FINALIST PROFILES INSIDE CELEBRATING WAIRARAPA SPORTING SUCCESS Watch online Monday 15th November 6pm. See page 3 for details

Welcome Welcome to the Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards. Covid-19 has, again, wreaked havoc on hosting an awards evening and we made the hard decision to not proceed with the Awards night. While the coronavirus made hosting an Awards evening impossible, it certainly does not take away from the raft of achievements that our sports people, administrators and volunteers have accomplished over the last couple of years. As a locally owned newspaper, we take our role of reporting sport seriously. We know how important sport is to you and strive to serve up a healthy dose of sport in every issue. Six days a week, we recognise and celebrate local sport – the wins, the close calls, and the disappointment of losing. These Awards are about celebrating the successes of our region’s top sportspeople over the past two years. The Awards also recognise the huge contributions made by sports administrators, clubs, and the hundreds of volunteers who give their time for free to make all this possible. Together, with the tremendous support of local businesses, we are incredibly proud to celebrate local success on and off the field again this year. We congratulate all finalists. Look out for the winners in the Times-Age next week.

Wairarapa Times-Age supporting sporting The Wairarapa Times-Age is thrilled to be celebrating the achievements of our top Wairarapa Sports people. Due to covid restrictions this year’s event will be held via a digital platform (see page 3 for details). Organised by the Wairarapa Times-Age, the awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of Wairarapa’s sporting community. Wairarapa has an incredibly rich sporting history for a small region, and recent achievements deserve their day in the sun just as much as their predecessors. This year’s awards recognise achievements in one of two years from April 1, 2019 to

March 31, 2020 or April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. There are 15 categories covering officials, teams, schools, volunteers and administrators. Finalists of the 15 award categories are determined by the nominations received by members of public. The judges narrow down the nominations to select three or four finalists per category. A combination of the public vote and judges vote determines the category winners. The public vote counted as a quarter of the total vote. An independent judging panel of three judges were appointed.

4 | WAIRARAPA TIMES-AGE SPORTS AWARDS 2020-2021

The winners of all 15 categories will automatically become finalists for the Supreme Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises the lifetime achievements of anyone involved in Wairarapa Sports. A relatively new award category is the People’s Choice Award where Wairarapa residents have their direct say as to what finalist they believe should be recognised for their contribution to local sport. The Awards would not be possible without the support from our sponsors, we value and thank you for your commitment to this event.

excellence since 1969 All category winners will receive a trophy along with a cash or voucher contribution kindly provided by each of our category sponsors.

In tennis, Gladstone School has won the primary championship grade for the past five years, with several of players in Wairarapa representative teams. The school was represented in several top three places at the Wairarapa swimming sports, and had two boys represent Wairarapa in cricket. Gladstone also fields a junior girls’ hardball cricket team, and continues to be strong in rugby, netball, and hockey.

Lakeview School For many of the 430 students at Lakeview sport is very important. It provides them with access to good role models, healthy/fun options in their spare time and to have fun while playing with their friends, and show their ability and shine where they are comfortable. Rippa Rugby, Yeah Girls Cricket, Wairarapa United Football in schools, Water Skills for Life, Small Hoops, Baseball, Kia Hakinakina, and Run Jump Throw and Get Set Go were some of the sport options provided. Lakeview also had 50 children plus adults take part in a 6.5km run in the Wellington Round the Bays in March 2020.

Masterton Intermediate School MIS organises and fields teams in a wide range of sports, such as basketball, hockey, netball, football, canoe polo, cricket, softball, tennis, and touch. MIS also competes in several local mini tournaments and individual competitions, including swimming, athletics, cross-country, badminton, rippa rugby, sevens rugby, rugby, ki o rahi, volleyball, triathlon, orienteering, boys’ cricket, mountain biking, waka ama and equestrian. St Matthew’s Collegiate School For a small school, of only 35 students, St Matthew’s Intermediate achieves some fantastic results. College of the Year An award recognising secondary schools for overall sporting excellence and participation.

Kuranui College A new strategy for sport in 2019 focussed on creating quality opportunities for all. A code of conduct to support students and volunteers, and a sports specific section for its website were created. That resulted in growth and participation in many sports such as smallbore shooting, tennis, mountain biking, volleyball, and chess, as well as the more traditional sports. Kuranui students excelled, representing Wairarapa in athletics, equestrian, cross-country, shooting, swimming, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, and football. Teams won Wairarapa competitions in hockey, rugby, cricket, and touch.

