However the RSL has suggested that we can all pay homage to the Anzacs and all those who served and paid the supreme sacrifice in wartimes serving their country by simple acts of personal observance.

We are invited to Light Up the Dawn at 6am on Anzac Day this Saturday from our homes and listen to a brief commemorative service broadcast on radio.

Pop-up COVID-19 Respiratory Clinic opens in Macquarie Park www.australiabusinessrescue.com.au

Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM officially opened a new pop-up COVID-19 respiratory clinic at Macquarie Park in Bennelong electorate last week partly funded by the federal government.

WiSE Medical, the ‘walk-in specialist emergency’ clinic based at Macquarie Park, has partnered with the Federal Department of Health, MQ Health, Stocklands Property Management, and the Northern Sydney Primary Health Network to deliver the COVID-19 testing and respiratory facility for the local community.

Mr Alexander said: “We are all partners together in health. Whether that’s the community supporting one another and exercising responsible social distancing practices, or the WiSE Clinic stepping up to the plate.

“Stocklands provides their facilities, and MQ Health and the Northern Sydney Primary Health Network ofer their expertise. It’s wonderful to see everyone working together to keep our community safe. Thank you so very much.

“If any local has any concerns about their respiratory health, they now have two places to get tested locally, Ryde Hospital and the new WiSE Respiratory Clinic at Macquarie Park.”

The GP led Respiratory clinic was developed to assess people with mild-moderate respiratory symptoms and test and diagnose cases including COVID-19, influenza and pneumonia.

A ‘Respiratory Clinic’ is different from COVID or Drive-through Clinics as there is an opportunity for patients to meet a GP and have a complete assessment.

This is supported through an online booking system.

Its aim is to take the pressure off local emergency departments who will need to prioritise severe cases, and relieve pressure on local general practices, so that they can continue to safely care for patients for nonrespiratory related conditions.

The establishment of a Respiratory Clinic that is separate, but adjacent to the WiSE Clinic has allowed the WiSE team to continue providing high level specialist emergency care in a safe environment – for all nonrespiratory needs.

WiSE hopes to reduce the amount of patients avoiding healthcare during this time for fears of contracting COVID-19. Patients that are injured, experiencing tummy pain or pregnancy concerns, are able to be assessed by the WiSE emergency physicians quickly and away from the risk of viral infection.

Even with the best intentions, the federal government’s economic response to the Coronavirus will fail to provide meaningful assistance to small businesses.

It’s said businesses will receive “payments” from the government under this initiative, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Businesses will receive a credit for PAYG withheld on their running balance account with the ATO, but whether this results in an actual cash payment to the business’ bank account depends on the existence of a running account balance debt with the ATO and the GST payable exceeding the amount of PAYG credit.

The Government will underwrite 50 per cent of loans made by eligible banks to business. Our intel is that banks in general will not succumb to any irresponsible lending following the outcome of the Royal Commission.

Businesses that cannot demonstrate serviceability of loans will struggle to secure this assistance, unless someone can pledge personal property as security under a Personal Guarantee.

Any loans obtained through this initiative will have to be repaid within three years, and repayments could inhibit the future viability of the business, exposing personal assets to the lenders if the borrower defaults. Replacing debt with further debt is not necessarily the best solution.

One of the elements of this package is relief for directors from any personal liability for trading a business whilst insolvent over the next six months.

The Australian Government Treasury Fact Sheet provides an example of a business that may take advantage of this relief and says, “when economic conditions improve, the company can pay back the debt incurred”. Can it? Immediately? From what source of funds? When will economic conditions improve?

We may need months to get through the pandemic, but the economic crisis will need years.

Therefore, relief from insolvent trading for the next six months only, makes little practical sense for small business.

Three key things that business owners should be doing is to firstly monitor the business through weekly or monthly cash-flow forecasts and assess ongoing viability. Factor in any incentives you will receive from the stimulus packages. Secondly, renegotiate landlord and supplier agreements where necessary.

