“Over the years, our team has demonstrated remarkable resilience through some of the most challenging times in its history, including recoveries from Hurricane Katrina, the national economic downturn, the BP oil disaster and the COVID-19 pandemic,” says O’Daniels. “My aspirations for community leadership were driven by a combination of factors and personal values that I held dear. First, I’ve always had a strong sense of community and a desire to make a positive impact on the places I call home. Additionally, my career in tourism at Visit The Northshore exposed me to the potential of the tourism industry to not only boost the local economy but also to foster a sense of pride and identity within a community. This experience deepened my commitment to community involvement, as I saw firsthand how tourism could be a powerful force for positive change.”

The world was a very different place when Donna O’Daniels joined the team at Visit The Northshore in 1996. The Internet was still in its early stages of development for public use, cell phones had yet to become invented, and the concept of social media was so abstract that it seemed the conjuring of science fiction. We lived in a pre-9/11 society, and the possibility of a worldwide pandemic that would shut life down for an entire year was the stuff of movies.

Over the past three decades, O’Daniels has ridden through some of the greatest storms we’ve experienced in recent history—both literally and figuratively—as well as some of the biggest technological advances, helping to usher the community of St. Tammany Parish both in its pursuits of encouraging and growing tourism as well as creating a sense of pride. She spent nine years as Director of Communications and Marketing and was promoted to President and CEO in 2005.

“I felt a sense of duty to lead and guide my organization, which naturally extended to a broader commitment to community leadership and, in turn, motivated me to leverage my skills and expertise to enhance the community’s well-being through tourism and marketing strategies,” she goes on. “I am so energized by research and potential projects that can make a positive difference across the parish. It’s an honor to lead this organization and watch our efforts help our partners. I get so inspired when someone says they saw our brand, that a social post helped their business, or that our team helped their event be a success.”

Under O’Daniels’s leadership of Visit The Northshore, the area has grown to numbers that command the fourth largest government revenue generated by visitors, with $1.03 billion in visitor spending and 2.9 million visitors in 2022. “That is huge for a community like ours,” O’Daniels notes. Visit The Northshore has also won numerous awards from Southeast Tourism Society, Louisiana Travel Association, and other local organizations.

O’Daniels credits the example of various individuals who have been in her life for helping shape the leader she is today—and she strives to pass that on to others who come into her path. “I was recently bestowed one of the greatest honors of my career, the Marion ‘Butch’ Fox Advocacy Award from the Louisiana Travel Association, named for a treasured mentor for me and so many others in our industry,” she says. “My mentors have inspired me to do the same for others. I take great pride in mentoring professionals who are the future of our industry as so many did for me. I also want to be remembered as a servant leader that didn’t back down from a challenge, as a champion for our young professionals who makes them feel as though what they are doing matters—not only for their career development, but also for our community’s overall vision.”

ASHLEY GEOGHEGAN

Veterinarian and owner of VetNaturally, Dr. Ashley Geoghegan, has had a fascinating career that has given her a unique take on how to care for her patients.

Beginning her vet career as a Captain in the US Army, Geoghegan led the way in treatment of the military working dogs and was integral in establishing their adoption program which still exists today. Later in her career, she created a mobile hospital on wheels with a fully functional operating room and catered to pets in their home environments. It was here that she was given insight into every aspect of a pet’s life, from sleeping habits to daily activities. This perspective, coupled with her holistic education at the Chi University eventually led her to create VetNaturally. CRYSTAL FERRIS

As the owner of Rehab Dynamics, Crystal Ferris’s why is simple: “I was an athlete growing up, so when I hurt my ankle my senior year playing volleyball, I had to go through physical therapy. Seeing what they did, I knew that it was what I wanted to do with my life, and my path was set. I’ve always loved helping people achieve their goals and to feel their best, and now I get to be part of that journey for others every day.”

In 2007, Ferris joined the team at Rehab Dynamics and later became partner in 2009. In 2013, she bought the practice. Expanding her business, Ferris recently opened Rehab Dynamics Wellness, offering body contouring, radio frequency micro-needling, and the EmSella chair to address the various needs of her clients outside of physical therapy, including such concerns as weight issues, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, back pain, and posture.

As a role model for other women in business, Ferris offers this advice: “No one knows how hard it is to be a business owner until they’ve been one, but even when it’s hard, don’t give up! It’s not all unicorns and rainbows, and you will have some very low points and some incredible highs. But watching your dreams come true is the most awesome thing, and all the hours you put in will be worth it when you are living out your wildest dreams! I love that I get to lead a team of amazing people and help so many in our community by giving them the professional, one-on-one care they need and deserve.”

WE: What's the last thing you read?

CF: Housemaid. Talk about a crazy, messed up story, but it was such an easy read! I finished it in 48 hours.

WE: What famous person do you most want to meet in person and why?

CF: Olivia Culpo. She inspires me with everything she does in business, the way she carries herself, how well rounded she is and—most of all—I love her fashion sense!

WE: What is the best gift you've ever received?

CF: My kids—they’re the gift that keeps on giving!

WE: Would you rather travel to the past or the future?

LA: The past! I’m such a history nerd and love old, beautiful antiques of all decades. I could see the beauty in any time period.

WE: What do you miss most from your childhood?

LA: The absence of electronic devices—especially cellphones! Our minds and our eyes need healthy breaks from all things with a screen.

After graduating from optometry school and returning home to New Orleans, Dr. Lauren Agnew saw an opportunity to fill a void in the market for concierge eyecare and luxury eyewear in the greater New Orleans area. Being the visionary that she is, she now operates a total of four locations of Eye Wares across the Northshore and Southshore.

With so much on her plate, Agnew admits that work-life balance is a constant challenge. “Thankfully, I am fortunate to have a very supportive family,” she says. “Having a strong female support group in the community also goes a long way. Being able to draw on the advice and comfort of fellow likeminded female entrepreneurs has been essential throughout this journey.”

The mother of two little boys, Agnew maintains a very busy life outside of work, spending time with her family. Currently, she is chairwoman for the local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society chapter, and Eye Wares participates in several fundraisers a year, including Sideline Pass and Dress for Success. “I like to participate in a range of charities to address the many, diverse needs of people and animals,” she says.

