North Ryde sporting identities Ken and Marguerite Burkett celebrate their 60th Wedding anniversary tomorrow (Thursday). The couple (pictured) were married on April 11, 1959 in Holy Family Church Maroubra with the presiding priest being Ken’s cousin, Father Brian Byron - former parish priest of Gladesville. They moved to North Ryde in 1960 and have four children - Raymond, Tania, Glenn and David; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Ken and Marguerite have both been presidents of the former Ryde City Bowling Club where Marguerite won major club titles as well as a district championship. They have also been recent Presidentd of Ryde City Combined Probus Club. Ken grew up in a sporting family at Lane Cove where he played first grade soccer and A Grade tennis. He also gained a FIFA senior coaching certificate and coached junior soccer at both Spiritus Sanctus and Holy Cross College Ryde for over 25 years. Marguerite, who was born in Holland, comes from a family of nine children while Ken was one of seven. The couple celebrated the milestone with a huge family gathering last weekend.

Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM officially launched Eastwood Ryde Netball Association’s season last Saturday at Meadowbank Park and celebrated with a $50,000 grant cheque for repair and reconstruction of two netball courts.

ERNA President Karen Waud and former president and Sponsorship and Grants Coordinator Anne Doring OAM thanked John Alexander and the Federal Government for recognising ERNA’s need and approving their grant application.

Letters to the Editor Looking forward to Waterfront owners Ryde Renaissance access rights Dear Sir, I am so happy to see Victor Doninello re-elected alongside a strong Liberal Government.

I am glad that our community saw through the lies of a destructive Labor candidate in Mayor Jerome Laxale who had no vision for Ryde and only delivered negative smear campaign after negative smear campaign and fake local resident letter after fake local resident letter.

Following on from the result of the Victorian State election, and now here in NSW it seems clear that voters are yearning for leaders and candidates with vision, regardless of Party affiliation and are no longer being swayed by scare campaigns or smears.

The next four years look set to be the greatest era in Ryde’s history, it looks set to be the Ryde Renaissance that Victor has envisioned for Ryde ever since his historic by-election win in 2008.

I look forward to seeing Marsden and Meadowbank schools becoming nation leading schools once they’ve moved to the education precinct, I look forward to new schools opening, I look forward to Meadowbank TAFE pioneering tech and 21st century based industries, I look forward to Ryde Hospital being built, I look forward to seeing Victor continue his fight against overdevelopment and I look forward to seeing Victor Dominello delivering for Ryde what no other MP has delivered before.

Thank you Mr Dominello and thank you community for voting for vision and for a Ryde Renaissance instead of the destructive and negative plans of the Labor candidate.

There are at least three Councillors presently on Ryde Council who were there on May 28, 2013, when Council considered advice from its own lawyers and written advice from Senior Counsel, engaged by the Waterfront Action Group (WAG) and then resolved to change the route of the Ryde River Walk, so that it did not block the direct access to Glades Bay, which is the Common Law right of waterfront property owners in Western Crescent Gladesville.

WAG is currently awaiting approval from its lawyers, to a letter to Council and which reminds the Council of its earlier resolution and the reasons for it.

WAG will again provide to Council the written advice of Senior Counsel and will reaffirm its intention to fund legal action against the Council, should Council ignore the Common Law rights of direct access to a public waterway, for property owners in the Ryde LGA. Sydney residents deserting NSW Dear Sir, A recently released report showed what most of us that have resided in Sydney for most of our lives, have long suspected.

Sydney siders are deserting NSW in record numbers.

They are moving interstate or to country areas.

We know of four families that have followed this path in the last year.

“White Flight” was a term that was recently used by a politician.

Thanks to the idiots in Canberra that make decisions without taking into account the concerns of the Australian public, record numbers of migrants have been flooding in to our City, particularly over the last twenty years.

Our cities cannot simply cope.

Our politicians don’t care as long as they vote for them, but those of us that spent our childhood growing up care free and happy in our beautiful country, and want the same for our children and grand children, we can see the mess Sydney is in.

I make a prediction that within one hundred years if things remain the same tourists visiting Sydney or Australia for that matter will not be visiting say Chinatown, but Anglo Saxon town to see and experience what Australia and Australians were like.

