CORPORATE
GIVER
Caitlin Hunter
By Liesel Schmidt
A
s corporate affairs representative for Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico business unit headquartered in Covington, Caitlin Hunter is responsible for helping the company serve and support the local community. As someone who is passionate about giving back, this is a role she fills with ease. “I’m very proud to work for a company that gives so much to the community and encourages its employees to become personally involved through volunteering,” Hunter says.
While Chevron is a multinational brand, Hunter’s work is such that it keeps her focused at the local level, honed in on what the corporation can do at home. “I love my job because it allows me to build relationships with various civic and charitable leaders and make valuable contributions on the Northshore,” she says. “This is both professionally and personally rewarding. My responsibilities are also dynamic and multifaceted, which keeps my work interesting and challenging. My position allows me to be a part of Chevron’s efforts to make a difference and offers me a sense of purpose as we make a positive impact in the communities we serve. “My passion for giving stems from a combination of personal values, awareness of social responsibility, and a desire to make a positive impact,” she goes on. “Like many people, I have a great deal of empathy, which drives me to help others. My sense of purpose gives me deep fulfillment when I can contribute to meaningful causes. My father, Dan O’Sullivan, was a special education teacher in Slidell for over 30 years, and he taught me the importance of giving at an 14

early age. It’s really rewarding and motivating to play a small part in making a positive difference in the world.” Some of Hunter’s favorite initiatives through Chevron have been STEM education programs such as Project Lead the Way, as well as robotics clubs and working with area school boards on curriculum implementation. “Our youth development programs support, empower and educate at-risk children and teens, helping them build essential life skills and a better future,” she says. “I’m very grateful to community members like treasurer John Schroder, Parish President Mike Cooper, and Mayor Mark Johnson for introducing me to some of the Northshore's amazing nonprofit organizations and their initiatives.” Alongside Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico’s Corporate Affairs Team, Hunter has also been working with Humanity St. Tammany West and Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana for over ten years. She has also sat on the HFHSTW board of directors for the last three years. “I am passionate about working with organizations like Habitat and the Boys & Girls Clubs because they make a meaningful impact in our community,” she says. “The Boys & Girls Club gives young people a safe and nurturing environment, helping them build a foundation for a great future. And Habitat’s mission of providing affordable housing resonates with my belief in the importance of stability. Working with these organizations, I’ve had opportunities to contribute to positive change and help those in need, which is incredibly fulfilling.”
COMMUNITY LEADER
Having lost both her father and stepfather to lung cancer in the span of two years, Hunter has become a vocal advocate for smoking cessation and works in partnership with Ochsner’s smoking cessation program. “In 2021, Chevron joined with their foundation to offer our community a comprehensive smoking cessation program to help people quit smoking, prevent teens from smoking and promote a low-dose CT lung scan for active smokers in an effort to catch signs of early-stage cancer,” she explains. “Chevron supported several high school outreach education projects and a statewide public service announcement that told my story. I felt tremendously humbled to be a part of it.” Hunter and her husband are raising their teenage daughter on the Northshore. Outside of work, Hunter is an avid cheer and volleyball mom, Saints fan, and traveler. Community involvement is also significant to her, so she volunteers with her daughter’s school, Our Lady of the Lake, as well as Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, Northshore Food Bank, Northshore Community Foundation and Crown Athletics. She has also hosted three annual golf tournaments in memory of her dad, Dan O’Sullivan, with proceeds benefiting STARC of Louisiana. “These experiences have allowed me to give to the community that has given me so much and to develop valuable skills related to teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving,” she says. “I’m so proud of the work that I am able to do and look forward to continuing to serve the Northshore and Louisiana.”

