Featuring the
Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes Group 1
Just 10 days after his runaway debut success at Newmarket, CALYX won the Coventry Stakes-Gr.2 from triple Group 1 winner Advertise “… The performance that Calyx put up in the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial was as striking as any seen in a pattern sprint all season and marked him down, even at such an early stage, as champion sprinter material… ” Source: Timeform’s Racehorses of 2019
❝ Calyx always had that rare
brilliance you only see in champions. He’s very, very fast and a gorgeous-looking horse with a lovely mind.

Welcome A very warm welcome to Coolmore Nunthorpe day from wherever you are following the action. In a difficult year for so many people, we hope the star sprinters and their riders, can bring some joy into our lives.
In this new digital world, if you want to keep up with the going and the Yorkshire weather, past, present and forecast; then visit our going page which connects direct to our weather station at the one furlong marker (under the windsock), click here https://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/going-report.html For a wider sense of the atmosphere on course and behind the scenes content please do follow our social media channels #EborAtHome. The team at ITV Racing will bring you five races a day and if you want to follow all the action then Racing TV are covering all the contests. We are incredibly grateful that the connections of such high-quality horses have decided to bring them to the Knavesmire for us to enjoy and even try to pick out a winner. The longstanding support of our best race for the speedsters from the Coolmore team is hugely appreciated. The brilliant performances of Ghaiyyath and Love earlier in the week means that we now know two of the three Group One winners from this Festival, by 3.16pm, we can make it all three. This year’s renewal of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes retains its usual focus, raw speed, an asset that defending champion, Battaash, has aplenty. Though the unseasonable weather may have challenged his chance of breaking his own course record of 55.90 seconds, do keep an eye on the giant clock specially installed at the finish. The HH Sheikh Hamdan-owned and Charlie Hills-trained “bat mobile” has astonished us before, so fingers crossed. Royal Ascot winner and improving three-year-old, Art Power, offers a strong local challenge hailing from Tim Easterby’s yard. The Simon & Ed Crisfordtrained A’Ali has won twice in Group company this year whilst Emaraaty Ana gave Kevin Ryan an Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack victory, so is to be respected. A little earlier in the day and it’ll be the turn of the leading juveniles to contest the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack of 2020, the winners receive a fabulous commission from leading equine artist David “Mouse” Cooper, see here for more details. Rhythm Master bids to give leading northern owner John Dance his first win in the race and his jockey Megan Nicholls would be the first female rider to win this historic race. On a day that hosts three pattern races, the Group Two Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup is also part of the British Champions Series, backed by QIPCO. Emerging from the long shadow cast by the mighty Stradivarius, this could herald a new staying champion. From the same stable comes Enbihaar, already at big-race winner at Goodwood. Mark Johnston is sending stalwart Nayef Road, an obvious beneficiary from the absence of the two-time champion, having finished just a place behind him at both Ascot and on the Sussex Downs. Eagles By Day will seek to cap a fine summer for leading owner and Leeds fan, Steve Parkin. As if that wasn’t enough, we have the richest maiden race in the land, one of many York contests to receive the generous backing of the European Breeders’ Fund, despite the challenging environment, so notepads and iPads the ready come 3.45pm, a star may well be revealed. The top class racing we are staging this week, with £2.3m in prize money, is only possible due to the steadfast backing of our sponsors, partners, loyal supporters and the many who contribute to making York a very special place. We are hugely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support in these difficult times and look forward to the day when we can welcome everyone back to the Knavesmire. Thank you. I just hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing from the comfort of your armchair and can share the thrills of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival. Stay safe,

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

P U Z Z L E CORNER GUESS WHO?
Can you remember the name of this much missed ‘sprint king’ who took success twice in the Coolmore Nunthorpe?
WHO AM I?
Can you identify the horse, owner, trainer or jockey who has enjoyed past success in today’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes from the clues provided? 1. I was born in 1977 by the sire of star miler Kris, out of an unraced mare. My half-brother was a fair miler so, when I was a year old, I was sold for 10,000 guineas and moved to Beckhampton where the boss was Mr Jeremy Tree. He decided to give me my first race at Newbury when I was two, but I injured my hip before halfway and finished a long way behind the leader. 2. Mr Tree and my owner Miss Monica Sheriffe decided that I should be sold and I was all set to go to the Newmarket Autumn Sales as Lot 320 when, at the last minute, they had a change of heart and kept me. I rewarded that decision in 1980 with two important wins. Although Moorestyle always beat me when we met, I won the Temple Stakes under Brian Rouse and, more importantly, the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York ridden by Pat Eddery. I also finished second in the Prix de L’Abbaye at Longchamp. 3. In 1981, I had an even better season and became the first horse since Right Boy to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes two years in a row. I also started favourite for the Prix de l’Abbaye, but was second again, beaten by Marwell in a photo. However, 1983 was my best ever season. I was champion sprinter and though Pat Eddery injured his hand and couldn’t ride me at York, Steve Cauthen deputised as I emulated Tag End by winning the Nunthorpe for a third time. I ended the season with a well-deserved win in the Prix de l’Abbaye.
YORK’S RACING CHALLENGE 1. Photo finishes have become common place in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (Battaash’s romp last year excepted!), but can you name the first and second finishers from both 2017 and 2018, when the winning distance was just a nose on both occasions. Bonus points for naming the jockeys.
2. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack boasts an illustrious roll of honour. Subsequent Group 1 winners litter the record books, but can you name the recently retired superstar who took the race in 2016 ahead of multiple successes at Royal Ascot? Do you remember the famous double he completed in July 2019? 3. Battaash’s brilliant victory in last year’s Coolmore Nunthorpe broke a track record that stood for almost 30-years, do you remember which crack sprinter held the old mark, who trained him and who was in the saddle back in 1990? Clue - he carried identical silks. If you know both old and new record times, that would be impressive... 4. The Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup has become a staple for the top stayers in Europe over the past few years, with Stradivarius becoming just the third horse to win the race in consecutive years - can you name the other two and the years in which they were successful? For extra credit, which three horses have won the race twice, but NOT in consecutive years? 5. Can you name some of this afternoon’s runners from the clues below? A – Darth Vader would be one of these. B – Motto of the Herefordshire-based regiment. C – We’ll be seeing a few more of these weather-wise as we head towards Winter! D – Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln & Roosevelt, immortalised in stone. E – Ronald, recently appointed manager of a Spanish football club he also played for.

