Laissez les bon temps rouler...what a fun-filled 2023 carnival season we had! Social loves sharing all of the Krewes and the families that come out to yell, “Throw me something, Mister!” each year. Mardi Gras on the Northshore seems to grow more each year with royalty and float members throwing amazing, themed parties.

As you flip through the pages of our Mardi Gras in Review issue, you will read how the book 12 Days of Mardi Gras written by Supermom, Melissa Thibault, and illustrated by Supermom Nichole Dupre came to life. You will learn all about Susan Capitelli, founder of the Prima Donnas, as she shares how they grew from 6 members to 110! In our Art section, we are honored to showcase pieces from Sarah Hebert that are must have for holiday decorating or year-round for our lovers of all things Mardi Gras.

Spring is near and we are so ready to have our team out at all the upcoming events on the Northshore. We are so thankful for your support in making Social your go-to resource for business leaders, local charities, and community events. Make sure to check out our upcoming Kids issue in April!

Over the course of her career as an elementary school counselor, art teacher and school librarian, LSU alumnae Melissa Thibault has immersed herself in children’s literature for more than 15 years. A strong believer in the importance of literacy, Thibault integrated a great deal of reading into her programs during her time as a school counselor. Building on her love of books, she obtained her School Library Certification and is now an author in her own right. Thibault is inspired by her students and hopes to introduce a love of reading in every child she encounters. She lives in Louisiana with her daughter and their mischievous beagle, Nola.

After graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University with a BA in elementary education, a masters in curriculum and instruction, and an art certification, Nichole Dupre carved out a career as a visual artist. Using that foundation, she teaches art to elementary children in St. Tammany Parish public schools and owns her own company, Altered Art by Nichole, creating beautiful three-dimensional pieces inspired by the sights and culture of New Orleans.

MELISSA THIBAULT

TELL US ABOUT 12 DAYS OF MARDI GRAS BOOK.

12 Days of Mardi Gras is a picture book filled with repetition, alliteration, humor, and all things Mardi Gras. Set to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas, our book is engaging and fun to read and sing. As each day of the Mardi Gras season pases, a gift is given. Gifts many of us are familiar with including majestic masks, floatsa-rollin, sparkling shoes, and custom coconuts. Readers from all ages love this book! We catch our students singing it often.

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM TO WRITE THIS BOOK?

I'm the school librarian at Woodlake and author of our book. The idea came to me while I was living in South Dakota and trying desperately to explain Mardi Gras to my students. The nonfiction text in the back of the book was written with them in mind. Nichole Dupre, the book's illustrator and local artists is the art teacher at Woodlake. Altered Art by Nichole is her business name, but for our school everyone calls her Mrs. Dupre.

18 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

NICHOLE DUPRE

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Nichole Dupre. I am a mom, wife, teacher, and artist. I have worked in the St. Tammany school system for 26 years. Formerly as a first and third grade teacher; and now as an art teacher. I have a Master’s Degree, Reading Specialist degree, art certification, and am a National Board Certified Teacher. I began working at Woodlake Elementary School five years ago. I have enjoyed sparking the creative spirit in the students, PreK-3rd. Providing kids with the opportunity to participate in engaging art activities has been very rewarding- and dare I say, FUN! Art gives kids the chance to practice and hone many skills such as: fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and critical thinking. Watching the creative risks they take daily brings me so much joy and constantly amazes me.

HOW DID YOU AND MELISSA THIBAULT CONNECT TO WORK ON 12 DAYS OF MARDI GRAS TOGETHER?

It was at Woodlake that I met my friend Melissa Thibault, our school librarian. We immediately worked together so well as part of our school’s enrichment team. When she approached me to illustrate her book 12 Days of Mardi Gras, I was honored, but also hesitant. The world of publishing was completely new to me. Just as I encourage my students to take risks, I knew that I also had to put myself out there and try something new! I have always loved books and encouraging the love of reading in my students. Being on the business side was quite a learning experience!