COMMUNITY NEEDS:
SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA’S LONGSTANDING SERVICE BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
T
he landscape of New Orleans and southeast Louisiana has changed a great deal over the past 127 years—industry, financial crises and stock market crashes, economic booms, prohibition, epidemics, devastating hurricanes, pandemics, and gentrification—but one thing that hasn’t changed in that century plus is need.
the 16 parishes of Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, and Washington. The organization offers more than 30 distinct programs catering to the needs of their outreach within those parishes, including behavioral health services, which emphasize mental health rehabilitation and counseling; children and family services; adoption and maternity; and family focused recovery services, which offer substance use recovery support for pregnant and parenting women. In addition to these programs, they extend support by providing housing options for various segments of the population, including people experiencing homelessness, Veterans, families, seniors, adults in recovery, individuals with disabilities in need of permanent supportive housing, and those seeking residential re-entry services.
Meeting the needs of the southeast Louisiana communities has been the driving force behind Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana since it was founded shortly after the national organization, Volunteers of America, was established in 1896. At the time, the organization's founders, social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth, dedicated themselves to the very same mission that continues to drive the organization today: “Our mission of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana is to uplift and empower individuals and communities by providing a range of vital services that promote stability, self-sufficiency and well-being,” “Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana provides essential support says Michelle Mangum, marketing, communications & PR strategist to community members in need,” says Mangum. “We are a safety net for VOASELA. “We aim to enhance the quality of life for those we serve for vulnerable individuals and offer a lifeline for people in crisis or facing and create a more just and equitable society. Upon request, VOASELA will provide you with information for the wish or wishes you can fulfill. Making a monetary gift to Christmas Wish is another way that contributors can help make the holidays brighter for community members in need.

ompleted in December of 2022, the Ziegler home in Perdido Key may not have had much time for its walls to weather or its floors to show the wear of years, but owners Sherri and Joey have still made memories in their year of living there, celebrating their first Christmas and soaking in the sight of the sunrises and sunsets as they wash over the sky.
“They are stunning,” says Sherri, a real estate agent with Levin Rinke Realty, while Joey is the mortgage manager for Regions Mortgage in Pensacola. “It’s very relaxing and peaceful here, and we truly love everything about it. But most of all, I would say creating memories with our family and friends is what truly makes it wonderful.”

SOCIAL LIVING
Boasting 4,488 square feet with 14 rooms in total including five bedrooms and four baths, the West Indies-style home comprises three levels, with two levels of living spaces built on top of pilings and a garage level. Built by Thomas Cutts Construction, the exterior is white board and batten offset with a dark bronze metal roof and dark bronze accents. Continuing the theme, the porch ceilings are ebony stained tongue and groove, with matching Bahama shutters and corbels that add to the West Indies look of the home, while gas lanterns on the front porch give the home a hint of Southern charm. “The overall design of the home is striking to people, and the location of it being situated on the intercoastal waterway overlooking Johnson's Beach with Gulf views and on a private canal in Grande Lagoon make it even more special,” says Sherri. “We love the water and enjoy boating, which is why we were so interested in this particular location. The proximity to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and also Pensacola by boat, played a large part, as well. It's a plus that we get to see the Blue Angels fly from our back porch when they have a show or practice their maneuvers.”

It’s very relaxing and peaceful here, and we truly love everything about it.”
Inside, the interior has a modern flare, created by Sherri’s vision and the expertise of V Home & Interiors in Mandeville. “They helped us in selecting the furnishings and lighting for our bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen,” she says. “They offer beautiful furnishings and accessories and are very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. This home is made up of everything that we both love and enjoy.” A particular favorite in the house is the “man cave”—which, according to Sherri, was the inspiration for the color scheme throughout the home. “I wanted a masculine, speak-easy vibe that is warm and inviting.” With its charcoal walls, raw wood coffered ceilings, white oak flooring and massive chandelier, the room is precisely that—masculine in feel without being intimidatingly so, rather feeling cozy in its monochromatism and elegant finishes. “I knew I wanted to paint the space black before we even built the home,” Sherri explains. “Once the room was painted, it created the theme for the interior. There is a touch of black in each room of the home.”

