Major Charlie Lynn OAM has walked the Kokoda Track 99 times mainly as a guide for visiting groups and will complete 100 treks early next year.

The former soldier turned politician as a member of the NSW Legislative Council (MLC) and now a dedicated fighter for ex-servicemen and women was a VIP regular guest at Sunday’s 77th Kokoda Day Flag Raising Ceremony at Concord’s Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway.

JA walks for charity

BENNELONG MP John Alexander OAM set off for his annual charity walk across the electorate on Monday.

Mr Alexander started the 100km Walk For Charity at ELS Hall Park in Kent Road, North Ryde and plans to finish the Walk at Eastwood Oval on Friday afternoon, November 22.

It will take him across the electorate on a zig zag route where he hopes to meet constituents and talk about the work being done by this year’s chosen charity, Rare Voices Australia.

“This wonderful organisation supports more than two million Australians living right now with a rare disease, with almost half that number being children,” he said.

The Bennelong MP conceded that rare diseases do not get as much media coverage as some other diseases and he wants to raise awareness of rare diseases through his Walk.

“The reality is that most attention is directed at the individual diseases that affect the largest numbers of people,” he said.

“This is understandable, but when considered collectively, rare diseases affect more people in Australia than even diabetes.

Kim breaks ranks with Labor over heritage TWT EXCLUSIVE Ryde Labor councillor Peter Kim’s rift with fellow Labor councillors over the controversial forced heritage listing of local properties has continued with a public denunciation of policies dictated by the party’s hard Left.

In a Facebook post on the weekend Clr Kim lamented the “left faction controlled Ryde council is way out of touch with the middle class people and quite frankly disconnected from the voters!”

“I am a middle class person and I feel absolutely frustrated with their policies,” wrote Clr Kim. “Labor will never win Ryde unless they reshape. And, it should start with listening to people and connecting with them.

“It’s sad to see a good party eating away people’s aspiration.”

Clr Kim’s comments stem from multiple concerns over the handling of the heritage issue and principally the “unlawfulness of promising (residents) that their house will not be listed in 2010 and then overturning that promise”.

He said he had also ‘door knocked’ more than 300 residents in all four proposed Heritage Conservation Areas in West Ward to hear their concerns.

Letters to the Editor Boys welcome at Council meeting Dear Sir, On Monday night at Hunters Hill Council Jack Dixon addressed the Council with a request to include consideration of a sanctioned small bike hub, teen meet up space and pump track in the Boronia Park Draft Plan of Management.

I would like to congratulate the boys and their parents for reaching out to have a conversation about their ideas.

Jack had put together a great presentation citing examples from around Sydney as well as advocating the social and physical health benefits of this outdoor pastime and now Olympic sport.

The boys did all this and stayed out late on a Monday night to present their suggestion in the full knowledge that there is a process to follow and that the outcome they hope for may not eventuate for any number of reasons.

All the more reason to congratulate them for being active citizens, participating in their community and contributing to future planning.

Anyone wishing to view or comment on the draft plan of management for Boronia Park can visit Council’s website or Council offices to comment before 4pm December 11.

Heritage listing houses debate Dear Sir, Heritage-listed houses and Conservation Areas are good for the hip pocket.

By now most residents are aware of the City of Ryde’s Heritage Review 2019, underway at the moment.

There has been an inordinate amount of hysteria associated with the review and I would just like to set one record straight – succinctly and honestly.

While some have claimed individual residential price losses of $500,000 – nothing could be further from the truth.

There have been studies undertaken by the ACT

Government, Australian Government Productivity Commission, Heritage Victoria, and various councils around Australia, that have all come to the same conclusion: heritagelisted houses and houses in conservation areas either maintain value with non-listed houses in their area or increase in value beyond that of their nonlisted neighbours.

It is as simple as that.

I know some don’t like to hear about real data that doesn’t support their emotional response to heritage listing – but it is there and it is corroborated study after study.

I ask those running a negative campaign against the City of Ryde’s Heritage Review 2019 to stick to the facts – we will not always agree, but please, can we keep our opinions informed?

Give Murray water back to farmers Dear Sir, The NSW Government must take Deputy Premier John Barilaro’s recommendation on the Murray Darling Basin Plan and ”rip the bloody thing up”!

When government gets into the business of business, people suffer.

The Murray Darling Basin Plan inserts the government into the water trading market.

But rather than operating like the farmers sending the water where it is most needed, the Murray Darling Basin Authority wastes 70 percent of the water on unnecessary environmental projects.

