Golden Wedding for Betty and Mike Betty and Mike Willis will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary this Saturday April 18 with family and friends.

They were married at Villa Maria Church Hunters Hill in the same church where Betty’s parents were married in 1935. Betty’s maiden name was Pilkington.

Mike celebrated his 85th birthday on Easter Saturday and

they were planning a celebration holiday for both events with their children Matt and Tracey, Libby and Matt and their grandchildren Jessica, Lucy, Luke, Sam and Darcy.

$130 Billion Jobkeeper Payment Passes in Federal Parliament

Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM advises that Federal Parliament has now passed the Morrison Government’s $130 billion JobKeeper Payment which will help support jobs, families and businesses across the country.

This unprecedented level of financial support will save millions of jobs and keep families together, businesses in business and preserve the productive capacity of the Australian economy, including in the Federal Electorate of Bennelong.

The $1,500 per fortnight JobKeeper payment is the equivalent of about 70 per cent of the median wage and represents about 100 per cent of the median wage in some of the most heavily affected sectors, such as retail, hospitality and tourism.

It will be available to full-time and parttime workers, sole traders and casuals who have been with their employer for 12 months or more. Importantly, it will apply to the many Australians working in the not for profit sector.

Combined with the Government’s previous actions, this totals $320 billion or 16.4

per cent of GDP in economic support to Australian businesses, households and individuals affected by the Coronavirus puts Australia in the best possible position to bounce back stronger than ever.

“Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures,” said John Alexander.

“The JobKeeper Payment is an economic lifeline for millions of Australian workers and their families, including tens of thousands here in our local area.”

“This is vital in Bennelong and across Australia as we prepare to meet the challenges of today and position ourselves for recovery in the future.”

“Let’s all work together as we respond to this temporary pandemic. Please ask for support if you need it, and if you don’t need help, please assist others.”

In Anzac Day news, the Australian War Memorial Dawn Service in Canberra will be broadcast live on ABC/TV from 5.30am.

The service will involve a revised ceremony with no veterans’ march and no members of the public present.

“Anzac Day is a symbolic day for Australians and New Zealanders with the Australian War Memorial being the centre of Australia’s national commemoration,” the Memorial’s Assistant Director of Public Programs, Anne Bennie said.

The Returned and Services League (RSL) has asked people to commemorate Anzac Day at home.

“As a result of restrictions to this year’s formal Anzac Day commemorations, the RSL encourages people to light up the dawn and remember and pay respects from home,” an RSL spokesman said.

“This can take several forms including from the end of your driveway or within your home, with a candle or the light on your phone.”

JobKeeper Payment The $130 billion JobKeeper Payment is a subsidy to businesses, to help keep more Australians in jobs and continue to earn an income.

Early release of superannuation The Government will allow individuals in financial stress as a result of Coronavirus to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation in 2019-20 and a further $10,000 in 2020-21.

Stimulus payments Two separate $750 payments to social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders.

Child care fee relief The Government will pay child care services that remain open and do not charge for care to help families to continue working and to ensure child care services keep their workers employed.

Support for Businesses JobKeeper Payment This will help business significantly impacted by Coronavirus to continue to pay their employees.

Increasing the instant asset write-off Lifting the threshold to $150,000 (from $30,000) and making more businesses eligible to use it.

Supporting apprenticeas and trainees Wage assistance to help small businesses to keep their apprentices and trainees.

Backing business investment Offering businesses a timelimited 15 month incentive to invest, by accelerating depreciation deductions.

Assistance to business to keep people in a job The Government is providing temporary cash flow support of up to $100,000 to eligible small and medium-sized businesses, and not-for-profits, so they can keep operating, pay their rent, electricity and other bills and retain staff.

Letters to the Editor Funds to combat Seniors isolation Dear Sir, NSW seniors at risk of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic will be the focus of $600,000 in funding to keep our older community connected.

Eligible organisations are urged to apply for the grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

While more seniors are staying at home to protect their health, we do not want to create an epidemic of loneliness in our community.

Our most vulnerable age groups are being advised to follow social distancing rules, so face to face catchups and normal daily routines have become difficult.

Applications for the Combatting Social Isolation for Seniors During COVID-19 grants program are now open until April 26.

We want to fund innovative ideas to help seniors keep in touch by utilising phone calls, online platforms or other methods of communication,” said Mr Lee. “With so many seniors now missing their regular social activities, we want to encourage programs

Hundreds of thousands of people are now working from home, why cannot parliament do the same?

