The California International Marathon is an event hosted by the non-profit Sacramento’s Running Association. This event is not only a great opportunity for community service hours but a great opportunity to give funds back to our club! If we have 25 volunteers attend our club will receive a $250 donation and if we have 50 volunteers our club will receive a $500! Please attend this event and encourage your friends to do so as well, thank you!

So many of us are fortunate enough to look forward to a Christmas tree stocked with presents and a Christmas dinner stuffed with plenty of good food this holiday season. Sadly, not everyone is this fortunate. In fact, over 795 million people are undernourished in our world. This huge number may seem intimidating, but there are many simple things that we can do to help alleviate this dire situation. During the holiday season many organizations hold various drives ranging from canned food drives to toy drives as a way for the community to give back to the less fortunate. We as high school students can also easily participate in these drives! All it takes is a quick search online, a drive, and a drop off to bring a little light into someone’s holiday season! Pleas contact me for more details on how you can involved in a drive and I’ll be happy to help you!

On November 12th four Key Clubs, Franklin, Sheldon, Monterey Trail, and Laguna Creek, came together for a day of community service and for a social! Attendees brought pot luck items to share and everyone enjoyed the feast before the service began. The day was focused on making items that we could donate to the community, particularly dog toys for the nearby animal shelter and cards + PTP dolls to give to children in the neighboring hospitals. Key Club, in light of the holiday season, is focusing on giving back along with attending community events as volunteers. The event was a lot of fun and a great opportunity for members, old and new alike, to meet new people and spend the day talking and giving back. By the end of the day we made many dog toys, cards, and dolls that were loaded up and dropped off to their designated recipients. This interclub was one of the largest we’ve pulled off and we would like to thank everyone who attended! Without you, the members, it wouldn’t have been such a success! Thank you so much.

An exciting annual event that was revamped this year, Gift of Giving draws over 400 volunteers from around the entire Division Seven South! The day is centered around new interactions and making items for the less fortunate as Thanksgiving and Christmas Draw Near. This event is a Key Club favorite because it’s a perfect blend of socializing, service, and fun! Volunteers are randomly split off into groups with fun names to them, “lit leaves” and “jam fam” to name a few, where their group leaders take them through various workshops, including ice breakers, cloth cutting, and beanie sewing. Lunch is served midway through the day and it’s a competition for who gets to eat first, won by waging spirit battles. Each group has their own cheer and the crowd is riled! It’s a mix of new and returning members, high school and college students, and its an opportunity to get new perspectives and gain knowledge from everyone new that you meet. If you didn’t attend this year, make sure to go next time! Its an event you won’t want to miss.

In Introduction to The Following Articles: Before you read the articles that are featured in this month’s newsletter, I wanted to say a few words about why I chose to ask Franklin Key Club Members about this topic: How Key Club Has Impacted Our Lives Positively. By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will have passed and I wanted to reflect on all the things and opportunities that we are all so lucky to have. Key Club is one of them. Not only is it a community service organization, but it is also a connection to new people from all across schools, states, even countries. It also is a tool that you can use to impact the world around you positively. I hope that Key Club has, in some way, enabled you to make a difference. That is what we strive to do after all, to provide you guys with opportunities to gain leadership skills so that in the future you might continue to impact the world positively. And, if you don’t feel like Key Club is allowing you to do so, please contact us and we’ll work our absolute hardest to make sure you are given the opportunities you deserve. Thank you and have a happy rest of your holidays!

When I joined key club during my Sophomore year, all I wanted to do is community service and to just get my required hours for high school. I remember when I attended Fall Rally North at six flags in 2015, I started to realize how much of a family key club is. It felt like it was a celebration for accomplishments we have achieved, and also appreciating our progress every single year. I learned that the Division 7 South Orange Monsters aren't just the only family I have. Other divisions, regions, and districts are one big happy family. Being a part of key club not only changed my life, but changed everyone's lives. One instance that happened not to long ago was at 2017 Fall Rally North, I walked around with my friends with my free hug sign. A 7 - 8 year old child wanted a free hug, and that immediately impacted my life as a key club member but also as a life changer. It showed appreciation that child has given to me because for what I have participated in helping the community become an undivided, positive, and peaceful place to live and experience in. In the future, my biggest, most toughest goal is to continue to strive for a more love in the world, and also educate younger generations on how to live your life more successful and more positive for others to impact on. Thank you, Maxwell Zarzuela

As a three year member of Key Club, I've learned so much through participating in community service events. Elementary school festivals are my favorite because as a volunteer, I'm able to brighten a child's night. Encouraging the younger students to try their best and cheering them on in the games, I look quite awkward and funny; however, watching the smile twinkle from a child's face is definitely worth my embarrassing words of encouragement. Spending hours handing out free applause and compliments, I end up in a very positive mood afterwards and a feeling of fulfillment. By working at the booths and games, I begin to develop a sense of confidence, and I become less hesitant when interacting with adults and children. Also, helping event leaders assemble the wonderful runs and marathons within Elk Grove and Sacramento is another great way for me to develop the skills needed for good customer service. During these crowded events, I've learned the necessary, formal, friendly attitude needed to direct participants, and I have also gotten the wonderful

Chance to make the event a success for those in charge and for the guests. Building my confidence and my leadership abilities, these amazing service options have helped me develop new skills that I wouldn't be able to find in a classroom. Key Club's great service opportunities are definitely a great way to enjoy my time with friends while helping our wonderful community.

When I was a still a student at Toby Johnson Middle School I had a cousin who was at Franklin High school. He was a member of Key Club and highly encouraged me to join once I got to high school. My image of Key Club before I joined was a group of students who attended volunteer events every week together, but what I found wasn’t just a volunteer organization, but a family. From the introductory course that Key Club provided for incoming freshmen to the general meetings we hold every week now, I’ve felt welcomed. In turn this has taught me to be welcoming to everyone I come across as well. Key Club has also taught me how much power I have to help solve the problems I see around me. As I grew up I always had the subdued belief that as a kid I couldn’t do anything except study and work to go to college, the world saving stuff would come later. However, Key Club has shown me the complete opposite and has helped me realize that often times the youngest generations have the most power in their limitless potential. Through the countless service events that I’ve attended I’ve been able to give gifts to children in the hospital, raise money to kick AIDS out of Africa, help give gifts and food to the homeless, and so much more. I’m so thankful for the opportunity of being able to get involved with an organization like Key Club. It’s an excellent and easy way for high school students to get involved in their community and it’s helped to teach me so much about myself and about others. I will be forever indebted to this organization.