Being an entrepreneur herself, Agnew encourages others to take risks. “The ambitious dreams you ponder throughout life won’t happen on their own,” she says. “Often, success is not luck, but hard work and dedication. Sometimes it means taking a leap of faith and getting outside of your comfort zone. Just remember to tell yourself throughout the journey that you are investing in yourself, your community, and your family.”

Keep a gratitude journal. It’s important to remember your blessings before your shortcomings—this will keep you humble and also show you how far you’ve come.

Read and learn. Your mind is constantly reshaping itself, and in business, knowledge can be a secret weapon. Make Google work for you, read books to boost your business, and indulge in stories that inspire you or give you an escape.

Jennifer Linn’s love of animals runs soul-deep. Growing up on a cattle farm in the Mississippi countryside, she was surrounded by family and animals—a fact which ultimately influenced her pursuit of a career path that allowed her to focus on her twin passions. In 2010, she and her late husband, veterinary surgeon Robert Hancock, co-founded South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists, where the two worked sideby-side in treating patients until Hancock’s death in 2019.

Since then, Linn has continued the work she loves and also remarried. As a business owner, she has had to create balance that allows her growth in both the personal and professional facets of her life. “Maintaining a work-life harmony aligned with my personal values involves prioritizing family time,” she says. “The transition from

being a widow to remarriage has deepened this focus, bringing joy and a sense of completeness to both my personal and professional journey. The laughter-filled household with a newly blended family plays a pivotal role in achieving this balance.

“In the field of veterinary medicine, my commitment to continuous growth involves actively setting aside time for ongoing education, securing relevant certifications, and building valuable connections through networking,” she goes on. “Prioritizing a harmonious work-life balance means setting aside time for refreshing vacations, meaningful family time, and periodic breaks from social media. I also integrate valuable insights from my life coach, which not only contributes to my professional development but also enhances my overall well-being.”

WE: What do you miss most from your childhood?

JL: The family moments—the dinners together, camping, hunting, fishing, and vacations with my three sisters, mom and dad—are what I miss the most. As we grow older, I increasingly recognize the profound importance of the time spent together as a family.

WE: What superpower would you choose?

JL: I’d want the power to read minds because this would eliminate uncertainties and make understanding others more straightforward. I think it could be a valuable tool for effective communication and empathy.

WE: What can't you stop talking about?

JL: My wedding to Steve. Every detail, from the sheer beauty of the day to the joy shared by everyone, was nothing short of perfection. The moment I cherish the most is the pure emotion on his face as I walked down the aisle, and finding love again adds an extra layer of happiness to the story that I love to share.

While most little girls want to be ballerinas or veterinarians, Ariyal Fabre Lewis wanted to be in the courtroom. “I knew I wanted to be an attorney by the time I was four or five years old,” she says. “My mom and I used to watch Perry Mason, and it really inspired me.”

As hectic as the life of a lawyer typically is, Lewis manages it all and maintains a healthy work-life balance by making “to-do” lists and prioritizing the demands of her personal life and work responsibilities accordingly. Writing things down, in fact, is something that the attorney finds incredibly important to her, both personally and professionally. “I love writing down my visions and goals,” she says. “I believe that when I write things down and work towards it, it will come to pass—just as it says in Habakkuk 2:2. I also enjoy reading selfhelp books, which helps with my personal and professional growth.”

In her down time, Lewis is an avid cook and a self-described foodie who loves wining and dining with her husband. Additionally, she volunteers her time and talents with CASA and runs a nonprofit, Pearls of Power, Inc. (POP), a mentoring organization for preteen and teenaged girls.

Being both a busy mom and a businesswoman herself, working mainly with mothers and women through her event planning and design company, The Graceful Host, is an endeavor that speaks to Ashley Culicchia Cash’s heart. “I’m inspired by my clients, and I love to make people happy!” she says.

As the president of Syn Skin Aesthetics, Lizette Alvarado’s work revolves around enhancing and improving her clients’ lives through aesthetics and holistic care. “My mother, who was my heart and soul, was my inspiration for pursuing this path,” she says. “It's amazing to watch women metamorphosize as we help then reach their beauty goals.”

Alvarado credits the support of her family for helping her achieve—and maintain—a heathy work life balance, even when things get busy with her business. “In life, something has to give, and sometimes you have to find the solutions that will allow you to have that extra time with your family,” she notes.

Dr. Akers is now a diverse performer and educator with over 30 years of experience in the music industry and a versatile artist who redefines what it is to be a classically trained musician in the 21st Century. Following her passion for music, Dr. Akers has not only achieved her dream of becoming a professional violinist and vocalist but has also left an indelible mark on the industry, having sung on a Grammy-nominated jazz album, and performed live with Lauryn

MARY SCHEYD

ARN for five years by the time she enrolled in the nurse practitioner program, Mary Scheyd was pursing further development in her career as well as greater flexibility and autonomy. “It also gave me the ability to work more closely with patients in treating as well as preventing illness,” says Scheyd, who works in the St. Tammany Health System Cardiovascular Clinic in Covington.

In order to maintain her license and continue the trajectory of growth in her career, Scheyd completes 30 hours of continuing education related to her specific specialty each year. “I try to attend professional meetings and dinners, especially related to cardiology, and aim to keep up to date with current guidelines,” she says. “My patients deserve the best care possible, and this enables me to give it to them.”

Healthy work/life balance for Scheyd comes down to focus: “When I’m at work, I focus on patients’ health outcomes,” she says. “At home, I focus on caring for my family.”

During her down time, Scheyd enjoys fishing, crabbing, boating, paddle boarding, and taking advantage of living near the water in as many ways as possible—and gives back in ways that help celebrate and preserve coastal living, including volunteering for the Madisonville Boat Festival each year, holding active membership of the Lighthouse Museum, and supporting both the museum as well as preservation of the lighthouse.

In support of others who share the same dream of becoming nurse practitioners, Scheyd has precepted many nurse practitioner students and continuously promotes the careers of other nurse practitioners in the local community.

