Ryde Lantern Club Coach Trip

Ryde Lantern Club have organised a fun coach trip to the northern beaches on Monday January 20, 2020.

City of Ryde Lions Club have commenced their annual Christmas Food Appeal for the Ryde Branch Salvation Army.

Members have set up a special cage at Gladesville Village Shopping Centre outside Coles supermarket for the collection of non-perishable food items.

Seniors interested in learning more about computer use are invited to join the Moocooboola Computer Club, located at 44 Gladesville Road, Hunters Hill.

TALENTED young Classical Ballet student Kaya Weight (pictured) of North Ryde has been offered an apprenticeship with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

17 year old Kaya - the youngest member in the Company - grew up and attended school in North Ryde and recently reached the finals of the Australasian Ballet Award. She relocated to New Zealand earlier this year to pursue her dreams of being a professional ballerina. Kaya’s ballet apprenticeship is testimony of her natural talent and ability to inspire other youngsters to work hard and follow their dreams.

Students in the Bennelong federal electorate have competed in the third annual Bennelong Space in Schools STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Challenge sponsored by local bio-tech company Medtronic at Macquarie Park to design a bio-medical habitat for the surface of Mars.

The Australian Space Agency staff member Sian Keys, pictured top left, was a guest judge. Pictured right with category winners is Bennelong Federal MP John Alexander who hosted the event with Medtronic’s Managing Director Tim Fortin.

Peter Coleman invited JB to be his guest in State Parliament when his government finally moved to establish a NSW Ombudsman that I had advocated for some years with what he called in Hansard “The Booth amendment” that I would be fined $1,000 a day if I continued to call myself The Ombudsman! He claimed that was intended as a compliment to me and was later confirmed when I was honoured with one of the first Order of Australia memberships (AM)

Frank co-operated with JB in initiating the annual TWT Carols on the Common over 20 years ago which have continued with the support of North Ryde and Macquarie Park Rotary Clubs.

Frank had approached JB for help with the North Ryde RSL Youth Club Christmas party which had lost lots on money when washed out with big expenses for cancelled rides and entertainment at the Club grounds the previous year.

I suggested transferring the party to the new North Ryde Common and that we

gain public financial support under the auspices of the Youth Club headed by Frank and his enthusiastic committee. An innovation was the fireworks spectacular funded by North Ryde RSL Club at JB’s request.

This was the inaugural event held on the site after its acquisition from NSW Health after a campaign by then Gladesville MP and former Ryde Mayor Ivan Petch with JB and The Weekly Times. The new park or reserve was named after a competition by The Weekly Times when Jim Hull, OAM was mayor and preferred the name as it was historically on the site of the original North Ryde Common and had family association.

The first carols was an instant success though strong promotion in The Weekly Times and has continued unabated. After seven years the Youth Club committee wanted out and JB contacted North Ryde Rotary Club who accepted the invitation and now with Macquarie Park Rotary have continued very much thanks to the enthusiastic leadership of Roseanna Gallo OAM who has been able to sustain strong support of the

Letters to the Editor Support policy of immunisation Dear Sir,

I refer to the article in the TWT 4-12-19 whereCouncillors Zac Miles and Ben Collins requested Council adopt a policy requiring that all child services which apply for Council Grants have an immunisation policy.

Councillor Williams opposed the motion on the basis that parents have the right to refuse to share private information with the Council.

Should Council adopt such a Policy they will not know any individual child’simmunisation status. Playgroups will have the authority to obtain that information in the same way as other childcare organisations should they be included in Legislation.

Councillor Sanderson suggested it could breach the Anti Discrimination Act. I understand Hunters Hill Council is obtaining a legal opinion on the motion.

I am writing to you as a grandmother and concerned citizen. I am also atriple certificated Nurse - now retired. There is currently not a legal way for Playgroups to have the power to at least require they know whether or not a family is immunised when joining a Playgroup.

I am aware Councillor Collins is the father of four young children and his concerns are understood. He and his wife would additionally have feedback from other young parents.

I have heard similar concerns expressed by many about why are Playgroups exempt from the Legislation.I understand this is because Playgroups receive no

Government funding which provides the opportunity to request such information. Long Day Care, Child Care, pre schools etc. are covered by the Legislation.

