Spring 2023
You don’t need to be on the set of Emily in Paris to dress with flare and penache. This first collection is built around three exciting textiles we picked up from Chicago fashion designer Andria Lieu. Imagine yourself going out in a tunic length tank top whipped up from Paris Marina, topped by a bell-sleeve tie-front 3/4 length sweater you’ve masterfully crafted from Andria’s Paris Coupe , and Capris sewn from Paris Bark. The color coordination between the marina and bark enhance the distressed designer knit perfectly. Use excess of the marina to bind the edges of the distressed knit if you don’t want to make a facing. The brown stretch poplin of Paris Bark will fit the bill for slacks, a jacket, and a matching bag that you can embroider.
Our next fabric from Andria is Paris Sweater. Although it looks heavy, the surprisingly light yarns are affixed to a sheer mesh. We envision this as a long sweater coat for spring, as well as a cool wrap to toss dramatically over your shoulders while you run errands.

Springtime in Paris - an iconic phrase, but how much do you really know about the most famous French city? The land along the Seine River was first settled nearly three hundred years BCE by the Parisii, a tribe of peaceful Celtic fishermen. The peace lasted just two hundred years until the conquering Romans came plundering. Enter the King of the Franks (aka French) who retook the land and named it Paris. During the Middle Ages, Paris became the largest city in Europe, trading with other countries and transporting goods along the Seine River. Fast-forward through the 14th century Bubonic Plague, the 15th century victory of the

Hundred Years’ War against the English (thanks in part to Joan of Arc), followed by more plague and more conflict between Catholics and Protestants. All this upheaval forged the French spirit. A proud people, fierce in their defense of their country and culture, the French have celebrated life against a backdrop of war and hardship. Holding fast to the belief that all things French are best, they have forged the way in gastronomy and fashion, unforgiving in their joie de vivre - zest for life. Join us on a Parisian journey through time that would make the writers of Jeopardy! clamor to create new answers.

We have seen over the past year how tie-dye has exploded in popularity. Paris Mallard has a very subtle tie-dye print, which perfectly suits those of you who prefer the tone-on-tone effect. Jewel-tone lovers - this fabric is ideal for you! Enjoy the allway stretch and soft hand.
Thinking ahead to warmer weather, make some drawcord, loose pants from Paris Terre, a substantial weight cotton gauze. We love it’s texture, rich brown color, and breathability. Top it off with Paris Unique. A crumpled, textured, abstract printed sheer has been stitched to a base layer all-way stretch knit, creating a super cool looking wearable art piece. Hurry and order early - we can’t re-order! If you still need a spring jacket, make an oragami or boxy short jacket from the gauze to complete your ensemble.

Our Louis Collection is a mash-up of two smaller collections. Begin with Louis Piqué, a textured stretch poly-cotton blend from Italy. This begs to be a jacket or lined skirt to wear with Louis Impression, an abstract coral and purple floral on a blue-grey background. This print is extra wide, so chances are you will be able to get your front, back, and possibly the sleeves cut from one length. Now feel Louis Regal and imagine wearing it as shorts, Capris, slacks, a golf skirt, and even a button down top to wear over the knit print on chilly nights when a jacket might be overkill.

Louis Collection
The birth of Paris as one of the great fashion centers of the world, began in 1643 when King Louis XIV took the French throne. At the start of his 72-year reign, France had no fashion industry. It imported silks from Milan and clothes from Madrid, then the fashion capitals of the world. To create work for his subjects and cut the need to import foreign goods, Louis established French textile and clothing industries and guilds of fine artisans. These soon employed a third of all French workers. He then enacted laws forbidding the import of foreign fabrics and clothing. Unlike the somber black Spanish fashions, Louis’ craftsmen created colorful and intricate garments. A shrewd businessman, Louis understood the power of the press to shape ideas and perceptions. (He would have loved social media!) To spread the word about these exciting new designs and fabrics, he employed engravers and artists to produce French fashion images which he sent around the world. Soon, women in other countries were clamoring for Parisian styles. Louis also introduced the idea of seasonal fashion changes which made it socially unacceptable to wear summer clothing after November 1st, or winterwear after Easter. That also increased orders for his workmen. By producing high-quality materials and inventive designs, France soon became the fashion leader of the Western world. And, from that day to this, despite great revolutions and inept rulers, Paris remains synonymous with high fashion.