In her work at the St. Tammany Health System Cardiovascular Clinic in Covington , Nicole Sesser gets to see a different side of medicine than she did as an OR nurse. “I thoroughly enjoyed being in the operating room, although I was always left to wonder if the care I provided truly made a meaningful impact on their recovery and overall quality of life,” she says. “In my current role, I am able to follow the patient through the entirety of their treatment course, which is truly fulfilling. I truly enjoy being able to help our clients feel better and improve their overall quality of life.”

To better her career, Sesser attends relevant conferences and continuing education courses as often as possible. To further her own personal growth, she occasionally likes to challenge herself by trying something new. “I decided to try yoga a few years ago, and, surprisingly, I loved it!”

Sesser spends time with her husband and two children by taking taekwondo as a family. “It’s so much fun and also a great workout,” she says. “With my work, it’s not always easy to maintain work-life harmony, but I try to organize my week in a way that allows me to be fully present in each aspect of my life.”

To others looking to find their career path, she says, “Take the leap. Be open to new and emerging concepts, while also standing firm in your beliefs. Be your best advocate.”

When she chose her area of practice, Dr. Lucia Sicinschi decided to pursue internal medicine because of her passion for treating complex medical conditions and her desire to provide comprehensive care to adult patients. “I also enjoy the diversity of cases and the opportunity to develop long-term relationships with my patients,” she says.

Working at the St. Tammany Physician’s Network - Covington Clinic, Dr. Sicinschi is given the opportunity to follow those passions and interests, and she stays on top of advances in her field by attending conferences, workshops, and seminars as well as participating in online courses and engaging in self-directed learning to enhance her knowledge and skills.

Being busy is a natural consequence of the medical profession, but Dr. Sicinschi prioritizes self-care and sets boundaries to maintain a healthy work-life balance. “I schedule regular breaks, exercise, and spend quality time with my family and friends,” she says. “This helps me recharge and stay connected to my personal values and goals, so that I can be mentally and physically healthier as an individual and also better serve my patients.

Outside of work, Dr. Sicinschi enjoys hiking, reading, and listening to music and podcasts. “These activities help me relax, rejuvenate, and stay inspired,” she says. She also engages in regular mindfulness and meditation practices to promote mental and emotional well-being.

To aspiring women in medicine, Dr. Sicinschi advises “cultivating resilience, seeking mentorship and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth in their career paths. To be successful, it’s very important to prioritize self-care and personal well-being.”

Growing up, Dr. Kaitlin Massey watched her grandfather practice medicine in Houma, Louisiana. “He provided the most compassionate care that any patient could ask for,” she recalls. “He passed away when I was eight, but I was lucky enough to rotate with my great uncle for my family medicine rotation in medical school. I got to see the exceptional care he provided to patients of all ages, from newborn to geriatrics, and hear stories from many patients that knew my grandfather. The stories of how

he touched the lives of each and every patient he encountered were inspiring. I knew after that rotation that I wanted to follow in his footsteps and provide the best possible primary care to my community that I could.”

Now working with St. Tammany Health System, she is fulfilling that goal every day. “I constantly strive to be the best physician I can be,” she says. “I’m always pushing myself to learn new skills, stepping out of my comfort zone and learning from my colleagues and the other physicians and staff around me.”

As she looks to upcoming generations of women aspiring to become doctors or equally demanding careers, she says, “find something you’re passionate about and give it your all. For other working moms—not only can you do them both, but you can be great at them both! There is no harder worker than a mom! It’s also important to build your support system and let those people help you when you need it.”

As a child/adolescent psychiatric nurse practitioner and owner at Pontchartrain Psychological Associates, Janey Gaston is doing exactly what she’s always felt called to do: “I wanted to heal the hearts and minds of people—especially children,” she says. “As far as opening my own practice, I wanted to be able to care for my patients my way.”

Gaston is a member of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Professional Women of St. Tammany and sits on the scholarship committee for the Louisiana Nurse Practitioner Foundation. “There is nothing more gratifying than assisting the next generation of nurses and nurse practitioners in their educational journey,” she notes. “Their whole career is ahead of them—and in these early days, I’d offer them some advice that I wish I’d known. Give yourself some grace. Not everything can be accomplished today, and some things need to come in their own time. Trust yourself and listen to your gut. It will all work out.”

Naturally, maintaining a work-life harmony and sense of balance can be particularly challenging in Gaston’s line of work. “I never want my patients to feel alone,” she says, “but I also think setting good boundaries about my time availability is important. This seems to help me achieve balance. Also, realizing my own limitations and accepting them has been key. I’ve also had to learn to accept that I am human and that I need rest and a personal life as well as my professional life. It’s been worth the learning to get to this more balanced place in life.”

JUGGLING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND LIFE

The Oxford dictionary defines an entrepreneur as “a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so.”

While that definition may be true, what it doesn’t say is that being an entrepreneur comes with a struggle to balance life with work—a balancing act that can become extremely precarious and lead to burn out.

But let’s look at the brighter side here: you may feel like you’re a clown juggling a thousand things that defy gravity and really shouldn’t be possible for one person to handle on their own, but there is a way to keep all of it in the air. The trick to learn is to give yourself the time you need to step away from work and switch off your “work brain,” which will allow you to focus on your mindset and wellbeing and give you the space to spend time with your family.

It will also bring you more focus during your work hours.

For many women in the entrepreneurial space, they are having to fit in all the facets of life: business owner, wife, and mother. These all require time, effort, and focus, and it can feel overwhelming under the pressures of what you “should” do. The hard truth of it is that business ownership comes with rigorous demands, and while entrepreneurs often start their own business in order to have a better work/life balance, that initial goal gets buried as every available hour is spent working on the business to make it successful.

You’re not alone in this, but you can “unbury” that core reason for going out on your own and reclaim your passion for your work at the same time as you reconnect with yourself and your family.

Take time to consider what is important to you, both personally and professionally—i.e., your passions and goals, your vision for your business, your family, and yourself. Work out what’s most vital to you, your happiness, and your success, and then map out how you want to manage the hours in your day.

Does your business require that you personally complete every task, or can some of them be given to others who may handle them just as well while you focus on the bigger picture? Delegating these things will allow you more personal time to be with your family and recharge, recuperate, and strengthen your mental health, which also strengthens your business.

