Choosing the right cemetery
Knowing about the many burial and cremation options available makes it easier when selecting the proper memorial site.
Choosing a cemetery often comes during a time of immense sadness. Understanding in advance how it all works can help to decide on the most suited and preferred memorial arrangements, as well as avoid any unexpected additional costs that may come with hasty decisions.
Location
It’s important to consider both the right geographical location and specific memorial position within the cemetery.
Choosing a location someone shared a connection with can be comforting and it helps if the site is easily accessible for visiting loved ones.
The particular memorial place may align with religious beliefs or may be an appropriate reflective environment for family and friends.
Pre-need and At-need
Pre-need simply means funeral arrangements are
made in advance of someone passing.
These plans tend to cost less because everything is organised and paid in advance.
At-need arrangements involve organising a funeral soon after someone dies which incurs current costs.
Burial and Cremation
Some cemeteries include both burial sites and cremation plots. Burial sites are usually situated on an open lawn or among monumental areas.
Cremation plots tend to be more concentrated in a memorial wall or garden.
Other options can include crypts, vaults, legacy trees and natural burials.
Single or family plot
Having a family plot allows relatives to be buried together or have their ashes placed in the same location.
This pre-planned option can provide peace of mind particularly for those want-

Interment (burial) rights
An interment right provides the holder with an interest in the land but does not give ownership of the land.
Some interment rights are offered in perpetuity, others as renewable arrangements every 25 or 99 years.
Ongoing costs
Knowing the ongoing financial commitment for any selected site is important.
It is a good idea to enquire if the cemetery provides all services with a secure guarantee of no hidden costs, and also check if a management or any annual fees are required.

Whether we ‘Netflix and Chill’ to decompress at the end of the day, shed a tear while singing along to Adele in the car, or head to the theatre to see something that will make us laugh, we all need art.
It expands and delights us, consoles and inspires us.
Quite simply: we can’t live without it. For many Australians, myself included, art is more than just something that guides us through life.
It is our life.
I started ALC Creative from my Woolwich apartment in 2021 after lockdowns eliminated creative work opportunities worldwide. ALC Creative is a production company built on equal opportunity to provide a platform for emerging Australian artists across several artistic modes, including theatre, audio arts and film.
I have always had a passion for the performing arts industry and a deep respect for the importance of art, but producing art certainly does not come without challenges.
* * *
My focus for 2023 is drama short film titled Life Beyond Christine, produced in conjunction with Moonlight Motion Pictures.
Life Beyond Christine is about two broken women who connect as they individually work to overcome the trauma that haunts them as a result of the same perpetrator, psychologist Christine Hallaway.
This film sheds light on a few important issues.
It raises mental health awareness by giving a raw depiction of what struggle looks like behind closed doors.
It also makes a statement about the abuse of power from someone we trust, which is something we are learning to recognise more and more as a society.
Ultimately, Life Beyond Christine is a story about hope that demonstrates how connection – opening up to others – can help us heal.
This film aims to be high-quality and high-impact, to be released to film festivals worldwide and, eventually, the general public.
To The POINT
by Alexandra Chambers
I am extremely proud of what we are creating and particularly proud of the passionate group of emerging filmmakers collaborating on this project, including writer and actress Sarah Moon and award-winning director Margaret Thanos.
Short films and ‘co-op’ theatre are perfect learning grounds for emerging artists. * * *
Unfortunately, filmmaking is expensive and funding is limited.
Independent filmmakers don’t have the security or luxury of government funding and often have to fund the project themselves.
Production costs are often excessively high, even for small projects, which creates a certain inaccessibility for emerging artists eager to make their own work.
In making Life Beyond Christine, we are reliant solely on crowdfunding and philanthropy to ensure we have the funds to pay for the bare minimum essentials, with our incredible team working for a nominal fee hinging on funding success.
Here is where we are relying on the generosity of our local community to bring this project to life.
To learn more and support local artists, search ‘Life Beyond Christine’ at https://australianculturalfund.org.au