The bluer part of the Louis Collection begins with Louis Lawn. We have two of these gorgous digital cotton lawn prints in our catalog, and many, many more in our retail store. Sew a top from the lawn now and wear it through the early autumn. We have matched up Louis Stone stretch cotton poplin for you to tailor into slacks and a jacket to keep as wardrobe staples.
You can also wear your stone slacks with a knit top sewn from Louis Ocean, the second of our subtle tie-dye rib knits. Then whip up a pullover or zip-front hoodie from Louis Navy. This fleece-backed sweatshirt knit is part of the Richmond Collection in our retail store and comes in red, royal, white, black, and dark grey in addition to the navy.

One of the most popular fabrics from our Early Spring issue was the cotton lawn with large purple poppies. We now present you with two 57” cotton lawns sporting more dramatic flowers from the same manufacturer, VF232-16 & VF232-22. sew these into oversized, billowing button-down shirts to wear over a tank top and shorts, as well as into shells, tunics, and poolside cover-ups.
Our first large floral cotton lawn print, Catacombs Première, features brown, brick, and grey flowers on a French vanilla base. Wear this as a cool tunic over a Catacombs Brique bandeau and leggings to round out the ensemble. This heavyweight cotton jersey is wide, opaque, and has great all-way stretch, making it an ideal choice for yoga pants, cardigans, plus structured knit tops and dresses.

Catacombs Collection
Hidden under the streets of Paris lie 200 miles of tunnels. These Catacombs, dating back to Roman times, were originally limestone quarries providing stones for Parisian architecture. Over the centuries, the underground mines were abandoned and forgotten. Then, in 1774, a series of basement walls collapsed from the weight of the mass grave behind it. Paris’ citizenry and leaders, already nervous that overcrowded and poorly maintained cemeteries were breeding grounds for diseases, searched for alternative burial places. Enter Police Chief Alexandre Lenoir, in charge of both mine inspections and cemetery closures. At his direction, under dark of night, wagons carted remains from Paris’ cemeteries to a section of renovated subterranean passageways, transforming the abandoned mines into a monumental sepulcher. It took two years to empty millions of remains from Parisian cemeteries into the Catacombs. At first, the Catacombs were a disorganized jumble of bones. But an 1810 Director of Mine Inspections transformed the caverns into a well-organized, even artistic, pattern of skulls and femurs, dappled with decorations he took from cemetery storage rooms. He essentially created a french version of the famous Roman catacombs which were also a solution to relocating old bones in the wake of overcrowding. To this day, you’ll find European churches decorated with artfully arranged skulls and skeletons. The Paris Catacombs house the bones of an estimated 6 million people spanning 600 years of Parisian death. The next time you visit Paris make sure to take the very popular one-mile walking tour of the Catacombs to view the intricate patterns of bony walls, columns, and sculptures.

Not feeling floral today? No problem. Catacombs Tribal sports a geometric design in neutral colors on a mediumweight rayon challis. Treat yourself to a sarong, sundress, updated caftan, or a tunic.
As a transitional wardrobe piece, whip up a quick knit top from Catacombs Paisley. We are listing this as a 57” wide fabric, even though it is technically 60” because the printing towards the selvages goes a bit awry. You will love the feel of this soft rib knit print as a top you can wear with the Brique or with Catacombs Sand, a 5 ounce European Linen. To retain the crispness, dry clean. But if you prefer a more casual vibe, toss it in the wash and it will soften the feel as well as tighten the weave while it shrinks down a bit, making it ideal for comfy beachcomber pants.

