Elysian Fields Music Event Putney-based musician Jenny Eriksson is the proud founder of Australia’s only electric viola da gamba band, Elysian Fields.

Balmain Amateur Darts Association 2020

Balmain and District Amateur Darts Association, which commenced in 1963, has had at times 76 participating teams and is now in its 57th year.

Competition darts are played on Wednesday nights, mainly at clubs, but pubs are encouraged to enter teams. Clubs currently participating are:- Parramatta RSL, North Ryde RSL, Gladesville RSL, Hornsby RSL, Putney Tennyson Bowling Club and Gladesville Sporties Club.

Hunters Hill Theatre started as a play reading group in 1930 and soon began to perform these play readings for the public. The play readings then expanded into fully fledged productions and over the ensuing years Hunters Hill Theatre established itself as an important part of the community providing affordable quality entertainment to its patrons.

The company were fortunate to eventually move into its own premises in 1979 at the St Johns Parish Hall. After some modest renovations the theatre became a hub for performers and audiences alike but sadly the building was lost to fire in 1993.

Fortunately, the theatre company were able to move next door into St Johns Church where once again after renovations the theatre company thrived until 2017, when they had to vacate the premises. The company now performs in Hunters Hill Town Hall.

Recently Trent Zimmermann, Federal MP, spoke about the theatre in parliament and commented: As all of us know, the performing arts have been an essential and constant part of almost all human cultures for thousands of years. Drama was enjoyed most famously in our annals by the ancient Greeks thousands of years ago, and to this day it entrances, intrigues and explores the human condition. It is this great tradition, which is carried on by the Hunters Hill Theatre, making it an intrinsic part of the Hunters Hill community and the broader region.

The 2020 season kicks off the with the Agatha Christie classic, The Mousetrap, followed by the stage adaption of 84 Charing Cross Road and concludes with Jonathan Biggins comedy Australia Day. Coulter Street to host festivals

COULTER STREET in Gladesville will trial a monthly promotional event from March this year.

Councillors unanimously voted to approve a motion

by Clr Roy Maggio to allocate $15,000 to the trial with events to be determined in consultation with the community, stakeholders and the Events Advisory Committee.

The first event will be held on Friday, March 6.

“Head over to Coulter Street and wind down for the weekend with live music and market stalls,” The City of Ryde Council Events team said. “ You’ll be able to grab a drink and a bite at the pop up bar and food stalls.

“Bring the kids along and entertain them with children’s activities which will be available until 8pm.

Councillor Maggio has also requested a report to be issued to councillors on the progress of promotional events in West Ryde Plaza.

AN EMERGENCY meeting of the City of Ryde Council was held last night to take action to restore community confidence in Eastwood in the wake of the coronavirus scare.

The proposed action includes a $500,000 Eastwood Small Business Hardship Fund to assist Eastwood businesses who have seen a downturn in trade due to concerns within the community about the virus.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale, said some businesses had reported a 50 percent drop in turnover since fears about the coronavirus gripped the largely Chinese and Korean speaking business district last week.

“Some have even closed their doors,” he said.

“There have been so many rumours and fake reports that Eastwood is unsafe.

“People need confidence to return to Eastwood.

“The fund that we are proposing will provide appropriate support to businesses as we work our way through this unprecedented level of community concern.

“It will also fund a new campaign promoting the wonderful attractions Eastwood has to offer.

“I would encourage everyone to get back to Eastwood, our local economy and community depends on it.”

Under the fund, businesses with less than $2 million annual turnover can apply for small business hardship

grants of up to $2,000 to financially assist them as a result of lower customer attendances.

The money fund would also be used for the creation of a ‘Return To Eastwood’ public relations campaign, encouraging consumers to shop and eat in Eastwood.

The Mayor also wants to waive the cancellation fees for swim schools and swimming carnivals and waive the notice period for cancellations at Council venues between January and March.

The City of Ryde is to contact the NSW Health to have regular and well broadcasted public health advice specific to Eastwood and Ryde.

Councillor Dr Peter Kim and Clr Roy Maggio have backed an “Eastwood Is Safe” campaign.

This campaign will invite health and small business representatives to a public meeting in the City of Ryde to allow them to address community concerns about the risk of the coronavirus.

“We also want to make hand sanitisers and face masks available at Council-owned assets,” they said.

Letters to the Editor Humans caused bushfire atrocity by ignorance of nature & history Dear Sir, I am forwarding to you a message sent to me written by Graeme who owns a Saw Mill in Victoria.

He says: Never in my lifetime have I ever seen a bushfire become so political, with so much interference from city based experts!

Australia is known for its bushfires, cyclones, droughts and flooding rains so what has changed this time?

I believe we now have a new breed of people in this country that NEED TO BLAME somebody for every natural event that occurs and they have infiltrated our communities with their ideology!

The majority in this country are the “Quiet Australians” who have seen it all happen before and know we will see it all happen again.

Our voice wasn’t being heard!

We knew that the fuel load was too high, we knew that policy had changed allowing fuel reduction burns and we knew that protesting by minority groups was influencing decision making!