Turn off from work and set boundaries for yourself by creating a mental and physical end to your workday and shutting down all work-related activities at a set time each day. Telling clients that you are finished by a certain time shows them that your time is valuable, and your clients will value the time that you do give them even more.

When you have set times for work, family time can be worked in around this. Share times that you are available with them, so that they can respect your working hours and you won’t feel the pull between work and family. These times for personal care and family are just as important as client meetings are to your business.

Over the last ten years, Megan Helwick has built a successful career for herself in real estate, relying on her gift for sales and her own qualities of personality as well as her knowledge of the market, expertise, and dedication to her clients.

ENTREPRENEURS REDEFINING BUSINESS ATTIRE

With the change in the business landscape over the last decade, women have taken over more and more of the top positions that were once solely occupied by men, shattering the glass ceiling and leaving the shards scattered like so much confetti. And outside the corporate world, the trend continues, with women-owned businesses on the rise and the number of female entrepreneurs increasing.

So what does all of that mean for business attire?

If you’ve ever watched Working Girl, you know that being a boss used to mean pantsuits and shoulder pads—i.e., dressing to impress and intimidate. But with the relaxed atmosphere of so many businesses—even global titans like Google, where playing with Lego bricks and taking regular naps are sanctioned activities—having to be buttoned up & ironed to the point of razor-sharp creases has gone the way of the dodo bird. Instead, company culture dictates dress code…or lack thereof.

Still, there is a balance to be struck between looking like you just rolled out of bed (no offense, MZ) and looking as though you’re on your way to a State funeral. You can be casual yet polished, which is a great place to land when you’re in a position to command respect, want to make a good first impression and need to communicate confidence in your brand.

Whether you’re a one-woman show or have employees, there are still times when the “HR-friendly” attire is necessary. One that immediately springs to mind is a client meeting or pitch lunch. For such cases as these, lean towards classic silhouettes that convey attention to detail and respect for the occasion, in fun colors that keep you from looking as though you’re trying too hard. For more casual times, well-cut jeans and even trouserinspired “yoga” pants are in high rotation as work wear, taking comfort more into account than the need for formality.

Thanks to the many, many women who now call the shots, heels are no longer a necessary evil of work-appropriate footwear. But. If they’re part of your image, then by all means, wear them. If yours is a company whose messaging is more on the casual or edgy side, however, the world of footwear is your oyster—so long as it’s on-brand. You, as the boss, are the definer of what you want to convey, and people will look at what you put on your feet. Show your personality in some small way—it will make you memorable.

At the end of the day, there is no “should” or “shouldn’t” in work wear, aside from the rule of looking well put together and intentional in your dressing. Ask yourself this: What do people see when they look at you? Does your look embody the essence of your brand, and do you wear it with confidence, capability and pride?

The daughter of a mother who is a dentist, Dr. Daniela Eversgerd has been around dentistry her entire life. “I always saw how much she enjoyed her work and changing her patients’ lives,” she says. “She is truly my inspiration.”

As much as she loves her work, Dr. Eversgerd relies on the support of her team at Allure Dental as well as that of her family to help her attain the successful career she has, at the same time as raising her children. She is a firm believer in constant personal and professional growth and puts that belief into practice. “I’m always looking to keep up with new technology and techniques to improve my patients’ experience with me and ensure excellence in the care they receive at my office,” she says.

WE: What can’t you stop talking about?

DE: Teeth! I’m obsessed with teeth. Once you get me going, watch out!

WE: What is the best gift you have ever received?

DE: My three children. They are truly gifts from God!

WE: Where would you go if you knew you might get stuck there for a year?

When Jessica Bosch co-founded Restore Health & Wellness, the goal was simple: “We wanted to create something to help people become healthier and more confident, in a comfortable, nonjudgmental setting,” she says. “I have struggled with self-confidence my entire life and also know how hard it can be to ask for help. It’s so rewarding to see our patients happy and healthy, living their best life.”

To better serve her patients and ensure professional development that furthers the efficacy of what she offers, Bosch frequently participates in classes and other educational opportunities and conferences. She also stays engaged with other like-minded providers to stay informed of latest practice guidelines as well as patient experiences.

Being in the business of health, Bosch tries to keep a healthy balance between life and work but admits it can be a challenge. “I have always ‘worked and played hard,’ but having a business has made that tough at times,” she says. “I’ve learned that being disciplined and setting boundaries in my work and my personal life is so important to maintain this harmony. Some days I’m better at this than others!”

To other women in business, she says, “The best piece of advice I can offer is to keep going, one day at a time. Grace Johnson grew up in the estate jewelry business, so becoming a gemologist herself and marrying into a family that was also steeped in the industry was a fit as natural as a perfectly sized ring. “At 17, I studied with staff members of Sotheby’s at the University of Maine in Orono, and that solidified my decision to enroll at Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Santa Monica, CA,” she says. “That is where I met my husband, Scott, whose father was in the diamond wholesale and jewelry manufacturing business here in New Orleans.”

Johnson Diamond Jewelers is now a family affair, with Johnson’s eldest son running day to day operations and pursuing his graduate gemologist degree from GIA—a fact which allows her to spend more time with her grandchildren. “Family is everything to me, and I am thankful God has given me the opportunity to have my children live close and continue our family legacy in the jewelry business,” she says.

As a teacher, imparting knowledge to others is something that comes naturally to Betsy Garrety. Over the last 32 years, she has worked to give her students the best possible education—and her own desire for self-improvement is one that motivated her to lose more than 100 pounds. “Because of my journey, I just want to teach people about the connection between nutrition and health,” says the owner of Handle Your Business. “I have lived this struggle for my entire life, so people find me very relatable.”

To that end, she is transitioning from the classroom to teaching individuals about the connection between nutrition and their mental, emotional, and physical health. “I want to teach people how to get healthy using real foods,” she says. “You can live your best Louisiana life and still reach your health goals.”

To stay on track with her own goals, Garrety creates a schedule that includes meal prep time and dedicated times to work out. “Those two things are a priority for me because I have learned that those are the things that keep you well,” she says. “If you’re dealing with an illness, you are consumed with trying to get well and not really living life. I would rather make sure I stay well so that I can live the fullest life possible.”

