A very warm welcome to the Sky Bet Ebor Festival and the flagship race of our season – the Group 1 Juddmonte International. Today is the richest raceday we have ever hosted – alongside the £1m feature, all six other races are worth at least £100,000. This record investment in prize money has been rewarded with some wonderful horses, we are incredibly grateful that their connections have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to savour and even try to pick out a winner. Today marks the 50th anniversary since the inaugural running of our highest rated race, when Roberto famously defeated Brigadier Gerard and so began a contest that has seen so many champions and stories. As but one example, it is ten years since the highest rated winner of them all, when Frankel won in the sponsor’s colours. For over thirty seasons now, our showpiece has been supported by Juddmonte, and we remain hugely appreciative of their Thbacking.isyear’s renewal looks to be a cracker with a clash of generations, distances and global powerhouses. Including Group 1 winners aplenty Carrying the Classic winning torch after his Irish 2,000 Guineas victory at The Curragh is Native Trail in the blue of Godolphin, pitted against the more experienced, defending champion in Mishriff from the Clarehaven stables of the Gosdens. A yet more eagerly awaited subplot is the challenge between star horses, proven over different distances. For the milers, literally none better than Baaeed, unbeaten in nine outings and currently the world’s highest rated horse, representing the Shadwell operation. Out of the same yard of William Haggas comes Dubai Honour, another older horse who is proven in Group company over this distance. Aidan O’Brien has won this race a record six times, so the cause of High Definition should not be discounted. Representing the best in syndicate ownership, course and distance winner Sir Busker looks sure to give his myriad of supporters and William Knight a great day. Marvellous though our feature race is, the rest of the card is also dripping with quality. The Group Two Sky Bet Great Voltigeur is a fascinating contest between racing’s superpowers as well as being one that shapes the final Classic. In 2019, Logician became the 14th colt to achieve the Knavesmire-Town Moor double Every race this week will tell a story; the opening Sky Bet and Symphony Group Stakes has a maximum field of 22 putting our supersize stalls to the test Its unusual distance of five and a half furlongs sees two horses bidding for the record number of wins at York, aiming for seven, good luck to connections of Copper Knight and Dakota Gold.

The Group Three Tattersalls Acomb is the first of ten Group races over these four days, a race won in 2018 by Phoenix of Spain who progressed to take the Irish 2000 Guineas, also backed by Tattersalls.

In a day full of sporting action, I hope you can find time to visit the York Gin Ebor Fashion Lawn before 2.30pm, set in the picturesque surroundings of the Edwardian Weighing Room.

New this year will be the “World Pool Moment of the Day”, an initiative that sees an expert panel select a highlight on each of the three weekdays The member of racing staff from the yard who looks after the horse awarded “World Pool Moment of the Day” will win £1,000 and a bottle of champagne The winner will also be in with a chance of winning “World Pool Moment of the Year” which will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and an industry panel and announced on QIPCO British Champions Day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask at racecourse reception or next time you arrive just call 01904 620911. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site. Can I bring a wheelchair? Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Can I bring somebody to help? Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today. Are there wheelchair viewing platforms? Yes, in all stand side area and Stands easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most. What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme? Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a disabled capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where. Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters? Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you. Wheelchair height betting? Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help. There was one more thing? Please ask, we value your feedback so we can keep improving in this area. Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

BETTING WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE At reduced odds you can back a horse and collect if it wins or runs second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite.

• 3 or 4 runners all on to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms. This must be at 1/5 odds a place 1,2

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• 8 or more runners 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

WAYS TO BET STRAIGHT Win Only EACH WAY A bookmaker taking each way bets will display the terms on which he/ she accepts such bets on the top of his/her board. This is a bet for your selection to win or be placed In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

STRAIGHT FORECAST Name the first and second in the correct order

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS If your selection wins (or, in the case of a place bet, is placed), hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. NEVER destroy your ticket until after the “Weighed In” announcement has been made. There may still be a stewards enquiry and the first past the post, or placed horses, may be disqualified. On rare occasions even the horse coming fourth has been awarded the race. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker as they have all been approved by the Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, which administers the betting rings at each of Britain’s 59 racecourses. The AGT also offers a full late pay service, in case a bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late Pay Claims should be sent to Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Limited, 3a, Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 4WY.