It has been so exciting working with my colleague and friend on this project. The best part of this process has been seeing our book in the hands of kids and the joy that it brings. Watching families read this book together at literacy night, listening to kids sing the text aloud, and being presented with kids' OWN handmade books has been quite humbling.

WE ARE NOT JUST AHEAD OF THE CURVE - WE ARE DEFINING IT.

“Wow! Today I witnessed something I’ve never seen before. I took the two littles to VetNaturally. Boudreaux was a little anxious. Dr. G rubbed herself down with oils, let the babies sniff, gave them treats so they felt comfortable, and then performed acupuncture on Boudreaux for his anxiety before dimming the lights. I’ve NEVER seen anything like it. He literally melted in my arms. She then proceeded to spend time teaching me about my dog’s emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. We talked nutrition, exercise, toxins, play, chewing, scratching, and giving both dogs a monthly exam myself—because if I know what's normal, it’s easy to know and find when something is abnormal. She then went into a discussion about Boudreaux's anxiety and the impact it can have on his health, as well as what we can do about it. The staff was also amazing. I could go on for hours about how incredible this experience was, but instead, I’ll leave you with a pic of how relaxed and comfortable my babies were in this office. Zydeco was OUT! Boudreaux—OUT! They were completely comfortable and felt safe. I DON’T GET THIS KIND OF PAMPERING WHEN I GO TO THE DOCTOR.”

WEARING ALL THE HATS

Growing up in a family where Mardi Gras parades were a part of tradition, Sue Capitelli has always been deeply passionate about the festivities and all that came with them. “My earliest memories are from when my mom would take us to every parade she could,” Capitelli recalls. “Through rain, sleet, or sunshine, we were there! My family was in the Krewe of Elks truck parade on Mardi Gras Day for many years, and when I was old enough, I would help with the float designs for the group. I have lots of wonderful family memories of that.”

Naturally, as an adult, she continued her involvement with Mardi Gras and joined a krewe for herself. “I was with them for four years, which was always a great time,” says Capitelli, who moved to Mandeville with her husband, Bob, in 1983. “My family and friends would come watch me strut my stuff, and my daughter, Claire, was also in the group with me. After a few years, more of my family and friends wanted to join in on the fun, but the group was limited on space.”

And so, in 2009, Capitelli used her expertise in all things Mardi Gras to found a krewe of her own, the Prima Donnas. “Family is so important to me. I wanted the group to be mothers and daughters, sisters and good friends,” she explains. “Our first march consisted of just six lovely ladies. Over the years our group has grown, from six, to 29, to 56, to 110—and currently, we are up to 160 gorgeous ladies and have a waitlist! As our group has grown, we have all become family. This sisterhood has women who travel from all over the country, as well as internationally, to be with their Prima Donnas sisters. We all have such a special bond.”

Under Capitelli’s leadership, the Prima Donnas have worked with many charities over the years, including Habitat for Humanity, the American Heart Society, the American Cancer Society, Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Hope House, and The Greater Covington Junior League.

As the queen of the krewe, Capitelli has a great deal of responsibility, but also a lot of support from the women who surround her. “We have 10 royal officers and 13 captains,” she says. “Soon after we’ve wrapped up another successful Prima Donna Day, we get started

28 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

on preparations for next year. Together, we brainstorm themes, discuss ideas on how to improve and continue to build our organization, and begin planning. The royals’ duties also include communication through email, sourcing accessories, illustration design boards of bustiers, designing t-shirts and specialty throws and providing guidance to their groups. The captains also help the ladies in their group with bead parties, advice, and are in charge of our annual masquerade ball, which is always fabulous. From there, it is a very busy year! My daughter Claire and I work to reserve the venues for our events for the year—the Hat Party, Masquerade Ball and Grand Luncheon, as well as hotel accommodations and balcony space. Additionally, we get insurance for the group, hire photographers, security and a jazz band, secure all permits and ensure we have a police escort. There are a lot of moving parts. And once our theme is decided, I start designing the headpieces.”

