut cake topped by a white wedding cake with lemon filling, along with a chocolate cake with raspberry filling— combining the pastry skills of Haydel’s Bakery in New Orleans and Mary Lee’s in Mandeville.

BRIDE
Despite the tight timeline of having only three months to plan, the wedding was everything the newlyweds could have hoped for. “We just wanted to be married by the end of the year,” says Ashley. “I grew up in Beau Chêne Country Club. My family still lives on the ninth hole of the Oak Course. David’s family came to Beau Chêne when he was young to visit his grandfather, so we both have a love for this place. When we came to visit, they told us the only Saturday they had left was August 5, which also happened to be my birthday. What better way to spend my birthday than marrying the love of my life?”