CO2 ‘major factor in climate change’ Dear Sir, I write about the letter “Climate change not caused by CO2” from A.G. Johnston April 3, 2019.

While it can be said that climate change is caused by a number of factors, CO2 is a major factor.

But there are three absurdities in Johnston’s letter.

Firstly, he says CO2 is necessary for plant life.

True. But CO2 is also toxic to animal life (we exhale it as a toxin). However, both of those facts are irrelevant.

It is what CO2 does in the atmosphere that matters.

Then he says he would like to see research into the effect of moving ores from the south to the north on Earth’s spinning.

The mass of the Earth is 5.972 x 10^24 kg. Anything that man can move from one hemisphere to the other is completely irrelevant and dwarfed by the amount of CO2 we add to the atmosphere.

His second point is even more absurd about how wind farms might change wind patterns.

I can only hope that Mr Johnston sent this letter as an April Fool’s joke, and that TWT fell for it.

However, it is indicative of the kinds of absurd arguments against man-made climate change caused by CO2, which is rather sad.

Mass grave site found under Gladesville park

A mass grave site has been discovered beside Victoria Road at Gladesville Hospital, containing the corpses of at least 1,200 people, buried in unmarked graves from 1838 to 1868.

It has been confirmed the deceased were former patients of the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum, the forerunner to Gladesville Hospital.

The area has been sealed off to traffic and government signage has just been erected at the site, for which there could be a more dignified memorial.

“This area is the final resting place of more than 1,200 people. They were the patients in the former hospital adjacent to this site and died there,” the sign says.

“In closing this road to vehicles we begin to restore respect to those whose remains are here in unmarked graves.”

While many suffered from mental illness, others were abandoned there by their families and are thought to include alcoholics.

More disturbingly, the dead may include domestic servants who had been sexually assaulted and murdered by their employers to silence them and prevent scandals.

Also potentially among the deceased are people deemed to be “creative or

artistic”.

“It is now clear that many of the people incarcerated here may not even have had mental health issues,” the signage says.

“Our community acknowledges their journeys of suffering, distress and abandonment.

“Designating this burial place will mark the beginning of a journey to honour their memory.”

Overcrowding was a major problem, particularly after 1838 when women from the Parramatta Female Factory were sent there.

“People’s rights were routinely violated and their humanity ignored,” the signage states.

“Almost all the graves are unmarked, an indication of the high level of ignorance and shame.”

Recently-conducted research has identified the names of 923 of the corpses, while names of the first 306 deceased are unknown.

The sign also notes that their fate is a poignant reminder that a civilised society must never allow vulnerable people to be abandoned or hidden away.

“Instead we must focus on hope, recovery, support and inclusion.”

Is this house haunted?

Backpackers document chilling Gladesville hospital encounter Two backpackers have documented on video their frightening experience in an abandoned old house in the grounds of Gladesville Hospital, believed to be haunted.

The two female backpackers’ short youtube video - titled “Haunted Halloween Gladesville Asylum” - suggests they encountered more than they had bargained for.

British backpacker Elizabeth (pictured) recorded this reaction inside a particulary ghostly area of the house.

“I’m feeling this thing and I don’t like it, I don’t like it .. I’m going to admit now, I’m scared,” she records.

“Let’s leave now, let’s leave it in peace.”

Once outside, she gathers the courage to record her encounter with the malignant spirit.

“It feels so cold, so heavy, it feels really bad, like you get bad vibes, it felt like I am in (a haunted house) in England and really uncomfortable and I definitely feel the atmosphere is different inside and I don’t ever want to go in there again.”

The backpackers did

not enter a tunnel within the hospital grounds, also believed to be haunted.

Comments in response to the video clip have been posted by other visitors to the area, with references to their own supernatural encounters and one one former site worker who claimed seeing the ghost.

Despite its haunted heritage, Gladesville Hospital is today is a place of hope, boasting world-famous health services, the Hunters Hill State Emergency Services Depot and the acclaimed Giant Steps school.

Ghosthunters considering a visit to the site will find most of its destitute old buildings sealed off with barbed wire and security guards regularly patrolling the area.

Catholic school students learn to fly the flag

AN ARMY sergeant visited Gladesville’s Our Lady Queen Of Peace Catholic School on Monday to teach the students how to fly the Australian flag.