Landlords do not want to lose a tenant; the risk is too high to replace now and for the foreseeable future.

Suppliers also do not want to lose good customers.

Thirdly, be creative and try to find other ways to maintain viability. Thought needs to be given to your specific business as to how you can be creative and do great business, in a different way. Albert Einstein said “in the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.” And didn’t he know it. It is the proactive and the innovative who will discover great opportunity during these times.

Letters to the Editor Stereotyping Asians is Un-Australian Dear Sir, I am highly appreciative of all the messages in response to my letter published on April 8 (“Asian migrants add to economy”).

Tony Ikonomou (TWT letters April 15), and several others have pointed out the abhorrent behaviour of some Chinese Australian individuals and companies as reported in recent news articles.

I agree that this behaviour is Un-Australian and needs to be acknowledged and condemned publicly

by Chinese community leaders.

However, I’d like to ask Tony whether it isn’t Un-Australian to sterotype all Asian Australians based on the actions of a few?

Because if we begin to vilify and distrust our own citizens, that will do more damage to Australian democracy than the Communist Party of China ever could.

Placing trust in Asian Australians is about being confident in our own Australian values and the strength and resilience of our multicultural community.

This trust and confidence by their fellow Australians will create a true sense of

Safety before car parking fines Dear Sir, Just been to Meadowbank shops to support local business and very angry to see a guy booking cars in the carpark.

As the gate is always open people assume they don’t need a ticket (like at Top Ryde and West Ryde shopping centres who are giving free parking).

Even though Ryde is a Covid 19 hot spot you still have to push the button to get a ticket which in the time of a pandemic could be life threatening for some people.

Plus there is no hand sanitiser next to the machines.

People are trying to do the right thing

by buying local while management is more interested in making money while others are struggling.

Rather than replacing soap and paper towels in the toilets, fixing the travelators and disinfecting the centre, management are more concerned about making money.

Many Australian towns and parks are infected by millions of messy, noisy fruit bats that can carry three viruses dangerous to animals and humans – Hendra-virus (flu etc), Lyssa-virus (like rabies) and Nipah-virus (encephalitis).

These bats wear Green “Protected Species” badges, but unprotected humans are exposed to their noise, smell, droppings, virus dangers and damage to trees and orchards.

Why we have a hope for a compassionate future The last six months have given even the most optimistic of us cause to drain our half full glasses and despair as we have watched drought become fire which gives way to flood and now illness.

What illness!

It’s tricky, and stressful not knowing anything for certain, but based on historical evidence, current management and our proven social resilience, there is every reason to “hope”, and therefore plan, for good outcomes and for better days together.

Building social resilience while we are all isolated from each other is a new journey for almost all of us but aren’t we doing a great job?

Thanks largely to the internet, the media, and social media, beyond the fear filled daily news, the whole world has become a village of compassion, collaboration and creativity.

One can’t help but wonder whether this will become a part of the new norm on the other side of this pandemic.

National feel good favourites include facebook collectives such as The Kindness Pandemic and an Aussie classic, Bin Isolation Outing (who could ever

have imagined a community of nearly 850 000 coming together to share creative dress up ideas while taking their bins out?).

Locally we are seeing more positive news stories and letters in The Weekly Times and we now realise more than ever the real social value of simple connectivity between hyper-local online communities such as In The Cove, Love Gladesville and Hello Hunters Hill in supporting small businesses as much as nourishing community wellbeing and mental health.

Suddenly our fear and rejection of all of these communication platforms for “privacy reasons” has given way to a greater and more visceral priority to trust, to connect, to care and be cared for and it has been worth the risk.

Our collective capacity to adapt, to consider others and to be kinder to others and ourselves is being exercised and

On a practical level community outreach from Local Councils and Community Services will be even swifter and richer for this new learned experience.

