from the Editor Kia ora koutou - Hello all For many of us February/March is a time of anniversaries. Waitangi Day - a celebration of the, admittedly imperfect, start of an intentional partnership between tangata whenua and the Crown. February 22nd - 10 years since the quake that reframed life as we know it in Canterbury. Sorrow and trauma; but with that the opportunity for increased collaboration and recognition of the idea that people and community are easily as important as infrastructure. Our towns and city have blossomed over that period, rising like a phoenix from the ashes, with the creative design and vibrancy that result from bringing every day people into the discussion early. Locally, this month we join Citizens’ Advice Bureau in celebrating 50 years of being a place where people can pop in and get useful information and practical assistance with anything from where the nearest playgroup is, to legal advice. I wonder how many people over those 50 years have had a burden lifted and their day made just a little brighter, thanks to those willing volunteers. For the Community Team, February/ March is about getting people together. We’ve

carried on with a suite of Neighbourhood BBQs. These are proving to be a great means to get people thinking about making better use of local parks and noticing the people who could do with someone to chat to. With Neighbours’ Day coming up on March 20th, we’re wanting to raise awareness of the value of knowing the person over the fence or two doors down. Alongside this, we’re continuing work toward a more food secure District. We are engaging with people, businesses and organisations on what ‘food security’ looks like beyond food banks and the odd community garden - considering the part that each might play and who else could help create a District where everyone can source and prepare good food. An escape plan tells you how to get out of the house if there's a fire. Fire is extremely hot and fast. In a fire, there will be lots of smoke. This will make your house very dark. You might be asleep when the fire starts, and get woken up by your smoke alarm. If you have an escape plan, you will know how to escape the house as quickly as possible. 6 Gail Cunningham resigning from Hope Community Trust I have loved being a part of the Hope Community Trust Team for almost 5 years, but the time has now come that I resign from my position as Community Support Worker. I have really enjoyed my time with the Trust and all the amazing, talented and resourceful people that I have met over the years. I'm now starting some Post Graduate studies but will still be around the Rangiora area. Thank you is easy to say, but doesn't really convey the gratitude that I feel for the work and people that I have been privileged to meet during this time.

While I still can – My Journey My name is Eugene Sanders. I recently received a health prognosis that has changed my future forever and is the reason why I am on this journey and raising funds for Kidney Health NZ. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease After a recent check-up, my diagnosis was that my kidney health is deteriorating and that I will be needing a kidney transplant in the near future. In September this year, my 15 year old son, Joshua, was also diagnosed with this hereditary disease. This has prompted me to complete a fundraiser and awareness journey in 2021, before it will be too difficult health wise. Celebrating 50 years serving the community. The Citizens Advice Bureau is celebrating 50 years of service in Aotearoa. This means countless hours of advice to the public, providing information on everything from housing and consumer rights to immigration and employment. This is a time to recognise the thousands of skilled CAB volunteers and staff who dedicate their time to providing free confidential advice and access to the rights and services people need. The Citizens Advice Bureau has been working for positive social change for 50 years in an ever-changing world and is ready to serve the public for the next five decades and beyond. A people-centred service is more valued now than ever and is a service that the CAB is proud to deliver. In this age of uncertainty, we remain optimistic about the future – a future filled with change for good. We are proud of the legacy the CAB has created and for the future it will forge. Relay for Life Waimakariri – Saturday 10 April 2021 Relay is an incredible event that brings whole communities together, it gives everyone a chance to celebrate/whakanui cancer survivors and carers; remember/ maumaharatia loved ones lost to cancer; and fight back/tū atu by raising awareness and funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. Everyone and anyone can be involved. Whether you have a connection to

someone who has been or is going through cancer or you want to make a difference, join us to create a future with less cancer. The money raised through Relay For Life helps people in North Canterbury t hrough the Cancer Society’s support services, health promotion programmes and cancer research.

