Greetings from the Editor

Welcome to our March Chatter edition. We have a busy month ahead, with many community groups offering events, connection and support to our residents here in Waimakariri.

February was a month full of action as people returned from holiday, kick started activities and planned new events. Both paid and volunteer firefighters battled blazes in North Canterbury and on the Port Hills. It’s timely to acknowledge the volunteer commitment across our networks. The Volunteer Expos are on again in March. These are great opportunities for people to chat with many organisations about their services and volunteer roles.

In April, we will be hosting the inspirational Julia Rucklidge, speaking about nutrition and young people at MainPower Stadium. Follow our Facebook page “Waimakariri Community Team” for more information.

I have been lucky over the past weeks to attend training sessions with Tuahiwi Education team. They spoke about

their migratory histories, their cultural practices on the land that we walk, drive and live on and about their journey, seeking redress from the Crown with the Ngāī Tahu Waitangi Tribunual claim. I encourage others to consider participating in this enlightening training.

On 21 March, we celebrate Race Unity Day. The intention of this day is to promote racial harmony and understanding. Schools in Waimakariri have the opportunity to enter an artwork poster competition to create a piece that reflects the theme of ‘weave the people together’. As our district is becoming more multi-cultural, our differences help us build stronger, more inclusive communities. We look forward to seeing the creations from our rangatahi!

Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!

As we approach planting season, we have secured funding for additional plants to enhance Tūhaitara Coastal Park further. If you’re passionate about helping the environment or the local community, express your interest in our upcoming planting days under the Planting Days tab on our website. As usual, there will be a BBQ at all our planting day events as a thank you from Papatūānuku and us for giving back to our environment, which provides for and looks after us daily.

Summertime calls for copious amounts of maintenance. In the park, you’ll likely see Rex on the mower and Deane and Murray

maintaining the tracks and biota nodes with the brush cutters. They have reached the end of the biota node rounds, which means it’s time to go around again!

There is always work to do around here, so we have been extremely grateful for our summer staff, who lent a hand over the sunny season.

The education sector is also in full swing as the new school year advances. Mikaela has broadened her role within the trust and stepped into our Education Ranger position. Having obtained a bachelor’s degree in biological and environmental

science, she has accumulated knowledge and a deep passion for being a voice for plants and animals. Mikaela wants to share this knowledge and aroha for nature with the Tamariki to help lead a lasting impact, fostering a sense of kaitiakitanga, allowing the Tamariki to connect deeper with the environment around them and understand all its interconnected beauty.

New school groups will learn about various ecosystems and species while actively contributing to creating a thriving indigenous plant corridor. From identifying native flora and fauna to

understanding the lifecycle of vital species like Tuna, Kōwaro and lizards, each lesson is a step toward becoming true kaitiaki, guardians of our environment.

Returning school groups will get to build on the foundation laid in the first section; participants will explore more complex concepts surrounding biodiversity, soil, wetlands, food chains, adaptations, and the significance of the dunes, intertidal region, and the ocean.

For others who are interested in finding out more about these concepts, come into the park and have a kōrero with Mikaela or tune in to the local radio station CompassFM to listen to the monthly kōrero, covering similar topics to help spread awareness knowledge and aroha to show why we should all be kaitiaki of the environment.

A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. If you don’t have a budget, a friendly Financial Mentor will be eager to help you create one.

Perhaps you already have a budget and simply need a WOFF (Warrant of Financial Fitness).

Your Financial Mentor will work with you, in a caring and non-judgemental way, to try to get to the bottom of your concerns.

At your first appointment you will receive a free “Spending Diary” to track those small “discretionary” outgoings i.e. $6 coffee, $4 lolly etc.

Our tips:

• Beware of little expenses. A small leak can sink a big ship.

• What gets measured, gets improved.

CAB Awareness Week

Each year, CABs throughout Aotearoa New Zealand celebrate Awareness Week. We will mark it in 2024 from Monday 11 March to Sunday 17 March.

Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping people know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action.

This year’s theme for Awareness Week is ‘Youth’. We want to highlight how we already serve young people and the ways that young people participate in the CAB, as well as looking at how we can do more to inspire and enable younger people to connect with the CAB.

Attention all rangatahi! We know figuring out adulthood can mean facing a mountain of challenges, but fear not, because we've got your back!

Citizens Advice Bureau can hook you up with what you need to navigate life in

Aotearoa. Need help with getting your ID sorted? No problem! Want advice on flatting, buying a car, or understanding insurance? We've got you covered, and it's all free and confidential!

If you’ve ever considered making a difference in your community, now's your chance! How about applying to volunteer with us at Citizens Advice Bureau and unleash your potential! Gain valuable experience, boost your CV, and work alongside awesome volunteers of all ages, learning and making a positive impact together. Hono mai! Come and join us at Citizens Advice Bureau.

We invite everyone to get in touch with us if you need help with any matter, no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help. Our opening hours are 9.30am-3.30pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9am- 4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

0800 What's Up - A helpline for children and teenagers

0800 What’s Up is our helpline for tamariki and rangatahi in Aotearoa. It’s available nationwide, and children and teenagers can either call for free or chat online with one of our counsellors. Tamariki and rangatahi can ask to speak with a counsellor who they can positively relate to (a specific gender or ethnicity), and can ask to have ongoing counselling with the same counsellor if it helps them build trust. Empowering children and teenagers is central to our counselling practice.

We help to develop a child or teenager’s personal competence and resilience, so they can take a positive perspective on the world around them. Tamariki and rangatahi are encouraged to get in contact to talk about anything at all.

No problem is too big or too small. 0800 What's up is open 365 days a year. Call: Mon-Sun 11am-11pm. Online Chat: Mon-Sun 11am-10:30pm

Training/Professional Development/Courses

Community Law Canterbury are running a series of workshops about the new incorporated societies law. Two of these workshops are in Hurunui (in March) and Waimakariri (in May).

The new laws require groups to update their constitutions, do disqualification checks on their officers, apply to re-register their group, and follow the new law.

Groups who don’t will be de-registered, meaning that they will lose the legal protections and advantages that come with incorporation.

If you are on the Committee of a local incorporated society and you would like to know more about the new law and the steps your group will need to take to comply with it, these workshops may be of interest to you.

Please email communityeducation@canlaw.org.nz for more information.

Suzanne Lynch, Elizabeth Braggins and Graham Wardrop are coming to the Balcairn Hall

Saturday 23 March 2024 - 7.30pm

The newly formed trio of three fabulous musicians in their own right combining their immaculate skills make a powerful force of dynamism and listening pleasure for the audience.

With 3-part harmonies a priority backed by top-class piano and guitar by Braggins and Wardrop, this is a must see.

The song choice ranges from some nostalgic toe tappers from Suzanne’s songbook, some jazzy numbers from Elizabeth’s and some originals and covers from Graham’s.

Suzanne’s voice has led her all over the world backing world famous musicians such as Cat Stevens and Mary Hopkins.

Elizabeth’s piano playing and her caramello voice are a firm favourite for Christchurch listeners and Graham’s guitar playing and his sensitive vocals are also in high demand around the country.

Concert: Balcairn Hall, Ashby's Road, Balcairn

Tickets $30 available from:
