Cancellation of Concord Garden Club’s 66th flower, vegetable and floral art show Concord Garden Club have made the difficult decision to cancel the 66th Autumn flower, vegetable and floral art show which was to be held on Saturday March 21, 10.30am to 4pm and Sunday March 22, 9am to 3pm due to CoronaVirus concerns. Many of our members and exhibitors are older and vulnerable and we decided we could not take the chance of illness striking.

The destruction to birds, to other animals and to the habitats through the recent bushfires has been enormous in eastern and south western Australia.

Natural rehabilitation and repopulation has commenced but it will be a long, slow process.

The Sydney metropolitan area was not badly affected by the fires so there are plenty of birds to be seen. One species is the egret which are beautiful white coloured, long-legged birds seen wading in shallow water. People are continuing to see tawny frogmouth families and there have been recent sightings of Australian Raven (large black bird with white eye and harsh call) which are often mistakenly called “crows”. Blackman Park in Lane Cove West is an area where people see interesting birds. Try the Venteman’s Reach Track and keep a lookout for the bower of Satin Bower bird.

Rainbow Lorikeet are common with their strong colours and loud chattering. For any assistance in identifying birds contact the Club or visit the Facebook Page via the link on the website homepage www.cboc.org.au.

LETTERS to the Editor TWT Green Madness story supported Dear Sir, I’m very interested in your article, “Green Madness” in the March 4 edition.

I have been trying to get council to cut down a gum tree located in a park adjacent to 52 Griffiths Avenue, West Ryde, for over 15 years.

Each time I am being told, it’s size is important to the area.

They then put it on the significant tree register.

The tree is on the property line and each year we get tree limbs falling on our property.

With the recent storms several large limbs fell on the garage, luckily there was minimum damage.

We feel it’s only a matter of time before the whole tree comes down, either on our property or surrounding properties, or the park that is frequented by dozens of people each day.

I have written to council about the recent limbs falling and have not received a reply as yet.

Disappointed with Greta letter Dear Sir, I read with disappointment a letter printed in your paper last week titled “Climate Greetings from Greta”.

The letter sought to poke fun at Greta Thunberg, and her stance on climate.

It was disappointing initially that such a letter was even printed in your paper, noting in the small box entitled “Letters Welcome” the requirement for “full name, address and telephone number” to be supplied.

Noting that the address was “Fairyland, Sweden”, I presume that the TWT did not follow this up, and therefore apply the guidelines of the Australian Press Council?

To the right of this letter was a “To the Point” by Dr Jessica Collins reflecting on International Women’s Day, and her hope that her children, particularly her daughters, might live in a world where they could believe that they could do anything.

It was a great point, and she gave thanks for the women around her – in-

cluding the activists and teachers!

However this important message was deeply diminished by the printing of the above letter which sought to make fun of a girl because of her activism.

This is the exact culture that needs to be changed, and I give thanks for strong women and girls who are making a stand for such a change, and thanks also to the men and boys who support them.

I pray that your paper might take this up and champion them also.

Public release of sports fields use Dear Sir, I note that Richard Copnall (TWT Letters 4/3/20) was a Secretary of Macquarie Dragons Soccer Club.

2. One should never mention inconvenient facts that stand between a soccer organisation and a council splashing out tens of millions like confetti without the risk of being trampled on.

3. At June 2019 there were about 12,500 members of GHFA (a mainly male soccer association that played on Saturdays) and about 3,500 in the equivalent female association (that played on Sundays). Hence the empty soccer fields on Sunday (excluding Christie, M B & MB parks) but refer point 2 above.

4. There is a 30 hour maximum limit on grass field use but across the region there are large numbers of soccer fields that are not used for training and are used for less than 10 hours per week at the peak of the soccer season, but refer point 2 above.

5. Despite a call from a NSROC report that Council general managers publicly release sports field use it doesn’t appear to have occurred, maybe because of point 2 above.

I stand by my prior comments though I am not sure how my back will be after the soccer studs are removed (figuratively, refer point 2 above).

Dear Sir, The Italian Prime Minister and the Palestine Prime Minister deserve to be congratulated for taking the courageous and decisive decision to reduce person to person contact: banning mass gathering and restricting travel is a difficult and often misunderstood but effective decision to make.