Rathkeale College

Rathkeale provides a wide range of sports opportunities for all 330 students, catering for participation through to those athletes who aim to perform at excellence level. The top rugby, football, and hockey teams compete in regional competitions, while other teams play in local leagues. Rathkeale also has three summer and three winter sports exchanges with traditional rivals. Those who have excelled at a high level include Sam Blundell & Joe Falloon [motocross], Kosta Mills & Jack Hunter [athletics], Jake Jonas [cricket], Riley Grover & Jonty Roubos [football], James Church [swimming], as well as many others.

St Matthew’s Collegiate School A highlight for St Matthew’s Collegiate is the 1st XI cricket team placing third in 2019, and second in 2020 at the NZ Secondary School Gillette Venus Cup finals. The team has also qualified for the 2021 finals. The hockey 1st XI contests the Intercity Championship, and the football 1st XI plays in the Manawatu competition. The top netball team were runners-up in the 2020 Wellington Regional Division Three competition and played in the Netball Wairarapa Premier One competition. Athletics, swimming, and shooting are also strong sports, with several students having competed at national level.

Wairarapa College Waicol has the largest number of participants and volunteers, and has tasted success at regional and national level. Waicol teams played competitions in Wellington, including the boys’ football 1ST XI and the rugby 1ST XV, both in premier grade, and the boys’ cricket 1ST XI [premier three]. The two hockey 1ST XIs played in the Intercity competition in 2020. The boys’ team won the Wellington championship in 2019. The ‘A’ netball team made the 2019 Premier One final, losing to Harcourts. Tui Dugan [football], Daisee Omundsen [boxing], and Mackenzie Tait [squash] are among the students who have achieved at a high level.

Junior Sports Team of the Year Open to any team of primary school students that have achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.

Featherston Amateur Wrestling Club The Featherston Wrestling Club’s junior team continues to punch above their weight at national level. Wrestlers won 10 medals [six gold] at the 2019 NZ Club Champs, eight medals [three gold] at both the 2019 and 2020 National Championships. Another 15 medals [eight gold] were won at the 2019 North Island Champs, and five medals [four gold] at the 2019 South Island Championships. The team won the Best Sportsmanship Award at the 2019 national championships.

Masterton Intermediate School Baseball Team

MIS won the Wellington Region Intermediate Schools’ Baseball Cup in March 2021 with a dominant display in the tournament played at Fraser Park Lower Hutt. The team won all four games, scoring 43 runs and conceding only five. MIS started with a 12-1 win over Newlands Intermediate, followed by a 9-1 defeat of Naenae Intermediate, to qualify for the semifinal, where they beat Raroa Intermediate 12-0. In the final, they defeated Evans Bay Intermediate 10-3. The hallmark of the team was its versatility and teamwork, with five pitchers used and all 11 players making valuable contributions.

St Matthew’s Collegiate School Primary Cricket Team St Matthew’s won the Central Districts playoffs to qualify for the 2020 ANZ Shield national intermediate finals, which are contested by the winners of each major association’s playoffs. At the tournament, St Matthew’s came up against some very experienced teams from much bigger schools, who have played in the national finals on numerous occasions. St Matthew’s had one win and four losses, and finished sixth. The inexperienced team showed great enthusiasm and were rewarded for their sportsmanship with the Spirit of Cricket Award.

Wairarapa Cricket 2020 Year 8 Boys Team

They narrowly missed out on overall tournament honours at the annual Hawke’s Bay tournament in 2020 with four wins from five games. Almost unheard of for Wairarapa teams, they defeated some of the powerhouse teams in junior cricket – Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington Gold and Wellington Black. Their only slip-up came in their final match against Mt Maunganui. Wairarapa started the tournament with T20 wins over Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. In the 50-over matches, Wairarapa beat Wellington Gold and Wellington Black, but lost to Mt Maunganui to finish runners-up.

Rathkeale defeated Hastings BHS 3-1, but lost 2-1 to Napier BHS for a respectable 14TH in their first entry in the top competition.

St Matthew’s Collegiate School 1ST XI Cricket St Matthew’s have exceeded expectations with two top three finishes at the Gillette Venus Cup national playoffs over the past two cricket seasons. St Matthew’s finished third at the 2019 tournament, but bettered that at the 2020 tournament. They won four of their five games in round-robin play to Christchurch Girls High School. The two teams met in the final, with Christchurch GHS coming out on top. St Matthew’s qualified for the 2021 finals, by winning the Central Districts playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Wairarapa Pony Club Mounted Games Team The Wairarapa Pony Club Mounted Games team, representing the Wellington-Wairarapa region, won the NZPCA Mounted Games Championship, held at the Solway Showgrounds in March 2021. Senior Sports Team of the Year Open to any senior team that have achieved a high standard of participation in any sport.

