Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora Koutou I write this on a beautifully clear morning on which I attended two workshops; both very engaging. Each for different reasons . The first was a Tradie breakfast - 6am start in a very chilly carpark at Waghorn Builders in Kaiapoi. Over 100 Tradies from a range of local companies joined over a good kiwi breakfast BBQ to hear a talk on suicide and wellbeing. Looking around the lines of flouro vests and sweaters, the level of engagement was incredible. So many acknowledging that they were struggling. Almost unanimous nods at the stories of negative self talk and self doubt. In conversations afterward, I heard more than one account from people who had suffered multiple loss through suicides of much loved men. Congratulations to Waghorns for taking up the mantle to encourage men to get talking and seek support. The second workshop was COGS (Community Operations Grant Scheme). Discussion around the room centred on the importance of people being safe, included, empowered and supported in communities that are welcoming, vibrant and accessible. It was heartening that our current priorities continue to align with those for the groups that support local residents. It was also good to see such broad representation

from community groups, clubs and agencies, and a willingness to work together for our communities. As the season changes and the autumn leaves start to fall, our team is in planning mode, collectively, individually and with our networks. Time to reflect on the previous year’s achievements and challenges. Personally, I enjoy the slightly shorter evenings and cooler mornings as an opportunity to slow things down a bit. Less watering, earlier nights, with a good book to help me switch off. Stunning skies, a bounty of produce in the garden and the butterflies returning to the trees in Victoria Park. Certainly a time to reflect and count our blessings. Ka hari Aranga Happy Easter.

Community Profile

Anna Paterson

Community Connections Coordinator I live in Rangiora with my husband and three children, after moving from Southland in 2016. We love living in North Canterbury and find the community exceptionally welcoming. I have worked with Waimakariri Libraries since 2017, and have recently taken on the role of Community Connections Coordinator. This role is funded by the New Zealand Libraries Partnership Programme which was set up as part of the COVID-19 recovery.

community events is an exciting part of the role. Outreach to non-library users is one of the initiatives I will be working on. Community needs are forever changing, and the library strives to ensure everyone’s needs are met. My personal time is taken up with my family and managing our two dogs, and exploring our beautiful Waimakariri.

I love libraries and in my new role I am able to spread the word of libraries and what they can offer the community. I bring to the role experience working in customer facing roles, within several community sectors.

I would be more than happy to talk to you or your community group, about how the library could assist you. Email: anna.paterson@wmk.govt.nz or 03 311 8901 Monday to Friday 8.30am-5pm, and work one day a week at Kaiapoi Library.

Sarah Stenhouse

Digital Inclusion Coordinator I live in Waikuku Beach with my husband and daughter and have lived in our district for the past 16 years. I am originally from Australia and I enjoy getting out and about in our beautiful environment, which is a big contrast to my previous life in inner city Melbourne. We have a few small paddocks which has allowed us to have an assortment of animals, and I love living within easy access to the beach, river and mountains. I have worked in libraries for all of my working life and with Waimakariri Libraries since 2014. In my new role I will be working to increase awareness of the digital services our libraries offer and support our community to use digital tools to enhance

their lives. This term we have had classes in digital banking, smart phones and email which have been well attended, as well as offering Book-a-librarian and Tech Help drop in sessions in our libraries. If you would like to find out more about my role or have any ideas on assistance your community group would like in the area of digital skills, please feel free to contact me on 03 311 8901 or via email sarah.stenhouse@wmk.govt.nz Monday to Friday 8.30am-5pm, and work one day a week at Kaiapoi Library.