Back to school
With school now back for the 2023 year, our local roads are once again busy at drop-off and pick-up times around primary and secondary campuses.
This affects the peninsula in particular, as well as other locations such as Mary Street and Earl Street.
Our Council works closely with school principals, through our road safety program and our School Principals Committee, to promote education for road users and pedestrians.
We have been receiving ongoing feedback from our local schools, and will continue to consult with the broader community to help ensure the safety of our students.
At times, you may see Council staff out and about around schools; please be mindful that education and enforcement play a vital role in helping keep children safe, especially early in the yearly school term.
Initiatives to help keep children safe around roads will also feature in the upcoming NSW Government ‘Be Bus Aware’ campaign for Bus Safety Week (20 to 26 February), which aims to raise awareness about how to keep kids safe on and around buses.
The campaign also reminds the community that when lights are flashing on buses, they may be picking up and dropping off children.
Free kids’ story sessions
Baby Bounce has returned to library and community space The YARN, on Fridays at 11am, now that the school term has resumed.
The free sessions are designed to engage youngsters aged 0 to 3 years in stories, songs and rhymes.
Parents and carers are welcome to drop
in with their little ones on the day - bookings are not required.
The YARN also hosts free Story Time sessions, aimed at preschool-aged children, every Wednesday from 11am.
The YARN is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. So, bring a friend and come and enjoy some quiet reading time or use the workspaces and free Wi-Fi.
Cooling playgrounds
We have some incredible outdoor spaces and playgrounds in Hunters Hill and recent works have added some new shade structures in time to deal with the summer heat.
Shade sails were replaced at Weil Park in Woolwich, while preparatory works are well under way to install a new shade sail at Harding Memorial Playground in Gladesville.
The shade is being added in response to public feedback expressed during previous community consultation and is part of our ongoing upgrades to local playspaces.

Bumper crowd at Ryde’s Lunar New Year celebration
A BUMPER crowd attended City of Ryde’s Lunar New Year celebration at Eastwood Oval on Saturday.
Politicians and real estate agents alike, were out in force, with the sun gods turning it on to ensure a large crowd of families and locals enjoyed the evening’s entertainment, food and drink stalls, amusements and carnival rides.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the spectacular high pole lion dancing.
The other was seeing Ryde councillor Trenton Brown ditch the blue tie for a traditional Korean costume, a gesture that observers say, went down a treat.
Ryde councillor Justin Li - who was the founding chairperson of City of Ryde’s Lunar New Year Celebration Committee and led it for four years
between 2009 and 2012 - said the weekend’s events were a fitting way to celebrate the pandemic being put behind us.
”After having the last two years impacted by Covid, it was great to see a record number of attendees at Eastwood Oval on Saturday, including the NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet,” Clr Li told The Weekly Times.
”Everybody had a fun time. Congratulations particularly to the new co-chairs Anthony Tang and Clr Trenton Brown and the Council events team who have taken the lunar new year event to new heights.”

The importance of dancing on the ageing body
Whether it be a preventative intervention or a form of rehabilitation, there are boundless benefits of dance on the ageing body.
Gwen Korebrits, CEO of the Dance Health Alliance, says dance is a transformative and powerful activity which combines physical movement with the emotional connection of a shared, social experience.
“Not only does dance improve general levels of health such as flexibility, muscular and strength, it activates important areas of the brain which aid long-term cognitive function,” she said.
”Dancing helps promote new brain synapse connections and cognitive reserve, which helps slow the rate of brain deterioration.
”This has proven to be extremely beneficial for individuals experiencing cognitive disorders such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Gwen said dance was key to helping the brain release memories and unlocking our desire to move.
“The combination of music and movement inspires out younger self to make an appearance,” Gwen said.
”I love that the Dance Health Alliance’s DanceMoves programme doesn’t require any dance experience - it’s a fun and safe way to maintain physical, mental and social health!”
As we age, it can be easy to lose confidence in our changing bodies.
☐ Dance Health Alliance
CEO Gwen Korebrits
Falling is one of the most feared aspects of ageing.
Human balance depends on our ability to control the movement of our bodies - abilities which decline as we age, increasing susceptibility to falling.
“The great news is the Dance Health Alliance’s classes can significantly help reduce the risk of fall, through improved focus, leg sensation, lower limb strength, reaction time and postural stability,” Gwen said.
”Increased confidence not only helps reduce the risk falls, but also helps improve many other areas of life such as the skills and confidence
needed to drive, or the ability to keep up with young grandkids!
”This in turn helps improve one’s overall independence and quality of life!”

