What can I say about Christmas that hasn’t already been said multiple ways and many times over? What tips and words of wisdom can I offer that hasn’t already been given? Two recent holidays are now past (Halloween and Thanksgiving) and we are at the half-way mark to complete the other two (Christmas and New Year’s). Then the calendar pages will speed on toward the next special days of - Valentine’s Day and President’s Day.

As I get older and the clocks keep turning, I sometimes feel the activities, events and destinations are whirling around in my head so fast that it makes me dizzy. Every month, I receive more press releases, phone messages, social media tags and emails than the month before. They just keep coming and flowing all over my desk (and it’s a huge one) to where I have given up any thoughts of trimming the list down to share only a few. Where does the time go? The clock in my office chimes the time every hour and I could swear it goes off every 10 minutes. Let’s face it. There are just so many wonderful places to go, things to do and people to see to fill our weekends with holiday magic, I MUST share them all. But alas, the deadline is here once again and I must give in to closing down this issue. But there’s always more to come in our weekly newsletters, and before you know it, the New Year will be here for another wonderful issue filled with ideas for your next extended weekend getaways. What was your Most Memorable Christmas? One of my first years hosting the family gathering comes to mind. I had been assured it was okay if I wanted to keep things simple. It went against every tradition I thought should be upheld, but instead of a full, sit-down dinner, we had everything laid out on the kitchen counter so everyone could serve themselves. As my sixyear-old nephew went through the line, he told me I was the best cook in the whole world! I remember it not because of the compliment, but because of the irony. On his plate, there was a pile of potato chips and two cookies. I must admit, as I looked over the assortment of holiday specialties on the buffet, that sort of popped my bubble. Sometimes the most memorable were not the best. But then, I realized: it’s not about me.

What was your Most Magical Christmas? This one is a little bit easier. We were never taught to believe in Santa Claus. On the contrary, we were taught not to speak to strangers. And this loud man wearing funny red clothes was definitely strange to me. I remember

specifically refusing to tell him my name. My sister was a bit more vocal. She told him if he was really Santa, he would already know her name. You simply can’t argue with the logic of a child. That being said, we were nearly adults when we realized how the Santa who didn’t know our names still had packages for us with our names on them. Apparently, our grandparents were already practicing the policy: it’s not about me.

What was your Most Meaningful Christmas? It’s odd what we do and do not remember. The first year after college when I was living several states away, I began checking airline rates and schedules in September. I bought my ticket and finished gift shopping in October, making sure to get something for everyone which was small and easy to fit into my lug-

As a result, I found out I usually enjoy the preparation and expectancy of a magical event more often than the actual event. You see, I don’t remember much of anything else about that Christmas. What sticks in my mind the most was packing for my return trip. It had never once occurred to me to make plans for a way to get any Christmas gifts I might receive back home with me. Yes, I think perhaps I was beginning to get a grasp on

the true meaning of Christmas that year. That was the year I embraced the concept: it’s not about me. Have you ever noticed how no matter how good or bad a Christmas may have been, we always make plans to do it again and again and again? Why? Tradition! Now, I’m not stuck on any ritual simply because it has always been done. I prefer to choose which customs I enjoyed enough to recreate, if not for myself, but for others to experience all the good things I found enjoyable. This is how I choose to practice: it’s not about me. So, what Christmas is the most memorable, magical and meaningful? No contest. It’s always the next one.

There has been a notable 3.25% increase in NFL attendance in 2022 to 69,442 per game, which is the second-highest figure in the last 19 years. With this in mind, Viator sought to uncover the best US states for sports fans to visit as part of their “All-American” Index.1,2 To accomplish this, the experts created a points-based index system that analyzed various metrics. These included the number of sports venues per state, average stadium capacities, number of male professional sports teams and college football teams, as well as the average attendance to ultimately uncover the best US states for sports tourism. Florida is the ultimate US state for sports tourism Viator can reveal that Florida is the top US state for sports enthusiasts to visit, with an overall sports tourism score of 9.24/10. total average of 341,978 fans per game across all sports, it secures the second-highest spot nationally and is more than double that of North Carolina (143,445), despite having a similar population. Methodology: 1. Viator sought to discover which US state is the best for sports travel. This press release is part of a wider Viator study into the most “All-American” states. 2. To analyze which state could boast the most sporting venues, the number of stadiums (football, soccer, baseball) was sourced, as were indoor arenas (basketball and hockey). College sports venues were also included. 3. The total number of professional and college sporting venues per 100 square miles was calculated for each state. As well as the number of average attendances per professional games per state including NFL, NHL, MLS, MBS, NBA and the average number of attendances to college football games per state. To supplement the number of venues the average capacity per state was calculated. While others in the group hit the sack early, we might be up dancing till the music ended. We could all have the sleep schedule we desired without disrupting others.