21 Cancer Society North Canterbury Groups and Events – March 2021 Rangiora Newly Diagnosed Patients Group for Patients First Wednesday (3 March) of each month from 10-11.30am. Meet in a safe, warm, friendly environment. We will be learning about support available to maintain exercise and fitness this month. Rangiora Support Group Meet weekly on a Tuesday for a walk and coffee at 9.30am. Meet at the Jewellery Stand in The Warehouse for a walk around Northbrook Waters. Note: the walking part of this is on hold until 9 March so it’s straight to Artisan Café at 10.30am to purchase your coffee and meet upstairs.

Men’s Group in the Hurunui We are looking at what we can offer to support men in their community. Please contact us to more information as we begin to plan for this group.

NEW Writers and Orators Group Commencing on Mondays 10.30am-12pm. Facilitated by Jason Clements from the Waimakariri library. The group will run for six weeks each term and will be held at the Rangiora Library.

22 Registrations open for Next Steps cancer group exercise classes Term 2 2021 Next Steps is a specialized group exercise program run by Active Health’s Certified Cancer Rehabilitation Physiotherapist, Susan Larson. The classes combine pilates, yoga and cardiovascular exercises for a workout that is specifically designed to help women and men rebuild their strength, flexibility and stamina after cancer treatments. Classes are suitable after any type of cancer surgery or treatments and accommodate all ages, fitness levels and mobility. Next Steps benefits participants whether they attend one week or 10 years after their cancer treatment. The goal is to help people affected by cancer take the Next Step on their road to recovery, with the goal that following these classes they will be ready and confident to attend mainstream fitness classes, gym based training or independent fitness. Registration is now open for Term 2 2021 which will run on Fridays from 12.30-1.30pm during the school term May 7- July 9. Classes are held at the Rangiora Fitness Centre at 345 Flaxton Road, Rangiora. Funding for this term of classes is kindly provided by Dry July. Assistance is available for groups and individuals who are keen to provide arts and cultural activities in the Waimakariri District from the Creative Communities New Zealand Scheme. The next Creative Communities round will close Monday 29 March 2021, for events or activities that take place between 1 May 2021 and 1 May 2022. Research has found that compassion is a response that has ensured our survival. Putting compassion and kindness into action repeatedly with awareness, continues to ensure not only our basic biological survival, but it also optimises our physical and psychological wellbeing. How do compassion and kindness benefit us?

Managing Big Emotions Thursday 25 March 9.30am—11.30am

With a focus on the significant adults in the lives of young people, this workshop aims to provide a basic understanding of the role of ‘big feelings’ in development. Anxiety will be the main emotion that will be explored and those attending will gain knowledge, skills and confidence in managing anxious behaviours in a way that promotes a young person’s bravery and wellbeing.

Understanding and Responding to Self Harm and Suicide in Young People Tuesday 13 April 9.30am —12.30pm

Self-harm and suicide are major issues amongst New Zealand young people. Recent studies suggest up to one third of teenagers have tried self-harm. It is an issue that needs to be taken extremely seriously. There are a lot of myths about both topics that prevent a lot of people from getting the help they need. This evidence based, best practice workshop will empower you to help a young person who is self-harming.

7th: Kaiapoi Children’s Day 12pm – 3pm, Trousselot Park, Kaiapoi. Come along to Trousselot park for this FREE family fun day celebrating our children. Entertainment includes Fun HQ inflatables, go-karts and paddle boats, Move X trampoline mat and Sport Suzy show starting at 12.45pm. Our local community groups will be attending with activities and so much more!

7th: Rakahuri Rage

10am – 4pm, Rakahuri Trail. Teams of 2-4 riders compete to see who can do the most laps of a 6km track in 6 hours. The course is suitable for riders of all abilities from 12 years and older, and there are many categories to suit everyone. From $55.00 to enter.

14th: Kaiapoi Fun Run 9am, Kaiapoi Borough School, Kaiapoi. 5km or 10km run/walk through Silverstream and back to Kaiapoi Borough School. Tickets available at Kaiapoi i-SITE. $5 under 16 and $10 over 16 (cash only). Fabulous spot prizes up for grabs!
