ruthfully I thought it was going to be easier, quicker, more comfortable and less costly. Even though it
wound up being the opposite, it was worth it. Following our first trip to give shoes, backpacks full of school supplies and food to Casa Hogar, an orphanage in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 2007, my brother, Cesar, and I recognized the terrible poverty that many families face outside the United States. Yet one thing we noticed was that the children

could be hungry, their clothes in rags, their home a shack, but they weren’t ashamed until it came to their feet. Many who wore tattered shoes or went barefoot hid their feet because they were embarrassed that we saw them. Thus the Zapatos Sin Fronteras (Shoes without Borders) project was born from the desire to give these kids a little self-confidence with the help of a new pair of shoes. Apart from getting us from one place to another, feet are a symbol of achievement, carrying us through the bad and the good

to better our lives. A belief in that desire landed us in Rodeo, Guatemala, delivering shoes and food to kids living in extreme poverty. Thanks to our friend William “Willy” Masariegos, who had returned to live in Rodeo less than a year before, we were aware of the need that exists in this little town on the border with Chiapas, Mexico. We arrived to see it for ourselves at 10:30 at night on January 4 after a day’s worth of