Mr Barolaro said it well when he encouraged the NSW government to put people before the environment. But in the case of the MDBA, they aren’t even helping the environment.

The Authority has caused problematic floods, with water farmers desperately need.

Most of us know that if you over-water a succulent, it dies.

But the MDBA fails to understand the same goes for the bush. The Murray Darling Basin Plan has disrupted both the water economy and the natural ecosystem.

The MDBA cost taxpayers $13 billion to fund.

NSW has been forced to cart water to dried up towns at great expense to the taxpayer.

The cost to the agricultural industry is astronomical, but the solution is simple. Cut all funding to the MDBA and give water rights back to the states and to the farmers.

Few people understand the land as well as the farmers who have scratched out of living in the dirt for generations.

NSW pollies would be wise to take water out of the hands of MDBA bureaucrats and give it back to the experts.

Summer football popular with young Dear Sir, We are now a few weeks into Summer Football (soccer) where mostly kids with their $100 active kids vouchers can play in teams 5 aside on small sided fields (about a quarter of the size of a regular soccer field) and played after school on week-days.

It is more about fun and development than competitive soccer.

It doesn’t take much to lay out a small-sized field – some plastic cones to show the field and some land (whether covered with synthetics, grass or even dirt).

It’s sort of popular, though attracting a fraction of the players that winter soccer gets.

Having started in the area at Christie Park (Macquarie Park) within a few years it has expanded out to Pidding Park (Ryde), Morrison Bay Park (Putney), ELS Hall (North Ryde), West Epping and more.

The problem for these many locations is getting enough players of the right age categories so 9 year olds don’t have to face teams of 12 year olds.

Given the ease with which any field can be laid out for small sided soccer I wonder why Ryde Council is still running on out-dated plans to spend millions at Christie Park on such small fields (misnamed “futsal” by Council) where the need has waned (due to the game’s take-up at other fields) and a few plastic cones meets the need.

We have been delighted to have the use of the new piano, and the additional sound equipment, which has greatly improved the quality and enjoyment of our choir’s musical experience.

We are Sydney’s only dementia-friendly choir and singing greatly enhances the quality of life of many of our members who are living with dementia, and of their families.

We wondered if a member of your staff might be interested in coming to one of our rehearsals and taking some pictures of our members with the new instrument.

I feel sure one of the local Councillors would also be happy to attend, should you decide to visit us.

Humanity Award for OLQP pupil Lara

OUR Lady Queen of Peace School Gladesville student Lara Wisemantel was recognised recently for her compassion, integrity and kindness at a ceremony for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award at the University of Technology Sydney. liLara was nominated by her teacher Nathan Seeto, for her inspiring and compassionate nature.

“Lara has worked tirelessly for many years, creating and embracing awareness around disabilities and differences,” Mr Seeto said.

“She has Cerebral Palsy and has worked at raising money for the CP Alliance by competing in fundraisers such as climbing Mt Kosciuszko and other amazing feats.

“More recently, she has organised a book to be written about what it’s like to be “normal” and has asked her peers to contribute to it. She’s selling the books to raise funds and awareness for Cerebral Palsy.”

The Humanity Award is a national initiative of The Fred Hollows Foundation that acknowledges Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by demonstrating humanitarian values towards others.

Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation, Gabi Hollows presented 85 students from across the state with their certificates before announcing Zara Matthews of St Philip’s Christian College, Gosford, as the 2019 NSW Junior Ambassador to The Foundation.

Gabi said the Award highlights inspirational students making a positive difference in their communities.

“Fred would have been incredibly proud of the contribution these students are making to society and of The Foundation for recognising and encouraging them to help others, no matter how big or small their actions,” she said.

Councillors opposing proposed RMS signs at Hunters Hill Village overpass

TWO massive LED signs could be erected at the overpass near the Hunters Hill Village shopping precinct, local councillors warn.

Last week’s Hunters Hill Council meeting tabled a motion by Liberal councillors Ben Collins and Zac Miles to investigate revenue raising opportunities from council endorsement of the proposed Roads and Maritime Service signs but other councillors were aghast at this.

“This is unacceptable and I think the council must object very strongly,” Clr Ross Williams said.

“To put up 12 metre signs changing 24 hours a day is contrary to what Hunters Hill is about and dare I say, could cause safety issues.”

Deputy Mayor Jim Sanderson agreed.

“My research shows there will be no benefit to the people of Hunters Hill and is inappropriate in a heritage conservation area.”