I am not sure how well our democracy works.

But I know for it to work we need communication with our news sources, with other people and our parliament.

In this turbulent, frightful year how would we have fared without reliable news.

Parliamentarians

need information and discussion.

And so do the public otherwise they cannot offer oversight and criticism if needed.

Closing down parliament is both thoughtless and undemocratic.

Days of Lollies & Things on the Peninsula When I was a Hunters Hill kid in the 1960s and ‘70s people hardly had to leave the peninsula to get anything they wanted, particularly in my area near the Town Hall, which I’ll focus on here.

Number Five Alexandra Street was then a fabulous general store.

One side was a greengrocer/deli from memory and the other sold … everything. All kinds of hardware in any quantity you wanted. Only a dozen nails? Sure.

In later years it became a restaurant and I had several delicious dinners over the years there before a fire changed it forever.

Next door at Number Seven was The Hillery, a gift shop where kids from Hunters Hill Primary dutifully bought gifts for their Mum for Mother’s Day, typically choosing the cheapest gifts in the shop – our poor Mums!

It was owned by two spinster sisters and had turquoise and white paisley patterned wallpaper. *** THE BUILDING on the corner of Alexandra and Ady Streets which was recently Bistro 54 was a corner shop.

One of those fabulous places where you could get a full bag of mixed lollies for 10 cents. It stocked lots of other things Mums bought but hey, I don’t think I ever looked!

The optometrist’s was then a newsagent who

closed, as most shops did, at noon on Saturdays.

On Sundays there was an honour system; the newsagent would leave the newspapers on the doorstep and you put your money through a slot in the door.

If you didn’t have the correct change the enterprising corner store at number 54 also opened on Sunday mornings and stocked newspapers.

Across the road The Old Bakery really was a bakery. The delicious fragrance of baking bread would waft out if you were walking past early enough.

I have memories of getting bread and milk delivered to our house. *** THE CUNEO building housed a butcher where Ottimo Kitchen is now.

I remember a pinkish fluorescent light over the counter, and creamy/ yellowy tiled walls. The building was added onto in the 1970s to increase its commercial potential; it’s a skilful job which retains the heritage look.

The Garibaldi Inn on the corner was another corner store when I was little – and yes, it sold lollies. The rest of the building was rather run down.

On the opposite corner The Lost and Found Department is in the building which housed an antique shop when I was a kid. I don’t think I ever entered as it didn’t sell lollies! Later it was a gallery and real estate offices among other things. *** AND CAREY Cottage Restaurant on Ferry Street – essentially a house converted to a BYO restaurant, with a lovely courtyard, and you dined in a range of rooms that would have once been the house itself.

You felt like you were visiting your Nan’s. Delectable smells emanated from the kitchen as you decided on whether you’d have the

beef, pork or lamb roast.

Heaven in winter with log fires burning.

What killed our selfsufficient peninsula?

By the late ‘70s many more people owned cars and were able to conveniently shop in bulk at cheaper supermarkets in surrounding suburbs.

Call It progress. But I can still taste that little white paper bag of mixed lollies.

Compliance is having an impact HUNTERS HILL HAPPENINGS with Mayor MARK BENNETT Thank you to everyone for their compliance with the health advice and measures recently introduced to limit the spread of COVID-19, which we expect to be in place for some months. Together we are already making an impact!

Business as usual for us as an organisation means doing whatever we can to continue service delivery, while supporting the health and well-being of our staff and community and working in line with state and federal government directives.

In a matter of days and weeks, much work has already taken place to deal with the pandemic and take action for the benefit of our community, however and wherever we can.

This work is ever-evolving as we act swiftly on advice from other levels of government in relation to matters such as management of open spaces, planning and council meetings.

Key members of our staff meet remotely each day to manage the crisis response.

All staff who can work remotely are doing so, with the exception of our Works Team and those in compliance, health and building divisions, who are following safe work methods.

We continue to support Sydney Community Services in its outreach to vulnerable residents who may be socially isolated, as well as making phone calls to check that members of our community have what they need and know we care.

Council is rolling out webinars to keep businesses connected and provide leisure and recreation activities for people to do at home.

We will continue to investigate ways to address social isolation and mental health at this time, as well as providing up-to-date communications via our

website, social media and through the support of The Weekly Times.

We are seeking to support local community organisations and businesses by waiving fees for outdoor dining, community centre hire and sporting field use to support groups and enterprises that have, until recently, used those facilities.