PLACING YOUR BET WITH A BOOKMAKER Shop around for the best odds against your selection. When you have decided on where to place your bet, state the number of your chosen horse and the stake, for example “number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to his/ her clerk and hand your stake to the bookmaker. You will then be given an itemised receipt that gives details of the bet and shows potential winnings. You should keep this ticket safe.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager. Their office is located near the Theakston Bar to the South of the main Betting Ring.

• Fewer than 3 runners all on to win

AWAY BETTING Many bookmakers will also take bets at the other race meetings today. They offer a comprehensive service, including bets settled TAX FREE at Starting Price (S.P.)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

How to Read the Racecard You

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

Non-runner Ground The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today. must be 18 or over to a bet may be asked to provide proof of your age placing a bet cannot produce this bet will not be accepted horse’s saddlecloth number horse’s name No. of days since last ran age weight st-lbs kg draw colour graphic Barons Selection performances /=new season -=new year C=course winner D=distance winner CD=course & distance winner BF=beaten favourite sex of horse c=colt male horse up to age 5 h=horse g=gelding

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

This afternoon’s Sky Bet and Symphony Group Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with twenty-two closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology. Narrowing down the field of twenty-two declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form. Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Dakota Gold is rated 102 is considered 1lb “better” than Copper Knight who is rated 101. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Dakota Gold should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Dakota Gold carries 1lb more than Copper Knight, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fifteen runners but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all fifteen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance? Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into.

SKY BET AND SYMPHONY GROUP HANDICAP

1) FORM Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today; Makanah, King Of Stars & Atalis Bay.

Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

3) DISTANCE Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Copper Knight, Mondammej and Mountain Peak have all won over today’s slightly unusual distance which could a key consideration.

5) YORK RECORD “Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This year we have plenty of horses that have won at the course and distance, Dakota Gold, Copper Knight (Both a record six times) and Ghathanfar could all put that good form to use.

6) CONCLUSION Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good to firm’ will be the description, the Michael Dods-trained Dakota Gold might well continue his winning form to become York’s winning most horse. The York specialist has had a fine season and could make it two from three on the Knavesmire if he were to win today.

HANDICAP?

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE

A BIG SPRINT

4) GROUND If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. Mountain Peak is one who will enjoy a quicker surface. However Sunday Sovereign wins have come on a surface that is a little softer. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description.

2) THE DRAW Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps Live In The Dream can use this to his advantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The first of six races with a six-figure purse today, it is a competitive heritage handicap for 3yo+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight Mountain Peak carries the top weight today. Listen to the Punters Panel from 1pm to hear the expert’s view.

York’s new race made the headlines and has continued to do so. To the wider world, Wednesday 22nd August 2012 was just another day, but to the record opening day crowd packed into the Knavesmire it was to be anything but with the 127 seconds at its heart, it is remembered clearly a decade later. There was even an extra buzz at Kings Cross station that morning catching one of the early East Coast Expresses. The Guards on the train even mentioned a certain Frankel as we made our final approach to York Station.

Brigadier Gerard was unbeaten at that stage in 15 races and the four-year-old lined up as hot favourite against the first two home in the Derby- the winner Roberto being ridden by the Panamanian Braulio Baeza after the late Lester Piggott who rode him at Epsom, decided to ride the runner up Rheingold that day.

The stands were packed but the script wasn’t read by the entire cast. Roberto set off in front and although Brigadier Gerard gave chase, Joe Mercer accepted the inevitable in the final furlong. The crowd were shocked, but in hindsight the Brigadier’s failure by 3 lengths to give weight to a Derby winner, when the first two both broke the course record may not have been the disaster some portrayed.

MAGICAL MEMORIES: ROBERTO AND FRANKEL

It was in 1972 that an idea that had been some years in the making became reality - a Group 1 race joined the then three-day Ebor Festival with the first running of the International, over a mile and a quarter, designed to attract the best of the classic generation and the best of the older brigade. If the York organisers were looking for a vote of confidence for their new idea, they more than got it, as the inaugural running produced a field of dreams.

