Olympic flag arrives in Rio, marking race to 2016 RIO DE JANEIRO — The Olympic flag has touched down in Rio de Janeiro, the city that will host the 2016 summer Games.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes waved the five-ringed flag as he descended Monday from his flight from London, where he was on hand for the Olympic closing ceremony a day earlier.

The flag’s arrival marks the official start of Rio’s Olympic

preparations, with the city to undertake nearly 200 projects to construct sports venues and other infrastructure during the next four years.

Not all are elated; a small group of demonstrators gathered outside the airport where the mayor landed to protest against evictions connected with Olympic projects.

Rio will be the first South American city to host the Olympics.

ids around Adams County are dusting off their backpacks, pencils and notebooks in preparation for their first week in class.

School is right around the corner or has started for many of the districts in the county, including Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Adams 14 School District, Brighton 27J and Mapleton Public Schools. Most students will be heading back to school in the next couple of weeks: Adams 14 begins Aug. 13; School District 27J kicks

off Aug. 16; Adams 12 begins Aug. 20; and Mapleton begins Aug. 27.

Here’s a look at some of the news from across the school districts: In Adams 12, students will face higher fees this year, which is a direct result of about $12 million in cuts from the 201213 operating budget. About 51 teaching positions are being cut this year, in addition to four administrative positions and five support staffers.

The budget cuts will also affect parents who live in the district, as well as student athletes. The district’s athletic participation fee will also go from $115 to $130 per sport for the first two sports, and the reduced rate will go from $57.50 to $65.

School District 27J will start off the new year with a new superintendent, Chris Fiedler, who is taking over for outgoing super Rod Blunck. Fiedler has been in the

Sanchez will be charged with the task of quickly turning around plummeting student test scores in the district. State education officials recently put Adams 14 on a fiveyear turnaround plan.

Thornton-based Mapleton Public Schools, which serves some 8,000 students and operates 17 schools, is undergoing a number of renovation projects aimed at upgrading its aging central campus.

Demolition work is expected to finish soon as students move into two new buildings slated for the district’s Skyview campus.

Ryan traveled a perilous budget path to veep spot

WASHINGTON — Paul Ryan has had a notorious rise to political stardom.

While other lawmakers accepted trillion-dollar deficits, fearing to cut popular programs, he waded in with a machete and a smile.

Ryan hopes to cut from Medicare, food stamps and virtually every other government program but the military.

As Mitt Romney’s vice presidential pick, Ryan has become the candidate’s loudest voice on taxes and spending.

But Romney, without elaboration, has noted he doesn’t necessarily agree with all of his mate’s ideas.

Though the Wisconsin congressman has dropped some of his riskier proposals, controversy is still at hand.

Some of his current ideas include:

Ryan hopes to lower tax rates by compressing the current six brackets into two: 10 percent and 25 percent.

The current top rate for the wealthiest is 35 percent. He also would reduce the corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent. Ryan says he would make up the lost revenue by eliminating unspecified tax breaks and loopholes. Bush-era tax cuts would be extended for everyone.

Obama instead wants to allow tax rates for earnings over $200,000 per individual or $250,000 per couple to go up to 39.6 percent, a new high.

Ryan would cut its cost over the next decade from more than $4 trillion down to $3.4 trillion.

The Congressional Budget Office says that would sharply reduce the size of the program relative to the overall economy and leave states the choice of cutting benefits or spending more of their money.

Ryan says his plan would keep costs down by creating competition in the health care system. He also would gradually increase the eligibility age to 67. People already 55 or above could stay in the current system.

HAND OFF MEDICAID The fate of the health program for the poor is a glaring difference between Ryan’s vision and Obama’s.

The president’s health care overhaul pours more money into the program to extend coverage to millions of lowincome people. Ryan wants to repeal that expansion, curtail the program’s growth and hand it over to the states.

Instead, his budget would require that president and Congress find a way to fix the program’s finances.

Ryan’s main goal is to put the brakes on the nation’s out-of-control debt.