Their reduced death toll and speedier recovery will be their reward as well as for their country.

This contrasts with the destiny of Trump’s America; there lie latent time-bombs and no effective action is being taken.

Secret Life of Powerful Owls Dear Sir, On Saturday March 7 at Hornsby Library, Mayor Ruddock, Clr Browne, Clr Heyde and Clr Waddell attended our ‘Secret Life of Powerful Owls’ presentation.

Dr Beth Mott of BirdLife Australia’s Powerful Owl Project and Deb Fleet our local Sydney Wildlife volunteer carer were special guest speakers.

The gold coin donation raised another $155.50 for Sydney Wildlife and hopefully more awareness on the plight of the vulnerable Powerful Owl and its habitat on the urban fringe of our Bushland Shire.

This takes our fundraising total for wildlife organisations (BirdLife Australia, Sydney Wildlife, Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation and Higher Ground Raptors) to over $6,200 through the sale of our ‘Mikey the Powerful Owlet’ books, public speaking and performing.

One might think that Stryder is only about transport, but it is so much more.

It is about people who need transport access - whether it is to that allimportant medical appointment on time or simply visiting the local club in a bus that has been modified to suit the abilities of all passengers.

Stryder was previously known as Ryde Hunters Hill Community Transport. As our new name suggests, we have made “giant strides” in our business over the last 12 months. *** CLIENTS COUNT! Stryder’s clients come from all walks of life, and we are about providing a way for them to remain active and enjoy independent living.

Two popular activities are our weekly shopping trips to Macquarie Centre, Cox’s Road Shops and Gladesville Shopping Village, and our social day trips.

Next week we’ll be going for a scenic drive to Picton for lunch at the historic Razorback Inn; meandering up the coast to the Mingara Recreation Club at Tumbi Umbi; and a picnic in a local park.

We have 15 volunteer drivers, who drove over 33,000kms last year.

As a volunteer driver myself, I find it immensely rewarding. On Mondays I drive one of our smaller buses for the residents at Hunters Hill Lodge and on Wednesdays I drive our Flexiride shuttle bus.

Council delivering for the community

At our most recent meeting on March 9, Council had the opportunity to review our delivery program, as it stands in the six months to December 2019.

It gives us a great indication of how we are tracking at the halfway point in our 2019-20 program of reforms aimed at reviewing and streamlining processes across the organisation, taking advantage of contemporary technologies, reviewing and instigating shared service arrangements, improving governance and providing a new standard of customer experience.

This work will support us to more effectively deliver on community outcomes, as set out in our Community Strategic Plan.

Whilst changes have commenced, the impact is expected to be realised over the next 12 to 18 months.

Six months in, we are already seeing very promising results in key

areas.

In terms of our focus on the community, Council has delivered a successful events program that included Young in Art, Carols by Candlelight and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Council also resolved to enter into a new jointuse agreement with Lane Cove Council, delivering substantial savings to enable improved library services to the Hunters Hill community.

In maintaining character and managing growth planning, we have launched a new online portal for development applications to improve determination times and performance reporting.

Council has also partnered with City of Ryde and the Gladesville Chamber of Commerce to create, develop and deliver a place-based campaign to encourage additional patronage of the Gladesville village precinct.

To make getting around easier, Council has renewed footpaths in sections of: The

HUNTERS HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor MARK BENNETT Point Road; Werambie Street; Prince Edward Parade; Tiree Avenue; Serpentine Road; Vernon Street; and Jeanneret Avenue.

Efforts to manage and preserve our environment have included work on reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and bushfire risk management planning with Ryde, Lane Cove and Parramatta councils.

In the area of leadership and governance, we are upgrading public areas of Hunters Hill Town Hall to make the building more accessible and working on online systems to improve our customer service offerings.

BOAT TRAILERS Our draft Boat Trailer Parking Policy is now on exhibition, with community feedback sought until April 8.

The aim of the policy is to minimise the use of residential streets for boat trailer parking and enable Council to improve the management of this parking and encourage the use of offstreet storage.

Police Supt David Waddell has left the Ryde Police Area Command to take up a new senior position.

His role is being filled by an acting superintendant until a new superintendant is appointed.

Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale and Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett thanked Supt Waddell for his service to the local municipalities.