Brigadier Gerard Roberto (Image: PA)

It was to be Frankel’s 13th race a perfect dozen won. But this Juddmonte International was different.

A few applauded as Frankel went to post, and a few gasped as the great horse missed the break and was settled in the rear by jockey Tom Queally as Bullet Train cut out the early running.

Frankel faced a surprisingly large number of rivals as a field of nine went to post, the biggest challengers being St Nicholas Abbey, who had finished third in the King George at Ascot after winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom one of three challengers from Ballydoyle, while two other stable mates of Frankel- his regular companion Bullet Train and Twice Over- who had won the race the previous year. And there was Godolphin’s Farhh, whose rider Frankie Dettori observed wistfully “I’m sick of seeing the horse’s a*r*e.

Turning for home, the crowd silence told its own story. The hero remained near last; then Queally made his move down the stands side- the race was over with a furlong to go- Frankel won by 7 lengths. No one moved as Queally brought the Champion in front of the stands.

So, whether fifty years or a mere decade have slipped by, the memories of great champions remain fresh. It was a day, now a decade ago that still lives in the memory. Not just the race, but what happened afterwards.

History repeating itself, in an interview reflecting on great racedays, a leading Newmarket Trainer said of August 2012 ‘The reception Sir Henry got that day is why I am such a proud Yorkshireman’ That trainer? William Haggas- will Baaeed add to that collective memory bank today?

Could he despatch fresh rivals with similar disdain, over 1 mile 2 furlongs and 88 yards as he had over a mile? His owner, the much-missed Prince Khalid Abdulla was in town and, despite the desperate signs of his illness so was trainer, Sir Henry Cecil. Those front row views of the pre parade have never filled so earlyit was an extraordinary sight.

Speaking later, Teddy Grimthorpe joked when asked about Cecil’s health- ‘He’s in good spirits and devouring lobster’.

And so to the Winners Enclosure emotion almost tangible as the trainer removed his black fedora and walked forward to receive his prize as the call for “three cheers for ‘enry” was deafeningly responded to. RACE DESCRIPTION This is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3 (like this one), Group 2 and Group 1. The first of the 12 Pattern races during the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. This race is only open to 2yo horses and is over a trip of seven furlongs. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race. He kept on well to score at Newbury on his only start over a furlong shorter and seems sure to be even better suited by this trip. With plenty of improvement possible, he may have the edge here, though it is difficult to discount Irish raider Indestructible or the interesting Shaquille, who could surprise a few here after his eye-catching debut. Voltigeur was a famous Yorkshire-trained Classic winner who carried the colours of the Earl of Zetland, to victory in both the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger in 1850 The Flying Dutchman had also landed the Derby-St Leger double the previous year The so called “Great Match” between the pair was held at York the following spring, over two miles with £1,000 side stakes (a sum equivalent to £700,000 in today’s shops) and the Knavesmire was packed to bursting to see the Flying Dutchman win the money. Yet, in one of those quirks of history the battling Voltigeur won the hearts on the day and he is now remembered with this race, the 550 seat restaurant at York as well as being the horse featured in our logo FIRST WINNER?

WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE?

A ROYAL HICCUP...

Distance One mile and four furlongs (2,400 metres) Prize money £200,000 TheSkyBet GreatVoltigeurStakes FACT FILE:

Alleged is arguably the best Sky Bet Great Voltigeur winner not to go on to score at Doncaster. Trained by Vincent O’Brien, he went to Doncaster unbeaten in five starts and was sent off a red hot favourite, but he was beaten by Dunfermline owned by HM The Queen and ridden by Willie Carson. That was Alleged’s only defeat and he later took his revenge in the Arc in Paris, a prize he also won the following year

It has long been the premier trial for the final Classic of the year and in five decades or more, the road to St Leger fame has often started here on the Knavesmire. When 2019’s winner Logician went on to glory on Doncaster’s Town Moor he became the 14th Great Voltigeur winner to do just that.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was second in this back in 2018. Some ten weeks and 10,500 miles later and the colt carried the Godolphin colours to triumph in the Lexus Melbourne Cup So becoming the first British-trained winner of the race that stops a nation.