If we have this social resilience and we have “hope”, then we can assume that most of us, even in this darkness, have an expectation of a day when we can return to a new normal.

Let’s plan one heck of a celebration to raise our half full glasses to each other in person.

Who will be invited?

Everyone!

Especially the teddy bears from everyone’s windows that have been bringing us daily smiles as we stretch our legs.

Maybe one big picnic where Local musicians will find their live audience again, shared plates will be passed between reuniting neighbours and new

friends.

Will there be a celebration in every street?

Or on the biggest field in every community?

When the time is right, our communities will make it happen.

I’m a realist, things are hard right now in different ways for all of us but, with all the evidence I’m seeing, I believe there is reason to look forward to something nice, if only to make today more manageable.

Let’s get together in a silver lining beyond this dark cloud!

Whatever we do, it’ll be great and I “hope” to be there.

Hunters Hill mourns death of Citizen of the Year

The Hunters Hill Citizen Of The Year for 2016 - Gary Traill - passed away on the night of Saturday April 11.

Gary was named Citizen Of The Year in recognition of his work in the community and for his contribution to St Joseph’s Catholic College in Hunters Hill.

He passed away after suffering from a serious illness in recent months.

“Gary and his wife, Suzanne, were actively involved in the life of the College particularly whilst their sons, Julian,Chris,Paul and Mark were students at the College,” Hunters Hill Emeritus Mayor Richard Quinn told The Weekly Times.

“Gary and Suzanne have also been generous supporters of the College, and are Platinum Life Members of SJC Foundation.”

Mr Traill was also an active member of the Hunters Hill community.

“Gary was very actively involved in our local Catholic parish here in Hunters

Hill and the broader Catholic community,” Mr Quinn said.

“He was also one of the founders of the Hunters Hill Men’s Shed project and, in 2016, was named Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year in recognition of his service to the local community.”

Prior to his retirement in 2002, Gary was general counsel at AMP. His Funeral Mass was held in the College chapel on Friday (April 17) presided by Gary’s brother-in-law, Fr Peter Lynch.

Ryde Council touts renewable energy

The City of Ryde this week declared confidence in achieving a 100 per cent renewable energy target within ten years but Councillor Chris Moujalli has questioned the cost benefits to ratepayers.

Mayor Jerome Laxale said the 100 percent renewable energy target by 2030 is not only achievable, it will reduce Council utility costs and city wide emissions levels as well as increasing energy security.

He said these utility cost savings will be made by not paying for energy from a (fossil fuel based) energy grid when it can be freely sourced from solar and other alternatives.

“By committing to a 100 percent renewable energy target, the City of Ryde is continuing its efforts in taking real action to tackle climate change,” he said.

Liberal Councillor Chris Moujalli is skeptical when it comes to the rhetoric of climate change and just as skeptical of the financial projections used by the Mayor to justify his claims that renewable energy will reduce costs to ratepayers.

“Ratepayers are being asked to stump up so that Council can buy a clean conscience with their accounting tricks,” he told The Weekly Times.

Councillor Moujalli has been a lone voice at council meetings with his warnings that a 100 per cent dependence on alternative energy is a high risk option that could result in power black outs recently caused by alternative energy failures in South Australia.

“The reality is energy sources such as coal and gas will continue to play a vital role in guaranteeing a reliable energy supply to Ryde residents and businesses, although renewable energy supply has grown and will continue to grow as a share of our energy mix,” he said.

Mayor Laxale does not accept Clr Moujalli’s claim that ratepayer’s are being asked to “stump up” to pay for renewable energy.

“The common refrain that investing in renewables will result in increased costs for ratepayers is easily de-

bunked,” he said. “ It actually delivers energy savings as energy that was once sourced from the grid at a cost is instead sourced for free from renewables, which will result in savings for our ratepayers over the long term.

“To date, the City of Ryde has shown time and again that investment in a cleaner and greener future provides long term economic and environmental benefits for our community.

