Sexual abuse addressed at Vatican City Danisani Kubayi @danisani_kubayi
Pope Francis summoned the senior Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church to the Vatican City for a three-day summit from the 21-24 February. The purpose of this summit was to address the sexual abuse allegations that the church has been subjected to through the years. The Catholic church has been embroiled in child abuse allegations for decades, specifically regarding the abuse of young boys. Pope Francis has made it clear that he intends to tackle this issue since his election by the college of cardinals in 2013. The vice director of the Vatican press office, Paloma García Ovejero, told the National Catholic Register that the main agenda of the summit was the “prevention of abuse of minors and vulnerable adults”. The decision to hold the summit was announced last year in
September after Pope Francis met with his Cardinal Council. The Catholic Church has received immense pressure from the media, the American government and the law enforcement to deal with these issues in previous years. The National Catholic Reporter claims that a document was released in August last year by a former Vatican ambassador, Archbishop Carlo Vigano. The document implicates not only the church but also the now ex-cardinal, Theodore McCarrick, who had been accused of sexually abusing a teenager nearly five decades ago and covering up the scandal. This cover-up scandal has brought the Roman Catholic Church and Pope Francis under the scrutiny of the world, pushing for reformation in the church. How the Pope and the Church intend to deal with the perpetrators of these alleged crimes remains to be seen. Sources: BBC News

China’s high-security systems threaten Muslims Thato Mokhomong @ ___t.hato
China has invented an intrusive artificial intelligence surveillance system embedded with CCTV cameras to track movements of citizens around the country. The system makes use of software called Ensemble Net to scan CCTV footage for people’s body structures and facial appearances. The program is allegedly used to target a grouping of people referred to as “Uighurs”, who are predominantly Muslim folk. The program is reportedly 90% accurate. The extent to which the surveillance is targeting Muslims is unprecedent-
ed. Approximately, 22-25 million Muslims living in Xinjiang in the North-Western region of China are experiencing privacy invasion and human rights violations. The stated reasoning for the implementation of the security system is the expansion of extremism. The surveillance system has become known for tracing and tracking every movement Muslims make including the visits to their mosques. Living in China is a nightmare for Muslims because they are seen as a threat to the country. Motherboard, a US-based tech website, reported “the government forced the Xinjiang residents to download Jing Wang, a high-security app that scans devices for files and data transfers. It facilitates the automatic detection of terrorism, illegal content, and files on mobile
phones”. Business Insider reported that China intends on forcefully tracking the Muslims by installing QR codes connected to their homes. The Chinese government has received international scrutiny over its treatment off Uighurs in Xinjiang. The QR codes are connected to the residents’ homes to scan all their details including: the number of people living in that household, retrieval of personal information, identity card numbers, ethnicity, home address and more. Although the app might be seen as subjugation of Chinese citizens, it is argued by the Communist government of China that the surveillance is a strategic and highly technological security system that prevents terrorism.
Rocket launch ended with a bang Ipeleng Mafora @Ser_ipeleng
Students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) experienced failure when they attempted to launch their rocket, the Phoenix 1B Mark 2, on 18 February 2019. The rocket was set to rise to an altitude of 15 km, traveling twice the sound of speed, but instead, it only reached 20 meters into the sky before its engines failed. As a result, it crashed to the ground and caused an explosion in which it shattered into pieces that ultimately damaged the launch equipment. According to Business Insider, if all had gone to plan the rocket would have beaten a South African record as being the highest hybrid rocket that was ever launched to an altitude of 15 km. The rocket was designed and developed by UKZN Aerospace Systems Research Group (ASReG). The plan to build the Phoenix 1B was initiated by the university in 2010. The idea behind the development of
the Phoenix 1B was to meet the expectations of the African scientific community to build a hybrid rocket. They received funding from the Department of Science and Technology to support the quest for creating a sounding rocket to transfer materials into space. A sounding rocket is an instrument carrying rocket, designed to take measurements and perform scientific experiments while busy with sub-orbital flight. Dr. Michael Brooks, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering and the leader of the UKZN ASReG, stated that an investigation into the launch failure of the 90 kg, 5-meter-long rocket will be undertaken. They are currently focusing their attention on what went wrong with the rocket launch. Another rocket being developed is the Phoenix-1B Mark 1 which will undergo flight testing in 2020. Deep ocean treasures of SA Ipeleng Mafora @Ser_ipeleng
Just recently, the French energy giant Total made a ground-breaking discovery of a huge gas field some 200 km off the coast of South Africa. It is not yet clear as to how big the discovery is, however Total hinted that it could be around one billion barrels of global resources, gas and condensate light oil. To get a clear picture, South Africa’s total refinery capacity is 700 000 barrels of oil per day. This, however, was not Total’s first attempt at finding a source. In 2014, their aspirations
were thwarted as their machinery failed courtesy of extreme weathers. To better understand this, Wapad interviewed Henno Havenga, North-West University (NWU) PhD student in environmental sciences, who indicated that “the region’s extreme winter weather is due to the influence of the mid-latitude cyclones that propagates north during the Southern Hemisphere winter”. “These systems are greatly influenced by the Antarctic region and the cold Southern Ocean which does bring about heavy seas and extreme winter weather events. These are all considerations that will have to be taken into account long before any sort of exploitation will take place,” said Havenga. This will, as anticipated, usher in a wave of “good news” in the country
that is in desperate need of it. Trillions of rands are expected to flood the economy. According to Dr Gabila Nubong from the NWU’s school of economics and management sciences, this find could stimulate economic growth, and lead to direct and indirect job creation. The find could be another pull factor for new investments. Most notable is the find’s potential to relief Eskom. A possible negative consequence of the gas find could be the pollution of the ocean. The campaign manager of Greenpeace South Africa, Melita Steele said, “projects like this could always have spillages which could be catastrophic to the marine life, which could also to major losses for fisherman around the area”.