Haussmann Collection
Much of the reason Paris is considered the world’s most beautiful city is due to architect George-Eugene Haussmann, who was asked by Napoleon III in 1853 to make Paris the foremost city in the world, which he did. He started by installing a totally new water system that provided indoor plumbing, and a new sewer system to discharge the wastewater. He widened the boulevards and lined them with trees so there would be shade in the summer to encourage individuals, lovers, and families to stroll or enjoy aperitifs in one of the many outdoor cafés he envisioned lining the boulevards. Haussmann ordered that all buildings be built to a height of five stories with the fifth story angled 45-degrees, allowing more sunlight in to brighten the avenues. This continuity rid Paris of its architectural hodge-podge, something still plaguing the aesthetics of most large cities not overseen by a strong enlightened design committee. Haussmann created a new Metro system with magnificent modern train stations like the D’Orsay to service and wow the tourists he knew would want to visit Paris. With the architecture and the infrastructure in place, what was needed was a place to sit down and have a café au lait with a delicious pastry while enjoying the parade of beautiful fashion passing by. This gave birth to the outdoor cafés where one could sit for hours with a café espresso and not be bothered by an anxious waiter wanting to turn the table for more tips. So brilliant. Bravo Haussmann.

The centerpiece is Haussmann Jardin, an extra-wide, all-way stretch cotton/rayon blend jersey knit that is ideal for all types of knit tops. We gave you two choices for bottom-weights, both are from our Classic Ponte di Roma collection online and in our retail store. How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Couture Collection
We can’t write about Paris without listing some of the great fashion designers of the 20th century. In 1910, Jeanne Lavin introduced her modern Empire Waist dress, a nod to the Greek and Regency periods. During the Roaring ‘20s she disregarded the straight flapper dress by adding a layered tulle bouffant skirt to a dropped waist bodice. She favored soft-flowing fabrics like lace, organza, tulle, chiffon, and silk charmeuse. The austere creations of Coco Chanel were possibly inspired by the orphanage nuns who taught her to sew. In 1920 she gave fashion “The Little Black Dress,” which made black a fashion basic when previously it was reserved for mourning. In 1925 she introduced the Chanel Suit with its iconic collarless jacket and fitted skirt, often lined with the same fabric as the coordinating dress or blouse. After WWII, Christain Dior’s star rose when he upended the war’s fabric-conserving fashions and introduced the ultra-feminine “New Look”—bustier bodices, padded hips, cinched waists, and petticoats. His 1953 Spring collection was filled with flowery prints. In 1955, Dior introduced his iconic “ALine” skirts and dresses, a modern interpretation of the hoopskirt or pennier. Hubert de Givenchy teamed up with his mentor Balenciaga to introduce the “Sack Dress”—a garment without a waistline. By the ‘60s, he created shorter hemlines and straighter silhouettes and joined the ‘70s craze for “hot pants.” His famously chic clientele included Audrey Hepburn (costuming Breakfast at Tiffany’s among others), Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Wallis Simpson. To finish haute couture garments in style, no one equaled the artistry and imagination of François Lesage. “Embroidery is to haute couture what fireworks are to Bastille Day.” Top designers like Schiaparelli, Dior, Balmain, and Yves Saint Laurent, sought out Lesage to embellish their designs. His innovative materials included Murano glass, lapis lazuli, jade, pebbles, metal blades, and fish scales. One of his most famous jackets, Van Gogh’s Irises and Sunflowers, required 600 hours of work and included 250,000 sequins, 200,000 beads, and 270 yds of ribbon. In the early 1990s, the House of Lesage in Paris began teaching embroidery, and an early pupil was our Director of Vogue Fabrics Catalog Operations, Rogie Sussman.

Spark joy in your wardrobe with our next trio of textiles. Couture Flamant (that’s French for Flamingo) is our third classic ponte di Roma knit and this color is exclusive to our catalog. It has just the right amount of body and weight for making structured knit separates, like jackets and cardigans, knit slacks and skirts, princess seamed dresses and knit tops. It will make a great backdrop for Couture Exotique, a double-brushed ITY knit that’s alive with color and visual movement. Whether you go conservative with a knit top, or go bold and sew a dress as a statement piece, this soft knit fabric is a winner either way. We even matched up a navy viscose twill for you that matches the midnight navy accent in the print. We love the weight and drape of Couture Navy from the Bonnotto Group in Italy. Choose this for sewing elegant dresses, wide-legged pants, and kimono-style jackets.