Dalefield Premier Men’s Hockey Team Dalefield won the 2019 and 2020 Hockey Wellington Premier Men’s Championships, their third and fourth titles in six years. In 2019, Dalefield beat defending champions Hutt United 2-1 in atrocious conditions. The win was all the more special, with player-coach Dane Lett away with the Black Sticks. Dalefield achieved their first unbeaten season in 2020, winning all 14 games, culminating in a 3-1 win over surprise finalists Harbour City. Dane Lett, Trent Lett, Jordan Cohen, and Benedict van Woerkom represented Central Falcons, who won the Premier Hockey League.

Dalefield Premier Women’s Hockey Team Dalefield won the 2020 Hockey Wellington Premier Women’s Championship beating fierce rivals Hutt United in a tense final, 1-0 in a shootout, after the scores were locked together at 2-2 at fulltime. Goalkeeper Amy Rossiter-Stead was the hero for Dalefield, saving all five of Hutt’s shootout attempts, while Katherine van Woerkom held her nerve and converted her attempt in the last play of the game. The championship was Dalefield’s first since 2017, and third in five years. Felicity Reidy played for the champion Central Falcons in the Premier Hockey League.

Masterton Golf Duncan Cup Team Masterton won the prestigious Duncan Cup for the first time in the club’s history in 2019, beating New Judgeford at Royal Wellington. Masterton dominated the morning foursomes 4-1, and won the singles 6-4 for a 10-5 victory. The team completed the double in 2020, convincingly beating Shandon 9-6 in very wet and windy conditions at Paraparaumu Beach. Again Masterton led 4-1 after the morning foursomes, and they wrapped up their second title, with two matches still on the course. The Duncan Cup is regarded by many as New Zealand’s toughest interclub competition to win.

Wairarapa Men’s Bowls Team Wairarapa belied their underdog status to win a bronze medal at the National Intercentre Championships in Wellington in March 2021. Wairarapa had never previously qualified for the top eight, but in the end came within a whisker of reaching the final. The team made the quarterfinals with wins over Nelson, Hawke’s Bay, Central Otago, and Kapiti Coast in pool play. In the quarters they defeated Manawatu. That set up a semifinal against Auckland and Wairarapa pushed their international-laden opponents all the way, only going down off the very last bowl.

ATHLETICS

ATHLETICS

FOOTBALL

Whether it is his beloved Pioneer Rugby Club, a Wairarapa-Bush representative game, netball, or touch, Blue is a familiar face around the sports fields and courts. For more than 20 years, Blue has set up the Jeans Street grounds for Pioneer’s premier games, and then he’s on the sidelines, usually carrying the water bottles. During the rep season, Blue is there again helping out with the water and anything else the team need doing. On top of that Blue readies the Colombo Road netball courts for play every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Carol has filled many roles for ACM Harriers over the years, however, in the past two-three years she has taken on more and more roles, all of which have been efficiently and successfully implemented. At club events, Carol is usually first to arrive and last to leave. As timekeeping, she regularly fills in as race convenor. Carol has also drawn up club programmes, updates the running section of the website and the Facebook page, is the driving force behind the popular Times-Age 5km series, and organises the club’s road and cross-country championships.

Liam is nominated for his selfless volunteering to help local athletes. Liam pays his own way to events, including major meets such as the NZ Track and Field Championships, Potts Classic, and Porritt Classic. He then spends most of his day helping warm up athletes so they are ready to compete. He sorts out niggles, helps calm them down and focus. Without Liam most of the young athletes would have no idea what they’re doing. Liam also helps at events in Masterton, often arriving at 6.45am and not leaving until after 4.30pm when all the gear is put away.

Kevin is a permanent fixture at Wairarapa United home games. Whether it’s preparing everything for game day from moving the goal posts into position, putting on the nets, placing the sideline flags, and making sure the changing rooms are clean and ready for the teams and officials, Kevin is there. And when it comes to taking it all down again, Kevin is there again. In 2020, Kevin was a finalist for Capital Football Volunteer of the Year. Although he missed out on the main award he was presented with a Capital Football Club Service Award.

He is involved as President of the club, leading a proactive committee who look to advance several different areas of participation. Mark also undertakes the role of junior coordinator for the club, overseeing 13 different teams, as well as actively coaching two of these sides himself. In addition, Mark is a standing Wairarapa Cricket umpire, and undertakes all umpiring appointments throughout the region.

Kath has worked tirelessly towards building a successful netball programme at Wairarapa College – the largest netball club in Wairarapa. She has given many years of service coordinating around 150 girls to play in the Netball Wairarapa premier and senior competitions. Kath manages Waicol’s netball umpiring academy, which was formed to train aspiring umpires and to assist students who want to give umpiring a go but are not confident in their knowledge of the rules or are put off by the thought of dealing with issues such as difficult spectators.