Just back on 20th June, 2019 I raised these issues in a Regional Forests Agreement meeting in Corryong with representatives from DELWP, Federal, State and local governments regarding the fuel load in National Parks, the blackberries and noxious weeds in State forests and Parks, the lack of maintenance of fire tracks, the lack of water storages in these areas and outlined that we had a ticking time bomb right under our noses!

Climate Change didn’t light the fires in NSW and Victoria, lightning and arsonists did!! The fuel load was there and it was tinder dry from the drought.

But now the SWAMP is rising and along with social media and mainstream media they are

driving a tsunami of hate, of blame, of rebellion like we’ve never seen before!

Everything that goes wrong has to be someone else’s fault!! They CRY Climate Change but then board an aeroplane to go overseas! The scientists are some of the worst hypocrites in this area! Fly to this climate conference and then to the next!

Children are being indoctrinated in schools before they can even read and write, about politics, climate change, gender equality, sex and religion at such a young age and well before they can make their own judgments on any of these matters.

This indoctrination then spreads like a virus and infects those who we thought were immune, until it becomes a plague of rebellion and uprising against those who are the quiet Australians.

I might be old fashioned, but the Australia I knew as a kid was far better!

We didn’t care where the power came from, as long as the toaster or the lights worked!

We didn’t care if it was a drought as we knew every day was one closer to it raining! I battled the 1st of February 1969 bushfires in 45c heat as a 15 year old, I bent all the linkage arms on the tractor ploughing fire breaks, experienced the extreme heat of the fire, the lack of oxygen in my lungs, being too scared to sleep inside the house at 2am!

I saw the devastating loss of property, and the burying of dead stock.

We didn’t have P2 masks or were told every 5 minutes of the what the air quality was!!

We wet a handkerchief and put it across our nose and mouth and tied a knot in the back and got on with it!!

With the devastating fires that have dominated everyone’s lives over the summer months and the ongoing role played by the RFS in fighting those fires, not much mention has been made of all the other agencies involved, one of which is the NSW SES. Although the SES has not been fighting the fires, it has had a big impact behind the scenes.

From driving the fire tankers to get refuelled so as to give the fireies a break, to loading supplies onto trucks and delivering to communities, to felling and removing threatening trees so as to make communities safe.

And one of those units is Hunters Hill SES. SES members have been involved since the start of this devastating fire season all over the state, in all of those activities and more.

And Hunters Hill SES is always on the lookout for a few more volunteers. Have you thought of Giving Back.

Christmas and New Year Fires and Drought Our year starts on a solemn note with the devastation caused by fire and drought front of mind for all Australians and many others around the world. It has been a tragedy of a scale that we have not witnessed in Australia before, which has resulted in the loss of lives and a huge long lasting impact on people‘s sense of safety and well-being. Our thoughts are with those whose lives have been changed forever.

Having witnessed how people have responded to these events has made me aware that even in tragedy, there are many good people who step up to help those in desperate need.

Australia Day 2020 My first official duty for 2020 was the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony held in the Hunters Hill Town Hall on Australia Day Saturday 26 January.

It was my honour to present awards to those members of our commu-

The Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Ms Gay Harris works tirelessly as a volunteer at IRT aged care facility at Woolwich. Her contributions over past years have facilitated the wellbeing of residents, giving the residents opportunities to know about and attend activities and encouraging participation so they can continue to be active participants in our Hunters Hill community.

The Hunters Hill Young Citizen of the Year Ms Jordyn Richards has made a truly invaluable contribution over a number of years in service

to the local community through the arts, as a talented singer and performer including win awards at many major competitions, competing and placing in multiple categories of the Sydney, Ryde, Hornsby and Northern Beaches Eisteddfods Community Event/Project of the Year was The Hunter’s Hill Historical Society researched and published the booklet “A Brief History of Hunters Hill” this is an important capture and achieve of our communities history and the Historical Society is ensuring that it is freely available to our community.

A TWT campaign delivers this safe footpath for local school

A campaign by The Weekly Times and parents from Hunters Hill High School has seen the local council build a safe new footpath in time for the new school year.

Hunters Hill High School P&C President Martin Brown, P&C representative Jacqueline Crompton and Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett are pictured beside the new footpath in Reiby Road last week. Councillor Ben Collins said it took action from The Weekly Times to get the job done.

Work on the footpath on the western side of Reiby Road as well as kerb widening was fast tracked by Hunters Hill Council last year after councillors unanimously voted to support the TWT campaign.

This newspaper - backed by parents and students had highlighted a risk to student lives due to a narrow and dangerous footpath on Reiby Road which forced students to walk on the road during school opening and closure times.

The narrow footpath known as the goat track could barely fit two students walking together.

It was also alleged the narrowness of the footpath and the poor condition of the footpath led to the serious injury of a student, whose mother made a passionate plea to a council meeting to get the road fixed.

“I’m pleased that our Council team was able to deliver the improvements in this school zone in time for students returning in 2020,” Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett said.