6 Tūhaitara Coastal Park Kia ora, my name is Adele Jackson, I am the new Ranger for Education and Visitor Services for Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust. I feel extremely fortunate to be working in such a wonderful location helping to restore and protect the coastal and wetland ecosystems of this culturally significant site. In the last couple of weeks, we have enjoyed school group visits from Kaiapoi, Woodend, Rangiora, Riccarton and Pegasus. To celebrate NZ Seaweek we just had to go to the beach! We discussed the connections between Antarctic ice and sea levels around Aotearoa New Zealand in a warming climate. Then we looked at coastal protection and importance of re-establishing Spinifex and Pīngao on the dunes. In other news, we have fixed the dates for the Autumn/Winter Tūhaitara Coastal Park tree planting sessions. Tree planting is a fantastic way to contribute to ensuring the coastal park is restored and protected for

future generations to enjoy. To begin to rehabilitate the area affected by the bush fire earlier in the year, two of the sessions will be in the Pines Beach area. All sessions run from 10am-1pm. Come for as little or long as you can. The team and I look forward to meeting you there. Saturday 17 April Meeting point: Tiritiri Moana Drive, Pegasus Wednesday 12 May Meeting point: Tiritiri Moana Drive, Pegasus Saturday 22 May Meeting point: Batten Grove, Pines Beach Saturday 12 June Meeting point: Entry into the park at the end of Tiritiri Moana Drive, Pegasus. Staff will be at the gate entrance to direct you. Saturday 4 September Meeting point: Batten Grove, Pines Beach

Tamariki from St Joseph’s School, Rangiora identified the various sand dune plant species at Woodend Beach and made careful observations of the plants and their seeds.

Tree planting season starts in April. Come along with friends or family to make history by planting the future.

9 Age Friendly Update Kia ora Koutou What a year we are having and it is only March. Two COVID Lockdowns, earthquakes and tsunami warnings in the north. Ten years on and word of earthquakes anywhere brings a multitude of reactions from us Cantabrians. Here in Waimakariri we have had fires at Pine’s Beach and protests over the proposed quarry at the Rangiora Racecourse. At the last Age-friendly Advisory Group meeting we heard that our housing sub-group are focused on the shortage of suitable housing in the district as our population continues to rise, particularly in the older age group. According to Statistics NZ nearly a quarter of NZers will be over the age of 65 by 2034; 30% of people in Waimakariri will be over 65 by 2028. We just need to look in our local papers to see what is going on in the community. The Council has a whole page towards the back of The Northern Outlook and the North Canterbury News. The Draft Long Term Plan is now open for comment; closing date 12 April. Specifically, they want feedback on three things: New community facilities for Pegasus and Ravenswood, upgrades to the Rangiora Library and civic area, parking in Rangiora. As residents we have the right to make submissions on anything and we are seeing this currently with the protests about the proposed quarry at the Racecourse. Commissioners have been appointed and the hearing is set to take place in May.

Our Mayor Dan Gordon assures us that people are at the centre of all the Council do. We are listened to. For more information go to waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk or phone 0800 965 468. You might like to meet with friends and neighbours and put in submissions on the Long Term Plan at the same time as having a social get-together. This all fits with the Waimakariri Age-friendly Plan defined by the Office for Seniors as “An age-friendly community is a place where you can stay connected, healthy, active and respected whatever your age”.

Haere ora Haere pai (Go with wellness, go with care) Joanne Gumbrell Chair, Waimakariri Age-friendly Advisory Group

10 The Accessibility Strategy – We Would Like to Know What You Think “Towards an Inclusive Environment” is the name of the Waimakariri Accessibility Strategy 2017-2021. Currently a survey is being undertaken to find out whether the Accessibility Strategy is working for people. The focus is on people with lived experience, who are residents or visitors to our District. We have printed copies of the survey available at Council Service Centres and libraries, plus an online form which can be emailed back.

Whilst this survey is underway, Council is undertaking its own reporting regards progress implementing this Strategy, across the whole of Council. After the information is gathered, we can report findings to Council and the wider community. The reviews will also contribute to the Accessibility Strategy update to be undertaken in the 2021-22 business year by the Policy Team. For further information, please contact Madeleine Burdon

The closing date is 5pm Friday 30 April 2021.

Age-friendly Community Facilitator

We realise that some people will need assistance to fill in the survey, in which case responses could be written in by a carer/ family member.

madeleine.burdon@wmk.govt.nz or

We are really looking forward to receiving feedback – when it is collated we will have a clear picture of how Council is doing, and where we can improve.