OTHER CLASSIC HEROES?

In 2009 Mastery finished runner-up to Monitor Closely but reversed the placings in the Cazoo St Leger Three year’s later Encke could only finish third here, but he broke the hearts of the racing public when he defeated the Triple Crown-seeking Camelot at Doncaster. It was a similar story in 2018 as the York third, Kew Gardens, turned the tables on Old Persian in the season’s final classic.

The Jack Jarvis-trained Castle Rock won the inaugural race in 1950 when ridden by Bill Rickaby.

Premonition won the new York race in 1953, and became the first to go on to triumph in the Cazoo St Leger He was trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Harry Carr and they did it again five years later with Alcide St Paddy, Hethersett, Ragusa and Indiana all did the double in a five year period during the 1960s, while Athens Wood and Bustino added to the score in the following decade. The mighty Reference Point took the Investec Derby as well as these two races in his fantastic career Rule of Law carried the Godolphin blue to double victory in 2004 and Lucarno was another to do the double in 2007.

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker We’ve been making betting better for years and we’re home of First Race Specials and the Soccer Saturday Price Boost. We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a recently extended their partnership with York Racecourse which includes the sponsorship of thirteen races this week; including the Sky Bet Ebor On an afternoon when racegoers can once again take a selfie with the statue of the “Long Fellow”, it is worth noting that the much missed Lester Piggott won the race on no less than nine occasions, while Frankie Dettori has the best record of the current crop of riders with seven victories to his credit. Frankie doesn’t have a ride in today’s race The 2013 renewal went to Ryan Moore whilst two-time winner James Doyle will have the chance to make it three wins in five years aboard the Charlie Appleby trained Walk Of Stars. It would be a new race on the CV for our other riders. Lester Piggott Brioche was the first Yorkshiretrained winner when saddled for victory by Malton-based Captain Charles Elsey in 1957. But it was 45 years before we saw another Yorkshire horse score when Mark Johnston collected the prize with subsequent St Leger third, Bandari. Today, the White Rose banner is rested with all of our competitors hailing from Newmarket or the Emerald Isle.

HOW DO LOCAL TRAINERS FARE?

Paddy Prendergast saddled five winners in the early years of the race, while the late Sir Henry Cecil was successful on four occasions. These totals have been surpassed by Sir Michael Stoute having won it seven times in his career including with Telescope in 2013. However, the master of Freemason Lodge is not represented in the race this year John Gosden, who has won five of the last fourteen renewals, including 2019’s, is another not to be represented here, so Aidan O’Brien, who has won it three times in the past 18 years, could be the trainer to watch. Idaho did the business in 2016 before unseating in incredibly unlucky fashion in the Cazoo St Leger, while Kew Gardens took an eye-catching third here before winning the Doncaster Classic Aikhal seeks to become the trainer’s fourth winner of the race RIDER?

All trends are ten year based unless stated. 55

DISTANCE It might surprise you to learn that of the last ten winners, only Old Persian, Logician, Pyledriver and Yibir had previously won over 1m4f, therefore, we shouldn’t be put off any runner just because they are trying the trip for the first time. Rule Of Law (2004) and Milan (2001) won this event having only ever won over 7f prior to running here whilst the 2016 winner, Idaho, had only won over a mile.

KEY TRENDS Finished in first four last time

BETTING Six of the last ten winners came from the first three in the betting and it must be pointed out that five of those were the favourite. The record of market leaders has been boosted in recent years with Telescope, Postponed, Idaho, Cracksman and Logician all justifying favouritism and with all of the last ten winners having gone off at 10/1 or shorter, it seems that those towards the head of the market are the ones to focus on.

An interesting renewal of the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur in prospect, but the trends point to AIKHAL as the horse to be with here. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, well-fancied and a winner of the ARM Holding International Stakes on his last start, his claims look rock solid. He's a horse who looks to be improving with time and he can gain a second Group success here. The Godolphin duo must be respected and of the two Secret State looks to be the one to side with. The booking of William Buick usually points to the more favourable of the horses in blue and he's a horse on a steep upward curve that must be respected first time up in Group company. Deauville Legend received a nice form boost when Zechariah won at Newbury and won't be far away.

