Hopes and fears THE WORLD OUR GENERATIONS ARE LIVING THROUGH AS THEY MOVE THROUGH HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY IS PINK AND BLACK, LIKE SUNSET ON THE BALTIC SEA AND THE LEATHER JACKET I'M WEARING. On one hand, in recent decades more than ever, poverty and malnutrition have been pushed back, with larger and larger shares of populations achieving

decent living standards and getting access to basic goods and services that offer a life of dignity, improve education and employment opportunities, give the possibility to raise a family and constantly improve your living standards and create a better future for children. On the other hand, intolerance and fanaticism are achieving unprecedented

peaks, with cowardly actions designed to hit people in their daily lives, in the name of extremisms, religious beliefs and political doctrines, all increasingly ferocious. Among these, the exasperated and exclusive pursuit of economic profit holds a special place, as the most “popular” and common vice around the world. Now more than ever, the universe has "seven unknown variable”, where periods of social and economic turmoil happen at fast pace, with hard-todecipher dynamics, with contradictions and economic inequalities that are equally

shared by post-capitalism and so-called communism, whose industrial practices exceed the worst standards of paleo-capitalism, before Henry Ford realized that his employees represented the biggest market for his cars. Whether good or bad, it’s a world of huge and fascinating complexity, where concepts are taken to extremes and opposite trends coexist, with developments that are inconsistent with the real practices of the industrial world and the fierce needs of emerging countries. We are looking for virtuous examples in daily life and in the production and logistic processes of the Western world,

in order to extend the life of future generations, while the deadliest and maybe irreparable environmental damage is done in countries where the voices against formidable concentrations of economic and political power are toughly repressed. Within such dynamics, the civilized world keeps growing: it creates urban landscapes of amazing beauty, it protects unique natural landscapes with extraordinary commitment, it preserves ancestral traditions with heart-rending passion and it drives scientific and technological progress beyond every limit, as a form of compensa-

tion. Such progress creates margins of well-being and experiential culture that make life worth living. Back to us, On stage is a webbased monograph that tells about this world, with attention and curiosity, but not only. It's about landscapes, cities, projects, technical and scientific findings, a small counterweight to the stories of brutality and ignorance that the big media are forced to report. We expect an international audience on our English language portal to get useful hints for reflection and new awareness from this reading.

We dedicate this detailed reportage to the French capital, going back to those three places which a large group of journalists from all over the world (in the picture, we are all standing before the Philharmonie) reached in a bus that offered all sorts of facilities and comfort, from snacks to a toilet that really took many of us by surprise!

Sustainable and efficient buildings for the Paris Region THE PARIS REGION NEEDS IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY ARE VERY LARGE. BESIDES RESIDENTIAL HOUSING, MANY COMPANIES HAVE LOCATED THEIR EUROPEAN HEAD OFFICE IN THE REGION. The Paris Region is the world number one tourist region, counting many hospitality buildings(151,000 hotel rooms). All these playes wish to reduce their carbon foot print and energy bills. Therefore, leading French corporations (Bouygues Immobilier, Schneider), start ups (SmartImpulse) and international companies (US Enlighted) have developed a renowned and valued know-how for sustainable & smart construction projects on the territory, among them: Arena Nanterre, Philarmonie de Paris and Majunga Tower.

SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN 2017, THE “ARENA NANTERRE-LA DÉFENSE” IS AN “INDOOR” STADIUM AND THE GROUND OF THE “RACINGMETRO 92” RUGBY TEAM, IN THE HAUTS-DE-SEINE REGION. A French sporting legend since 1882, the club was taken over in 2006 by its current president Jacky Lorenzetti. The stadium will also be used as a large performance space accommodating 10,000 to 40,000 people. It will be the largest indoor multipurpose facility with a variable capacity in France. Located in the town of Nanterre, close to the “Grande Arche” in La Défense, this project falls within the scope of the “Seine-Arche operation of national interest” – the status accorded by the State to territorial projects which are aligned with national strategies and objectives. It stands in the rectangle formed by the new neighborhood’s road grid. One side of the rectangle is formed by an office building which will house the General Council of the Hauts-de-Seine. As the headquarters of the Racing club, this ultra-modern ground will provide the club with non-match revenue generated from a wide range of entertainment event.

Majunga Tower, reinventing the office block MAJUNGA IS A TOTALLY REINVENTED VERSION OF THE OFFICE BLOCK WHICH INTEGRATES PERFECTLY INTO THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND THE CITY. BREAKING AWAY FROM THE MONOLITHIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE TOWER BLOCKS OF PREVIOUS GENERATIONS, MAJUNGA IS BRIGHT, OPEN, AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY. ITS APPEARANCE IS CHARACTERIZED BY THE FLOWING STYLE OF THE FAÇADES, CONSISTING OF THREE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY SHAPED VERTICAL STRIPS PLACED SIDE BY SIDE. Majunga is the first tower in La Défense to offer outdoor areas on every floor(loggias or balconies), a pleasant open area every two panels and 2,000 m² of terraces and gardens around the base of the building. Thanks to its glass landing areas, high ceilings and bioclimatic façades adapted to the tower's orientation, enabling the maximum amount of natural light to penetrate. mental performance will enable future users to significantly reduce their energy consumption and their carbon footprint. Already recognized in the 2012 BREEAM Awards, this performance will be validated with "Excellent" HQE and BREEAM certifications. Majunga is the creation of Jean-Paul Viguier, a DPLG (French government approved) architect, graduate of Harvard University, member of the Academy of Architecture and Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects; his architectural approach takes into account the changing characteristics