In March, the House passed a federal budget outline based on Ryan’s plans that would protect the Pentagon but reduce spending on almost everything else. It aims to whittle the annual deficit to about $287 billion in 2022. Compared to a $704 billion deficit projected for Obama’s budget plan. (The House bill is a non-starter in the Democratic-controlled Senate.)

Over the next decade Ryan’s plan spends $5.3 trillion less than Obama’s and cuts taxes by $2 trillion more.

Ryan also wants to limit how much government can spend on entitlement programs such as Medicaid. Critics say this would transfer the risks of rising prices or greater need to individual Americans.

REDO MEDICARE Ryan’s most controversial idea is to remake Medicare. Critics say he wants to undo the program’s nature of providing seniors the benefits they need. Ryan says he would give retirees more freedom while saving Medicare.

Under Ryan’s plan future retirees would get fixed government payments that could go toward buying private plans or joining a government-run program similar to Medicare. The insurers, including the government program, would make annual competitive bids that would determine the amount of the government’s payments. Older and sicker people would get larger payments; wealthier retirees would get smaller ones.

The growth of Medicare spending would be capped to keep medical inflation from overwhelming the national budget. In contrast, Obama proposes to limit Medicare costs by cutting payments to medical providers if spending surges.

Home away from home Making a move to dorm life means you’ll have to think small, but not necessarily boring

By Debbie Arrington, McClatchy Newspapers SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It may be small (and shared). But for at least one academic year, for thousands of college students, it’s home.

Over generations, the dorm room hasn’t gotten bigger. But the list of must-haves — including technology — that need to be squeeze into that space is much longer.

“All our rooms now have Wi-Fi access and satellite TV packages,” said Peggy Luers, coordinator for housing administration at California State University, Sacramento. “That was not an option when I was in school.”

Luers expects 1,600 students to start moving in on Aug. 24, including about 1,000 freshmen.

“Students need to be aware that the space they’re moving into is probably smaller than they’re used to — and they’re sharing,” Luers said. “Don’t bring everything all at once. You don’t want a crowded room.”

In Sacramento State’s residence halls, the average room size is 11 by 15 feet; that’s only 165 square feet. The rooms come furnished with extra-long twin beds, desks and chairs. There are closets and a little drawer space.

The challenge is to make that the room feel like home.

“We want them to be comfortable,” Luers said. “They have a place to bring out their personality, but they also should use some common sense”and follow the rules.

Each college has its own variations of dorm do’s and don’ts with some constants. No nails in the walls. No painting. No pets.

But that leaves plenty of decorating options.

Get a copy (most schools have it online) before you buy. w Start with the bed.

Most dorms provide extra-long twins.

That means you’ll need XL twin sheets. Other standard twin bedding (such as blankets, quilts and duvets) will fit the XL beds. And, get a good mattress pad. w That bed will get double duty as a couch. Get pillows that can be used as backrests.

An oversized body pillow is a good option. w Make the most of your space.That includes under the bed. It’s perfect for storage. w Organize from the beginning. By giving everything its own place, you get more space. w Make room for school supplies and a place to study with a good task light. w Don’t forget coat hangers. Other must-have basics: Laundry basket, detergent, shower caddy and shower shoes. w Think vertically.

Claim the space on the walls.

Use hanging storage in the closet. Get stuff off the floor and the room will seem larger. w You’ll need a good power strip. Outlets are limited. Your gadgets will need a charging dock, too. w Don’t bring everything. Think of your dorm space as the size of a small bathroom. Leave the futon at home. w Make room for snacks as well as items for in-room dining like plates.

Area rugs are another way to add a splash of color and personalize its small space.

For friends who stop by, more seating is appreciated. That’s where beanbags and collapsible chairs come in.

“The Hang-A-Round chair, for example, can be folded up and put in the closet or under the bed,” Guettier said. “It comes in lots of fun fabrics such as ‘Furlicious.” a sheep-like fabric.

Lighting is important, particularly for study time. Consider task lights for desks or clip-on fixtures for reading in bed.

To keep clutter under control, maximize the dorm room’s small space with organizers, another product area that’s expanded greatly in recent years.

