A Reflection on Relay for Life Ethan Dang, Interviewed by Vi Le

Ethan Dang is an incoming senior, a three-going-on-four year Key Club member and a recent attendee of the annual Relay for Life, an event that is held in support of cancer victims and cancer research. His brother introduced him to Key Club and when he joined he felt very happy to be a part of this organization. “I belong here,” He said. Ethan’s Key Club Moment was at his first DCON when he was a sophomore; he remembered the emotional good bye speeches. “I realized how big the organization was and how much of an impact I could make on the area around me,” he said. He decided to go to Relay for Life because he wanted to hang out with friends and support the survivors of cancer. He described the event as being really fun because he was around friends; it was loud and cool to relax under big tents and show off their spirit. At the event he walked the track, watched performances, sang songs and played music. This was his second time at Relay for Life, and he said that his first relay for life was better however because there had been more people to hang out with and there were more schools present, it was also at Franklin High School, our home school.

Applying for Extended Board Katrina Do and Lillyanne Manisay, Interviewed by Vi Le

Franklin Key Club has just determined the new term’s extended board, and for our Scrapbook Heads we have two eager girls that our Bulletin Editor got the chance to sit down and talk with. Katrina Do is an incoming sophomore; she is involved in the Pretty and Pink Club, Franklin’s ASB, and of course Key Club. She likes interacting with people, designing, drawing, and she joined Key Club because of her eagerness to serve. “I wanted to do community service,” she said. Lillyanne is an incoming senior and she joined Key Club at Club Rush because she noticed that a lot of people were signing up to join. She likes music, plays the violin, and enjoys sports as well. “My Key Club moment was at my first DCON,” she said. She found pinning people and seeing them on social media later on to be a lot of fun. As for why she went for the scrapbook head position, Lillyanne said that when she saw the untraditional scrapbook at DCON she was inspired and thought the job would be fun. Katrina is really into the tech part of the scrapbook creation process. “I was mostly interested in the digital part because I like making edits,” she said.

All committee head hopefuls go through the same process; application then interview. Lillyanne at first was hesitant to apply because she was worried that a lot of people would apply and that an incoming senior would be less desirable in comparison to a sophomore or junior. The interview also intimidated her at first but it turned out to actually be quite casual. Katrina had second doubts as well because she too was worried about many people applying and felt concern towards the stereotype surrounding “the middle age woman who is kind of laughed at for making scrapbooks”. She found the application to be really easy for the questions were simple. The interview scared her, but she too found it to be very casual and comfortable. Looking forward to the new term and their new jobs, Lillyanne is confident in her ability to get her work done. “I’m not too worried about the job,” she said. Katrina is worried about people’s expectations of the scrapbook. Both said that they looked forward to a future in Key Club after their Scrapbook Head term was over.

On June 20th, a hot summer’s day, Laguna Creek and Franklin Key Clubbers got together at Kloss Park to make dog toys for charity out of old t-shirts. There were a couple of complaints about the heat, but it was fun nonetheless and a nice way to get to know Key Clubbers from other schools. Interclubs serve to build better bonds between Key Clubbers of all different schools, and Fido Feels certainly accomplished that! Many volunteers walked away with new friends after the event was over.

“I didn’t know Diego (from Laguna Creek) that well before I planned this interclub with him… but that was before we got a chance to hang out together,” said Cassandra Woo. She expressed feelings of cheery newfound companionship towards Diego.

Franklin Key Club’s executive and extended board listen attentively to the student speaker at June’s Division Council Meeting

For the month of June, Division 7 South decided to have it’s DCM and OTC at Monterey Trail High School. About seventy members of the division were in attendance, all excited to hear club updates and division updates from our DLT. President Cassandra Woo updated the division about our recent Recycling Sorting party, our recent interclub with Laguna Creek, as well as our first board meeting with both executive and extended board. Our LTG Anthony Chan shared with us news of our progress on division goals as a whole, the upcoming design contest for our new division t-shirt , as well as a contest for designing the graphics for DCON 2018. The newly appointed DLT were also announced, congratulations to all who were chosen! At the Officer Training Conference Key Club leaders presented workshops focusing on each leadership position available at the club level (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, bulletin editor) as well as “Table Topics” such as member retention and planning service projects. The event was very successful and Key Clubbers had fun.

“It’s an amazing feeling to witness members of our community making contributions to help save the lives of others” - Jia Lin

Pictured on the Left are Key Club volunteers helping to set up the Registration Booth at the Elk Grove Run For Hunger Race to smoothen the process of racers getting signed in.

The Elk Grove Run for Hunger Race is put on by the Elk Grove Food Bank Services, an organization that pushes the fight against poverty and hunger in the southern county area of our region. This organization was founded in 1974 and since it’s inception over 4 million meals have been served. Each year, friends, families, and community members come out for the annual tradition of raising awareness and critical funds for local hunger relief. The support of the community provides food, clothing, and “a serving of hope to over 4,500 individuals each month.

“I volunteered for the setup (at DICK'S Sporting Goods) of the Run 4 Hunger on Thursday. It was nice because it was indoors, in an air-conditioned building, out of the oppressing heat. Volunteers were provided chairs, food (lunch and snacks), and drinks. The participants picked up their bibs at the first station, picked up Swag Bags at the next, and then picked out their t-shirts. Volunteers spent a majority of the time waiting for people to come; we got excited whenever there were people to help out as there were fairly few people picking up bibs (although some got bibs for a whole team). In the morning, I got to meet some new people who turned out to be related to a teacher at Franklin, Mrs. Knapp. In the second shift, I knew all the Franklin volunteers. When we weren't helping anyone, we were laughing so hard we could get abs. They stayed with me until the last shift. Overall, it was great to form new bonds while strengthening existing ones. - Jane Huynh

The Ronald McDonald House Charities are an American independent nonprofit organization whose stated mission is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. Franklin Key Club supports this charity by attending their service events because we also stand for the improvement in the well beings of children. Our Major Emphasis after all is Children: Their Future, Our Focus and we try our hardest to attend as many service events that go towards helping the many children of this world. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “We cannot prepare the future for our youth, but we can prepare our youth for the future.

DCM stands for Division Council Meeting

They occur every month

They are a way for people to meet other Key Clubbers from other schools If you’re looking to get more involved in Key Club, attend the next DCM! Contact any officer if you want to know when and where the next DCM is!

Never forget what an opportunity you have to use the time you’ve been given to give back to the community! Thank you for providing the community with service, love, and care