of cities in the 21st century, the environment and users' needs. His practice, Jean-Paul Viguier et Associés, Architecture and Urbanism, has established an international reputation, with projects such as Coeur Défense in Paris, the Sofitel Water Tower hotel in Chicago and the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. He has received numerous awards for his work, including: • The Grand Prix du Moniteur des Villes for the André Citroën Park • The Equerre d'Argent for Architecture for the Hôtel Industriel in Paris (19th arrondissement) • The Architectural Record-

Business Week Award in New York for the head office of Astra Pharmaceutical in Rueil Malmaison. With Majunga, Jean-Paul Viguier wanted to completely reinvent the office block, creating a unique environment that breaks with the tower block design of previous generations and offers its occupants a living and working space that promotes well-being, interaction and performance. Aware of the challenges of sustainable development, Unibail-Rodamco has made environmental criteria a fundamental aspect of the Majunga project.

A record of achievments: the first high-rise building in France to receive BBC certification in its design phase, the first office tower in continental Europe to obtain BREEAM certification at the "Excellent" level in its design phase, excellent HQE certification in the design phase with the achievement of 11 out of a total of 14 very high performance targets, a primary energy consumption of less than 80 kWh PE/m2/year, which is 5 times more efficient than existing office buildings*, an exceptional carbon footprint due to its location, 4 times lower than a building located in the outskirts of Paris.

Philharmonie de Paris

LOCATED IN A WORKING-CLASS DISTRICT, OUTSIDE THE CENTRE OF PARIS, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARC DE LA VILLETTE, THE PHILHARMONIE RISES READY TO BE A NEW CENTRE OF PILGRIMAGE FOR MUSIC LOVERS, LOCAL RESIDENTS AND EVEN TOURISTS. Jean Nouvel has created a building that is audacious both inside and out. Covered with 340,000 bird-shaped aluminium sheets in various colours, the building is a type of silver mountain that reflects the green of the park, embeds itself within it and invites passers-by to wander around it. The Grande Salle, which was not designed following either the "vignoble" or "boîte à chaussures" shapes which were traditional until now, premiers a new, enveloping and adjustable model. It was designed simulating the warm colours and organic forms of a forest. Nouvel chose a unique solution to offer an all-enveloping experience by placing the audience in balconies hanging at various heights. In this way, they are suspended, immersed in the hall and this gives the sensation of being within the orchestra. The sound literally envelops each and every one of these spaces as it can come in from behind.

An answer to acoustic requirements FIGUERAS INTERNATIONAL SEATING WORKED PERSONALLY WITH THE ACOUSTIC ENGINEERS AND STAGE DESIGNERS TO ENSURE THAT THE SEATING DESIGNED BY JEAN NOUVEL ATELIERS FULFILLED THE DEMANDING ACOUSTIC REQUIREMENTS AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE HALL'S EXCEPTIONAL ALL-ROUND ACOUSTICS. The challenge of the project lay in creating a seat with extremely low acoustic absorption which would allow higher reverberation to be generated. This would compensate for the large size of the hall, despite its appearance, as it is wide and wellcushioned. Various changes to the seating and up to 10 acoustic tests, in laboratories in Paris and Barcelona, were needed to achieve the desired product. Another challenge of the project was to create made to measure seating, a tailor-made product that would adapt perfectly to all corners of the undulating hall. Jean Nouvel conceived the Philharmonie as an adjustable concert hall, which could be adapted for any type of concert or show. Because of this, there are two mobile seating systems and Figueras’ seats had to adapt to them. The choir, behind the orchestra, has a telescopic platform for 319 people.

Jean Nouvel wanted to go back to the classic choir format, but in this case the seats can be hidden if the area is not in use. The second mobile system is in the stalls in front of the orchestra and enables 476 seats to be hidden under the floor. In this way the stage moves back, allowing standing room for around 1,000 people for concerts of other types of music. 1,800 Philharmonie model seats were installed, which feature a synchronised back and seat mechanism so that it takes up the minimum amount of space when folded up. The Philharmonie seats have 8 different upholstery colours, 5 different widths and 4 different shades of wood. The wood was treated to get the maximum possible shine, much like pianos, and the different coloured seats mark out different areas, in accordance with the architect's criteria. The hall also has 282 seats in a variation on the same model with a fixed back for shallow tiers and 319 "minispace" seats which are specifically adapted to the demands of the stage de-

signer for the choir. The Figueras Oxymore seat - designed by Jean Nouvel - was also chosen to enlarge capacity if needed, as there are 300 seats that can be stored away or laid out, depending on the occasion. With this adaptability, the Paris Philharmonie can host classical music, pop, jazz and rock concerts and all kinds of shows.
