eeing your child injured or in a critical situation is any parent’s worst nightmare, and three years ago, that nightmare became a reality for Brendt Madden when her daughter, Bo, was in an accident that could have been fatal. “Her hair got entangled in a pool drain, she couldn’t free herself to come up for air,” Madden recalls. “She was unconscious by the time we pulled her out of the pool, and I had to do CPR to save her life.”
Heart Association, and she helped me to organize the event,” Madden explains.
After a very intense and extremely rough month, Bo had a very fortunate outcome and is doing well—but that experience was one that left a very lasting impression on her mother. “We met so many people along the way who helped take care of Bo, and they really brought our attention to the fact that CPR is what saves drowning victims and gives them the best chance at surviving. CPR saved Bo’s life and was crucial in getting her the oxygen she needed so desperately. Knowing this, CPR has been a lifesaving skill that I want to bring to others.”
Madden and her husband, Scott, have also joined Families United to Prevent Drowning and travel as advocates to speak at water safety conferences across the country. In 2023, Madden was invited as a keynote speaker at the American Heart Association’s Go Red Women’s Luncheon to bring her message about the importance of knowing CPR to the women gathered there. “CPR is something all women should know, as it involves their health and their empowerment,” says Madden. “It was an absolute honor to be invited to speak at the luncheon and a joy to go and talk to a room of such wonderful women. The Go Red campaign really hits close to home because of what happened with our daughter. It was such a surreal and crazy time in our lives—really just an unbelievable story. I feel so privileged to have been a part of what helped saved her."
Driven by that goal, Madden has since become a Red Cross CPR advocate and organized a community CPR event at Beau Chene Country Club. “One of the other moms in the neighborhood put me in touch with Christine at the American

is to not put off learning CPR for one more day. It’s an easy skill and one that—at the very least—can be learned online. There are many instructors out there that can help you learn this skill and empower you to save someone’s life one day. Anyone can do it, and it is offered free of cost online at the American Heart Association’s website. allow you to commit the skill to muscle memory. When you’re actively resuscitating a victim, you want your skills to come to you naturally, without having to think about them when you’re in the critical situation of having to use them.” In addition to speaking at the 2023 Go Red Women’s Luncheon for the AHA’s chapter on the Northshore, Madden has also spoken at the 2023 National Water Safety Conference in Colorado. She is a certified registered nurse anesthetist in Slidell and has been practicing for the past 13 years. She is also a licensed Realtor with Liuzza Realty Group. Her greatest joys are spending time with her husband and their three children, son Brigham (12) and daughters Bradley (nine) and Bo (seven). “They keep us very busy ,” Madden says, “and we feel so blessed to be able to watch all three of them grow up.”

mall business ownership is never an easy undertaking, and as the owner of local women's shop Luxe 83 Boutique, Katye Henry has her hands full keeping the store on-trend with clothing, accessories, shoes, gifts and everything else that her customers have come to know and love about Luxe. On top of that, she’s raising three children with her husband of eight years and teaching them the value of working hard to achieve personal dreams.
“This work is stressful, but it’s also definitely rewarding!” says Henry. “Being a mother, especially when two of them are under the age of seven, is a full-time job in itself, so working full-time outside of the house as well can be extremely challenging at times. Finding that mom life/work life balance is key, so I try my very best to maintain a proper balance. Even through the most challenging times, however, I know that what I’m doing is so important in creating an example for my kids. My being a working mom teaches my children that nothing is given to us, and everything is earned. We have to work for the things that we want in life, and I carry that over into home life, as well. I try to teach all three of them that hard work, dedication and responsibility are things that will help them later on in life.” A valuable tool to carry into all aspects of life and one she hopes to instill in her children is the determination to never give up and remember that hard work will pay off. “That’s really been a big
takeaway from business ownership for me,” she says. “I learned how to keep forging ahead, and I’m really proud of the success of my business and how far we've come over the last ten years. My sister and I started Luxe 83 with very little, but we continued to grow, even when times were difficult. We've weathered the challenges of hurricanes, a tanking economy and even the closures of COVID—all big things that could have brought the end to our dream. Still, we never gave up and just kept pushing. I've had two children since we started our business, and there were days that I just didn't think I could do it all. Finding a balance was very important, and I think learning how to do that has helped me be a better mom to my kids.” FEBRUARY 2024