“Organization is key,” Luers said. “Use that space, including under the bed and in the closet.”

Guettier said that despite being challenged by space you want to declutter when it comes time to study.

“You can put everything in its place,” She said.

“These products are both stylish and functional.”

On the walls, poster putty and removable adhesive allow students to put up decorations and practical bulletin boards without messing up the paint. For example, PBteen’s Style Tiles allow for mix and match of chalk, dry erase and cork boards to fit any wall.

A well-equipped dorm room needs a minifridge, microwave and television, but not two.

That’s another area where technology comes in.

“Students have access to so much more information now,” Luers said. “They can go on the Internet and communicate with their roommates before they arrive.”

Coordinating with roomates on what to bring helps avoid duplication and that means less stuff Mom and will have to lug back home with them.

Catering to this youth market, Pottery Barn recently opened its first West Coast PBteen store.

“The PBdorm line is a little more sophisticated,” explained Nancy Guettier, vice president of visual merchandizing for Pottery Barn Kids and PBteen. “The colors are more muted; a lot of plum and gray. (The brand) offers a smart, savvy solution to college life.”

At the new PBteen store, soon-to-be college students can literally see themselves in dorm room settings. A digital design center allows them to put together their own combinations and share them with friends on video screens.

Dorm life means laundry. (PBteen offers cloth laundry bags with instructions printed on the outside.)

“My advice to parents: Teach your teens how to do laundry before they arrive in the dorms,” Luers said.

Because linens may look alike, distinctive patterns or colors can help roommates tell items apart. PBteen also offers a monogram service for its linens.

Bedding and towels start the list of musthave dorm items. Pillows (especially an oversized back-rest variety) are a plus.

Incluir el desayuno en las actividades de la mañana puede ser un desafío. Un 10 por ciento de los niños en edad escolar no toma el desayuno.

Y casi uno de cada tres adolescentes tampoco comen el desayuno, según la American Academy of Pediatrics.

Pero las calorías de la mañana tienen muchos beneficios. Es combustible para el cuerpo y la mente, ayudando a los niños en enfocarse mejor en la escuela.

Además de no tener tiempo, otra razón por la que especialmente las niñas no toman desayuno es para perder peso. LiveWell Colorado promotes healthy living through ciclovias

housands of Denverites took to the streets to celebrate healthy lifestyles during Viva Streets on Sunday.

Viva Streets, an event organized by LiveWell Colorado and Bike Denver, was inspired by Ciclovias, first started in Bogota. For the event, 23rd avenue was blocked off from City Park to Stapleton road.

Tracy Boyle, a spokeswoman for LiveWell Colorado, said the purpose of the event was to showcase Denver’s streets as a place for more than just cars.

Boyle also said it is important to promote a more active lifestyle considering 58 percent of all Colorado adults are overweight or obese and about a quarter of the state’s children.

“We really need to make being active a part of our lifestyle, to help stay healthy,” Boyle said.

In the case of Latinos, the overweight threat is even greater. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mexican Americans have an obesity rate of 40.4 percent, while all Hispanics hover around 39 percent.

Nutritionist Malena Perdomo said Latin food offers a hearty and healthy combination but mixing it with fast food and high stress jobs pushes the Hispanic population into the high-risk area.

“We like healthy food, but if you combine them with junk food, sodas or things that you can pick up like fast food, that connection right there is not good for us,” Perdomo said.

Perdomo said she has partnered with LiveWell to help people think more about what they eat.

As a Latina herself - originally from Panama Perdomo said that she has been working closely with the Hispanic community in Colorado, helping people look for healthy options while still sticking to their budget.

“It’s not that complicated to have healthy habits and keep them up,” she said.

Perdomo said there is still much more to do, but the first step is getting people to acknowledge

that they need to change their habits.

“You don’t have to spend that much money to be healthy,” she said. “You’ve got Colorado, you have those beautiful places that you can hike and walk and run.”

Gosi Kung, executive director of Walk Denver, said they advocate to make Denver more pedestrian-friendly so people can add physical activity to their daily routines.

