Hunters Hill Theatre’s new play Goodbye, Mrs Blore

Two TWT readers can win double passes to a performance of Hunters Hill Theatre’s new production Goodbye, Mrs Blore on Friday August 23 and Saturday August 24 in Hunters Hill Town Hall, 22 Alexandra Street, at 7.30pm.

In 1964, a young doctor Julia Lewis following in her father’s footsteps as a GP and Kelly Blore, a suburban housewife who is committed to raising her family and who has her own unique view of the world, meet.

What might be a usual Doctor patient relationship becomes an unusual and binding friendship.

The play spans 27 years, starting unexpectedly in Julia’s office and concluding at what becomes their special place.

Best characterised as an odd couple, there’s little hint of friendship in that first encounter but this changes as time goes on and the two form a close union that sees them share many of the key events in their lives.

The play features Liz Lynch in the title role of Mrs Blore.

Last seen in Hunters Hill Theatre’s production of Calendar Girls, Liz has also appeared in Cosi, Murdered To Death and Great Expectations.

Prue Foxe plays Dr Julia Lewis who was recently seen in Play On and Death on the Nile.

The play is written by Australian author Robert Hewett who began his career in the theatre as an actor in Melbourne.

Other plays include the multi award winning Gulls, The Adman, The Blonde, The Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead, Just One Last Dance and the cabaret Taught By Experts.

Directed by Casey MoonWottan who has directed Hunters Hill Theatre productions of Its My Party and Proof, this play is guaranteed to make you laugh and shed a tear as you share this pair’s unique journey.

Goodbye Mrs Blore is playing from August 23 to September 1.

Ryde Hunters Hill Hockey Club Family Day success

NSW Sports Minister John Sidoti tosses the coin before the Sydney Mens Hockey Premier League first grade clash between Ryde Hunters Hill and Gordon-North Sydney during the 11th annual Family Day Cup festivities last Saturday at Keith Thompson Hockey Centre.

Mr Sidoti is flanked by Ryde-Hunters Hill skipper and talented midfielder Billy Shaw and GNS captain Nick Johnston. Ryde Hunters Hill retained the Family Day Cup after posting an 8-2 victory in the men’s top grade encounter and 2-1 triumph in the women’s first grade fixture.

It was the first time in many a year that Ryde-Hunters Hill had won both the men’s and women’s Premier League first grade clashes on the day.

Three Weeks In Spring Musical

Courtney plays the lead role of Hannah Monash in the show that tells the story of Simpson and his Donkey, Colonel John Monash, the ANZACs, and the loved ones they left behind, through the eyes of war correspondent C.E.W Bean.

The talented actor has a personal connection with the show.

“My Grandad was a soldier in WWII, and his father in WWI, so it has all the more meaning to be able to perform in this show,” she revealed.

The show runs until August 17, with musical direction by Zara Stanton, direction by Lina Aubrecht and a per cent of ticket sales will go to The Anzac Foundation.

BARRY COLLINS (pictured) a former TWT Team member has passed away aged 61.

His Memorial Service was held last Thursday at Vineyard church with welcome and thanks by Peter Smith and words of comfort presented by Pastor John Cannone.

Barry was an expert technician and expert photographer and will long be remembered for his cheerful and helpful disposition at all times.

Mourners were informed that Barry was an organ donor and both his kidneys had been successfully transplanted into two long suffering patients – one had been on dialysis for ten years and the other six years. Barry had been a charity worker for many years. Rest in Peace Barry. *** BRUCE LYON of real estate and pioneer development fame has passed away, aged 86, at home under the devoted care of his beloved Bettena.

Bruce lived life to the full and built a substantial empire especially in the north west metro area centred on Epping and remained at the helm until the day he died.

He is survived by his three beautiful daughters Kaye, Debbie and Mandy, thirteen grandchilden and nine great grandchil-

dren.

His funeral is today, Wednesday August 7 at 10.30am at Sacred Heart Church, Cardinal Street, Mosman. Rest in Peace Bruce. You will be sadly missed by many.

Letters to the Editor Shoppers frenzy at Eastwood

$Billions wasted on junk water science

Dear Sir,

On several recent Sunday mornings I have been appalled to witness the behaviour of certain members of the community at Woolworths store in the Eastwood Centre.

At around 8am between 20 and 30 individuals assemble outside the store to purchase baby milk formula tins.

As soon as the doors are open, there is a frenzied dash into the store to clear the shelves of the formula.

In order to overcome the restrictions imposed by the store as to the number of tins that can be purchased by individuals, large trolleys are placed immediately outside the store entrance and relays of people literally run into the store while others stay in charge of the trolleys which are topped up on repeated runs until the trolley is full (probably 10 to 12 tins are placed in plastic bags within the trolley).

