Greetings
from the Editor Kia ora koutou
It’s that time of year again! The tree has been assembled on the Council lawn, local businesses are rolling out the Christmas music and there’s a lovely lady painting Christmassy designs on the shop fronts. The yuletide season in the Waimakariri has arrived! This time of year is rather special. However, it’s important to remember that this year it will be more challenging for some and to keep the love and hope of the Christmas message at the forefront of our interactions with others - even when their views and actions may not align with our own. Let’s let “peace on earth and goodwill to all” be the resounding philosophy in this wonderful District of ours! (As an interesting aside, did you know that one of our town’s names, “Rangiora” means “Good weather after a bad spell, or Invalid recovering from sickness, or Day of peace or health?” I’ve always thought of that as rather rather lovely - rather hopeful!) The lead up to Christmas can make life a little crazy, I reckon. It is hard not to get caught up in the rush, the shopping and the work pressure that makes everything terribly urgent, as if the world is to end on Christmas Day!
It’s worth taking the time to ‘just breathe!’ and giving ourselves permission to change gear and focus on the things that really bring joy to ourselves (and others). Perhaps invite someone new to the table, so they’re not sitting at home alone. Give home made presents, or donate to a charity (see the One Sista 2 Anotha project on p7). Throw a picnic together and head to the beach; or to the top of a hill! Volunteer! Spend less time in the kitchen and more time on the couch or in a chair talking and listening - really enjoying the people around you. However you do it, I hope that you have a special Christmas and a well earned break! - and don’t forget to pop into the Council Foyer and have a look at the fabulous Christmas Tree Festival! Ngā manaakitanga o te kirihimete ki runga ia koe me tō whānau. The blessings of Christmas on you and your family.
Tessa

At its worst, severe housing deprivation has significant consequences for older people. They may only have access to substandard accommodation, or none at all.
Age Friendly Update Kia ora Koutou I belong to U3A and go to one of their interest groups, Singing for Health. About 20 of us sing old songs and learn about the history of them. You don’t have to be a singer to join - it is about doing something with others and having fun. Many in the group are now single again and coming together is helping with the growing need for social connection. Social media has sent me a message about an Age Concern initiative “Light Up Loneliness - Take action to end loneliness across Aotearoa by joining the movement at letsendloneliness.co.nz”. Here in Waimakariri, Presbyterian Support USI have a volunteer visitor scheme. If you would like to be a volunteer visitor or have someone visit you, phone Roni on 03 261 2889. The Office for Seniors has concerns about housing: “For a small but growing number of older people, accessing secure, safe and affordable long-term housing can present a challenge. This affects the wider financial wellbeing of people for whom NZ Super is their primary source of income. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of people aged 65+ who receive the accommodation supplement increased by approximately 12,000 – totalling 127,522 in March 2021.”
Age-friendly Waimakariri have a housing sub-group. An enthusiastic group of local people are looking to establish an Abbeyfield House - this comprises 12-14 studio units for single people over the age of 65, with a communal kitchen, dining and living area, a garden plus a live-in housekeeper who cooks meals. Residents eat together and socialise as much as they wish. It is like flatting for older people. This also helps with the housing crisis we have in Aotearoa as it frees up houses for others. If you would like to be involved, contact Valda Reveley 027 2719 961. In the meantime, Nga Mihi Kirihimete me te tau hou. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Maybe there is a lonely person living near you who would love an invitation to join you for a visit, a meal or an outing. Waimakariri Access Group
Council is currently reviewing its Accessibility Strategy after an audit of progress on its action plan to 2021. The Access Group has been instrumental in bringing issues to Council’s notice, as well as implementing its own plan. They recently held their AGM at Kaiapoi and have new committee members from both provider organsiations and residents with lived experience from the Waimakariri community.
Accessibility Update In early November members of the Waimakariri Access Group assisted with Council staff undertaking accessibility training. The focus of this was mainly on the built environment, utilising a range of mobility aids and goggles which severely limit vision. The training is now provided by a coalition of barrier free accredited groups under the auspices of CCS Disability Action. The session began with a series of photos highlighting spaces around the District, with both the positives and the challenges in terms of being barrier free. Following that, staff were given a range of mobility options or the vision goggles to chose from, as they took to the streets of Rangiora, with a helper. As expected, the actual experience of having restricted vision or mobility, really brought home to participants how difficult it can be to nagivate parts of our community. The evaluation from staff who particpated across Council units will be shared with management to help with further training opportunities. Staff also made recommendations about what else would be helpful to them in their respective roles, for example checklists and handbooks. The feedback also noted their new awareness about improvements that can be made to enhance a barrier free more inclusive District.