Kung said having a walkable city also helps for economic development because people can stop at their local stores and restaurants.

Boyle said about 10,000 people came to Viva Streets more than last year when the event started.

Organizers of the event hope to take the event to other streets around the city.

Traci Stewart of Denver, came out with her two kids to teach her daughter how to bike.

“I like seeing my neighbors,” Stewart said. “I’m seeing a lot of my neighbors and it is a fun different way to see them.”

The event started at 10 a.m. with a parade where children and adults alike were encouraged to dress up and decorate their bikes.

1. Drain the sliced cucumbers on a paper towel for a few minutes.

2. Combine the cucumbers in glass bowl with the scallions, onion, cilantro and mint leaves.

3. Sprinkle the vinegar, lemon juice and sugar.

Gently toss all of the ingredients together. Let it sit in the fridge for 1 or 2 hours, to improve soak in the flavors.

4. Optional: Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp of chili flakes and 3 tbs of unsalted roasted crushed peanuts.

oogle’s 3D Cityscape lanzó la semana pasada sus imágenes de Denver en iOS, para que los usuarios de iPhone y el iPad puedan realizar vuelos virtuales sobre el área metropolitana de esta ciudad con el movimiento de sus dedos.

The new feature is similar to the much-hyped flyover capability that will be included in Apple’s Maps program as part ofiOS 6, the forthcoming mobile operating system expected to power the company’s next iPhone.

Google’s 3-D city landscaping and images are available in about a dozen cities. The features rolled out in Denver and Seattle last week. The online search giant hopes to cover 300 million people by the end of the year.

“We’ve been working on 3-D modeling for a long time, but we’ve only been able to model small areas,” said Peter Birch, product manager for

Google Earth. “This is really a fundamentally new approach we’re taking in order to build these really complete and accurate 3-D cityscapes.”

The process starts with the company capturing “oblique aerial imagery,” shooting in each of the four cardinal directions at a 45-degree angle, Birch said. The company then uses the overlapping images and a computer algorithm to extract the 3-D model of the buildings, trees and other structures.

Google is aiming to build the most accurate digital replica of the world, allowing users to gain a sense of place before they visit a destination, among other things.

The feature is already available for certain Androidbased smartphones. In terms of iOS devices, it will be compatible only with the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and 3 and, presumably, the next iPhone.

Hace algo más de un año algunos de estos futbolistas tuvieron involucrados en un acto de indisciplina que les costó la suspensión del plantel a poco de disputarse la Copa América en Argentina, en que la selección “azteca” hizo el papelón y fue eliminada en primera ronda.

Pero ese amargo recuerdo comenzó a quedar atrás después que Tena condujo a México a la medalla de oro en el fútbol de los Juegos Panamericanos de Guadalajara celebrados en octubre.

Tena puede darse por satisfecho. Y el conductor de la selección absoluta, José Manuel de la Torre, debe darle las gracias porque le pone a las órdenes a varios jugadores jóvenes y otros más maduros para enfrentar las eliminatorias al Mundial de Brasil del 2014, que ya están en marcha.

México tiene una vieja deuda en las copas mundiales, en las que nunca han logrado superar los cuartos de final.

“Chepo” de la Torre estuvo acompañando al equipo en Londres,

pero regresó a México el miércoles para preparar un amistoso de la selección mayor, comentó Tena.

Explicó que de la Torre desistió al considerar que los jugadores llevaban mucho tiempo fuera debido al torneo en Londres y que era mejor que se fuesen a casa a descansar.

El primero a tomar muy en cuenta en la selección mayor sería Peralta. Si bien este atacante ya ha sido llamado en partidos del “Tri” y ha jugado pasajes al lado de Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, el delantero del Santos Laguna hizo suficientes méritos para ratificarse como titular en la absoluta.

Por allí se asoma una lucha entre Peralta y el veterano Aldo de Nigris.

El “Chicharito” Hernández, del Manchester United, es inamovible actualmente en la delantera.

Tena destacó que este oro olímpico es el resultado al trabajo que se está haciendo en México en las “fuerzas básicas” o categorías inferiores.