SOCIAL LIVING
Indeed, it does, though black features were artfully chosen for each space in a way that keeps the color from being overwhelming or heavy. In the kitchen, white custom cabinetry traces along the back wall of the space, juxtaposing a coal black center island and matching cabinetry on a perpendicular wall. Calacatta Trevi quartz countertops with full height splash add a cool sleekness, contrasted by a suite of ZLine appliances in black stainless with champagne bronze accents and a black stainless-steel sink. “We love the layout and open design of the kitchen,” says Sherri. “The large island makes cooking and entertaining so much fun.”
The butler's pantry and laundry rooms are additional favorite spaces in the house, respectively making morning wake ups easier with a built-in Wolf Coffee System and laundry tasks just a little less tedious. “I wanted a fun space in the laundry room and love how the tile design turned out,” says Sherri. “We carried that theme into the butler's pantry, bringing in warmth with the walnut countertop, and having all of the storage is a plus.”

SOCIAL LIVING
In the master bedroom, a tongue and groove vaulted ceiling overhead seems purposefully incongruous to an opulent chandelier. “The chandelier is my favorite thing in the room, and it really helps to create that romantic atmosphere,” says Sherri. An adjoining sitting area with a vaulted ceiling and a bank of windows offer the perfect space to read or enjoy the view. The master closet was designed to meet the couple’s specific needs, complete with a large island with hidden doors for laundry hampers. In the master bath, large format black veined marble tile flows into a walk-in shower, and a window offers natural light just above the freestanding tub. “We really enjoy the view while we’re getting ready,” says Sherri. “It’s really peaceful.”

T
he idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.
Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.
Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service. Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

ERICA MAJORS BY LIESEL SCHMIDT
E
rica Majors worked for 13 years as an ER nurse before having her first child in 2018, and then she transitioned to work of another kind, as a full-time, stay-at-home mom. As much as she loved nursing, Majors wouldn’t trade her life now for one more minute in the ER. “I’m slightly older than most of my children’s friend’s moms, but I don’t mind it,” she says. “I am so proud and thankful that I had 13 years to focus on myself and my career. Now, I’m able to give my girls 100 percent of my time! I think of it as this: I had my time. I had 13 years to advance my career as a nurse, and I did! I traveled, I gave 110 percent to my job and loved every second. But once I had Mary Michael, everything changed. I was happy to give up ‘my’ time. Since having her and Peyton, this has been their time. It’s their time to learn, grow, and have fun. I think that’s a plus of having children later in life and being fortunate enough to have a husband who can allow me to stay home.”

With a five and four-year-old at home, Majors stays busy taking them to various sports practices, games, dance class, gymnastics, and tumbling as well as coaching her daughters’ T-ball, soccer, and basketball teams. “My girls are the center of my world,” Majors says. “They definitely keep me running, but seeing them happy and thriving makes it all worth it. I had to buy a calendar this year, and everything is now color coded to keep track of everything. They love being busy, and I love that they want to try everything.

“I’m so proud of my girls,” she goes on. “Seeing and feeling their love makes me want to be the best mom I can be. Being told by their teachers that they are kind, helpful, and a good friend at school makes my heart so full. I volunteer at Madisonville Elementary as much as I can for PTA and every time I’m there, I hear little kids yelling, ‘Hey, Mary Michael’s mom!’ My daughter said, ‘I need to teach my friends that your name is Erica,’ but I told her, absolutely not, I’m proud to be ‘Mary Michael’s mom’ or ‘Peyton’s mom.’ It makes me smile every time I hear it.”
In the coming years as her daughters become young women and, eventually, adults, Majors wants them to “look back at their childhood and laugh, thinking about how we celebrated everything,” she says. “I want them to remember being woken up on their birthdays with mom and dad singing happy birthday and throwing balloons at them. I want them to remember the house being decorated over-the-top for their first day of school, waking up to their favorite breakfast on dance recital day and getting their nails painted, decorating for Christmas on November first every year because it’s their favorite holiday…that’s my biggest memory from my childhood—my mom always made it a point to celebrate everything, so I want to do the same for my girls! I want them to remember that mom was always there and always their biggest cheerleader at everything they do in life!” Even at 41, Majors admits that she has learned a great deal from her daughters, watching them and spending time with them. “I learn from my children every day,” she says. “Just simple things that we forget as grown-ups. Watching and listening to them giggle while they’re jumping in water puddles in the driveway is just one of those simple reminders to slow down and enjoy life. It’s a reminder to enjoy the time you have with your babies, before they’re all grown up.”