6 Update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park November has been a month gearing up for a busy summer season. We’ve welcomed four new summer rangers into our team, with a few more still to come on board. Daniel and David joined us after recently completing a course with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. Emily and Zita are undergraduate environmental science and geography students from the University of Canterbury. With a larger team in place we are getting on top of keeping down the grassy and woody weeds that seem to be growing faster than ever. Our work has concentrated on brush-cutting and releasing our young plants. Releasing plants ensures that they get the sunlight and space that they need to thrive. You will find our team will be visible out and about in the park and along the beach throughout the summer ensuring the safety of our wildlife and our visitors. We look forward to seeing you - do stop for a chat when you see us! Remember, if you’re out

Plant releasing with your dog, it must be kept on a lead along the Tūtaepatu Trail and around the wetlands. On other trails and on the beach your dog must be kept close to you and under control. This ensures the safety of wildlife and the safety of your dog. 14 Shining a Light on Child and Youth Mental Health Māia Health Foundation is on a mission to raise funds for a modern, fit-for-purpose mental health outpatient facility for children and young people in Canterbury. We need your help to make it better for people like Otty. Otty was an over-achiever. Happy, surrounded by friends, captain of the football and basketball teams, a star student. And then everything fell apart. “It was about a year after the earthquakes that my anxiety kicked off. I couldn’t switch off at school or at home and I couldn’t sleep. That’s when I was first referred to Canterbury’s child and youth mental health service,” she says. Otty was treated in the outdated facilities at The Princess Margaret Hospital and Hillmorton sites. “It almost feels like a prison – everything’s very dark and you feel like you’re going to get trapped. It doesn’t fill you with motivation to get better. But the staff are amazing – it was 110% them that helped me.” Learn more about the game-changing difference a modern, fit-for-purpose facility will make for rangatahi and their whānau >>https://www.maiahealth.org.nz/ stories/our-stories/ottys-story/ Join us to help raise $300,000 by Christmas. Kuīni chatbot to launch on Monday 18 October 2021 Te Hiringa Hauora | Health Promotion Agency is excited to let you know about the launch of Kuīni. Kuīni is a chatbot that has been created as a digital support tool to help people, particularly wahine, aged 18 to 34, to be more successful in their cold turkey or supported attempts to quit smoking. Kuīni is delivered through Facebook messenger and has been designed to send daily messages, distractions and encouragements to help users on their quitting journey over a 30 day period. Features of Kuīni include tips and facts for quitting, a smoking cost calculator, quizzes, 101 things to do (other than smoking) and craving countdown videos. The initial digital marketing campaign will go live from Monday 18 October to Friday 26 November. The results from this will inform the second round of marketing activity, which is most likely to go live in early 2022. From Monday 18 October, more information about the campaign can be found here.
As chatbots are relatively new across the international stop smoking system, we will be actively asking participants for feedback so we can assess its impact and relevance for Aotearoa New Zealand. From Monday 18 October, more information can be found on the QuitStrong website, or you can try Kuīni out for yourself here. The development of Kuīni has been a collaborative effort involving a range of passionate contributors and supporters, including wahine/wāhine rānei. Te Hiringa Hauora would like to thank and acknowledge all of those who have contributed to this project.
