PRIVATE MEMBERS STATEMENT Pamela Alvarez

Mr Speaker, friends in the House and to the people of New South Wales. It is a pleasure today to draw attention to one of our most excellent citizens, Pamela Alvarez. It is said Age appears best in four things: old wood is best to burn, old wine is best to drink, old authors to read and old friends to trust. And that is what Pamela is to the many people of Lane Cove. With much wisdom and a warm heart, Pamela can always be trusted upon, from new mothers to those traversing the legal system and everyone in between. Pamela is the kind word we’ve needed when we’re down as well as the hand-up we’ve required when it’s time to move forward.

Pamela has had an extraordinary life, with her fair share of joy and tragedy. Shortly after getting married in Brisbane Pamela and her new husband Gavin settled into Hunters Hill where Gavin was born. Their children Christina and John were also born in Hunters Hill. They then decided to move to Gloucester where they bought a property to raise beef cattle.

As per usual for Pamela, she drove head-first into the community. She became the Secretary of the Country Women’s Association. She managed to encourage a ballet teacher to teach in the town as well as instigate craft days for children and assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh award. Pamela organised a Wool Promotion Day for which Gloucester was awarded the CWA State first prize.

She also promoted the commencement of children’s swimming lessons in the town, having saved a child from a well incident for which she was given a Bravery Award.

Upon the tragic and premature death of her husband Gavin in 1976, Pamela returned to Hunters Hill with two young children. With a steely determination she has so often shown, Pamela reorganised her children’s lives, did a refresher course for Nursing and returned to full-time work. To further provide for her family, she began and completed a Law degree at Macquarie University around her full-time job.

Having completed her law degree, Pamela quickly rose through the ranks, being admitted as a Solicitor in 1989. She then spent a decade as a Prosecution lawyer in the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions. She became a Member of the International Commission of Jurists and was a Rapporteur on an Aboriginal Justice Mission to Bourke and Brewarrina. The President of the ICJ, The Hon Justice Michael Kirby, said of Pamela during this time, “I have found Ms Alvarez to be a lawyer with a conscience, a concern about her community and the wider world”.

Pamela retired from the DPP in 1999. However, this was not to signal a slowdown in her activity. Taking the opportunity to care for her grandson as her daughter went back to work, Pamela saw it as an opportunity to get more involved in her great passion, Hunters Hill.

She commenced a Grannies Group under the auspice of the Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill. The Grannies Group involved a group of grandparents who would take their grandkids on trips to the Opera House, visits to parks, zoos, pools and unique entertainment like The Wiggles.

From the Grannies Group came the start of a playgroup at St. Marks Church over eight years ago. Over 370 local families have fond memories, playing and sharing moments under the compassionate co-ordination of Pamela and a great team of volunteers. She also served on the Hunters Hill Playground Committee, the Community Services Advisory Committee and remains the sole surviving trustee of the Hunters Hill Theatre.

With limitless amounts of energy and enthusiasm, Pamela continues to be a bedrock of our local community. We thank you for your years of service and look forward to the joy of many more.

Letters to the Editor Golden memories of the Golden Wheel Dear Sir, I know the Golden Wheel Chinese Restaurant at Eastwood will be closing it’s doors soon and I thought I might share some observations with you and your readers.

Growing up in Eastwood, and as a kid at Eastwood Public School, our family often went to the Golden Wheel for dinner. As teenagers we would go there as a group, with lots of good memories.

Knowing it was soon to be closing down, some of us went the other night for dinner.

Going inside and passing under the large golden wagon wheel suspended from the ceiling was like walking back in time – the décor, the staff, all exactly the same as our fond and fading memories.

The menu too, reminiscent of the times when Chinese was an exotic and daring dining choice for Australians, the only one in Eastwood being the Golden Wheel.

As always, it’s “Australian Chinese”, with all the signature dishes that are still served at bowling clubs around the country – Mongolian lamb, honey king prawns, lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork.

We order some of them. The table has the classic “Lazy Susan” spinner in the middle, and even though we were the only table there to be served, the chef still rang a little bell when the meals were ready to be served.

The plates were not just put on the table, but food served to us from them with the onehanded spoon and fork technique that is not of-

ten seen these days.

We spoke with Jaynie and her sister Susie who has been waitressing there for 40 years plus her husband Alan Yu came out from the kitchen.

A quirky pair, Jenny is very “second-generation Aussie” in her language and mannerisms, and her husband retains Chinese mannerisms like smiling and stooping and speaking in patchy English.