“It is great that the Liberal and Nationals in Government are able to deliver such amazing schools that will support the students for generations to come.
“The word Ngarala, which is derived from the local Dharug language word meaning ‘learning together’, I believe reflects the values of our community and provides a strong connection to the Wallumedegal people of the Eora nation.”
Mr Lane, also a councillor at the City of Ryde, said the electorate was benefiting from “the single greatest investment in education in its history.”
“To open yet another local school at Ngarala is a huge privilege, and if elected, I will be fighting to deliver yet another two in Melrose and Macquarie Parks,” he told The Weekly Times.
“My vision, as Liberal candidate for Ryde, is all about ensuring an even brighter future for local schools and education” Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she was proud the Liberals and Nationals in Government have delivered the amazing new school for the community.

”We have a an incredible society and this is my fifth Lunar New Year event that I’ve been to across three states over the past 14 days,” the Prime Minister said in Eastwood Mall.
”Here in Eastwood, we see a community that has benefited from the diversity that is here.
”And earlier, we met and had lunch with leaders of the Australian-Chinese, Australian-Korean and other communities who’ve
made this part of Sydney their home, who have come and are contributing to the national economy so that they can give their kids a better opportunity in life.
”That’s a great story of Australia. And that’s the story I want to see enriched into the future.”
Addressing members of the national press, broadcast media and of course, your representative from The Weekly Times, Mr Albanese gave Ms Howison a ringing endorsement. ”I’m very pleased to be here today to endorse Lyndal Howison and I’ve known Lyndal for 15 years,” he said.
Independent for the state electorate of Lane Cove - Victoria Davidsonlaunched her campaign at the Glasdesville RSL Club on Saturday.
More than 200 supporters attended the launch where she promised to be committed to political independence, democracy and community values.
“We must fight for integrity in the political process,“ she told supporters.
”Transparent decision-making and accountability must be at the centre of our system.”
The independent candidate is a lawyer and mediator who lives in Lane Cove and is married with three children.
She needs a swing of around 14 percent to defeat Liberal Anthony Roberts MP and possibly preferences from Labor candidate, Penny Pedersen.
“We can have a strong economy, a sensible transition to sustainable energy, development which enhances our community and a better environment without kowtowing to lobby groups or vested interests,’’ she said.
“I have the energy, the commitment and the drive to deliver for the people in our electorate.”
”She is a dynamo. She’s someone who’s absolutely committed to making a difference in this electorate.
”Lyndal is someone who retrained to become a high school teacher because she’s absolutely committed to education being the key ingredient in creating opportunity, in making sure that a community like this, a multicultural dynamic community, can see its youngest Australians have the best opportunity in life.”
Mr Albanese said that could be achieved by electing Ms Howison as the Member for Ryde as part of a Minns Labor Government.

