Relax in the summer paradise of Kaunissaari

visitkotkahamina.fi/en/kaunissaari/ 8

Make the most of the summer on Kaunissaari. Since the 1950s, the summer paradise of Pyhtää Kaunissaari has attracted sun worshipers and sea adventurers looking to enjoy the island atmosphere. Its long sandy beaches, peaceful pine trees and picturesque fishing villages will charm all visitors.

Enjoy the legendary fish soup for lunch at restaurant Kaunissaaren Maja, hike in the island’s wonderful nature, dip from the warm sandy beaches into the sparkling sea and take the chance to listen to top artists in Cafe Mustikka at Kaunissaaren Lomamökit (holiday cottages). In both places, you can fill your stomach and stay in comfort overnight. If you’re still up for singing, at Maja’s karaoke night you can set

your inner artist free in the sweet seascapes of the Finnish summer. The busiest time on the island is in the summer months, but if you come in May or September, you can easily find a quiet jetty for some island atmosphere, and you might even get to watch the local storks and otters frolicking. It is worth booking accommodation for several nights at once, because the charm of Kaunissaari is irresistible.

You can go to Kaunissaari from the Kotka Kuusinen harbour by ferry all year around or from Kotka Sapokka by taxi boat or by locally run cruises. In addition, the traditional sailing ship Österstjernan sails to Kaunissaari from the Loviisa Laivasilta area.

Discover Haapasaari - in the middle of the sea

Disembark onto the double horseshoe-shaped island of fur seals, maritime surveillance and harbour pilots in the sheltered natural harbour of Kylänlahti, around which an idyllic fishing village sleeps in a timeless atmosphere. In front of Finland’s smallest cooperative store, which has been serving the island since 1907, summer guests can have a coffee while the boats come and go, enjoying the summer without a care. You can also easily reach Haapasaari by connecting ferry from Kotka’s Kuusinen harbour or by locally run cruises from Kotka’s Sapokka.

In the evening, you can enjoy wonderful sunsets from the comfort of your accommodation’s terrace.

Admire on the way amazingly beautiful islets and open seascapes polished by sea waves and winds. And, when you arrive in Tammio, experience the atmosphere of an authentic fishing village as you float between beach fences and log buildings.

Tammio, located out in the open sea, was already inhabited in the middle of the 16th century and fishing was practiced there until the 1950s. Stop by the island’s museum to get to know its history then comb the flea market and feel the atmosphere of bygone times in the neighbouring folk school built in 1891. In Tammio, relax by the shore and enjoy the summer archipelago. Although there are no services on the island, you can get both drinks and food on the cruise ship.

The magnificent Ulko-Tammio of the Outer Islands is uninhabited and shelters rare birds and plants. Its beautiful and lush nature with rugged coastal cliffs will leave an indelible impression.

Take a hike on well-marked nature trails through lush forests over rugged cliffs and through a wartime cave. Sit

on a hilltop, wind-swept bench to look at the deep blue landscape and peaceful horizon in the most southeastern corner of Finland. Climb the bird tower and grill your picnic lunch at the campfire. The most surprising thing will be if you don’t come back to Ulko-Tammio again.

You can get to Ulko-Tammio on a Meriset cruise from Kotka’s Sapokka harbour.

In the mood for charming Loviisa

28

For those who love picturesque blocks of wooden houses, Loviisa is a treasure. Give it time. Walk around the city blocks. Admire the gardens and feel the old-time atmosphere.

Start your Loviisa tour, for example, at the Loviisa City Museum, founded in 1904, which operates in a building built in 1755 as the Commandant’s House. In summer, the Commandant’s House garden is quite the experience. Old, useful and ornamental plants grow there in the spirit of the 1700s and 1800s. The people of Loviisa are proud of their gardens, and you can get to know them every year at the Loviisa Open Gardens and Loviisa Old Houses events.

Take a look at the enchanting Kappelinpuisto park, walk around

the historic Ehrensvärdin path and explore the Loviisa fortification located in Garrison’s fort park at the bottom of the Loviisa bay, where the Loviisa River flows into the sea.