Five of us local girls, now living in various parts of Sydney, used the experience to laugh together over old stories, and, finishing off with classic fried icecream, we felt happy nostalgia, and bid a fond farewell to a remnant of our childhood.

For others who grew up with the Golden Wheel, recommend passing by before October to give it a final spin.

Eastwood has certainly changed in the past few decades since I lived there.

The Western shops and restaurants shifted over time to suit the changing local demographic – goodbye to McDonalds, Red Rooster and so on, and hello to modern strongly lit Asian restaurants serving food you’d get overseas to Asian customers lined onto the streets, with their fast bowl of noodles or rice.

An understandable shift, indeed, as this is food and lifestyle similar to what they are accustomed to. It’s just a different lifestyle to dining in a restaurant with a slow meal over a nice bottle of wine, which is the market that the Golden Wheel caters for.

Meanwhile, Aussie families themselves have developed their tastebuds for Asian food beyond the Australianified versions from the

1970s to 1990s, and happily eat at all sorts of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Korean restaurants.

Only older Australians stick with the “Australian Chinese” dishes, and as there are less of them around, it’s hard to avoid coming to the end of an era for the Golden Wheel.

It will be remembered fondly though, by many. .

Streetlight woes in Hunters Hill Dear Sir, Having read Albert Lim’s (North Ryde) and Cliff Ventris’ (Beecroft) letters about their streetlight woes, we have them too in my street in Hunters Hill.

I live in at the bottom of a cul-de-sac and two lights are out at my end of the street.

It’s pitch black in a street that needs resurfacing badly.

I am worried for my safety when I take my dog out last thing at night.

I reported my streetlight outage to AusGrid on 8 May and my neighbours also did shortly afterwards.

I received, in response, an automated email saying it would take longer than usual to fix them.

After a month I rang AusGrid and asked what was happening.

In recent months, I was told, an AusGrid employee died as a result of trying to fix line problems.

This has resulted in AusGrid calling a halt to all line work - this doesn’t include simply replacing broken bulbs, it covers more serious issues - and reviewing its safety practices.

The outages in my street, and probably Albert’s and Cliff’s, aren’t just exhausted light bulbs.

AusGrid told me there was a broken line on both poles.

We had an AusGrid employee working on the poles last week but the work is ’still in progress’ according to my second call to AusGrid after the employee had worked on the lights and they still didn’t turn on at night.

Reviewing the practices, as it’s undoubtedly done by a committee, may take some time.

I will be surprised and rather delighted if our lights are fixed before daylight saving kicks in.

Blimey, just when I sensed a community consensus in favour of the Heart of Ryde concept, along comes a predictable liberal scare style response such as a ‘building a financial hole’, to what seems a very sound proposal by Council.

The big Heart of Ryde scare includes the flights of ornate sets of access stairs to access lower levels, but are minor issues compared to advice that Council will be plunged into debt and will be reliant on property development contributions.

Further, what if the economy goes into recession and building costs blow out leading to an inevitable cut in essential services – the scare is all neatly parcelled in a question: what happens if something goes wrong?

It does surprise me however, one important consideration has been overlooked – what if an asteroid impacts Earth at a longitude/latitude intersection within the Ryde Municipality: has a Ryde Labor Council made financial provision?

Hunters Hill Guest Column Romantics Art Exhibition for lovers of traditional art

QUALITY, traditional paintings by top Australian artists Werner Filipich, James Hough, Ian Hansen, Max Mannix and Ramon WardThompson will be on exhibit at the Hunters Hill Town Hall during this weekend September 7-8.

On exhibit will be Australian landscapes, scenes from life in the outback, wildlife, marine art and cityscapes of Sydney Paris and London.

It was a shared love of fine traditional paintings and the works of the old master painters that brought these five artists together over 30 years ago.

Now after long and successful careers as professional artists they come together once a year at Hunters Hill to not only exhibit their work and promote the joys of traditional art but also to support and promote awareness of the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a nonprofit organisation that supports cancer sufferers and those who care for them.

This will be their tenth exhibition at the Hunters Hill Town Hall

Like so many people around the world he was saddened to see Notre Dame Cathedral in flames on the night of April 15.

Ramon travels to Paris each year to spend time sketching and gathering new subjects for his paintings and Notre Dame Cathedral and the Ile-de-la-Cite on which it stands has long been the inspiration for so many of his paintings.