Single-figure odds Trained by Aidan O'Brien

As Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden aren't represented in the race this year, Aidan O’Brien, with three victories in the race to his name, could be the man to follow, and will be hoping to add to that tally with Aikhal. Charlie Appleby has had two winners in the race so could join Aidan O'Brien should one of his two come out on top.

WEIGHT Every horse is initially allotted 9st (8st 12lb until 2014) before penalties are given for previous wins at Group 1 or Group 2 level this season. Only three winners of the race have carried such penalties to victory since 1995. No horses in this years field come here carrying a penalty.

TRAINERS

CONCLUSION

RECENT FORM A last time out victory is not the be all and end all when looking for that elusive winner as only three of the last ten winners of this race have arrived here on the back of a success last time. However, a solid run on their latest start offers some encouragement with all but three of the last ten winners having finished no worse than fourth on their most recent outing.

Owner: Prince Khalid Abdulla Trainer: Sir Henry Cecil Jockey: Tom Queally Breeder: Juddmonte Farms Ltd Few horses have better race records than Frankel, who retired unbeaten in fourteen starts at the end of the 2012 flat season. Having landed numerous Group 1 victories including the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Lockinge and two renewals of the Sussex Stakes, his greatest hour probably came here on the Knavesmire. The opposition was filled with top level performers such as St Nicholas Abbey and Farhh, but it proved no problem as the four-year-old scooted clear of his rivals to win in devastating fashion by seven lengths.

Described as the ‘Iron Horse’ and the epitome of toughness and determination, Giant’s Causeway won six Group 1 races and almost without exception these victories were gained in nail-biting finishes He won the Juddmonte International Stakes by a hard faught head in a superb race, having been headed by Kalanisi in the final furlong but responding in the gamest fashion to get back up on the line. The winner of the Coral Eclipse Stakes, St James Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Irish Champion Stakes, Giant’s Causeway retired as Champion 3-year-old in Europe in 2000.

Having run well to finish third from an unfavourable draw in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Australia was to prove an emphatic Derby winner the following month. Further Classic success followed three weeks later in the Irish Derby before he secured a third straight Group 1 victory here beating French Derby winner The Grey Gatsby in the process.

Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York.

Oasis FrankelDream 65

The most famous of his offspring is probably classy filly Midday who landed six top-level victories during her career, including two notable successes here on the Knavesmire the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Stakes and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks as well as being narrowly denied in the Juddmonte International by stablemate Twice Over. Another of Oasis Dream’s sons, Muhaarar, continued the York connection The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack winner subsequently added four Group 1s in 2015, en-route to being crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and is now producing his own speedy sons and daughters.

The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree. Coming up to date and Juddmonte Farms, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Established in 1977, Juddmonte Farms was set up by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah, who sadly passed away last year. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. It is easy to appreciate how the offspring of great horses such as Frankel will feel a weight of expectation on their withers. The colt formerly trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed his finest hour at York when landing the Juddmonte International for his connections in 2012 to take his unbeaten record to thirteen. Frankel’s stallion career continues to go from strength to strength, the fastest sire to 40 Group winners in history and the sire of no less than 25 Group 1 winners, including Nassau and Prix de Diane winner, Nashwa, Irish Derby winner Westover, and Coronation Stakes heroine, Inspiral. And that’s just this season Cracksman, Adayar, Logician and Hurricane Lane all carried his banner to Group 1 or Classic success in previous years. Based at Banstead Manor, the success of this operation can be seen with Oasis Dream, a Champion at both two and three. His three Group 1 victories included a devastating turn of foot in the 2003 Coolmore Nunthorpe where he made all, quickening close home to win by two and a half lengths. In the breeding shed he has also enjoyed plenty of success, including this years 2000 Guineas winner Native Trail.