“We appreciate the contribution he has made and on behalf of the Hunters Hill Municipality I especially thank Superintendant Waddell for his regular attendance at local ceremonies and significant events,” Mayor Ben-

Hunters Hill cancels council meeting because of the virus

Mayor Mark Bennett today made the decision to cancel the council meeting to be held Monday 23 March in response to Covid19 (coronavirus) on the advice of NSW Health and with the support of councillors.

“In the interest of public health, we have made the decisions to move the items from Monday’s cancelled meeting to the following ordinary meeting of council,” Mayor Bennett said.

“Hunters Hill Council is taking every precaution to protect the health of the

community, staff and elected representatives so that the community can continue to be served through this unprecedented pandemic.

“Measures are in place for staff to hold operational meetings using teleconference.

Hunters Hill’s Way of the Cross cancelled

THE WAY OF THE CROSS Good Friday Walk in Hunters Hill has been cancelled this year due to concerns about the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak The Way Of The Cross Organising Committee made the call the cancel the annual event on Friday.

“Taking into consideration the current understanding of COVID-19, the risks outlined by health authorities and recommendations regarding large gatherings of over 500 people, we are saddened and disappointed

to cancel it this year, as a precautionary measure,” the Organisng Committee said.

The Way of the Cross is the largest annual event held in Hunters Hill and enacts the story of The Passion in a walk from All Saints Anglican Church in Hunters Hill to the grounds of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Hunters Hill with stops

along the route.

It draws hundreds of Christians from Hunters Hill and other parts of Northern Sydney and stops include St Joseph’s Aged Care in Hunters Hill where people are tightly packed in the forecourt grounds.

“We believe the safety of all, especially the most vulnerable, as the walk includes stopping at aged

care facilities, should be our greatest concern at this time,” the Organising Committee said.

“We encourage people to gather in their local churches throughout Holy Week and Easter where we know good precautions are already in place.”

The Way of the Cross has been hosted by Hunters Hill’s Inter-Church Council for 19 years.

“There’s no doubt that some won’t have the cash flow to see themselves through this downturn, all around the world.

“Some will be selling their properties and I know a few people whose businesses are intertwined with China and Italy who will not buy property or do much at all until they become more certain about their financial future.

“Others are getting ready to buy investment properties, given the stock market as well as term deposits aren’t very attractive.

“This might take off.

“Whilst economic fundamentals probably don’t warrant property prices increasing, it’s the likely outcome given a 3 per cent net rental return seems safer than alternative investments.

“North Ryde Community Aid - Presbyterian Aged Care provides aged care services to residents in the local Ryde area,” she writes. “ These services are carried out by dedicated volunteers who generously donate their time to help those living in their own homes who require extra support.

“Volunteers are our workforce so the more volunteers we have the more people we can assist.”

The North Ryde based service is seeking drivers, gardeners, bed makers and shoppers.

“Our drivers provide door-to-door transport to medical appointments. ‘Our shoppers assist those who need help with their grocery shopping on a fortnightly basis.

“Our gardeners tidy up unruly gardens.

“And our bed makers strip and remake beds with clean, fresh linen which alleviates the effort involved in washing and drying bulky linen and lifting mattresses that older people often find difficult.

“Due to the current health situation we see the need for shopping-by-list and transport requests increasing as many elderly clients may need to be isolated in their own homes and unable to access groceries themselves.

All volunteers are screened, receive orientation, support and training and are kept up to date with the latest health information and safe hygiene practices.

“Through volunteering our volunteers often develop new friendships, get satisfaction, fulfilment and purpose that you can only get when helping others.”

Vehicle occupants survive horrific collision on Victoria Road Peak hour traffic on Victoria Road was thrown into chaos just after 7am on Monday after a three-vehicle accident involving a serious collision between two cars believed to be trav-

elling in opposite directions.

Citybound lanes of Victoria Road between Belmore Street and Devlin Street and two of the three westbound lanes were initially closed until

more than a dozen specialist officers from the NSW Police Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit arrived at the scene.

CITY OF RYDE council has approved lifting curfews on delivery trucks to ensure essential supplies reach local supermarkets.

The proposed two week curfew removal is a contingency option in response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation and can be operational as soon as approval is given.

It responds to panic buying that has already depleted stocks of toilet paper and other essential items across Ryde as supermarkets and stores scramble to restock shelves.