Garrety’s schedule is a busy one, as she meets with her health coach weekly and attends classes with Haylie Pomroy, a New York Times best-selling author on wellness and nutrition. KARMYNAH HELAIRE MD

The daughter of parents who drove medical transport, Dr. Karmynah Helaire’s decision to become a physician could almost be considered fated. “The experience exposed me to a sense of community, patients in rural areas with limited resources, different medical conditions, and hospitals,” she says.

Dr. Helaire was faced with the realities of mortality and morbidity at an early age, when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and her father with tardive dyskinesia by the age of ten. Despite those challenges, her parents exposed her to community service

and volunteering in her local rural area through their works as community leaders advocating for equality and equity.

In her work with St. Tammany Health System at the St. Tammany Physician’s Network Folsom Clinic, she has plans to further her professional growth and better served the community through an obesity fellowship and involvement in STHS preventative health initiatives as a committee member. “Both highlight my commitment to preventative health, obesity related conditions, early intervention, promoting patient health, wellness and education, as well as collaborating with local community leaders and members to enhance healthier lifestyles within the local area,” she says.

As a mentor or role model for other women in business trying to navigate a difficult career path, Dr. Helaire would emphasize this: “You are enough! Set small goals, plan downtime, set an example for others and be resourceful. It’s important to have an attitude and outlook that promotes resilience and success. Lastly, setbacks, shortfalls and ‘failures’ are healthy for personal growth—always keep going.”

Sarah Bourgeois started her career working on the telemetry floor at EJGH before moving to the cardiac catheterization lab at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where she realized that she’d found her calling. Now a nurse practitioner at the St. Tammany Cardiovascular Clinic in Covington, she’s balancing a full workload with raising two young children. “I do my best to leave work at work and spend one-on-one time with my family when I’m home,” she says. “I constantly remind myself how fast my kids are growing, so I try to be present with them. I’m blessed to be able to drop them off in the mornings, so we get to have special one-on-one moments. I love this about my job.”

To stay on top of the changes that so swiftly come in the medical profession, Bourgeois believes in the need for continuing education. “I always take a moment to educate myself if I’m not sure about something,” she says. “I also try to be humble and open to learning something new every day, whether it is as a nurse practitioner or a mother to two littles.”

Having been through the challenges of entering a career field as fast paced and demanding as nursing, Bourgeois has some advice for others pursuing similarly taxing career paths. “Remember there is time for work and time for family,” she says. “Make sure to fill both of those cups equally to stay balanced. Also always take a moment to fill your own cup so that you don’t neglect yourself.”

Passionate in her pursuit of medicine, Molly Peck spent years as a nurse before deciding to further her career by attending graduate school and becoming a nurse practitioner at St. Tammany Health System Cardiovascular Clinic in Covington. “As a nurse practitioner, I have the knowledge and experience necessary to provide for patients in my community,” she says.

Peck understands the need for continuous personal development and, to that end, sets small monthly goals for herself. “At the end of each month, I reassess my progress towards or attainment of these

goals and also reflect on what each goal means to me,” she says. “I ensure continuous professional development through staying upto-date on the latest practice recommendations and making sure to attend both online and in-person continuing education offerings.”

Offering her own experience, she says, “As anyone pursues a career path, they should always ensure their passion for the career they have chosen and then take time to advance their knowledge regarding that career. It’s crucial to stay informed on practice changes within their field and ensure that they are evolving with best practice recommendations. Developing a network of colleagues who are in the same career field can also help broaden their knowledge and build professional relationships.”

Peck strives to achieve work-life harmony by making sure to stay on task at work while also allowing for flexibility to meet the needs her patients. “I also make sure my work is done for the day prior to leaving,” she says. “This allows me to focus on my personal life once I’m home.”

120 YEARS of EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN

PICTURE THIS: The year is 1878, and four Benedictine nuns board a steamer ship in New Orleans bound for Covington. Their idea is to establish a convent and school on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, but due to lack of funding, the dream is dashed, and the nuns return to their home convent in New Orleans. Undeterred by this setback, the Benedictine sisters remember their goal when, twelve years later, their community outgrows their south shore home. By this time, monies to build a new convent and an academy for girls are available, and the determined Benedictines once again cross Lake Pontchartrain, this time to stay.

This tenacity of spirit was at the core of St. Scholastica’s life: “Do more, love more.” If it were not for the Benedictine sisters’ willingness to do more and love more for the sake of their future

students, SSA would have remained simply a dream.

Since 1903, St. Scholastica Academy’s success in educating young women in the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, study, and community is unparalleled. As the timeline below attests, the Academy has grown in many areas: the number of buildings, student enrollment, technological advancements, and national recognition. Yet, the most essential measure of growth lies in the achievements of its graduates.

One of St. Scholastica Academy’s goals is to develop leadership abilities in its students, administrators, faculty, and staff. In 1952, SSA led the South by becoming the first school to integrate “tape teaching.” In 1957, this significant technological advancement was

It is built at a cost of $17,750 and is the most impressive structure in Covington. Angelus Bell rings for the first time and still rings daily. featured in many national publications, including Life Magazine and The New York Times. But this was only the beginning! Due to the national recognition, educators from all over the country visited SSA to learn how to use tape teaching and audio labs in their own classrooms.

Today, St. Scholastica provides ample opportunities for students to learn and hone leadership skills as student ministry small group leaders, retreat facilitators, class officers, team captains, club officers, open house tour guides, and student council executive board officers. The school’s teachers attend regular professional development workshops to remain on the leading edge of technological and pedagogical advancements. Administrators participate in local, regional, and national discussions about how to lead and serve their students and faculty best.

The relationship between the Academy and St. Paul’s College continues to grow since its origin in 1911.

The school year opens on Sept. 5, with 105 students. Planning for the addition of Our Lady of Wisdom Hall creating the first school in the South equipped for tape teaching.