The Council is not opposed to advertising on the overpass and allows community groups and

schools to erect banners there.

The RMS has powers to override council objections should it deem the signs are necessary for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

But local heritage expert Dr Alister Sharp told the council meeting that he regards such signs a revenue raising advertising opportunity for the RMS , not a road safety measure.

“There were only two crashes, one a minor one and a flashing billboard will only make safety worse,” he said.

“The benefit is to RMS revenue, not to Hunters Hill.”

Despite these concerns, Clr Collins argued that there could be a benefit to Hunters Hill if the RMS could be pursued to fund local projects from any revenue generated by the signs.

“The state government could get over a million dollars a year and

we will get none of it because we did not want to engage with the RMS to see if it is possible,” he said.

“If they say no, then we should rally against it but for now let us see if we can get in on this.”

Councillor Collins said this RMS money could be used to replace fencing at the on and off ramps at the overpass, fund public art and maintain the landscape and trees in the area.

“We should write to our local MP Anthony Roberts requesting the state government consider enter into an agreement to share a portion of revenue for the use of the overpass for advertising,” he said.

Local shoppers told The Weekly Times it would be a better safety option for the RMS to have smaller signs at the overpass – activated during school zone times – to warn motorists of significant

numbers of students from Hunters Hill High School, St Joseph’s College and Marist Sisters (Woolwich) crossing local roads and congregating at the bus stop next to the Hunters Hill Hotel.

They also identified the major safety hazard as being “afternoon sun glare” for motorists travelling east to west from Hunters Hill through the overpass.

In other road related news, Hunters Hill Council staff will investigate options to make Prince Edward Street (northbound) in Gladesville a “residents only” access road as well as investigate the possible closure of Tarban Street to northbound traffic.

The proposals are part of a wider council initiative to stop “rat runs” to Pittwater Road.

A concern is that Cowell Street could be increasing used as a rat run to Pittwater Road.

Eden Gardens has hosted St Edmund’s school at the Eden Unearthed exhibition for a

very special curator’s tour.

St Edmond’s student Luca Weber has been involved for the past few months making Braille signs for the 42 installations for the environmental art exhibition.

The school has been coming to Eden Gardens for seven years on a regular basis, doing work experience in the gardens and retail area.

Eden Gardens is enormously proud to have a garden which is so accessible and have deliberately kept this in mind with the installations.

Many are wheelchair accessible, others brightly coloured, tactile, and even some with spinning and sound components to appeal to everyone.

This year they also included an accessibility award, which was

sponsored by Royal Rehab, to award an artist for their work that was engaging and inclusive.

Claire Boyle, the Clinical Horticultural Therapist, selected Alison Thompson’s work The Magic of the Garden, for the ease in which it engages all the senses.

“To be able to share these installations with even more people, thanks to Luca’s work, is a real thrill and adds yet another layer of connection with the wider community” she said.

Community Development Manager Anna Ainsworth was so inspired she has also agreed for Luca to create a Braille version of our new summer menu at The Dragonfly Caf,.

And they even do fish and chips there… if you’re still wanting to ‘taste the seaside’.

Arcadian Artists 2019 Exhibition and Art Trail

SOME of the finest creative talent will be on display at the 29th annual Arcadian Artists Trail to be staged this Saturday November 9 and Sunday November 10.

If you have ever wondered how artists do their work, or what their studios look like, now is the opportunity to take a sneak peek.

Once a year the Artists open their studios for people to visit and this year is no exception.

There are eight rural properties to enjoy with 55 artists showing their talents.

Schools unite as young leaders reveal plans for change

FIVE local schools joined forces at West Ryde Public School last Thursday to empower students to become leaders.

Students from West Ryde Public School, Marsden High School, Meadowbank Public School, Melrose Park Public School and Ermington Public school took part in the leadership and shared project ideas.

West Ryde Public School Deputy Principal Natalie Devlin told The Weekly Times the theme of the event was one per cent change makes a 100 per cent difference. “ Throughout the year each school team has developed a change idea and created a project to make a small yet significant difference within their school.”

“The leadership journey for each participant and

school group has been both introspective and collaborative and provided opportunities to explore how to become change agents in their schools and develop their leadership capacity as senior figures in their communities.”

The Deputy Principal said the project has fostered and enabled strong friendships and partnerships to develop across the learning alliance and helped to build strong and sustainable connections between our schools.