When he returned to Paris in May of this year and saw for himself the devastation of the beautiful old cathedral he was determined to

keep the essence of Notre Dame alive in his paintings - even in such a sad state the dignity and history of this magnificent building could not be ignored. * * * RAMON’S paintings of Notre Dame can be seen at the annual Romantics Exhibition.

He joins his fellow artists in producing a fine exhibition of traditional paintings held in the Hunters Hill Town Hall, which is located at 22 Alexandra Street Hunters Hill.

Exhibition hours are Friday September 6 from 5pm; Saturday September 7 from 10am to 5pm and Sunday September 8 from 10am to 4pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to view some great artwork, meet the artists and help a very worthwhile charity.

Riverglade Reserve Plan of Management

HUNTERS HILL Council is working with Eco Logical Australia to update the Plan of Management for Riverglade Reserve.

This Plan of Management will provide guidelines and actions for future management and maintenance of the reserve.

To help develop the Plan, Council is seeking community input.

WE ARE creating Seasonal flags to be displayed around the Local Government Area when there are no event-specific flags required.

HMAS Parramatta Exhibition at Heritage Information Centre AN EXHIBITION that pays tribute to the City of Parramatta’s namesake Royal Australian Navy warship – HMAS Parramatta – is being held in Parramatta this month.

The exhibition is open from 9am until 5pm from Monday September 2 until Sunday September 15 in the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre at 346A Church Street and pays tribute to the ship’s association with the city.

HMAS Parramatta is the oldest ship name in the Australian Navy and is the fourth RAN ship to bear the name.

The first HMAS Parramatta was the first ship commissioned into the Commonwealth Naval Forces (later to be named the Royal Australian Navy) on September 10, 1910.

This warship served in World War II and was sunk by a German submarine in the Mediterranean on November 27, 1941 with the loss of 138 lives.

HMAS Parramatta was a River Class Destroyer Escort that served between 1961 and 1991.

Today’s HMAS Parramatta is the fifth of eight Anzac class frigates built for the Royal Australian Navy.

The HMAS Parramatta badge design was derived from the Parramatta City Council Seal in 1939.

The badge of Parramatta (I) (1916-1928) was a stark Kangaroo.

The Aboriginal, with spear in hand, standing in shallow water was utilised with the addition of an impaled and entwined eel on the end of the spear.

The addition of the Parramatta Eel was to link the badge design with the ship’s name.

The aboriginal translation of “Parramatta” means “the place where the eels lie down”.

The warship’s motto “Strike Deep” was suggested by one of the stand-by crews of Parramatta (III) in 1960.

The motto was thought to be appropriate in linking the badge design and Parramatta’s naval role.

It was officially adopted 13 June 1961.

The warship h is a long-range frigate capable of air defence, surface and undersea warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction.

Her combat capabilities have

been significantly improved under the Anti-Ship Missile Defence upgrade program, a world class program that provides an enhanced sensor and weapons systems capability.

This upgrade showcases Australian design and integration capability, with new Phased Array Radar technology designed by CEA Technologies in Canberra, upgrades to combat systems performed by Saab Systems in South Australia, and platform integration design by BAE Systems in Victoria.

HMAS Parramatta is also fitted with an advanced package of air and surface surveillance radars; omni-directional hull mounted sonar and electronic support systems that interface with the state-of-theart 9LV453 Mk3E combat data system.

The warship can counter simultaneous threats from aircraft, surface vessels and submarines.

Her main armament comprises one Mark 45 capable of firing 20 rounds per minute, ship launched Mark 46 torpedoes and a Mark 41 vertical launch system for the Evolved Sea Sparrow missile.

It also has eight anti-ship/land attach canister launched harpoon missiles and a vertical launch system for the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile.

Other defence systems include the Nulka active missile decoy system, offboard chaff and a torpedo countermeasures system.

Like her sister frigates Anzac, Arunta, Ballarat, Perth, Stuart, Toowoomba and Warramunga , she features a “combined diesel or gas” propulsion plant which enables the ship to sustain sprint speeds of greater than 27 knots and allows an operational range in excess of 6,000 nautical miles at 18 knots.

The warship can embark Navy’s latest multi-role Sikorsky/Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk helicopter which has enhanced anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare and Search and Rescue capabilities.

Embarkation of a helicopter also provides the ship with the capability to deliver air-launched missiles and torpedoes. ******

Mayor to honour warship’s crew

THE MAYOR of Parramatta has granted Freedom of Entry to the City to the crew of HMAS Parramatta.

The crew will parade through Parramatta down Church Street to Parramatta Town Hall, Centenary Square.on Saturday, September 14 where they will meet Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson who will present them with the honour.