The full trolleys are then taken to fill up the boots of parked cars. Some attempt is taken to disguise the contents of the trolleys by covering them with coats and it was noticeable that several people were anxious not to be identified by wearing face masks and hoodies.

I felt very sorry for a young member of Woolworths’ staff who pleaded with the perpetrators to move the trolley as there was clearly an accident risk to other shoppers particularly due to the pushing and barging going on. Needless to say, the shop assistant’s pleas were largely ignored.

Despite the chaos, it is obvious that this practice is well organised and systemic.

It is not hard to imagine that this produce is taken to a central collection point to eventually be shipped over to China where it is in high demand.

I tried to take a photo of one of the trolleys only to be confronted by a woman who angrily screamed “no photo” and tried to grab my mobile phone.

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA) condemns the misuse of $1.5 billion in taxpayers’ funds to purchase 450GL of water from farmers in the Murray Darling Basin.

The move was announced

by Federal Water Minister David Littleproud and comes on top of billions already spent to buy up 2,750GL for the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder.

This harebrained plan is a waste of hardworking taxpayers’ money that will only exacerbate the water shortages and high water prices which continue to economically and culturally devastate regional Australia.

We are also deeply concerned that the entire $13 billion Murray Darling Basin Plan may be based on bad science, as revealed by Professor Peter Gell in his peer-reviewed report published by the CSIRO. We agree with Federal Nationals Party Whip Damian Drum, who noted on Sky News the Murray Darling Basin Authority’s erroneous idea that the lower lakes of Alexandrina and Albert have always been fresh.

It is unconscionable that billions of taxpayers’ dollars might have been spent on a plan based on junk science, and that this plan is still being implemented even after its flawed foundations have been revealed, is doubly disturbing.

We therefore call for an immediate end to any spending of taxpayer’s money in pursuit of this plan until such time as the plan has been fully reconsidered and brought into line with the best available science, and are proud to be one of the many advocacy groups who have joined environmentalists and politicians in calling for a royal commission into the Murray Darling Basin plan.

Dear Sir,

My wife and I were both born in Australia, as were two children and four grandchildren.

Our parents were born in Australia as were all of their parents. And some ancestors go back much further in this land.

I feel rage every time I have to sit through another patronising “welcome to country” charade, designed to make me feel an intruder in my own land.

Indigenous history on this continent is the same as our family story – it just goes back a bit further.

The first aboriginals probably walked here over a land bridge and Europeans came later in sailing clippers.

All caused displacement of prior inhabitants. They brought dingos which are now “protected” – we brought cattle, sheep, horses and ploughs which are increasingly condemned.

They mined ochre, quartzite and basalt, which are now heritage sites – but our coal mines are widely condemned.

They brought spears and boomerangs – we brought guns and swords.

Racial referenda, indigenous “Welcomes”, talk of Treaties and special land rights for some Australians just create and maintain division.

How long before we are one people with the same rights and responsibilities?

Two centuries is surely time enough?

CPAC is proud to bring Raheem Kassam to Australia and rejects Senator Keneally’s embarrassing attempt to shut down political opponents.

Australia is a country with a long history of free speech, something authoritarian hard left opponents such as Senator Keneally seek to change simply because they sometimes do not like what their opponents might say.

Ms Keneally cast aspersions on other speakers and attendees of CPAC including Senator Amanda Stoker and Craig Kelly MP, by using the underhanded tactic of “guilt by association”.

The implication of her attack is that speaking at the same event as those she basely accuses of racism, is an endorsement of such views. Ms Keneally went so far as to describe the CPAC event as a “talkfest of hate,” a ludicrous accusation that merely makes use of the kind of language that is used to shut down healthy debate – a fundamental component of a liberal democracy and a free society.

She also describes the speaker list as a “who’s who of right-wing extremism” - a claim that is objectively false.

CPAC organisers, the nonprofit LibertyWorks and the American Conservative Union, view these accusations as a clear indication that CPAC Australia conference is viewed by some as a threat to Ms Keneally’s handlers in the Labor Party.

Hunters Hill Guest Column

A real moment of Light in the Dark ONE OF the most amazing images from the tragic fire at Notre Dame was the gleaming reflection of light from a brass cross in the centre of charcoaled and ash covered ruins.

It reminded me of an experience as a child of walking into an Orthodox Church where the light of a few candles reflected around the room as it bounced off the beautiful icons scattered around the walls.

For me for whom this was foreign, I was immediately captured.

The Priest who was present took some time to explain to me that the icons told “the story of God in pictures”.

For me, it felt like a real moment of light in the dark, a sign of hope when at that moment in my life things felt a bit hopeless.

Like that brass cross I have come to realise that icons reveal something tremendous about light in the darkness.