“The project workshops have also provided students with the chance to partake in team building exercises, while also exploring their creativity

and building their critical thinking skills in a 21st Century world.

“The project also reinforced the concept of ‘community in various ways.

“Any great community builds and nurtures mutually strong ties with neighbours and it is this concept that has enabled students to explore, understand and experience real and beneficial change.”

She said the students have encountered many successes, failures and challenges enabling them to develop their capacity as school leaders.

The City of Ryde was represented by Clr Roy Maggio who said he hoped the schools would

share their ideas.

“I look forward to other schools taking up the challenge, which is all about collaberation.”

Amelia from Meadowbank Public School was among student leaders to take up an environmental theme.

“Our school idea is how to reduce rubbish in the playground and gets everyone in the school to play a part.”

For Tadi from Marsden High the project has inspired her to use technology in the playground.

“We want to put up TV screens to get messages across to students, everything from safety messages to instructions to students sitting the HSC who might miss roll call

messages.”

Logan from Melrose Park said his school has been inspired to create a scarecrow from recycled materials.

“We’ve called our scarecrow Jeff and his job is to keep birds away from our school garden.”

Ermington students are planting native trees.

“All our school classes have been plating trees and this is our contribution to do something about climate change,” he said.

Natalie Devlin thanked all students and their teachers.

“We look forward to the future as an alliance of schools and encouraging students to propose change.”

Community grants now available to Parramatta’s non-profit groups LOCAL community groups are invited to apply for a share of half a million dollars in funding through City of Parramatta Council’s 2020 Community Grants program.

The grants range from $5,000 to $25,000 across five categories and will support community services and activities that enhance the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of people in the Parramatta Local Government Area.

“Community organisations are the lifeblood of our City and Council is very proud to support these dedicated groups through our generous and long-standing Community Grants program,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

Festival reveals the ghosts of Parramatta’s past

THE GHOSTS of Parramatta’s past came to life for Halloween as part of the weekend’s Foundation Festival.

An annual event, the three day festival was held at 10 historically significant locations in the Parramatta area and included a Halloween festival.

This festival included a Halloween Ghost Tour at Old Government House in Parramatta Park where participants explored the 214-year-old Georgian mansion by candlelight and heard about ghostly encounters experienced there. “ The Governors and their households left Parramatta in 1855, but their presence still haunts Old Government House,” the Friends of Old Government House said.

“Visitors can now revisit the scene of a tragic accident and witness places within the house where psychics, guides and visitors have experienced ghostly encounters.”

On Saturday there was a guided tour of Parramatta’s historic cemeteries.

“Foundation Festival is a great opportunity for both locals and visitors to learn about and celebrate Parramatta’s rich heritage,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

“Parramatta has many incredible stories to tell.

“This festival highlights a small selection of these unique tales, enabling the current generations to get an eye-opening glimpse into the past.”

On the previous Friday visitors learned about the Darug people’s connection to the land at the Warami Mittigar Aboriginal Twilight Cultural Walk.

They also learned about historical figure John Macarthur through a theatrical re-enactment at Hambledon Cottage.

The main Foundation Day event was held in the North Parramatta Heritage Precinct on Sunday.

The annual Foundation Day celebration is a free event.

Western Sydney notfor-profit organisation Hills Community Aid received a $10,000 City of Parramatta Annual Community Capacity Building Grant in March 2019.

It used the grant to establish Cafe Connect, which provides a 10-week barista training program for vulnerable members of

the local community.

“Hills Community Aid is passionate about supporting disadvantaged people in Western Sydney, helping them overcome barriers to employment and build connections with the community through various programs,” Hills Community Aid Community Engagement Coordinator Anita Fisher said.

“We are grateful to City of Parramatta Council for the $10,000 Capacity Building Grant so we could set up our Cafe Connect training program. “ It has been an incredible stepping stone for so many of our graduates and provided them with opportunities to build confidence and skills.

“It Is the best outcome we could ever ask for.”

The Connect Cafe barista training program used a City of Parramatta grant to skill up people searching for jobs.

Initiated by the former Parramatta City Council in 2007, the Community Grants program has provided significant support to a diverse range of community organisations, volunteer groups,

sporting clubs, social enterprises, creative producers and heritage organisations.

Applications for the 2020 Community Grants program close at 9am on Monday, December 9.

Council’s Community Capacity Building team will host information sessions and grant writing workshops in the Parramatta CBD and neighbourhood centres during the application period.