“The HMAS Parramatta Freedom of Entry parade is a wonderful opportunity for the community to honour the men and women of the Royal Australian Navy for their service,” Lord Mayor Wilson said.

“We previously granted the Freedom of Entry to the crew of HMAS Parramatta back in 2013, and I look forward to welcoming the ship’s officers and sailors to our City once again.

“I invite everyone – locals and visitors, young and old – to come and experience this incredible tradition firsthand.”

The Commanding Officer of HMAS Parramatta Commander Troy Van Tienhoven said the Freedom of Entry marches are a longstanding tradition, which allow the crew of a warship to enter its home city with swords drawn, colours flying and drums beating.

“Parramatta is the fourth ship to carry the name, and her history and association with the City dates back over a century to the establishment of the Royal Australian Navy,” he said.

“This is the first time HMAS Parramatta will exercise her Freedom of Entry since 2013 and comes in the middle of a busy period as we prepare to deploy.

“A number of our crew live within the Parramatta district and they are looking forward to parading in front of their family and friends, and reaffirming

our relationship with the local community.”

Along the route, near Lennox Bridge, the parade will be halted and a senior police representative will challenge the Navy’s right to enter.

The Navy will then present its Freedom of Entry scroll before the unit is permitted to pass and continue on its way.

The granting of Freedom of Entry is the highest accolade a town or city can bestow upon a group of service men and women, and it considered just as much of an honour today as it was centuries ago.

In other military matters, * the NSW Lancers Memorial Museum will also be open on September 14 from 10am to 4pm, in honour of this special event.

Heritage home divides Denistone

A FAMILY HOME in Denistone has divided the community in one of the most bitter disputes to come before the City of Ryde Council in decades.

The council recently put an interim heritage order on the historic Chen Yang family home at 68 Denistone Road when it was revealed the family had started demolition work with an eventual eye to developing a residential apartment block on the site.

The dispute is before the courts but emotive speakers for and against the interim heritage order made their feelings known at last Tuesday night’s council meeting.

On one side are many self funded retirees who have lived in Denistone for most of their lives and want to see the beautiful inter war era home saved.

They are being opposed by a faction strongly represented by recent migrants who are pro-development.

Ron McKeown lives next door at Number 66.

“We have lived here for well over half a century and this home next door is a beautiful home, it is a landmark and should be protected,” he told the council meeting.

“I have seen many historic homes destroyed and this council needs to take action before the character of this area is

lost forever.

“This one home makes an important contribution and I congratulate this council for taking a stand against profit led destruction.”

Long term local resident John Court agreed and welcomes a report from Ryde’s heritage consultant which supports the council action to protect the home.

“I have seen Denistone develop over seven decades and the heritage value (of this home) has been established beyond doubt,” he said.

“But damage is intensifying and with bland uniformity Denistone’s character will be gone.

“Number 68 Denistone Road can be lived in by the owner, who wants to replace it with bland boxes.”

The City of Ryde’s motto as a place of “lifestyle and opportunity” has attracted many cashed up migrants who want to take the opportunity to build apartments that reflect a modern lifestyle.

Fiona Chisholm spoke on behalf of the Chen Yang family.

“English is not their first language and suddenly they come here and are being shown the

door,” she said.

“If council goes ahead these two people will be bankrupt and it is all very well to say tough luck but these two people are not property developers.

“We have here the lives of two people who have come to this country and have been told to bugger off.”

Hai Yan argued that building apartments at 68 Denistone Road is in the community interest, regardless of the retired neighbours’ objections.

“I know two of these senior residents and I assure them this is not what they describe,” she said.

“The current owner is a couple and it is not good use of the land in a country that is growing, so please allow this couple to sub divide the land so that other couples can move in.”

In contrast, local resident Nathan Apps said he was looking to the future when he argued that while he has fond memories of this home, future generations will not if it is demolished.

William Lloyd is also adamant that this historic home must not be destroyed.

“No one is entitled to murder their mother and profit from her Will,” he said.

“If this council does not list this as heritage it will become a laughing stock because we will take up a petition asking the community what it thinks and all the tears about bankruptcy will not conceal the unauthorised work that has been done here.”

An expert opinion came from Patricia Lloyd.

“My day to day job is the restoration of property and in my experience I would have no difficulty, whatsoever, restoring this property.”

“It can be done and heritage listing is definitely not a disadvantage to home owners, as we can see in Hunters Hill.”

Councillors did not debate the issue on the advice of Legal Counsel Paul Kapetas who told councillors the matter is currently before the courts.