In times that can often feel quite dark they illuminate for me that we are not alone, nor isolated, but are part of a great story, God’s story.

However, I know that while I view them with a religious eye, that others who don’t share my faith tell me that these works move them also as they see the human struggle and the hopefulness of light entering into darkness.

Organisors said the event was “Celebrating our Municipality, Our Community, History and Heritage” and included dinner, and three guest speakers namely Mayor Clr Mark Bennett on the theme of a “A Stronger Community”, Dr Beverley Sherry on “Australia’s Oldest Garden Suburb” and Caroline Mackaness “Hunters Hill The Future”.

SOCIAL ISOLATION must be urgently addressed to ensure Hunters Hill’s survival as a living and close knit community, Mayor Mark Bennett warned. ”It is social isolation that I draw your attention to this evening and this will be our next public health epidemic,” he said. “it is now impacting upon very young to very old residents here in Hunters Hill.”

Get your Mouth on Track

THE Australian Dental Association (ADA) is urging Australians to “Get your mouth on Track” as its main message during Dental Health Week (August 5-11).

Dr Sushma Patel of Putney Dental Surgery explained that this means people need to: • Brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride.

• Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush.

• Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit sugar intake.

• Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.

Research shows that most people don’t give much thought to how they brush their teeth, beyond squirting on some toothpaste and scrubbing back and forth.

But Dr Patel says: “how you brush your teeth matters a great deal, including how often you brush, how long you brush, the kind of technique and the toothbrush you use are all major influences on the effectiveness of your brushing. Tempting as it is to think that pressing harder on your teeth equals a better clean; the fact is that too much pressure can damage your gums and tooth enamel. If the bristles are wearing out on your toothbrushes well before the three-month mark, you’re pressing too hard.

So, for tips on how to brush effectively, you should ask us at Putney Dental Surgery to demonstrate to you the correct brushing technique.

Dr Patel recommends replacing your brush, whether manual or powered, when either the bristles start to spread apart, or every three

months, whichever comes first.

To get the whole mouth clean you can’t rely on brushing alone to keep your teeth clean as you’re missing nearly half the surface area of your teeth which, not surprisingly, lies between them. For that reason alone, flossing should be an integral part of your oral care routine and never an optional extra.

Dr Patel stressed “by using floss to remove the plaque from between your teeth, you’re helping to prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and halitosis (otherwise known as bad breath) - a considerable amount of upside for just a couple of minutes effort each day.”

There are numerous oral hygiene products available to clean between your teeth; if you have large gaps between your teeth a bottle-brush shaped interdental cleaner is useful, or interdental tips (flexible rubber tips) and irrigators (electrically-powered water-pumping devices) to compliment your flossing regimen.

Everything you eat and drink can have a major effect on the health of your teeth and gums and particularly whether you develop tooth decay; a diet related disease which is caused when the sugars in the food and drinks you eat are taken up by bacteria; these in turn produce the acids that can attack the outer layer of tooth enamel to cause tooth decay To ensure that your diet doesn’t negatively affect your teeth, Dr Patel says

there’s a few key things to keep in mind: Drink lots of water - one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help prevent tooth decay Limit snacking between meals - limit sugary treats to meal times, rather than between meals.

Chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating can prompt your mouth to produce more saliva, which helps neutralise decaycausing acid attacks.

Crime Prevention Plan cracks down on local anti-social behaviour

ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour will be targeted in a crime crackdown announced by the City of Parramatta last week.

The draft crime prevention plan highlights four areas to prevent crime with the aim of making the community safer.

The four areas to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour include improving the look and feel of public spaces in the CBD and neighbourhoods, addressing the needs of identified vulnerable groups as well as increasing a sense of attachment and community involvement in neighbourhoods.

The draft plan also suggests 75 key actions to achieve these aims.

“It combines new and existing initiatives such as improved street lighting, street cleaning, closed circuit television, building and maintaining parks and green spaces, waste and graffiti removal services, development assessments and strategic planning with crime prevention in mind,” Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said.

“It also aims to bring people together by fostering a sense of community and inclusiveness around crime prevention and safety measures.

“Reducing and preventing crime and keeping our community safe are key priorities for the City of Parramatta. Council is seeking community input to build a safer Parramatta for all and invites feedback on the Draft Crime Prevention Plan.

“This plan outlines ways that Council and its partners can continue to contribute to a liveable and safe Parramatta.”

The draft plan acknowledges that communities in Parramatta have diverse needs, expectations and experiences around what crime and safety means to them.

“Through Council’s community services and programs alongside partnerships with other organisations, the plan identifies ways to support diverse groups and vulnerable communities including women, young people, people experiencing homelessness, social housing tenants, people living with disabilities, and the elderly.

We welcome and encourage community feedback on this plan.”

