Greetings
from the Editor Kia ora koutou For some strange reason I just love North Canterbury winters: • Sparkly white frosts followed by clear blue skies • Misty mornings • Books by the fire • Cooking up soup and making jam with the last of the garden produce While I am one of the odd folk who actually enjoy this time of year, I am mindful of those whose winter is long and hard. • The socially isolated for whom contact with the outside world is even more limited • Those in cold, poorly insulated homes, not able to afford adequate heating • Those without transport, forced to walk long distances in the rain • Those whose already poor health is affected with sore joints, asthma and winter ills …and right now, there are those whose lives have been turned upside down with a dramatic change in financial circumstances. At this time of year in particular, it’s important that we remember to give the friendly smile in the street, have the chat in
the queue, or pop in on that neighbour or friend who we know might be struggling. There’s been an awful lot going on in recent months and, as we step out of lockdown into the winter sun, it’s important that we look after our mental wellbeing. • Get out into the fresh air • Look for the beautiful things • Learn something new • Do something for someone else • Connect with others ….and when you’ve done all of that, make yourself a coffee, put your feet up, grab this month’s edition of Chatter and find out about the great supports, information and opportunities available in our District this month.

Community Profile
Hello!
Welcoming a new team member My name is Rachel Thornton and I’m the new Community Development Facilitator at the Community Team. This role is almost a “return home” for me because my journey over the last nine years in community development began here in Rangiora in the early days of the Hope Community Trust. That journey has entailed a number of roles that have enhanced my understanding and passion for community development, I am very excited to now be able to invest those skills and experience in our own community here in the Waimakariri. In that time I have gained a graduate diploma in not-for-profit management, worked internationally in the area of antihuman trafficking, and most recently had a role working with families and children affected by incarceration, as National Manager for Angel Tree Aotearoa. I live locally with my husband and our three sons, two of which are teenagers,
so as you can imagine sport is the order of the day outside of work hours. In my ‘other’ spare time (which there isn’t much of) I am an artist and I love nothing more than a catch up with friends. We live in an awesome community and I am looking forward to being a part of its future. I feel very fortunate to be in this role and look forward to getting my feet on the ground and hearing about all the fantastic work that is happening in our community and finding out how I can perhaps help in any small way. Feel free to contact me between Monday to Thursday 8.30am–4pm and Fridays 8.30am–12.30pm on rachel.thornton@wmk.govt.nz or 0800 965 468. See you soon!

8 The Age-friendly Waimakariri Advisory Group are meeting monthly now rather than every two months and our priorities have changed following the pandemic. The four themes we are now prioritising are:
Age-friendly Waimakariri Newsletter June 2020 Kia ora Koutou This month I went to a memorial service in the city for a friend of fifty years. Her husband died in a dementia home during Lockdown and as she was living in another place, she was unable to be with him. There were a group of about a dozen of us in the 1970’s, all stay at home mothers; an era long gone. Over the years some have drifted away and some have died. When I lived overseas for almost two decades we kept in touch and they organised lunches for me when I was home to visit family. We’ve been home ten years now. Four of us remained friends and now the youngest has died. Three of us went to the service. We all have health issues, the other two, serious ones, so I was the driver. The female version of Last of the Summer Wine we’ve decided to call ourselves and to meet more often. It has occurred to me that we may be a statistic: we are all still married to the men we married over half a century ago and they are all still alive. Staying connected is a mantra for COVID-19 and for Age-friendly Waimakariri. Not all older people are as fortunate as we three old friends.
1. Community support and health services 2. Respect and social inclusion 3. Communication and information 4. Social participation Communication underlies everything. How do we make sure people know where to go for help? There is such a myriad of information and so much of it is online these days which many older people do not have access to, or know how to use. At our May meeting we came up with the idea that one phone number would be helpful. We chose the Citizens’ Advice Bureau. You may have seen my article in the North Canterbury News about this. The number is 0800 367 222. Many older people do not want to learn about computers and worry about paying their bills and accessing services in this digital age. This is becoming more important with digital banking and as cheques disappear. Who is going to help them? I hope that the banks and other agencies will ask their customers how best to do this and come to their help. During Level 2 when we had social distancing a friend told me she had seen older people queuing outside the Rangiora branch of Southern Clinical Laboratories (SCL) blood testing clinic which has moved to 77b High St. It was a cold day. This does not seem very user-friendly to me. The Council have also had a query about parking near the blood clinic. Where do elderly and disabled people park for easy access?
9 There is a sign on the SCL window stating that car parks are not available and that they could be towed away. Blood tests are not done by appointment, the waiting room is often full and seating limited. Madeleine, our Age-friendly Facilitator, would like to hear your comments or experience: madeleine.burdon@wmk. govt.nz phone 0800 965 468. The Council have launched its consultation to shape the recovery plan being developed for the District post COVID-19. We are invited to share thoughts and ideas: details are in the Northern Outlook and on the District Council website. I awoke to the news this morning that Vera Lynn has died aged 103. What an inspiration she was during WWII with her singing. NZ is also in the world news as today is the first ever Royal Albatross Day. Have you seen them on the Otago Peninsular? Wonderful.