Hunters Hill High School Parents and Citizens’ Association (P&C) representative Jacqueline Crompton said the footpath was fantastic.

“It looks like it’s been welldesigned for student safety and we are really pleased,” she said.

Association President Martin Brown praised the

council workers.

“We’re pleasantly surprised by the speed with which Council got the job done on time for the first school term,” he said.

Council will continue to monitor pedestrian activity of students for all the area’s schools, as well as in the municipality’s village precincts.

Councillor Ben Collins (Lib) represented Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts on the local traffic committee and supported the TWT campaign from the outset.

He said the Mayor and independent councillors

“caved into pressure” due to adverse publicity.

“The Weekly Times was instrumental in getting this done,” Clr Collins said.

“It was only after the Weekly Times took up the cause of the students that the independent councillors changed their position.

“They caved in to the pressure.

“Thank you to the Weekly Times for truly being the people’s paper, and holding these so-called independent councillors to account.”

Mayor Bennett has previously refuted Clr Collins’ claims and stressed that DIR EC FA T FR CTO OM RY

council had a responsibility to undertake a comprehensive traffic study before works were fast tracked.

“Council is consistently looking at ways to make getting around easier for our community,” he said.

Councillor Elizabeth Krassoi has urged the council to fast track footpath safety work in and around the Hunters Hill Shopping Village.

She has argued the new works at Reiby Road are not enough to ensure the safety of students who alight from buses and cars at the shopping village.

Seniors Festival star attraction Domenico Sepe from Napoli and Mayor Jerome Laxale struck all the right notes at a rehersal in Ryde Library on Friday afternoon.

Domenico Sepe will take everyone on a musical journey exploring Jazz, Latin American, Neapolitan music and everything in between on Thursday night, February 13 at the library.

There will also be a talk with bestselling author Peter Grose.

City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale said New South Wales’ Seniors Festival was a great chance to celebrate the contribution seniors make to the City of Ryde community.

“Each of the events planned will provide seniors with a great opportunity to learn about local services and to meet others in the community and includes musical performances, sports activities, workshops and guided walks,” he said.

“In Ryde, Senior citizens are an integral part of the community and the events we have planned for the festival will cater for a range of in-

terests in fun and relaxed settings.

“The best part is that most of these events are free.”

As part of Seniors Festival Celebration, the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre is offering free entry to all seniors on Friday, February 17 rom 5.30am to 12.00pm. .

On Monday, February 10 a Musical Morning Tea will be held in the Ryde Library.

Events on Wednesday, February 12 a Safer Driving for Seniors demonstration will be hosted by the City of Ryde alongside a Home Modifications Workshop at the Ryde Library.

On Monday, February 17, a Tech Savvy Seniors Course in Cantonese will be held Ryde Library as well as a Hearing and Health Eye Talk.

Also on the Monday a Walking Soccer display will be held at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre as

well as a Walking Netball display.

The Aquatic Centre will host Aqua Aerobics classes from Monday until Wednesday and on Thursday there will be a tea dance at North Ryde Community Aid. A Seniors Tea and Tech event will be hosted at 1A Station Street, West Ryde on Wednesday February 19 as well as a volunteering information session at the Ryde Library.

The library will also host the Authors Platform with Peter Grose on the same day.

On Thursday, February 20 there will be a Guided Walk through Meadowbank Park to Anderson Park.

On Tuesday, February 25 there will be a Tea and Talks on a History of Family Names at the West Ryde Library.

Transport for NSW is proposing to install extended clearways on Blaxland Road between Devlin Street, Ryde and Epping Road, Epping to ease congestion and to improve journey reliability and safety.

The proposed extended clearways would operate in both directions from: • 6am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm on weekdays.

Letter from the Hon Anthony Roberts MP Over the last nine years, the NSW Government has worked with several companies to provide Sydney with a more comprehensive and integrated public transport network. Transdev is one of these companies and currently runs the ferries that service our electorate.

Transdev is currently conducting a consultation on a proposed 2021 redesign of ferry services. This is part of the Government and Transdev’s broader aim to increase the efficiency, speed and number of services available to commuters. These services are essential to our community, so I strongly encourage you to look at these proposals and provide feedback via the following https://yoursay.transdev.com.au/. The more input you provide, the more suitable their proposal will be.

There is a significant amount of misinformation circulating about the changes so I have put together some responses which should help clarify this issue.

“Is the ferry service going to change very soon?”

No, the proposal being worked on by Transdev is in its initial stages and is a long way from being implemented. Transdev has not proposed to make any changes to services within our electorate until the second half of 2021.

“Is the State Government changing our services?”

This is also not the case. Transdev is a private company and is currently working on a proposal which will then be sent to the State Government later this year to be reviewed and assessed. I am working to ensure that the NSW Government only accepts a proposal that improves services for the Lane Cove electorate.

“Will it take longer to get the city?”

The new proposed services will come more frequently and will reduce the time taken to get into the city. The proposal is that for commuters who go to Circular Quay, there will be increases in travel time.

“Will the number of services be cut?”