Perhaps the truest measure of leadership is in serving others. After Hurricane Katrina, SSA helped many families return to their former quality of life while welcoming displaced students from other schools. In 2021, Hurricane Ida brought its own challenges, but the SSA faculty and students used the time “off” of school to bring hope to the hardest-hit areas in Covington. Meals and encouragement were offered to residents of SSA’s vicinity who had no electricity or means of transportation to buy basic necessities. Using funds donated by SSA faculty and families, a school bus was packed to the brim with cleaning supplies, water, food, and other items and brought to St. Charles Catholic in Laplace, our brothers and sisters in Catholic education.

This school year begins with the closing of the elementary school section. The faculty consists of six nuns and six lay teachers for the 198 students.

The original building, built in 1903, is torn down when the Covington Fire Department declares the building unsafe.

Apple computers arrive on campus and a lab dedicated to this new technology.

SSA purchases properties for a 2-story classroom building & development office. A science & computer facility is christened Benedictine Hall.

During every school year, students are required to serve in their community. The goal of required service hours is that the girls realize how important it is to meet the needs of others, so much so that serving becomes a natural part of their identity as adults. Currently, SSA partners with Northshore Community Foundation and its 50+ non-profit organizations to facilitate service opportunities in our local community.

St. Scholastica Academy is also an academic leader, offering rigorous courses and individualized learning opportunities. Students can earn many college credits by enrolling in dual enrollment and advanced placement classes, and its STEM program graduates future engineers, doctors, nurses, analysts, computer programmers, and more. Alums often remark that they felt extremely prepared for success upon entering various universities. SSA’s ACT scores consistently outrank both local and national scores. In recognition of the school’s tradition of academic superiority, the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award by the United States Department of Education has been awarded to St. Scholastica Academy twice, not an easy feat!

Athletics is also a time-honored component of SSA’s aim to form well-rounded young women. In 2001, a ten-acre property was purchased, becoming the first all-girls athletic complex in the state. A master plan has been developed, and the Academy is currently raising funds and offering community partnerships to accommodate a much-needed renovation. With generous support from the community, this complex is slated to become a state-of-the-art facility for sports and other events, fostering students’ physical and emotional well-being.

The core mission of St. Scholastica Academy is, and always has been, rooting young women in faith. This year’s Benedictine theme is “Prefer nothing whatsoever to the love of Christ.” Weekly Mass and reconciliation, class retreats, small ministry groups, Lord’s Day, monthly whole-school Mass, service opportunities, theology classes, and chapel visits are integral to building the young church. Christ’s love is truly at the heart of this amazing community.

The sisterhood of faith that binds past and present students is palpable and unique. St. Scholastica Academy rejoices in 120 years of educating young women in the Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, study, and community as it continues to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future, all while “doing more and loving more.” St. Scholastica, our home you’ll always be!

Education has changed a great deal since Kathy LeBlanc and her husband opened Cedarwood School in August of 1983. As educators with children of their own, the venture was as much a personal decision as a professional one, and it has benefited the children of the Northshore for the last 40 years. “I couldn’t be more satisfied and prouder of what we’ve accomplished and how many children we’ve given the gift of lifelong learning,” says LeBlanc.

Despite the responsibilities of being the president of a school, LeBlanc finds that finding balance isn’t a struggle for her. “Fortunately, I thrive by being at work and working in the environment we’ve created at Cedarwood,” she contends. “The children bring such joy to school every day, so when I’m having a rocky day, I just walk the campus, visit classrooms, and talk to the students. Through their eyes and conversation, I am grounded by seeing my vision and goals come alive. It’s an incredibly moving experience to see, up close, how one person’s work can positively affect so many. Personally, I’ve learned to dedicate time to myself and for my family. Spending time with our grandchildren, trips to the beach, and spending time with close friends is the reward.”

LeBlanc’s passion for her community and making a social impact is seen through her work at Cedarwood as well as some other projects in which she’s had a hand over the years—specifically the Cedarwood Children’s Foundation.

WE: Would you rather travel to the past or the future?

KL: That’s not an easy question. I believe our past molds us to create our future, so I relish my past because it has brought me to where I am today. But I am a futuristic thinker, so I always dream about what the future will bring and how I can create it.

WE: Where would you go if you knew you might get stuck there for a year?

KL: Italy! It has all the things I enjoy: cooking, healthy living, wine, and history!

WE: What famous person do you most want to meet in person and why?

KL: Jackie Kennedy. She was a gracious, intelligent, and incredibly strong woman who faced unimaginable challenges and tragedies during her life with courage, style, and grace. I’ve always admired her strength and tenacity.

ALYESE BLACK

Brands crave exposure. People crave experiences. Alyese Black, the visionary and CEO behind GEAUX Experiential, created a way to do both, better, against all odds.

“We partner with companies that want their brands on sampling tours, hosting VIP events, activating at festivals and arenas, where their sponsorships garner attention that goes beyond traditional advertising,” explains Black. “The huge agencies focused on revenue, not relationships. When the pandemic hit, I knew we had the secret to creating a better agency model.”

That secret: partnership. “I dreamed of building a business with my husband for 20 years because of our complimentary skills--he’s operations/logistics, and I’m sales/marketing. It just made sense, and at the time, we had everything to gain,” says Black. “In 2020, two weeks before the world shut down, we launched GEAUX Experiential, believing that our magic was exactly what the industry needed, even though we couldn’t do events back then. Four years later, we were right. GEAUX has been creating big experiences, for big brands, at big events, all over the country ever since.”

The same secret applies when it comes to Black’s role of mother to four kids under 12. “Harmony is the goal, but not always the reality!” she admits. “The most valuable asset we have is authenticity—being honest about our strengths and challenges. I’ve wholly embraced that, realizing delegation is paramount. As powerful women, we often, singlehandedly attempt to take on the world. But I’ve discovered that the real superpower to success is owning your scope of genius, while allowing someone else to shine in theirs, actually yields more return than if we ventured it alone. It’s just magic.”

WE: What's the last thing you read?

AB: This is at least the third time I’ve read this, but Atomic Habits by James Clear. If you need a nudge to see what even a one percent change can do, you must read this book.

WE: What famous person do you most want to meet in person and why?

AB: Sara Blakely. She singlehandedly bulldogged the century-old shape-wear industry into finding a better solution and succeeded. The way she ran SPANX has been a model for my business and my message to entrepreneurial female founders.

