Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora Koutou The Christmas music has started in all the shops. The Council Christmas Tree is about to be erected on the front lawn and the Soroptomists are getting ready to adorn the whole Council lobby with Christmas Trees, decorated by local community groups, organisations and businesses. Each year as I peruse the entries in the Christmas Tree Festival, I wonder if those wonderful volunteers know how much of a blessing it is. People coming in to pay the rates, check up on a building permit, often stressed and tired at this time of year, nearly always stop to marvel at the wonderful array, or to place a star on the remembrance tree. If we’re not careful, Christmas can become more about stress and irritation than what it is meant to be. The nativity message of goodwill, hope and joy is too often lost in the rush of life and the need to have everything, and have everything perfect. Perhaps it’s time to pause. Focus more on the things that matter. Think about making your day open to someone who might otherwise be alone. The recession can bite at this time of year. People naturally want to treat their family to the frills of Christmas, but when you’re struggling financially, that can leave little

left to feed the family in the subsequent weeks. Food banks are stretched and will be even more so after Christmas. Please consider adding a few extra items to your grocery cart and putting them in the donation bins at the supermarket. The modern drive toward sustainability gives us an opportunity to get back to basics. Best Christmas dish on a budget. Making something. Having an op shop Christmas present challenge. Sometimes those gifts are the best, because there’s more love gone into them. Remember to take care of yourself. For me, there is nothing quite like the quiet of a midnight Christmas Eve Carol Service, with all the candles, as a chance to breathe. Meri Kirihimete. Hope you find peace and joy in the midst of the pre- Christmas rush.

Tessa

Clare Tovey

Presbyterian Support Presbyterian Support Upper South Island, Rangiora base welcomes a new staff member, Claire Tovey. I have a vast experience in Health. As a registered nurse I have worked in the fields of intellectual disability, mental health, dementia and aged care. In the position of Enliven Homeshare Co-ordinator, I will be using all the skills I have gained over the years to support older people in North Canterbury to live their absolute best life by staying connected with their communities, making new friends and staying healthy and strong.

We would love to have new volunteer hosts in the Waimakariri, running a mini day programme in their own home once a week (negotiable). This is a great social connection for the older people attending and also the host develops strong relationships. Please feel free to contact me Monday to Thursday from 9am–3.30pm (24 hours per week), on 027 3922 489 or clairet@psusi.org.nz

Cooking classes add an extra ingredient Cooking classes running at Comcol North Canterbury deliver a lot more than food prep. Ask the trainee cooks who spend 10 weeks in the Rangiora community college kitchen, making shopping lists, making food, and making friends. They don’t want the classes to end. IHC North Canterbury Association committee member Kay Pearce came up with the idea and the committee came up with the funds to pay for three 10-week sessions this year. Each session took seven people – and there’s a waiting list, including some who want to do it all again. The classes are run by Tutor Brooke Close, supported by Faye Gread. Brooke is the Programme Coordinator and Tutor for Comcol’s youth re-engagement course GROW. Faye works on reception and in administration. But when it gets to Friday – their usual tasks are set aside for what they both say is the highlight of their week. The trainees arrive, a coffee might be poured for anyone who missed breakfast, then they get down to business deciding what they want to cook for lunch. The food shopping is well researched. They go online to New World and PAK’nSAVE websites to see who has the best deals,

Making hamburgers from scratch are (from left) Kate McClintock, Gillian Hunter, Nick Latz, Alijah Prakash and Logan Moloney. then they go shopping. They are back at Comcol for morning tea, before starting the meal preparation for their shared lunch. The sessions cover equipment safety, hand hygiene, knife skills, safe food handling, and the kitchen clean-up afterwards. “We made many successful items in the kitchen, learning new skills each week, transferable to home life,” Brooke says. “The first group were identified by IDEA Services, as they were part of the local day programme,” Kay says. “We sought applications for groups two and three from our wider community of people with intellectual disabilities. All classes have been filled each time, plus I have had waiting lists. “What they have taken away from this programme, is confidence and the enjoyment in creating dishes together, of which all will be shared with family and friends in the future.”