Sergeant Andrew Wallace from HQ 8th Brigade (Training) said the flag must always be treated with respect and should be carried to the flagpole draped across the left shoulder, over the heart.

“At your school the national anthem is

played as the flag is raised but in the army we have a whistle to let soldiers know the flag is being raised and that we should turn to face the flag pole and salute the flag,” he said.

“Once the flag is raised the whistle is blown twice.”

Sergeant Wallace said the army raises the flag at 7am and lowers it at 4pm, unless the flag is on an illuminated flagpole.

“If someone has died we lower the flag to half mast, which means we are mourning.”

“On Anzac Day the

flag is raised all the way to the top of the mast and then lowered down to half mast.”

Sergeant Wilson explained that the British flag is in the corner of the Australian flag because Australia was a British colony.

THE TALENTS of Ryde councillor, musical maestro Christopher Gordon have been recognised yet again with the Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Award for Best Original Score for Bruce Beresford-directed Ladies in Black.

In December, Christopher graced TWT’s cover after winning an AACTA Award - an Aussie ‘Oscar’ - for Best Original Score.

At last Thursday’s FCCA Annual Awards for Australian Film at Paddington/ Woolahra RSL, Ladies in Black again made its presence felt, also taking out Best Actress (Angourie Rice); Best Support (Noni Hazlehurst).

It was also nominated for Best Editing (Mark Warner), Best Film (Sue Milliken, Allanah Zitserman), Best Script (Bruce Beresord, Sue Milliken), Best Director (Bruce Beresford) and Best Cinematography (Peter James ACS ASC).

Ladies in Black was released in Australian cinema’s in September. Set in the summer of 1959, when the impact of European migration and the rise of women’s liberation is about to change Australia forever.

The film tells the story of shy schoolgirl, Lisa, who takes a summer job at the prestigious Sydney department store, Goode’s, where she meets the ‘ladies in black’, who will change her life forever.

Christopher has successfully established himself as a niche composer of ceremonial musical accompaniments for numerous major national events and is also an Emmy Awardnominated creator of film and television soundtracks both here and abroad.

He has been commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (including concertos for bass trombone and horn), Gondwana Voices (including Peace On Earth), Sydney Omega Ensemble, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney International Brass Festival.

Christopher scores have featured in many of Australia’s major celebrations, including the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup Sydney, as well as the official celebration of the Centenary of Federation of Australia in 2001.

The Ryde Greens councillor has received wide industry acclaim, including an APRA Award in 1999 for the theme song for TV Miniseries, Moby Dick; Best Musical Score in 2009 at AACTAs predecessor, the

AFI Awards, for Mao’s Last Dancer.

His musical contribution to film and television includes credits for Adoration, Daybreakers, Crawl, the EMMY-nominated score for Salem’s Lot, On the Beach, When Good Ghouls Go Bad, Ward 13 and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Christopher has also amassed 16 Australian Screen Music Awards, with a further 10 nominations, with this week’s AACTA gong confirming he remains at the creative peak of his career.

Paula Clarkstone OAM remembered by her beloved Eisteddfod community A GIANT of the Eisteddfod community Paula Clarkstone, who devoted much of her life to encourage and nurturing talented youth, passed away last month.

“Our much loved foundation member, sponsor, teacher and for many years classical vocal coordinator, Paula Clarkstone OAM has died. We will miss her greatly,” Ryde Eisteddfod said in a statement on its website.

A lover of music, her performance career began on an Eisteddfod stage and evolved into more of an ambassadorship as an enthusiastic advocate for Sydney Eisteddfod and founding member of Ryde Eisteddfod.

She was a Fellow (Hon) of the International Music Examinations Board, a dedicated vocal teacher and adjudicator, long time member of the Music Teachers Association of NSW and lifelong and loving loving friend to all her students and fellow music lovers. ”I would love to see greater support for the vital work it does. It really nurtures young, talented people in such a wonderful way,” she said of the Eisteddfod’s role in the community in a recent fundraising appeal.

“You never know what a difference the little you give can make. ”I get very emotional about encouraging more people to support young talent… they will not let you down. They’re dedicated, disciplined and have such passion!”

Club Eastwood named Harmony Cup football champs Club Eastwood have been named this year’s AAAB Harmony Cup Football champions at Monday night’s Eastwood Chamber of Commerce April meeting at Club Eastwood.