The Draft Crime Prevention Plan 2019-2023 has been developed through initial research and collaborative work with partners, stakeholders and community groups.

Parramatta City Council is now seeking feedback on the draft plan from the wider community, including support for the proposed actions and comments on potential gaps.

The Council will consider suggestions from the community for additional actions to be included in the plan or to become part of other community safety initiatives.

Statement on fire cladding Seventy four buildings in Parramatta have been found to have non-compliant fire cladding.

The buildings were identified as part of an inspection of 174 in an investigation the council has described as a high priority.

The City of Parramatta Council has released an official statement on the investigation this week.

The statement says: “The Council would like to clarify information relating to the issue of non-compliant cladding in its Local Government Area “There have been 174 buildings in the Parramatta LGA reported to have some form of cladding identified.

“Council has undertaken initial site inspections of all 174 buildings as part of its broader investigations, and has contacted all strata managers of identified buildings to inform them of the cladding investigation.

To date, the Council has concluded full investigations of 74 buildings confirming that these buildings are compliant.

“Council is continuing its investigations of the remaining 100 and is prioritising residential buildings as part of this process.

“Of the 100 buildings still under investigation, six were recently found to have the non-compliant cladding installed, and Council is in the process of issuing orders to ensure these buildings are rectified and that they meet the relevant fire safety requirements.

“This is a high priority for Council and it is committed to working with each building strata group and the relevant state agencies on this issue to ensure all matters are resolved as quickly as possible.”

Plant a tree in Parramatta

The City of Parramatta hosted its annual community tree planting days last week.

“We are incredibly proud to once again be partnering with Planet Ark for National Tree Day,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said.

“Protecting and enhancing our natural environment is something we can all contribute to and planting native seedlings is just one way we can do this.

“Our annual National Tree Day event encourages the local community to get involved in a fun project that will benefit Parramatta for many years to come.”

This year’s event was the third and final installment of a three-year project aiming to plant 10,000 native trees, shrubs and groundcovers along Toongabbie Creek at Third Settlement Reserve in Winston Hills.

Tree planting at Third Settlement Reserve is part of an ecologically endangered vegetation community that serves as a significant wildlife corridor to a number of native animals and birds.

Ryde Secondary College says the new Heart of Ryde will perform

RYDE Secondary College supports additional community space that could be delivered under The New Heart of Ryde proposal.

College principal Cassy Norris said the continued growth of education in the Ryde community meant there was a greater need for a space where schools could come together to interact, collaborate, create and celebrate.

“The New Heart of Ryde would be great for our current and future students as it will provide them with a facility where we can celebrate their achievements in a local setting,” Ms Norris said.

“Recently we were honoured to receive gold trophies for our concert band and choir, in the Ryde Eisteddfod, a performing arts event with more than 5,000 entries each year held at various locations in the city.

‘It would be great to be able to being everyone together in the one location for large cultural events such as this.”

“Performance space is

something the city is currently lacking.

“For instance, there is a Ryde Schools Spectacular where primary and high schools come from far and wide to participate, however, there is currently no space in Ryde to facilitate this.

“The talent in the area of performance, dance and creative arts at these types of events is amazing for all to see and experience.”

Ms Norris said The New Heart of Ryde had the potential to become a creative arts hub that could benefit primary and secondary students in the region.

“It would be great to have a continuum for creative arts and performance and in primary schools in this district, the standard of performance is really high,” Ms Norris said.

“Primaries have the time and the opportunity to really develop capacity

through student practice in extended blocks of time. In secondary school with up to eight subjects in some years, complex timetables and pressure on limited performance space, performance is more limited, and mostly an extracurricular activity, often before or after school or outside of school.

“By providing a local opportunity for larger scale performance and creative arts, there could be further collaboration between schools, and stages of learning for all students including ours, within and outside school hours.

“By having this facility it will build on Ryde’s cultural profile and enable Ryde to develop further as a centre of arts and performance.”

Ms Norris is a member of the Economic Development Advisory Committee and believes The New Heart of Ryde could deliver economic benefits to the

local community as well.

“The City of Ryde has a GDP of $15 billion and it is totally appropriate for a cultural space that will acknowledge the creative and performance talents in the area and add to the local economy.

“This facility will enhance the economic diversity of Ryde, building on its reputation as a ‘silicon valley’, and wholesaling centre with a creative hub.”

The New Heart of Ryde is the new vision for the Ryde Civic Centre, delivering a four-fold increase in community facilities without the introduction of any residential development on the site.

The City of Ryde is currently undertaking formal consultation on the new vision until Sunday August 25.

The heritage reforms will be backed by council grants to help home owners meet the cost of heritage conservation to add value to their heritagelisted properties.

They bring the City of Ryde closer to the widespread heritage protection policy in neighbouring Hunters Hill which has resulted in that municipality having some of the highest home and land values in Sydney.