Playgroups accept babies from birth until school age. They are the most vulnerable group in our community but have no similar protection.

I know non vaccinated children can not be refused attendance at Playgroups. If Playgroups could be required to have an immunisation policy to know the status of new enrolments if they wanted to apply for any Council funding this would be helpful especially in times such as the recent measles outbreak.

Below is a section of facts from NSW Health.

My concern is that if these are requirements for enrolment at child care centres why can’t babies and children attending Playgroups receive similar protection?

Is there a problem with Councils having a requirement that Playgroups who seek Community Grants have an immunisation program?

If not, why not. This would at least enable identification of non vaccinated children at Playgroups in the event of an outbreak of an infectious disease.

A simple yes/no question ‘Does your Playgroup have an immunisation program?’ is all that needs to be included in any applications for funding. Sadly it was only when vaccination was linked to Government subsidies the increase in vaccinations increased.

Do parents still have a choice to vaccinate their children?

Yes. Vaccination is not compulsory and parents will continue to have the choice whether or not to vaccinate their child.

However, conscientious objectors can no longer enrol their children in child care and will need to make alternative arrangements.

Are unimmunised children able to enrol in child care after 1 January 2018?

The only unimmunised children who can be enrolled in child care after 1 January 2018 are those who are on a recognised catch-up schedule.

Children who are unimmunised for a disease may be asked to stay at home if there is an outbreak of that vaccine preventable disease in a child care centre.

May I suggest that Council make further inquiries from appropriate sources to consider if all Councils could have a condition that Playgroups applying for grants follow the above procedure as required

by NSW Health for child care centres. I cannot accept it is ultra vires.

Bad laws are there to be challenged.

I hope Hunters Hill and other local Councils will look seriously at this issue. It may be suitable for discussion at a Local Government conference.

It is further suggested that our State Government review the Legislation to add Playgroups to the listed child care groups currently covered and protected.

I thank Councillors Collins and Miles for raising this most important issue with Hunters Hill Council. We do not want Australia to end up like Samoa where activists can be arrested or have red flags placed outside their homes if they are anti-vaccination.

Death of Chauvel Street pioneer

Dear Sir, Hello, I would like to report the sad news of the death of the last original resident of Chauvel Street, North Ryde, Gertrude Yeo (nee Holford), at age 95 after a short illness.

Gert’s house was at the centre of the famous Chauvel Street Christmas lights.

Family and residents of Chauvel Street are saddened by her passing. Her endless cheer and smile will be missed by all.

Funeral is on Thursday December 12, 10am at Northern Suburbs Crematorium.

The students chose the townships in the Richmond Valley because the local council has a sistership agreement with Hunters Hill.

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett said the letters will be distributed to Rappville and Leeville schools by Richmond Valley Mayor Robert Mustow.

He said the letter exchange was an opportunity to show people in the bush that children in Hunters Hill are thinking about them.

“They care about other students at the schools, who may have lost homes and property,” he said.

“One school even had a bushfire come right up to the school building itself.

“It’s times like these when communities need to come together and support each other.”

Gladesville RSL Club launches new apartments

GLADESVILLE RSL Community Club launched a new and long awaited apartment living initiative last Wednesday.

The launch was held at the club and the 34 independent living apartments are being designed

by Altira and will be built next to the club on the site of Jordan Hall.

Construction of the new nine storey development is due to start after May next year and is expected to take around two years to complete.

It will preserve the historic facade of Jordan Hall and will include a new youth club.

Gladesville RSL CEO Ashley Parmenter said income from the project will help sustain the RSL club.

“This is an exciting milestone in the 80

year history of this club,” he said.

“It can add an income stream and will be a valuable community asset with a modern youth club.”

He said the club does not intend to be a property developer which “builds and walks away” but will take pride in the new development and in the provision of affordable activities at the new youth club.

“This is a long term project that reflects the long term vision of the club,” he said.

The 34 apartments are for retirees over the age of 55 and have been designed

by Altira to be prestigious, safe and affordable with easy access to shops and

medical services in Gladesville.