After dinner, some would see a show, others might gamble. Then, we would reconvene and find a place to chat or listen to music. Some in the group would turn in early, and others would dance the night away. Cruising makes it

Each state has a unique story, but none more internationally impactful than South Carolina. Theirs is a tale that begins with the establishment of the colony and has resonated throughout the centuries and the legacy of enslavement has been entwined throughout the culture in both overt and covert ways. This history that often makes people uncomfortable, but is necessary none the less, to relate a “round unvarnished tale.” The best way to understand South Carolina’s story is to immerse yourself in the sounds, smells, soundtrack and sites of the area that are a blend of all cultures. @Discover_SC Spanish explorers arrived in the South Carolina area in 1516. They were met by numerous bands of Native Americans, the largest being the Cherokee. In 1526 the Spanish started a settlement that failed almost immediately. They were followed in 1562 by the French Huguenots. English colonists founded the port City of Charleston in 1670 and it was named Charles Town in honor of England’s King Charles II. In 1690 the first shipment of black slaves arrived from Barbados and the systems and laws used to control institutional slavery were based on the Barbados model. Museum (IAAM) opened on Gadsdens’ Wharf, a historic site of trauma and modern reconciliation. Now home to an international museum it was the point of arrival for an estimated 45% of the United States enslaved Africans. The museum is creatively designed to reflect all aspects of these experiences. A comprehensive tour begins on the exterior. The building looms 13-ft. above the wharf and the African Ancestors Memorial Garden. The structure is suspended by 18 cylindrical pillars covered in oyster shell tabby, representing an important building material in the colonial era. Additional heritage elements in the garden include a wall of slave tags and sea grass garden of the type used in weaving baskets. In the East Yard an outline of the slave house that was there at the time can be seen. The house was used to quarantine the captives. The approximately 700 individuals who died there are memorialized with carved sculptures in the house. The iconic display, The Tide Tribute, is based upon a diagram of the Brookes slave ship. Based on the tide the water of the wharf reveals etched figures of the enslaved forever held beneath the

Inside the museum on two sides of the exterior it is possible for visitors to see the Charleston Harbor. The Aiken-Rhett House is one of the best-preserved ante-bellum townhouses in the country. Constructed in the 1820s and expanded in the 1830sand 1850s the house was maintained by the enslaved. Today the complex includes the house and exterior kitchen, original slave quarters and carriage house. Documents have revealed the names of 14 enslaved workers. After Emancipation 2 of the 14 chose to continue working there until their deaths. Site-based archeological excavations have yielded more than 10,000 artifacts. The Historic Charleston City Market is Charleston’s #1 Attraction and it is absolutely the best place to purchase handcrafted souvenirs and gifts. The 4-block-long market dates from 1790. Here you can find Corey Alston with All Things Gullah. His family is a stellar example of keepers of a heritage craft tradition. He is a 5th generation weaver and a direct descendent of a Gullah Geechee family. His authentic sweetgrass baskets are on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Art and may be commissioned. Jack Frost to Lead a Grand Snowball Fight Frostburg is a place where townspeople transform into elves! Yes, you read that right. An event that started in 2004 with the intent of creating a small winter holiday celebration to emphasize the importance of reading has evolved into a beloved tradition for townspeople and visitors alike.

WELLSBORO - Imagine Christmas trees without ornaments. During World War II, that is almost what happened. A small town in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, labeled Wellsboro, is a quintessential Christmas Village along Route 6 and nestled in the Allegheny Mountains came to the rescue. It is home to an extraordinary holiday story that is a part of history you may not know.

The Town That Save He eventually turned to Corning Glass and asked them to help him find a solution. Corning Glass stepped up to the plate. The Wellsboro Corning factory produced lightbulbs less than fifty miles from Corning headquarters. It was at the forefront of advancements in providing safe, indoor, electric lighting and was renowned for its productivity and innovations.