Those headpieces, in fact, are a major part of Capitelli’s life, both in her role with the Prima Donnas as well as her professional life. The owner of Haute Dames Couture, Capitelli has made a name for herself as a milliner, along with her business partner, “Royal” Debbie Evans. “We make the headpieces for each group, which usually takes us a few months to complete,” Capitelli says. “The Prima Donnas have a different theme every year, and our 13 groups each have a different headpiece design that coordinates with the theme. In August, we have our Hat Party to kick off our next Prima Donna season, reveal the theme, unveil the hat and design inspirations, and select headpieces for each group.”

In her work as the owner of Haute Dames, Capitelli creates gorgeous hats and fascinators for all occasions. Her artwork and hats have been sold at the Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans, as well as boutiques and gift stores throughout the French Quarter. “We have had hats travel to the Kentucky Derby and even to London to have tea with the Queen,” she says. “We even showcased our hats in New York Fashion Week and walked the runway. Our hats and fascinators were also featured at New Orleans Fashion Week.”

The Beautyof Caring

Childhood is a time that should be filled with magic, possibility and endless wonder. But for many children, those years of innocence are shadowed by the worries of medical issues that necessitate long hospital stays filled with doctors’ consultations, examinations, treatments, tests and surgeries.

As part of an ethos that makes philanthropy a tenet of the brand, Kendra Scott has created the Kendra Cares program, giving the children in pediatric hospitals and their caregivers a much-needed respite from their daily reality to design and customize their own piece of jewelry, at no cost to them. “Kendra came up with the idea while touring the pediatric floor at MD Anderson in Houston,” says Carol Anne Massey, Regional Marketing and Philanthropic Manager for the Gulf Coast/Louisiana region. “This was the same hospital that treated her stepfather for cancer. She wanted to give patients a break from their challenges and give them a sense of joy and normalcy to their lives. Through our Kendra Cares program, we offer a creative arts program that brings the magic and joy of our Color Bar™, and at the same time, we are able to support local communities in a very big way.

“We’re honored to share that what started in a single children’s hospital has now expanded into a creative arts program at over 30 top ranked pediatric hospitals across the country,” Massey continues. “Locally, we have worked with the Child Life Specialist at Children's Hospital of New Orleans, Ochsner Children's Hospital and Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital.”

The Kendra Cares program appeals to all ages—and not solely to those who are patients. During the experience, each pediatric patient and their caregiver designs their own piece, under the direction of a local team who bring a variety of Color Bar™ styles and stones for a one- to two-hour timeframe. “All patients are encouraged to participate, and there are printable coloring sheets that can be brought to isolated patients by a hospital representative,” says Massey. “Our team will create the piece and send it back to the patient with a handwritten note. There are three stations that create the Kendra Cares experience, and each focuses on healing patients and families and taking their minds away from their diagnosis or treatment. Each station should take approximately five to ten minutes, and our volunteers walk through all three stations with the same patient. Caregivers are welcome to stay with the patient or walk through the steps on their own with a separate volunteer.”

IMPACT & GIVE BACK
40 SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

In 2022, the Kendra Cares program gifted 4,000 pieces of jewelry to patients and caregivers nationwide. But what those children and their caregivers received was more than just a beautiful piece of jewelry—it was time, attention and a break to focus on creativity. “Philanthropy is more than what we do—it’s who we are,” Massey explains. “We exist to create good in the world and live it every single day.”

Another part of that good they have created stems from the Kendra Gives Back Program. “This initiative allows our local store fronts to partner with nonprofit organizations or individuals in need and donate 20 percent of sales generated throughout hosted events both in-store and on location,” Massey notes. “In 2022, we hosted over 10,000 Kendra Gives Back events that gave back over four million dollars to local causes across the country! Locally, we have worked with over 500 nonprofit partners across Louisiana and gave back $172,764 in 2022. With the support of our customers, scientists are closer to finding a treatment to metastatic breast cancer, families and youth have more access to mental health resources, and college students are equipped with the resources they need to build innovative, creative businesses.

