Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora readers and welcome back! I hope you all had some meaningful days recharging your batteries. The “30 ways to Chill” ideas shared by the Community Team were very useful for me; exploring the wetlands, building a puzzle and meeting up with neighbours. Feeling rested and energised we can dive right into 2024. There are loads of community activities, so get your diaries out! There are workshops to help with being in the rental market, skills development opportunities for youth, a busy schedule of art and culture showcases, getting in touch with what indigenous biodiversity means and celebrating the world of volunteering. If you would like to find out more about the community-based organisations who are driving a lot of these programs, come join us at the Volunteer Expos that will be held in March. Groups will promote the type of work they do and will be on hand to chat to potential volunteers. You! Volunteers from around Waimakariri will tell you that it is not only a means of giving back, but it is personally rewarding; a way to connect, be inspired and grow in their own learning.

The Community Team will continue to foster the relationships with the wonderful community groups who work to make for a caring, healthier, more connected and welcoming place. I use the word “welcoming” with enthusiasm as Waimakariri is one of the more recent councils to sign on to the “Welcoming Communities Programme”, a project funded by Immigration NZ. A Welcoming Communities Plan will be co-designed with community members to develop ideas and activities where they may be needed. It will also be an opportunity to showcase and elevate existing initiatives that help make newcomers feel at home and a part of this beautiful district. So welcome to 2024 Chatter friends, stay connected, get involved and celebrate our diverse and vibrant district.

“Let’s normalise depression. The language is very important as many people still see it as a negative and some people don’t know why they are the way they are.” says Bryon Cope of Depression Support Network. A support group is happening in Kaiapoi in collaboration with the Person 2 Person Help Trust. Confidentially is paramount. Anyone wanting to attend the support group meetings needs to be a Depression Support client. To connect please call Bryon on (03) 366 8083 or 027 298 6445 or bryon@dsn.org.nz

6 Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust! We all hope you had a kirihimete ātaahua me te tau hou harikoa. All the rangers down at Tūhaitara Coastal Park sure did, with everything down at the park running relatively smoothly over the break. The bouts of rain and sunshine we have been having have benefited many of our later-season plantings; down south, an array of natives were planted back in October at an old forestry skid site. Makomako (Aristotelia serrata) was a species planted that particularly enjoyed the weather and the mulch left behind by log harvesting that had begun breaking down. The makomako planted has already doubled in size, with large, healthy, vibrant green leaves! Many factors affect plant growth, including but not limited to light, nutrient and water availability, soil composition and structure, all of which differ throughout the park. This diversity in conditions is why you might notice that many plantings establish and grow at different rates. If you look closely, you will see that the species between spots often differ, too. It is essential that when restoring forests and wetlands, we work with the plants and the environment to help increase chances of success. We can do this by looking at the environment and the factors that affect plant growth and then choosing species that favour the area's conditions and trying to mimic natural areas in their layering. Miss Daisy's node located on Woodend Beach Road has shown to have favourable conditions for many of our native species.

The growth rate here has been incredible; this node was planted in August 2022, and the plants have taken off in just under 1.5 years. We couldn't be prouder of the progress made, thanks to our team's hard work and dedication and the support of our community. Together, we are positively impacting our environment and preserving the beauty of our coastal park. We also want to say a special thanks to the men down at the Menz Shed in Kaiapoi; the guys have been creating wētā and invertebrate hotels to put around the park to facilitate our education programmes and help us understand more about life within Tūhaitara Coastal Park. These hotels simultaneously provide extra habitat while the biota nodes and planting are still establishing. With the help of the

Kihitara, a native invertebrate, captured consuming its prey by one of our rangers Mikaela W.

some old wood to create your insect hotel filled with an array of forgeable items like sticks and pine cones.

We encourage those of you reading to get the kids and create your habitats at home for invertebrates, wētā, or lizards; this can be done by either stacking some stones in the garden, planting a native wildflower seed mix, or getting creative and recycling

Peer Support North Canterbury Comcare Trust is a recovery focused organisation that provides free mental health and addiction services in the Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts for people with diagnosed mental illness and/or addiction. issues. Peer Support: Peer Supporters in North Canterbury can meet regularly to provide one to one in person support as a fully mobile service within the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Comcare’s Peer Support Service supports people, through shared experience, to make sense of what is happening for them and how they want to move forward. Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to learn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places. Promoting a ‘trauma-informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing. Referrals: Peer Support is for anyone aged 18+ who is experiencing mental distress and/or addictions. People can self-refer, be referred by SMHS, their GP or other community services. Visit www.comcare.org.nz/generic-referral to complete a referral. For Peer Support, select “Support to understand how my mental health or addiction impacts me” or “Support to understand my barriers to moving forward” from the What support is required field. 42 Sassafras – Bluegrass band is coming to the Balcairn Hall Saturday 17 February 2024, 7.30 pm For the very first time ever, the USA is coming to Balcairn this year!! Balcairn Hall is pleased to be hosting a very cool, very fun, very fast paced bluegrass band, Sassafras, straight from the Foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, USA. Their repertoire includes a range of musical styles including Ole-time, Country, Folk, Western Swing and original bluegrass. Sassafras is made up of four professional and very talented musicians, Wes Tuttle (Mandolin, Fiddle, Vocals), Randy Gambill (Guitar, Vocals), Gray Tuttle (Banjo, Vocals) & Josh Scott (Bass, Guitar, Vocals), and they have played with an incredible range of prominent Bluegrass and Americana artists and at a very large list of festivals and concert halls in the USA and internationally. They will be paying homage to the origins of Bluegrass music - the Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs era - but also enjoy pushing the edge of progressive 'Newgrass' music as well. Bluegrass music is the toe-tapping, fast paced music associated with the Appalachian region of the USA. It has its roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes, mixed up with blues and jazz. If you love good quality music, excellent talent and of course the best of Bluegrass, then this band is surely one not to be missed. Learn more about the band at their website: idigsassafras.com/