In her work as founder and chief strategist for an eponymous full-service strategic communications firm, Jolie Bernard has shown herself to be a results-driven collaborator with proven success in building strong and sustainable relationships between stakeholders, executives, organizations, and communities regionally, nationally, and globally while prioritizing effective communications and business development for the firm’s clients. Being an entrepreneur herself, Bernard understands the value of having a guiding hand in finding success—and how much of a leap of faith it takes to start a business.

“I became an accidental entrepreneur in June of 2010 after having to make a choice regarding my television news career overnight,” says Bernard of what led her to launch The Bernard Group. “I haven’t looked back.”

In addition to her business, Bernard is also a non-profit founder and leader. Along with service to her own youth-serving nonprofits, she serves as the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors for the New Orleans Regional Black Chamber of Commerce and the PRSA New Orleans Chapter Treasurer of the Board of Directors. She is a member of the Boards of Directors for the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, CROWN ME Foundation, Sunny with a Chance of Love, and Just One Voice. She is also a proud member of the Super Bowl LIX Supplier Diversity Committee. Says Bernard, “I am very much looking forward to bringing opportunities to Black business owners throughout the Greater New Orleans Region when the Super Bowl comes to the Big Easy in 2025.”

WE: Would you rather travel to the past or the future?

JB: The past so I could better prepare little Jolie for her future. Hindsight and perspective are incredibly powerful when you just sit with it.

WE: As a mentor or role model for other women in business, what advice do you offer to help them navigate their own career paths?

JB: Be diligent and intentional about turning someone’s no into your yes. There’s always a way to get through a wall. If you can’t hop over it, get around it—never stop in front of it and do nothing.

As someone whose career has been built around styling the women of New Orleans for more than 20 years, Jenny Carr has kept her finger on the pulse of fashion for decades—and that passion has evolved into something with a nationwide reach. Owner of the Covington based boutique The Next, Carr has created a website offering wardrobe essentials as well as one-on-one stylist services to clients in NY, Dallas, and of course, New Orleans where Carr was born and raised.

“I’ve loved fashion since childhood, and I’ve worked in either the clothing industry or interior design in some capacity since my early twenties. I have a lot of loyal clients and friends I work with that I’m grateful for,” she says. “As far as my latest business venture, I saw there was a market on the Northshore that was completely untapped and knew that The Next would fill that void.”

The fashion world is constantly changing, keeping Carr busy with the many challenges it brings as a small business owner. Maintaining her work-life harmony lies in the fact that “work is what I do, as well as what I love to do, but it is not who I am,” she contends. That said, I am a stylist to many of my friends, I have been for years, and I truly love it when those two aspects of my life intersect.

“When it comes to dressing women, I hope to help give them confidence in wardrobe building and having fun in the process. That may be styling them in-store, working in their homes for a closet refresh, or helping them pack for extended trips. In most cases some combination of the three. If I can help, then I feel I'm doing what I set out to do.”

A/QWE: What’s the last thing you read?

JC: Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach

WE: What is the best gift you’ve ever received?

JC: That’s a tie. One is a letter my brother wrote me about 15 years ago. The other is the last Christmas present I received from my boyfriend—he continues to keep me in awe of his thoughtfulness. He spoils me, too.

CHAZZIE WILLIAMS

Chazzie Williams uses her personal experience and health journey in her work as the owner of Healthy Portions. “God gave me a dream to help others and love them,” she says. “I’ve had weight loss challenges of my own, so I can relate to what my clients are going through.”

Having gone through a double mastectomy and five surgeries following a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in 2021, Williams feels keenly the importance of maintaining a healthy, fulfilling balance between work, family, and selfcare. In order to keep her own personal growth on track, she surrounds herself with like-minded individuals who are also striving to become the best versions of themselves. “I obtain wisdom from watching and learning from those who are winning in the areas of life that I need wisdom,” she says.

When she finds herself feeling stagnant in her business growth, she has some very unique methods of shaking herself loose. “I book a photo shoot,” she says. “I look at them and remind myself of where I’ve come from and where God has led me and is continuing to lead me. It’s very inspiring and amazing how seeing myself in a picture brings perspective, especially in the moments when I, as a business owner, feel defeated. We all feel defeated from time to time after all, we are human. It reminds me of the dream God gave me to start Healthy Portions and why He gave it to me. I have been on a journey that I can share with others and help them change their own lives and health for the better.”

QWE: What's the last thing you read?

CW: You Are a Prize to Be Won by Wendy Griffith. It’s a great reminder that we are created for greatness and that God has a beautiful life for you.

WE: What can't you stop talking about?

CW: The next dream God has given me, which will be one that my two daughters and I walk together.

WE: What is the best gift you've ever received?

CW: My faith and finding my purpose, learning who and what I was created to be.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in advocating for women's rights or empowerment?

Desiree Allums impacting women

As the founder of EmpowerHer Life (formerly Women Empowering Women Northshore), I've established a welcoming community committed to providing a secure haven for women pursuing self-acceptance, selfexpression, and personal/professional growth. In this inclusive space, every woman is empowered to share her unique story and embark on a transformative journey. My dedication is rooted in contributing to a global vision where each woman has the chance to thrive and realize her full potential by forming relationships with other like minded-women in order to propel her life.

What inspired you to become involved in initiatives that impact women positively?

Last year, I faced a challenging situation where I, as an adult, experienced bullying, emotional brutality, and mean-spirited behavior from several women who targeted me. They went to great lengths, coordinating actions to turn others against me, fueled by their desire to dim my light. Initially, I let it affect me, but with the incredible support of God, my husband, my family, and my girlfriends, I soon remembered my worth. Opening up about my personal journey with others unveiled a common thread among women who had undergone similar experiences. This led me to feel a sense of purpose, prompting the creation of a supportive group that encourages mutual upliftment, celebrates each other's achievements, and stands by one another during both joyous and challenging times.

Can you share a specific example of a challenge you or the women you work with have encountered and how it was overcome?