Heredar la antorcha olímpica después de Londres le plantea a Río de Janeiro, sede de los Juegos de 2016, un nuevo nivel de desafíos no sólo en la organización, sino especialmente en lo deportivo.

Río de Janeiro está observando cada detalle de lo sucedido en Londres con la expectativa de emular sus éxitos y evitar sus desaciertos.

“Hemos estado muy impresionados con las Olimpiadas de Londres. Han sido unos juegos extraordinarios para la ciudad y para el mundo”, reconoció el alcalde de Río de

Janeiro, Eduardo Paes.

Paes dijo esperar revivir el ambiente de alegría y la organización ejemplar de 2012 cuando la antorcha olímpica llegue a la antigua capital de Brasil, celebrada por su belleza natural y su gente acogedora, pero criticada por su caos urbano y problemas de violencia.

El alcalde carioca confía que el legado de las Olimpiadas ayudará a Río a superar deficiencias actuales eninfraestructura, particularmente en transporte, y aseguró que las obras de mayor alcance ya están en marcha para asegurar que estén listas antes del plazo límite.

“Trabajamos con cierta holgura, vamos a entregar los Juegos Olímpicos con bastante anticipación para que la ciudad pueda aprovecharlos lo más rápidamente posible”, declaró Paes. Los Juegos de Río también verán el debut de dos nuevas disciplinas: el rugby 7 y el golf, que regresa al menú por primera vez desde San Luis en 1904.

os aficionados al boxeo esperan desde hace meses el enfrentamiento entre los fuertes pegadores Mike Alvarado y Brandon Ríos. La espera ya casi llega a su fin.

Alvarado (33-0), de Denver, viajará al Home Depot Center cerca de Los Angeles para enfrentarse el 13 de octubre a Brandon Ríos (30-0-1) en la categoría peso welter junior, según confirmó el 7 de agosto el promotor de la pelea.

El combate será parte de “Boxing After Dark” de HBO y precederá al encuentro por el título de peso bantam de Nonito Donaire con Toshiaki Nishioka.

Será la mayor pelea de Alvarado hasta la fecha y la que más dinero le dejará, dijo Carl Moretti, vicepresidente de Top Rank.

Alvarado viene de dos electrizantes peleas en los últimos nueve meses, dos brutales encuentros que le trajeron numerosos simpatizantes. En noviembre, Alvarado debió esforzarse y sangrar para alcanzar su décimo “knockout” en los momentos finales del combate contra Breidis Prescott.

Y en abril, Alvarado (campeón de lucha de las escuelas secundarias de Colorado), le ganó por puntos en decisión unánime a Marco Herrera.

En ambos casos se trató de peleas preliminares en Las Vegas, primero antes de que Manny Pacquiao derrotase a Juan Manuel Márquez y luego antes de que Ríos le ganase en fallo dividido a Richard Abril.

Ríos, de Oxnard, California, no dio el peso en sus últimas dos

peleas y perdió su título de peso ligero. Pero para esta pelea contra Alvarado, Ríos subió a 140 libras.

Alvarado se está entrenando en Los Angeles desde hace varias semanas.

Se esperaba que pelease el 13 de septiembre en Las Vegas contras Michael Katsidis, antes del combate entre Julio César Chávez y Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez. Pero los asesores de Alvarado prefirieron otro camino.

“El único que nos interesa es Ríos. Tenemos que pelear contra Ríos”, dijo Henry Delgado, administrador de Alvarado.

Moretti, de Top Rank, dijo que la pelea Alvarado-Ríos “es una mejor oportunidad para Mike”.

“Es más dinero, más exposición. Es una oportunidad para pelear contra un oponente de más categoría”, agregó.

Tanto Alvarado como Ríos son fuertes pegadores que no se echan atrás.

“Va a ser una pelea como Gatti contra Ward en la que ninguno da un paso atrás”, dijo Moretti en referencia a los tres combates entre Arturo Gatti y Mickyen 20022003.

Boxing fans have clamored for months to see heavy-hitting fighters Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios go against each other.