“Personally, accepting a position with Kendra Scott was life changing,” Massey goes on. “It is so much more than a career; it’s a way of life. I have always encouraged and participated in volunteer efforts with my children, and this just gave me the platform to live that lifestyle every single day. The company motto of ‘You do good’ is empowering. Kendra Scott is a young company in the grand scheme of things, but I know this philanthropic platform will change lives greatly over the coming years. It is truly inspiring.”

LEADING FEMALE PLASTIC SURGEON IN MANDEVILLE, LA

Dr. Michele Cooper

What Patients Are Saying

“…She was there for me every step of the way…”

When I went to Dr. Cooper, I was very nervous and afraid. I mean elective surgery is a big step. Not only did she make me feel at ease, I felt she was sincere. She didn’t make me feel as though I really needed the surgery. If anything, I walked out of there with more self confidence and that was before I actually had the surgery. She was there for me every step of the way, before and after. I have received so many compliments from the work she did. I have and will continue to recommend her to everyone.

“…Very comforting…”

I have been loving my new look ever since my surgery about 4 years ago. I enjoyed meeting Dr. Cooper and found her very comforting. She was able to give me the natural look I was going for!

“…Meticulous in every detail…”

Dr. Cooper and her staff are meticulous in every detail both medically and aesthetically. Most impeccable taste is also displayed throughout her Mandeville office building, adorned with marvelous furnishings and gallery art work.

THE MYSTIC KREWE OF TITANS

Royal Ball

The Mystic Krewe of Titans presented its 2023 MardiGras Ball at the Harbor Center in Slidell. This coed Krewe was established in 2010 by a group of Carnival veterans who wanted to bring the merriment of Mardi Gras to the streets of Slidell in a high-quality, family-oriented, nighttime parade. The Krewe of Bilge held its annual Coronation Ball at The Harbor Center in Slidell. The Krewe of Bilge was founded in 1978 by a few local residents who costumed and decorated their boats to parade along the canals of the Eden Isles subdivision in celebration of the Carnival season. Today it has over 400 members. In addition to its boat parade, the Krewe also conducts social events throughout the year for its members and hosts one of the area’s largest poker runs held on the Sunday of every Memorial Day weekend.

GOING THE DISTANCE

When Bernadette Zrenner and William Dossett met in the Long Island, in 2018, German-born Bernadette lived in Vienna, while Louisiana boy Will was working Wall Street in New York.

As different—and as far apart—as their worlds were, the two decided to make a go of having a longdistance relationship. Complicated as things were, they were making it work…and then 2020 happened. “While any transatlantic relationship is a challenge, we had the most fun trips possible, traveling to Rome, Budapest, throughout Greece, Berlin, Munich, and all over Austria,” Bernadette says. “In between, we enjoyed talking on the phone every day and plotting the next adventure. As we eagerly awaited a trip planned for April of 2020, I learned about the travel ban and called William at what happened to be early morning for him. He was not happy about being woken up, believing this to be a two-week ban, max! Then as the pandemic settled in for the long haul, we fumed that our lives were dictated by callous, national governments. We even contemplated trips to different countries to meet up, but the regulations kept changing.”

As much as they loved each other, when a loophole came to light, their answer—and their future—became clear. “Fiancés, or ‘lifelong partners,’ we learned, were to be considered married couples by the Austrian government, and therefore William was allowed to enter Austria to visit,” Bernadette explains. “With the stroke of a pen, William was my fiancé, and soon was on a plane to Vienna. By September 2021, I was able to move to New York City, where we could finally close the gap.”

Engaged on paper as they were, there was still the small matter of an actual proposal. “On a Friday night, before Thanksgiving of 2021, I came home from work and suggested that we go up to the rooftop to see the view,” says William. “We bundled up in heavy peacoats and took a good cocktail up to the roof. The midtown skyline dominated the view, even from a half mile away, and Bernadette stood at the rail to take it all in. Wondering why I wasn’t right beside her, she turned around, only to see me down on one knee, holding a ring. In the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world, we had that moment together and enjoyed our news for a while before telling anyone else.”