The reforms will specifically amend the Ryde Local Environment Plan to create six new heritage conservation areas and 44 new heritage items across the City of Ryde.

The former Squire’s Brewery and Halverson’s Boat Yard in Putney and the Glades Bay Baths in Gladesville will also be listed as archaeological sites under the reforms.

Peter Mitchell from the Ryde Heritage Advisory Committee said he expects a backlash against the reforms from homeowners who want to demolish, rebuild or significantly renovate heritage homes and from those who believe homes in their street have no heritage value.

He urged councillors not to back down in the face of opposition.

“I encourage you to hold firm,” he said at last Tuesday night’s council

meeting.

“When it gets to the community you will face angst but change is possible.”

Mr Mitchell said the long term benefits will be welcomed by most home owners.

“Statistics are clear, property values will increase by 20 per cent.” ‘‘Get yourself a real estate agent who knows this, it is all about context and future.”

In addition to changes to the Local Environment Plan, the Council has allocated an additional $500,000 to its Local Heritage Assistance Fund and will increase the size of individual grants from the fund from $5,000 to $15,000.

Despite councillors from all sides of politic unanimous in their rejection of the “do it yourself” heritage listing policy of former Mayor Colonel Bill Pickering, this new policy is not seen as a reaction to the Pickering policy but the result of a city wide review.

“The reforms are based on the findings of a comprehensive heritage review commissioned by the City of Ryde to protect the community’s heritage and provide greater certainty to current and prospective home owners,” City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said.

He said the thrust of the reforms will ensure places of heritage significance will be protected from opportunistic property developers.

“Ryde has been a target of overdevelopment for years and our community is concerned about losing our City’s history,” he said.

“These measures show how serious this Council is about protecting our local heritage.”

The Mayor has been under fire recently for imposing interim heritage orders to stop developments with some developers in Denistone claiming it has cost them tens of thousands of dollars and destroyed their dreams of enlarging heritage homes to support growing families.

The Chen family from Denistone accused the Mayor of selectively “playing politics” with property development.

“Mayor is gambling he gets votes in Denistone and Eastwood.”

Council Roy Maggio accepts the economic argument that heritage protection adds value to individual properties and but said enforcement of a council policy is not the right way to go about heritage protection.

“I encourage people to heritage list their historic

homes but not force it on them with a council policy, perhaps there can be discussions between the council and home owners through a mediator, like the Ryde Historical Society.”

Mayor Laxale said a policy is needed because residents have a right to know what they can and cannot do.

“These changes will provide much-needed certainty in the development process,” he said.

Ryde’s last heritage study undertaken in 2010 left the majority of properties identified unprotected.

“About 20 percent of these properties have been demolished or significantly altered, thereby losing their heritage significance,” he said.

“If we do not act urgently, more and more properties worthy of protection will be lost forever.

“We will also provide financial support to owners to protect and enhance their heritage properties, with a $500,000 increase to the Heritage Assistance Fund.”

The reforms will now be submitted to the Department of Planning for Gateway Determination prior to the City of Ryde undertaking extensive community consultation on the proposed changes.

Ryde leading the way on climate change The City of Ryde’s extensive work to tackle climate change has been recognised with Council’s Solar PV project at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre (RALC) named as a finalist in the 2019 Cities Power Partnership Awards.

The awards recognise outstanding achievement by local governments across Australia in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate advocacy.

Completed this year, RALC’s extensive solar system is the largest of its kind in North West Sydney and includes 846 solar panels, generating more than 300 kilowatts of power. It is estimated to save more than 315 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and more than 366 MWh of energy each year.

Moocooboola thrills with circus stars and curiosity stalls

THOUSANDS of locals and visitors from across Sydney and overseas attended the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Moocooboola Festival at Boronia Park Oval in Hunters Hill last Sunday.

The large crowd praised the quality of the performing artists at the event and the interesting and informative variety of stalls.

The key themes of heritage and the en-

vironment were showcased this year and visitors were thrilled by the circus acts and local entertainers.

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett and the council team were praised for their pro-

fessional handling of all aspects of Moocooboola, despite a limited budget this year.

Tribute to Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club first lady Beryl Anne Aggett

RYDE EASTWOOD Leagues Club is mourning the death of one of itstreasured first ladies in Beryl Anne Aggett (pictured) of Ryde.

Beryl - the wife of the late Hawks pioneer and long serving Leagues Club president and Football Club supremo Keith Aggett - passed away peacefully on July 5 aged 85.

Her son Graeme - a current Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club director - gave this moving eulogy at Beryl’s recent funeral service held at Macquarie Park Crenatorium: My mother Beryl Anne Aggett was a woman of integrity, strength and kindness and was caring, generous and loving.