Our talented local performers in West Ryde Plaza shows

EMERGING singer and guitar player Ange Rose will be among the talented locals who will perform in West Ryde Plaza this summer as part of a council sponsored entertainment program.

Ange Rose is from West Ryde and told The Weekly Times she is thrilled to have an opportunity to perform before a local audience.

“I love performing and I hope to encourage people to sit, relax and listen to my songs and perhaps even get up and dance,” she said.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale and Clr Penny Pedersen were at the Plaza with her on Friday where the Mayor said these regular Friday performances are the perfect way to kick off the weekend in West Ryde.

“The West Ryde Summer Series will activate the new West Ryde Plaza and help stimulate the local night time economy,” he said.

“Not only will it breathe life into West Ryde town centre, but will also give a new platform for budding local musicians to showcase their enormous talents.

“Each event that will make up the West Ryde Summer Series will be held between 4pm and 8pm, so people can pop down, enjoy some fantastic entertainment and then at the end head to one of the fantastic local restaurants located in the area.”

The Mayor said the Summer Series responds to community requests for entertainment in West Ryde.

“The community asked Council to provide more fun and exciting entertainment options for everyone to enjoy and the West Ryde Summer Series fits that bill perfectly.”

The West Ryde Summer Series will take place at West Ryde Plaza on the third Friday afternoon of every month between November and January, with the series beginning on Friday November 15.

Each event will showcase

four local musicians and feature a licensed bar as well as a food vendor.

Mayor,Laxale, said the West Ryde Summer Series is being held as a three month trial to help gauge whether there is interest within the community to continue staging similar events at West Ryde Plaza in the future.

“Earlier this year, the City of Ryde completed the upgrade of the West Ryde Plaza which included the installation of a new shade structure, a new play area for children, public seating and free public Wi-Fi,” he said.

“The upgrades also retained an open paved area to allow for activities such as the West Ryde Summer Series to take place. ““There will be an opportunity for the public to provide their feedback on the series after the completion of the trial.”

The West Ryde Chamber of Commerce, Meadowbank West Ryde Progress Association and Neighbourhood Watch Ryde recently undertook a survey of the 404 local businesses within the West Ryde Precinct and found that 385 local workers said they would use of this parking on a medium to longterm basis.

They say that with parking scarce in West Ryde this “sorely underutilised” carpark should be used by local business staff, many of whom have to walk several blocks to get to work due each day.

They want at least 12 car parking spots to be immediately made available but talks with Coles have got nowhere.

“Numerous representations have been made to both Coles, councillors and council for the above spaces to be better utilised, for years, to no avail,” Clr Purcell said.

“Surely there is a willingness

from Coles and Wilson Parking to make better use of these car spaces?

“It is a responsible course of action to utilise this parking area for financial recoupment, general night-time safety and basic amenity for local workers.

“To do otherwise constitutes a significant opportunity cost to both the community and Council.”

He said he will personally drive the issue forward in coming days.

“For too long, we have had valuable parking spaces going underutilised.

“Shopkeepers, their staff, shoppers and local residents would all benefit from Coles and Wilsons Parking working with the City of Ryde to produce a better outcome.

“It is a business decision that would make a better financial use of the car spaces and most importantly go some way

to alleviate parking stress In West Ryde.”

The local business groups expressed their confidence in Clr Purcell and he acknowleged their support.

“The West Ryde Chamber of Commerce, the Meadowbank West Ryde Progress Association and Neighbourhood Watch Ryde should be congratulated on their ongoing efforts to get improved conditions throughout the West Ryde business district.”

Parramatta River masterplan endorsed by Council The City of Ryde has shown its commitment to improving the health of the iconic Parramatta River, by endorsing the Parramatta River Masterplan.

Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we mark Remembrance Day because it was at this time and date in 1918 that the guns fell silent on the Western Front, officially ending the First World War. The war came at a great cost for Australia, with more than 60,000 service men and women never returning home, from the 416,000 who enlisted.

We pay tribute to those who have proudly served our nation in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Australian Air League Ryde Squadron mark 82nd anniversary

THE Australian Air League will be holding a Marching Parade on Sunday November 17 in North Ryde.

Parade will commence from the roundabout at the Smalls Road and Bridge Road intersection at 1pm and will finish in Santa Rosa Park.

The Australian Air League is a non-profit youth group that teaches cadets between the ages of 8 and 18 and officers from 18 years and above about the aviation industry.

Members meet weekly to engage in education programs delivered in a simple and digestible manner that allows even the youngest cadets to learn about flying and how aeroplanes work.

