Research in the heart WE DEDICATE THIS ISSUE OF ON STAGE TO A BRAND, BOSCH, THAT THROUGH ITS LONG STORY (IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1886 IN STUTTGART BY ROBERT BOSCH) HAS BEEN CONSTANTLY PURSUING INNOVATION AND

COMMITTED TO THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PRODUCTS, REWARDED BY GLOBAL SUCCESS AND FAME. Sonia Maritan sacrificed a bank holiday in Italy to fly to Frankfurt and at-

tend a global meeting introducing the latest news from the big German corporation. Media were invited to a real technology show where technical topics were presented in a brilliant way (though not “silly), and they put their own hands on ultramodern high-performance appliances, and not only... just think of the new router that will no longer threaten the hands and fingers of joiners: Sonia Maritan was enthusiastic about it! Such commitment in a global context is quite significant, as manual work still

involves many people and remains essential even in countries with advanced technology. Efficiency, silent operation, light weight and safety are all topics that come alive in Sonia Maritan’s report about her trip to Frankfurt.

Digital revolution LAST JUNE 2, IN FRANKFURT, BOSCH HELD THE BLUE INNOVATION SUMMIT 2016. THE GROUP’S MISSION IS CLEAR: FOCUS ON USERS RATHER THAN PRODUCTS, AND WITH 4 BILLION PEOPLE CONNECTED IN 2020, DIGITIZATION IS GOING TO CHANGE THE POWER TOOLS BUSINESS. FOR BOSCH, ANTICIPATING THIS CHANGE MEANS MANAGING THE PROCESS TO AVOID WASTE, WHILE CREATING A MORE HOLISTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH PRODUCTS. The Summit dealt with plenty of topics: the development of tools with Connectivity feature for professionals, the Bosch Pocket Assistant product recognition system for professional users, the new Bosch profes-

battery-powered screwdrivers Bosch Professional: convenient, efficient and durable. The underlying principles and philosophy for these families of products, illustrated in detail hereafter, are probably the reasons for the success of a globally recognized Group. It’s not about connecting devices,

but rather connecting people, as devices have become part of our lives: all you have to do is imagine a social activity and make it digital, for instance fixing the broken string of a tennis racket. Four billion people will be connected in 2020, according to Google, so the questions from myself and all attending media, about one hundred journalists and bloggers from 14 European countries, are: will digital technology change the power tools industry? Has digitization change our lives in the past 10 years? 61% of users use digital tools and 9 out of 10 projects exceed the initial budget. Workers only dedicate 30% of their actual working time to production, the rest being wasted to commute, prepara-

tions and administration requested from each function. Productivity must be increased and processes managed to avoid waste. The solutions required to support customer needs are central: you have to focus on users rather than products, and to do so, you have to analyze the ecosystem of a product to deploy a more holistic approach. Bosch gives practical answers and, in order to optimize the preparation of the actual job, they offer wireless power tools charging, which allows to re-charge the tools while you are working or traveling to work. “We want to be reliable partners for our users, they told us from the stage. battery is compatible with old tools! The wireless mower is one of the news, just like many other products. Within the digital ecosystem, the difference is in the connectivity among components, as well as technical details like increased battery power achieved by connecting the battery cells by laser welding (which reduces the resistance of connection points); or heat management, which extends the battery life if heat can be controlled and the battery cooled down.

The digital revolution will result into smart objects, whereby all products will be recognizable and identifiable; this is useful to collect data, have an updated view of working tools and a safer environment. Considering that all power tools need electricity, Bosch offers a very innovative electronic system, knowing that technology should fascinate users with a charging, battery and measurement system. Several speakers took the stage during the day, all sharing the same enthusiasm and the capacity to communicate it, as one said “We are very proud of our brand”, they are aware of the customer-focused communication concept: “We are strong and unique”, if customers look for product information, they are there, customer service is the core of their work, “everything lies in your hands", this is the new brand communication by Bosch. The purpose of all products is to be connected, although of course interconnected systems are not compulsory (for privacy reasons), but rather available and accessible if necessary; but the decision is to be the first to take up the digital challenge, because they believe in it! User experience clearly defines this concept. No one thought they would use WhatsApp, but now it’s a standard messaging app, so Bosch will anticipate customer requirements in the same way! To achieve this, the customer will be in-

volved step-by-step, with no final solution, improving the product gradually before its launch. Interconnected products will be slightly more expensive, but not that much, as you can only pay for the additional module, or you can have an integrated solution. The digital revolution at Bosch has started. If you think how much you are ready to spend for consumer electronics, even if it's just for leisure, you can imagine that the optimization of "working time" will be welcomed enthusiastically by the users of the liquid society!

Making day-to-day work easier

Bosch Power Tools relies on connected products to make day-today work easier for professionals and increase the productivity and efficiency of each individual tradesperson. “The construction and trade sectors are under extreme pressure due to the continuous demands for high planning and execution quality,” explained Ralph Dammertz, Senior Vice President of Professional tools for industrialized markets at Bosch Power Tools, at the “Bosch Blue Innovation Summit” in Frankfurt. “It is here that our connected products and services for professionals are

being used: By linking a smartphone to a tool via Bluetooth, tradespeople can optimize their work processes and rule out errors such as those caused by the manual transfer of measuring values.”