“As an example, since 2018 Council has divested more than a third of its investment portfolio away from fossil fuel-aligned institutions, with no worsening of our financial position.”

The Mayor is a strong supporter of solar energy and points to the success of solar energy at the Ryde Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

“The City of Ryde is placed second for the highest number of kilowatts of solar installed across the northern region of Sydney councils and Council is already on track to source more than 60 percent of its energy needs by 2030, even if no further interventions are taken.”

Elected Greens and now Labor Councillor Edwina Clifton - who proposed the motion for the staff report - said the 100 percent renewable energy target is a proactive way to support last year’s Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency.

“The bush fires that ravaged much of Australia last summer show the severe damage that can be caused when zero action is taken,” she told The Weekly Times.

“As a Council, we simply cannot continue to wait while other authorities at all levels of government sit idle and that is why committing to this target is such an important step in Council’s efforts to tackle climate change.”

Hunters Hill Council has been the most recent council to declare a Climate Emergency, following Lane Cove’s declaration.

Hunters Hill Liberal Councillors Ben Collins and Zac Miles were nonetheless critical of the council declaration which they argue is a meaningless “feel good gesture” that is not supported by goals or emission targets.

Councils across Sydney are considering incentives to encourage households to switch to renewable energy that include rate rebates and council support for development applications.

Many residents and businesses nonetheless argue that they simply cannot afford the cost of switching to renewable energy on promises of long term savings.

“It is all very well for these cashed up councils to preach to us the benefits of installing solar energy but quite frankly we don’t even have the money to repair a fence to keep next door’s dog out of our backyard, let alone fork out the cash for expensive solar panels, “ one Inner West Council resident told The Weekly Times.

Submissions regarding the application must be lodged no later than 20 May 2020.

They should be addressed to the General Manager and sent by post, email or delivered in person to the Customer Service Centre. A submission by way of objection should specify the grounds of objection. The City of Ryde has resolved that all submissions received in relation to rezoning and development applications will be publicly accessible on request. Council adopts 100% renewable energy target The City of Ryde continues to take a leading role in the fight against climate change with Council adopting a 100 percent renewable energy target by the end of the decade.

Luckily, Council is in a very strong position to achieve this target based on the extensive work it has already undertaken with energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. In fact, Council is on track to source more than 60 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030 based on no further interventions taken.

The 100 percent target by 2030 is not only achievable - it will also deliver a range of benefits for the entire community including reduced Council utility costs, reduced carbon emissions and increased energy security.

And despite what some may say, investing in renewables will actually deliver savings for ratepayers over the long term as energy that was once sourced and paid for from the grid will instead be sourced for free from renewables.

The bushfires that destroyed large swathes of Australia last summer showed us all that we need to take proper action to reduce carbon emissions and I am extremely proud that the City of Ryde has committed to this target and demonstrated real leadership on such an important issue.

Ryde GP Respiratory Clinic The first ever GP Respiratory Clinic in Australia was recently opened in the City of Ryde as part of efforts

by Federal and State governments to respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The GP Respiratory Clinic is located at 11-17 Khartoum Road in Macquarie Park and operates between 8.00am and 5.00pm, seven days a week.

I hope 2016 is a wonderful year for you all.

In my previous role as Minister for Youth, a mentoring programme called Youth Frontiers was instigated and supported by the NSW Government.

I am pleased to say it is still continuing and in our area is operated by RAISE Foundation.

ANZAC DAY 2020 will be different, but you can still show your Spirit When times are tough, Australians have always relied on the distinctive qualities of mateship, humour, ingenuity, courage and endurance to get us through.

The mentoring program focuses on improving the lives of youth in making informed choices, improving social and professional relationships, advancing their wellbeing and coping strategies, alongside empowering individuals through setting and achieving holistic goals for a brighter future.

Known as the ANZAC Spirit, these five qualities have defined Australians ever since the first troops landed on the beaches of Gallipoli in World War one.