Just short of a year later, on October 1, 2022, Bernadette wore a high-necked ballgown with a lace bodice and silk skirt to meet William at the altar in a beautiful oak grove in Money Hill, Abita Springs. On property that has been in William’s family for over a hundred years, the couple exchanged vows with 250 of their friends and family there to witness. “Money Hill is such a special place for William’s family,” says Bernadette. “With three boys, the Dossetts never thought they’d get to host a wedding there! My family, who are passionate about golf and love long walks, were enchanted by Money Hill, so it was the perfect place for everyone.”

After being pronounced married, the couple joined their guests for a reception under a tent on the grounds, where they all dined on a very special selection of foods. “The food represented our roots— William grew up partly in Mississippi and Louisiana, and I grew up in Germany,” Bernadette notes. “We wanted all of our favorite things to be served at the reception.”

From soft German pretzels to crawfish maque choux, the reception was indeed an international affair, sweetly finished off with a beautifully created five-tier cake covered in white fondant with decorative oak leaves and a white magnolia draped around it, boasting the flavors of Black Forest cherry and butter cream. After celebrating their newly joined lives, the happy couple were sent off to start their future together, beginning with a honeymoon in Seaside, Florida. Now back home in New York City, the newlyweds are looking forward to spending the rest of their days on the same side of the ocean.

TEACHER

feature

MS. MARCELLE

DELAUNE

TEACHER AT ST. SCHOLASTICA ACADEMY

I graduated from St. Scholastica Academy in ’97, graduated from LSU in Art Ed in ’01, and I’ve been a teacher at SSA for 19 years. My daughter is also an SSA Graduate from the class of ’21. I'm an SSA Alumna, SSA teacher, and parent of an SSA Alumna... the trifecta! I'm also married to Kevin Delaune (SPS graduate '94) for 22 years, and our two sons, Baylor & Brody, attend SPS as a Junior and a Freshman respectively.

Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

I am a 1997 graduate of SSA and my high school teachers at SSA were very influential in my decision to become a teacher. Two teachers in particular, John Harty, who always made class fun and engaging and Francie Rich, who made sure I knew she cared made the biggest impression on me as a student. I try to emulate both of their teaching styles in my classroom.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

The biggest challenge as a teacher is balance! Teaching is not a 9-5 job, where you leave it at the office. There is a lot of planning and grading, and balancing that with my personal life is a big challenge.

What do you feel is the biggest reward?

The biggest reward to me is keeping in touch with all “my girls” and watching them continue their journey. I follow them on social media and have had the privilege of watching them become nurses, doctors, lawyers, artists, teachers, entrepreneurs, and more. After nineteen years at SSA, the majority of my students are married with kids and I'm so proud of them.

How do you make learning fun for your students?

I’m always changing things up and redesigning my projects to what’s relevant to my students’ lives. I want to make class about my students, and I want them to know I care. If they feel I’m invested in them- chances are they’ll invest themselves in my class. Some things I do in class…

• starting every class with a roll question- Where I ask the class a question and when I call roll- instead of them saying “here or present” they answer the question. Questions range from what’s your favorite ____, if you could take a trip to anywhere - where would you go, would you rather sweet or salty. It’s a great way to get to know my students and for them to get to know each other.

• class playlist (each student submits songs for a class playlist… we ALWAYS have music playing during Art class)

• I like to do demonstrations in different voices and accents (anything to keep them entertained and engaged).

If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be?

There is no such thing as perfection. Always try your best and give everything your best effort…. If at first you don’t succeed, try again and again and again. Never give up!

SARAH HEBERT

Sarah Hebert is a completely self-taught artist from Houma, Louisiana. She's always been on the creative side, but never picked up a paint brush or a palette knife until after graduating college. Being a full time artist, she spends most of her days up in her home studio painting with various different textures and a whole lot of GOLD! Through years of experimenting to find her niche in the art world, she discovered her love for texture, incorporating gold into her paintings, and the excitement of bringing collectors' visions to life. When she's not in the studio, she spends her time being a full time wife and mom of two. She points out how important it is to her to be a role model for her kids to show them how far hard work and determination can get you. It definitely helps to have the best support team behind you along they way!