These members also learn various marching drills in the League, which provides an opportunity for them to develop leadership skills and discipline.

Certain larger squadrons also operate marching bands, some of which have seen success on an international

stage.

The Australian Air League was founded in 1934 with its first squadron opening in Manly.

It now operates dozens of squadrons across NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

The NSW Group also boasts its own air base in Camden where it teaches cadets to fly.

The most dedicated cadets are able to start flying solo by the age of 15 and obtain a recreational pilot’s licence by 16.

Parade on Sunday November 17 will be in celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the Australian Air League’s Ryde Squadron.

Ryde Squadron has been an integral part of the Ryde community for many years, having made its mark at events such as the West Ryde Easter Parade, Granny Smith Festival and North Ryde RSL ANZAC Day services.

The section of Bridge

Road from the Smalls Road roundabout uptil Santa Rosa Park will be closed off on November 17 between 12:45pm and 1:30pm.

The adjacent section of Flinders Road will also be closed off during this time.

Police traffic controllers will be blocking off access to this section of Bridge Road at this time.

Access to the Santa Rosa Park carpark off Bridge Road will also be closed for the day.

Santa Rosa Park itself will remain open, but the oval will be unavailable for use to the public from 1pm until approximately 3pm.

The parade will also pass through the footpath between the Bridge Road entrance of the park and the grounds sometime between 1pm and 1:30pm.

Ryde Squadron invites members of the public to attend the parade, where they will be able to see the squadron and the League

on full display.

The parade will feature a large marching band as well as other squadrons in the district including Epping RSL, Hornsby RSL and Canterbury.

Ryde Squadron will also be running a barbecue and various amusements at the conclusion of the parade.

The Ryde Squadron meets every Thursday during the school term between 7:15pm and 9:30pm in the Santa Rosa Park Hall.

It currently has 32 members, and is actively accepting new recruits.

WITH 1.5 million Australians involved in caring for someone with dementia, chances are you know someone with the disease or are a carer yourself.

A carer of a person with dementia can be a spouse, sibling, child, friend or even a concerned neighbour. What they share in common is that at times, the responsibility can feel overwhelming. Often, carers find themselves neglecting their own health while focussing on supporting someone else. Many carers share that they waited too long to ask for help.

Caregivers are also at risk of becoming socially isolated. Sometimes this happens due to physical tiredness; a tendency not to bother going out; or feeling unable to leave the person they care for alone at home.

However, carers can also become isolated when others don’t understand their situation, or don’t know the best way to provide support. Consequently they leave the carer alone.

“To provide the best possible care, it’s important to know what’s available, what’s the latest treatment, and how to best enable the person with dementia,” suggests A/Prof Kathryn Goozee, CEO KaRa Institute for Neurological Diseases (KaRa MINDS).

“Maintaining friendships and developing new ones are important for building coping strategies.

Research tells us that for every person who has dementia, three people are needed to provide care.

While you may be the only carer in a practical sense, you can certainly look for other people who can be your virtual backup. It

may only be a quick chat, a coffee, or even sharing a mutual hobby or interest, but this is essential to build your emotional reserve.”

Even in the early stages of dementia, caregivers should consider gathering a support network of family and friends they can rely on for assistance when needed. It’s also helpful to connect with other carers who understand and empathise because of their lived experience.

the end of life. The diagnosis is only the first step.

Sadly, many people in Australia remain undiagnosed, due to either fear of seeking a diagnosis or the impression that there is no treatment.

An early diagnosis is an important step before receiving medication that may slow the progression of symptoms. Furthermore, it’s possible that the person with dementia may be eligible for a clinical trial, as only then can they get access to treatments not yet broadly available.

Golden memories for Leo and Bernadette

LONG established local insurance broker Leo Driessen and wife Bernadette celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last Thursday. The couple met at a Catholic Youth Organisation dance in Mosman in 1966 and were married in St Mary’s Catholic Church North Sydney on October 31, 1969. They purchased their first home in North Ryde in 1970 and moved to their current home in Marsfield in 1987. Both of them are still working in their own insurance broking business in North Ryde - Leo having chalked up over 50 years service - which makes them true locals. Leo and Bernadette have two children - one son Matthew and a daughter Angela, who also works in the family business and is the next generation after three generations of insurance brokers that span over 100 years. The couple have three grandchildren - Maddison 22, Taylor 20 and Olivia 13.