Altira Sales Adviser Lynn Florence said her firm shares the values of “community and belonging” with the RSL Club.

Santa makes a splash in Epping

Santa visits the Epping Aquatic Centre.

THE CITY of Parramatta recently celebrated Christmas at the Epping Aquatic Centre’s annual Christmas Pool Party.

“The Epping Christmas Pool Party is the perfect place to celebrate the beginning of summer and the festive season with the local community,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

Proceeds from the party will go towards drought relief and the event featured a visit from Santa, a giant inflatable obstacle course, a petting zoo, a DJ, face painting, lucky door prizes, and games.

He said the Aquatic Centre is an ideal place to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.

“It is sure to be a wonderful day out for the whole family and don’t forget to bring your towel, sunscreen, and Christmas spirit!”

Families can also take part in free swim assessments to prepare for summer swimming.

The Epping Aquatic Centre is located in the picturesque Dence Park at 26 Stanley Road, Epping.

Grants available for seniors fitness OLDER RESIDENTS in the City of Parramatta Council are being offered an opportunity to help improve their physical health through a new Better Ageing Fitness Development Subsidy Program.

For the first time, qualified professionals working in the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA) can apply for a subsidy of up to $800 to undertake an eligible professional development course to better engage with people aged over 65.

“Being active greatly improves our overall health and wellbeing.

“Not only is Council’s new subsidy program a fantastic opportunity for local fitness instructors to expand their skills, but it also benefits the older members of our growing community.

“Council is dedicated to increasing the number and types of physical activities available to people aged over 65, including those from low socioeconomic and culturally diverse communities.”

The first round of applications open this week and close on January 31, followed

by two other rounds later in the year.

Council is delivering the Better Ageing Fitness Development Subsidy Program thanks to $289,000 in funding from Sport Australia’s Move It AUS - Better Ageing Grant Program.

The grant is not limited to mainstream sport and can include wellbeing fitness activities such as Tai Chi and yoga.

Much loved Ryde pre-school teacher retires ONE of the City of Ryde’s best known and most loved pre-school teachers retired last Friday after three decades of service.

North Ryde Community pre-school teacher Jill Kethel said goodbye to staff, parents and children at the school on Friday and told The Weekly Times she is proud to have been with the pre-school since it opened.

“When we first began as a community pre-school for children with additional needs we moved around from scout hall to scout hall before we eventually found our current building,” she said.

“Despite a lot of mov-

ing in these first years, we have always been fortunate to have very committed parents and staff who even brought their own toys and games from home to help us get started.”

The Birth of Jesus brings hope, says Ryde parish priest

THE BIRTH OF JESUS brings hope into the lives of people overcome by despair, local parish priest Father Greg Morgan said this week.

Father Greg is the parish priest of St Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Ryde and Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Gladesville.

In this Christmas interview with The Weekly Times he described the Nativity of Jesus Christ as a “living event” that – when taken to heart – can be life changing.

“I meet so many people who have lost hope,” he said.

“The world has dazzled us so that we do not see Jesus Christ anymore.”

He said the Nativity of Jesus is more than just a story, it is something all creation had been waiting for and longing for.

“It is the desire of God to break into our lives, to bring hope and to overcome despair,” he said.

In Catholic and other churches, the story of the Birth of Jesus is told on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “Look at the almost impossible circumstances in which Jesus was born,” Fr Greg said. “ These circumstances include the persecutions of Herod, the killing of infants, the flight of the Holy Family to Bethlehem as well the appearance of an angel to the shepherds and the remarkable journey of the three wise men.

He also spoke about a key theme in Christian teaching .. that no sin, despair or sense of alienation ... is greater than the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

“Everyone can welcome the Holy Child, the baby Jesus in the manger and hold Him to their heart.”

“So that at Christmas, especially, the Kingdom of God can be within us, bringing hope where there is despair.”

Mass is held at midnight in Catholic Churches on Christmas Eve. This year Fr Greg has this year placed the Nativity Scene inside St Charles Borromeo Church in front of the alter, rather than to one side of it, as is traditional.

His aim is to link The Nativity to the Mass and to the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

“Jesus physically and spiritually enters our lives and with this comes the gift of hope,” Fr Greg said.

