THE SPANISH ECONOMY

The economy of Spain is a highly developed social market economy. It is the world’s fifteenth-largest by nominal GDP and the sixth-largest in Europe.

In 2021, Spain was the twentieth-largest exporter in the world and the sixteenth-largest importer. Spain is listed 27th in the United Nations Human Development Index and 37th in GDP per capita by the World Bank. According to The Economist in 2005, Spain had the world's 10th highest quality of life. Some of the main areas of economic activity are the automotive industry, medical technology, chemicals, shipbuilding, tourism, and the textile industry.

Following the financial crisis of 2007–2008, the Spanish economy plunged into recession, entering a cycle of negative macroeconomic performance. The economic boom of the 2000s was reversed, leaving over a quarter of Spain's workforce unemployed by 2012. In aggregated terms, the Spanish GDP contracted by almost 9% during the 2009–2013 period.

The economic situation started improving by 2013–2014. By then, the country managed to reverse the record trade deficit which had built up during the boom years. It attained a trade surplus in 2013, after three decades of running a trade deficit. The surplus kept strengthening during 2014 and 2015.

In 2015, the Spanish GDP grew by 3.2%, a rate not seen since 2007, the last year before the world financial crisis struck. This growth rate was the highest among the larger EU economies that year. In just two years (2014–2015), the Spanish economy recovered 85% of the GDP lost during the 2009–2013 recession. This success led some international analysts to refer to Spain's current recovery as "the showcase for structural reform efforts". Strong GDP growth was registered also in 2016, with the country growing twice as fast as the Eurozone average.

in this regard, the Spanish economy was forecast to remain the best-performing major economy in the Eurozone in 2017. Spain's unemployment rate fell substantially from 2013 to 2017. The real unemployment rate is much lower, as there is an estimation of millions of people working in the grey market, people who count as unemployed or inactive yet still perform jobs. Although estimates of the hidden economy vary, the real Spanish GDP may be around 20% bigger as it is estimated that the underground economy of Spain moves annually 190 billion Euros (US$224 billion).

Among high income European countries, only Italy and Greece are estimated to have larger underground economies than Spain. Meaning that Spain may have higher purchasing power as well as a smaller Gini coefficient than shown in official numbers. The latest forecasts from the OECD show Spain’s growth rate surpassing 2% for 2023, with just a slight dip expected in 2024. Economists at the policy forum highlight the resilience of Spain’s economy, which has outperformed expectations.

• 4 (150 gr. aprox) halibut steaks

• 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

1 jalapeno, minced

1 tbsp. freshly chopped cilantro

Juice of 1 lime

Sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Preheat grill to medium-high and brush halibut with oil on both sides then season with salt and pepper.

Grill halibut until cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.

Make salsa: Mix together all ingredients in a medium bowl and season with salt and pepper.

Serve salsa over halibut

For many women, their abdomen does not return to normal after childbirth. Expansion during and after pregnancy can cause a separation of the abdominal walls known as diastasis recti.

Diastasis is not just an aesthetic problem. Weakening of the abdominal wall brings with it other associated problems which can affect the quality of life of anyone suffering from it.

Diastasis recti is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles in the anterior abdominal wall. Under normal circumstances these stay together in the midline, otherwise known as the linea alba. This is not be confused with an abdominal hernia. For comparison, the abdominal wall is similar to a wall which separates one room from another, a hernia would be a small hole in this wall while diastasis would be a bulge in the wall.

Often diastasis is accompanied by an abdominal hernia as when there is a weakness in the abdominal wall, on exertion this thinner wall allows a hernia to develop more easily.

What causes diastasis?

This occurs most commonly after pregnancy, due to tension and distension of the abdominal wall. Other factors that encourage diastasis are obesity, the continuous use of corsets or muscle tears.

Following pregnancy, the abdomen usually regains its shape naturally or with the help of exercise. In the cases when diastasis persists, treatment is advisable. The abdominal wall has an important support function, helping us to stand upright; a weakness there can cause lower back pain, incontinence (due to weakening of the pelvic floor), or problems of the digestive system, such as constipation.

Dr. Daniel Palomo, a specialist in gastrointestinal surgery at HC Marbella Hospital, explains what diastasis is and the different treatments currently available.

What treatments are available for diastasis?

The first treatment used to try and resolve this separation is exercise. It is extremely important that exercises are prescribed and supervised by a specialist physiotherapist, as performing them incorrectly can create an abdominal hernia.

When, despite the exercises, the muscles do not close, a surgical solution may be proposed. Currently a minimally invasive and more aesthetic technique, the REPA technique, is available. A procedure performed laparoscopically, using three small incisions to access the space containing the rectus abdominis muscles. The muscles are approximated to the midline using a continuous suture, recovering their anatomy, strength and original tension. Sometimes, a mesh is placed inside the plication to give added strength to the union.

An AI-based system can help airlines identify common passenger complaints and take steps to improve their experience

Customer satisfaction is the key to success, especially in the airline industry, where companies are constantly competing for business. A study from the University of Missouri has used artificial intelligence to analyse thousands of customer reviews and identify airline pain points.

Sharan Srinivas, an adjunct professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Department of Marketing, used artificial intelligence to analyse nearly 400,000 unique and public customer reviews for six US airlines. After sorting the information, it developed algorithms that identified the most common themes covered in reviews and determined customer sentiment (positive or negative) towards each of the identified themes, allowing airlines to better understand the perspective and experience of customers. The results showed that most of the negative opinions related to lost luggage, uncomfortable seats and flight cancellations, while customers valued more positively the inflight entertainment, the service of the ground and cabin staff. and service in first and second class seats.

4. Customize the cabin environment through seat height and temperature adjustments.

5. Use analytical models to optimize flight schedules and waiting time between flights.

6. Use an artificial intelligence-based approach to monitor the health of equipment.

7. Introduce a more flexible booking policy (ie no cancellation fees, no change fees, advance information on costs).

8. Provide ticket agents with better task clarifications, performance-based feedback, and tokens of appreciation to improve morale and customer interactions.

9. Install more accurate baggage tracking systems using RFID tags instead of the usual barcode tags.

10. Provide more frequent and automated baggage-related updates to passenger phones.

11. Use biometrics and block chain technology to eliminate the need to present multiple identification documents at multiple checkpoints. This would eliminate the need for passengers to show a boarding pass, passport and ID at each checkpoint.

Srinivas said that airlines can use this information to determine their next steps as a company. According to Srinivas. "It's impossible to hear the voice of every customer and potential customer, especially on the larger airlines, but our software and recommendations will help airlines think about things from the consumer's perspective."

Srinivas was inspired to conduct this investigation by an incident in 2017, in which a United Airlines security representative dragged a passenger off a plane when he refused to leave because the flight was overbooked. United Airlines officials claimed they had picked the passenger at random, but the outrage he sparked in customer comments and on social media was staggering. As a consequence, United Airlines had trouble filtering all customer feedback. Srinivas says that the AI software in this study would allow companies like United Airlines to analyse customer feedback and respond more quickly to problems that arise.

Srinivas has used different versions of artificial intelligence to track customer approval in many different industries, including insurance, tailored clothing, and universities. He says it can also be used to interpret doctors' notes and patients' opinions.
