Greetings from the Editor

It was to my great delight, a few mornings ago, to see that the tulips have started blooming in Victoria Park. I think one of the most delightful things about spring is seeing what comes up in the garden. As the seasons roll over I tend to forget about the spring bulbs sleeping under the soil, so that each spring the variety of pretty flowers seem like a fresh surprise.

As we shake off the winter coats and enjoy a few more hours of daylight, it’s worth considering how we spend our extra leisure time. Are we filling our cup and/or the cup of others? Are we moving our bodies, feeding out minds, noticing the little things, being positively productive? It’s worth taking stock every now and then, as it’s all too easy to get weighed down by all that’s in the media and the immediacy of overly busy lives.

I do think that giving back in a meaningful way is one of the secrets of wellbeing. You just have to spend an evening at Hope Trust’s Community Kai to know that you are blessed as much, if not more, by giving as by receiving. There are a number of volunteering opportunities advertised

in this month’s edition of Chatter. In particular, Age Concern are looking for a few more men to fill their volunteer pool.

I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Joanne Gumbrell, one of our incredible local volunteers leading or serving the community. Among many other things, Joanne led the Age Friendly Steering Group and then Advisory Group, responsible for the development of a comprehensive and enduring plan to make the Waimakariri an Age-friendly District. Joanne worked tirelessly for this community for many years, including U3A, leading writer’s workshops and virtually running the wee St Martin’s Loburn Anglican Church, for a time; as well as planning for a number of wider parish projects. Joanne was always an incredibly positive person, full of good humour, kindness and generosity. She was well loved and will be missed, but remembered fondly by many.

Kia ora e te hoa.

Well done and thank you dear friend.

Nau mae haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust

Exciting times are on the horizon for Tūhaitara Coastal Park and its visitors as a new accessible Grade 2 Waimakariri Cycle Trail is set to be established. This significant project is made possible through the dedicated efforts of Visit Waimakariri and Enterprise North Canterbury. This trail promises to enhance the park’s accessibility, contribute to Tūhaitara Coastal Park’s broader community goals, and create an enjoyable experience for cyclists and walkers due to its shared use.

There is also an exciting opportunity to get involved with the biota node project. Biota nodes within Tūhaitara Coastal Park comprise freshwater holes or areas planted with native flora species that provide berries and nectar for our native birds. The birds naturally propagate native flora,

allowing for further establishment and extension of the nodes, gradually connect them all. The biota node project aims to facilitate natural ecological processes to help rehabilitate Tūhaitara Coastal Park and preserve our indigenous biodiversity for future generations. We invite community, school, whanau, and business groups passionate about preserving indigenous flora and fauna to contact us if you want to adopt and nurture one of the biota nodes within Tūhaitara Coastal Park.

While on the topic of preserving indigenous biodiversity, Huria Mahinga Kai and Heritage Reserve planting day was another great success that marked the end of our volunteer planting days for the year as temperatures begin to reflect summer approaching. We want to thank all our wonderful volunteers who lent a helping hand to recloak Papatūānuku this year! Plantings will commence again next autumn for anyone interested in coming along. You can sign up to be notified about future planting days through our website under the planting days tab.

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere.

You can take steps to be prepared.

In an emergency, you may be stuck at home for three days or more. Figure out what supplies you need and make a plan to work out what you need to get through.

At home

You probably have most of the things you need already. You don’t have to have them all in one place, but you might have to find them in a hurry and/or in the dark.

• Water for three days or more — make sure you have at least nine litres of water for every person. This will be enough for drinking and basic hygiene.

• Long-lasting food that doesn’t need cooking (unless you have a camping stove or gas barbecue) and food for babies and pets.

• Toilet paper and large plastic buckets for an emergency toilet.

• Work gloves and a properly-fitted P2 or N95 mask.

If you have special dietary needs, make sure you have enough to last three days at home. As well as in a grab bag. If you have to evacuate, emergency shelters may not have the food that you need.

Don’t forget that you and your neighbours can help each other by sharing supplies too.

By looking after yourself and your household, you’ll also be helping emergency services focus their limited resources on the people who need the most help.

In a grab bag

Have grab bags ready for everyone in your family. A grab bag is a small bag with essential supplies.

Each bag should have:

• Walking shoes, warm clothes, raincoat and hat

• Water and snack food (remember babies and pets too)

• Hand sanitiser

• Portable phone charger

• Cash

• Copies of important documents and photo ID.

Remember any medications you might need and keep your first aid kit, mask or face covering, torch, radio and batteries somewhere you can grab them in a hurry.

If you have special dietary needs, make sure you have the food you need in your grab bag too.

Our recent campaign to recruit new volunteers was a success and our latest cohort is undergoing several weeks of induction training. Towards the end of October, they’ll start working with their mentors in the office, putting theory into practice. We’re delighted to welcome them to our team.

No question is too big or too small to bring to CAB. To give you an idea of some of the questions we deal with on a daily basis, here are some examples.

• What can I do if I think my consumer rights have been breached?

• What kinds of behaviour are considered workplace bullying?

• How can I apply for a protection order?

• Now that I have a Resident Visa, when can I apply to become a permanent resident?

• Can I trim branches from the neighbour’s trees if they are hanging over my boundary?

• What will a building inspector look for when they do a pre-purchase inspection?

