Welcome to Bentonville
As Chair of the Greater Bentonville Area Chamber of Commerce and on behalf of our Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Bentonville area and to Northwest Arkansas – an incredibly special place we live, work, play and love to call home.
We welcome you, and 30 new residents a day from across the country and around the world. That’s right, Northwest Arkansas adds 30 new residents a day! This is a place that offers affordable quality of life and an intentional approach to economic development, created by our community and inspired by the legacy of the region’s most well-known entrepreneurs. Sam Walton himself served as Chair of our Chamber Board of Directors in 1958.
The Greater Bentonville area is a place where you’ll find thoughtful growth, a knowledge-based economy, and a welcoming environment with an appreciation of new people and cultures, as well as new companies and organizations. This year, we celebrate Bentonville’s 150th Anniversary! We have a rich history, with a phenomenal story to tell, and we’re just getting started. Our dynamism creates an environment that embraces and appreciates who we are but challenges us to always improve and be better. The Chamber celebrates that spirit, charting the course to an ever-greater Bentonville through connection, accessibility, and collaborative leadership.
It was this same aspirational culture that brought me here. At a time when our business community was beginning to realize the need to have its own distinctive voice represented at our state and nation’s capitols, I was recruited as a U.S. Senate staffer to help better define and amplify that voice. On behalf of the Northwest Arkansas Council and the NWA Chambers, I developed a Government Affairs initiative and crafted the first Northwest Arkansas Legislative Agenda.
That effort helped promote a strong local economy, encompassing education and workforce training, economic development, infrastructure, healthcare, and other fundamental quality of life assets that make communities thrive. In a notable example of successful regional collaboration, the Greater Bentonville Area Chamber of Commerce continues to advance those principles, alongside Northwest Arkansas’ other excellent Chambers.
My work rooted me in Northwest Arkansas, and I soon knew that I wanted to build a life here – one with a career focused on quality of life and economic development, moving our region and state forward for the people who matter the most, my family. Our children are growing up in this fun, dynamic community with ease of access to the arts, culture, trails, and the great outdoors. And they are being educated by
Inset,
our nationally ranked Bentonville School District as it leads the state in learning through innovation, collaboration, and dedication.
More and more, I experience how happy other people are in making the decision to move and build their life here, too. I had the humbling honor of keynoting last year’s Northwest Arkansas Business Journal 40 Under 40 event, recognizing a class of 40 up-and-coming professionals younger than 40 years old. Of the honorees, only 13 of the 40 were native Arkansans. Their love, engagement, and commitment to our community – and to Arkansas – was impressive and inspiring. What a great reminder that Northwest Arkansas truly is the premier place to build not only a business, but a life.
We welcome and invite you to join us. The Greater Bentonville Chamber is your concierge connection to the community. We are a 1100-member strong organization that helps drive job creation, community experiences, and meaningful change to move Bentonville forward for all. Our professional staff will connect and position you and your business at the intersection of economy and community. Our services and programs convene, connect, and accelerate business. Programs and events like the Northwest Arkansas Tech Summit, BWC Assemble, WalStreet Speaker Series, Build Bentonville lunches, and entrepreneurial and startup resourcing, are all designed to connect and support you.
I hope to meet you at one of many programs the Chamber is offering in 2023!
Until then, I invite you to call or visit your Chamber team for even more ways to get engaged in the Greater Bentonville Area. It is a special place we live, work, play and love to call home.
On behalf of the Chamber, we look forward to connecting and serving you soon,

Downtown Attractions
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has welcomed over six million visitors with free general admission since it opened in 2011. Philanthropist and arts patron Alice Walton brought to life her vision to provide access to a diverse collection of masterworks from early American to contemporary times, and a revolving roster of traveling exhibitions.
Connected to the downtown square by the Art Trail, the museum is named for the nearby Crystal Spring and the bridge-based construction of the building, designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Five miles of trails wind through the museum grounds, providing access to creek-fed ponds, sculpture gardens, outdoor art installations and the BachmanWilson House – a rare Frank Lloyd Wright designed home.
Nestled in a wooded valley, the stunning architectural structure that is the museum itself houses Eleven, a gourmet restaurant, the museum store, and a permanent collection of American art that includes iconic works such as Rosie the Riveter by Norman Rockwell, Our Town by Kerry James Marshall, Dolly Parton by Andy Warhol and Kindred Spirits by Asher B. Durand. Major temporary exhibitions for 2023 include: Fashioning America: Grit to Glamour, Diego Rivera’s America,
Architecture at Home, Listening Forest, and more to be announced (visit crystalbridges.org for exhibition dates).
Trails throughout the museum’s 120-acre setting take guests past Ozark landscapes, natural springs and art installations such as James Turrell’s Skyspace: The Way of Color, a domed-ceiling structure that gives colorand-light enhanced sky views at sunrise and sunset. Crystal Bridges’ satellite contemporary art space, the Momentary, opened in 2020 featuring visual, performance and culinary art, artist-inresidence programs, music festivals and more. See more on page 20.