6 Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust! There have been many smiley faces around Tūtaepatu Lagoon as the Grade 2 Waimakariri Cycle Trail passes halfway through completion. If you haven’t yet checked it out, now is an excellent time to come down and experience the smooth ride while enjoying all the spring growth and life within the park. Huria Mahinga Kai Heritage Reserve is also a hotspot; with the recent maintenance work and planting, this area is also gorgeous to check out and bring a picnic! We also have positive news all around when it comes to life within the park; the efforts that the community and the rangers have made throughout the park to date have been beneficial to many of our native species. The birdlife is booming following the return of many birds after last year’s fire, with korimako feeding on the nectar, the beautiful blue of numerous kōtare, young pīwakawaka taking flight, and the visits

Pi−wakawaka captured by one of our rangers, Mikaela W. received from tūī. Showcasing the positive impact of regeneration and pest control efforts and dedication of the community and rangers. The mudfish population in the pīwakawaka node proved large and healthy, with forty-four kōwaro in one gee minnow trap! We decided now was a good time to begin planning the translocation of some individuals into the home schoolers’ node to help increase their habitat as it has very similar water chemistry to the pīwakawaka node. Additionally, we have had a fantastic bunch of students from the University of Canterbury who partnered with us from August to September to discover more about our ground-dwelling invertebrate populations within the park via the use of pitfall traps, which allowed the live release of individuals after being counted. Tūhaitara Coastal Park has areas of pine

forest, regenerating natives, newly planted natives, grassland, sand dunes, and wetlands, each home to various species. Invertebrates are an essential part of the food chain, so their diversity is also a measure of the health of ecosystems. More invertebrates mean healthier systems, so planting is vital to support a growing community. The students found that invertebrate species are more diverse among native vegetation than in pine forests. Predatory spiders were the most abundant invertebrates in the pine forest and grassy clearings. Millipedes were the most caught species overall and found in most areas. The students have recommended that we continue to increase levels of native vegetation, including corridors of low, bushy native vegetation between our biota nodes to support a healthier ecosystem.

A selection of ground-dwelling invertebrates found within Tu−haitara Coastal Park. Clockwise from top left: Ground Beetle (Tribe Harpalini); Common millipede (Family Julidae) and mite (Order Mesostigmata); We−ta− (Pleioplectron simplex); Land hopper (Order Amphipoda) and Sheet web/Dwarf spider (Family Linyphiidae); Harvestman (Genus Aglidia); Rove Beetle (Tribe Xantholinini). The photographs are of different scales. This recommendation aligns perfectly with our Biota Node project. We are still welcoming whanau, community, business, or school groups to put their names forward to adopt and nurture a biota node to support the birds, bugs, fish, and flora within them. The Kaiapoi Garden Club has had a very interesting year of gardening both in their flower gardens as well as their vegetable gardens and hopefully will enjoy their produce for Christmas celebrations. Especially those fresh minted peas and new potatoes grown in your own garden. What a delight it is for your children or grandchildren to pod their own peas to help with family traditions. Our members will be finding out the Club’s competition of growing a ‘Potato in a Bucket.’ Will they have enough for Christmas dinner? With a new year coming perhaps you might like to try coming to Kaiapoi Garden Club meetings. We wish you a Happy Christmas. Our members come from different parts of the district as we offer an evening meeting once a month on the second Wednesday at the Kaiapoi Riverside Bowling Club at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members very welcome to join us. Phone 03 327 3210 or 03 327 6404 or email kaiapoigardenclub@gmail.com

The Chris Ruth Centre The Chris Ruth Centre is a disability service which provides an individualised programme for persons with complex physical and intellectual disabilities.

About Us Our main base is in Hoon Hay, Christchurch (est.1998) but due to increased demand it has been necessary for us to extend our services within the central city, Mid Canterbury and North Canterbury.

Kaiapoi Rugby Club rooms and lastly the Rugby League Club rooms. All three organisations were welcoming and did their best to accommodate us. However the importance of having our own place was soon evident and therefore we bought and developed our site at 2c Tunas Street.

Our North Canterbury centre is located at 2c Tunas Street, Kaiapoi and has been operating within the Waimakariri district since 2013. Until we moved into our existing location we were located in the Riverside Church, the

23 Protecting your property If you live outside a city, whether it’s a lifestyle block or a rural area, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of wildfires for yourself, your property and your livestock or other animals.