Environment week – #GoGreen project taken to greater heights Thato Mokhomong @___t.hato
On 18 February 2019, the NorthWest University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus Student Campus Council (SCC) Current Affairs committee hosted the yearly Value Your Environment Week initiative. The aim was to reintroduce envi-
ronmental awareness with a unique approach to address the current situation of power insufficiency and other environmental predicaments South Africa is faced with. Over the years, the #GoGreen week would base its initiative on using plants to create awareness of the responsibility to protect the environment. The committee suggested that a new strategy must be incorporated not only to send a message but to make it
more interesting. The Mr & Miss Value Your Environment fashion show and the Slam Poetry sessions were not only for entertainment but also a focus on the importance of sustainable development. The SCC Current Affairs committee aims to partner with the internal NWU infrastructure and environmental experts for the realisation of their plans to plant trees, install recycling facilities and to save water
and electricity. Lerato Nyelele, chairperson of SCC Current Affairs said, “I realised there are many challenges that need to be approached with effort. The committee has been working extra hard with the support from the university to conserve the environment and integrate the students, lecturers, staff members and the maintenance staff in this Value Your Environment Week
initiative.” She added that “not only is this project an on-campus focus, it also addresses the off-campus residents to take part and save water and electricity and participate in the sustainable development project. In this way, the initiative will produce exceptional results”.

Daar
The much-anticipated Budget speech of 2019 was delivered by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni amidst the backdrop of an election year. It was expected that Mboweni would follow President Cyril Ramaphosa in his opening of parliament speech with the main topic being “renewal and a new dawn for South Africa”. The speech was built on six pillars designed to improve the economy. These pillars’ ultimate goals are to combat corruption, tackle failing stateowned institutions and to accelerate economic growth in a stagnant economy. One of the major outcomes of the speech was the restructuring of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), following the turbulent tenure of former commissioner, Tom

One of the major highlights of the Budget speech was the increase in state subsidies, such as pension and child support grants. This was a
welcomed announcement considering the many South Africans who depend on these schemes. Minister Mboweni said that the “essence of the budget speech was planting a seed for renewal and growth”. While the members of the ruling party praised and applauded the speech, opposition parties did not react in the same manner. The official leader of the opposition party, Mmusi Maimane, said the speech offered no tangible plans while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) issued a statement that “the ANC collective have run out of ideas on how to create jobs”. The party famous for its red berets, decided to boycott the budget speech. Using the #Gigabamustfall, they tweeted that “the EFF rejects Malusi Gigaba and will boycott the Budget Vote if it is him who will be presenting it”.