This Nativity Scene at St Charles Borromeo Church incorporates the figures of the Holy Family, the shepherds, wise men and the angel in a new manger created by Fr Alfredo who used locally gathered materials to construct it.

“The figures themselves are very, very old and are part of the history of this historic Church and through the use of local materials to create the manager, Father Alfredo shows that Christ has come to dwell among us.”

Father Greg hopes that people who are lonely or feel alienated and dejected will come to Mass at Christmas.

“To those people who do not have a family there is the Holy Family for them to be with at Christmas and they have the family of our parish and that is somewhere where they can know they belong,” he said.

Christians of all denominations and nonChristians are welcome to attend.

Merger for Presbyterian Aged Care NSW & ACT with North Ryde Community Aid NORTH Ryde Community Aid recently celebrated their AGM and 40th anniversary of providing services in the City of Ryde at North Ryde RSL Community Club.

Hunters Hill Council gets ready for bushfire season Lane Cove Bushfire HUNTERS Hill Council is considering a plan to identify bushfire risks and prioritise hazard reduction works.

The Bushfire Risk Management Plan for Hunters Hill is expected to be introduced alongside measures in Lane Cove, Parramatta and Ryde with an aim to reduce the adverse impact of bushfires on life, property and the environment.

It also aims to manage fuel to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires while minimising any environmental or ecological

impacts.

Other objectives include a reduction in community vulnerability to bushfires by improved preparedness as well as measures to effectively contain fires.

A report to Council recommends placing a Bushfire Risk Management Plan on public exhibition until February 14.

IN OTHER NEWS, Hunters Hill Council is considering a draft policy to manage and regulate boat trailer parking on residential streets.

It responds to resident complaints about lack of parking and issues with visibility and traffic.

Council investigations have shown that trailers are often parked for extended periods of time without being moved and offenders are often people who do not live locally.

The Council is expected to consult with the local community and neighbouring councils on how to enforce such a policy.

ANYONE who has ever suffered with sore feet knows just how important your foot health is in keeping you moving.

With a quarter of all of the bones in your body being in your feet they can become vulnerable to stress if not looked after properly. If this continues for long you can start to develop pain and disability with your activities.

Coming into summer we tend to slip off our enclosed protective footwear and start to wear our lighter sandals.

Some of these types of footwear have far less support.

A common issue that we see as podiatrists is heel pain which can be caused by plantar fasciitis.

This is when there is inflammation in the plantar fascia at the area where it attaches to your heel bone.

There are a number of reasons that plantar fasciitis can develop. These include but are not limited to: 1. Your footwear may not be fitting

properly or not have enough support.

2. Your foot posture may be inclined to be more pronated or rolling inwards when you’re walking.

3. Your arch may collapse when you are fully weight bearing.

4. You have hypermobility in your foot so that it is not as stable when you are walking.

If you feel you are starting to develop heel pain that is not settling down and you are unsure as to how it has happened, it is important to see your podiatrist to have an assessment.

We will want to know about your frequency of movement, what makes it painful and what might relieve it.

We will assess your joint range of motion, the strength of the muscles in your lower limb, the angles in your foot that

change when you are standing compared to walking.

We compile these details to create a picture of why you may be experiencing discomfort.

with regular pain in your feet, know that this isn’t a normal consequence of movement and activity.

FOR many people Christmas can be a lonely time, but Reach Community Initiatives (RCI) wants to change all of that by hosting a FREE Community Christmas Dinner to help build a sense of community and bring joy to the community of Ryde.

No matter what your heritage or place of birth, Christmas is a time to celebrate together with the people of Ryde.

We all need opportunities to celebrate this important time together.

The dinner will be held next Tuesday December 17 in the North Ryde School of Arts Community Centre, 201 Cox’s Road, North Ryde at 6:30pm just above the library.

This family friendly event, at an accessible venue, includes Christmas carols, great food, and giveaway hampers for those in need and the night will be lots of fun.

Macarthur FC’s aspirations a headache for Sky Blues

A-LEAGUE newcomer Macarthur FC is continuing preparations for its debut next season, with its playing squad aspirations including an attempt to poach Sydney FC crowd favourite Milos Ninkovic (pictured).