“There are one set of legal proceedings on the 17th of October and then there is the interim heritage order, which is subject to injunction proceedings,” he said.

It is only a question of time before a Hunters Hill student is hit by a car, parents warn

ANXIOUS parents have called for a footpath to be urgently built on Reiby Road outside Hunters Hill School.

An emergency meeting of the school’s P&C was held in a school hall on Monday night where attending Hunters Hill councillors heard chilling details of how hundreds of students risk their lives on the road each day because the existing footpaths are too narrow.

There is a small footpath of the eastern side of the road and while some students use a pathway on the western side of the road known as “the goat track” many dodge oncoming cars to walk on the road.

“We have children rushing across the road to avoid being hit and as a driver it is very unnerving, you put your heart in your throat,” School P&C campaigner Jacqueline Crompton told the meeting.

“We are lucky that no child has been hit by a car but it is only a question of time before his happens,” The school has around 800 students and an estimated 60 per cent of them walk on Reiby Road from a bus stop near the Hunters Hill Hotel.

Their parents now demand a footpath of at least a metre and a half be built

by Hunters Hill Council as soon as possible, preferably to replace the goat track.

They also want it to extend from the Hunters Hill overpass down Reiby Road to The Avenue with a pedestrian refuge of a ze-

bra crossing erected near the school gates.

“We have huge numbers of students who cannot fit on the little goat track and we constantly have students walking to and from school in big packs and these packs of students constantly spill onto the road,” Ms Crompton said.

“We want a safe, accessible and connected footpath .. our parents demand this happens and happens very, very quickly,” Hunters Hill Council recently engaged a traffic expert to submit options for a solution in a document known as the Headway Consultants Report but parents fear councillors will vote for the cheapest option in the report, possibly put to them as a staff recommendation.

“Anything less than this Council spending as much money as it takes to build this footpath would not be acceptable,” a parent said.

A specific parental fear is that the Council will attempt to calm traffic by narrowing the road with increased on street parking.

Ms Crompton argues that this will increase the risk to students who will have to dart onto to road – unseen by drivers – between the additional parked cars.

“Errors of judgement like this undermine confidence in this Council,” she said.

Angry parents also blasted the Council for deliberating on the issue for months while giving priority

to other road works.

They argue that there can be no more important priority than the safety of hundreds of children.

“The local primary school has a pedestrian crossing as well as a lollypop man but the high school has nothing,” the parent of a child seriously injured in a fall on the goat track said.

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett stressed that child safety is his top priority.

“I was hit by a car and spent weeks in a children’s hospital, so I do understand your genuine concern,” he said.

“Safety in our municipality is very big on the agenda.”

He said the consultant’s report and the parental concerns will be presented to both Council staff and the Council traffic committee later this month and they will submit their findings to councillors.

The P&C believes that councillors can only make one feasible, reasonable and equitable decision.

“There is no other school in the municipality with a pathway that looks like this, this is inequitable and this inequity has to be addressed by this council,” Ms Crompton said.

One parent said that the greatest risk of a child fatality was not due to large groups of students on Reiby Road, but unsighted individual students running onto the road.

The City of Ryde has become the first Council to commit to a Zero Litter to River target, highlighting once again how committed this Council is to reducing waste and protecting our local environment.

Each year, at least eight million tonnes of plastic flow into the ocean including from rivers, which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. As much as 80% of this plastic pollution comes from land-based sources flowing through drains and into local waterways and oceans via stormwater runoff.

The adoption of the Zero Litter to River target means Council will install new stormwater infrastructure, modify existing assets and advocate for stronger regulation as we strive for zero discharge of gross pollutants into local waterways by 2030.

Taking a stand against domestic violence It is a tragic fact that many people will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime.

At the City of Ryde we believe it is our role to not only highlight the impacts of domestic violence but also provide appropriate support where possible to assist victims.

It is for this reason that we will be putting forward a motion at the upcoming Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Conference for LGNSW to lobby the State Government to follow the City of Ryde’s lead and

include a 10 day domestic violence leave provision in Local Government Awards.

In addition, the City of Ryde will stage a White Ribbon March later in the year to help raise awareness in the community about domestic violence and what can be done to prevent it occurring.

If pelvic floor and abdominals are weak or any leaking occurs while exercising, taking a step to lighten the exercise is important.

It may take three to six months for these muscles to strengthen and get to their optimal function.

Remember, it took nine months for your body to change, allow it time to recover.