OK Foods and other shops on the Bult Lizaan Snyman @lizaan09
Over the holidays new shops have opened on the Bult, while others have closed, moved or have been renovated. OK Foods, being one of the major additions, is currently under construction and opens in April replacing the Friendly in the Cachet Park shopping centre. OK Foods is a new concept, as the one opening in the North West is only the second of its type. The first opened
last year December, in Zimbali. Joan Coetzer, OK Foods owner, said, “The shop is being renovated to have the latest technology and equipment”. “Students can still use their student cards to pay, a loyalty card will be available and we are planning on having a courier system in the area.” The shop will also have a waterrefill station, a fast food and a fresh cooked food section, a fresh fruit and vegetable section with a variety of fresh salads, a larger liquor store, Moneymarket and much more. Coetzer added, “There will be opportunities for students to work part-time at OK Foods from timeto-time, especially during the busier
times of the year”. Mothusi Mere, a second-year, BCom management science with communication management student,

money, especially in my case where my parents are supporting three children”. Besides OK Foods opening, there are other places that have opened. Havannah Bar & Grill opened next to Texas Rock Bar, with its entrance next to the Bult Mini Market and take away that is currently being renovated and can be found next to Stadium Food Court and below Texas Rock Bar. Fine Things, in the Cachet Park shopping centre, has moved over to Fishmonger (fish @ Fine Things) with a new place opening soon in its old place. Then Oukraal restaurant has expanded taking over the space where Muchies
Italian and Swiss Ice Cream was and Muchies moved next to Boere Sjiek. Wakaberry has closed with no plans of a new place opening in its place any time soon.

In minder as ʼn oggend was Koma se sukses alles behalwe “blou”.
Hul album se bekendstelling was 15 Februarie by Platteland in Centurion,
Pretoria.
An evening with Bruckner Big Band Johan Rousseau @one_tasty_johansalad
The Bruckner University Big Band performed at Snowflake in Potchefstroom, on 19 February, as part of their South African tour. The evening started at 18:00, with the venue packed to the brim with people. Wapad had the chance to speak to the director of the band, Christian Radovan. Explain the big band daddy as your title on Facebook: I actually never saw that before (laughing), but I assume I was given that name because I run everything and I’m in charge. Why did the band choose to visit Potchefstroom? Potchefstroom was just a coincidence. We came in contact with people at the conservatory and they introduced us to this venue. Where is your next stop on the tour? The tour consists of twelve concerts. We started in Maputo, Pretoria and then Johannesburg and now we are in

Potchefstroom. And next we are going to Sasolburg, Bloemfontein, PortElizabeth and then we drive down to Stellenbosch to play at the Oude Libertas. Is there any South African musicians that you would like to collaborate with currently? Seven or eight years ago I actually performed with Abdulla Ibrahim [South African pianist and composer]. He put a big band together and I was part of that. But we also work some
South African tunes into our songs that people would recognise, and the band loves to play it. We play one song called Yakhal Inkomo by Winston ‘Mankunku’ Ngozi where our singer sings it in Xhosa. The band took their place on stage and started their first song with a bang, the music was fast and energetic yet with a sense of class. The first song lasted for approximately 5 min and when they finished Mr. Radovan introduced them all and
stated what a privilege it is to be in “Potchefstroom”, pronounced with an offbeat Austrian accent but still beautifully. With the formalities concluded, the band jumped into their next song. After the second song their singer Christina Kerschner was welcomed to the stage. Her presence boosted the entire evening with her elegance and beauty. Later that evening Anna Davel also joined the stage to perform with the band.
The evening flew by as everyone had their eyes glued to the stage. After Mr. Radovan announced that the show was coming to an end, several music students of the conservatory joined the stage for the final song. Some notable South African melodies were played at the end of the night as the Bruckner University Big Band blessed us with township jazz. A truly spectacular way to end a perfect performance.
Power napping to power through Megan Gittins @megan_gittins
When we were toddlers, we fought against the inevitability of nap time. As stressed-out students, we relish it. Thanks to science, we can now prove to parents that napping is not a sure sign of laziness but rather a tactic used to think smarter, not harder. According to a recent study conducted by the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, daytime napping can have cognitive benefits such as increased information retention. James Cousins, the lead researcher of the study, suggested that taking a nap after learning