She was born at the Women`s Hospital at Camperdown in August 1933.

Growing up she wasn’t afforded the privileges of comfort and luxury, but this made her the woman she was and she strived tirelessly to provide for her family.

As a child she grew up in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney and was often looked after by her older sister Jean.

Mum had many school friends and they remained loyal throughout her life.

She excelled at all school sports but left school at 15 to work at Joe Gardner`s Shoes at Newtown.

In her late teens she met my father Keith, the love of her life.

They were married in 1952 and spent the rest of their lives together

and this is a true testament to their character.

Mum was never quite the same after Dad`s death.

This family was built around the loyalty and dedication that Mum and Dad worked so hard to cultivate, values instilled in myself and my sister Susan from such a young age came from a place of commitment, love and devotion.

Family was always at the core of everything Mum and Dad did.

At the beginning of their married lives they lived in Balmain adjacent to the Power Station near Drummoyne bridge, along with dad’s parents, his brother, his uncle and his grandfather.

The house was small but always filled with love and family.

I was born in 1955 and my sister Susan followed in 1959.

It was at that time that dad was playing football for Parramatta, and he saved his season bonus to purchase two blocks of land at Top Ryde.

They built my Grandparents house on one block and then three years later built their own house next door, very handy for the babysitter.

Mum`s life was dedicated to Dad and after he was injured and forced to retire from the game, he took an ac-

tive rolel in the formation of Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

For the next 63 years he and mum worked tirelessly to help establish that Club as one of the leading community assets in the district.

Mum followed dad and also contributed to the Club’s success, giving her time when she could to assist in raffles and working in the store to raise money for the Club.

They travelled overseas with her many friends from the club and have treasured memories of these times Like all Mums of that era, Beryl was a fantastic knitter, making countless baby booties and wonderful jumpers and jackets for our children and friends, only stopping when arthritis made it impossible to hold the needles.

Mum was extremely fastidious about her appearance, and without fail would have her hair permed every Friday at Nick`s hairdressing salon, which just happened to be in the house across the street.

Nick always did a great job and Mum was only too happy to recommend him to all her friends.

Growing up with my mother I felt invincible and she spoiled me rotten.

I`m sure that Mum saw every game of

football I ever played, rain hail or shine, but she also watched my sister play netball and even competed herself in a senior competition to keep fit.

She was a keen tennis player and a demon on the net, with a great swinging serve.

One other activity Mum loved was Bingo.

Dad would take her to the Club twice a week to play, and she became so good she could play two cards at once, thus doubling her chances of winning.

She had great success at this game and would often win enough money to pay for her groceries and bits and pieces for the children.

She made many friends and was very sad when the illness of my father restricted them visiting the Club to play.

Mum liked to keep busy and when my sister and I started school mum took a job at Top Ryde working in the shoe department of Benjamin`s for a few years.

She later worked in the Joahn`s Fruit and Vegetable shop and was highly regarded as an excellent worker.

I’ll never forget the day she came home from work and said to me you have to have a dance with Christine Prandolini, she came in to the shop today and I told her you’d dance with her at the Holy Cross dance on Friday night.

Without mum I wouldn’t have met my beautiful wife.

Mum and Dad would spend Christmas holidays taking us to the beach.

Beryl loved the sun and surf and was an excellent swimmer, holding a NSW title for 100m freestyle relay, swimming at the same club with the legendary Dawn Fraser.

The days at the beach were spent with their good friends the Thompsons and the

She adored each and every one of them and was very proud of their achievements, both at school and on the sporting field.

When Lisa went back to school Mum encouraged me to take on the role of babysitter.

I made mum’s house my regular lunch date and without mum’s help I wouldn’t have been able to have my afternoon nap.

Later they bought the caravan at Fingal Bay and we enjoyed many carefree holidays on the beach - swimming, fishing, riding bikes and roller blading in the Nelson Bay area.

It needs to be mentioned that an enormous part of mum’s life was spent looking after her family, loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Right up until her death the highlight of Mum`s week was to help Susan mind her grandchildren, a task that was never a chore just a pleasure.

Mum devoted her life to her family and unselfishly put the needs of others before herself.

She was the matriarch of the family and no one could possibly replace her.

THEME for Education Week 2019 is ‘Every student, every voice’, highlighting the importance of students shaping their educational journeys and for every student to be known, valued and cared for.

Each group will be performing during Education Week, with the Performance Band playing pieces that recently won Gold at the Ryde East Music Festival The school also has a String Ensemble and a growing recorder group who enjoy many performance opportunities. The recorder group recently performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music.

There will be a performance by the Year 2 choir and the combined Year 3-6 choir performance of

Along with the many music talents on display, the 3-6 Boys’ Dance Crew and the Boys’ T-Crew will also be performing.