Dave is in his fourth year serving as chairman of Wairarapa Cricket and under his auspices the organisation has gone from strength to strength. The board of governance now has highly effective structures and policies from which to operate, and to support and empower the operations staff. This has led to increased impact in several areas within the region and recognition of Wairarapa Cricket at Central Districts and NZ Cricket level. Dave has overseen this with positivity and passion that is contagious for other volunteers in the game.

The go-to person for the Wairarapa Football Referees Association for the past 10 years. Steve’s roles include organising coaching of referees, running information sessions on the laws of the game, providing advice to all who wish to take up the whistle, and finding and appointing referees to all levels in Wairarapa from Central League, W-League, capital leagues, local league, and college games. He has also served as chairman of the Wellington Refereeing Committee, and has sat on the NZ Referees Committee. He organises and runs fortnightly refereeing training workshops.

Mark became an A Grade Athletics track official in 2020, specialising in the photo finish and chief judge roles. He is recognised as one of the top three in New Zealand with this technical aspect of photo finish. Mark has officiated at numerous national events in photo finish, including NZ Secondary School and North Island Secondary School Championships, as well as prestigious meets such as the Potts Classic, Cooks Classic, Porritt Classic, and Capital Classic. As well as major events, he officiates at local school athletics meets and other Wairarapa events.

In 2019, Rebecca became the first woman to control a Ranfurly Shield challenge when she had the whistle for the Otago defence against North Otago in Oamaru. She followed that up by being the first woman to officiate a Mitre 10 Cup game in the Hawke’s Bay v Southland game in Napier. In 2020, Rebecca was named on the Assistant Referees panel for the Super Rugby Championship, only for the season to fall victim to the covid-19 pandemic. Rebecca retired from first class refereeing in early 2021 to pursue business interests.

In 2020, Alistair refereed his sixth consecutive premier club rugby final, controlling a tense match, won by Marist 39-37 with a last minute penalty over Greytown. Alistair’s consistent form led to a return to first class rugby, for the first time in five years, for the truncated lower North Island Heartland series. He was in the middle for the inaugural match for the Lochore-Meads Scroll played between Wairarapa-Bush and King Country. That was followed by the Wai-Bush v Horowhenua-Kapiti game, his 16th first-class game.

Peter is Hockey Wairarapa’s leading umpire. He regularly controls Wellington premier men’s and women’s games, as well as officiating in local league games. On numerous days Pete will umpire two Wellington premier games back to back, with only minutes between the two. Pete’s consistency led to him umpiring at the 2019 National Association tournament in Tauranga, where he performed with distinction. He was again appointed to the 2020 National Association tournament, only for it to be cancelled because of covid-19.

Mark has coached numerous Wairarapa athletes to success at Athletics NZ Championships, NZ Secondary School Championships, and Colgate Games. They include Liam Lamb, who won the 2019 national U20 3000m title, and qualified in the 5000m for the World University Games, Matt Rodger, Jared Yee, Jack Lewington, and Mia and John Hewson, to name a few. He has also coached local athletes to achieve their own personal goals. Mark is a lead coach for Run Jump Throw and Get Set Go courses delivering to 1700 children over 2019 -20, and is a coach developer-trainer for Athletics Wellington.

Joe coached WairarapaBush to the semifinals of the 2019 Meads Cup – the top four in the Heartland Rugby Championship. Wai-Bush won six of their eight round-robin games, including winning the prized Bruce Steele Cup from Whanganui, and qualified for a semifinal away to North Otago. The green and reds were unlucky not to progress to the final, going down 25-27 to the eventual champions. Tristan Flutey, James Goodger, Lachie McFadzean, and Tim Priest were included in the NZ Heartland XV. Joe retired after coaching the side to four wins from five games in the truncated 2020 representative season.

Dane coached Dalefield to win the Wellington Hockey Premier Men’s Championship in 2019 and 2020. Dane took over the coaching of Dalefield in 2019 and made an immediate impact, calling on his Black Sticks international experience, to lead Dalefield to their first premier championship in three years, beating defending champions Hutt United 2-1 in the final. In 2020 Dane coached Dalefield to back-to-back titles, and their fourth in six seasons, with a 3-1 victory over Harbour City in the final. Dane led the team to a rare perfect season, winning all 14 games, many by wide margins.