“This (curfew removal) will ensure enough supplies can be delivered to restock these supermarket shelves,” Mayor Jerome Laxale said.

The City of Ryde has reported a number of confirmed cases of the virus

that include fatalities at the Dorothy Henderson Lodge Aged Care Facility in Macquarie Park and cases at Epping Boys High School and Ryde Hospital.

Mayor Laxale said the council has taken steps to ensure that essential Council services can continue to operate if the situation deteriorates.

He said council staff would nonetheless be entitled to leave entitlements in the event they are directed not to attend work due to isolation.

Casual staff will have their rostered shifts honoured for up to two weeks if they cannot attend work.

The council website will

continue to provide regular updates about any spread of the virus within the local community and will place advertisements in The Weekly Times.

Based on the advice of NSW Health and the Federal Department of Health’s Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, the City of Ryde is still proceeding with its scheduled civic events.

The Mayor said the Council will continue to be guided by state and federal government advice.

He also extended his sympathy on behalf of Council to all of those impacted by the virus.

“This is an extremely

challenging time for everyone, but it is crucial that we come together as a community and help one another,” he said. “ As a Council we will do all we can to ensure minimal disruptions to our services and to provide support wherever we can to those who require it.

“I would advise everyone to take precautions if you are healthy, self-isolate and seek medical advice if you think you have come into contact with COVID-19, but to continue on as normal wherever you can.

“Together, we will get through this.”

Based on current advice from NSW Health and the Australian Department of Health the Councils are proceeding with public events. Council strongly recommends that people who are unwell with a cough or fever or other respiratory symptoms should not attend public events or gatherings.

In the wake of shortages of critical supplies at our local supermarkets, The City of Ryde has lifted delivery curfews for supermarket trucks to ensure enough supplies can be delivered to restock shelves.

Volunteer force established in Ryde aids isolated virus cases

FEARS that COVID-19 infected people forced into isolation could die without food or care has prompted the local Chinese speaking community to create a volunteer relief force.

City of Ryde Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou told The Weekly Times the new volunteer force will deliver food and some medical aid to the doors of patients forced into isolation and banned from contact with friends or family.

“Some restaurants will donate food but at the moment this is a Chinese community initiative and we need the government to do more to bring aid to a wider number of people, especially in a worse case scenario,” he said.

Some elderly people – not necessarily virus patients - are expected to receive support.

“It is common sense that elderly people will have a lower immunity and are at a greater risk of catching the virus.

“Some are already staying at home so we need to be especially aware of their needs and the needs of the families who care for them.

“We also need people staying at home, through forced isolation or not, to stay as happy and as confident as possible because we know that tiredness and fatigue impacts on the

immunity system.”

He said the Federal Government has a responsibility to enforce travel restrictions and do the utmost to encourage hygiene practices.

“The government must also be prepared for an extreme condition and that means having enough hospital beds available for immediate, life threatening cases,” he said.

The Deputy Mayor is aware that Eastwood and other business districts in the City of Ryde are virtually deserted but defended the City of Ryde’s recent $2000 per business relief grant in Eastwood as the best the council could do in then prevailing circumstances.

“We have tried everything to support businesses but at that time consumer confidence was down because of a rumour and it seemed the virus was under control but now, obviously, it is getting worse.”

Although the media has made much of the City of Ryde being an “epicentre” for the virus, Clr Zhou warned it is a grave mis-

take to target one area or blame communities.

“It is unfortunate but this is not only a regional risk, it is a global virus and I urge everyone to be understanding and supportive of one another.

“It is my strongly held belief that we will not only come through this but will we emerge as a better, more caring community because of it.”

He said he was pleased to see the Federal Government announce a $17 billion dollar wage support package for small businesses at risk of standing down employees.

“I think it is a good thing the government has taken action but if it only takes action to save face then that is not good.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said small businesses who meet a government criteria will receive a special $7,000 per quarter grant, backdated from the start of the year, until the end of September.

“The community is still reeling from the devastating loss of Antony, Angelina, and Sienna Abdallah, and their cousin Veronique Sakr,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

“The guardrail is the first of the measures that Council is implementing to address community concerns about pedestrian safety along Bettington Road following this tragic incident.”