In the area of compliance and enforcement, we are continuing to take a ‘relaxed’ approach to the issuing of infringements. Compliance officers are giving warnings in relation to parking matters, where appropriate.

The exceptions to this are where there are safety issues, blatant flouting of the rules or where we are responding to resident complaints about vehicles blocking sight lines or driveways.

We’ve also had positive feedback from local residents who recognise the difficult role our compliance team has, particularly at present, expressing appreciation in relation to the way in which they are managing this.

Most importantly, we want our community to remain informed and stay safe.

Letters to the Editor Heritage Listing for Ryde Civic Centre!

Dear Sir, I am very much opposed to the demolition of the Ryde Civic Centre so I was delighted to see that Councillor Peter Kim had proposed an interim heritage listing be adopted at the last Council meeting.

Since addressing the September Council meeting on the subject (somewhat timidly!) I have not kept up with proceedings, being rather disillusioned I suppose.

My main concerns were, and continue to be, the costs of the “New Heart of Ryde”, coupled with the loss of an iconic, irreplaceable slice of Ryde history, described by Wikipedia as a ‘landmark modernist civic building’.

Costs: I was led to believe that the first estimate to refurbish the Civic Centre was $30 million but this has apparently doubled in cost.

Is there any transparency regarding these figures?

I also believe that Safe Work Australia deemed the building unfit in 2015 and one year later Council workers were rehoused in North Ryde offices.

Interesting to note the $2 million price tag! Apparently reasons given by Safe Work were falling tiles and trip hazards.

Surely those could have been rectified with minimal outlay before evacuating to the North Ryde premises, thus saving an absolute fortune.

Was there an ulterior motive? That would be a rhetorical question!

I did speak to Steve Kludass in September and he was unwilling to divulge the anticipated cost of the proposal.

However I did ask if there was a ceiling to costs above

which Council would not proceed.

He said ‘north of $150 million’!

I notice, when pressed at the March meeting, Mayor Laxale, nominated $109 million.

I may be wrong but did he mention the word debt with that figure?

If that’s the case we can then assume that the Council’s sinking fund would be tipping in reserves of cash over and above the loan required.

This loan would be repaid over a 20 year period by, in the main, future developer contributions.

With the current precarious health and financial climate around the world it would be a brave person who would predict the income from such prospective developments.

Surely a burden of debt which should not be contemplated with great hardships and sacrifices to be made in the future for many in our community and around the world.

I must also make mention of the continued reference to the 85 percent community approval of the project.

A mere 1826 responded in favour. This is a tiny percentage of the Ryde City population, currently at around 127, 000.

That this 85 percent figure is constantly bandied around is truly galling.

Hypothetically, I would question if those respondents in favour knew the cost of the project would they still be answering in the affirmative?

If the citizens of Ryde were aware of the costs and the Council’s potential exposure to debt would they feel comfortable knowing that a hike in rates would inevitably follow?

It was an eye opener to hear that the North Ryde offices would appear to be under utilised.

Thank you for pointing that out Councillor Kim. I feel that in the last few weeks life as we know it has changed and this will be reflected, amongst many other aspects, in future working conditions.

I envisage that increasing numbers will find that working from home is not only viable but also preferred.

To follow this train of thought as it would affect Ryde Council then I suspect that many of the 330 employees will spend more time working from home with flexible hours, therefore less office space will be required.

Conclusion: Ryde Civic Centre could easily accommodate its employees once refurbished.

History: We need to conserve outstanding examples of this era, not raze them to the ground.

The Ryde Civic Centre is a wonderful example of the architecture of the mid 20th century which have formed a rich tapestry of the buildings in our city over many generations.

We are fortunate to have it as part of Ryde’s historical identity.

Surely future generations should not have to reflect, with sadness, on the possible demise of Ryde Civic Centre because obviously once it’s gone it’s gone.

Conclusion: To reconsider the future prospects regarding ‘The New Heart of Ryde’ would seem to be both pru-

dent and necessary in the current climate.

To refurbish the Civic Centre and house the employees there would be the most cost effective and sensible option.

I noted Councillor Kim’s reference to the possible use of the Argyle Centre and/or Battery World, perhaps for consideration down the track.

By means of compromise, the Civic Hall could make way for a cultural hub when there is a settling down of current volatile and unstable conditions.

I am sure Ryde residents would not only approve of this change of “Heart” (eek!) but would endorse and understand the need for it both from a financial and historic perspective.