Ryde Real Estate joins McGrath Ryde
McGrath Ryde has more exciting news to announce following the team’s recent consolidation and move into its highly-anticipated, primely-positioned headquarters at 128 Blaxland Road, Ryde.
The McGrath Ryde team has once again expanded its footprint in the local real estate industry, with their merger and acquisition of wonderful local real estate practice, RYDE REAL ESTATE, in Putney.
“After three generations in the industry trading as Ryde Real Estate, with client relationships spanning many decades, it is with great pride that Ryde Real Estate’s legacy will continue with the exciting expansion of McGrath Ryde and an incredible team of more than 30 agents,” McGrath Ryde principal Robert Bagala told The Weekly Times.
Boasting a rich and productive history, Ryde Real Estate’s story began with Mario Boccalatte opening its doors in 1960 after making the move from his sugar cane farm in Babinda, Far North Queensland, with his wife and daughter Margaret in tow.
Ryde Real Estate was then located in Church Street, Ryde and Mario made many friends, servicing countless immigrant families coming to settle in Australia.
When Mario retired, daughter Margaret Lombardo took over the family business, emerging as one of the few women in real estate at the time.
Fast forward to 1978 when their son Eric joined the family business, and of course his wife Debrah
thereafter in 1985, to continue the family business as Ryde Real Estate.
In 1996 they relocated to their new office on the corner of Morrison Road and Charles Street in Putney where Margaret continued working into her seventies to retire in 2002. Debrah and Eric carefully selected the McGrath Ryde practice as they recognised its role in the local property market as one of the biggest real estate practices with a formidable reputation for its collection of highly reputable agents.
“We see local principals Robert Bagala and George Agostino as being aligned with a philosophy of personalised service with premium results,” says Debrah Lombardo.
“We made our decision with absolute confidence that McGrath Ryde will continue to run the operation like a family business with a personal service to our loyal and longstanding clients.”
Robert Bagala added that it was with great pride that Ryde Real Estate’s legacy could be continued as part of McGrath Ryde, “aligning with the calibre of industry professional that our incredible team proudly boasts.”
The team welcome you to visit them in their newly completed office at 128 Blaxland Rd Ryde, or contact any one of the friendly sales or rental team at 9816 3500 anytime.

Federal Police raid homes in epping and Drummoyne
Homes in epping and Drummoyne were raided by federal police on Wednesday night and nine people were arrested as part of a Sydney wide operation that targeted an alleged money laundering syndicate with links to China.
The raids seized $29 million in cryptocurrency, dozens of designer watches, handbags, jewellery and luxury cars worth as well as four firearms.
Police allege the syndicate operated as an “underground
bank” for organised crime and circumvented Australian laws that regulate the transfer of money from China to Australia by using an underground syndicate broker.
The syndicate allegedly charged a 10 per

It is also alleged the syndicate laundered $150 million of its own profits to avoid suspicion..
AFP Assistant Commissioner Kirsty Schofield said the investigation - titled Operation Avarus-Midas - was “one of the largest and most complex money laundering investigations in the AFP’s history”.
“We will allege the money laundering organisation used their profit to live large,” Assistant Commissioner Schofield said.
“They bought highend jewellery, highend watches and some of these watches cost more than what an individual would earn in a lifetime.”
She did not rule out further arrests as part of Operation AvarusMidas and said the police action should send a message to organised crime: “you are on our radar”.

ryde murder trial sensationally postponed
The trial of a Brazilian man accused of murdering ryde businesswoman Cecilia Haddad (38) is expected to be delayed by months after he sensationally sacked his defence team on Wednesday.
Accused killer Mario Marcelo Santoro’s trial in a Rio federal court over the alleged 2018 murder was due to commence this week and NSW detectives had flown to Rio to give evidence.
“We remain committed to the process and this happens in Australia too, so we’ll be there next time,” NSW Police Inspector John Edwards said in the courtroom.
It is alleged forty year old Santoro strangled Cecilia Haddad in the kitchen of her Ryde apartment in April and fled to Brazil hours after her body was spotted by kayakers in the Lane

Detectives launched a murder investigation days later when her abandoned red Fiat car was found at West Ryde railway station.
Santoro was named as a key suspect in the murder and in July, Brazilian police swooped on him at his sister’s Rio apartment.
He has since been held in Rio’s notorious Benfica Prison.
The pair attended university together in Brazil and Cecilia had moved to Australia more than a decade ago, first living in Perth.
In 2016 she relocated to Syd-
ney where she worked in mining and logistics.
The Haddad family said Cecilia had fallen into an emotionally abusive relationship and was fearful of Santoro, who refused to leave her home and stalked her in public.
Her brother Muller Haddad had flown to Rio for the trial and said his sister’s death had “completely devastated” the family.
“We miss her so much,” he said.
If convicted, Santoro faces a 30-year sentence but will serve no time in Australia, as Brazil does not extradite its citizens.