They love playing lawn bowls, enjoy Rotary fellowship and knitting for the community.

Sharp Sky Blues hammer Jets

SYDNEY FC stretched an impressive unbeaten home record against Newcastle Jets to ten games with a comfortable 4-1 victory at Leichhardt Oval last Friday night - providing the reigning champions with a brief return to the top of the A-League ladder.

By the end of round 4 last Sunday, wins by Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne City - both now on 10 points - pushed the Sky Blues, on nine points, into third spot.

Sydney’s encounter with the Jets sprung into life from the first whistle with a goal-a-piece in the first ten minutes.

Milos Ninkovic’s sublime finish from Luke Brattan’s superb cross was followed by Matthew Millar’s bullet header from a wide free-kick.

Brattan’s distribution throughout the midfield was pinpoint and Adam

Le Fondre’s weaving runs around the Jets backline were clinical as he put the Sky Blues ahead just before the break finishing a low cross from Rhyan Grant.

The second-half started quite like the first as Sydney FC dominated the ball and field position.

Ryan McGowan’s volley made it three while Kosta Barbarouses claimed his first goal in the Sky Blue with a solo classic.

Trent Buhagiar made his long-awaited A-League debut for the Sky Blues, exciting both fans and coaching staff with an excellent chance to open his

account for the season, when he latched onto Anthony Caceres’ through ball, only for his shot to roll straight to Jets keeper Glen Moss.

After a quality secondhalf performance, Sydney FC surged to their third win of the season and will enjoy it with a bye round this week.

“I was very pleased with the boys backing up from last week - we turned in another solid performance, dominated the game and got the result,” Sydney FC coach Steve Corica said post match.

“The goals were some stunning play and we’ve

definitely got a lot of goals in us, which is very pleasing. To put on another good performance with four goals is great.”

The Sky Blues have a ‘bye’ round this weekend providing some valuable recovery time before the following week’s ‘Big Blue’ home encounter with Melbourne Victory at Jubilee Oval.

“We’ve got the bye this week, the boys deserve a few days off to freshen up and prepare for the ‘Big Blue’. We’ll work hard next week in training and start preparing for the Melbourne clash,” Corica said.

Pirates succumb to Rangers in the gloom

RANGERS recorded a dramatic victory over a depleted Hunters Hill X1 in City & Suburban Cricket Association action last Sunday at Jubilee Oval Glebe.

A week of attrition and a no show meant the Pirates took the field with only eight players which was compounded by the loss of the toss.

The skies looked ominous and the Rangers obviously wanted to take advantage of the short numbers - opting to bat first in the inclement weather.

With very few mistakes in the field the Hillies supported their bowlers but three rain interruptions brought about a reduction in overs per side to 24.

Rangers posted 3-140 with Pirates’ stalwart Manish Misra the

pick of the Hunters Hill bowlers with 2-37 off seven overs, supported by fellow seamer Alex Miller who conceded 30 runs off his seven overs.

James Woods returned to bowling duties and was tidy with 0-16 of his three while Sumer Hingorani claimed 1-30 off five.

Rodney Bourgonjen and Marco Angelini pulled off some great saves in the covers and gully respectfully to further frustrate the Rangers.

After yet another quick shower the Pirates started their run chase.

Rangers paceman Sean Wright was sharp and accurate and after 17 overs the Hunters Hill team were six down and nowhere near the target.

Opening bat Julian Musket top scored with 25 and the Pirates tried valiantly to hold on for a draw.

With the light fading and rain threatening, Angelini was trapped LBW to give the Rangers victory in the 22nd over.

So close, but a gutsy effort from the Pirates - showing tons of character given the conditions and reduced personnel.

England Test hopeful Gubbins joins Tigers

SYDNEY Cricket Club have pulled off a major coup by securing the services of classy English batsman Nick Gubbins (pictured).

The 25 year old Middlesex opener made his debut last Saturday in the Tigers’ NSW Premier Cricket first grade fixture against Western Suburbs at Drummoyne Oval and has signed on for a four month stint down under.

Recommended to the club by his Middlesex team mate Stephen Eskinazi, the talented Gubbins has been on England’s Test radar since his prolific run scoring for the 2016 County Championship winners.

Eskinazi, who amassed 660 runs at an average of 55 in his debut stint with Sydney Cricket Club last summer that included an unbeaten 179, is set to reunite with Gubbins at the Drummoyne-based Tigers during December.