Thank you for your past and hopefully ongoing support of retaining Ryde Civic Centre.

Un-Australian behaviour of some migrant communities Dear Sir, It is very noble of you Gary Patni (Letters TWT April 8) to defend Asians in our country and around the world in what you perceive to be the manner in which they are being treated.

It is the abhorrent and Un-Australian behaviour of elements within these communities that is bringing attention to themselves.

From cleaning out supermarkets of baby formula and other goods, and shipping it overseas to make a quick buck (on which I am convinced the right tax is not paid) whilst Australian mothers at times had to go without.

More recently whilst the Chinese government was down playing, keeping quiet, and in my opinion not warning other countries quickly enough about the Covid-19 virus, Chinese companies and Chinese staff based

here shipped hundreds of tonnes of medical supplies from Australia back to China.

We are talking here about crucial medical equipment such as protective masks, hazmat suits, and protective gloves that our brave doctors and health care workers are in desperate need of as they face this dreaded pandemic.

Just watch any episode Gary, of the TV show “Australia’s Border Security” and tell me if you think persons of Asian background are over represented in trying to bring undeclared and at times dangerous goods in to our country.

The Asian community and its leaders in our country should be acknowledging and condemning such appalling behaviour on a regular basis, till it ceases, but I am not holding my breath waiting.

Sleep safeguard against Covid-19 Dear Sir, As panic buyers continue to leave supermarket shelves bare I would like to remind people that it’s sleep that they need to stockpile if they want to ensure the best possible health during the virus pandemic.

As the reality of Covid-19 steps up, people are rightly more vigilant with handwashing, social distancing and working from home if they can.

But what they may not realise is how important sleep is to their overall health.

Sleep plays a vital role in the function of the body’s immune system. When people suffer from a lack of sleep, they’re reducing their body’s natural killer cells – the white blood cells

that hunt down virally-infected cells – which means they may be compromising their immune system and increasing their risk of getting sick This is vital information for all people – not only those who are staying up late to catch up on the latest Covid-19 updates, but most importantly for our front-line health care workers who need sufficient sleep to rest, recover and stay healthy.

Not only does a lack of sleep make us more susceptible to infections, but it’s also essential factor for vaccines to work effectively.

Many studies show an increase between short sleeps and increased mortality.

One study found that a lack of sleep reduced the effectiveness of the influenza vaccination by half, indicating just how important sleep is for producing the necessary antibodies requires to fight infections.

Looking forward to when we discover a vaccination for COVID-19, we must also ensure we have sufficient sleep for it to work well.

For those struggling to get a good night’s sleep there are many things you can do.

Having a bedtime routine to relax and wind down before bed, really helps. This could include turning the TV off earlier and settling down to read a good book in bed, but really, it’s whatever makes you feel calm and comfortable.

Bedtime basics for good sleep generally include: avoiding cigarettes, caffeine and alcohol; choosing light, rather than heavy meals in the evening; keeping your bedroom dark, cool and quiet; avoiding bright light in the evening and making sure you get enough sunlight in the morning; exercising during the day.

And, if you find you just can’t sleep, sometimes it’s best to get up and do something relaxing until you start to feel tired.

New ‘fast-tracked’ application process for financial hardship

The City of Ryde Council has created a new fast-tracked application process for ratepayers in financial hardship.

The new fast-tracked financial hardship process is part of a range of measures the Council has introduced to help ratepayers cope with the significant challenges caused by the virus pandemic.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale, said the new process would assist ratepayers by providing them with a simplified and online process for the first time.

“By fast-tracking the process for financial hardship applications, Council is ensuring people who require assistance paying their rates can be assessed as quickly as possible.

“I would encourage anyone who is experiencing financial hardship during this time to reach out and ask for help,” he said.

The Financial Hardship Preliminary Application Form is available at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/hardship.

These forms can be completed online or downloaded in paper form and returned to Council.

Mayor Laxale said the City of Ryde would consider further measures to help residential ratepayers at Council’s next meeting on Tuesday, April 25.

“The City of Ryde is determined to help everyone who needs help during this extremely difficult period.

“At Council’s April meeting we will be reviewing our policies and ways in which we can help ratepayers in need.”

In addition to the new fast-tracked financial hardship process, the City of Ryde has also established the Eastwood Small Business Hardship Fund and waived cancellation fees for swim schools and swimming carnivals that were due to be held at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre.

Council is also proposing a range of other financial measures to assist local businesses during the COVID-19 outbreak.