Finally fans will get what they want.

Denver’s Alvarado (33-0) will travel to face Brandon Rios (30-0-1) in a junior welterweight bout outdoors at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles on Oct. 13, the fight’s promoter confirmed on Aug. 7.

The fight, airing on HBO for its “Boxing After Dark” telecast, will be the undercard for a super bantamweight title bout between Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka.

It will be Alvarado’s biggest fight to date, and his biggest payday, said Carl Moretti, vice president of Top Rank promotions.

Alvarado is coming off two thrilling bouts in the past nine months — both brutal brawls that raised his profile among fight fans. In November, a bloodied Alvarado rallied to earn a 10th-round knockout in the waning seconds against Breidis Prescott.

Then in April, Alvarado, a former Colorado high school wrestling champion, earned a unanimous decision after overpowering Mauricio Herrera.

Both of those fights were on undercards in Las Vegas — the first before Manny

Pacquiao’s victory over Juan Manuel Marquez; the second before Rios’ disappointing split decision victory over Richard Abril.

Rios — who fights out of Oxnard, Calif.

— in his past two fights came in overweight and he was stripped of his lightweight title.

But Rios will move up in weight against Alvarado for his first fight at 140 pounds.

Alvarado for several weeks has been in Los Angeles training for what he expected would be a Sept. 13 date on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez bout in Las Vegas. It was presumed Alvarado would go against Michael Katsidis in that fight.

But Alvarado’s camp always had their

eyes on Rios.

“The only one we see is Brandon Rios,” Alvarado’s manager, Henry Delgado, said.

“We need to fight Rios.”

Moretti said of the Alvarado-Rios bout: “It’s a better opportunity for Mike.

It’s more money, more exposure. It’s an opportunity to fight a much higher opponent.”

Alvarado and Rios both are known as forward-pressing punchers who don’t back down.

“It should be a Gatti-Ward type fight, where neither guy takes a backstep,” Moretti said, comparing them to the reknowned Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward trilogy in 2002-03.

ost Colorado cycling events start in the mountains or foothills, but when Pedal the Plains makes its debut on Sept. 21, the wheels will start turning in Yuma, approximately 150 miles from the Rocky Mountain foothills.

And riders will head east, not west, from there.

During their 168-mile, three-day tour of the high prairie, riders will expect to see the amber waves of grain that “America the Beautiful” lyricist Katherine Lee Bates imagined from her perch atop Pikes Peak. But they may be surprised by some of the other sights awaiting them, both on the route and off.

Kit Carson County Carousel A destination for carousel fans throughout the world, this 1905 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel still offers a four-minute ride for a quarter. The hand-carved mounts include a fantastic interpretation of a sea horse called a hippocampus, a smirking camel, a St. Bernard with a loopy grin, an armored horse suited for a knight, an arrogant giraffe and a toothy and well-coiffed lion.

Grampa Jerry’s Clown Museum The late Jerry Elder’s astonishing and slightly unnerving collection of clown ephemera is housed in a garage behind the D-J Market on County Road 63. Inside, narrow rows of shelves are cheek by jowl with what Elder estimates are 3,000 to 4,000 items of clown paraphernalia. It ranges from genuine antiques, like the carnival game clown faces, to plastic souvenir cups from recent Ringling circus visits.

Easily the most memorable item in Elder’s collection is the clown painted on a hairball harvested from a cow’s stomach at a rendering plant. You can’t say you didn’t get your money’s worth: Admission is free.

Picketwire Canyon More than 1,400 dinosaur tracks in 100 different trackways stretch over a quarter-mile of bedrock in Picketwire Canyon near the Purgatoire River in Comanche National Grassland.

This is the largest documented concentration of dinosaur trackways in North America.

The only motorized access to the tracks in Picketwire Canyon is through one of the U.S. Forest Service’s guided automobile tours, by reservation only on Saturdays Sept. 1-Oct. 20. Otherwise, you can hike or bike the eight miles in to see the tracks and explore rock art, the ruins of a mission and cemetery and an abandoned old horse ranch.