Announcement was made by AAAB chairman Hugh Lee OAM, pictured, who explained that the scheduled competition was washed out by rain and then the only team available for a re-run on Easter Saturday was from Club Eastwood! Hence Club Eastwood have been awarded the winners!

Guest speaker on Monday night was Police Inspector Michael Dawson of Ryde Local Area Command who gave a comprehensive report on police activities in the area.

He said some smooth speaking Irish nationals have been scamming local residents, mainly elderly and single, on phony roof repairs.

Members expressed concerns at Ryde Council’s reversal on accepting the State Government’s recommendation to reduce some car parking fines from $130 to $80.

The mayor and his cohorts supported the move before the state election but have since reneged members said.

This was the message from Irene Miller, the 80 years strong matriarch of the Australian Chinese community, who received a standing ovation for her charity concert for seniors on Tuesday. The former teacher of Raimondi College describes loneliness and isolation as ‘villains’ that lead to depression. Miller says loneliness is everyone’s business and that we must be “Good Samaritan, and look out for loneliness next door.” Her friends, Joey Chan and Wendy Au, say Miller is an “exemplar of active ageing as she never gets tired of volunteering.”

Loneliness and social isolation are problems for many and the risks increase dramatically with age. Veteran volunteer, Robyn Cole, explains “…..With age comes loss: loss of spouse/ partner, peer group, pets and, of course, health and mobility. Not every older person is lucky enough to have caring children or neighbours, and loneliness and isolation follow.”

An elderly person living alone can sometimes go for days without speaking to anyone. “If a person is mobile they may speak to a sales assistant whilst shopping; the house-bound may speak to professional carers who call in. These interactions, however, are usually superficial and do little to alleviate loneliness.” says Cole.

Loneliness is everyone’s business.

Derek Balmer spoke at the meeting, rubbished signs at the pond warning children not to feed the ducks and warned of health risks related to the lake’s murky water.

“They say bread is killing the ducks but that is not true and we’re concerned that someone is going to get sick, really sick,” he said.

“We want to get Fraser’s and the council together as soon as possible and our main concern is the lake where nothing is left alive, it is toxic.”

Councillor Roy Maggio noted that the “timing of the dereliction” coincides with the park’s imminent handover to the community.

“It is an absolute disgrace, the gardens are ruined and the lake is putrid and as we’ve heard, potentially toxic,” he told councillors.

“But so far Fraser’s aren’t interested and our requests have been ignored.”

He said the park needs a major rescue operation.

“I acknowledge the wonderful residents and The Weekly Times who have stood up for this park and who are trying to save the ducks.”

“But the fact is this putrid water continues to have a devastating impact on birdlife which has distressed the local children.”

Councillor Penny Pedersen said pets are at risk.

“A local dog walker has complained, this is such a shame, and I commend the motion to hold the talks.”

The lake and the gardens were a showpiece of the Fraser’s Putney Hill development which recently purchased the land from the neighbouring Royal Rehab.

Councillor Maggio stressed that one of the reason’s the purchase was supported by the community was the creation of the gardens and lake as a public amenity.

West Ryde Easter Parade and Fair this Saturday I hope to see you all this Saturday for the West Ryde Easter Parade and Fair.

There will be something for everyone at this year’s event, with the traditional Easter Parade starting at 9.00am followed by a range of entertainment throughout the remainder of the day.

Market stalls will also be on hand with a range of international foods and information, as well as rides and games for the kids, while West Ryde Library will play host to a Hop In Story session as well as craft activities throughout the day.

Now in its 26th year, the West Ryde Easter Parade and Fair has become such an important event for the City of Ryde. Easter is such a special time for many people in the community so it is great that we can stage an annual event that brings people of all ages together to mark this special occasion.

Plenty on during these school holidays With Easter upon us it also means that school holidays are just around the corner and here at the City of Ryde we have plenty that will keep kids entertained throughout the break.

Our Library service host some great activities during the break including story time sessions, kids engineering workshops and an Egyptian mummy-themed escape room that brings the ancient past back to life.

The City of Ryde will also be undertaking a school holiday guided walk on Wednesday 17 April through ELS Hall Park followed by a tree planting session at Greenwood Park.

raised as a Catholic, John de Angelis has previously taken part in the Way Of The Cross in the role of the beloved discipline Saint John.