These are currently on public exhibition until April 28 and can be accessed at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/haveyoursay.

Glades Bay Owl not endangered by river walk says Mayor Laxale

The powerful owl at Glades Bay is not being endangered by the proposed foreshore river walk - despite political claims to the contrary - Mayor Jerome Laxale told The Weekly Times.

112 Talavera Road planning proposal approved by NSW Government Despite opposition from the City of Ryde and the community, I can confirm that the State Government has approved a planning proposal which will allow for a 63-storey residential building at 112 Talavera Road in Macquarie Park.

The planning proposal was approved by the State Government after its moratorium on existing planning proposals in the City of Ryde was allowed to expire.

In December 2018, Council recommended that the planning proposal be refused on a range of grounds including a lack of supporting infrastructure and the fact that the increase in building height and density was not in the community interest.

The decision by Council to recommend refusal also came after the planning proposal was placed on public exhibition. More than 400 submissions were received during this period of community consultation, of which the vast majority were against the planning proposal.

The Mayor said claims about the owl being threatened by a new stretch of the river walk - near Bill Mitchell Park and Ross Street - are unsubstantiated, politically motivated and designed to damage the credibility of the river walk, which is a project he wholeheartedly supports.

“Ryde Council has an obligation to listen to environmental experts and then to act on their advice.”

Councillor Jordan Lane shares his concerns about the foreshore walk.

“This Labor/Green vanity project carries significant environmental risks,” he said.

“The Mayor and his team are hypocrites for promoting themselves as environmental warriors while simultaneously disrupting the habitat of rare and endangered wildlife.”

Concerns about the Owl are part of wider concerns from waterfront property owners about this stretch of the river walk.

These owners fear hundreds of walkers will descend on their otherwise secluded water frontages and they have raised their concerns at recent

He told The Weekly Times the proposed route of the walk takes walkers away from the owl’s habitat near Ross Street, which had been the route prior to the proposed route now.

“What these two Liberals are saying simply isn’t true,” he said.

City of Parramatta unveils $3 million relief package

MORE THAN three million dollars will this week be released by the City of Parramatta Council to help thousands of local residents and businesses cope with the virus.

Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer welcomed the councillor’s endorsement of the COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Package during last Tuesday night’s (April 7) Extraordinary Council Meeting which he said would save jobs and protect vulnerable residents.

“The City of Parramatta Council has a plan to not only help our staff, residents and workers get through this now, but to bounce back in the future,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

“Our $3 million COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Package will help keep people in jobs, businesses operating, our City clean, our cultural life thriving, and some of our most vulnerable safe.

“This is one of the toughest times our community has ever faced.

“Everyone from workers to families to business owners are trying to navigate unchartered territory but we’re all in this together.”

The full amount of the $3 million package is expected to be rolled out during the next three months, with Council already delivering a number of measures.

The package includes the waiving of licence and hire fees for outdoor dining, food stalls, temporary premises, advertising, community halls, parks and community venues for the shutdown period.

Business grants of up to $2000 - with a

total value of up to $100,000 - have been allocated to support local businesses that have been adversely impacted by the virus.

The Council will amend its tender policy to support the purchase of local goods and services and will promote local businesses still operating during the shutdown.

It will also pay invoices from local, small and mediumsized suppliers within seven days, instead of the current 30 days.

A MEMORIAL was opened by the City of Ryde in memory of eighteen year old Christopher Cassaniti who was killed in a workplace accident at the Lachlan’s Line development in North Ryde last year.

The plaque was installed in consultation with the Cassaniti family who chose the plaque’s location opposite the construction site.

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale, proposed the memorial in a recent Mayoral Minute, which was unanimously endorsed by councillors.

The family also chose the plaque’s inscription which states: “In memory of a life so beautifully lived that was taken too soon, a heart so deeply loved and a smile so greatly missed.”

Christopher Cassaniti was killed by falling scaffolding equipment in the horrific

accident on April 1 last year and his loss has galvanised trade union, business and community calls for safer workplaces.

“The family has also established the Touched by Christopher Foundation,which assists families that have lost loved ones on construction sites in NSW and fire fighters who have lost their lives serving the NSW community,” Mayor Laxale said.

The Touched by Christopher Foundation has raised over $135,000, with a generous response from people across TWT Territory.

“The family also actively advocates for better work-

place health and safety laws to minimise accidents on work sites,” the Mayor said.

It was reported that Christopher screamed for help for around 20 minutes after the accident.