See page 74 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A competitive handicap for 3-y-o+ horses, run over a mile and a half. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated, Byron Flyer here today, so will carry more weight. Listen to the experts on ITV Racing to form a view.

KNAVESMIRE TIP ZABEEL CHAMPION won twice at Newmarket prior to finishing a close second over 1m2f at Goodwood late last month. The way he kept on that day suggests that this step up in trip may suit the colt and a 3lb rise in the ratings should not stop him from going very well. Alfaatik was not disgraced in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown last April but failed to fire in a Listed race when last seen a month later. On the pick of his form an opening mark of 94 is fair and he merits respect. Others to note are Koeman, Restorer and King’s Caper.

THE RAY GILPIN AWARD
RAY GILPIN (1942-2015)
FOR THE TOP JOCKEY OF THE WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE EBOR FESTIVAL
This award remembers Ray Gilpin, a popular figure in both the Weighing Room & Press Room who sadly passed away in 2015. A proud welshman, you’ll notice the armband worn by the rider in front, is in scarlet. The colour of the scarf that Ray always wore to the races. Andrea Atzeni and Joe Fanning lead the way with two victories each after day two, but with 14 races still to run, the title is still up for grabs.
CARING FOR THE HORSES AT YORK RACECOURSE
Looking after the horses is a priority at York and every raceday there is a team of experienced equine vets on constant call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over and reassure connections. As part of the Northern End Development the vets have their own office, a large treatment box and a dedicated “stock box” to help them assess and treat the stars of our show. If there is an incident during a race, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances, you will see them parked by the track, ready for a rapid response. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. Keeping cool is important to a racehorse so you might see them using the horse showers in the new wash down area or the cold water provided in the parade ring and at every start. If you spot a mist cloud behind the saddling boxes that means the horses are benefiting from the cooling power of the special water-misting fans. If a horse loses a shoe or ‘spreads a plate’, then there is a farrier at every start, as well as in their dedicated box by the pre parade ring, to put it right and let the racing commence. Remember a farrier shoes horses, a blacksmith makes gates or the impressive fretwork on the front of the future Weighing Room. As you enjoy your meeting, you can rest assured the horses are being well cared for by the racecourse team and their own dedicated stable staff. 22
YESTERDAYS RACING CTION
THE SKY BET LOWTHER (GROUP 2)
THE DARLEY YORKSHIRE OAKS (GROUP 1)
Day two of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival began with a bang as Miss Amulet held off the well-fancied Sacred to give Ken Condon a first York win since Success Days took the Sky Bet York Stakes back in 2017.
Already Queen of the QIPCO 1000 Guineas and the Oaks at Epsom, Love added to her Group 1 haul and was crowned the 2020 Darley Yorkshire Oaks champion as she blew away her rivals in dominant fashion.
Breaking well and charting a path down the middle of the track, Miss Amulet tracked the pace set by Wings Of A Dove on the far side, with hot favourite, Sacred, held up in midfield, waiting to make a challenge late on.
Sent off the 4/9 favourite, the dual Classic-winning filly broke smartly and settled nicely in behind early leader Manuela De Vega, who set a solid pace in the early stages of the race, with Alpinista and Franconia, both daughters of the great Frankel settled in the rear of the contest.
As the pace lifted two furlongs from home, Miss Amulet and Sacred were the two going noticeably well and the last to come off the bridle, quickening smartly to slip the field a furlong from home as the leaders on the far side rail began to feel the effects of the early pace. The pair quickly went head to head, but it was the Irish-trained filly who battled on best under jockey James Doyle, shaking off the strong challenge of the William Haggastrained runner-up to win by a length at the line, with Richard Fahey’s Umm Kulthum running on well into third. “I know my agent was pretty pleased when we picked up the ride”, said Doyle. “Today it has really helped having experience on her side, especially late on.” After the race, Miss Amulet was given quotes of 25/1 for next year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas.
RESULT
1st Miss Amulet 2nd Sacred 3rd Umm Kulthum
15/2 2/1F 15/2
There was little change until the field turned for home, but it was quickly evident that Love was galloping along with loads still under the bonnet and after she took it up from the weakening Manuela De Vega two furlongs from home, the race was all but over. The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly proceeded to put five lengths between her and the field under no more than hands and heels riding by Ryan Moore. Fellow Irish-trained filly One Voice looked a threat at one stage, but taking on the winner took its toll as she was passed late on by Alpinista for second, but it was all about the brilliant Love. “She’s very special”, said Moore. “She’s been exceptional this year and has absolutely thrived. She’s just got stronger and stronger and has done it very easily today.” It will be the Arc next for Love and Sky Bet installed her as the new 9/4 favourite.