“I’ve always been part of the Church in some way but not really connected until I came to Hunters Hill ten years ago and met Father Kevin Bates OAM,” he said.

“This is a unique parish, a wonderful parish and my role as Jesus will be a spiritual challenge.

“Especially so as it will give me an opportunity to understand the emotions Our Lord went through on Good Friday, with every feeling from betrayal, to love and suffering.

“The journey to Cavalry on Good Friday is just like our own journey through the hard times in life.”

The Way Of The Cross walk is like a Passion Play but goes further to include the joyful Easter message of resurrection and new life.

Fifty five year old John de Angelis is aware of both aspects as he prepares for the role with the help of his family.

“I’ll look through the Gospel accounts with my children, who attend Villa Maria Catholic school, and particularly with my son who is very enthusiastic,” he said.

He said he recalls some “very spiritual” experiences from his past experiences in the Way Of The Cross which include one particularly poignant moment during the crucifixion scene at Villa Maria.

“The most amazing moment was the Good Friday afternoon when it was very misty in the grounds of Villa Maria and at the moment Jesus died on the Cross the was an almost eerie calm and a deep and solemn silence,” he said.

“Regardless of whether or not your are a Christian or even religious the Way Of The Cross Walk is just such a rewarding experience and such a beautiful story.”

The role of The Blessed Virgin Mary is being played by Jackie Barrish.

The Way Of The Cross is a multi-faith experience that starts at All Saints Anglican Church in Hunters Hill at 10:15am and winds its way through to Villa Maria, re-enacting the traditional Stations Of The Cross.

Participants in the Walk are given guide books, which assign words they are asked to recite at each station.

One of the highlights of The Way Of The Cross is the stop in the historic and atmospheric rose garden grounds of the Sisters of St Joseph chapel, a few doors down from the Hunters Hill Shopping Village.

BORONIA PARK NORTH will be the site of Hunters Hill’s first all ability, inclusive playground.

The playground will be designed for children of all ages and abilities and was inspired by Villa Maria Catholic School student Evander Conroy.

It will be funded by a $200,000 ‘Everyone Can Play’ grant as well as by a $50,000 contribution from Hunters Hill Council.

Community organisations appointed to the Advisory Group include the Hunters Hill Trust, the Hunters Hill Rugby Union Club, Boronia Park Public School, the Ryde Hunters Hill Cricket Club and the Gladesville Ravens Netball Club alongside bush care and flora and fauna advocates.

They will participate in joint meetings and workshops during the next six months with a provision that

they must listen and be respectful of diverse opinions.

“Last time the Plan of Management was thought through it dealt with individual groups but this time it will be collective so everyone hears everyone else’s views,” Clr Ross Williams said.

Councillor Zac Miles said he expected substantial community engagement and “widespread consultation” to achieve a fair and equitable outcome.

Rumours I’ve passed on are greatly exaggerated

JOE the Barber of Midway has scoffed at rumours he’s called it a day and told The Weekly Times he intends to continue until his salon’s 50th Anniversary next year.

“The rumour is I’m going or that Joe has left us and it is more than one person spreading the rumour,” he said.

“I’m very much alive and if God permits, I’ll be here to celebrate my 50 years.”

Joe the Barber migrated to Sydney from Forza D’Agro in Sicily in 1966 and his shop on the second floor of the Midway shopping village still features a travel poster from Forza D’Agro which includes a photograph of the house he grew up in.

He came to Sydney during a boom period for the new ‘Continental’ stylists for men.

“Italian sylists were famous, every man wanted a continental style, to look like a movie star !”

Today Joe has a regular and loyal clientele and he would hate to see them leave as a result of a rumour.

“I say I do not have customers, I have friends,” he said.

“I rent my shop from wonderful people and I do not intend to leave because life here is good.

“In Italy we have a saying that if you think good, a good life will come to you.”

Joe concedes that his clients come for a chat, as well as a haircut.

“I don’t talk relgion, I don’t talk about football and I don’t talk about politics,” he said.

“I talk about beautiful women .. I’m Italian .. but what I really love to do is tell jokes !”