This is not a cost-cutting exercise from Transdev. That’s why the number of services will increase across all wharves in our electorate.

“Are these changes linked to the Valentia St Wharf temporary move to adjacent to the Deckhouse?”

No, the Valentia St wharf is due for maintenance works. The State Government has provided the funding to upgrade the Valencia St wharf, which will also improve its accessibility for our community.

My office and I worked very hard to ensure that the ferry services run from the Deckhouse while these upgrades are occurring. We did so to minimise the inconvenience to our community. More information will be made available soon regarding this temporary change.

Medieval saint inspires Hunters Hill’s Italian care giver

The co-founder of Ryde’s famous San Antonio da Padova aged care has dedicated his Australia Day honour to the patron saint of his village in Sicily.

Peter Maniscalco OAM of Hunters Hill migrated to Australia from the village of Poggioreale during the post war boom and joined the San Antonio da Padova Protettore di Poggioreale Trapani Association where he served as President from 1986 to 1995 and has held the position since 2003.

His OAM recognises his service to the Italian speaking community, in which his first and foremost responsibility has been to the aged care service.

“The first migrants from Poggioreale came to Australia after World War Two but there was a significant migration when the earthquake struck in 1968, when they brought the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua with them,” he said.

“Many of my uncles came came here in 1945 as fruit market vendors and farmers with little formal education and no English and made a successful life here.

“It is because of my admiration for them and my

pride in their achievements that I felt we should do something to help look after them when they retired and create somewhere where they could be together as a community.

“So I became a member of the Association in 1985, when we had some land in Kemps Creek which we sold to purchase the first nursing home, which was in Ashfield with 26 beds.

“Today, with the help of Saint Anthony, we have a magnificent aged care facility in Ryde with 112 people we care for.”

Mr Maniscalco attributes his achievements to Saint Anthony, a medieval Franciscan saint who the patron of Poggioreale as well as his own patron saint.

“Saint Anthony is my protector, everything I have achieved has come from him and without the support of St Anthony and the love and care of my wife Maria everything would have failed or fallen.”

A past president of the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill, Mr Maniscalco has

received numerous knighthoods in Italy which include a Cavaliere, Ordine della Stella d’ltalia (Knight, Order of the Star of Italy); Life Membership of the Associazione Cavalieri di San Silvestro (Knights of St Sylvester) and Cavaliere di Merito, del Sovrano lmperiale Ordine Militare della Corona di Ferro, Italico (Knight, Order of the Iron Crown ), He is also an Honorary Citizen of the City of Poggioreale and holds an Honorary Doctorate from the The Tiberine Academy of Rome.

His local honours include a Certificate of Appreciation from the Premier of New South Wales; the North Sydney Community Award and a medal from the Co.As.It. service for outstanding or meritorious contribution, service, promotion, or assistance to the Italian community.

“I am still actively and proudly involved in Co As It, which teaches young people the Italian language and culture,” he said.

In his own lifetime he has

seen an incredible change in the way Australians regard Italy and the Italian migrant generation once cruelly derided as “wogs who play soccer”.

He notes with pride that today Italy represents the utmost in style and sophistication.

“From the Ferrari to fashion, in all the Arts, in sport and in the quality of her products Italy sets a standard for quality.”

Mr Maniscalco is contributing to this Italian showcase with his own product.

“I have made an investment in my home town to produce a pure and natural (olive) oil which will be like no other oil sold in Australia today,” he said He is also investing in future generations being reinvigorating a tradition from the past.

“Many years ago we used to put on a festa (festival) in Five Dock which attracted 10,000 people participating and it was such a joy that now, through the support of Drummoyne MP John Sidoti, we are going to bring in back to Five

Dock next January.”

Although involved in many projects, he stressed his first responsibility is to the San Antonia da Paduva community.

“It is a big responsibility on my shoulders and I give my all,” he said.

“I’ve been fortunate to have worked with some wonderful board members but I’m not the kind of person to sit back and run things as an administrator.

“It is an honour for me to know each and every resident and do what I can to help care for them and to meet their needs.

Now a grandfather, he reflected on his legacy.

“My work is known all over America and across Italy but my Christian faith is what has inspired me, my faith in St Anthony and my one thousand per cent faith in my community.”

RYDE celebrity Roseanna Gallo OAM was at San Antonio Da Padua Aged Care in Ryde on Thursday when The Epping Eastwood Lions Club donated musical instruments to the residents.

The musical instruments include tambourines, symbols and other hand held music makers which will be used by residents during sing-a-longs and small concerts.

The Lions Club donation was made possible by the caring team at Lady Anne Funerals in West Ryde which sought the club’s help.

“Lady Anne Funerals has provided entertainment to local aged care facilities in our area once monthly for 11 months of the year for many years,” Lady Anne Funerals Marketing Officer Edwina Brown said.

“For at least the last five years, I have attended many concerts with Ro-

seanna who always had percussion instruments to hand out to residents.

“It was the use of these percussion instruments that made the difference to concerts and the enjoyment level of residents.