detailed information “provides the equivalent benefits to memory as when that period of time is spent revising the same material,” making frantically cramming and scheduled breaks unnecessary. Naps can also leave an over-worked brain feeling rejuvenated, restoring “lowered levels of alertness,” Cousins said.
However, Cassie Hilditch, from the Centre for Sleep Research in Australia, warns against the dangers of napping for too long. “Sleep inertia, the period of grogginess and impaired performance experienced after waking, is a potential side effect of napping.” Instead, she recommends napping for 30 minutes or less to
avoid this side effect. Amber Tietzel and Leon Lack, from Flinders University in Australia, reinforces this and suggest the perfect timing should be “a brief afternoon nap of precisely 10 minutes,” that will significantly improve alertness and cognitive performance. If this isn’t reason enough for a quick afternoon session, then let
Winston Churchill convince you with his wise words: “Nature has not intended mankind to work from eight in the morning until midnight without that refreshment of blessed oblivion which, even if it only lasts twenty minutes, is sufficient to renew all the vital forces.”

How safe are artificial sweeteners? Corine Raath @corineraath
Obesity is an international problem and sugar is deemed as one of the main culprits of this epidemic. An alternative presented itself in the form of artificial sweeteners but suspicions are surfacing that this alternative is more than just sweet. It is also potentially dangerous. On 21 August 2018, the City of Tshwane tweeted “According to Healthy Living Alliance
almost 70% of women and 39% of men are overweight in South Africa”. They added that “the country has the highest obesity rate in sub-Saharan Africa”. This shocking statistic enforces the idea to reduce our sugar intake. South Africa has recently introduced sugar tax. Many shoppers have opted for the zero sugar variations of their favourite products since it is now cheaper. This is done by using artificial sweeteners, specifically aspartame. However, there is controversy over how safe these substances are. There are different types of artificial sweeteners. The first group is sugar
alcohols like xylitol and sorbitol. These sweeteners are made by attaching alcohol molecules to sugar. The body cannot process these molecules and therefore they can

The Girl from St. Agnes: Your next binge Karlien Meiring @karlien_meiring
By now, The Girl from St. Agnes has the country talking. The murder mystery series is a collaboration between the award-winning Quizzical Pictures and Showmax. The number of unique viewers in the first 24 hours exceeded that of the previous record-holder, the Showmax Original comedy series; Tali’s Wedding Diary. Speaking of, Candice Fangueiro, head of content for the Connected Video division of MultiChoice, which houses Showmax, said: “We’re over the moon. This shows that local content is a major differentiator and that African productions can not only
hold their own against the best in the world but they can actually come out on top.” “We didn’t expect so many people to have already watched the entire series. That’s eight one-hour episodes in less than 24 hours – a serious testament to how binge-worthy the show is.” In The Girl from St. Agnes a popular student is found dead at a prestigious all-girls boarding school in the Midlands. The police are quick to declare the death of Lexi Summerveld (Jane de Wet) a tragic accident, but drama teacher Kate Ballard (Nina Milner) doesn’t believe it. The more she investigates, the more Kate realises that she didn’t really know Lexi or the school at all. Behind the imposing walls of St. Agnes, Lexi’s killer won’t be the only person exposed. One of the producers, Harriet
Gavshon, said it’s a “universal story set in an environment that’s recognisable” to an international audience, even though “some things are very peculiar to South Africa.” The characters are layered, and we’re often caught having empathy for characters who in other contexts we may despise. Head writer, Gillian Breslin, describes the cast as “magic and lightning in a bottle”. The strong production values and a beautifully curated soundtrack make for an incredibly immersive experience that will definitely leave you watching “just one more episode” to see how the show reveals the many secrets of St. Agnes. What makes The Girl from St. Agnes an even more outstanding TV series is that it’s commissioned, produced, written and directed by women.
sulphate. It is cheap to produce and very convenient to add to processed foods to reduce the price. There were claims that these chemical sweeteners can lead to cancer but they have since been deemed safe for general use by the department of health. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), “Most of the studies have limitations such as effects shown only in animals, not in human, small sample size, high doses, statistically non-significant or borderline significant.” On the other hand, the benefits of artificial sweeteners include
healthier teeth and aiding in weight loss. These sweeteners also offer an alternative if you suffer from diabetes. If you are wary of the safety of these substances, you can always opt for more natural sugar alternatives such as stevia which is extracted from leaves or monk fruit extract which originates from China. Small amounts of honey, maple syrup and coconut sugar are also alright to consume. The key with sweeteners is: everything in moderation.
Bobaas-braaibrood wys beurtkrag wie’s baas Corine Raath @corineraath