Let’s look at how it all began and why Wellsboro, “The Town That Saved Christmas,” should be on your Christmas travel list.

The Wellsboro Corning factory was instructed to change the light bulb production to glass ornaments. The factory already had a highspeed ribbon machine and, once retrofitted, could mass produce the ornaments labeled “Shiny Brite.”

History

Prior to World War II, the majority of Christmas ornaments were made of blown glass and imported from Germany. When Adolph Hitler’s forces invaded Poland, and the war was underway, there was a British blockade of goods from Europe, and the United States would no longer receive the 250 million ornaments imported each year. No one in the States was creating ornaments. Retailers would lose money, and

trees would have no ornaments. German immigrant Max Eckardt, who handled the distribution of ornaments to the F.W. Woolworth Company and other stores, knew he had to find a solution to the problem quickly. He wanted to find a producer of ornaments on U.S. soil.

The deal provided a United States manufacturing base for the ornaments, and Eckardt could also promote ornaments “Made in U.S.A.” He also designed the original Shiny Brite ornament boxes with Uncle Sam shaking the hand of Santa Claus. It was a win for all

involved. In the first year of operation, Wellsboro’s Corning employees produced over 40 million Shiny Brite ornaments and stocked the shelves in stores all over America. Your grandparents probably purchased Shiny Brite ornaments for their tree. The Shiny Brite manufacturing tradition continued for several decades, and the quaint town of Wellsboro took great pride in the notoriety as “The Town That Saved Christmas.”

Shiny Brite Ornaments Wellsboro manufactured 90% of all Christmas Ornaments worldwide from 1940 through 1979. The ornaments were sold at Ben Franklin, Woolworth, and J.J. Newberry stores.

As the years passed, they updated and improved their processes. A gentleman from Wellsboro developed the shrink wrap process, taking images from artwork and photos and printing them on the ornaments. They began making popular shaped ornaments such as Santa Claus and bells. If you are fortunate enough to find a

Shiny Brite Ornament box, it most likely does not list Wellsboro, PA, as the address. They list “Made in the U.S.A. or a New Jersey address that was the address of Max Eckard’s company. But all Shiny Brite ornaments were made in Wellsboro. Eventually, plastic replaced the glass ornaments, and demand dropped significantly. The Corning glass plant that created the Shiny Brite ornaments and shaped the town’s industrial legacy closed in 2016. Shiny Brites Still on Display You can still view some beautiful Shiny Brite ornaments in Wellsboro. The Penn Wells Hotel lobby hosts a year-round

display of Shiny Brite Ornaments, which form a large American flag. The Wellsboro Division of the Corning Glass Works (CGW) created the flag made of Shiny Brite ornaments to honor returning World War II veterans in 1946. The flag appeared in LIFE magazine and was eventually gifted to the Penn Wells Hotel. Holiday Events in Wellsboro During December, Christmas trees and wreaths placed on gas-lit lamp posts decorate the main streets of Wellsboro. Wellsboro hosts two holiday events in December: Dickens of a Christmas and Christmas on Main Street.

Dickens Of A Christmas

Wellsboro is known for its “Dickens Of A Christmas” celebration sponsored by the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce. Victorian marketplace featuring food and drink, gift items, and fun entertainment to rekindle the old-fashioned Christmas spirit. Attendees enjoy quartets, choirs, street performances, characters, and more.

Christmas on Main Street Celebration

They hold the Christmas on Main Street event the second weekend of December. The Christmas on Main Street celebration highlights “The Town that Saved Christmas” and the Shiny Brite ornaments. Over 30 displays of the historic ornaments made locally in the early 1940s are on display at various locations in Wellsboro. Horse-drawn wagon rides, live reindeer, and a live nativity scene are available.

Holiday Trains Are F

Trains became synonymous with Christmas as a means of travel during the Golden Age of railroading. Today, volunteers and spirited enthusiasts keep the flywheels turning on independent railways for the entertainment of locals and tourists. There has been a resurgence of interest in recreational train travel on small rail lines, which has spurred everything from murder mystery dinners on the tracks to luxury wine pairings through scenic countrysides. Beginning in November and up until Christmas Day, many railroads—especially in Pennsylvania—invite guests to climb aboard a holiday train for some old-fashioned, wholesome fun. Pennsylvania offers “the most prolific collection of railroad attractions throughout the country,” says American-Rails.com.