Here are three reasons why is it important to start exercising after having a baby: 1. It Improves your mood: As a new mum, you are providing and nurturing day and night for a tiny human being, and your hormones flooding your body will inevitably make you emotional.

Exercise is a proven way to reduce stress.

Start early with a walk every day. The guidelines are 150 minutes/ week of moderate ex-

ercise, which means 30 minutes most days.

Even better if you exercise with a friend.

2. It speeds up your recovery: Healing from a Caesarian section or a perineum tear takes a minimum of six weeks.

Your body needs time before you increase the load on your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.

While abdominal crunches or high impact exercises may need to wait, doing your light walks, adding narrow squats, stairs, calf raises, light weights help improve blood flow to your muscle groups enhancing the healing process.

3. It improves your energy levels: If you are active, you increase your capacity levels, which means that your day to day demands don’t feel so tiring.

Allow ten minutes of simple exercises when your baby is happy and doing his tummy time.

A little often will pay off!

Parliament recognises Pamela Alvarez’s great contribution to Hunters Hill 22 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 4 September, 2019

LANE COVE MP Anthony Roberts has paid tribute to the contribution Pamela Alvarez has made to the Hunters Hill community.

Mr Roberts tribute was recently made in NSW Parliament where he praised her work as a solicitor and as a local community legend.

“It is a pleasure to draw attention to one of our most excellent citizens, Pamela Alvarez,” Mr Roberts told NSW Parliament.

“It is said age appears best in four things .. old wood is best to burn, old wine is best to drink, old authors to read and old friends to trust.

“And that is what Pamela is to the many people of Lane Cove.

“With much wisdom and a warm heart, Pamela can always be trusted upon, from new mothers to those traversing the legal system and everyone in between.

“Pamela is also the kind word we have needed when we are down as well as the hand up we have required when it is time to move forward.”

Mr Roberts spoke of her contribution to regional communities.

“As per usual for Pamela, she dove

headfirst into the community.

“She became the Secretary of the Country Women’s Association.

“She managed to encourage a ballet teacher to teach in the town as well as instigated craft days for children and assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh award.

“Pamela organised a Wool Promotion Day for which Gloucester was awarded the CWA State first prize.”

Mr Roberts said her life has been a life well lived.

“Pamela has had an extraordinary life, with her fair share of joy and tragedy.

“Shortly after getting married in Brisbane, Pamela and her new husband Gavin settled into Hunters Hill where Gavin was born.

“Their children Christina and John were also born in Hunters Hill.

“They then decided to move to Gloucester where they bought a property to raise beef cattle.”

Mr Roberts said her life includes saving the life of a child.

“She promoted children’s swimming lessons, having saved a child from a well for which she was given a Bravery Award.”

Her husand Gavin passed away in 1976.

“Upon the tragic and premature death of her husband Pamela returned to Hunters Hill with two young children,” Mr Roberts revealed.

“With a steely determination she has so often shown, Pamela reorganised her children’s lives, did a refresher course for Nursing and returned to full-time work.”

Her legal career was also praised.

“To further provide for her family, she began and completed a Law degree at Macquarie University around her full-time job.

“Having completed her law degree, Pamela quickly rose through the ranks, being admitted as a solicitor in 1989.

“She then spent a decade as a Prosecution lawyer in the Office of Director of Public

Prosecutions.

“She became a Member of the International Commission of Jurists and was a Rapporteur on an Aboriginal Justice Mission to Bourke and Brewarrina.”

The Hon Justice Michael Kirby described Pamela Alvarez as “a lawyer with a conscience” with a concern about her community and the wider world.

“Taking the opportunity to care for her grandson as her daughter went back to work, Pamela saw it as an opportunity to get more involved in her great passion, Hunters Hill,” Mr Roberts noted.

“She commenced a Grannies Group under the auspice of the Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill.

“The Grannies Group involved a group of grandparents who would take their grandkids on trips to the Opera House, visits to parks, zoos, pools and unique entertainment like The Wiggles.

“From the grannies group came the start of a playgroup at Saint

“Over 370 local families have fond memories, playing and sharing moments under the compassionate co-ordination of Pamela and a great team of volun-

teers.

“She also served on the Hunters Hill Playground Committee, the Community Services Advisory Committee and remains the sole surviving trustee of the Hunters Hill Theatre.”

The Lane Cove MP said her contribution continues.

“With limitless amounts of energy and enthusiasm, Pamela continues to be a bedrock of our local community.”