• I’ve left my job. Do I have to wait before I can get an unemployment benefit?

• When can the Police require me to stop my vehicle?

• A new business has opened in Kaiapoi. Do you have the phone number?

We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need.

So, if you or someone you know needs information, advice or support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

We’re here to help. All our services are free and confidential.

You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

New Hours Our office is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am–3.30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am–4.30pm.

Credit card or Pay Later plans?

Benefit Entitlements – Talk to a Financial Mentor Today

Here in New Zealand our Ministry of Social Development, through their Work and Income offices, are able to provide a range of support services, including financial assistance, to support a wide range of needs.

The types of things they can help with are:

Pay Later options might look very attractive, especially if you don’t have a credit card, or you’re already at your limit on your credit card, however there are still things you need to consider before committing yourself to one of these plans.

come talk to a Financial Mentor at BSNC who can explain all your options. They will help you select one that works best for your situation.

• If you’re not working, have lost your job and/or need help to get a job.

• If you have urgent or unexpected bills, or maybe a family emergency.

Some Pay Later plans might have no initial fees and no interest payments – it is still considered debt and you will need to pay on time to avoid additional fees (e.g. late payment fees).

• You need help with your living expenses.

• A range of services for Seniors.

• A range of services for Youth (16 to 19 year olds).

• Support with health and disability issues.

• Help for those caring for others.

Not all debt is bad debt, and in the right situation a Pay Later plan can be a good option for your situation. To ensure you’re getting independent advice on what is best for your situation, that’s where a Financial Mentor can help.

• Help and support for those raising children.

• Help for those who’ve had a change in relationship status and need extra support.

• Other benefits and entitlements.

When you set up your Pay Later plan, deductions will be made automatically from your nominated bank account, which means you won’t have these funds available for other expenses; and if you overdraw your account your bank may also charge additional fees.

The Work and Income website offers a lot of information on how to access help, including what support you can receive, as well as all the forms you might need to fillin.

Our Financial Mentors will help you prepare a budget to see what you can afford, and at the same time they’ll also give all your expenses and current repayments a review to check you are not paying too much in repayments to multiple providers.

Also be aware that while you don’t need a credit check to use a Pay Later plan, the debt will still appear on your credit history, and can affect your credit score if you miss a payment. (See here to check your credit score – it’s free: creditcheck.illion.co.nz)

https://workandincome.govt.nz/eligibility/index.html

Our Financial Mentors can also help you understand the Pay Later provider’s terms and conditions, and what options you have if you can’t make a payment.

However, you might be finding the website difficult to navigate, or you’re not sure if you are able to access support at all. You can talk to the great people at Work and Income, and they are only too happy to help. However, if you want to talk to a Financial Mentor first (it’s free and confidential), we can discuss your particular situation and support you with your conversations with Work and Income.

There is considerable temptation to buy items now, whether you’re buying in-store or online. Often the salesperson will try to ‘upsell’ you to a Pay Later plan – then they get their sales commission, and you are committed to extra repayments in your budget.

Talk to us today – we’re free, and we’re here to help you manage your money better.

Phone or email us to talk about your situation: 03 315 3505 or email: servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz

We’re on Facebook and bsnc.org.nz

In some cases we can even accompany you to Work and Income appointments. Or we can work with you on-line using your own MyMSD Log-in to help you navigate the large amount of information available, and help with filling-in forms.

Our Financial Mentors are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to help.

Our office is in the War Memorial Hall building, 1 Albert Street, Rangiora ( orange doorbell)

They understand the Work and Income system – and what they don’t know they will certainly find out for you.

If you want to discuss what might be a better solution for your situation, then

So, if you’d like some support to find out what benefits or extra support you can access, contact us to talk to a Financial Mentor today.

Peer Support

North Canterbury

Comcare Trust is a recovery focused organisation that provides free mental health and addiction services in the Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts for people with diagnosed mental illness and/or addiction . issues.

Peer Support: Peer Supporters in North Canterbury can meet regularly to provide one to one in person support as a fully mobile service within the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Comcare’s Peer Support Service supports people, through shared experience, to make sense of what is happening for them and how they want to move forward.

Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to le arn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places. Promoting a ‘trauma -informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing.

Referrals: Peer Support is for anyone aged 18+ who is experiencing mental distress and/or addictions. People can self -refer, be referred by SMHS, their GP or other community services. Visit www.comcare.org.nz /generic-referral to complete a referral.

For Peer Support, select “Support to understand how my mental health or addiction impacts me ” or “Support to understand my barriers to moving forward ” from the What support is required field.

Adopted

Loss, love, family and reunion | By

Adopted is the powerful and honest account of two of the thousands of children adopted during the era of closed adoption in Aotearoa New Zealand, between 1955 and the early 1980s.

Join us at the Rangiora Library, to hear co-author Brigitta Baker’s own story around closed adoption.

“One day I would like you to go to the places that I have been and to see the things that I have seen but without the nasty bits.”

Eighty years after World War Two, encouraged by his father’s stories of survival and determination, a son travels to Poland to follow his father’s experiences as a soldier and a Prisoner of War.

Wednesday 17 August 2022 • 6.30pm

Without the Nasty Bits weaves Norman’s words with Alan’s journey in a story that brings the past to life.