In the current climate, we’re reminding Australians that we all bear these qualities within us, ready to come to the fore when we need them.

With COVID-19 heavily impacting on this year’s commemorations, The Returned and Services League of Australia New South Wales Branch (RSL NSW) has shared some suggestions on how Australians can

There’s no doubt that ANZAC Day 2020 will be very different to ANZAC Days of previous years.

While we will not be gathering at services or marches, there are still ways to acknowledge ANZAC Day and ensure Australian servicemen and women are appropriately remembered.

Many people are alone during this time of isolation. It’s an opportunity to invoke the ANZAC value of mateship and check to see how a mate is doing.

Parramatta praises heroic nurses: “This, indeed, had been an Australian Day!” THE PARRAMATTA HERITAGE CENTRE has preserved treasures from Anzac soldiers who served in The Great War.

Among these treasures is this tribute (below) to the Australian nurses who served in Netley Hospital, Southampton, written by Corporal Gilbert Anschau (pictured) whose father was the Postmaster in Parramatta.

After contracting Enteric Fever, Corporal Anschau was treated by Australian nurses in Southampton before he was shipped back to Sydney in 1916 where he wrote this account of the Australian nurses for The Sunday Times Newspaper..

“It was so good to see a bright, cheerful Australian woman, and, somehow, Australia did not seem so far away after all.

Netley Hospital in Southampton cared for sick and wounded Anzacs.

“A stir was made towards the motor-car, and from it baskets of cake and sandwiches were brought to light and off we walked to the Y.M.C.A. hut to have our tea. “ After accepting an invitation for a day’s outing, 20 of us just lived till the following Tuesday.

“On that day a drag called for us, and the party, consisting of not less than 20, were taken for a delightful drive into Southampton to Mrs. Chirnside’s home, where the talk and laughter of really happy Australians seemed to make the time pass all too quickly.

“Before leaving we all inspected the tall, thin gum tree, the pride of the home, and each was given a leaf, which was crumpled and sweet, and quickly our thoughts went back to the dear old Australian bush.

“And, putting our crumpled gum leaves away, we were quiet as we arranged ourselves again in the car.

“The drive through the long avenue of trees, whose leaves had turned a deep

yellow, tinted with red, soon brought the laughter and talk back again.

“After dinner — and the dinner was a real Australian one, having been carefully thought out and ordered some days before — we were taken to the pictures.

“All too soon the time came for us to return to hospital, for the order was rigidly enforced to be back at 5.30.

“So,bidding good-bye, we sang and whistled as we drove back, feeling deeply thankful and grateful to one Australian woman who had let a ray of sunshine into our monotonous, and, to some of us, weary life in hospital.

“Even the clank of the gate closing in failed to take from us the feeling that this, indeed, had been an Australian day.

“And Mrs. Chirnside is doing this every week — Sunday at the hospital cheering the boys up, and on Tuesday taking out a party of them for a drive and dinner.

“Every one of us Australians who have been to Netley Hospital wish we could

make Mrs Chirnside and the Captain understand how much we appreciate it all.

“We think they have more than done ‘their bit’ by girding us with fresh hopes and vigor more than ever to do our best to uphold the love and loyalty of our own Australian folk.

“London is an immense place, and there are Australians everywhere helping the Australian boys.

“But I shall tell you of “Anzac Buffet”, Horseferry Road, Westminster, the Mecca of Australian soldiers in London.

“I cannot describe the kind of feeling which takes possession of us, and instinctively makes us set our feet towards the Anzac Buffet, and there sit and be with our own folk again.

“The Buffet is so cheerful and bright, the girls — every one Australian-born — are so jolly and pleased to do anything, that it is one of the greatest pleasures in London for us to get round to the Buffet, and be once more in Australia.

“There are 300 of them, so it’s impossible to name them all.