Rangiora Social Outings Group Age Concern is starting a regular social outing group in Rangiora for people over 65 who live in their own home and would enjoy more company. You will need to be able to transfer independently on and off our minibus. Donation: Gold coin. You will need to pay for your own morning or afternoon tea at the café. Contact Katie on 03 331 7801 or Debbie on 03 331 7814 if keen to find out more.

11 Suggestions on How to Stay Warm and Keep Power Bills Low Economical and productive settings for your heat pump: 1. Set the controls to HEAT only in winter. If you choose to cool in summer, use COOL only. 2. Set the fan speed to AUTO. 3. Set the temperature to heat to heat between 19 & 22 degrees, depending on your comfort level. 4. When you go out for long periods, switch the heat pump right down or off. 5. Keep the filters on the indoor and outdoor fixtures clear and free of blockages. Economical settings and use of an heater (preferably NOT a free standing gas heater!): 1. Set the controls to 21 to 22 degrees Centigrade: overheating results in energy waste. 2. Close off the room you are heating to retain heat. 3. Switch off the heater if you plan to be out for more than half an hour (don’t ‘heat the street’). 4. Ensure that there is air flow around the heater. To reduce condensation in your home: 1. Open the doors at least once a day for around 15 minutes to give your home a good airing and reduce humidity levels. 2. Use a lid on pots whilst cooking and use the extractor fan whilst cooking. 3. Dry clothing outdoors or in a tumble drier vented to the outside. 4. After showering, leave the extractor fan in the bathroom on for at least 15 minutes. To reduce power use without affecting your comfort levels: 1. Switch off little red lights! Each one uses at least 1 watt/hour or 4 kWh of energy a year. This is a tiny amount of energy – but you may be surprised at how many little red lights there are! 2. Switch off transformers: these you will find on cell phone plugs, laptops, Play Stations, computer speakers. Many of them will continue to operate even though the battery is fully charged. You can feel if they are wasting energy by checking for heat. 3. Use only one refrigerator. If you have a spare refrigerator it uses at least 1 kWh a day – or at least $100 a year in power that could rather heat your home. 4. Close the curtains at sundown to reduce heat loss through windows. 5. Get rid of draughts by blocking off gaps, using a door stop, shutting windows tightly. Not sure? Ask us. We are pleased to announce the launch of a comprehensive new website aimed at supporting tenant advocacy – Aratohu Tenant Advocacy. The Aratohu provides an in-depth look at the rights and responsibilities of tenants. The development of this website has been led by Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand (CABNZ), as part of the Tenant Advocates Network (TAN), a national group of organisations involved in tenant advocacy. This resource is intended to provide a guided pathway to navigate through renting issues so that tenants know their rights, can feel more empowered to act on them, and can take positive steps toward positive housing outcomes. The website is aimed primarily at people in advocacy roles but can also be used by tenants for self-advocacy. We encourage you to have a look at the site: tenant.aratohu.nz Remember, CAB can help you with tenancy matters and anything else you would like information about or support with. Our opening hours are 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. Youth and Porn : Hearing from NZ Rangatahi Presented by : Henry Talbot, Classification Office, Ria Schroder and Sarah Wylie, The Collaborative Trust In 2018, the Classification Office began a three part research programme with Colmar Brunton and The Collaborative Trust to truly understand pornography from a youth perspective, and to find out what might make a real difference to our rangatahi. Of upmost importance in this research programme are the voices of young people. This work has resulted in three key reports and a number of instructive and interactive resources to create further conversation about youth and porn in Aotearoa. This presentation provides an overview of this programme of research, highlighting key findings from all three studies and discusses how these findings can be used to ensure we are all better informed and better placed to support rangatahi.

Understanding and Responding to Self Harm and Suicide in Young People Tuesday 13 April 9.30am —12.30pm

Self-harm and suicide are major issues amongst New Zealand young people. Recent studies suggest up to one third of teenagers have tried self-harm.