The Loviisa church is a majestic sight and a good landmark from which to explore, for example, the Myllyharju - a favourite outdoor area for Loviisa residents. The 1.7 km route offers a view of the sea over idyllic blocks of wooden houses. Test your fitness on the steps of the Harju, admire the rhododendrons or climb up to the most beautiful observation tower in Finland. The red art nouveau-style Kukkukivi observation tower, more than a hundred years old and made of bent metal, is guaranteed to be special. The perfect place to admire Loviisa Bay glistening in the sun.

When it starts to get cold, Loviisa offers you delicious taste experiences in many atmospheric cafes and restaurants in the middle of the wooden buildings. Stop by unique boutiques and tour Loviisa’s flea markets and galleries. You’ll be amazed at how lovely it is, how much there is to do and experience in the village, and how strong the legacy of the iron lady Virginia af Forselles shines from the lovely red buildings along the Kymi River.

An atmosphere of the centuries-old traditions continues today in the hands of craftsmen respecting the old ways. In the blacksmith’s workshop, you can see how iron is forged with the only water hammer in the country, and in the adjacent stable you can stop to soak up the artistic atmosphere. In

the church of Ruotsinpyhtää located in the village, marvel at the altarpiece painted by Helene Schjerfbeck, which remains the only altarpiece painting by this internationally famous painter. In the small boutiques, you can get lovely souvenirs and cute decorative products.

It’s worth staying for several days so you can do both! In addition, you can go karting, enjoy a pampering and gentle soaks in the yurt sauna, and take a dip into the cooling embrace of the river.

On your way through the countryside of Loviisa, you must stop to experience the delightful atmosphere of the 50s in Finland’s smallest shop museum, which sits next to the fields near the village of Skinnarby, where Olavi Virta sings wistfully on the radio, and colourful boxes and jars fight for shelf space. The Historic Kymi River

The Kymi River has acted as a border river on several occasions. Sometimes our area was under Swedish rule and sometimes under Russian. This has brought quite a variety of important figures to the shores of the Kymi River, from the King of Sweden to the Tsars of Russia.

Have you ever stopped to think why there is a village called Pyhtää on the east side of the western branch of Kymi River and a village called Ruotsinpyhtää (Swedish Pyhtää) on the west side? Yes – you guessed right. In the beginning, they were the same area, but under the Peace of Turku in 1743 the border between Russia and Sweden separated the regions. Discover this area more in the Strömfors Ironworks and in Stockfors.

Strömfors Ironworks is one of the oldest ironworks in Finland. In 1695, the ’free lord’ Johan Creutz founded the first blacksmith’s workshop in the village of Petjärvi. The location along the westernmost branch of Kymi River was chosen since the water power of the rapids provided an abundant driving force in all seasons. In addition, there were extensive forest areas nearby. The setting created by the past generations has remained almost unchanged to the modern day, as a strongly distinctive, attractive entity.

Choose the peace of the wilderness, the exciting landscapes of flowing water, adventures in the heart of nature, kayaking, fishing, rapids swimming, or rafting. Or maybe even all of this?

Discover untamed rapids and tributaries. Let nature’s diverse works of art amaze you. Then smell the intoxicating roar of the touch or the peace of water flowing like a smooth ribbon.

The Kymi River, which have witnessed significant turning points in the history, flows down to the Eastern Gulf of Finland with five branches. Large parts of the river have remained natural while the landscapes vary from wilderness nature to grain fields and rural village sceneries.

Visit the wonderful parks and nature reserves along the Kymi River and get to know the history of the region. For fishermen and those looking for new experiences, the Kymi River is a treasure trove, because where else in Southern Finland can you go both rafting and salmon fishing?

The versatile Kymi River offers something for everyone. Enjoy a relaxing picnic day at Siikakoski Rapids Park, visit the imperial fishing lodge, bike along the rapids, paddle by Strömfors’ ironworks scenery, or try salmon fishing or rafting.

Discover the imperial atmosphere of Langinkoski

The Emperor of Russia to be, Alexander III, chose Langinkoski as his vacation spot. At the imperial fishing lodge, salmon were caught and atmospheric dinners were held. Today, the fishing lodge functions as a museum and is part of the National Museum of Finland.

Be enchanted by both the original historical appearance and the unique museum area. Choose the most charming souvenirs from the museum shop for yourself or as a gift. In the Langinkoski nature reserve, you can go on a refreshing nature trip just five kilometres from the centre of Kotka. The area around the rapids is also a permanent favourite of fly fishermen.