Focus on professionals

From autumn 2016, Bosch Power Tools will be offering a total of seven new connected toys: A combi laser, two screwdrivers, two combi drills, an angle grinder and a workplace light. Two laser measures and a thermo detector which, when connected to mobile terminals, facilitate documentation are already available. The tools are

consistently tailored to users' needs. “This is what we call our 'User Experience' approach. We involve users in the product development process from the outset and adapt the function and design of our tools to their needs,” according to Dammertz. This is how Bosch Power Tools produces practicable innovations that are specifically targeted at areas where professionals have previously felt support was lacking. “From our analyses, we know, for example, that tradespeople today only spend 30 percent of their working hours performing actual construction activities. The rest of the time is dedicated to preliminary or

follow-up tasks such as preparing the vehicle or preparatory measurements. One solution that we therefore provide professionals with TrackMyTools – our cloud-based inventory management system, which is designed to help companies manage and locate their working equipment.” Via the tool's localization data saved in the cloud, tradespeople know where their tool is at all times and whether they have all the necessary equipment with them when attending a call-out or working on site. This saves time – which the tradesperson can then spend on productive activities such as screwing or drilling using the new Connectivity screwdrivers and combi drills.

Innovative cordless technology

“We are convinced that we will be able to continue offering tradespeople better solutions in the future which, through networking, will provide more added value – from the individual configuration through to remote diagnosis,” explained Dammertz. In addition to utilizing technical capacities, Bosch is constantly developing them to benefit the user. Wolfgang Hirschburger, Vice President Engineering for professional tools in industrialized markets, demonstrated solutions which Bosch has already successfully establi-

shed on the market. The introduction of lithium-ion batteries in power tools represented a milestone. This technology enabled smaller, more compact and at the same time high performance tools to be developed and resulted in the10.8 V class for professionals being brought to the market in 2005. Bosch is also the world's first supplier to enable the advantages of inductive energy transfer to be used with cordless tools. “Our Wireless Charging System , with which we have provided tradespeople with new ways of working efficiently using cordless tools, resulting in time and cost savings, has been in use since

2014,” according to Hirschburger. He claimed that the potential of cordless technology is far from exhausted. Since February this year, Bosch has been offering the GEN 230V-1500 Professional mobile socket: Thanks to its innovative lithium iron phosphate technology, it stores up to 1,650 watt hours of energy and provides a constant output of 1,500 watts – all without a mains supply. The latest example of innovative cordless technology from Bosch is the high-performance battery GBA 18V 6,3 Ah EneRacer Professional, which will be available from autumn 2016. An improved power connector within the cells ensures lower internal resistance, which means that higher currents can

be drawn from the cells over a longer time. The result is an increase in available power in a compact battery.

New technologies for user protection

“Rather than developing individual solutions, we think in systems,” explained Hirschburger. To do this, in the field of sensor systems, for example, Bosch Power Tools uses the expertise of other business areas such as Bosch Sensortec and the Bosch automotive division. “We enable tradespeople to use this expertise, such as in our 'KickBack Control' function for screwdrivers and rotary hammers.”

Bosch sensors – which are used especially for this purpose – can reduce the risk of injury caused by kickback and are a good example of how new technologies are being applied in the interests of user protection. User comfort is also playing an increasingly important role. With the new Connectivity products for professionals, Bosch is well-positioned: Tradespeople can, for example, individually configure their connected tools and save their settings for future tasks. Intelligent displays directly on the tool, known as HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces), will also make working easier. “The long-term goal is to network all of Bosch's professional power tools and thus to offer users added value.”

THE ‘WIRELESS CHARGING SYSTEM’ FROM BOSCH IS WELCOMING A NEW ADDITION: A 2.5 AH BATTERY WITH 10.8 V. WITH THIS BATTERY, TRADESPEOPLE CAN ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF INDUCTIVE CHARGING IN THE 10.8 V CLASS FOR THE FIRST TIME. AS WITH THE 18 V DEVICES, TOOLS USING THESE BATTERIES ARE CHARGED WHENEVER THEY ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE ‘WIRELESS CHARGING’ STATION, ENSURING THAT THEY ARE READY FOR USE AT ALL TIMES.

“It's in your hands” – Users are the focus of communication

The quality of professional power tools from Bosch is based on a precise analysis of the user's needs, their day-to-day work and permanent dialog with professionals. In terms of communication too, there will be increased focus on the user in the future: “It's in your hands” – this is the main idea behind the new brand communication which Bosch presented at the “Bosch Blue Innovation Summit”. Martina Ehrmann, Regional President Europe and Asia for professional tools in industrialized markets, explained

what Bosch means by this. “The professional has the expertise – we provide them with the right products and services to optimally use this expertise and thus to perform their activities as efficiently as possible.” Bosch considers itself to be a partner for trade and industry. “For us, 'User Experience' means that we bundle together our expertise and that of the professionals to achieve a common purpose: Optimum work results and maximum productivity.”