HUNTERS HILL Physie capped off yet another stellar year with club founder Kate O’Sullivan’s daughters - Ellie and Sarah - winning back to back State titles at the recent Edith Parsons School of Physical Culture Grand Final held at the prestigious Sydney Town Hall.

The O’Sullivan siblings were joined by young protege Amelia McLachlan, pictured below, who also won the 7 years section of the event for the Hunters Hill sporting organisation.

Both O’Sullivan girls have joined their mother in teaching roles at the successful Club and played a significant role in young Amelia’s win. ”Amelia’s success was a culmination of her own dedication and hard work, combined with the nurturing environment that the Club offers”, said head teacher Kate O’Sullivan. ”It was such a joy for me to know that my own girls had a role to play as well with their warmth, guidance and support encouraging Amelia to be the best she could be”, Kate said. ”Empowering girls and women is a big part of our sport and I’m so proud to have my daughters by my side, setting the standard and making a difference by encouraging their peers to grow in confidence through performance and persistence,” she added.

Ninkovic has on numerous occasions stated that he’d like to see the end of his playing days at Sydney FC but the offer from Macarthur will mean management at the Sky Blues must sharpen their pencils and commit some serious cash if they’re to retain the Serbian midfield maestro.

Sydney has reportedly offered Ninkovic a one-year contract extension at around his current salary of around $500,000 while Macarthur are understood to be offering a two-year deal at closer to the $750,000-mark.

Coming up with a competitive counter-offer will be an extremely difficult task for Sydney FC. With the club’s salary cap leaving little room to move, the Sky Blues playing squad is already expected to be several players lighter, with up to a dozen players off contract and likely to be poached by other clubs keen to get their hands on Sydney’s championshipwinning talent.

Ninkovic confirmed he’d received an offer during a television interview after Sunday night’s 5-1 hammering of Brisbane Roar..

“To be honest, I’ve got the offer from the new club. I’ve said many times that I’d like to end my career here but you never know,” he said.

And despite the season being less than a third of the way through, he said a decision needed to be made quickly, undertaking to make a decision within two weeks.

“It’s best to decide as soon as possible. It’s better for my teammates to make a decision in the next two weeks,” Ninkovic, considered one of the league’s

best players, said.

“For me it’s very important to make a decision in the next two weeks. I want to just be focused on the game, that’s the only thing I want now.”

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica said the interest in Ninkovic was no surprise.

“I am not surprised, he is a quality player,” Corica said.

“When you have success, this is going to happen. Your top players, the other clubs want them.”

He said the club would do everything it could to keep him at the Sky Blues.

“We want to keep Ninko, we have been negotiating with Ninko for a while now.

We will do our best to keep him,” Corica said..

“He is a great guy, I have a great relationship with him.

Corica believes the Sky Blues can improve from last year’s AFC Champions League finish following a tough 2019 draw.

The Sky Blues were drawn against some of the best teams in Asia, including the reigning Chinese and Japanese Champions, and felt hard done by to only to pick up three draws in the group stage.

“It’ll be a good challenge for some of the new boys who haven’t played in it,” Corica said.

SYDNEY Cricket Club have been rocked by a seasonending back injury to young pace spearhead Hugh Sherriff (pictured).

The 18 year old quick will miss the remainder of the 2019-2020 NSW Premier Cricket first grade campaign due to stress fractures in his back.

Sherriff’s injury is a cruel blow to the Tigers’ trophy hopes in all three formats – the Belvidere Cup first grade premiership; the First Grade Limited Overs Cup and the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup competitions.

Young gun Hugh has also been ruled out of the Cricket Australia X1 side that is currently competing at the National Under 19 Cricket Championships in Perth.

A disappointed Sherriff was primed for a big summer with the new ball but now faces a lengthy stint of rehab on the sidelines.

The Tigers however will welcome back promising all rounder Harry Manenti for the Premier Cricket clash with CampbelltownCamden this weekend after his rep commitments with the NSW U/19 Metro team.

Sydney officials will also monitor the fitness of skipper Dan Smith (hamstring) and top order batsmen Anthony Mosca (lower back) and Suffan Hassan (hamstring) after the trio missed the Tigers’ 49 run loss to Sutherland last weekend at Drummoyne Oval.

