Poster Competition
ceremony 2024.
Greetings from the Editor
Kia ora koutou
The Race Unity Poster Competition was held during the month of March, inviting all students in the District to participate by creating a poster depicting this year’s theme, Weave the People Together. The competition was held in support of Race Unity Day which is on 21 March each year.
The project aims to inspire students and schools to think about cultural inclusion, break down barriers and create greater understanding of the many different cultures that make up our district.
This year we saw an increase in the number of entries submitted, with a total of 209 posters received and 15 schools represented. North Loburn School produced an outstanding effort by really getting behind the heart of the project and 78 of their 80 students completed a poster (two students were away).
A special prizegiving ceremony was held soon after to celebrate the students and their amazing artwork. We have some very talented young artists who are deep thinkers!
It was great to have local businesses show their support for the project by providing sponsorship of either prizes or contribution towards afternoon tea at the prizegiving ceremony.
A special thanks to Artisan Bakery, North Canterbury Books, PaknSave Rangiora, The Drawing Room and New World Rangiora. We are also grateful to the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, who partially funded the project.
Another initiative coming soon is the Migrant Driver Mentor Programme in partnership with The Salvation Army Driving Programme. We are looking for volunteer driver mentors to help some of our ‘global locals’ get driving practice to sit their restricted licence. Keep an eye out in next month’s Chatter to find out more about how to get involved.
All the best

We have space for three more people to join this group. The programme is becoming very successful, with very positive feedback from those attending and the carers.

Providing an environment for the health and wellbeing of men.
Where do you go to have a kitchen chair repaired, installation of an enclosure for cats, Insect Hotels and Weta Boxes for a coastal park, outdoor tables and garden seats? Our shed is actively out in the community assisting people - whether it be a handrail, a minor repair or some painting.
We supply Bird Feeders, Spurtles, Fairy Houses and wooden toys including large Tic Tac games. Garden seats come in regularly for refurbishment. We overhauled a competition trailer for the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade. Our Shed is busy!
Give a Little Page - Please. Sutton Tools are shifting out of Kaiapoi meaning the Shed with over 50 members will have to move to a site in Courtney Drive, Kaiapoi. But we desperately need funds to enable us to have purpose-built buildings on this new site. If you are reading this - dig out your credit card and click on the blue address: givealittle.co.nz/cause/kaiapoi-menzshed-could-close-without-your-help
On the first page is the Orange “Donate” button. Please click on this and follow through. This is not a scam! Alternatively - donations can be made online directly to the Menzshed of Kaiapoi bank account- 03-1585-0428006-00. Please include a name and mention Donation.
Hint - for online donations - copy the account number - saves a lot of typing!

Therapy Group in North Canterbury
A therapeutic choir making a difference for people with neurological conditions.
Communication is a vital part of all our lives and talking is generally our main form of communication. Cantabrainers Choir aims to help adults who have lost some communication skills to use their voice again to communicate to the best of their abilities
These changes can be due to a stroke, a disease such as Parkinsons or one of many different neurological conditions.
There is no need to know how to sing or to read music. Most of our members have never sung in a choir before. Being in pitch or in tune is not a requirement. We are not a community choir but a therapeutic, neurological choir.
Music and speech share many characteristics: pitch, rhythm, tone, pace, and volume, this is why the Cantabrainers Choir is run and co led by a Registered Music Therapist (May Clulee - Southern Music Therapy) and a Registered Speech Language Therapist. (Angela Reimer STAR) Both with experience in neurological therapies.
Following on from the success of the Christchurch choir (est 2012) we are now running a choir in Woodend. This meets weekly on a Tuesday afternoon. Anyone in the North Canterbury area is very welcome to contact us to see if the Choir is a good therapeutic fit for them or their whanau.
Contact us on GM@therapychoirs.org.nz or via our website www.cantabrainerschoir.nz

Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to give a BIG shout out to Te Puna Tahua, the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, for continuing to support youth mentoring in North Canterbury!
Did you know, that whilst our service is free to families in need, it costs over $2,000 a year to match just one vulnerable child in the community with a 'Big Brother' or 'Big Sister'?
Local Woodend mentor Caitlin, pictured with her ‘Little Sister’ Aroha, are pretty stoked that some of the profits made from New Zealand state lotteries will help to make more life-changing friendships - just like theirs - in North Canterbury!
Thank you Te Puna Tahua, we couldn't do what we do without your support!

Hours
Our office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3.30pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4.30pm.
Services
We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. Our service is not-for-profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We’re available face-to-face, by phone and by email.
There’s no time limit on how long you can spend with one of our volunteers and all our services are free and confidential.
Our Clinics
We hold free fortnightly clinics that cover legal assistance, employment, budgeting and immigration queries. The employment and budgeting clinics are drop-in. However the legal assistance and immigration clinics are by appointment only. We host a free weekly legal clinic run by Community Law Canterbury (by appointment or drop-in). In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they offer that service when they’re on duty.
Please get in touch for dates and more information about the clinics and JPs.
Extra support even if you’ve already done some research
Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether that’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas/phone/power provider about a query on your bill, or how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue. Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours.
Our Service
Do come and see us. We are trained to listen and to research. We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. We’re here to help.
You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Know your Consumer Rights
Have you bought something recently which is faulty in some way, or maybe it’s broken down after only a very short time? Your rights to have it repaired or replaced are covered under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
The Act covers almost all goods (new and second-hand) and services you would normally buy from a commercial entity. Items the Act does not cover includes houses and private sales (e.g. through Trade Me from a private individual).
One very important point to note is that retailers cannot contract out of the Act.
It’s also worth noting that the Extended Warranty that many retailers try to sell you is offering no more protection than you’re already entitled to under consumer law, your home and contents insurance, or the manufacturer’s warranty.
In some cases, the extended warranty offers less cover than you’re entitled to under the law. For more information on Extended Warranties click here: consumer.org.nz/articles/extended-warranties
Consumer NZ is an organisation which has been in operation since 1959. They provide consumers with a wide range of consumer protection advice and information. They have written an excellent article which is easy to read, and it takes you through your consumer rights for when something goes wrong.

Balcairn Hall Presents: Dr. T & The Dangerous Woman on Saturday 11 May 2024, 7.30pm at the Balcairn Hall, Ashby's Road, Balcairn
A fun band, strong vocal, original songs, and covers.
A bourbon infused idea of The Dr's that came to fruition on the Whare Flat Festival stage in 2022 and has more fully developed with each gig since. Dr T & The Dangerous Women play Americana music tinged with dust of the high deserts and flavoured by the borderlands of California.
Performing a range of originals and uniquely arranged covers, the five members utilising stand-up bass, bass guitar and cello (Alexandra Bidwell); accordion and piano (Sophia Bidwell); fiddle and mandolin (Anna Bowen); guitars (Dr Hyram Twang) and with male and female lead vocals (Hyram and Claire Louise) they seem to entrance their audience and transport them to another place and time.
They recently performed at the Canterbury Folk Festival bringing even ceilidh worn dancers to their feet again with a rocking dancing set and some to tears with beautiful ballads in their quieter moments. All the members of the band have significant musical pedigrees of their own and bring their various talents and experience fully to this project. This is a show you won’t want to miss!