We encountered a challenge with the limited brand awareness for small women-owned businesses in the community. To overcome this, we hosted monthly mix and mingle events showcasing their products and services. These events aimed not only to promote the companies to the community of women we serve but also to connect the woman behind each brand with our audience. A focused social media campaign highlighted their stories and offerings, generating

significant online engagement. Partnering with our organization provided them valuable coverage, and fostering collaboration with other businesses strengthened community connections. In return, brand visibility surged, resulting in heightened support and patronage for these women entrepreneurs.

Can you highlight some of the projects or initiatives you have been involved in that have made a significant impact on women's lives?

We've made a profound impact on women's lives through our monthly service projects with various nonprofits, addressing diverse needs within the community. Additionally, our commitment to empowering women extends to our monthly meetings where we provide keynote speakers who share invaluable insights and inspiration. These speakers contribute to the personal and professional growth of our members. To foster camaraderie, we organize social events that offer a more relaxed setting, providing members with opportunities to connect and have fun. Through this holistic approach, we've created a supportive and enriching environment that positively influences the lives of the women we serve.

Who are your role models in the field of women's empowerment, and how have they influenced your work?

Brene Brown stands out as my role model in this industry. Her teachings have illuminated the profound beauty and strength derived from embracing complete vulnerability. Through her wisdom, I've learned that the darkest chapters in our stories don't dictate our endings; it's permissible to turn the page and believe in new beginnings. Brown instilled in me the understanding that my uniqueness is a superpower, urging me to share my light with other women so they too can embrace their authentic selves.

How important is community engagement in advancing the cause of women's empowerment, and what role do grassroots initiatives play in this regard?

Community engagement is critical for advancing women's empowerment as it fosters collaboration and addresses local challenges. Grassroots initiatives play a key role by directly involving communities, tailoring solutions to specific needs, building trust, and creating sustainable, locally-driven change. These initiatives empower local leaders and ensure a more inclusive and representative approach to women's empowerment efforts.

As someone who has always had a passion for the vet industry and caring for dogs, the decision to become a Camp Bow Wow franchisee seemed a logical one for Scarlett Dalton and her husband, Jason. “This seemed like a great business step, with the added benefit of being on the fun side of caring for people’s pets,” says Dalton of the company, which offers such services as boarding, training, grooming, and day care.

As passionate as she is about her work, Dalton doesn’t consider it “work” in the strict sense of the word. “I love what I do, and I have the luxury of doing it all with my husband and youngest son,” she says. “We take time when possible and spend it together any chance we get, but our business is what allows us the luxury of taking and enjoying nice family trips as well as having time together.”

To continue her professional development, Dalton stays actively engaged with her fellow franchisees to discuss all aspects of the brand, including helping new franchisees just starting out in the industry. “We attend multiple events on franchising and the pet care industry every year, and this past year, we attended the IFA (International Franchise Association), MUFC (Multi-Unit Franchising Conference) and the Pet Care Expo,” she explains. “We won Franchisee of the Year at the IFA as well as the Husband-and-Wife Influencer of the Year award at the MUFC, which was great recognition of our professional development and dedication to our brand and industry.”

Like many entrepreneurs, Lauren Zito was filling a void in the market when she and her husband started Zitos A/C & Heating. “I saw the need for a trustworthy AC and heating service in the area,” she says. “Prior to starting the company, people would always call and ask my husband his professional opinion because they felt they weren’t getting a fair deal from other companies.”

Zito prides herself on being a planner—a fact which has served her well in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “Planning ahead is huge,” she maintains. “I am extremely schedule oriented. My rule of thumb is that if it’s not on the calendar, it’s not happening. My husband and I create a work balance that aligns with our two children’s schedules and obligations as well as our work schedule. He handles a lot of the front-line, day-to-day tasks while I work behind the scenes without sacrificing our family values.”

To other entrepreneurial hopefuls, Zito would advise “having your values at home align with the values in your workplace,” she says. “I pride myself on being a family-owned business, and I want those values to be carried to our customers. We never bite off more than we can chew and are upfront and honest with our customers. If 100 percent can’t be given to a particular project and our workload can’t handle the demand, we communicate that to the customer and will refer them to someone that can give them what we can’t. ‘A good name is more desirable than GREAT riches.’”

LZ: I would rather travel to the future. Being the planner and detailed oriented person that I am, I want to know what’s next!

WE: What is the best gift you've ever received?

LZ: A babysitter for an adult night out. Communication and downtime with your spouse are key in owning a growing business.

WE: What do you miss most from your childhood?

LZ: Simplicity. And not having to cook, clean, and take care of all the things. Thanks, Mom!

EUGENIA LUBRANO-GANGI

As someone who has always had a passion for marketing, Eugenia Lubrano-Gangi is a born natural in her work for the real estate industry. “My decision to enter marketing was cultivated during college as well as the entrepreneurial environment I grew up in with my parents owning a business,” she says. “After working in corporate marketing and later as a real estate agent, I saw a need for dedicated marketing support in the real estate industry, prompting me to start a real estate marketing company to assist other real estate agents.

Now the president and founder of NOLA Real Estate Marketing & Photography, Lubrano-Gangi has a great deal on her plate on any given day—which means that finding balance is often a challenge. “I wouldn't claim to have work and life perfectly balanced,” she admits. “Sacrifices of personal and family time are inevitable, but I strive to prioritize the aspects of life that hold the most significance and aim for a fulfilling life.”

Both personal and professional growth are important to the entrepreneur, and so she makes it a practice to set annual goals across different aspects of her life. “Whether they are small or significant, I envision an aspirational version of myself, identifying the necessary steps to reach that vision,” Lubrano-Gangi explains. “The key is to stay focused on the day-to-day tasks, ensuring consistent progress toward achieving those goals. Outside of work, I recharge and stay inspired by seeking out the beauty in everyday things.”

WE: What's the last thing you read?

ELG: From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks. The books talks about an important shift that must happen in a person's career as we switch from fluid to crystalized intelligence. It was particularly interesting in this season of life.

WE: Would you rather travel to the past or the future?

ELG: The future. The anticipation of what lies ahead excites me, and I believe there are incredible possibilities waiting to unfold.

WE: Where would you go if you knew you might get stuck there for a year?

ELG: Some place with crystal-clear blue waters and those charming huts right on the water. The serene and timeless beauty of that scene is something I believe would never lose its appeal.