During Education Week, parents will visit classrooms to see the amazing work of the students.

There will also be a head-to-head debate of the schools’ two debating teams as part of the Premier’s Debating Competition, poetry reading and an awarding of the winners of an Education Week art competition.

On Friday, many of the school’s sporting teams will be playing in the semifinals in the local interschool sporting competition.

Student voice is strong at Marsden High School.

The school is currently running a ‘Shark Tank’ like competition for students to pitch their proposals for improvements to the school with ideas such as additional sporting equipment and a therapy dog being suggested.

Students are also very proactive with the school’s Social Justice and Environment teams working hard to make a difference.

“The Social Justice Team is focused on raising awareness and fundraising for people in need in our wider community,” said Ms Fevzi, Head Teacher at Marsden.

“Last week our team raised $1400 for Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer and recently we also raised money for the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation and local refugee students during Refugee Week,” explained Tamsin Slender, Year 9 student.

The Marsden Environment Team’s purpose is to raise awareness and participation in environmental sustainability.

Students have in-

troduced a number of new initiatives including paper and plastics recycling, bush regeneration and their latest project is a ‘clothing hub’ for recycling, reusing, repurposing and redistributing old unwanted clothing items.

“All students and the

community are encouraged to clean out and bring to school any unused or unwanted clothing items or accessories for the clothing hub,” said Mr Wood, teacher and team co-ordinator.

“We have learnt that approximately 25 per

cent of Australia’s current landfill could be recycled. We are hoping our initiatives can make a positive difference for our environment,” added Masson Guan, Year 10 student.

ANTI ABORTION protestors were cheered and jeered outside the Top Ryde electorate office of Ryde MP Victor Dominello last Friday. Four good friends recently completeted the Women’s Pairs championship with Rae Isaacs and Margaret Caldwell (pictured left) proving too good on the day against Jan Vinton and Esther Lam in a hard fought final.

North Ryde RSL Netball to celebrate its proud and decorated 50 year history

NORTH Ryde RSL Netball Club - one of the longest established sporting organisations in the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association - is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019.

The Club will mark the milestone this Saturday night August 10 at its Seniors Presentation and Jubilee Dinner in North Ryde RSL Community Club’s Grand Pittwater Room.

Formed in 1969, the North Ryde RSL netballers originally participated in the Zone RSL competition with 15 junior teams before joining ERNA in 1971.

Back then, the Club fielded one Senior team and 20 junior sides and their games were played at Brush Farm courts.

Today the North Ryde RSL Netball Club remains strong and competitive with 35 teams totalling 324 players registered in this year’s winter day competition.

In 2019 the Club has 13 Senior teams (117 players), 18 Cadet/ Junior teams (171 players) and four NetSetGO teams (36 players).

Two of the club’s greatest stalwarts are Robyn Bates and Lorna Humphreys who have given an incredible 50 years and 39 years continuous service respectively.

Robyn was there in 1969 when her two daughters Jennifer (9) and Leanne (6) started playing netball.

She has a prestigious list of voluntary roles with the Club including coaching and managing numerous teams, Ground Supervisor, Secretary and Assistant Secretary, Umpire Convenor and ERNA Delegate.

Robyn coached two Club Teams that were runners up in the Coca Cola Cup and an A1 Team that were runners up in the Genevieve Cup. In 1999 when the Club became a Senior Intra Club, it needed a

North Ryde RSL Netball and ERNA stalwarts Lorna Humphreys and Robyn Bates.

President - a role which Robyn took on and has remained in over the past 20 years.

Robyn fondly remembers the number of dads like Kevin Bates, Des Gray, Ernie Young, John Gale and Alan Jump that worked tirelessly in the early years to get the jobs done and a great sense of community given by the families with their years of volunteering.

Her proudest achievement remains when the Seniors were accepted as a Senior Intra Club in 1999.

Robyn received the Anne Clarke Service Award from NSW Netball in 2003 for volunteering services to netball.

Lorna started in 1980 when her daughter Denise was 7.

She managed this ini-

tial team and all subsequent teams that her daughter played in.

Lorna became the Club Secretary in 198283 and remained in that position until 1991 when the Juniors and Seniors split from being one Club.

After the split, Lorna became Secretary of the Seniors and this role covered the Secretary, Treasurer and Registrar and an ERNA Delegate.

After stepping away from the Secretary position, around 2011, Lorna continued volunteering on the Committee as Treasurer and assisting with uniforms.

She has continuously volunteered in many areas to present day and was presented with the Carolyn McLeod Memorial Administration Award in 2013.

Both Robyn and Lorna are part of a select band of North Ryde RSL Netball Club life members along with Leanne Bates and Jenny Rodgers.

2019 also marks the 20th Anniversary of the Netball Senior Intra Club.