Councillor Maggio asserts his right to follow up TWT issues at meetings

AN ATTEMPT to limit an independent City of Ryde councillor from raising more than three community issues – reported by The Weekly Times – during council meetings, has failed.

Councillor Roy Maggio (Ind) now retains the right to speak on five issues per meeting despite being further accused of using community outrage stirred by these TWT reports to get residents to come to meetings and support him.

It is alleged by Labor that these “newspaper driven” motions hold up council meetings and result in late night council sessions.

As well as raising issues reported in this newspaper, it was also noted that

Clr Maggio’s motions end up being followed up in The Weekly Times, garnering him self publicity.

“Do we all want to have our names in the newspaper ? “ Labor Clr Penny Pedersen asked.

“There is a re-occurring theme with the way he works.”

Councillor Pedersen said an example is Clr Maggio’s latest motion related to the death of ducks in Putney’s Lardelli Park, an issue reported in The Weekly Times two weeks ago which

prompted outraged locals to attend Tuesday night’s council meeting.

“I also had someone talk to me about the ducks, you don’t need to take it through the newspaper,” she said.

Councillor Maggio said he will continue to follow up on issues raised by the community through The Weekly Times, whether Mayor Laxale and his Labor team like it or not.

“The Weekly Times is a strong and independent newspaper that explains the truth to our community and supports our community, so I will continue to pursue issues raised in The Weekly Times and get action taken for our residents, with their support at council meetings.”

He described councillors who attempted to limit his motions to three per meeting as “jealous” because their own attempts to communicate “online” with residents are a failure.

“I don’t go on social media and Facebook to promote myself, I go out with The Weekly Times supporting local residents and local businesses, face to face,” he said.

Liberal Clr Jordan Lane took up the point.

“What I hear from Councillor Pedersen is jealousy because Councillor Maggio is entitled to speak with The Weekly Times just as I am entitled to speak with The Weekly Times and it is a cop out for you to get

stuck into him,” he told Clr Pedersen at the council meeting.

“If you are jealous of Clr Maggio than write your own press release to The Weekly Times, it is not that hard !”

Liberal councillor Trenton Brown also supported Clr Maggio’s “right” to raise more than three motions per meeting.

“This is all about targeting one man and if he wants to raise more than three motions then all power to him !”

The debate also raises issues about some councillors reliance on the electronic media and

council portals to deal with issues, rather than through printed editions of this newspaper.

One Ryde ratepayer recently compared this “obsession with the technology” with the Road Runner cartoons and the Coyote’s bungled attempts to catch the Road Runner using modern gimmicks and gadgets.

“The real tragedy about the Coyote was not his accidents, but his boundless faith in the latest ACME products !

“Just like some people’s boundless faith in social media, Facebook, websites and emails.”

LAST year Chris Staples and the Ray Park Heritage Group published a book From Fruit Bowl Farms to Housing Boom which was a pictorial history of how this area changed from being the fruit bowl of Sydney to its development through subdivision of the farms.

Volume Two was recently launched by author Chris and the Group and is now available which covers the area south of Carlingford Road to Mobbs Lane and the eastern side of the railway.

The FFA Head of Leagues, Greg O’Rourke, believes the decision to move the match is in the best interests of all stakeholders to ensure A-League matches continue to be played on surfaces conducive to professional football.

“We acknowledge that the playing surface was, and would be, playable and safe for Hyundai ALeague football as verified by two independent expert reports in days prior to the match as per our normal process,” said O’Rourke.

“The SCG’s wicket block, though, compromises the uniformity of the field for football in

particular.

“Following discussions with all stakeholders, we have taken the proactive decision to move the remaining Sydney FC match at the SCG to Kogarah Oval.

“We appreciate all the work that the SCG trust has undertaken to accommodate an unprecedented amount of activity on the SCG in recent months and we will continue to work with them in regards to venue usage in the future.”

Fans will be happy with the move with Sydney enjoying healthy crowds during their games at the venue this year.

The relocated match will be Sydney FC’s fi-

nal home game of the season and is potentially crucial in the context of the race for the ALeague Premiers Plate.

The Sky Blues’ hopes of getting their hands on the 2018/19 Premiership silverware were kept alive by an injury time goa by midfield maestro Milos Ninkovicl against Melbourne Victory last weekend, giving them all three points with a 2-1 victory.