Golf day fetches $24,000 for Black Dog Institute

NORTH Ryde Golf Club recently hosted the 3rd annual Donald Duck Cup Charity Golf Day which featured former rugby league Kangaroos hooker and Test captain George Peponis, premiership-winning Manly rake Matt Ballin and Australian golfing legend Craig Parry.

The event proved a huge success, raising $24,000 for the Black Dog Institute which is dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness.

Some 144 golfers participated in the ambrose event which also included driving, chipping and putting competitions At the conclusion of golf there was plenty of entertainment with a lunch hosted by Putney personality Ron Ryan.

Patrons enjoyed live music from the talented Ray Nosti, a silent auction and live auction which saw some impressive memorabilia go under the hammer.

The Donald Duck Cup committee consisting of Jack Stewart, David McKay Luke Neiberding, Liam Liston and Michael

Quinane would like to thank everyone who made the day possible including all players, sponsors, volunteers and the North Ryde Golf Club.

Since the event’s incep-

tion in 2017, the committee have helped raise $53,000 for the Black Dog Institute.

Telopea man drug charge THE DEADLY street drug Methylamphetamine – also known as Ice – was allegedly found on a suspect in Hunters Hill last Saturday.

Police allege the 49 year old Telopea man was carrying the drug when he was searched in Joubert Street around 9.30pm.

The search was prompted by suspicions the man was under the influence of a drug and found what is described as a plastic container which contained a white crystalline powder.

He was arrested and taken to Ryde Police Station where he was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for Possess Prohibited Drug.

He will appear in Parramatta Local Court on September 12. *** A MAN who urinated on a wall after leaving Ryde Police Station has been charged with multiple offences.

Police allege the 34 year old Ermington man was detained in the early hours of Tuesday morning after he failed a breath test near the Devlin Street off ramp at the intersection of Victoria Road.

Two B or not two B, that is the question West Ryde business owners are asking

WEST RYDE business owners have called for the City of Ryde to negotiate with Coles to give them long stay parking on the two B lower floor of the shopping centre car park.

The business owners want the 172 spot parking level to be used by their employees, some of whom walk several blocks to work because of a shortage of on-street parking in West Ryde’s commercial precinct.

West Ryde Hotel Manager Jackie Kralt told last Tuesday night’s City of Ryde Council meeting she supports the option.

“The parking around West Ryde is shocking,” she said.

“Staff have to park some distance from their workplace and having dedicated parking for my 25 staff would be wonderful, especially as

the lower level car park is practically empty.”

West Ryde Chamber of Commerce President Nora Etmekdjian also stressed that the lower level car park is “under utilised” and knows that people who work in West Ryde, shop in West Ryde.

Meadowbank West Ryde Progress Association spokesman Rob Senior said businesses and staff he has surveyed overwhelmingly support the car park option.

“There are 404 businesses and more than 300 expressed a strong interest in parking on this level,” he said.

“It would be a shift to a greater good for a greater number.”

Another supporting statement came from Phil Brown, a West Ryde Neighbourhood Watch member.

“We know about the under utilisation of the car park,” he said.

“It has also been observed that staff park in residential streets when this 172 spot car park is empty and at a time when, I am sorry to say, that stealing from vehicles in this residential area is on the increase.”

Councillors and staff are expected to hold discussions with Coles.

Hunters Hill Tennis Club set to host 2019 NSW Grasscourt Tennis Championships

HISTORIC Hunters Hill Lawn Tennis Club will host the NSW Grasscourt National Qualifying Championships for Under 12 Girls and Boys on Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15.

The proud club – which has been established for 130 years – is one of the few remaining grass court centres in the Sydney metropolitan area. (bold) Hunters Hill Tennis are the longest continuous running sporting club in the district followed by Hunters Hill Rugby Club that was founded in 1892.

Club stalwart Judy Smith said Hunters Hill

Tennis officials will host the prestigious event in association with Tennis NSW. “It is a wonderful honour to have some of the country’s best juniors test their tennis skills on our well maintained lawn courts,” said Judy, a life member who started playing as a Sunday morning junior during the 1970s.

Both events are Singles only and the winners will

play off in the Australian Grasscourt National Under 12 Championships to be staged in Perth.

There will be 16 players in each draw and each match will be the best of two tiebreak sets, with a match tiebreak played, should it be tied at one set all.

Saturday and Sunday matches will start at 10am. At this stage it is anticipated that the semi

finals and finals only of both the Girls and Boys event will be held on Sunday (subject to there being any unfinished matches carried over from Saturday).