Council resolved last month to install the guardrail, as well as a roundabout at the intersection of York and Bettington Roads.

“Installation of the guardrail is now complete.”

Community consultation has already commenced on the installation of the roundabout, with the matter to be considered at the next Parramatta Traffic Committee meeting at the end of March.

“While the road condition was not identified by authorities as a factor, Council has listened to the local community,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

Council also exploring options for a memorial with the children’s families.

Talented Aboriginal artists are sought for local events

The City of Parramatta is seeking expressions of interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander emerging and established performers, dance groups, workshops and programs to showcase their work at events held in Parramatta.

The City of Parramatta hosts several annual events that include indigenous performers and celebrates NAIDOC Week.

The Council stressed that the submission of an Expression Of Interest is used as an expression of interest only and does not guarantee that a performance/workshop/program will be included in one of our events.

Football club in bid for Rydalmere land

The City of Parramatta Council is proposing to enter into a licence agreement with Rydalmere F.C for the use of Council owned land in Rydalmere.

The Club said it wants the land to host community and recreational purposes and activities on a 12 month licence.

Opposition warns of local TAFE privatisation moves

RYDE and Meadowbank TAFE colleges as well as colleges in the City of Parramatta are under threat from a private sector takeover, the State Opposition warned this week.

The Opposition warning comes in response to last week’s Budget Estimates hearing where the government refused to rule out the private sector being given the go ahead to take over teaching on TAFE campuses in Sydney.

The Shadow Minister for Skills and TAFE, Jihad Dib MP said the government’s refusal shows it is being motivated by greed.

“Courses being run by the private sector on a TAFE campus, no matter which way you spin it, is privatisation and the Liberal Government is intent on making sure that TAFE

is run by the private sector.

“TAFE should be there for our students, educating tomorrow’s workforce, but, instead the Liberals look at TAFE and see dollar signs.”

Mr Dib has been critical of government investment levels in TAFE and has previously expressed concern for Meadowbank TAFE, which has been earmarked to be a new educational hub with a school.

“As if to put another nail in the coffin the Minister (Geoff Lee) also refused to guarantee that no more campuses will closed as a

result of an upcoming review, ” he said.

On previous tours across the City of Ryde, Mr Dib has expressed concern about the survival of local industry, which he said relies on a trained local workforce.

“We need to breathe fresh air into TAFE so that we can build a strong workforce that provides the basis of a resilient economy,” he said. “ We need skilled and educated workers to ensure that our economy can withstand any crisis, be it bushfires or C0VID-19.

“The Government

should be investing and rebuilding TAFE and giving TAFE students the confidence that TAFE will be there for them into the future.

“It is simply not good enough and students deserve to be treated with respect.”

RYDE MP Victor Dominello has repeatedly refuted Opposition claims about closures and cutbacks in education.

“We are about opening schools, not closing them,” he said.

The new school at Smalls Road is the latest addition to Ryde’s educational resources.

The pond has been the subject of local concern for several months following the death of ducks due to poor water conditions.

The release of silver perch – which feed off the destructive pond algae - and the release of the turtles could significantly improve the water quality.

The motion put by Clr Roy Maggio asks staff to make a report to identify marine life that would be suitable for the pond, such as silver perch and eastern long neck turtle. “ That once a species is identified and it is proven the animals will not be at risk, council staff organ-

“That the City of Ryde promote and organise a release day for Lardelli Pond and that the Environment section of Council work with the events team to provide the logistics of the release day.”

“The best approach to managing this pandemic is to take all possible good hygiene measures to avoid contracting the infection.”

Dr Patel said that it was equally important for an infected person to maintain good overall health and immunity to fight off the virus.

“Whilst it is natural for some people to be nervous and hesitant in seeking dental treatment at this time, it is in fact more important to ensure good oral health for general wellbeing in the present circumstances,” Dr Patel said.

“We are already doing a very good job protecting our patients and staff via state-of-the-art infection control practices and the use of personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves and eyewear.

“We use disinfectants, up-to-date sterilisation practices, hand washing, and single-use disposable materials and appliances to promote safe dental visits for our patients.”

A further two billion dollars to be spent to protect New South Wales

Premier Gladys Berejiklian yesterday (Tuesday) announced a new $2.3 billion dollar package to protect the community in the wake of the virus epidemic.