LORDS, MUSICIANS, NATIVES AND ALMOST A LADY THE COOLMORE NUNTHORPE Plenty of people have good reason to wish 2020 would hurry up and end, but the passing of time will offer further cause for celebrations, as the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival in 2022, will see two of the Trinity of Group 1 races reach landmark renewals. It’ll be the 50th Juddmonte International, and the 100th running of the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, one of Europe’s biggest sprints, so a race which is all about one word- speed. York’s flying five furlongs has seen so many great races, and the fact it is open to juveniles, who, armed with a significant weight allowance, square up to their seniors adds an extra dimension. Many remember how the last two-year-old to win the race, Kingsgate Native, ridden by Jimmy Quinn stormed home to beat Desert Lord and Dandy Man in 2007 - it was some way for the speedball to lose his maiden tag!
Kingsgate Native
The Nunthorpe began life as a selling race before its present format - and has always had the ability to throw up a shock - backing the Nunthorpe winner would often be enough on its own to pay for your day out. Recent years also bring back memories of desperate finishes. While Battaash got it right, and in record-breaking style a year ago seeing off Soldiers Call and So Perfect, he had been a spectator in fourth the previous two years when the winning margin was the minimum - a Nose. Back in 2018 it needed all the skill and patience of Judge Di Clark to weigh the evidence that locally trained Alpha Delphini had pixled out Mabs Cross; a year after Frankie Dettori had celebrated victory on the US raider Lady Aurelia, only to find the Judge and the photo saying otherwise - it was to be Marsha’s afternoon after all. 26
Mecca’s Angel
It’s a race full of memories- the emotion after County Durham based Mecca’s Angel for David Metcalfe, Michael Dods and Paul Mulrennan won back to back renewals in 2015 and 16 still brings a smile, while it’s almost 20 years since Aidan O’Brien last won it - and he needed those two musical immortals Mozart and Stravinsky to strike the right notes. In the modern era only one horse, Sharpo has won the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times, yet still more rare is that a female rider has claimed the crown on two occasions. Trailblazing, as often was her lot, Alex Greaves was part of a thrilling dead heat back in 1997 aboard Ya Malak. Roll forward and the 2011 race, like many others, was won by an outsider - 20-1 shot Margot Did, with Hayley Turner, now of ITV racing fame, up top.
Alex Greaves
Hayley Turner
So, sit back and enjoy another renewal that is likely to throw up more stories, but stay alert, you’ve only got a minute to concentrate. Adapted from an article by Mike Vince, first published on sportinglife.com.

AGE Although three-year-olds are eligible for the Lonsdale Cup, the Classic generation easily have the worst record in the race. The last runner they had in the race was Il Paradiso last year and they're not represented this time around. When it comes to positives, the most successful age group are the five-year-olds who have taken four of the last ten renewals, a plus for Enbihaar, who is the only five-year-old in this year's contest. TRAINER John Gosden has won this twice thanks to Stradivarius in the past two years but with the brilliant Chestnut on a path to the Arc this year, Enbihaar represents the master of Clarehaven. BETTING Montaly triumphed in 2017 at odds of 16/1 and whilst Millenary (12/1) and Times Up (11/1) have also provided small shocks, they have proved the exception rather than the rule as those towards the head of the market have enjoyed the most success. There have been three winning favourites in the last ten renewals and the average winning SP during the same time is around 5/1.

RECENT FORM Stayers tend to mature as the season goes on and therefore it isn’t completely surprising to note that only three recent winners of this race had been successful on their previous start. However, only two of the last ten winners of this race had not achieved a top four finish last time which suggests that it is the form horses coming into the race that are the group to focus on. CLASS Opinion Poll, Pale Mimosa, Max Dynamite and most recently Montaly all went on to win the Lonsdale Cup having not contested a Group race on their most recent start, but on the whole these are exceptional in that respect. Every other winner contested either a Group 1 or 2 contest on their previous outing, including last year's winner, Stradivarius, who took the Group 1 Goodwood Cup, as he did this year, illustrating the high quality nature of this race. KEY TRENDS Finished in the first four last time Contested a Group 1 or 2 on their latest outing Focus on those towards the head of the betting
CONCLUSION With no Stradivarius in opposition, this looks a golden opportunity for the admirable NAYEF ROAD to score for Mark Johnston's Yorkshire yard. His two seconds to the great chestnut in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and in the Goodwood Cup are the best bits of form available and he's set to go well. It won't be easy though, with the progressive Enbihaar in receipt of the 3lb mares' allowance on her first run at two miles. She was a facile winner of the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes over 1m 6f at Glorious Goodwood and this trip could unlock further improvement for this classy mare. Don't count out the four-year-old Dashing Willoughby either - the Andrew Balding-trained stayer is unbeaten this season, including a Group 3 Henry II Stakes triumph at Sandown Park, and can make his presence felt. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 29
The Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup
FACT FILE: RACE HISTORY?
Distance Two miles (3,200m)
Prize money £100,000
The race started life as a Listed contest and was called the Lonsdale Stakes, run over 1m7f198y. It was promoted to Group 3 level in 1998, before being renamed the Lonsdale Cup and given Group 2 status in 2004. The distance was extended by 110 yards in 2007.
LUCK OF THE IRISH Since 1980, apart from Willie Mullins who won the race with Max Dynamite in 2015, only Aidan O’Brien (2007) and Dermot Weld (2014) had won this race. O’Brien and Weld don’t send over a representative this afternoon, so it’s down to Mullins, with Stratum and heading his charge for a double.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL? The very best stayers in Europe have their season geared around “the Cup Races” of which the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup features strongly. With Classic and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winners amongst its roll of honour, it is a race that is right up there with the best of them.
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST SUCCESSFUL? Opinion Poll
That honour befalls six horses who have each won the race twice - Further Flight (1992 & 1993), Double Eclipse (1995 & 1997), Celeric (1996 &1999), Persian Punch (1998 & 2001), Opinion Poll (2010 & 2011) & Stradivarius (2018 & 2019).
SALUTING THE CROWD?
Whilst he may not have been the highest rated, Sergeant Cecil was certainly a favourite with the Knavesmire crowds where he won four times from seven starts. He landed this prize in 2006 before following up in the following month’s Doncaster Cup, which was run here due to redevelopments on Town Moor. His other victories here included the Sky Bet Ebor in 2005 and the 2007 Matchbook Yorkshire Cup. 30
Sergeant Cecil
LEADING TRAINERS?
John Dunlop holds the record with five victories. Mark Johnston and David Elsworth have both won the race three times but only the former is represented here by Nayef Road. Last year’s winning trainer, John Gosden, saddles Enbihaar in the quest to join that treble club with Stradivarius on the path to the Arc this year.