Tiger cubs on the title prowl

BALMAIN junior representative rugby league teams have roared into the 2019 NSWRL Junior Cup finals series.

The Tigers square off in elimination qualifying finals this Saturday in both the Under 16 Harold Matthews and Under 18 S.G Ball Cup competitions after experiencing mixed fortunes against Central Coast Roosters in the final preliminary round last weekend at Leichhardt Oval. (s/c 8pt Helvetica 55) Scott Kenna’s S.G Ball cubs lock horns with the sixth ranked Canterbury Bulldogs at Blacktown’s HE Laybutt Sports Complex and are eager to bounce back from a disappointing 42-14 loss to the high flying Roosters.

Balmain secured eighth spot in the Harold Matthews Cup series with an emphatic 30-16 victory over Central Coast – running in five tries in a solid tune up for the finals.

Ross Mignacca’s U/16 cubs turned in a courageous team performance to set up a showdown with the

fifth ranked Illawarra Steelers at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium at 12 noon.

The Tigers led 12-0 after ten minutes following converted tries by talented utility back Alex Miltiadous and boom back rower Brandon Tumeth before the Roosters hit back with tries by Michael Whitton and half back Jack Morrison.

Balmain stretched their lead to 18-10 before the break when promising fullback Ponipate Rakuli sliced through to score and Miltiadous added the extras.

Central Coast were the first to score after the interval when centre Wiremu Tibbutt burst throught tackles to nab the Roosters third try with the capable Morrison converting to bridge the deficit.

The cubs wrapped up the win and a finals berth with second half tries by lock Nathaniel Bakon and 15 year old

centre Tony Sukkar.

Miltiadous finished with a personal tally of 14 points with a try and five goals.

It was the Tigers’ fourth triumph in the U/16 Junior Cup series and lifted them into eighth spot on 10 points after the preliminary rounds.

CENTRAL COAST grabbed third spot on the S.G Ball Cup table after humbling the Tigers 42-14.

Strong running forward Riley Meyn turned in a powerhouse display for the Roosters - collecting three tries and creating havoc with his bustling runs.

The Tigers led early after a try by centre Josh Rizk before the Roosters dominated field position, piling on a flurry of points to lead 24-10 at the break.

The Central Coast youngsters went on with the job in the second half to prove they’ll be a force in the finals series.

Netball season off to flying start at Meadowbank

EASTWOOD Ryde Netball Association launched its 2019 winter season last Saturday with Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM shooting the first goal of the year.

Netball has been played in the Ryde community since 1954.

Hosted by ERNA, the Saturday winter competition brings together community clubs and schools with approximately 4,700 members registered.

In launching the season Mr Alexander said that kids’ sport promotes so many positive attributes such as team work, leadership, a healthy and active lifestyle, social engagement, resilience building and doing one’s best no matter the result.

“It all assists in preparing kids well for the wider world ERNA is a wonderful local association that has community at its heart,” he added.

“It’s brilliant organisational skills, honed

by Anne Doring OAM [currently ERNA Sponsorship and Grants Coordinator] over many years, has resulted in thousands of local families seeing value in participating.

“It’s organisations like ERNA that bind the community together in a positive and harmonious wellbeing that makes our area quite special,” he said.

Anne Doring said the players are all looking forward to another exciting season – and not just for the love of the game.

“As the population grows in this area, netball is becoming increasingly popular. It brings together players from diverse communities and backgrounds, united by their enjoyment of playing as a team.”

with the development of new facilities – including indoor netball courts at the Marsden Park High School site expected to draw even greater crowds to the sport when they open in 2021-22.”

Honours for Paralympian ace Madison and 16 year old soccer whiz Christian

PARALYMPIC wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario and schoolboy international soccer ace Christian Cirino are the final monthly winners in the 2018-19 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award.

The 25 year old wizard on wheels captured gold medals in the Women’s 1500m and Marathon T54 events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games while promising Cirino honed his skills on the Australian Schoolboys U/16s soccer tour of the United Kingdom back in January.

Both athletes will be recognised for their achievements at an Awards Night this Friday at North Ryde Golf Club at 6pm.

MADISON de ROZARIO is regarded as one of Australia’s finest Paralympic athletes who is on track for gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

She left her mark at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast when she clinched gold medals in the Women’s 1500m T54 and Women’s Marathon T54 events.