An ANZAC message for these challenging times ANZAC Day is a timely reminder of the way previous generations of Australians responded in times of great hardship – with courage, steely fortitude, and a spirit of sacrifice, service and mateship. While our present situation is a far cry from the battlefield, this year, let us honour our servicemen and women past and present by demonstrating that same irrepressible Australian spirit in the face of adversity.

To all who have served, and continue to serve, my sincere thanks. Lest we forget.

“There are many English girls, I am told, who would like to help in the Buffet but it is only Australian-born who help the Anzac to his coffee.

“Another Australian who has done much is Miss May Baxter, a former matron of the Tamworth Hospital, and now in charge of the Coulter Hospital, Grosvenor Square.

“In France, at the College of Juilly, transformed into a Military Hospital, will be found Miss Perry Handley, another Australian, who is one of the directing factors helping in the American Military Hospital for French and English soldiers, and now for our own boys in France.

“Miss Handley, it will be remembered, was in one of our big Sydney hospitals.

“She cannot do too much for the wounded and sick under her care.

ANZAC Day this year will be very different to other years.

This day which is singular to all Australians and our Kiwi mates across the ditch will not be celebrated with the vast numbers attending a Dawn Service or a wreath Laying Ceremony or an ANZAC Parade in the cities or townships. Instead it will be our home that will become a meeting place for remembrance.

The shoulder to shoulder crowds gathered in the bracing air of a dawn service will be replaced by individuals or small family groups pausing in their activities to remember the sacrifices of many. A halt to our daily pursuits to remember and respect the efforts and sacrifices, made by our currently serving men and women of our Defence Forces and the memory of those from other years that have paid the supreme sacrifice that we may live in a world at peace.

Today we are united in our separation as we do battle with that invisible enemy ,the virus, that has no uniform, has no rules of engagement and can strike when your defences are down.

AS we individually commemorate ANZAC Day we are united in that Spirit of ANZAC and we will come through our adversity at this time, turning a hardship into a conquest and to walk a little taller in our victory.

To our Mates: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Anzac Commemoration in Hunters Hill 2020

Much that we take for granted has changed so quickly, it is difficult to know where to start this column as so much that we have taken for granted has changed in a truly short space of time.

Anzac Day, sub-Branch meetings, functions and other social get-togethers are all on hold as we navigate the current health crisis.

The impact of COVID-19 is huge, and it is vitally important that we all pay attention to the current health advice being circulated by the government.

Normally at this time of the year we would be polishing shoes, pressing suits, getting the campaign medals out and digging out of the back of the wardrobe a slouch hat or beret.

Not this year!

For the first time since Anzac Day was first celebrated it will not be publicly commemorated due to something other than a World War.

will be difficult for many, as they will be unable to gather with friends as per the long established tradition.

Keeping Anzac Tradition alive

In our own way, we’ll recognise the men and women that served to protect all that’s important to us. They did so for our freedom! Their sacrifice and mateship forged in war, has helped establish our Australian values.

This act of remembering and paying respects to those that have sacrificed is what keeps the Anzac tradition alive.

It is important that we continue to support the veteran community through this crisis by using the available technology to checkin on mates and others who may not be coping with the new environment of social distancing and isolation.

In the words of the Governor General, it is our duty to be “there for each other, kind to each other and connected to each other”. RSL NSW logo

This Anzac Day we’ll be thinking of those who are currently serving or have previously fought, died or returned, changed forever.

How Can You Commemorate Anzac Day 2020?

While we will not be gathering at services or marches, there are still ways to acknowledge Anzac Day and ensure Australian servicemen and women are appropriately remembered.

There is the Light Up The Dawn initiative.

At 6am on Anzac Day, go to the end of your driveway or stand on your balcony and listen to a brief commemorative service.

Together – even while apart – we’ll remember those who served and sacrificed.

You can sign the pledge to light up the dawn at www.rslanzacspirit.com.au

You can also tune into live services and virtual commemorative services.