It took eight years of extremely hard work and a lot of consistent lobbying by a number of committee members to finally be accepted as a Senior Intra Club of the North Ryde RSL Club.

Robyn and Lorna along with Margaret Hodgkiss and Lorraine Person were incredibly dedicated to seeing this come to fruition.

North Ryde RSL Netball will also celebrate their 50 year milestone at the Club’s Junior Presentation on Sunday September 15.

Mighty Hawks a force in Sydney Shield

By CHRIS KARAS RYDE EASTWOOD have staked a genuine claim for the 2019 NSWRL Sydney Shield premiership after eclipsing competition pacesetters Cabramatta 36-18 last Saturday at New Era Stadium.

The well drilled Hawks had too many big guns for the table topping Cabramatta side – storming to a 36-0 lead after 64 minutes to serve notice that they are the team to beat for this year’s title.

A late points flurry saved Cabramatta from an embarrassing whitewash after the Hawks were reduced to 11 men after prop Langi Suli-Ruka and hooker Tristan EvansTsoi were sin binned enabling the Two Blues to post four tries in the final eight minutes and make the score respectable.

The win keeps the Hawks in fourth spot after 17 rounds on 26 points – behind leaders Cabramatta (32), St Marys (29) and East Campbelltown Eagles (26) on percentages.

Ryde Eastwood dominated from the outset with their powerful and mobile forward pack laying the foundations for an important win.

Elusive fullback and skipper Angelo Panambalana crossed twice in the opening 15 minutes before half back Mitchell Gray darted over to help give the Hawks a 20-0 lead at the break.

There was no stopping the Ryde Eastwood cubs after the interval with centre Bradley Cincotta and wingers Sione Folau and Kirk Patton posting tries and five eighth Bennett Wheelhouse finishing with six goals to complete the rout.

Cabramatta wingers Jason Jana (2) and Isaiah Tuari and utility Harry Brett registered late tries to soften the

blow.

MEANWHILE Ryde Eastwood U/20 Div 1 team maintained its unbeaten record with a 22-18 victory over Asquith last Sunday at Storey Park Both sides were locked 10-all at the interval with Shannon Condon grabbing two first half tries for the Hawks and darting over for a third after the break to give his side a 16-10 lead.

The Hawks extended their lead to 22-10 when Tallis Smith burst through to score.

Aidan Young booted three goals to give the Hawks the edge.

Condon was sharp in attack and strong in defence and ably supported by hooker Blake Layton, lock Matt Cap-

arotta and fullback Jay Watling.

Ryde Eastwood’s U/18 Div 1 team suffered its first loss of the season when humbled 26-16 by Clovelly at Birchgrove Oval.

The Hawks remain on top of the ladder and square off with Newtown Jets this weekend in the final preliminary round.

Joint NSWRL Women’s Open competition leaders Ryde Eastwood had the bye and meet third placed Mascot this weekend.

There was no joy for the Hawks U/23s who were beaten 26-18 by Hills Bulls and the U/18 and U/20 Div 2 sides who lost to De La Salle Caringbah (42-12) and Narrabeen (40-4) respectively.

Mr Chalk - a Rozelle Codocks junior who had a long and distinguished career in rugby league - passed away last Friday after continuing health problems.

His funeral service will be held this Friday in the Magnolia and Palm chapels at Macquarie Park Cemetary at 1pm.

He had the honour of becoming the first Chairman of the Wests Tigers board when foundation clubs Balmain and Western Suburbs merged in 1999.

Chalk joined the NSWRL, ARL NRL boards from 2001 and served as both ARL and NSWRL Chairman between 2010 and 2012.

He was considered one of the architects in establishing the ARL Commission in

Beyond his many achievements at his beloved Tigers, this achievement in presiding over the creation of the Australian Rugby League Commission was his enduring legacy to the game.

Chalk had been President of the NSWRL since 2013 and was awarded Life Membership of the NSWRL in 2015.

After many years serving at many levels of the game, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016 for ‘significant service to rugby league as an administrator at state and national level, and to Indigenous and NonIndigenous youth.’

As a ten year old schoolboy, Chalk spent many an afternoon kicking a football on his home turf at Drummoyne Oval.

He would join his dad Harry - one of the Tigers’ top administrators and president of the Drummoyne Club - and soak up the atmosphere at close hand.

Tigers Roaring to NRL Grand Final!

Tigers officially gave notice last Thursday that they are in the race for NRL Grand Final honours this year when they leapt into the top eight with a decisive belting of JT’s Milkmaids at Leichhardt Oval HQ.

The Tigers never looked like losing from starting whistle to fulltime when the scoreline was 28-4 from five brilliant tries and four over the little black dot from skipper Moses Mbye and winger Paul Momirovski who also roared over for the fifth try which he converted.