The package features $700 million in extra health funding and $1.6 billion in tax cuts to support jobs.

The health funding will assist in doubling ICU capacity, preparing for additional COVID-19 testing, purchasing additional ventilators and medical equipment, establishing acute respiratory clinics and bringing forward elective surgeries to private hospitals.

There will be $450 million for the waiver of payroll tax for businesses with payrolls of up to $10 million for three months.

This means these businesses will save a quarter of their annual payroll tax bill in 2019-20.

“Our first priority is always the health of the people of this State and looking after their families and jobs,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This package works hand-in-hand with the recent moves by the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Federal Government.

“It will provide more resources to help slow the spread of this virus and boost treatment for those people in our community who need it most.”

A further $56 million will be spent to bring forward the next round of payroll tax

cuts by raising the threshold limit to $1 million in 202021.

There is also $80 million to waive a range of fees and charges for small businesses including bars, cafes, restaurants and tradies.

Around $250 million will be spent to employ additional cleaners of public infrastructure such as transport assets, schools and other public buildings; More than $250 million to bring forward maintenance on public assets including social housing and crown land fencing.

A cash injection of $500 million will be spent to bring forward capital works and maintenance.

“Our government’s package bolsters the health system, cuts taxes for business that employed tens of thousands of people across the State, and would help secure jobs at a very challenging time,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the package would help businesses struggling with a once-in-a-generation event.

“The Government stands

ready to do whatever it takes to keep people safe and ensure our economy withstands this storm,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Today we are injecting $700 million into the health system and almost $1.6 billion to boost business. In simple terms, this money will help save the lives of loved ones and protect jobs.

“We are supporting business by lowering their costs through tax cuts and fee reductions, and working to boost jobs by funding ready-to-go capital work and maintenance projects as a priority.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the Government was doing whatever it took to support front line health workers, and urged people to follow important safety messages.

“Our health workers are doing an amazing job,” Mr Hazzard said.

“This extra funding backs the work of our doctors, nurses, allied health staff, ambulance officers and support staff in the fight to prevent the spread of and prepare for COVID-19.”

Passenger with knife arrested as police stop bus in Marsfield

A MAN ARMED WITH KNIVES was arrested after a clash on a bus near Marsfield on Wednesday.

He was arrested around 6.40pm when police stopped the bus in response to passenger fears.

It is alleged the 28 year old Dundas Valley man got on the bus in Parramatta that was en route to the city via Macquarie Park.

“The man walked to the rear of the bus seating himself on the very back seat,” police report.

“At the time he was carrying backpack containing two box cutting knives and a third key ring knife.

“On the bus, the man became involved in a verbal altercation with other passengers where he was intimidating and threatening.

“The passengers became concerned over the man’s behaviour and contacted police.”

The bus was stopped by police at the intersection of Epping Road and Vimiera Road in Marsfield where the man was arrested and searched.

It is alleged the search found two box cutters and a key ring knife.

The Denistone ladies formed a guard of honour at her funeral on Wednesday. Noelene was successful bowler who served our club as head of Selection and as a Delegate. She will be sadly missed.

Sydney FC will play this season’s unbeaten runaway premiers, Melbourne City, the Westfield W-League Grand Final this weekend after they hammered Western Sydney Wanderers 5-1 in the other semifinal.

A 14th minute strike from American attacker Veronica Latsko proved decisive for the Sky Blues as they edged out Melbourne Victory 1-0 in their Westfield W-League Semi Final on Saturday at Epping Stadium.

However, the defending Champions were forced to dig deep throughout the contest as they weathered a series of attacking raids from the Victory – and occasionally rode their luck – across a hardfought 90 minutes.

However, despite proving the hero on paper for her side, Latsko was determined to share the accolades post-match.

“Ally Green put it on a platter for me. Literally all I had to do was toepoke it in,” she said.

“I got really lucky with the timing and she literally put it on a platter for me three yards out from the goal, so it was all Ally.”

The Victory made Sydney work for their win at Epping Stadium as the Sky Blues thwarted a number of raids on their goal as the hosts edged the shot count 15-9 without finding the back of the net.

Juric said that his side’s determination to grind out the result against a determined opponent could not have been better timed.