The ABC will be broadcasting a 5.30am service from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

There will also be a 10am service from the Anzac Memorial in Sydney that will be

broadcast on ABC and streamed live.

In Hunters Hill the bell of All Saints will sound at 5.55 am for those who observe the Light Up the Dawn in driveways or on verandas.

The Rev Michael Armstrong from All Saints Anglican Church has created a YouTube video – you can view it on The Weekly Times’ website – weeklytimes.

com.au To encourage people to mark Anzac Day, within the bounds of current legislation, by gathering from 5:55am on Sunday 25th April in “safe places” to prepare for a minute’s silence at 6am.

Placing a poppy, rosemary, or a flower at one of the War Memorials in Hunters Hill, Ryde or Gladesville as people take their exercise this

week, ensuring they maintain social distancing.

ANZAC DAY 2020: Petty Officer Merv Cardelli

The following biography of Petty Officer Cardelli was delivered by his son Robert, during the digital service that will be streamed from Lane Cove Council’s website - www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/AnzacDay. The Cardelli family emigrated from the Veneto and Tuscany regions in Italy in 1880 on an ill-fated expedition led by Marquis de Ray. Those that survived were eventually granted land in the New Italy settlement in Woodburn, Northern NSW. Dad was born in Sydney on 25 January 1922 - the eldest of three children to his parents Lou and Ruby and lived a modest life around the Lakemba and Belmore area.

Dad attained the Intermediate Certificate at the age of 14 and left school at 15 to get a job and help his family pay the bills. His first job was with George Cull & Son, a leather merchant and then with McMahon & Co., a millinery company but it was his next job with the P&O Steamship Navigation Co. which later became known simply as P&O, where he learnt the ins and outs of shipping.

He attended night classes at Sydney College to obtain his Leaving Certificate.

Dad was still working with P&O on 3 September 1939 when Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced Australia’s involvement in the Second World but it was not until September 1941 when he was called up to join the Militia, which is the equivalent of the Army Reserve.

Dad’s basic training commenced at the camp at Warwick Farm with the Army Field Survey Regiment - in July 1942 he was promoted to Lance Bombardier.

Dad has always talked about their living quarters in converted stables with their bedding

made from chaff bags filled with straw and that the stables were riddled with fleas.

Dad was trained in surveying, geometry, and trigonometry and to drive and be an observer in Bren gun carriers. These were like small armoured tanks with a Bren gun, which was a machine gun, mounted on the front.

Their aim in battle was to be at the front line watching where the allied artillery fire was landing and then through quick calculations report back to the Command Post so adjustments could be made so that the next shells would land on target.

Some of his mates requested transfers to the Royal Australian Air Force. but dad’s application was rejected by his Colonel who said his training and skills made him too important in the survey regiment.

Eventually his request for a transfer to the Royal Australian Navy was approved – he joined with the rank of Ordinary Seaman and was posted to HMAS Cerberus, near Melbourne, in early 1943.

Initial training took three months before he was selected to be trained in electronics at Melbourne Technical College.

Training at the College included radar and new navigation position fixing systems such as Loran and Decca as well as how to construct a radio, radio transmitters and receivers. Other training included the study of radio waves, electro-magnetism and submarine tracking.

After six months training dad received orders that he was to

proceed to Townsville where he would be part of a team comprising 24 Navy personnel to maintain eight radio transmitting towers.

The following day dad boarded a troop train to Townsville with the rank of Petty Officer.

The towers were located on the outskirts of South Townsville. They worked in shifts of 4 hours on and 8 hours off.

They would work for 7 days and then have 1 day off. Often when extra maintenance was required they would forego some of their time off.

Although radio telephone messages could be sent and

received the majority of messages were in morse code.

The towers were critical in sending, relaying, and receiving messages from the Armed Services not only right around Australia but from the Pacific, in the South China Sea and as far away as London . They played a key role in the Battle of The Coral Sea. Dad remained in Townsville until the end of the war.