aving met in middle school, the two didn’t start dating until the summer before their sophomore year of high school. “Before I got my driver’s license, I rode the bus with Chris’s childhood friend, Nelson, and he and a couple of other mutual friends introduced us,” Sophia says. “We had our first official date at the Relay for Life, which was held at Covington High’s stadium back then. We spent the whole night walking, talking, and laughing together.” Over the next nine years, they had more of those nights, strengthening the roots of their relationship as they finished college and grew into the people they wanted to become. Then, on September 10, 2022, the moment that changed their relationship forever finally came.
“We’d spent the afternoon on a boat on the Tchefuncte River with Chris’s friend, Brandon,” says Sophia. “As evening approached, we made our way towards Madisonville and Lake Pontchartrain. Then when we arrived at the mouth of the lake, we went towards the Madisonville Lighthouse, where he proposed! It was beautiful. After the proposal, we took the boat to The Blind Tiger restaurant and bar on the river, where Chris arranged for our close friends and family to be waiting. That was the part that really made me teary-eyed. Our parents, grandparents, siblings and even some friends from out of town were all waiting to celebrate with us. It was the most perfect day and a perfect proposal.” To be followed by an even more perfect day…
…when Sophia walked down the aisle at St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington on May 13, 2023, wearing a strapless mermaid silhouette gown with a sweetheart neckline and floral lace overlay to meet Chris at the altar—with a special touch. “I wore a blusher walking down the aisle,” Sophia explains. “This was something I really wanted that you don't see often these days—although, I think they may be making a comeback. Having the blusher on added a special moment for my father and me in the ceremony. It was sweet having him flip the blusher as I transitioned from his hand to Chris's.”

Vows exchanged, the couple and their wedding party joined their guests for a reception at the Madisonville Maritime Museum featuring a delicious mixture of seafood and traditional Southern cuisine. Of course, there was a proper celebration going on. “Besides doing the obvious reception duties—the first dance, father-daughter dance, mother-son dance—we spent almost the entirety of our reception dancing together and with our friends and family,” Sophia recalls. “We truly had the best night of our lives!”

After being sent off to start their honeymoon, the newly married Coynes flew off to St. Lucia, where they stayed at Calabash Cove Resort. “It was beautiful and so much fun!” Sophia says. TEACHER
e r u t a fe
Ms. Kelly Zito KINDERGARTEN • MADISONVILLE ELEMENTARY
Who, specifically, in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? I have had several amazing teachers influence me to become a teacher along the way, too many to count. I have special memories of my Kindergarten teacher that have always stuck with me. She had a special way of connecting with her students and their families.
What do you feel is the biggest reward? My biggest reward is seeing my students happy to learn and be with me at school. It is such a rewarding feeling when your students want you to be proud of them and their work. How do you make learning fun for your students? I try to make learning fun by making up songs and dances to help them remember important skills. I also have them get up, move around, and discuss what we are learning throughout the day. If you could leave your students with one message, what would it be? I hope that my students know that I care about them, even on our hard days. I also hope that they know that they will always be loved by me, even after they leave my class.
What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? My biggest challenge as a teacher is meeting all of the different needs of my students both academically and emotionally. It is challenging, but so rewarding to see how far they grow by the end of the year.