LEADING RIDER? Frankie Dettori surpassed Pat Eddery’s mark of five last year thanks to Stradivarius. However, the pair’s absence this year leaves Jamie Spencer, Ryan Moore, William Buick, Silvestre de Sousa and P J McDonald the only members of the current crop with a win in this already to their names.
WHAT AGE GROUP HAS THE BEST RECORD? Since 1980 four-year-olds lead the way having won the race 13 times. Three and five-year-olds are next best, tied with 7 victories. However, two of the last three winners of the race, Quest For More and Montaly, were both six years old. Stratum, and Withhold would be breaking the mould were they to win at seven today, while eight-year-old Who Dares Wins would be pushing the envelope even further.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? If you read your racecard carefully (yes, even this digital one) you may have noticed that Weatherbys are the team behind this racecard and those at thousands of other race meetings. As well as this specialist printing and editorial service to racing they are its civil service, keeping the administration of the sport on track. The equine insurance arm of the business supports this particular race.

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
The record-breaking Mark Johnston has been a leading light for the White Rose county having won the race three times. Double Eclipse won the race twice in 1995 & 1997 with his dual Gold Cup at Royal Ascot winner Royal Rebel adding the third in 2000. He saddles Goodwood Cup and Gold Cup at Royal Ascot second Nayef Road here. Tim Easterby has also been successful in recent times when his St Leger winner Bollin Eric landed the honours in 2003, but he’s not represented here, so instead it falls to David O Meara’s Eagles By Day to provide a second string to Yorkshire’s 2020 bow.

RACE DESCRIPTION The Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (like this one) and Group 1. This race is open to 3-y-o+ horses, run over two miles which is the longest distance of the week. Weight allowances are granted based on age, gender and previous success. The mare, Enbihaar, gets 3lb in weight due to physical development compared to her male counterparts. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.
LAST YEAR’S RACE Winner: Stradivarius (IRE) Trainer: John Gosden Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age/Weight: 5-9-6 Runners: 4 ran Price: 4/9F Superstar stayer Stradivarius broke the track record in the process of winning this race for the second straight season. KNAVESMIRE TIP Enbihaar impressed when scoring at Goodwood earlier this month in Group 2 company and should stay this new 2m trip, but this ground might be slightly softer than she would like, and that tips things in the favour of DASHING WILLOUGHBY. An underrated stayer, he has shown a nice attitude in victory at Newmarket and Sandown the last twice and could take all the beating. Nayef Road was second behind Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup and also deserves plenty of respect.

BLOODSTOCK
H
COOLMORE
EROES
Most people are familiar with the terms “thoroughbred” and “pedigree”. But did you know that the former means the horse is descended from one of just three stallions? Known as the foundation stallions, two of them performed their duties within twenty miles of York. The Darley Arabian stood at Aldby Hall near Stamford Bridge, whilst the Byerley Turk was at Goldsborough Hall, just outside Knaresborough. The trio was completed by the Godolphin Arabian, a resident just over the county line at Longsford Hall in Derbyshire. Over the intervening three hundred years some of the blood lines have become more successful than others and this genealogy gives every horse its pedigree, or family tree. Coming up to date and Coolmore, sponsors of today’s feature race continue the bloodstock tradition of great stallions. Originally, a relatively small farm, owner Tim Vigors, a famous fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, began transforming it in 1968 and after going into partnership with Vincent O’Brien and Robert Sangster the three men built it up into the well-known stud farm it is today. Vigors sold his interest to O’Brien and his son-in-law John Magnier and it was Magnier who built the stud into a multi-national, multi-billion-Euro operation. On most occasions, the superstar stallions of their generation had proved themselves on the racecourse. Coolmore’s headline stallion Galileo destroyed his rivals in both the Epsom Derby and the Irish equivalent before completing an impressive hat-trick in the King George at Ascot. Since his retirement, he has been Champion Sire in eight different years having sired a staggering 80 individual Group 1 winners. If you were to glance at his most successful progeny, you would see that he has sired many of the best racehorses in recent years.
Galileo 36
Picturesque surroundings These include Frankel, New Approach, Australia and Gleneagles - all now stallions in their own right but this is by no means a coincidence. As you can see, Galileo has already started to make his name as a sire of sires, with 15 of his sons having sired Group 1 winners in their own right, and that trait has no doubt been passed on from his sire Sadler’s Wells. He too stood at Coolmore and comes from the Northern Dancer line, regarded as one of the most productive bloodlines in the history of thoroughbred racing. As well as Galileo, Coolmore also stand numerous big race winners in Mastercraftsman, Camelot, Caravaggio, Churchill and Highland Reel. This festival produces champions and future stallions. Declaration of War won the Juddmonte International in 2013 and with Australia obliging in 2014, this pair are just two of the big names on the roster. The strength that they possess in the stallion department, as well as determination and knowledge of its founders, shows no signs of ceasing. Coolmore continue to produce Classic winners year on year and as a result continue to set a benchmark.

TOP TRAINER AT YORK AWARD The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes!

