Greetings

from the Editor Kia ora koutou ‘Ma tini ma mano ka rapa te whai. Many hands make light work. - Unity is strength.’ Community Team staff and Social Services Waimakariri recently hosted a workshop aimed at unpacking effective collaboration, exploring opportunities to add value to existing collaborations and identifying opportunities for new relationships to be formed for the benefit of the people in our District. The Waimakariri District is recognised as a leader in collaboration for positive community outcomes. The Council’s Community Team Annual Report celebrates the result of those collaborations. To view this on the Council website, visit: waimakariri.govt.nz/community/workingwith-the-community After a pretty crazy year, it’s good to think that we’re on the downhill run but, given the incredible appetite that our community has for getting things done, it doesn’t quite feel that way as yet. There’s still heaps happening and heaps to look forward to as we head toward the ‘silly season’. Work toward creating an inclusive, connected, resilient and empowered District continues. This includes looking

at community spaces where people can connect, community gardens, food forests and pantries, resource and skill sharing, addressing the tough issues like suicide, addiction and housing, and the concept of neighbourhood. In the old days, neighbourhood was where the lady across the road taught you to crochet, or the kuia two doors down taught you raranga putiputi, the making of flax flowers. It was where the neighbour across the fence let you help him pick peas and taught you how to plant rows of carrots. Neighbourhood was where everyone knew you. There was a genuine looking out for each other and positive intergenerational and intercultural connection. It would be great to get that back. We’re on the way, but there’s more to be done, I reckon. Kai kaha. Noho ora mai.

Community Information

An important update from Tūhaitara Coastal Park On behalf of the team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park we would like to thank all of our wonderful volunteers for a fantastic native tree planting season. Despite a late start, we were able to successfully plant all the trees we had ordered for the season. This would not have been possible without the support from our volunteers who kindly donate their time and energy. As always, we encourage you to check out our “Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park” Facebook page for regular updates as well as information about volunteer opportunities.

In regards to our Open Day Event which is normally held in November each year- we have made to decision to postpone this year’s event until early 2021. We apologize for the change, and hope you will still be able to join us for the event. Please see the “Friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park” FB page for more information and further updates. In the meantime, please continue visiting and enjoying our wonderful park. If you would like a map of all the walking, cycling, and horse tracks that Tūhaitara Coastal Park has to offer, visit www.tuhaitarapark.org.nz

Road Safety Week is a community event held annually, promoted by Brake but run by you. It's your opportunity to get great publicity and attention for a road safety campaign run by you in your town, company, club, school or kindy. Whoever you are, wherever you live, help raise awareness of the terrible carnage on NZ roads by getting involved in Road Safety Week. For further information go to the website or contact Kathy Graham, Road Safety Co-ordinator, Waimakariri District Council, 0800 965 468 www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz

5 Dementia Canterbury 2020 Annual Appeal Our Annual Appeal this year is on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November and we are very much in need of volunteer collectors. We realise that Covid-19 has caused anxiety in relation to social distancing and meeting in public but hope that in Level one (as we are at the time of writing this) people are feeling more confident in social settings. To offer reassurance, we will have masks and pocket-sized hand sanitiser packs available for all volunteers. Also, our buckets will have a QR barcode displayed to allow for contactless payment. Call Deb or Karen on 03 379 2590. Please indicate where and when you would like to collect. We are also looking for people who might co-ordinate a collection site for the day, perhaps get a group of friends who could cover one to two hour shifts over a few hours? We rely heavily on the support of our volunteers. As a not-for-profit with nearly two thirds of our income coming from fundraising we really need your help.

9 Growing the Capability and Capacity of the Volunteer Sector International Volunteer Managers Day – 5 November Taking care of the volunteer programme is a vital role within a group or organisation, but not always an easy one. It might be the responsibility of a Manager, a Project leader or dedicated Volunteer coordinator, they might be paid or a volunteer themselves. Whoever does the work in your organisation be sure to acknowledge them with a special thank you on 5 November.

Volunteer Managers/Coordinators Anyone who is responsible for the coordination of volunteers, (whether in a paid or volunteer role) is welcome to join the Waimakariri Volunteer Co-ordinators group. It is an informal group facilitated by WDC Community team. We usually meet 2 or 3 times a year, to share ideas, network and occasional email communication. 2020 has had its unique challenges so we haven’t met recently, but will resume again in 2021. If you would like to be included, contact Wendy, see below.

International Volunteers Day – 5 December Many groups and organisations take this opportunity to recognise the important work contributed by volunteers. Most people like to know their work is being appreciated. There are plenty of ways to show your volunteers how special they are. Here are a few low budget options. Personalised cards or certificates, a morning tea get together, a fun quiz about your organisation and staff with

choc fish prizes. Also, remember that many of the philanthropic funders will give funding to pay for volunteers training and acknowledgement.

Local Training workshops Over the past year we have provided workshops on Health and Safety, Performance Reviews, three part funding series, and a three part governance series. More workshops will be organised for early 2021. If you have any particular topics that would help your group, please get in touch, see below.

Building Governance for Not for profit groups and organisations The Community team may be able to help your organisation improve its governance capability. Does everyone on the board or committee know what their responsibility is? Are you focussed on the forward direction? Have you reviewed policies recently? Is it easy to attract new board members with necessary skills and knowledge? Are your meetings short, focussed and enjoyable? Are you really making a difference? If you are answering mostly yes – congratulations. If you would like to be answering yes but are feeling uncertain where to start, we could help you, see contact below. For more information please contact Wendy Howe, ph: 021 432 028, email: wendy.howe@wmk.govt.nz

10 Pegasus Community Centre The morning of Wednesday 23 September was a busy one at the Pegasus Community Centre as the PCC Team hosted representatives of a variety of social service agencies. Approx. 45 people were present to learn more about the PCC and check it out for their future use. A marvelous morning tea spread was made possible with help from Satisfy Food Rescue and the Centre was looking great thanks to the loan of some greenery from Woodend Nurseries (thanks Stu!).

There was genuine surprise from many present at just how much the PCC has to offer and many expressed an interest in bringing their service to Waimakariri residents by having a regular presence at the centre. The main aim of the event was to raise awareness of the facility in a way that results in local communities having easier access to valuable services. PCC Team member Roger Rule addressed those present pointing out that with a current population of approx. 8,000 in the immediate catchment area of Tuahiwi, Woodend, Waikuku and Pegasus, plus rapid growth occurring in both Woodend and Pegasus, the availability of social services is becoming increasingly essential. The services represented were too many to list here, but included; counselling, disability services, mental health, budget advice, support for the elderly, Citizens Advice Bureau and Pegasus Medical Centre. The PCC is a Waimakariri District Council facility run in association with the Pegasus Community Centre (PCC) Team (a function of the Pegasus Residents’ Group). To book the PCC: visit www.waimakariri.govt.nz/facilities/facility/pegasus-community-centre, email office@wmk.govt.nz or phone 0800 965 468 To contact the PCC Team email pcc@pegasusresidentsgroup.com

Services & Programmes

Did you know that Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand has a social policy unit? Our work nationally and here in North Canterbury is driven by a desire to use our knowledge of the types of problems people in our communities are facing to help solve the underlying causes of those problems. Our service provides us with unique information about the issues affecting people in communities nationwide. Every time a person seeks the CAB’s help, we record what they sought help about and what we did in response. We use the insights gained from these enquiries to show when government policies and laws, or the implementation of these, are having a negative impact on people throughout the country, and we argue for positive social change.

Remember all our services are free and we can help you with any enquiry, big or small.