What is a Green Prescription? Sometimes the best medicine is a dose of physical activity. A Green Prescription is written advice from your doctor or practice nurse to be ACTIVE. It’s a support service that helps you to improve your health and feel better at the same time. If you need help to get more active, speak to your doctor or practice nurse. Your doctor may refer you because you are overweight, or have a medical condition which is stable, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or depression, and you would benefit from being more active.
How a Green Prescription can help: Being physically active has many benefits. Not only does it make you feel good, it can also help you to:
Make time to be more active Make being active a part of your day. The best way to get active and stay motivated is to find something you enjoy! Why not try: • Walking – it’s convenient and cheap. Walk on your own or in a group • Swimming or aqua fitness – there’s lots you can do in the water • Dancing – try something new and enjoyable • Gardening – fresh air and fresh vegetables • Family fun – join your kids for games in the park or backyard Ask your doctor if you are unsure about how active to be or if you experience any unexplained pain, dizziness or shortage of breath during activity.
• Feel more confident, happy and relaxed • Have more energy • Improve cholesterol levels • Improve blood sugar levels • Maintain a healthy weight • Reduce stress, feelings of anxiety and depression • Lower blood pressure • Improve sleeping habits • Keep your bones strong • Cope better with asthma and breathing problems • Increase flexibility, mobility and reduce the pain of arthritis
How can I get a Green Prescription? Ask your doctor or practice nurse about a Green Prescription or phone 0800 ACTIVE (22 84 83). Once you receive your Green Prescription, a trained support person will get in touch and help you get started with a physical activity programme that‘s right for you. You’ll get help with planning regular physical activity to help you stay active. There’s also the chance to meet and join other people in your community who are choosing to be more active just like you.

Stress anixiety and young people
conversation that’s best to start younger) and we’d appreciate your help in sharing this within your network!
As you probably experience on a daily basis, stress and anxiety are having an increasing impact on our young people. We’re increasingly finding that many parents don’t have the knowledge or skills to help their young people navigate these areas so on Wednesday July 22nd we’re putting on a parents evening in partnership with Rangiora High School, Attitude and the Waimakariri Youth Council.
Due to a significant drop in funding as a result of COVID-19 we’ve had to add a $5 cover charge to make running this event possible. However our first priority is supporting our community so if people aren’t able to attend because of this cost please email info@ryct.net.nz.
This is an awesome chance for parents to hear from a talented and relevant Attitude presenter alongside a Child and Family Psychologist. This presentation will not just give parents the knowledge, but more importantly the skills to have great conversations and support their young person to manage stress and anxiety in healthy way.

Two of our volunteers are Justices of the Peace and when they are on CAB duty they can also offer a JP service. Please phone to check availability and if we don’t have a JP in the office we will find one for you. If you can’t afford it, or aren’t confident in drawing one up, we can help you put together a CV and covering letter (by appointment). We have listened to those of you who are feeling excluded because you aren’t confident online and have developed a team to help you to navigate the digital world. This includes helping clients to set up a RealMe login, use myIR, use MyMSD, fill in government forms online, and upload documents for online applications. The service is by appointment. UPCOMING ONLINE WORKSHOPS: Great news - our workshops will now be online for the rest of 2020!
Deescalation
Tuesday 21 July 9.30am—12.30pm The Collaborative Trust is committed to assisting the healthy development of young people, through: •
Training the people who work with young people;
•
Undertaking and disseminating research and evaluation so that training and services can be based on evidence;
•
One of the most difficult parts of working with young people is when they become angry or upset. Many professionals often encounter this behaviour but they don’t know what to do about it. If you want to know what causes young people to “lose their temper” become angry or violent, what the stages are that lead up to an angry outburst, and how to deescalate the situation as quickly as possible, you need to attend this workshop.
Informing and influencing policy and practice.
Supporting Young People’s Positive Development and Wellbeing : A resource-building workshop Tuesday 28 July 9.30am—12.30pm
Wellbeing is often portrayed in media and policy as equating with Health, Wealth and Happiness. Yet, anyone who works with young people knows there is much more to being well, and it doesn't look the same from one young person to the next. In this workshop, three presenters will share what they know about supporting the positive development of young people, and will facilitate a sharing of resources about "what works" for young people they are working with.
Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Young People Thursday 10 September 9.30am—12.30pm
New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the Western World. Suicide is not inevitable and it can be prevented. This evidence based best practice workshop will take you through the latest research about suicide and provide practical tools to help to identify people who might be suicidal.

We want to know what you think about the concepts or what else you would like to see.
Visit waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk to look at some of our ideas and have your say before 20 July 2020.