A few months later he was sent back to Sydney before accepting an offer of a permanent position in the Navy.

Dad enjoyed working for the Navy, but after pressure from his parents to return to a safer

civilian life, he discharged in October 1946 and returned to work with P&O at the age of 24. He progressed to P&O Wharf Manger until his retirement in 1982.

Although retired from P&O, with his vast wealth of knowledge, he continued working for various shipping companies in Sydney for several more years.

After the war dad married Dorothy and they built a home in Lane Cove which dad lived in until last year when he moved into a Nursing Home I am proud of my father, his life and his service in the Army and Navy.

“Wal (pictured) was chief attendant of the Cenotaph in Martin Place for 78 years, retiring after ANZAC Day in 2018,” Mr Sidoti “He had wanted to join the army but was unable to due to having had surgery for cancer.

“Acting as a custodian of the Cenotaph was his way of giving back.

“His service was acknowledged with an OAM in 1999.

“He was also awarded ANZAC of the Year in 1998 and 2013.

Radio 2RRR in special Anzac Day broadcast

GLADESVILLE based Radio Station 2RRR will take part in the Light Up The Dawn campaign being promoted by the Returned and Services League.

Radio 2RRR Chairperson Leonie McClure will broadcast a special Anzac Day program from 3am that will feature more songs written about Anzac Day. “The songs are from many, many artists including Lee Kernaghan, Beccy Cole, Simply Bushed, Luke O’Shea and many more ,” Ms McClure said.

This year’s Anzac Day will be a different one for Radio 2RRR with the Leonie McLure broadcast being made from her Revesby home.

“I believe in helping artists,” she said.

“I believe in Anzac Day. “This year we have to stay home, so I am bringing the artists’ music to you from my house. “ I hope the neighbours won’t mind.

“There is aLso a recommendation that at 6:00AM people pay their respects by standing with a lit candle in their home, at the end of their driveway or on their balcony, and we will show this respect.”

On Anzac Day - starting at midnight on Rockman’s Midnight Special - 2RRR will be paying its respects to this solemn day by playing songs that commemorate the Day. Leonie has decorated her garden with handmade poppies and will be out the front of her home at 6:00AM holding a candle as The Last Post sounds to remember and thank all who have served.

Arthur John Booth recruited at 16 years, pictured right, with his elder brother Henry, aged 18 and they served in France and Belgium in WW1 along with their twenty year old brother-in-law William Taylor Gibbs married to their eldest sister Bertha.

Arthur was the only one to survive and visited the grave of Henry at Villers Bretonneux while Will was killed in action at Ypres and lies in an unknown grave.

In World War 2 Arthur’s youngest brother George Booth served in Dutch New Guinea and pictured with his wife Nellie and son Alan at their Shepherd Street Ryde home.

George and Alan opened Booth’s Cakes & Pies now known as McIntosh’s at Cox’s Road Mall fifty years ago.

Arthur married Renee Buckland at St Anne’s Church Ryde in January 1927 and her brother Stanley Wilberforce Buckland served in Syria and the Middle East.

Wallaby great Quade Cooper will fulfil a lifetime dream when he wears the Tigers colours in the resumed NRL comp due to restart on May 28.

Rugby League can be grateful we now have a leader in the person of Peter V’landys who is a man of action and determination to push for the recommencement of the 2020 comp against all the odds and the procrastinators of the state and national bureaucracy.

Quade was the star of the game several years ago with the Rest coached by former Wallaby and Balmain Tigers coach Alan Jones versus the Barbarians when AJ declared Quade would be a star in league.

This is a view shared by the Tigers current supercoach Michael “Madge” Maguire who has expressed interest in giving Quade a go at the Tigers in 2020.

Quade is currently

contracted in Japan where the competition is delayed by the coronavirus problem and will need his Japanese club clearance to play.

Meanwhile the Tigers are trying to keep fit despite the isolation problems.
