The Voorheesville Key Club Newsletter November 2016 Key Club was busy, as usual, all through the month of November. On the 2nd we held a meeting to begin preliminary plans for our annual Turkey Food Drive and to hear a representative from the Thirst Project speak. Road Warrior Drew spoke to Key Clubbers about the Thirst Project’s history, accomplishments, and future goals in an informative presentation. At its heart the Thirst Project strives “to end the global water crisis . . . by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause and build real water projects all over the world.” Doing this simple act—building wells—can eliminate the disease rate in African countries by up to 88%. So far the Thirst Project has given 280,000 people clean water in just seven years. We were lucky enough to have the Thirst Project speak at our school last year, and Key Club would like to continue supporting this great organization. Currently, the Thirst Project’s goal is to give all of Swaziland clean water in 2022, a project that will amount to over $50 million. They need our help to do this and our Key Club will help raise money over the service year, by collecting donations and water bottles. For those who missed the meeting or wish to know more about the project, visit their website (www.thirstproject.org) for more! The next week, from November 7th to 11th, was Key Club Week. Members were encouraged to do small acts of kindness each day. If you did any act

of kindness, remember to fill out an hours sheet and hand it in to Secretary Abby Goldfarb. To end the week, Key Clubbers gave out free popcorn and collected donations for the Thirst Project during lunch periods on November 10th. The 16th was our induction ceremony. Plans for the Turkey Food Drive were finalized before the induction began. Forty-two new members were called up to receive their induction materials and congratulated with a single clap as per LTC tradition. Afterwards, all members posed for the yearbook picture and celebrated with refreshments. On the 18th, a few Key Clubbers went to St. Matt’s Church after school to help pack food boxes for Thanksgiving. Thanks to those who did! We held our seventh annual Turkey Food Drive, to benefit the New Scotland Food Pantry, from November 7th to 22nd. This year, we decided to change it up a little bit and do a battle between the turkey veterans—Mrs. McTighe, Mrs. Levy, Mr. Gladd, Mr. Lawrence, Ms. Stoyle, and Mr. Young—and the newcomer, Principle Schmitz. With the encouragement of our daily morning announcements, Voorheesville students donated 345 food items in all. Principle

November 2016 Schmitz was declared to be the winner on November 23rd, having won over half of all the items donated. She got the honor of wearing our new turkey suit all day before Thanksgiving Break. Thank you to everyone, Key Club member or not, who donated a food item. You helped make a difference this holiday season! As always, Key Club would like to thank everyone who volunteered and came to our meetings this month. Thank you to everyone who helped out with the induction ceremony and welcome again to our official new members!