PORTRAIT OF A WINNER AL BASTI EQUIWORLD DUBAI GIMCRACK The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes is a famous race with a lot of tradition. All traditions have to start somewhere so the sponsor was keen to offer a unique prize, as befits such a contest. A commission of their winner. So they have teamed up with the now Norfolk based artist, David “ Mouse” Cooper. ‘Mouse’ was born a naturally talented artist. Brought up in the East End of London, he left school with Grade A in art, but not much else. He went into racing as an apprentice jockey, had a few rides, and then became a work rider, and eventually yard manager. More and more he was driven to paint, and in 2005 he took the plunge and sold his house to pay his way through Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, gaining a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art.
Mouse dabbles with a self portrait.
He has since worked as an artist and art tutor. He is widely collected, and has gained a reputation for successfully capturing the movement of horse and jockey, as well as the drama of racing. He now lives and works in a small studio in Fakenham, Norfolk If mouse knew which horse to paint in advance, then he could make art his hobby rather than career, sadly he will have to wait until around 2.47pm today before he knows his subject. The lucky connections will get a double prize, able to collect the painting of the Racecourse shown below this afternoon, they will then be presented with their commission on completion.
The “on the day” prize shows the Knavesmire as we all treasure it.

TRAINER Of those with runners this year, Kevin Ryan has the best record having won the race four times, courtesy of Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), Astaire (2013) and most recently Emaraaty Ana last year. He is represented by Seven Brothers this time around. Aidan O’Brien is the only other trainer with more than one success to his name but he doesn't have a representative looking to join Mull Of Kintyre and Rock Of Gibraltar on the roll of honour this year. Richard Fahey will be looking to follow up 2017 victory with Summer Sands as he saddles Escape Route. RECENT FORM A last time out victory is not essential with only four of the last ten winners having had such form to their name. However, it is worth noting only one horse in the last decade had finished outside of the first three on their most recent start. Interestingly, only half of the winners in the last decade contested a Group race on their most recent outing, so don’t be shy to look beyond those already proven at this level.

DISTANCE Only five of the last ten winners of this race had previously won over this 6f trip suggesting that such form isn’t as crucial as you would expect. However, two of the four who hadn’t won over the trip were trained by William Haggas so he clearly has the right idea of what is required to win this race Yazaman hasn't won over six furlongs yet, but has been second in two Group 2 contests. BETTING In the last decade there have been only two winning favourites of the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack but eight of those winners were sent off at singlefigure odds. An average starting price of around 6/1 also suggests that it is important not to stray too far from the market leaders. KEY TRENDS Trained by Kevin Ryan Finished in first three last time Avoid outsiders in the market
CONCLUSION Yazaman is clear of these on bare form and clearly goes into the race with an excellent chance after a maiden win, a second to Tactical in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and two further runner-up berths in Group 2 company, again to Tactical in the Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket and then to Supremacy in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. However, despite setting a strong standard, William Haggas' charge might find one or two improve past him here, including the Richard Hannontrained MOHAWK KING, who made an impressive winning debut at Ascot and whose pedigree suggests any softening of the ground won't be against him. Minzaal was fourth behind that rival at Ascot, but bolted up at Salisbury last time out and could narrow the gap between the two. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 39
The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes
FACT FILE: WHO WAS GIMCRACK? A BRIEF HISTORY? The Gimcrack Stakes was established in 1846. Originally open to horses of either gender, the first renewal was won by Ellerdale, ridden by Tommy Lye and trained by Tom Dawson. It wasn’t until 1987 when the race was restricted to colts and geldings.
Distance Six furlongs (1,400m)
Prize money £100,000
Gimcrack, a grandson of the foundation stallion, the Godolphin Arabian, was a 18th century racehorse who, despite his small stature at just 14.2 hands, won 27 of his 36 races in a career spanning seven seasons.
HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CLASSIC WINNERS?? The race tends to produce top-class sprinters but the 2001 winner Rock Of Gibraltar broke the mould. As a three-year-old he won the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Irish 2,000 Guineas during a run of seven consecutive Group 1 victories. Only Frankel can better that! Further back in time, the legendary Mill Reef won this race in 1970 before winning the Investec Derby the following year.
Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a trainer, a jockey and a stable lad.
GEORGE STUBBS?
Stubbs, a leading artist in the 18th Century, is perhaps best known for his equine master pieces. The record price for a Stubbs painting was set by the sale at auction of Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a Trainer, a Stable-Lad, and a Jockey at Christie’s in London in July 2011 for £22.4 million.
ANOTHER MULTIPLE GROUP 1 WINNER The 2014 winner Muhaarar went from strength-to-strength as a three-year-old. The Charlie Hills-trained sprinter won four consecutive Group 1s - the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, the Darley July Cup at Newmarket, the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot. In the process, he wrote his name into the record book by becoming the first British-trained horse for 25 years to complete a hat-trick of Group 1 sprints. The last horse to achieve such a feat was the 1991 Nunthorpe winner Dayjur, who, like Muhaarar, was owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum. 40