“I think that’s one of

our best performances in terms of effort and the togetherness that we showed and I’m glad we did it in the Finals Series,” Juric said.

“In the first half we played decent football, we were positive and were set up well defensively.

“We ground it out in the second half in the wind and against a barrage of attacks which was something special.”

Juric’s attention is now on his own side’s preparation ahead of their Grand Final against Melbourne City.

”We will worry about ourselves but it will be a great week and it’s a great opportunity for these girls to achieve something special,” he said.

“I’m very pleased for the club and for the girls that we’ve made the Final for the third season in a row.”

Sydney FC will contest their third consecutive Westfield WLeague Grand Final against Melbourne City behind closed doors, part of Football Federation Australia’s response to the Caronavirus outbreak, with more details to be released this week.

What is a fair rent for a local park ?

For local sporting clubs who think that council parks are there for their benefit, the recent case of Hunters Hill Rugby Club should provide a sobering talking point.

Hunters Hill Rugby have long established a home ground on the oval at Boronia Park in Hunters Hill where the club has traditionally paid an affordable rent.

All that changed recently when the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation Of Councils reviewed the availability of community parkland and the rugby club was hit with a demand to pay more .

Hunters Hill Rugby Club President Glen Sanford told last week’s meeting of Hunters Hill Council that not only is the increase huge, it had to be paid up front.

“We’ve always paid our rent and in 2016 we we told these increases would be modest and then we found a 500 per cent increase,” he told the

council meeting.

“We agree on the $20,000 rent increase but this (rent demand) takes it up to $16,000 in the first year.”

The club believes that such a rent increase – proposed to be from $11 per hour to $23.50 per hour – should not hit the club in one swift demand.

“Our common approach is that a phase in should be a phase in,” he said.

The club also wants the council to consider a discount.

“We believe the contributions we have made in the past and we’ll make in the future justifies a ten per cent discount.”

Councillor Zac Miles agreed.

“I want the ten per cent to be reviewed every three years and that the fees for

the Boronia Park Ovals be adjusted to reflect the additional discount as suggested by the club,” he said.

“Obviously this is an ongoing issue for the club and I don’t think the money should be taken out in one big whack.”

It is expected that the fees will be reviewed on a three year basis but the issue of how much rent the council charges clubs goes beyond the rugby club.

Councillors are aware that players who use Hunters Hill’s sports grounds and parks don’t (necessarily) live in Hunters Hill and this raises the issue of whether or not Hunters Hill ratepayers should subsidise them.

A complete shutdown of the NRL season due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) will not deter Balmain fans from following the Tigers, fans told The Weekly Times this week.As the virus spreads, the NRL could opt for playing games in stadiums without fans but a complete shutdown cannot be ruled out.

The Weekly Times spoke to Tiger fans this week about an idea being floated in Victoria to replace live coverage of cancelled games with televised highlights of classic games from the past and famous radio broadcast calls.

This could include pub screenings of classic black and white archival footage of Balmain’s grand final triumphs, historic footage from the inter war period and famous calls from commentators like the legendary Frank Hyde.

To be a success, radio and television networks would have to commit to searching their archives and make their material available to pubs and clubs, at a hire cost.

But the idea could sell if marketed well and this is where Melbourne has an

edge on Sydney.

Fan Richard Holgate is a regular at Leichhardt Oval and he said that while a “great games of the past” series being shown in clubs and pubs will not be the same as being at a home game, it would be something he would go to a pub to watch.

“I’d watch a old game with a few mates in a heated pub on a cold afternoon with a cold beer and a good meal,” he said.

“I watch any great classic game but I would prefer to watch old Balmain matches or hear broadcast from some famous radio calls of Balmain games.

“A lot of these historic games are already available on YouTube and what’s more, you’ll know the final score even before the match is played, so where’s the excitement in that?” fan Bob Chappell said.

Tigers captain Benji Marshall was back to his brilliant best when he single handedly scored half the Tigers winning points to demolish the St George Sinners at The Gong on Sunday.

Benji turned the clock back to 2005 when he inspired the Tigers to win the premiership for the first time for the joint venture club.

He is now destined to do it again in what may be his last year in first grade footy.

Benji scored a try and assisted in several others and booted four over the little back dot for a personal scoreline of twelve of the Tigers winning 24 points to fourteen.