SUPERMOM Bringing my kids joy makes me the happiest of anything that I do in life.”
At Dr. Todd S. Brasuell Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is to treat each child as if they are our own, to deliver the highest quality dental care, to introduce dentistry to children in a fun and entertaining environment, and to emphasize pediatric dentistry at a young age that will last a lifetime! We created our Dental Savings Plan because we believe that everyone should have access to this quality care. Consistent dental visits not only provide your child optimal oral care but are the best way to keep dental treatment costs down. It is also a great alternative for children that do not have dental insurance or that have recently lost their dental coverage. Our Dental Savings Plan is designed to provide greater access to affordable and quality dental care at reduced rates.
With a 17 year-old as well as a six-year-old and three-year-old at home, Henry is juggling a wide range of needs and interests to give them all individually and collectively the tools they need to thrive, the memories that will feed their souls, and the love that will nurture them. “As they get older and become independent, I want my children to remember how much I love them and hope they cherish all of the sweet memories that we make,” she says. “Bringing my kids joy makes me the happiest of anything that I do in life.” Henry and her family have made a tradition of taking vacations to the beach every summer and hope to incorporate more in the future. They also have many Christmas traditions, including baking cookies, watching Home Alone and reading “A Henry Christmas” together as a family. “My children have taught me to slow down and to appreciate the little things,” Henry says. “As a mother, I feel like I'm always rushing. Life is so fast-paced, but when I actually stop and soak up their little personalities, it makes me so proud and happy to be their mom!” 24

RIVER
Story: Liesel Schmidt Interior Design: Jeremy Corkern Design
While most of us never think beyond the function of a home, there are those who make their living from creating art in architecture, in seeing beyond the lifelessness of the blueprint and the stark calculations of measurements and elevations to the possibilities of what could be created. These are their canvases, their mediums and materials.

W
orking in partnership, Birmingham, Alabama-based architect Jeremy Corkern Designs and Atlanta design firm Suzanne Kasler Interiors conceptualized a home in New Orleans that embodies the vision of how design can move the needle in taking the construction of a home from simple function to one of form and luxury. The Creole-style courtyard house is a reflection of the client’s passion for architecture and design as well as attention to detail that, in concert with Corkern’s own expertise, made the project a harmonious collaboration. A passion for collecting provided an endless supply of unique and beautiful pieces to use throughout the home, which also made the editing process a challenging one.
Additional to the foundational design— the canvas—of white painted brick walls, black trimmed windows and alcoves adding variation to the front elevation, there are a wealth of features on which to focus, to study for their distinctive use. Mantels, architectural fragments and French oak floors whose unusual tone and finish seem almost essential to the overall design of the home. “The high-end finishes and unique elements throughout the house make it very different from most homes, but the finished product remains completely livable and comfortable,” notes the homeowner.

Boasting an interior aesthetic that tends toward modern with a casual feel, the eclecticism is a stark contrast to the vernacular architecture of the exterior. “The overall design of the house is amazing,” the homeowner says. “Jeremy Corkern Designs did an amazing job capturing everything that we wanted in the house and making it all work together flawlessly. The decorative items were curated by Suzanne Kasler and Greige Interiors, who were able to source the new and antique items from all over the world.”

SOCIAL LIVING
“It took a lot of special people working tirelessly together to make this house happen, and it is spectacular.”
Completed in April of 2021, the New Orleans home was originally planned to measure 6500 square feet, but continual changes to the design resulted in a floor plan comprising 9500 square feet. Throughout two levels, four bedrooms and seven bathrooms offer a great deal of space that, according to the homeowner, “doesn’t look or feel nearly as big as it ended up being.” With large living spaces came the need for design details and elements creating visual interest, comfort and personality. In the living room, two seating groups combine the use of tailored upholstery with table arrangements as well as vintage and antique chairs,
all of which create definition and a line of demarcation in the open plan between the living room and the kitchen into which the space flows. In the dining room, the homeowner’s antiques were given pride of place, including a stunning eighteenthcentury French chandelier, seventeenth-century Persian rug and a sixteenth-century French console. The bar area offers seating as well as spaces for casual meals, and the adjacent kitchen was given a more subtle, quieter tone in its Calcutta gold countertops and custom cabinetry, lit by custom handmade glass pendants hung over the island.