Meraki Asseblief. My oë soek altyd deur die mense.
Meraki (v). To do something with soul, creativity or love; to put something of yourself into your work.

s you can see in the above definition, Meraki is all about soulful creativity and love. In this creative corner, Wapad wants to celebrate students’ art in all kinds of formats, as students don’t receive enough credit for their hard work and talent. Whether you are an art student, or you just enjoy art in your free time, this corner is a creative space for students to express their inner love for their own personal kind of art. We want to encourage amateur artists to keep on persevering to become professional one day, or just to make another soul smile because of
their art. Therefore, students can feel free to send in their diverse artworks to us at wapad@nwu.ac.za, where it will be shared either via our Facebook page or a printed edition of the newspaper. The only Meraki artist for this edition is Danika Groenewald, a second-year in psychology and geography with environmental studies. She wrote an Afrikaans poem titled “Asseblief”.
Ouma, asseblief.

Selfs oor ’n gunstelingmusiekgroep (lees Spoegwolf).
Does tradition equal pride? Annami den Heyer @annami_dh
As a North-West University student, you would know that tradition has been a buzz word for the past few months. To define tradition, we must first break down any prejudice connotations we may have with the word, tradition must be set apart from culture, language and race. When talking about tradition on the campus, one should think of it as something constructive. It is supposed to develop us as students and not only have an impact on an individual, but on a group, meaning the whole residence or university. In whatever way it may be implemented it must have a positive outcome. Each person has their own point of view on things, which means when a tradition is implemented it must take everyone in to account. How will different personalities or upbringings react to tradition, is it helpful, will it have a positive outcome? These are all questions that should be asked when implementing a tradition. If the answers to these questions aren’t a positive response, the tradition shouldn’t necessarily be taken away; it should just be adjusted so that it fits into the definition. Tradition can be implemented by using group activities where
everybody is included, together with equitable access, one should always have the choice to take part or not. It must be future orientated, something that is sustainable. There should be meaning to tradition; we should
know our history, to not repeat faults in the past. Tradition is pride and pride is what is necessary for the North-West University to stand out above other universities.

For some as I hear from close friends, a perfect weekend is bottle of wine while relaxing and unwinding the stress of the week that went by. But then there is us, the non-alcoholic friends, who prefer going the other route. If you’re one of us, you are probably getting the questions ‘So what do you do to have fun?’ ‘But why don’t you drink alcohol?’, but in fact we actually just have plain simple fun like anyone else, besides being intoxicated. Let us start with, we get really good sleep. When we do go out, we never find the need to be drunk to have fun and enjoy the evening. My friends often tell me when we plan a night out ‘But you’re not going to be drunk so how are you going to have fun?’ and then later in the evening, I become the person that ends up holding their hands home. So, we become ‘the responsible one’. Other than that, we dance to good music
and make as good jokes as the drunk person seated next to me. “I don’t drink alcohol because it is unhealthy and I also don’t find the need to put my body through something that is against my principles,” according to a source that prefers to stay anonymous. Ice cream, junk food and series have to
be the ultimate ‘sipping on wine’ for us sobers. So next time instead of all the questions, know that we have fun and we enjoy this lifestyle because we have chosen it for reasons which differ from person to person.