It has been a meteoric rise for the Western Australian native who is based at Wheelchair Sports NSW under the tutelage of Paralympic legend Louise Sauvage.

One of her greatest achievements was clinching the 2018 London Marathon women’s wheelchair title - becoming the first Australian to win the women’s event.

A determined Madison made a dramatic last dash sprint to claim the title in an impressive time of 1:42.58.

De Rozario has won the Oz Day 10K Wheelchair Road Race five times 2012, 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

At the age of four, Madison acquired transverse myelitis, a neurological disease inflaming the spinal cord, but it wasn’t until she was 12-years-old that she got her first look into the world of Paralympic sport.

After initially trying her hand at wheelchair tennis and basketball, Australian

Paralympic legend Frank Ponta encouraged her to take up racing.

As the youngest competitor in the 2008 Australian Paralympic Team, 14-yearold Madison was thrilled to be a part of the 4x100m relay team that won silver in addition to competing in the 100m final at the Beijing Paralympics..

Madison set a new Australian record three years later in the 200m at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand after recovering from illness...

The Western Australian came close to winning a second Paralympic medal at the 2012 London Games, crossing for fourth in the 800m ahead of her hero and training partner, Angela Ballard.

Madison admires Angela for her dedication and hard work and says that racing alongside her when she broke the 400m world record is by far her greatest sporting moment.

Under the coaching of wheelchair racing great Sauvage, Madison cemented her place among the world’s best when she won bronze in the 800m at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France and took out the world title in the same event in 2015 in Doha, Qatar.

At the 2016 Rio Paralympics, de Rozario won two silver medals.

She won her first individual medal at the Paralympics by winning the silver medal in the Women’s 800m T53 and was a member of the team that won silver in the Women’s 4 x 400 m Relay T53/54.

Madison also shone at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, collecting the gold medal in the Women’s 5000m T54, silver in the Women’s 800m T54 and

bronze in the Women’s 1500m T54.

LINING up against the cream of junior European soccer talent is a dream for any aspiring footballer.

For rising Putney soccer star Christian Cirino it became a reality in January when he toured the United Kingdom with the Australian Schoolboys U/16 team.

The promising left back, who plays with Blacktown City FC in the National Premier League Div 1 competition, honed his skills against the best juniors from England, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland during the three week sojourn.

Christian, a student at Holy Cross College Ryde, played four internationals against the Poms, Irish and Scots and another five matches against the Bristol City, Swansea City, Cheltenham Town, Fleetwood Town and Queens Park Rangers Academies and held himself in good stead against more experienced opponents.

The Ryde Saints junior product and his team mates found it hard to adapt to the freezing conditions but did themselves proud on foreign soil.

“We lost all four international games but managed to beat the Cheltenham Town (7-3), Fleetwood Town (5-2) and Queens Park Rangers Academies,” said Christian, who scored a goal in the 3-2 victory over Rangers.

Christian began his soccer career with Ryde Saints at the age of 5 before stints with Gladesville-Hornsby U/10 reps, Spirit FC, Marconi Stallions FC and current club Blacktown City.

He represented NSW All Schools at the National Championships in Shepparton Victoria where he turned in skilful performances to earn himself an Australian jumper.

“The trip was educational and a fascinating experience and one I’ll cherish forever,” revealed Christian.

“We played against Youth teams that were far stronger and more skilful than us but I learnt so much by just competing against more seasoned opponents and returned home a more polishd player,” he said.

Christian’s goal in 2019 is to force his way into the Blacktown U/20s and first grade Premier League sides with the view to earning a contract with an A League club down the track.

Gala Sports Star of Year Dinner

ESTEEMED sports broadcaster Steve Robilliard will MC the annual TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Gala Dinner on Friday May 3 at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

The experienced Robilliard has worked in the media for over 35 years, most of it in sports broadcasting.

He was at the Seven Network for six years before moving to the ABC for 22 years.

Since 2012 he has been freelancing in Australia and around the world.

Steve has worked on the past seven Summer Olympics, the last five Winter Olympics and the last seven Commonwealth Games.

As recently as last month, he was commentating on the Winter Universiade Games in Siberia. The Universiade is an international sports event for elite student athletes.