Plenty at stake in A-League Sydney derby
Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Marko Rudan has put Saturday night’s Sydney derby at CommBank Stadium (kick off 7.45pm) into perspective.
“It’s not just another game,” Rudan said.
“It’s a big game for our club.”
A resurgent Sydney FC will be travelling after consecutive wins (a season-first), to face a Wanderers side buoyed by a win over the reigning champions.
The Wanderers sit in second spot on the table and want to stay there, while the Sky Blues - after a 3-2 win over Central Coast Mariners - have finally
penetrated the top six and will want to continue their progression.
It’s been more than two years since both clubs have approached a Sydney Derby off the back of respective wins. And with both sides followed by respectively rowdy active support, this weekend’s match should be a cracker.
Ravens are ready for 2023 NPL season
The 21-year-old grew up in Epping and attended The King’s School and now lives in Willoughby.
He proved unstoppable at last week’s Burnie International, claiming his second career ATP Challenger singles title without dropping a set.
This propels Hijikata up 30 spots to world No.119 and into seventh position in the Australian top 10.
Hijikata claimed the men’s singles title without losing a set, completing his perfect week with a 6-3 6-3 victory against top seed James Duckworth in the final.
This is the 21-year-old’s second career ATP Challenger singles title.
Hijikata, who won the Australian Open men’s doubles title last month in partnership with Jason Kubler, was previously ranked at a career-high world No.149, broke into the top 120 after his performance this week.

david K bred to be a tiger!
By the one eyed t iger
FIGHTING
Twenty eight year old David played his junior footie with the All Saints Toongabbie Tigers Under Ten team and grew up with a Tiger crest on his heart.
Contracted with us until 2026 he is a New South Wales and Australia representative star who only needs to add a grand final winners medal to complete his impressive collection of silverware.
And that’s why he jumped at the opportunity to join the new look Tigers under coach Tiger Tim Sheens and Assistant Coach Benji Marshall.
He joins us in a player swap for Jackson Hastings and the smart word at Concord is that this is an amazing deal for us with David every bit as impressive as Jackson...and that’s very impressive!
With almost 200 NRL games to his
SOCIAL KITCHEN
credit, he comes with a reputation for being one of the most dominant forwards in rugby league, famous for moments of individual brilliance and more than able to cope with a heavy workload.
Our poor opponents will certainly be shaking with fear when they read his stats.
One that impresses me is that he finished in the top ten for the most metres made by a prop in 2022 - averaging 155 metres per game - a feat even more remarkable considering injury restricted him to just 18 games!
With Jimmy Tamou pursuing his career in tropics of north bananaland, David is also the experienced leader of the pack we need and a forward able to make charging runs towards the try line.
He also comes with an unrivalled reputation for being a provider with his razor sharp, inch perfect passes to the backline a key feature of his
game.
My sources at Concord also tell me he’ll be one of our first forwardssince Steve Roach and Paul Sironenable to score from a ‘kick and chase’ try on the last tackle inside the opponents quarter.
Tim brought him into the Australian side in 2014 so there’s already a synergy between them.
Together with Api and Isaiah, he brings a Never Say Die attitude to a side hungry to win a grand final and is another reason why you should bet Ma-In-Law’s Funeral Fund on the Tigers while the odds are still stacked in your favour.
This Thursday the Tigers travel to the Land Of The Long White Cloud for a pre-season challenge game. SEE YA THERE!