The master suite employs an artful contrast of forms, tones, textures and finishes as well as some of the homeowner’s favorite artwork, grounded by refinished antique wood flooring and anchored around an ultramodern bed from Christian Liaigre. A coffee bar with a drink chiller is nearby for morning coffee or bedtime drinks, and a luxurious ensuite bathroom features custom cabinets designed by the architect. “The house took so long to complete, and so many people put so much into the house to make it what it is,” says the homeowner. “It took a lot of special people working tirelessly together to make this house happen, and it is spectacular.”

Ms. Kelly Montgomery ART TEACHER • CEDARWOOD SCHOOL
How do you make learning fun for your students? Art is fun, so I just encourage them to use their creativity throughout class and to remember "there are no mistakes in art." If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be? My biggest message to my students is... Each and every one of them is an artist. I want them to always express themselves through creativity, but most importantly, have fun!
Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? My grandmother was my biggest inspiration. She was an elementary school teacher for over 40 years. She and I were very close. What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? My biggest challenge - trying to remind my students to have confidence in their artistic ability. What do you feel is the biggest reward? My biggest reward - I love seeing how proud the children are of their finished masterpiece.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
As women, we are born multitaskers, carrying the weight of so many responsibilities on our shoulders that stress becomes a very real, very dangerous issue. We juggle responsibilities at home and at work, feeling the guilt that comes with not always getting everything done—and our health suffers for it.
All Heart
It’s the wolf at the door that we don’t talk about. But it needs to be talked about.
It needs to be something we discuss, something we keep vigilant over, the way we do with so many other things that are less important.
BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
One in three. That’s how many women die from heart disease. More than breast cancer, more than any other cause of death, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. To bring awareness to this fact and create a dialogue that will lead to prevention and higher rates of survival, the American Heart Association launched their signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women, in 2004. Over the past 20 years, Go Red has become a nationwide battle cry, working in communities throughout the U.S. through chapters of the Association to reach women at the local level. In 2019, the American Heart Association of Greater New Orleans launched the Northshore Go Red for Women campaign. “Since its creation, the campaign has addressed the awareness and clinical care gaps of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women,” explains Coretta LaGarde, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Greater New Orleans. “It’s incredibly important to get the message out there because nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented, with the proper information and education.

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
“Nearly 45 percent of women from the age of 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease and may either not be aware or not be taking the needed steps to remove themselves from danger,” she continues. “Additionally, less than half of the women entering pregnancy in the U.S. have optimal cardiovascular health, which puts them at extreme risk. Women need to be made aware that their unique life stages—including pregnancy and menopause—can put them at an increased risk for CVD. The sooner they act, the greater chance they have at reversing their risk and saving their own lives.”
LaGarde stresses that certain women are more susceptible to CVD and therefore need to be especially aware of that risk. Traditionally, risk is calculated based on health factors such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and family history as well as lifestyle factors including smoking, lack of physical activity, poor diet, and weight. However, there are other factors that heighten risk, such as the use of certain medications as well as the presence of various health conditions more common to women than men, in addition to gender-specific biological factors that place women at a higher risk. “Female-specific factors include conditions related to pregnancy, such as miscarriage, preterm delivery, gestational diabetes, or preeclampsia, which is dangerously high blood pressure that develops late in pregnancy,” LaGarde explains. “Menstrual cycle history, the usage of certain types of birth control or hormone replacement therapy, and a history of polycystic ovarian syndrome are also factors.” 52
SOCIAL NORTHSHORE
According to studies conducted by the American Heart Association, women also are more likely than men to develop autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, which have been associated with a more rapid build-up of plaque in the arteries and worse outcomes after heart attacks and strokes. Plus, women are more likely to experience depression or PTSD, both of which are associated with a higher risk of developing CVD. In this, the centennial year of the American Heart Association, the Go Red for Women initiative is one that proves the invaluable work the organization has done over the past 100 years. And clearly, the work is far from done. “Heart disease and stroke can affect a woman at any age, making it vital for all women to understand their personal risk factors and family history,” says LaGarde. “We are losing a third of our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors, coworkers...that’s a third that we can’t bear to live without—and shouldn’t have to.”

stock and simmer for about 10 minutes. Then add the coconut milk and heavy cream bringing it to a boil. Season the soup with the tamarind, lime juice, fish sauce, creole spice and salt. With a hand blender buzz the soup for about a minute, this will puree some of the vegetables and corn resulting in a better flavor. Stir in the crabmeat and bring the soup to a boil. Serve in a bowl and garnish with some cilantro.