Lumière Collection
The next time you watch a film, you can thank the Lumière brothers— Auguste (1862-1954) and Louis (1864-1948.) Raised by parents who ran a small photographic portrait studio, the brothers’ interests in all things mechanical led them to study at the largest technical school in Lyon. When their father’s business began failing, the boys saved it by automating production. They went on to patent a number of camerarelated inventions—several of which were improvements on other inventors’ designs. One of the most critical for motion pictures was the perforations you still see on the sides of film strips that allow the projector to advance the film. They also improved on and patented the cinématographe which let them record, develop, and project motion pictures. They made their earliest films between 1895 and 1905. Film historians consider their first commercial screening in 1895 of La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumière (Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory) as the birth of the movie industry. Their earliest works captured everyday French life at 16 frames per second. They are credited with creating the first newsreel as well as the first documentary - a four-part series on the Lyon Fire Department. They hired a film crew to go throughout Europe showing completed films as well as shoot new footage. Unfortunately, the brothers—so gifted in technology—felt movies were a novelty, saying “the cinema is an invention with no real future.” They lacked the vision required to see the potential brilliant future of film. Instead, they put their efforts into developing the first color-film process. Although their name faded from the cinema scene, it has resurfaced in Paris and Lyon. The Atelier des Lumières is the first all-digital art museum and cultural space in Paris and honors the Lumières contributions. Most recently, it was the venue for the projected-moving art of Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt. In 2009 the Lumière Film Festival began in Lyon, organized by the Institut Lumière, to celebrate the films of the past through “restored prints, retrospectives and tributes.”

This bright collection begins with Lumière Paisley (page 25), a dynamic printed cotton from Robert Kaufman’s fashion division. Choose this whenever a light to medium weight woven with body is called for. You can pair it with the following pink knit or the upcoming yellow linen blend, depending which direction you want to go with your color scheme. Lumière Cerise is extra-wide at 70”! Plus, it is quite a substantial cotton knit. Order enough for leggings, and you should be able to cut out a tank top or bandeau as well. The pink blends beautifully with all the prints in this collection.
Named in honor of the French springtime, Lumière Printemps is our second cotton lawn print in this catalog. Look at how lovely the pink petals fall against the sun-yellow cotton base. Stay cool and look sharp this summer in a breezy floral lawn top. You can also make a large neck scarf from the print to wear as an accent piece over a dress of Lumière Tucson. Choose this blend to sew a linen-look dress, shirt, skirt, slacks, or summer jacket. It takes embroidery supurbly.

In spring we sew for the warmer months ahead, while thoughts of pools, beaches, and clear skies abound. Louvre Collection
The most famous museum in the world began its existence as the 12th-century fortress of Philip Augustus. Parts of the original Medieval wall can be seen in the basement of the Louvre in the heart of Paris. Two hundred years later, King Charles V claimed the fortress as the official residence of the French Monarchy. In 1546, King Francis I remodeled the fortress into a Renaissance Palace, which is just a small portion of today’s museum, but work stopped when Louis XIV moved the monarchy to Versailles in 1678. The Louvre Palace became a depository for the art of the Royal families who continued to build out the palace. After the monarchy was overthrown during the French Revolution, the Louvre Palace was opened to the public for free on the weekends, allowing everyone the opportunity to view magnificent works - very egalitarian! It is reported that 25% of all paintings by Leonardo da Vinci are housed at the Louvre, including La Giaconda - the Mona Lisa. Other Important works include the very French Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix, the Code of the Hammurabi Babylonian bas relief codex, Caravaggio’s Death of the Virgin, and Ship of Fools by Hieronymus Bosch. The iconic and controversial glass pyramid entrance was added in the late 20th century by renowned architect I.M. Pei. Prepandemic, roughly 27,000 people would visit the museum per day! Thankfully all these people could spread out in the vast halls of the 652,300-square-foot museum. The Louvre earns additional income renting space for special events and to film crews shooting music videos and blockbuster movies.

Linen Lovers, get your orders in early! We stashed the first two fabrics in this collection in our Catalog Reserve to hide them from everyone at the warehouse and retail store. Linens have been a huge seller for us, even through the winter months, especially the two-tone cross-wovens. We are offering these linens at last year’s prices during the Subscriber Only shopping period, and they are not re-orderable. Louvre Citrine mixes a yellow warp with alternating turquoise and pale lime weft threads. Louvre Plum mingles indigo and pomegranate. Both look smashing with Louvre Motif, a surprisingly soft rayon jersey knit packed with wonderful colors in staggered medallions on navy blue.