LEADING TRAINERS?
Kevin Ryan
William I’Anson, Jr. leads the way having won the race seven times but that statistic won’t help you today - he trained at the end of the 1800s. Of the current crop, Kevin Ryan has won the race four times, so there must be high hopes for Seven Brothers this afternoon. The second of Aidan O’Brien’s brace of wins in the race came way back in 2001 with Rock Of Gibraltar but he’s nor represented in the race today. Escape Route may give Richard Fahey another win after Sands of Mali opened his account in 2017.
LEADING RIDER? Like the leading trainer, John Osborne Junior (nine wins) isn’t around anymore to offer any clues to this year’s result. Of those with rides today, Oisin Murphy (Ubettabelieveit) is the only other to have tasted past success with Threat just last year Jamie Spencer
FASTEST TIME? In 2009, John Gosden’s Showcasing covered the six furlongs course in a time of 1m 9.28s - a then course record! This record remaining in place until Tiggy Wiggy broke it in the 2014 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS? Formerly known as Al Basti Hartog and established in the year 1998, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai has, within a short span of time, become the pioneers in equine industry to Middle East and expanded across the globe. They have always recommended and introduced the best quality natural products which have had a very good response from the industry and are the distributors for leading companies such as Baileys Horse Feeds and Foran Equine Products.
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Not badly at all. Mick Easterby won in 1986 with Wiganthorpe and Lynda Ramsden added another with Chilly Billy in 1994. Since then, Kevin Ryan has led the White Rose county with four victories - Amadeus Wolf (2005), Blaine (2012), the much-missed Astaire (2013) and Emaraaty Ana last year. He has Seven Brothers in the race this year in his bid for a five timer. Other Yorkshire contenders include Richard Fahey, who has Escape Route carrying the Malton flag today. The prize could go to Langton if Nigel Tinkler triumphs with Ubettabelieveit.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti Wherever in the world you are reading this message, your world has changed from what it was 12 months ago. We send our most sincere condolences to the many people across the globe have lost loved ones in the most painful of circumstances. Their world will never be the same. And our thanks to those who have bravely in many ways, tried to make our collective lives better in these challenging times. Our passion for horse racing has not changed. Our love of the thoroughbred has not changed. But how we all enjoy this magnificent sport has changed. And we have had to adapt. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York race-course team by putting our name to the 2020 Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Gimcrack Stakes in late August and the Listed 6F Garrowby Stakes in September. We would like to thank the countless people behind the scenes who have made racing possible once more. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout the season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Richard Hannon took this 12 months ago and his 250,000 guineas buy Mohawk King did little wrong when scoring on debut at Ascot. Minzaal caught the eye when fourth in that contest and has since impressed at Salisbury. Lauded and Escape Route finished just behind the selection when third at Goodwood and Newmarket respectively and are noted, while the course-and-distance winning Seven Brothers puts his unbeaten record on the line for a yard that won this in 2018.

KNAVESMIRE LEG
ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
NDS
The subsequent victories of the 2014 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes winner, Muhaarar, brings back memories of the 2001 winner Rock Of Gibraltar. The Rock, as he became affectionately known, made a winning debut in a Curragh maiden before finishing a respectable sixth behind stablemate Landseer in the Coventry Stakes. He followed that with a first Pattern race victory in the Railway Stakes back at the Curragh where he beat another stablemate Hawk Wing, who he was to tussle with again later in his career. Despite the impressive start to his career Rock Of Gibraltar was sent off only second-favourite for the Gimcrack behind John Gosden’s Waldenburg. Although he was the last of the nine runners to enter the paddock, he looked an absolute picture as his coat glistened in the warm summer sun. Ridden by Aidan O’Brien’s stable jockey at the time, Mick Kinane, Rock Of Gibraltar travelled strongly through the opening stages before striking the front two furlongs out. As the runners approached the furlong pole, Rock Of Gibraltar found another gear and ran right away from Ho Choi and Twilight Blues who filled the places. It was a truly emphatic victory. Post-race comments from the Racing Post summed his performance up to a tee: “He came right away inside the last and will be even better suited by seven. He is up there with the best of his generation.” However, they had to spoil it by adding: “That said, it would be unwise to be taking the 20-1 for the Guineas at present, especially as a line through Twilight Blues leaves him a fair way behind his stablemate Johannesburg at this stage.” Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Following his Knavesmire romp, he was beaten in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster but signed off his juvenile season with Group 1 victories in the Grand Criterium on the Arc card and two weeks later in the Dewhurst at Newmarket. By top Coolmore stallion Danehill, Rock Of Gibraltar was bred by Aidan O’Brien in partnership with his wife Anne-Marie and father-in-law Joe Crowley.
His name was inspired by that of his dam; Offshore Boom; due to Gibraltar’s low-tax status. Rock Of Gibraltar made his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas where he was sent off a generous 9-1 with stablemate, Hawk Wing, the 6-4 favourite. In a thrilling race, the Ballydoyle duo crossed the line together, albeit separated by the width of the track. When the result was announced, the Rock had beaten his stablemate by a head. That was the final time that he was to start odds-against. After sauntering to an easy victory in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, he was just as convincing when taking Royal Meeting honours in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Such was his authority that he frightened off much of the opposition when he was eased to victory in the Sussex Stakes and his seventh successive Group 1 victory was secured in the Prix du Moulin in September. His swansong before retirement was to come in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Arlington. Well fancied to end his career on a winning note, the race simply didn’t go to plan. Slowly away, the Rock was well off the early pace and entering the home straight he still had the whole field to pass. In his defence he almost pulled it off but crossed the line three quarters of a length behind winner Domedriver. Despite this he was voted the 2002 European Horse of the Year. The Rock now stands at Coolmore Stud in Co. Tipperary. His best sons include Hong Kong Cup winner and Investec Derby runner-up Eagle Mountain, as well as Group 1 winners Seventh Rock, Mount Nelson, Varenar and Society Rock who won the Duke Of York Clipper Logistics stakes here on the Knavesmire in 2013. The winner of 10 of his 13 races, the Rock is another impressive Knavesmire Legend.

The Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes
FACT FILE: A BRIEF HISTORY?
Distance Five furlongs (1,000m)
Prize money £250,000
The race is named after Nunthorpe, an area of York located to the north of the racecourse. The first version, a low-grade selling race, was established in 1903 before the present version began in 1922 when it was won by Two Step.
THE AMERICAN CONNECTION? The race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2011 which means the winner of this year’s race earns an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday 7th November. Star US-trained filly, Acapulco ran an eye catching second in 2015 and Lady Aurelia filled the same spot in 2017, just pipped at the post by Marsha in a thriller. A late look at the weather forecast and travel complications means Golden Pal has opted to stay staeside.
TWO-YEAR-OLDS?
Kingsgate Native
The race is one of a limited number of races in which two-year-old horses can compete against their elders. The first juvenile to win was High Treason in 1953, and the most recent was Kingsgate Native in 2007 - a record he’ll keep for now as no two-year-olds are entered today.
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
It is one of only three Group 1 five furlong sprints in Europe - the others being the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on Arc day.
FOREIGN RAIDERS? Ireland’s Dermot Weld won the race in 1984 with Committed. Since then Aidan O’Brien has added a musical double with Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001). He won’t be improving that record today though, as he’s not represented in the race. France’s Robert Collet won the race in 1986 with Last Tycoon as did John Hammond with Nuclear Debate in 2000 despite his non-French passport. Australia chipped in when Ortensia won for Paul Messara in 2012, giving the race a full international flavour, but the current world situation has contributed to no internationally-trained runners taking their place this afternoon. 50
Ortensia
Michael Dods
LEADING TRAINER?
Ossie Bell currently holds the record with 5 victories Highborn II (1926, 1927), Greenore (1932), Concerto (1933) & Ipsden (1937). In the modern era Aidan O’Brien, Michael Dods and Sir Mark Prescott have each won the race twice. O’Brien and Prescott aren’t represented this afternoon, so perhaps Que Amoro can make it three from the last six renewals for Dods and send him clear of the others.
LEADING RIDER?
Lester Piggott holds the record with 7 victories – Right Boy (1958, 1959), Matatina (1963), Caterina (1966), Tower Walk (1969), Swing Easy (1971) & Solinus (1978). Of the current crop, Frankie Dettori is the only multiple winner having won the race three times - Lochsong (1993), So Factual (1995) & Lochangel (1998), but his absence following self isolation protocols after a trip to Deauville last weekend leaves the door open for the once-victorious Jim Crowley to narrow the gap if Battaash can do the double.
HAT-TRICK HEAVEN
Only two horses have managed to win the Coolmore Nunthorpe three times Tag End in 1928, 1929 & 1930 and Sharpo in 1980, 1981 & 1982.
WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?
Jim Crowley
HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?
Not too bad at all. In 1997, the White Rose county won the race twice! The David Barron-trained Costal Bluff and the much missed David “Dandy” Nicholls-trained Ya Malak dead-heated for first place. Nicholls then won it outright with Bahamian Pirate in 2004 before our old favourite Borderlescott won back-to-back in 2008-09. Mecca’s Angel scored for the second year in a row for Michael Dods and the North in 2016 and her base near Darlington saddles Que Amoro today. Tim Easterby’s Art Power, Emaraaty Ana from Kevin Ryan’s Hambleton yard, James Bethell’s Middleham Moor-trained Moss Gill and David Griffiths’ Ornate, hailing from Bawtry, form the Yorkshire cohort this afternoon.
Now in it’s fourteenth year of sponsorship, Coolmore are a worldwide breeding and racing operation. With studs in Ireland, Australia and the United States they stand some of racings leading stallions including Galileo, Camelot and Austalia.

RECENT FORM
Since 1958, there have only been seven winners of the Nunthorpe aged six or above suggesting that we should view their chances with a degree of scepticism, however it is worth noting that all seven of those happened in the last fifteen years, including the 2018 winner Alpha Delphini, so perhaps it’s a trend on the move. Unlike, most races run on the flat, two-year-olds are allowed to mix it with their older rivals in the Nunthorpe. They have won the race twice since 1992 courtesy of Lyric Fantasy and Kingsgate Native in 2007 but don't have a representative this year.
Nine of the last ten winners achieved a top four finish on their most recent start, with Sole Power, Ortensia, Mecca’a Angel and Battaash the only four to get their head in front on their latest run. It’s also worth noting that all of the last ten winners had already won at least once earlier in the season, so this isn’t a race in which you want to be relying on a horse bouncing back to form.
KEY RACES The best guide is the Royal Ascot’s King’s Stand Stakes which has supplied ten of the last seventeen winners of the Nunthorpe. Run over 5f, the race was upgraded to a Group 1 in 2008, and since then Borderlescott, Ortensia and Sole Power have all taken it in en route to the Knavesmire. It falls to the King's Stand winner, Battaash to carry that flag today in his search to repeat last year's success.
RATING When it comes to official ratings, it is best to set the benchmark at 110 as only a handful of winners in recent years have fallen below that mark. Borderlescott (2008 and 2009), Sole Power (2010), Jwala (2013) and Alpha Delphini (2018) all managed to defy that trend, whilst Kingsgate Native did not have a rating when he triumphed in 2007.
TRAINERS Charles Hills and Michael Dods are the only three trainers with a runner this year to have tasted success on more than one occasion. Battaash is the star for Hills, while Dods relies on the filly Que Amoro.
BETTING The Nunthorpe has been no stranger to big priced winners in recent seasons, with Sole Power (2010), Margot Did (2011), Jwala (2013) and the 2018 winner, Alpha Delphini all obliging at odds of 20/1 or bigger. Historically however, the race has shown favour towards those at the head of the market with eleven of the last seventeen winners coming from within the top four in the market.
KEY TRENDS Side with those who ran in the King’s Stand Finished in the first four last time Won at least once this season
CONCLUSION Battaash is one of the best sprinters on planet Earth, with his track-record-breaking victory last year, as well as his King's Stand and King George Qatar Stakes victories this season illustrating his brilliance. He's clearly going to be very difficult to beat, but the softening of the ground and the progressive form of ART POWER gives the Yorkshire-trained three-year-old a serious chance of causing the upset in receipt of 2lb. The Tim Easterby-trained colt is unbeaten this season, galloping away with a Royal Ascot handicap before demolishing Millisle in the Group 3 Lacken Stakes at Naas. This is a big step up, but he looks to have the ability. Fellow three-year-old A'Ali is another with claims after taking the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes in good style on his last run. Statistics supplied by an independent analyst. All trends are ten year based unless stated. 52

RACE DESCRIPTION Our feature race, as a Group One, is of the highest possible quality, attracting the best sprinters in training. Made for the fastest of the fast at just five furlongs; it is also one of the few contests where all horses of all ages could go head-to-head, will having 2lbs less weight mean three-year-old Art Power can overcome older course record holder Battaash? Less than a minute of action will tell us. Tough to win, harder to pick the winner, perhaps pay close attention to the television coverage of the Parade Ring before investing your cash.