A stylish top order batsman and crafty leg spinner, Gubbins claimed 1-27 off seven overs as Sydney rolled Wests for 183 in opening day action.

The following day he blasted an unbeaten 31 off 14 balls in Sydney’s narrow loss to Sutherland in a rain affected Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup clash at Drummoyne.

Gubbins gets another opportunity to show his wares with the bat when the Tigers resume at 0-66 this Saturday against Wests in the box seat with Suffan Hassan (35 not out) and Justin Mosca (24 not out) at the crease.

Sydney paceman Nic Bills was again the chief destroyer - bagging 5-52 off 18 overs as the Magpies succumbed to the Tigers’ array of quicks with the capable Alex Glendenning (2-30 off 13 overs) and young gun Hugh Sherriff (2-39 off ten) lending valuable support.

The Tigers suffered a blow midweek when star spinner Ben Manenti sprained ankle ligaments in a training mishap.

Wests lost openers Joshua Clarke (0) and Callum Hotham (16) with the score on 27 before number three Nick Cutler (52) and James Psarakis (40) added 72 runs for the third wicket.

With the rampaging Bills creating havoc, the visitors were soon reeling at 6-131.

A fine knock of 35 by Adrian Isherwood and a gritty seventh wicket union of 32 by Ivan Thomas (17 not out) and keeper Sam McMahon (15) gave Wests some respectability.

Cutler’s majestic half century featured eight boundaries and proved the cornerstone of the Magpies’ innings.

MEANWHILE former Test ace Shane Watson was in vintage form for Sutherland in a Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup showdown with the Tigers last Sunday.

In a rain-marred match the Sharks posted 5-164 from 16.4 overs with Watson smashing two sixes and seven boundaries in a whirlwind knock of 47 off 23 balls with top contributions also from Chris Williams (48) and Tom Doyle (42).

Alex Glendenning was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-31.

State roles for ERNA Hawks netball duo

EASTWOOD-Ryde Hawks’ NSW Netball Premier League championship-winning coach Jenni Wright and team manager Diane Bills have been rewarded with State representative roles.

Wright and Bills have been appointed Head Coach and manager of the NSW 19/Under team for the 2020 National Netball Championships to be staged in Hobart.

The pair helped mastermind the Hawks’ first-ever NSW Netball Premier League Opens championship title in September when Eastwood Ryde trounced Central Coast Heart 68-44 in the 2019 Grand Final at Netball Central in Homebush.

The National Championships are a chance for the brightest young talent in Australian netball to represent their state or territory.

They are also a crucial pathway opportunity, and a chance to get national exposure and catch the eye of Netball Australia selec-

tors.

Wright will be assisted in her role by former National League player Alison Tucker-Munro (Randwick), with Virginia Welsh (Manly Warringah) on board as an apprentice coach and Di Bills fulfilling the role of team manager.

In the 17/U setup, head coach Amber Cross (Wyong District) will be assisted by Kath Tetley (Baulkham-Hills Shire), with Kirstie Fuller (Gunnedah) working as an apprentice coach, and Jenny Gage-Traill (Northern Suburbs) named team manager.

Netball NSW State Pathways Manager Margaret Hamley said she was delighted to have both coaching teams in place for a big year ahead.

“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone appointed in what is a proud moment for all concerned,” she said.

“These coaches have come along the Netball NSW pathway and both Jenni and Amber are excited to have very good teams behind them.

“This year NSW brought back silver in both the 17s and 19s competitions and in 2020 we’ll be looking to take that final step and bring gold back to the state.”

The Nationals will be held from April 18-23 at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre with the winners of both the 17/U and 19/U Divisions crowned in Gold Medal matches on the last day of play.

Benji & Madge star in Test victory!

Tigers superstar Benji Marshall and coach Madge Maguire conspired to lead the Kiwis to an upset win over the Poms in last weekend’s rugby league international Test in Kiwiland.

The winning combination of Benji and Madge will be repeated in the new year when they lead the Tigers to 2020 NRL Premiership honours.

Maguire had the Kiwis pumped up for a super effort and they responded with a gutsy performance to go one up in the two Tests series.

Skipper Benji did the Kiwis proud with another clever display against the Poms and is now gearing up for an equally good show against the Poms in Christchurch.

Meanwhile the Ti-

gers are having few days break from training before resuming up to Christmas and into the new year.

Again in the new season we only have three games at Australia’s best footy ground Leichhardt Oval HQ with first Sunday March 22 hosting the Frights followed by the Bunnies Sunday May 17.