What is evident is the strength in depth that Juddmonte possess The quality for Frankel, Oasis Dream, Kingman and latest roster hit, Expert Eye, coupled with the passion and knowledge passed down from the organisation’s much-missed founder, they look set to be sat at the top table for a few generations yet.

JUDDMONTE FARMS BLOODSTOCK EROESH

Another smash hit in the bloodstock world has been Juddmonte’s exceptional miler, Kingman a winner of seven of his eight starts, including four Group 1 victories, the son of Invincible Spirit has already produced 27 Group winners and a further 19 Stakes winners. They include Persian King, Palace Pier, Calyx, Headman, Nausha and Sangarius amongst many others who are only just starting out their racing careers it’s almost certain that Kingman will be known as one of the truly great sires in years to come.

WHEN DID THE RACE BEGIN?

The Juddmonte International was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York but he had stepped down from his position due to ill health before the inaugural race was staged.

The record time came in 2009 when Sea The Stars completed the 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,092 metres) course in 2 minutes 5.29 seconds.

IS IT AN INTERNATIONAL RACE?

The Juddmonte International FACT

The inaugural running of the Juddmonte International in 1972 produced a contest that has gone down in racing legend. Brigadier Gerard was to suffer his only defeat in 18 career starts when headed by that year’s Derby winner, Roberto.

Distance One mile and two furlongs (2,000 metres) Prize money £1,000,000FILE:

IS AGE IMPORTANT?

RECORD TIME?

Since the Juddmonte International was first run in 1972 it has been won by 17 three-year-olds, 22 four-year-olds, 10 five-year-olds and only 1 six-year-old, so the stats, if not the betting market, are in favour of three and four-year-olds who, not surprisingly, make up the field this afternoon.

THE LUCK OF THE O’BRIENS?

Oh yes it certainly lives up to its international billing. Thirteen of the 49 renewals have been won by horses trained overseas. Ireland leads the way with 9 victories followed by France with 3 and Italy with 1. Maurice Zilber, the trainer of the 1974 & 1975 winner Dahlia, was born and raised in Cairo where he trained horses from 1946 to 1962 before moving to Chantilly where he worked for further 43 years. In a the thrilling renewal of 2005, Japanese trained ace, Zenno Rob Roy, finished a close second to subsequent Dubai World Cup winner, Electrocutionist, a colt trained in Italy

The very first renewal was won by the Vincent O’Brien-trained Roberto and he added a second in 1983 with Caerleon, a year after David O’Brien won the race with Assert. After a barren spell, Aidan O’Brien got them back on track when Giant’s Causeway won in 2000; the first of his six winners Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia and the 2019 winner, Japan. John Oxx’s Sea The Stars (Sire of Baaeed) added to Irish success in the race having won in 2009 The Ballydoyle baton this afternoon is carried by High Definition. Australia

ANY OTHER INTERESTING FACTS?

Established in 1977, Juddmonte was founded by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah and consists of three stud farms in England, two in Ireland, and three in Kentucky, USA. The Prince won back-to-back renewals of this race in 2011 & 2012 with Twice Over & Frankel. This afternoon marks the thirty-third time the race has enjoyed their generous support. The most successful jockeys in the history of the Juddmonte International is the much missed Lester Piggott, both he and Frankie Dettori have both won the race five times. Piggott tasted success with Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Hawaiian Sound (1978), Commanche Run (1985) and Rodrigo de Triano (1992) whilst Dettori’s victories came courtesy of Halling (1996), Singspiel (1997), Sakhee (2001), Sulamani (2004) and Authorized (2007). Frankie isn’t scheduled to ride in this year’s race, so Ryan Moore (High Definition) could get three and William Buick (Native Trail) has a chance to score his second success in the race Were Dubai Honour to take the honours, then the bragging rights in the Fallon family would go to Cieren, as remarkably his father, Kieren, never lifted this particular trophy.

The shortest-priced winner of the Juddmonte International was the legendary Frankel who blitzed his rivals in 2012 when sent off at 1/10 In victory he set a new record for winning eight European Group 1 races in a row. In 2008 an unbelievably wet summer resulted in the Ebor Festival being abandoned. The Juddmonte International was re-routed to Newmarket, the only time the race has been staged away from York. The rescheduled race was won by Duke Of Marmalade

Sir Michael Stoute TRAINERS?