New world-class astroturf for NWU Hockey Lizaan Snyman @lizaan09
Last year September the project to upgrading the North-West University (NWU) hockey facilities started to take shape. As part of the NWU macro maintenance plan the astroturf and its facilities must be upgraded every ten years and it was long overdue this time around. The upgrade will be worth an estimated cost of R 9.5 million. It would be the only facility in South Africa with two International Hockey Federation (FIH) accredited blue
turfs and house internal services of world class standard, such as the HPI and Sports village, making it attractive for big events. Besides the astroturf being upgraded, the lights as well as the drainage systems and other assets in and around the astroturf will be upgraded. This is to ensure that these new assets will have a longer life span. Sheldon Rostron, NWU Sport Director and former South African Women’s and Men’s hockey coach, said, “This project has been put in place to ensure that we stay relevant as a top hockey university as well as attract international teams to impart knowledge and development as we had done in the past for our teams and staff”.
The astroturf upgrade will be completed in mid-March. The NWU Hockey teams play pre-season matches next week against Old Albanians in Pretoria, as well as against the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg. Official matches are starting in April and the Varsity Hockey for the ladies is taking place in the first weekend of May. Rostron said, “We would like to see the women’s team winning the Varsity Hockey event – we have a good team and feel that it is our year. We would like to see the same performance at USSA. The men are on a new path with many senior players finishing up in 2018. They need to get into

the A-Section for USSA and qualify for the Varsity Hockey a second time in 2020.” One of the international events that are taking place at the NWU astroturf this year is the Olympic Qualification Event.
All the African teams will be attending from 12-18 August 2019, and the NWU Hockey group is currently negotiating with the FIH to host more events and matches here.
Inside scoop on NWU Hockey boot NWU serves up new tennis vision Tyler Jacobs @tymjacobs
Prospective players of both the North-West University (NWU) men’s and women’s hockey team experienced the true essence of teamwork at a hockey boot camp on Saturday, 16 February. The boot camp started at the Astro, where their coaches gave them the instructions and rules of the games, as well as what team building games they were expected to play. The players were divided into their teams with each team having to come up with a war cry which they had to perform in front of the entire group and assign a team mascot. The hard work only began as they were told to run to eight different locations on campus to participate in a different team building task at each of these
locations, one of which was doing the ‘macarena’ for their fellow players. After the team building activities, all the teams met back at the Astro where they had a fun twist, as they got the opportunity to break an egg over each other’s and their coaches’ heads. Carli Rheerder, a thirdyear BEd foundation phase student, said, “I loved the spirit and the dress-up opportunity that we had. Oh, and I loved breaking an egg on our coaches’ head!” Later in the evening, a braai was held to cap off a successful hockey boot camp that strengthened the bond between teammates, as well as their bond with their coaches. Geoffrey Botha, a third-year student in human movement sciences and sports coaching said, “The greatest aspect of it all was to see how so many different people can put their differences aside for sport”.

The North-West University (NWU) in partnership with Tennis South Africa (TSA) will build South Africa’s first ever multi-surface tennis facility. The new development will include five traditional clay courts, two new grass courts and the resurfacing of the ten existing hard courts. The project is expected to be completed in an extremely ambitious time frame with June 2019 set as the target date of completion. The lack of clay court facilities in South Africa has hamstrung the national tennis teams, especially in their efforts to compete on the international stage in tournaments such as the Davis Cup. Sheldon Rostron, the head of
sport at the NWU, said it has been a dream to create such a unique facility that would help students prepare for major events, “We know this will be a game changer. It’s a package that will attract both national and international talents.” World number six wheelchair tennis player, Kgothatso Montjane, agreed that the country has been in dire need of these tennis surfaces, “Players like me know how important it is to have these facilities at home.” “We will now be able to make great preparations here at home on the (new) surface rather than having to travel to Europe to prepare,” said Montjane. The major infrastructure investment will be funded by the NWU. Sheldon Rostron would not reveal the capital expenditure required for the project to Wapad at this point in time. As a result of the new facilities, TSA will be hosting its clay-court Junior Masters tournaments in
Potchefstroom. “For decades the lack of clay courts in South Africa has been discussed as a critical weakness in our tennis. Our best players will now be able to train and play regularly on the surface,” said Richard Glover, the TSA Chief executive. In conclusion, Glover expressed his gratitude to the NWU, “We would like to thank the NWU for the confidence they are placing in tennis in South Africa with this significant infrastructure investment. We have built up an extremely positive working relationship with the university and look forward to collaborating to make this new facility a major hub for high-performance tennis in South Africa.”