ZACH AND HALEY Story by Liesel Schmidt Photos by Sarah Moss Photography
While every couple has a unique story to how their happily ever after began, Haley Sandino and Zach Serpas’s is one filled with awkwardness, hot dogs…and fate.

“
e met in 2015, when we were both in high school,” explains Haley. “At the time, I was 15 and he was 16. Our first date was supposed to be to the aquarium, but my parents wouldn’t let me get in the car with someone they had never met, so he came to meet my entire immediate family on the same night as our date. Zach had to drive from Mandeville to Metairie, where I lived, to eat hot dogs and chili with my family. After dinner, we got to ride the golf cart—with my brother’s supervision. After he passed the hot dog test, Zach was invited back for steaks the next weekend, and the rest was history.”
Not quite, as the two dated for a year in high school and then broke up when Zach went to college in Texas. They reunited in 2019 and dated for three and a half years, and then…

“Zach and I had plans to go to Fontainebleau State Park, and he’d told me we were going to be taking family pictures for his grandma’s Christmas present that year and that the color scheme was white,” Haley recalls. “We got to the park, and he told me his mom and sister were running late, so we were going to start with individual pictures. He proposed within the first two minutes of taking pictures—probably because I was asking so many questions! Of course, I said yes. Zach likes to say he always knew we’d get back together and get married.”

A year later, Zach was proved right when Haley walked down the aisle at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Mandeville on October 20, 2023. Wearing a simple and classic square necked, fitto-flare gown with an open back and a long train with buttons trailing down the back, perfectly finished with a cathedral length veil, Haley exchanged vows with Zach and was pronounced married. Presented as man and wife, the couple joined their 130 guests for a reception at Maison Lafitte, where they enjoyed a delicious meal catered by The Lake House—with a few extra details that made the night a memorable one.

“We had maracas!” Haley says. “They were a hit for our last song on the dance floor. And, of course, Zach’s aunt did the splits out on the floor—everyone always loves that! The entire day was amazing. Every aspect of our wedding felt very personal, and I feel like that doesn’t happen anymore with things getting so over-the-top. It’s so easy to lose track of what the wedding is really all about, and I feel like we kept it about us and celebrating our love for one another and the commitment we were making.” Sweetening their night, the couple cut into a classic almond-flavored cake with praline and raspberry filling from Maple Street Bakery, decorated in simple white frosting with accents from Delphine Floral. Guests were also treated to miniature turtles from Haydel’s Bakery. “Everything was a hit,” Haley says.

BRIDE After being sent off with best wishes for a future filled with love, the newlyweds spent their honeymoon at the Sandals Dunn’s River all-inclusive resort in Jamaica. Now home in Madisonville, the Serpases are looking forward to a lifetime of sharing car rides, hot dogs… and years of Zach being proven right. At least, every once in awhile.

This year’s Bluesberry festival did not disappoint. Celebrating it’s name sake music genre and accompanying food with pride! The people of the Northshore came out to shop, listen to headliners a plenty, and taste an assortment of food truck choices lined by the pavilion circle. The Park was in full swing with multiple musician stages, over twenty pop-up shops, and a large kids tent with fun for the littles. Each food truck showcased a specialty blueberry-centered dish and each musician specialized in the festival’s genre of choice.

Rell, Relish, Relly - all my nicknames when spoken by dear friends and family fill my heart with love. So, what better name for my company than Rell Art? Hello! I’m Laurell Maniscalco Szczepanski. My Gam was a watercolorist and my Grandma Jenny was a seamstress who created gorgeous doll clothes — I got an amazing double blessing of creativity. I love Louisiana: its bold colors, culture and Mardi Gras family spirit. I’m loud. I love to dance. I love a party, SEC football, and people. I graduated from Mount Carmel Academy and Louisiana State University in art education. I live and create in Madisonville using paint, recycled glass, china, and resin to create 3D mosaics on canvas that remind people of the things in life that bring them joy. I am a wife, dance mom, soccer mom, daughter, sister, and friend blessed by each of these roles.