Panthers star Hayden Dillon named in Australian Men’s Hockey Development squad RYDE-Hunters Hill Hockey Club’s talented midfielder Hayden Dillon (pictured) has been rewarded for consistent performances with selection in Australia’s Mens Hockey National Development Squad for the next 12 months.

The 21 year old Panther cub was a deserved choice after skilful displays for the Junior Kookaburras and the triumphant NSW Pride team that recently won the inaugural Hockey One National championship.

The Men’s National Development Squad comprises athletes on the verge of breaking into the national senior program with an eye to being selected for the Kookaburras at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, 2023 World Cup in India and Paris Olympics in 2024.

All 19 athletes selected in the 2020 Men’s National Development Squad competed in the inaugural Hockey One League.

Kookaburras Head Coach Colin Batch said the athletes’ performances in the new reinvigorated domestic competition played a significant role in their selections, and he has been impressed with the level of the players who are knocking on the door.

“There is really good depth in Australian men’s hockey at the moment and the athletes that have been selected have proven they have the quality

to be in the mix for the Kookaburras,” said Batch.

“The coaching staff and High Performance department see this group of athletes as integral in driving the Kookaburras to ongoing improvement and success, and being selected in this squad clearly sends the message that they are very much in contention.”

As part of the National Development Squad, athletes will continue to train in their home daily training environment with their National Training Centre (NTC) programs, under the guidance of the national program coaches.

Sharp shooter Sophie selected in Netball World Youth Cup squad

OUTSTANDING Eastwood-Ryde goal attack Sophie Dwyer (pictured) has taken a giant step towards representing Australia at the 2021 Netball World Youth Cup in Fiji.

The 18 year old sharp shooter ,who hails from Eastwood, is one of six athletes from the NSW Institute of Sport to be named in the 24-strong squad selected in preparation for the Netball World Youth Cup which is taking place in Suva.

The selection of these athletes has been based on performances in Suncorp Super Netball, the Deakin University Australian Netball League, the National Netball Championships and training camps throughout 2019.

Exciting prospect Dwyer, who helped Eastwood-Ryde clinch the NSW State Premier League Opens championship this year, will be joined by fellow NSW reps Clare Iongi, Matisse Letherbarrow, Annie Miller, Amy Sligar and Matilda McDonell – now contracted with the Giants NSWIS Head Coach Nerida Stewart is proud of the athletes selected from her program.

“These young women have earned their spots on the Australian World Youth Cup squad,” said Nerida. ”They’ve worked incredibly hard over the past season and I’m excited to see them excel” World Youth Cup team coach Kylee Byrne said she’s delighted with the spread of young talent coming through the Netball Australia pathway.

“The future of Australian netball is looking very bright with the calibre of athletes myself and the selectors were presented with during this process,” she said.

“It’s exciting to be kicking off our World Youth Cup campaign with such a strong squad and I’m really looking forward to working with this group over the next 19 months to bring home that Cup in 2021.”

The squad will first meet at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra on Friday February 14 for a four-day training camp that will commence Netball Austral-

ia’s 2021 Netball World Youth Cup campaign.

A second squad selection will then be made at the beginning of August 2020 and these athletes will represent Australia on a tour of Fiji later in the year where the squad will play several matches to prepare them for international competitionAustralia has won the Netball World Youth Cup four times, in 1988, 1996, 2000 and 2009.

New Zealand has also won the event four times, including the last two titles in 2013 and 2017.

Ten out of the 18 current Samsung Australia Diamonds squad members played in a World Youth Cup tournament earlier in their careers.

Tigers halfback Luke Brooks has been named in an extended 2020 NSW Origin squad by coach Brad Fittler as preparations begin for next year’s series.

The club’s Player of the Year for the past two season Luke has been named as part of a 34-man NSW Blues squad which will assemble at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence on December 12 and 13 for a two-day camp.

24-year-old Brooks featured as part of the Emerging Blues squad last year alongside Tigers teammate Robert Jennings but has seen himself earn a step up in 2020 off the back of another

good season at club level.