Around your home

Create safety zones

Embers can travel more than two kilometres from a wildfire. Enclose the space under homes and decks with fire-resistant material and reduce the threat of embers passing through vents in the eaves by installing 3mm metal mesh screening.

If you have a rural property, creating safety zones’ around your home can slow the spread of fire and give firefighters more space to safely fight a fire. In zone 1 (10 metres around your house), mow regularly, water your lawns whenever possible, grow low flammability plants, regularly clean gutters and remove leaves and twigs. In zone 2 (10–30 metres around your house), reduce the number of trees, particularly hedges (these often help spread wildfires). Space out remaining trees so they aren’t touching each other. Prune branches up to two metres from the ground and near power lines. Remove fallen branches, leaves and other accumulated debris.

The greatest risk to your home is when embers from a wildfire are carried by the wind. Keep roofs and gutters clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles.

Move anything that could burn (mulch, flammable plants, leaves, needles and firewood piles) away from wall exteriors, decks or porches. Ensure wooden fencing is not attached to the house. Carrying out regular maintenance to remove dead vegetation, and clear spouting and gutters to help prevent embers from igniting debris. For more safety tips and information go to: checkitsalright.nz/reduce-your-risk/protectingyour-property

26 Volunteering Pest Free Waimakariri

We are here to help you start a trapping group in your corner of Waimakariri so if you’ve ever thought this would be a good thing to do, then now’s the time.

Pest Free Waimakariri You look around and think how nice it would be to have more kererū and tūī in our gardens and next thing you know you’re trapping pests. Yes, that’s what happened to me, and I’ve been trapping for many years now and watching the birds come back. I’m Richard Chambers, the new Pest Free Waimakariri Ranger. Pest Free Waimakariri is new too, established with funding from Waimakariri District Council and Lotteries. The PFW goal is to see more native birds in our district. Native bird’s nests are preyed on by many introduced mammals so we need to give the birds a hand by trapping these pests.

We’re also here to bring together the groups and individuals already trapping in Waimakariri so that we can swap ideas, socialise and brainstorm the future of a Pest Free Waimakariri. Our initial goal is to set up trapping in a group of “natural” reserves – Kaiapoi Lakes, Northbrook Wetlands, Matawai Park, Townsend Reserve and White’s Road Reserve and help. Can you help? Catching rats, possums and stoats may not be everybody’s cup of tea but it’s surprising how quickly you get used to it. It’s a good excuse to spend time in our great local reserves, learn new things and at the same time make a real difference. If you’d like to talk about existing predator control or would like to be involved in these reserves or others please contact Richard pestfreewaimakariri@gmail.com

Our office will close for the Christmas/ New Year break on Wednesday, 20 December at 3.30pm and reopen on Monday, 8 January 2024 at 9.30am.

We’re all connected That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about, and get help with, any issue. The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. The trained volunteer researches options specific to each client’s situation and then explains these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next. Our bureau has an extensive, reliable and accurate database of local and national

information at our fingertips, which is updated regularly, along with pamphlets and booklets. Our website has lots of questions and answers and is easy to navigate. Why not try it? cab.org.nz

Get in touch We know that cost is a big barrier for people accessing the services they need. That’s why it’s important to us that our service is free and freely available. Do get in touch with us. We’re trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help. Our opening hours are 9.30am–3.30pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9am–4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday. Rangiora Museum The Museum 2024 calendar is now on sale with twelve local historic photos showing earlier local buildings from the Museum records and most also have the AFTER picture to show what is there today. The “Now” photos have been taken by Museum member David Petrie. We often forget what was there before. They make a great Christmas gift and are available at Rangiora Barbers, near the Council, and at the Museum on Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30– 4pm, for $15.

The Museum has had a great Community involvement year and is planning a good programme for 2024. Call in and see the exhibits and remember you can get assistance with Family Research. The Museum will be open Wednesdays and Sundays through the holiday period, except for Christmas Day and New Years Day. It is located in Good Street, behind the Bowling Club.

Come and view more than 30 decorated trees. Includes a Remembrance Tree and a Gifting Tree. Gifts to Well Being Canterbury. Not open Saturday 9 December but open during Santa Parade 10 December. Proceeds from festival this year to Big Brothers Big Sisters North Canterbury.