NWU remains undefeated in Varsity Cup Lizaan Snyman @lizaan09
M
onday, 25 February the unbeaten North-West University (NWU) rugby team took on the surprisingly also unbeaten University of the Free State (Shimlas) in the fourth round of the Varsity Cup at Shimla-Park in Bloemfontein. The NWU rugby team ended their 10 year drought in Bloemfontein against the Shimlas with a 26 - 13 victory. This has also ended the Shimlas’ unbeaten run. Louis (Chucky) van der Westhuizen, the NWU captain said, “Our goal for the game against Shimlas was to come away
with a bonus-point victory and that is what we have done, so we are happy”. The score was not a true reflection of the game as the NWU team had a mere 28% possession throughout the match, but handled the pressure from the Shimlas well and made best use of the important moments in the match. Besides the NWU courageous and outstanding defence, the Shimlas was also their own worst enemy as they made countless handling errors in good positions. It did not help that the Shimlaflank, Janco Cloete, received a yellow card for illegally and deliberately stopping a driving maul, which lead to a penalty try for the NWU in the 28th minute. As well as the Shimlas-lock, Mervyn Roos, was sent off with a red card on the 52-minute mark
due to a dangerous tackle, leaving the Shimlas with 14 men on the field for the remainder of the match. The Shimlas was not the only team who had discipline issues as the NWU centre, Evardi Boshoff, was sent off with a yellow card for illegal play in the 35th minute. First blood went to the NWU as the right winger, Pienaar van Niekerk, dived over for his second try of the season. The Shimlas, however, responded quickly with a try of their own through Tiaan Schutte and after 10 minutes the score was level at 7 - 7. NWU had to be happy with the halftime score of 14 - 7 in their favour as they had to defend most of the half, making an extravagant 72 tackles. Schalk Hugo, NWU fly-half, said, “Our biggest issue in the
game was that we did not keep possession of the ball for long periods, so we had to defend a lot, which tired us out even if we defended well”. AK Nela increased the score for the NWU team in the 56th minute as he crossed the white-wash for a try. Lubabalo Dobela, the Shimlas fly-half, brought the score to 19 10 with a penalty kick. In the last ten minutes the Shimlas fought hard, but the NWU captain, Van der Westhuizen, turned the ball over five meters from his own try line and the NWU was awarded a penalty. Hugo used his experience and took a quick kick down field, where they won another penalty, but this time within 22 meters of the Shimlas try line. Hugo showed again why he was
the deserving winner of the Player that Rocks as he had the vision to kick the ball across the field into the hands of the left winger, Lungelo Gosa, who dived over for NWU’s bonus point try. Hugo, said, “It is very special and an honour for me to receive the award as the Player that Rocks, especially in a team so talented. For our next match, however, we need to work on our defence and pressure from our kick-offs as we gave Shimlas too much space to run the ball from their half, instead of them being forced to kick it. We also need to keep ball possession by playing more direct rugby with the forwards and minimizing errors”.
Caster Semenya contests IAAF regulation Alet Janse van Rensburg @aletterkunde
Last week Caster Semenya, athlete and North-West University (NWU) alumni, spent less time on the track and more time in the Swiss Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) where her legal team is challenging new regulations set by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The new guidelines would require women with naturally high testosterone levels to

undergo treatment that would decrease hormonal levels before such athletes will be allowed to take part in international events.
News24 reported that the IAAF stated they want to implement this regulation to “level the playing field”.
Support for Semenya streamed in from all camps. Jim Irvin, general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers of South
Africa (NUMSA) has stated that the union stands behind Semenya firmly and that she is “naturally superior”. Suné Luus, South African women’s cricket player, and Jesse Kriel, rugby player, were amongst many South Africans who showed their support for Semenya on social media by using #HandsOffCaster and lately also #NaturallySuperior. On 17 February, Rapport reported that the department of sport put aside R25 million to support Semenya in the court case. According to News24, the CAS should rule on the matter by March 26.