“His lungs were crushed and he died of asphyxiation, so he wasn’t able to breathe,” Patrizia Cassaniti recalled.

“He may have felt some pain but because he wasn’t able to breathe he would have gone in and out of consciousness.”

Ratepayers and residents have been targeted as part of the relief package as the Council will implement payment plans for late payments for Council Rates, where ratepayers satisfy a criteria set out in the Rates Hardship Policy.

As noted in last week’s edition of The Weekly Times, the Council will increase its cleaning services in high-traffic public spaces, including more regular cleaning and sanitisation of public water stations, bins and amenities.

To allow Council services to continue at optimum levels, the Council will continue to pay casual staff for up to four weeks after the relevant services or facilities have been shut down and will seek to reallocate them to other services.

Parramatta is also considering a range of initiatives to support the City’s recovery from the crisis, including accelerating “shovel-ready projects”, and reviewing development application and planning priorities.

“We know people are doing it tough and we’re listening,” Cr Dwyer said.

“The groundwork we

do now will ensure that, as a community, we can recover faster.

“Australians are resilient people and I have no doubt that we can get back on our feet quickly.”

The Lord Mayor said he has been amazed by the dedication of medical staff and stories of goodwill during the pandemic.

“At times like this, it can be hard to remain hopeful.

“But I have been overwhelmed by the huge outpouring of support I have seen from members of the community to help those in need including many Council staff.

Meriton’s Macquarie Park proposal vindicated

Australia’s largest residential developer, Meriton and its energetic founder Harry Triguboff AO are often seen as easy targets by politicians and media outlets.

So it was no surprise Meriton’s ‘Destination’ project at Macquarie Park, came under heavy fire leading up to March 2019’s state election and the unsavoury road to approval was briefly headed for a court room showdown with the NSW Government.

That was resolved and the NSW Government ultimately gave its tick of approval to Meriton’s 63-storey residential tower proposal, that Mr Triguboff said would provide a much-needed economic boost to the local area and state coffers.

“Meriton is very pleased that this proposal has been vindicated and we look forward to delivering a project that

reflects its strategic location and builds on the success already generated in our initial building,” Mr Triguboff told The Weekly Times.

“This was always the right development in the right location in line with NSW Government policies and supported by all its relevant agencies.

“It will provide housing in the right location, generate thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions in Government taxes and charges which is critical now more than ever.”

But to ultimately achieve approval, Meriton was forced to not just follow the required due process.

“Actually, (we followed) much more than due process,

given the unprecedented involvement by the NSW Premier to call for an additional review of the area by the Greater Sydney Commission and place a pause on our proposal at the 11th hour,” he said.

“This proposal went through the most stringent assessments - both technically and politically and we were proven correct.

“At this time, we should be encouraged to produce additional housing and development in the right locations.”

Mr Triguboff said “it doesn’t get much better than Macquarie Park, as one of the largest economic and employment centres in Australia with big plans to generate more jobs.

“It benefits from extensive infrastructure, including the new Metro, the M2, a university, hospital, schools and shopping centres,” he said.

“It makes complete planning sense to locate additional housing close to so many jobs and these amenities.”

One of Australia’s foremost building and construction experts, Professor John Smolders AM, said it becomes problematic when politicians interfere with due process, especially after a developer has met conditions imposed by a consent authority.

“Politicians should have very little to do with due process after the stage has been set for a development to proceed,” Professor Smolders told The Weekly Times.

“The conditions that were imposed for the right development at 112 Talavera Road in Macquarie Park should be enough considering they have all been met.

“For a politician to insert their views after the fact in pursuit of what is ultimately a populist outcome, is simply wrong.

allowing for a tangle of NSW Government plans, policies and studies into its proposal and exhaustive consultations with more than a dozen relevant agencies.

Another key condition will necessitate a competitive design process to build “design excellence” nto the proposal and that will delay construction for several more months.

Conditional approval of Meriton’s proposal at its original 63 storey height was outlined in a letter from the NSW DPIE to Ryde Council’s general manager George Dedes in a letter dated March 12, 2020.

NSW DPIE deputy secretary Brett Whitworth said he reached the determination after considering the “strategic and site specific merits of the proposal; the outcomes of community consultation; referral responses from public authorities; conditions of the Gateway determination, as altered, as well as Council’s resolution to not support the finalisation of the planning proposal.

“I am of the view that there is a planning case for increasing the building height and density for the site to allow for redevelopment in accordance with the concept design exhibited with the planning proposal,” he wrote.