Classy Hawks primed for Sydney Shield finals

DASHING centre Josh Rizk underlined his value as premiership contenders Ryde Eastwood tuned up for the NSWRL Sydney Shield finals series with a resounding 32-22 victory over Wentworthville Magpies last Sunday at T.G Millner Field.

The gun colt produced a classy attacking performance as the high flying Hawks toppled the seventh placed Magpies to wrap up fourth spot at the end of the preliminary rounds on 32 points.

Rizk nabbed two tries and booted four goals to cap a strong display as the Hawks sounded an ominous warning to their rivals that they are right in the title mix.

Ryde Eastwood square off with minor premiers Cabramatta this Saturday in a qualifying final at St Marys Leagues Stadium at 3pm.

The Hawks are chasing a ninth consecutive triumph with the much fancied Cabramatta outfit one of the team’s major scalps during the past two months.

Another victory over the Two Blues will give the Hawks a weekend off and propel them into a Grand Final qualifier at Kogarah Jubilee Oval on September 21 or 22.

Coach Walt Wilson will be looking for a stronger start by his charges after Wentworthville caught their traditional rivals napping to jump to an 8-0 lead after ten min-

utes following tries by winger Rameses Tuipulotu and lock Muli Lasalo.

The elusive Rizk sparked the Hawks into action when he sliced through to register the home team’s opening try in the 15th minute.

He grabbed a second try after dynamic hooker Tristan Evans-Tsoi crossed in the 23rd minute followed by a converted try by winger Kirk Patton to establish a 20-8 lead at the half time break.

The Hawks pounced after the interval when half back Mitchell Gray fooled the defence to score and give his side a 24-8 lead before Magpies utility Tyrone Shelley bridged the gap after crashing over for a determined four pointer.

Ryde Eastwood’s talented centre Bradley Cincotta notched his team’s sixth try when he busted through tackles to set up a handy 30-12 lead.

The Magpies gained some respectability when Tuipulotu and centre Siaosi Susifa crosed for late tries before Rizk potted a 79th minute penalty goal.

MEANWHILE Redfern All Blacks clinched the NSWRL Womens Open Age Eastern Conference

premiership after a hard fought 20-14 Grand Final victory over Ryde Eastwood last Sunday at Redfern Oval.

The strong-finishing Hawkettes turned in a courageous effort against the mighty Redfern side with barnstorming forward Bridie Hill producing a best on ground performance to earn the Player of the Match award.

A revved up Bridie proved inspirational to the Hawkettes, who trailed 16-4 and 20-8 at various stages before creating a vital try to put her side back into title calculations.

Other players to impress were hooker forward Agnes Dean, fullback Jessie Post, half back Courtney Milone and tricky winger Tamika McCabe.

It was a phenomenal effort by the Ryde Eastwood women to reach a Grand Final after losing a glut of talent and strike power at the end of last season.

Hockey trump cards Craig and Brand to spearhead Kookaburras in Oceania Cup

RYDE-Hunters Hill hockey internationals Tom Craig and Tim Brand have earned selection in the Australian Kookaburras team that will attempt to achieve qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at this week’s Oceania Cup series.

The dynamic Panthers’ duo were named in the 18-player team - finalised by Kookaburras Head Coach Colin Batch for the tournament to be held in Rockhampton, Queensland from Thursday September 5 to Sunday September 8.

The Oceania Cup comprises a best-ofthree match series against New Zealand for both the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos, and doubles as the qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.

Nine of the 18 players selected by Batch have made over 100 Kookaburras appearances, while the least experienced member of the

“We have got a very good squad with a lot of depth and we’ve used that throughout the Pro League, so in this instance we have picked a team to win the Oceania Cup.” But while there are always players who miss out, Batch agrees a large element of the

Kookaburras’ achievements have been built around a unified team first mentality.

“I actually reminded the players about that point yesterday…that one of the fundamentals of the success we have enjoyed over the last three years is that it has been a united front and those players not selected have always been very supportive of those that have,” said Batch.

“So while understanding there will always be some individual disappointments, there is certainly the perspective among the whole group of having the bigger picture in mind.”

The Kookaburras

have been gradually building towards what Batch categorically states as the team’s most important matches of the year, and he is confident they will be as best prepared as they can be for the opening match.

24 year old Craig has notched 26 goals to date in 94 matches for tbe Kookaburras while Brand, 20, has scored 13 goals in 31 appearances for Australia.

The Kookaburras meet New Zealand on Thursday September 5 at the Kalka Shades Hockey Fields, Rockhampton at 4pm before squaring off against the Kiwis this Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 6.15pm.