Michael coached Dalefield to a surprise win in the 2020 Wellington Hockey Women’s Premier Championship. Dalefield won the decider over Hutt United 1-0 in a shootout after the scores were locked together 2-2 at fulltime. The win followed a loss to Hutt in the first round of playoffs, forcing Dalefield into a sudden death match against Harbour City, which they won 3-0. The victory was Dalefield’s second with Michael in charge, an outstanding achievement for someone whose main sport is rugby in which he represented Wairarapa-Bush in 20 games.

Ocean has been selected in the NZ Maori Secondary School in 2020 and 2021, the latter as captain. In January 2021, Ocean made her debut for the Central Hinds in the T20 Super Smash against the Otago Sparks in Dunedin. Ocean captained CD U19 side to second place at their 202021 national tournament, and was part of the team that won the 2019-20 national title. Ocean is a key member of the Wairarapa Korus, and the St Matthew’s 1st XI that finished third at the 2019 Secondary School nationals, and second in 2020.

Jake has excelled in recent seasons, being the stand-out member of the Rathkeale College 1st XI Boys cricket side, a leader in the Wairarapa U17 side, and being selected for the Central Districts U17 side. Jake finished the 202021 season having scored 872 runs including three centuries for Rathkeale, averaging 59 for Central Districts, and 58.5 for the Wairarapa senior side including 70 not out v Hawke’s Bay. In that game he saved the game, in a defiant six-hour effort, after he was struck a severe blow with the first delivery he faced. Jake also performed with distinction for Red Star in the Coastal Challenge.

Jonty has been an exceptional player for the Rathkeale 1st XI and for the Wairarapa United Central League team over recent years. A creative attacking midfielder or striker with speed to burn, Jonty has also played at National League Level for Tasman United and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves. Jonty was a vital member of the Wairarapa United side that won the satellite section of the National U19 tournament in Napier in 2020, and the Rathkeale team that finished 14th at the Lotto Premier National Secondary School tournament in 2019.

Jayden was the only Wairarapa-Bush player named in a Hurricanes secondary school squad. Including a training camp for the growth of under-18 Hurricanes talent that provides opportunities for player selection into High Performance pathways. An outstanding season for Rathkeale in the Central North Island rugby championship and traditional fixtures. Jayden starred with two tries in Rathkeale’s 32-14 triumph over Wairarapa College, their first win in the local derby in 13 years. An outstanding athlete, and represented Rathkeale at the National and North Island Secondary School Track and Field Championships.

Lifetime Achievement Award An award recognising the lifetime achievements of anyone in Wairarapa Sports.

Murray Nielsen 2019 Award Recipient

The 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, the late Murray Nielsen, began his love affair with hockey when he was 10 years old. Nielsen was involved with the Dalefield Hockey Club for 64 years and was aiming at 70 years, before he passed away in May 2019 after a long battle with cancer. Nielsen registered for the club’s senior team in 1962 and played hockey until the age of 60. In 1962, he joined the executive committee of Wairarapa Schoolboys’ Hockey, and became president in 1984, a position he held until the association disbanded when various hockey associations merged to form the Wairarapa Hockey Association [WHA]. Nielsen was a committee member of the WHA from 1989 to 1993, vice-president from 1994-1995, and president from 1996-1998. He was made a life member of WHA in 2010. Nielsen coached, played, and umpired throughout his hockey career. He began coaching at 15 and went on to coach at representative level in various age groups. He was also tournament controller for at least four regional and national tournaments, including national secondary schools’ and National U-18 girls’ tournaments. Nielsen was a committee member of the Dalefield Club in various capacities for almost 60 years and made a life member in 1990. In 2007, Nielsen was awarded the NZ Hockey Gold Service Award for his services to the sport. Nielsen had a special interest in ‘grassroots’ sports, especially junior hockey. He was a quiet, thoughtful man and very well-respected, and his wise counsel guided the region’s hockey community for many years.

2019 Award Recipient Black Stick and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Dane Lett was the winner of the Supreme Award at the 2019 Wairarapa Times-Age Sports’ Awards. After being in the international wilderness for three years Lett was recalled to the Black Sticks in 2017. That led to a long tenure in the silver fern, culminating in being part of the team that won Silver at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April 2018, losing to Australia in the final. Lett was MVP for the National Hockey League tournament in September 2018, in which he captained the winning Capital Cobras’ side. As well Lett was the player-coach of the Dalefield men’s side that has become a dominant force in the Wellington Premiership. He was integral in the revival of the Wairarapa-based club, which had languished in the bottom echelons of the top Wellington championship for many years. At the time of the 2019 awards Dalefield had won two championships, in 2015 and 2016, and finished runner-up in 2017 and 2018. In November 2018 Lett played in the Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India, and was a key component of the team that participated in the inaugural World Hockey Pro League in 2019.