“The warmth that envelopes you when you see residents who may not have spoken for some time suddenly sing because they recall the words.

“And not forgetting the wonderful smiles, movement and enjoyment they receive.”

Edwina Brown said that due to the age and frailty of residents and the use of the instruments at varied events, they had to be

light, hand held and able to be used without prior musical training.

“I therefore sought funding for light weight, easy to use instruments for dementia patients through various organisations.

“One led me to the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia’s Grant Performers Trust Foundation but I was advised that it was highly unlikely to be approved.

“At an Epping Eastwood Lions Club meeting I mentioned my struggle to find funding for the instruments.

“It was suggested that I put forward a proposal which I did and today we are presenting 40 percus-

sion instruments to San Antonio Da Padova for use by their residents.”

The first performance featuring the instruments took place at the presentation ceremony on Thursday, where Ryde celebrity Roseanna Gallo OAM led residents in song.

“I have had the honour to be closely involved with San Antonio Da Padua for more than two decades and it is a delight to perform for these beautiful residents,” she said.

“It is an absolute delight to have them accompany me on their new instruments, which are well suited to many of the well known Italian songs we love.”

Ferry route changes a titanic mistake say passengers RIVERCATS will be scrapped and Barangaroo could replace Circular Quay as a key destination for Parramatta River commuters under a radical shake up of ferry services.

The proposed changes being considered by Sydney Ferries owner Transdev have amazed local residents who recently heard about the proposed changes through rumours that have since been confirmed by an investigation by The Weekly Times this week.

This newspaper can confirm that Trandev proposes to scrap the Rivercats, Supercats and Harbourcats which will be replaced by more than 10 new environmentally friendly “low wash” Parramatta River Class ferries and three new Emerald Class ferries.

Barangaroo is being developed to “lesson the load” on Circular Quay, a key destination for Par-

ramatta River commuters because of the proximity of Circular Quay Railway Station which serves the City Circle Line.

“A key concept of the changes is the growing role Barangaroo plays in public transport,” Transdev confirmed this week.

“Using this location also helps lesson the load on busy Circular Quay wharves and allows for improved frequency of service for river customers during both peak and off peak services.”

Transdev said “a critical part of the proposal” will be an interchange at Balmain East for passengers who need to access lower north shore wharves and Circular

Quay.

Max Redmayne of Russell Lea fears the changes will result in longer waiting times.

“I note with alarm that the F3 ferries along the Parramatta River should terminate at Barangaroo, rather than Circular Quay,” he said.

“What about the hundreds of children who commute to North Sydney schools from the West ? ‘‘They will now have to change at Balmain East, increasing commute time and creating pandemonium at the ferry wharf.”

“These bizarre changes are extremely ill advised.”

Commuter Brian Mulligan was at Kissing Point ferry wharf on Wednesday with City of Ryde councillors Roy Maggio and Dr Peter Kim where he blasted the proposed changes.

“It is outrageous for Transdev to claim the Barangaroo proposal will improve commute times because the direct ferry to Circular Quay gives us a five minute walk to Circular Quay railway station with access to the city circle and a direct link to the airport,” he said.

“I certainly don’t want to go to Barangaroo unless it is to go to a restaurant and I do not want to wait there for a bus that goes somewhere to the city.”

He said Transdev had failed to adequately consult waterfront residents from Lane Cove to Parramatta and is sceptical that no new ferry timetables have been proposed.

“Are they (Transdev) aware that the 507 bus stops running at 7pm and that we rely on the ferry from Circular Quay to Parramatta after 7pm?”

Drummoyne’s John Tierney works at Broadway and said that Transdev has “got it right” about Barangaroo.

He said previous Labor governments saw merit in Barangaroo as a transport hub because they “correctly predicted” there would be a tremendous growth in businesses relocating to the new growth areas in and around The Rocks, Pyrmont, Ultimo and Broadway.

“The nearest railway station to these areas is Central, a good half hour walk from there to work, so a regular running bus or light rail service from Barangaroo makes sense.”

Councillor Roy Maggio warned that CBD passenger anger over the proposed changes could cost Ryde MP Victor Dominello, Lane Cove MP Anthony

Roberts and Parramatta MP Geoff Lee their jobs.

“In fact I would expect that any Liberal state member with a seat covering the Parramatta River will lose their jobs,” he said.

“Has cabinet considered statistics of the percent of workers who alight from Circular Quay to that of the alternative stop at Barangaroo, which generally supports restaurant patrons?

“I should not have to explain why Circular Quay is more important but the main factor is the additional time it will take to arrive at one’s destination.”

Dr Kim is particularly concerned about ratepayers who purchased homes in suburbs that front the Parramatta River because of the reliability of direct, peak hour ferries to Circular Quay and Parramatta.

“This is a particularly inaccessible part of the City of Ryde .. workers’ jobs depend on getting to work on time.”

Councillor Maggio has

written to Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, confident that he will read this article and act to save existing ferry routes.

“No government should decrease the ferry service and there should be more services at the weekend,” he told Mr Roberts.