THE COOLMORE NUNTHORPE
KNAVESMIRE TIP Punters often closed their eyes and hoped for the best when it came to backing the mercurial BATTAASH - his temperament often got the better of him in the preliminaries - but with no proper crowds in the UK following the resumption of racing this year, Charlie Hills’ stable star has really flourished. He banished his Ascot demons when landing the King’s Stand, broke the track record in the King George at Glorious Goodwood and now appears better than ever so back-to-back Nunthorpe victories could be on the cards. Exciting C&D winner Art Power can land the silver medal ahead of fellow three-year-old A’ali.

BREEDERS’ CUP 2020 The field in the Coolmore Nunthorpe demonstrate the global nature of top class flat racing competition. To further encourage this competition Breeders’ Cup Ltd have offered an attractive incentive to the winner as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. The successful sprinter this afternoon, if nominated with Breeders’ Cup, will receive both free entry and a guaranteed start gate in the six and a half furlongs $1m Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint to be run at Keeneland, Kentucky on Saturday, November 7th. Combined with a travel allowance of $40,000 this is a bonus to US bound connections. Understandably, any travel and quarantine restrictions issued in response to the pandemic will need to be observed. As an indication of how highly the York contest is regarded worldwide, it is the only UK sprint to have been provided with this bonus.

DOUBLING UP DOWN UNDER
Whilst Australia’s premier racecourse might be more than 10,500 miles from York, operating in a different hemisphere; the links between the Knavesmire and Flemington are actually very close. Not only do the teams at the two venues regularly share best practice but their signature contests are interwoven by the participants. As recently as last year, three thoroughbreds graced both the Sky Bet Ebor and the Lexus Melbourne Cup; with the Charlie Fellowes trained, Prince of Arran, being placed second in “the race that stops the nation” after a top ten finish at York.
Prince of Arran
What’s more, in three of the last four renewals of the Lexus Melbourne Cup the Sky Bet Ebor winner has made the top ten. Though the current Covid-19 crisis will add further to the challenge of doing the double in 2020, there have been a couple of near misses in recent times. Both Heartbreak City in 2016 and Purple Moon in 2007, headed down under as champions to find only one better in their bid for a famous double.
Heartbreak City (r)
Purple Moon (r)
The two courses offer valuable prize money and are widely regarded as a proper test of the racehorse, so it is not easy to land a major prize at either never mind, both. That honour so nearly went the way of Rekindling, who gave Joseph O’Brien a first major success in the Melbourne Cup of that November having been placed fourth in the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes in the northern hemisphere in the May of 2017.

Cross Counter
FUN TIMES REMEMBERED As well as the star horses, the same sense of fun is shared by the occasions that host the feature races. Last year, York Racecourse was honoured to be the only European host to the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its charitable global tour. Over a memorable few days, the unique trophy was the star of numerous racegoers selfies as well as visiting racing yards and the East Yorkshire village that shares its name. Though for many followers on Social media, it was the appearance with the irrepressible Yorkshire Terriers that captured their hearts.
A year later and Cross Counter gave the Godolphin operation their first victory at Flemington, however the Charlie Appleby trailblazer had only managed a close up second on the Knavesmire in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur of that August. It had been the opposite way around for the recently-retired Max Dynamite in 2015, when the Ricci family owned gelding partnered Frankie Dettori into the York Winner’s Enclosure in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup, to just miss out in Australia, behind Prince of Penzance. In more than quarter of a century since Vintage Crop so memorably became the first European trained of Melbourne’s big race, only two other raiders have come home with the famous three-handled trophy. Whether any of this week’s champions will join that elite list, only time can tell, but York has certainly been an important part of the career of many who have already come close. 5th Race 3.45 The British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race)
Distance: 7f Race Type: Maiden Prize Money: £30,000 Age: 2 Stalls: Farside
About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres) See page 74 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Still the most valuable maiden in the UK calendar, this race is limited to two-year-old horses that have yet to win a race. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. This race also qualifies under the Plus 10 bonus scheme. The advice is to rely on your choice of the two ‘p’s, pedigree or pin!

KNAVESMIRE TIP NAVAL CROWN displayed plenty of promise when finishing third on his debut at Newmarket in July and he was far from disgraced when third in the Listed Pat Eddery Stakes when last seen. That form was boosted when the fourth won a Listed race at Newbury last weekend and this son of Dubawi should take plenty of beating today. Tawleed will have gone into many a notebook after his debut at Goodwood, while others to note include Broomy Law and Rushmore.

RACE DESCRIPTION A new race to proceedings, so you don’t even have previous trends to help in solving another ticklish handicap, and a competitive all-female handicap at that, again for 3-y-o and older, this time over ten furlongs. The handicap rating band of 85-100 means that it will attract some pretty smart types (like for the equally behind closed doors cricketers, a score of over 100 denotes a top performer). The horse considered by the handicapper as the best will carry the most weight; Chamade today. Look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name.

KNAVESMIRE TIP CHAMADE took advantage of a drop in class to score on her handicap debut at Goodwood, getting the better of Waliyak, and, despite a 5lb pull at the weights in favour of the latter, Ralph Beckett’s filly could have more to offer on a softer surface. Virgin Snow has been running with credit at a higher level recently and may benefit from a first-time hood, while Asiaaf cannot be discounted either.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Eastern World has done little wrong in four starts thus far and looks sure to give another good account, but FINEST SOUND is 4lb better off for finishing just over two lengths behind Charlie Appleby’s charge last time and he could reverse that form en route to a win in this contest. The Simon & Ed Crisford-trained gelding impressed at both Haydock and Ascot prior to that solid placed effort at Newmarket latest and the demands of this race should be perfect for him. Brunch and Cold Front both arriving in winning form and could feasibly be involved at the business end.