The Walmart Museum, including Walton’s 5&10 and The Spark Café, are closed while they undergo an extensive renovation through Spring 2024. During the renovation, visitors may visit the museum's temporary home at The Walmart Museum Heritage Lab at the nearby Ledger Building, 240 S. Main St.
Located just off the northeast corner of the downtown square, a short walk from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, 21c Museum Hotel is a boutique hotel and contemporary art museum, also home to the award-winning restaurant The Hive. The 104-room hotel boasts 12,000 square feet of contemporary art space with rotating curated exhibitions, site-specific multimedia installations and other cultural programming. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is creating a bikeable, walkable campus through the design of its new home office under construction near Downtown Bentonville. Walmart’s new headquarters will bring associates together in the state-of-the-art campus, weaving in the natural health and beauty of the area, accelerating the digital transformation of the world’s largest retailer and attracting the next generation of talent.
The 350-acre campus is bordered by Central Avenue on the north, 14th Street on the south, J Street on the west and Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway on the east, with 8th Street running through the middle. With 2022 having been the “year of bricks and sticks,” vertical construction of the first office buildings and amenity buildings is now well underway, with a goal of opening in phases through 2025. The home office campus will have four quadrants, or neighborhoods, that are interconnected by the Razorback Regional Greenway, shaded walking paths, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings.
The new headquarters will make it easy for associates to commute to work by bicycle. Each neighborhood will have bike storage, showers and changing rooms. Campus bikes will be available for associates to ride between buildings or to and from their vehicles.
The high-efficiency campus will create a winning work environment that drives efficiency and productivity through connected buildings and teams, and fosters creativity, speed and transparency. Smart building design with energyefficient lighting and HVAC systems will incorporate high performance and regionally sourced materials, including mass timber construction. Solar panels will be affixed to select buildings and parking decks.
A food hall in the heart of campus will offer flexible space for associates to connect with fellow colleagues while enjoying creative, fresh and healthy food options. Plans call for a welcome center, a hotel for company associates visiting from all over the world and a childcare center serving associates.

Industry leaders and mountain bicyclists are calling Bentonville a mountain bike “mecca” and “Disneyland,” where only a block from downtown is access to 40+ miles of urban trails and hundreds more of an unrivaled regional trail network.
“It’s true that Bentonville has become the new Mountain Biking Capital of the World,” Bentonville Mayor Stephanie Orman said. “Over the past decade, we’ve built a reputation among mountain biking enthusiasts and athletes as the premier global destination for the sport. We’re the heart of the trailhead in the Ozarks, and headquarters to the most innovative mountain bike trail designs built anywhere.”
The local economy has embraced Bentonville’s role as a leader in mountain biking tourism, and developed and attracted a number of quality bike shops, rental and retail vendors, bike guides and manufacturers, along with professional riders and outdoor enthusiasts. Community Profile & Newcomer Info
Welcome to Benton County! Here is some important information about the area and available services that you’ll need as a newcomer.
A Rich Heritage
In 1837, a site was designated as the county seat for Benton County, named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. senator from Missouri who was responsible for
helping Arkansas attain statehood in 1836. Bentonville was the first town established in Benton County in 1873, and today continues to be the seat of county government. The downtown square quickly became the place for commerce and entertainment. By the end of the Civil War, apples put Benton County on the map. In 1901, Benton County was the largest apple-producing county in the nation with more than 300 varieties coming just from Bentonville alone. In 1921, large-scale broiler chicken production began and the county was ranked as the largest eggproducing county in Arkansas. The 1930s brought continued growth for the poultry and dairy industry. In 1950, Sam Walton opened Walton’s 5&10 on the Bentonville Square. Bentonville has continued to grow into a thriving business and cultural center, and is home to the headquarters of Walmart Stores, Inc., the largest private employer and retailer in the world, ranked No. 1
on the Fortune 500 list for the previous eight years in a row.
Present Day
Bentonville ranked as the nation’s fifth fastest growing city in 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city grew by a rate of 10 additional residents per day in a calendar year. So what has led to this unprecedented growth? The answer is incredible quality-of-life investments that have transformed Bentonville, drawing
BENTONVILLE RANKED AS THE NATION’S FIFTH FASTEST GROWING CITY IN 2020
national and international attention over the last decade. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which opened in 2011, the Scott Family Amazeum (2015) and the Momentary (2020) are some of the best examples of these investments. Unique, community-minded restaurants, breweries and lodging options have followed, including 21c Museum Hotel, Thaden Field and 8th Street Market, opening their doors to add character and charm to the local ecosystem. Walmart, along with its many supporting suppliers and vendors operating in the area, is still the lead economic driver in Bentonville, but equally as relevant in today’s mobile workforce economy are the new focus areas: bikes, art, culinary and aviation. All of these amenities combined have culminated to have an astonishing impact on the city.