Max Redmayne has suggested that “cost cutting” – not lessening the load at Circular Quay - is behind the Transdev proposal.

But when The Weekly Times spoke with (Woolwich to Circular Quay) commuters they pointed out that reducing the amount of wharf space given over to privately operated cruise boats would be the most effective and immediate way to lesson the load on Circular Quay.

The Weekly Times has had a close association with the Rivercats, which were named after famous Australian sporting heroes on the initiative of TWT Managing Editor John F Booth AM.

Jerome the builder visits new park

CITY OF RYDE Mayor Jerome Laxale was in Denistone East on Thursday to supervise a new upgrade to Kings Park.

Located at the former site of the Denistone East Bowling Club, the $2.2 million dollar upgraded park will feature a mixture of attractions for all ages.

These attractions include a neighbourhood playground with a shade sail, pathways, a large sheltered area capable of accommodating 20 people for community events, a multi-purpose court for basketball and futsal, a toilet block, a kick-about area and passive

relaxation areas Council approved the Master Plan for Kings Park last year and Mayor Laxale described it as a first-class outdoor facility.

“Providing more open spaces for the community is a key goal for this Council and the upgrade to Kings Park is yet another example of this,” he said.

“Our community has told us that open space, along with venues to hold small family events is something they are after and this park delivers that.”

He said community consultation has been a key aspect of the Kings Park

project.

“The design and features of the upgraded Kings Park were based on the feedback we received from the community ensuring that this new park will serve our community for generations to come.”

The works are expected to take around six months with the new Kings Park set to open to the public in July this year.

Street library applications open I am delighted to report that the City of Ryde has once again teamed up with Street Library Australia to give local residents and organisations the chance to install their very own street library.

Street libraries have been popular attractions throughout our local streets, allowing people to share books while also activating our public places.

We currently have 10 street libraries looking for a home and are inviting applications from local residents, childcare centres, schools, community organisations, community members, volunteers and businesses.

Some preference will be given to locations that will serve a wide and diverse community, as well as applicants that can demonstrate a genuine commitment to installing and caring for the street library to ensure it thrives.

Reducing cigarette butt litter A trial to reduce cigarette butt litter undertaken by the City of Ryde in association with the NSW Government has produced excellent results.

The trial aimed to reduce cigarette butt litter by trialling four different interventions at various smoking hotspots, each with unique messaging and signage.

THURSDAYS

Meadowbank Train Station, West Ryde Marketplace and Top Ryde City Shopping Centre were part of the trial with each site showing improvement in cigarette butt binning rates of between 26 percent and 48 percent.

We will now utilise the results of the trial to install similar messaging and methods of reducing cigarette butt litter in target hotspot locations throughout Ryde.

The trial is part of our continual work to provide a ‘Smarter, Cleaner, Greener’ environment for the community and this trial has identified ways in which we can continue to achieve this objective.

Researchers at Macquarie University will work with industry partners to ensure our rivers are sustainable and resilient against natural disasters, Bennelong MP John Alexanmder said this week.

Mr Alexander said the Coalition Government was providing $600,000 to ensure our rivers are future-proofed against floods and droughts.

The project is titled ‘Working with recovery: Future proofing our rivers against floods and droughts’, and will look at ways that rivers in coastal NSW are recovering after 200 years of degradation.

“This project will explore how river recovery occurs, its impact on flood flows, and test new techniques to improve vegetation quality,” Mr Alexander said.

“This research will benefit public policy, improve flood and drought risk analysis and change decision-making and rehabilitation practice - essentially future-proofing our rivers.”

Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan said the Coalition Government was investing in research and innovation that will benefit Australians.

“Our Government is investing in partnerships between universities, industry and government to drive the commercialisation of research,” Mr Tehan said.

“We are encouraging greater collaboration between universities and businesses on research innovation and workforce preparation.”

Macquarie University’s Professor Kirstie Fryirs and her team will receive the $600,000 in funding over three years under the Australian Research Council Linkage Project scheme.

“This project is particularly timely given that floods, droughts and anthropogenic disturbances are becoming more intense, and new and novel management actions are required to ensure our rivers continue to provide the services that support the environment, society, economy

Macquarie University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Sakkie Pretorius congratulated the University’s researchers for securing the grant.

“This collaborative project will leverage Macquarie University’s world-leading research expertise to address a pressing environmental issue facing Australia today.”

“By partnering with industry, other research organisations and landowners, this project promises to uncover innovative solutions with real-world impact.”

The funding is augmented with $225,000 from industry.

The Linkage Program promotes national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies.

The aim is to understand just how river recovery occurs and the impact it will have on flood flows.

This has practical as well as theoretical importance.

The Macquarie University led project will work with industry partners, Landcare Australia and NSW Local Land Services, to provide proof of concept that river recovery is happening at the regional scale and understand the geomorphic and vegetative processes that are promoting recovery.

The project will trial new techniques and work out the best management approaches to maintain and enhance recovery into the future. It will investigate where corridors of recovery are, where to prioritise rehabilitation and the cost:benefit of working with recovery in river management practice.