LEADING RIDER?

The most successful horses in the history of the Juddmonte International are Dahlia (1974 & 1975), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994) and Halling (1995 & 1996). So Mishriff would join rarefied company were he to defend his title of last year.

The most successful trainers in the history of the Juddmonte International are Sir Michael Stoute, who has won the race six times courtesy of Shardari (1986), Ezzoud (1993 & 1994), Singspiel (1997), Notnowcato (2006) and Ulysses (2017), and Aidan O’Brien (winners on previous page) who recorded his sixth win with Japan in 2019 The former isn’t represented in the race this afternoon, so could High Definition help Aidan to take the lead in 2022?

RECENT FORM

KEY TRENDS Placed or better in Group 1 last time Proven over 10f Horses aged four or younger CONCLUSION

Only the great Frankel in 2012, 2018's winner Roaring Lion and Rodrigo de Triano in 1992, have successfully managed to step up in trip and win the Juddmonte International. In 2013, Declaration Of War stepped up from winning over a mile at Ascot but had already proved himself more than capable over 10 furlongs earlier in his career, whilst Arabian Queen had finished third in the Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs prior to winning here

PROVEN AT THE TOP LEVEL

Unsurprisingly for a race of this quality, the last ten renewals have been dominated by regular Group 1 performers, with only 2011’s victor Twice Over having not contested a top level race on his most recent outing. If we look a bit closer, we see that seven of the last ten winners had finished no worse than second in a Group 1 last time out.

The victory of Japan in 2019 saw the three-year-olds draw ahead of their four-year-old rivals to a score of 4-3 in the last decade, with the remaining three winners being five (Postponed, 2016 & Ghaiyyath, 2020) and six years of age (Twice Over, 2011). However, victories for Ghaiyyath and Mishriff saw the tables turn once more and they are now four-a-piece.

Following on from the above, it's been a good tactic to oppose any runners without a victory to their name this season, regardless of whether they ran well in defeat. Only Sulamani in 2004 and Roaring Lion in 2018 have won the Juddmonte International in recent seasons having not won a race earlier in the calendar. Last year's winner Mishriff had no domestic victory to his name but had recorded victories in Meydan and Saudi Arabia. Mishriff returns this year but has not managed to record a win, the same goes for High Definition and Dubai Honour.

TRAINERS Sir Michael Stoute is the joint-most successful trainer in the race’s history with six victories but isn't represented this time around. So Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to move ahead with High Definition carrying his banner this afternoon.

DISTANCE

Baaeed looks as though he is the one they all have to beat. The unbeaten son of Sea The Stars is looking to emulate his sire and the only negative against his name is the fact he hasn't won over further than a mile. Being proven over 10f is a key trend and should his stamina falter there will be no shortage of challengers. Aidan O'Brien has a fantastic record in the race and despite High Definition not getting off the mark this season he must be respected from such a prolific stable. Charlie Appleby seems to be able to do no wrong this season, so Native Trail should be right there. Mishriff goes in search of a second win in the race and would enter the history books should he oblige.

BETTING Arabian Queen’s victory at odds of 50/1 in 2015 certainly put a cat amongst the pigeons but on the whole, the Juddmonte International isn’t really a race for shocks. Prior to that you have to go back to Ezzoud’s success at 28/1 way back in 1993 to find the only other big-priced winner. Favourites have a decent record here having won five of the last ten renewals, while all bar one of the last ten have been priced in single figures.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our second competitive heritage handicap, your vital statistics are; 4yo+, going two miles. The high handicap rating band of means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the cricketers at Lords today, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). Thunderous will carry the most weight today. So pit your wits against the handicapper as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Master Milliner is one to carry both.

By this stage of the afternoon some will have resorted to their choice of “ps”; with the pin in 2yo nursery handicaps, even the richest one in the land, having a fair record. Pedigree is the second option, the more professional “p”. Good luck in picking a winner with the knowledge that victory in this race means you can remain unbeaten until at least 1.52pm tomorrow!
