What’s in this Chatter edition

Greetings from the Editor

The good folks on the front cover gave of their time across three evenings to promote volunteering and to connect with potential volunteers. Community members came in with a willingness to get involved, to help out and to connect, and many a meaningful conversation was had. If you are interested in volunteering, you can find many and varied opportunities listed in the Waimakariri Volunteer Directory on the Council website.

This month there will be a fantastic parenting workshop, part of the “Raising the Next Generation with Confidence” series. The focus will be on how good nutrition can support mental health. Guest speaker Dr Julia Rucklidge is co-author of ‘The Better Brain’.

Continuing the youth theme, North Canterbury Youth Futures is hosting a Business Breakfast on 30 April featuring celebrity economist Brad Olsen. Business leaders can connect and talk about how to shape and nurture young talent for the future workforce.

What makes an event successful? The Community Team will be facilitating Kia Rite Hoea workshops on event management.

With the support of Recreation Aotearoa, this course provides an excellent toolkit for project management and running a successful event, be it for sports, cultural events or fundraising.

We are now able to share very exciting news about a new offering from the Council’s Community Team, the Mobile Community Hub! This van can be hired by charitable, not for profit groups delivering social good e.g. support services or connecting with vulnerable community members. The van is equipped with a fridge, freezer, sink and BBQ. But it is really about what happens on the outside –connecting with the community. Finally a reminder to connect. You need to boost your own wellbeing. There are many caring community support organisations and groups ready and equipped to help, visit nextsteps.org.nz to find out more.

Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!

It is with great sadness that we farewell Nick Chapman, who has done the utmost incredible job progressing Tūhaitara Park in many areas and facilitating the advancement to the next stages of development. The trust is looking for a new general manager who is willing to build on what Greg and Nick dedicated so much time and energy towards. If you would like to express your interest in being part of our team, you can apply for the role on our website under the employment tab or type the following link into your search browser:

tuhaitarapark.org.nz/apply

Meet the team

While we await our new general manager, Deane will take over as the interim General Manager. Deane has been and continues to be an integral part of our team, possessing

the skills and knowledge necessary to lead the park forward. Additionally, Deane is our go-to maintenance guy for anything within the park, from creating the biota nodes, maintaining the tracks, and fixing fences to almost anything else you can think of.

Murray and Nickolai are also two essential members of our team who contribute hugely to the maintenance side of things, but both are unfortunately off on ACC at the moment. Hopefully, they will both make a speedy recovery.

As we enter planting season, you will see Rex out and about planting; he is our mowing and planting superstar and the team’s longest-serving member!

Emily has expanded her role in the park’s funding sector, which includes many things, from grant proposals to securing

funding and creating progress reports to help us continue our work. Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust is a charitable trust that relies solely on donations and funds at present, and without Emily doing the amazing stuff she does behind the scenes (alongside her full-time master’s studies!!) doing the Mahi around the park would be more challenging for the team. With a Bachelor of Science in biological, environmental and geographical sciences, Emily provides a diverse and marvellous array of knowledge.

When Emily and Mikaela (role covered in March entry) have a little spare time in their new roles, they also continue to help around the park with maintenance, planting, pest control and data collection, among many other things.

Additionally, school groups are doing an incredible job contributing to the broader goals within the park; Kaiapoi North School is moving on to its 2nd node, whilst other school groups are progressing well with their first nodes!

The insect hotels are going up! Spot one at the pā harakeke, another in Pegasus, designed by Pegasus Bay school students and finally, one at Pines Beach, created by Kaiapoi North School students.

VOLUNTEER VISITORS NEEDED

Could you spare a little time to become a volunteer visitor?

Many older people in your community are lonely and isolated as they receive few or no regular visitors. Age Concern Canterbury’s Visiting Service helps reduce the loneliness by providing friendship and companionship through a volunteer visitor.

We provide full training and support and ask that you commit for at least 12 months, one hour per week.

If you’d like to make a real difference to an older person’s life please contact Rebecca or Peter at Age Concern Canterbury on 366 0903.

Meet Sharnika (Little) and Deanne (Big), our latest community-based match and Brittany (Little) and Emily (Big), our latest school-based match! Sharnika and Deanne spent their first mentoring session enjoying a hot chocolate and brainstorming activities they would like to do together throughout the year. With a mutual love of animals, especially horses, we think a lot of their time will be spent in the great outdoors. New mentor Emily will visit Brittany for one hour, once a week, during the school term and with the gals keen to get stuck into some baking, and arts and crafts projects, we can’t wait to see some of their creations.

CAB has launched two exciting new youth-focused projects.

The new CAB website for young people contains information about many of the key issues for youth embarking on those ‘firsts’ in adult life – starting tertiary study, getting a job, going flatting, buying a car, getting ID and more. The site is for helping young people know their rights and responsibilities, and for linking them to the CAB service when they need help from a real person. If you’re a young person, or you have a young person in your whānau, we invite you to check out the CAB Youth website at youth.cab.org.nz/

The CAB youth engagement report is based on the enquiries young people are bringing to the CAB. In the past year, the CAB throughout the motu helped around 5,000 people under the age of 25 with information, advice and support.

The report reveals the most common issues for which young people are seeking the

Land of the Long Long Drive

Balcairn Hall, Friday 19 April – 1.30pm

This show for the whole family is the third tour from the 2024 stable of touring artists with Arts On Tour NZ. And it will be a long long drive of over 6000 kilometers for the cast and crew of the company.

And the story goes….

Wētā, Tuna and Kārearea are mates of Gary the Glowworm, and are traveling to attend his rave in the cave birthday party. The friends face a number of trials on the road, and learn that despite their differences, they can achieve their goals by working together! Land of the Long Long Drive is a story that has been

“Loved by...audience[s] from tots to grandparents” (Deborah Rea, Theatreview).

A tale for Kiwi kids, featuring iconic NZ creatures, landscapes and fresh Waiata by NZ singer-songwriter Benny Tipene.

Winner of the 3–8-year-old section of Playmarket’s Plays for the Young Competition, Land of the Long Long Drive brings you a laugh out loud, inspiring adventure of three unlikely heroes.

Do you Qualify for a Rates Rebate?

You Can Claim up to $750 Towards Your Rates

If you have not claimed a rates rebate since July 2023, here’s how to find out if you qualify.

The Rates Rebate Scheme provides up to $750 for low income households paying rates for the home they were living in on 1 July 2023. The rebate is based on your gross household income for the tax year ending on 31 March 2023 and is for the 2023/24 rates year.

If you hold a licence to occupy agreement in a retirement village you may also qualify for a rates rebate. Speak to your retirement village operator.

• Use total annual rates

• You need to bring accurate information about your gross household income for the tax year ended 31 March 2023.