A tribute to a hero

The Royal Rehab in Putney has posted a tribute to founder Susan Schardt on the Royal Rehab website.

The website features historic photographs and historic information on Ms Schardt, whose name graces a street at the Royal Rehab.

“Explore the aisles of Australian libraries and you will find incomplete histories of our country,” the tribute notes.

“One noticeable gap relates to people with disabilities.

“For most Australians, the name Susan Schardt doesn’t ring any bells or resonate with any familiar story.

“But for people living with disabilities, Susan is the single reason that we now have leading providers of world-class disability services.”

The website goes on to tell the untold story of Susan Schardt, which describes her as a trailblazer who led the disability support movement in Australia,.

She is now being given the recognition she deserves,120 years later.

“Australia’s history tells a tale of people with disability being ignored and locked away from society in institutions.

“One hundred years ago, the estimated 18 percent of Australians living with disabilities today would have been labelled as ‘incurables’ or ‘invalids’.

“Society saw them as having brought it onto themselves by their own ‘foolishness or conduct’, even if the individual was born that way.

“Before 1908, the Aus-

tralian government provided no support to people with disabilities “It was up to individuals, like Susan Schardt, to rise as heroes to support people who were most vulnerable.”

Susan Schardt was born blind.

Growing up she attended a school named “for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind.

“She chose not to marry because of the difficul-

ties she would face taking on the role of wife and mother.

“Seeking greater purpose in her life, Susan visited Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney to council and comfort patients living with many forms of disability.

“She was called the Angel Of The Ward because the eyes of children would brighten whenever she came to their door.”

Anthony Roberts MP wants to know your opinions about Kissing Point...

Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts has invited constituents to have a say on an early concept design for an accessibility upgrade at Kissing Point Wharf.

The upgrade is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, which is an initiative to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure across the state.

“The new and improved Kissing Point Wharf will provide better customer safety, accessibility and comfort,” Mr Anthony Roberts said.

“The plans include a new floating pontoon and gangway that will make

it easier for our less mobile customers to board and disembark from ferries, better protection from the elements, new seating areas and waiting areas and improved features such as lighting and CCTV. “I encourage anyone who is interested to look over the planning documents and provide feedback to the project team.”

Mr Roberts also regularly visits our local wharves and welcomes comments from locals.

The early concept designs are available for feedback until 5pm, Monday, February 17 at rms.nsw.gov.au/kissingpoint-wharf or to view at City of Ryde Council at1 Pope Street in Ryde.

Transport for NSW is also hosting an information session at Kissing Point Wharf on Waterview Street in Putney on Thursday, February 6 between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Cocaine found in strip search COCAINE was allegedly found on a man refused entry to the Bayview Hotel in Gladesville on Sunday night.

It is alleged the drug was found when the 35 year old Condell Park man was searched shortly after 8.20pm when he was refused entry due to drunkeness.

The girls and ladies at Gladesville Ryde Physie return to classes this week and the excitement and energy in class was tremendous.

Monday afternoon and evening kicked off with Juniors and Ladies classes for 2020 with a sensational dance energy, a great work out and of course lots of fun and socialising.

Thursday evening sees the 13 Years to Seniors return to class and the start of a sensational journey in choreography. “The Sylla-

bus for our senior girls is one of the most exciting to learn and teach.” said Janelle Mitchell, Teacher.

“The choreography covers a wonderful array of dance elements, is physically challenging and celebrates the beauty of dancing with expression and stunning technique. Better still the choreography caters for all levels and experience. There is definitely something for those new to dance and for those who have previous dance experience and looking to return to the stage or try

Great Britain’s lionhearted training day in Ryde GREAT BRITAIN’S touring Hockey team was at the Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Club’s Keith Thompson Hockey Centre in North Ryde on Thursday as part of a fundraising and training promotion.

The team raised $1,200 to go towards the Red Cross bushfire appeal that included the auction of a signed Great Britain team shirt purchased by a local family.

Team Captain Adam Dickson told The Weekly Times the tourists had heard about the tragic loss of life in the bushfires and wanted to do something to help.

“The bushfires have been extensively covered on the news back home and these scenes have certainly put sport into perspective and our thoughts are with all those affected.,” he said.

“This has also been an amazing opportunity to do a training session with the Ryde Panthers Club, have some fun and share our knowledge.”

The Great Britain team is currently ranked seventh in the world and the team have embraced the growing proffesionalism in the sport.

“We can beat anyone in the world on our day,” he said.

“Our strength is our sense of togetherness and our pride in Britain and I can honestly say I have never heard our national anthem played before a game without a tear in my eye.”

The Panthers Junior President Kirrily Pereira thanked the Great Britain team for hosting the training session, which she said taught new skills to emerging local hockey stars.

Hockey Australia CEO Matt Favier thanked the Great Britain team for supporting the bushfire appeal.

“This is a wonderful gesture by Great Britain, not only in their support of helping raise funds for the bushfire relief but for the players to devote some of their time to run a clinic ahead of the Pro League matches this weekend,” he said.

“While we are competitors on the field, when it comes to causes such as the one Australia is facing at the moment, the international hockey community really galvanises together and the support and goodwill shown has been tremendous.”

“Some of the Kookaburras players will also run clinics at Sydney Olympic Park before the double headers on Saturday and Sunday with all proceeds going to the bushfire appeal, so we are delighted to see hockey being able to make a contribution to a crisis that has affected so many people.”

Tigers Congratulated on their tenacious 112th birthday The Weekly Times this week congratulates the Balmain Tigers on the club’s 112 Birthday.

This newspaper has stood strongly and proudly behind the Tigers since we were founded in 1921, only 13 years after the Balmain Tigers were founded.

Since then, the Balmain Tigers have thrilled generations of fans with their Never Say Die attitude to rugby league and their commitment to breeding tiger cubs from TWT Territory, notably from Holy Cross College in Ryde which produced legends Benny Elias and Luke Brooks.

Today the Balmain Tigers breeds tiger cubs through the ranks of the Ryde Eastwood Hawks and the club pay tribute to past generations on the club website.

“One hundred and twelve years ago the Balmain Tigers were founded at the Balmain Town Hall,” “Thank you to all the players, staff and most importantly the fans for your continued support for the

last 112 years.”

Tiger fan Steve Freney wrote: “My grandparents (both sets ), uncles, parents, daughter and grand daughter were all keen Balmain Tigers supporters.

“As an old Glebe PBC and Flegg player I still love the Balmain Tigers juniors.”

Paul Sloane agreed. “ Happy birthday to the might Balmain Tigers.

“I am a true blue TIGERS fan and I was born in Balmain Hospital 52 years a go.”

Sue Costa is one of the many female fans who follow the Tigers.

“Happy Birthday Tiges, I’ve been a Balmain Tigers girl since 1965 and it is also my 60th anniversary.”

Teena Graham wrote: “Happy Birthday to the mighty Tigers...born and bread a tiger..always answer Balmain Tigers when asked who my team is and

always will.”

Phillip McMahon wrote that the Balmain Tigers creation has made the world a much better place.

“It was forged at a time when men and woman in Balmain and surrounding area needed a strong commitment to each other and the community.

“It is the glue for so many people and I’m.always a Balmain Tiger.”

A Foundation Member of the New South Wales Rugby League, the Balmain Tigers are one of the most successful clubs in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles.

The Tigers have always worn black and orange and have a strong association with the docklands of Balmain and Rozelle.

The Tigers’ name evolved from the distinctive black and orange colours of their 1908 thin striped jerseys although their is an urban legends the name also reflects the

number of tabby cats that would hang around the ports of Balmain, Birchgrove and Glebe hoping for a morsel from fishing vessels.

Their first home ground was Birchgrove Park in Balmain and the club reached a first Grand Final in only the second year in the competition against the previous year’s champions, South Sydney.

The match was won

by Souths but there was a protest because this match was scheduled as a warm-up for a Kangaroos against the Wallabies game at Souths’ home ground.

With a Never Say Die attitude, the Tigers soon became a dominant force during World War One, with the club’s first, second and third Premierships coming in successive years dominating the 1915, 1916 and 1917 seasons.

The Tigers dominance continued with wins in the 1919 and 1920 seasons but when the club won the 1924 premiership, it would be the last success for over a decade to come.

In 1939 the Tigers won the grand final smashing Souths by 33 to 4.

The weekend of the Final coincided with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland and Australia’s declaration of war.

Post-World War II marked a golden era for Balmain with the Tigers reaching five consecutive Grand Finals winning three of them.

In the 1944 Grand Final, the Tigers beat the strong favourites, the Newtown blue bags by 19 to 16.

Balmain reached the Grand Final again in 1945 but lost to Easts by a narrow 22 points to 18.

The Tigers went on to take out the next two seasons, beating St George 14-12 in 1946 and Canter-

Madge coup completes Grand Final Cup team!

ADAM DOUEIHI is the missing link wanted by the Tigers to go all the way on Grand Final day to take out NRL Premiership honours.

Tigers supercoach Michael “Madge” Maguire now has all the ammunition he needs to fire full blast from opening round of the NRL comp at the Gong when the Tigers will blast the Sinners Sunday March 15.

Adam was the most sought after player in the marketplace as a certain star of the future.

He has featured at fullback, centre, wing and halfback and at nineteen starred in four Tests for Lebanon in 2017

NRL World Cup and scored two tries for the Cedars.

As a Dundas Shamrocks junior he’s now back home after time served at the Bunnies in 2018 and 2019 making his NRL debut against Penrith Panthers.

Adam completes a formidable line up in recent days including Samoan international forward Joseph Leilua who signed last Monday and will join up with

his brother Luciano.

Madge reckons Joseph is one of the most dangerous attacking players in the comp and will take the Tigers to a new level going forward.

And that’s what we need to win a competition. Good strong up in your face forwards. And that’s what Joseph is.

Other recent signings are Zane Musgrove and Stafano Utoikamanu a nine-

teen year-old 115 kg forward booked for next year.
