I come from South Kanara, India and I have been residing in Sydney with my husband and son for over 30 years. I am the grandniece of Isidore John Coelho (1878-1968) who was the author of the famous legendary Mangalore cookery tome of the 1930s still in print - “The Chef” (Konkani version ‘Randhpi’).

I was taught to cook the traditional way by my mother and grandmother. The high consumption of added sugar is strongly linked to obesity, which is a risk factor for many health conditions including heart disease, Type Two diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.

There is also increasing evidence to suggest that added sugar increases the risk for metabolic syndrome and a fatty liver.

Rates of obesity are increasing rapidly with around two thirds of Australians said to be overweight and obese.

One of the main culprits is due to added sugar consumption, especially from sugar-sweetened beverages.

These types of beverages make it easy to quickly consume a high number of calories.

These calories are considered “empty” as they provide no nutrition and don’t deter from eating calories from food, therefore an individual consumes an extra amount of calories.

The average Australian consumes around 60 grams of sugar per day, which exceeds the recommended 25-30 grams according to the AHA. Reading the ingredient list is important and the higher up the list sugar is, the more sugar the product contains.

Be careful and educate yourself on the different names sugar can be disguised as on a label.

Sugar consumption can be an addiction! An important message to take not of, is that overtime you increase your intake, adding more and more as time goes by. Take away point, start to monitor your intake to gain a better understanding of where you can reduce your sugar intake and better your overall health.

Letters to the Editor Pedestrian safety on overpass Dear Sir,

Congratulation to TWT and Hunters Hill Council for the new safe footpath for Hunters Hill School students accessing the overpass.

However, there is still significant risk to all pedestrians using the very busy overpass, because there are no vehicle barriers along the footpath of the overpass itself.

This is a real danger as demonstrated by an accident two weeks ago where a vehicle mounted the footpath and crashed into the barrier which prevented it from plunging 10m metres or so, onto Burns Bay Road.

The impact is still visible as it badly dented the barrier which now has hazard tape on it pending its repair.

Fortunately there appears to have been no pedestrian in its path, otherwise they would have been squashed between the vehicle and the barrier with possible fatal consequences.

I have witnessed other accidents as drivers run red lights to pass though this highly congested overpass.

Could the TWT please continue their very effective campaign on pedestrian safety and get some pedestrian protection barriers on the overpass?

Several years ago we had a long curtain on a sliding track installed.

Due to the slides jamming badly we contacted the original company that installed it requesting it be rectified.

Their representative called and suggested total replacement was required

Global warming beats cooling Dear Sir,

Climate change was previously known as “global warming” until global warming stopped.

It was cheap and reliable energy which gave us our wonderful lifestyle, and expensive and unreliable wind and solar energy will impoverish and kill too many of us.

It is an indisputable fact that most excess deaths occur in winter and this will increase as the poor and elderly won’t be able to afford to heat themselves and more will succumb to respiratory illness.

This will become a major issue when GLOBAL COOLING takes hold in coming years.

There have been a huge number of peer reviewed scientific papers in recent years which have concluded this as most likely given that the sun is now entering a period of quietness that corresponds to the period more than 200 years ago in which the world experienced the “little ice age”.

Smalls Road Public School, colloquially dubbed the “Colosseum of Learning” or “the donut” has now opened to 60 students.

This site of the old Ryde High School that should never have been shut down has finally been reopened after 34 years as a much needed primary school for our area.

Smalls Road Public School highlights the work of Victor Dominello and the State Government in converting Ryde into the “education powerhouse of NSW” and builds on his promises from last year’s State election victory.

The Ryde Renaissance has only just begun, there’s so much more to do.

Next up is the Meadowbank Education Precinct, the Macquarie Park education precinct and so much more.

Beer tax sting cuts deeper Dear Sir,

Having a beer with mates.

Life doesn’t get much better or more basic. So why is it so expensive?

The answer is simple... Tax. A new report by economist and Emeritus Professor Kym Anderson AC from the University of Adelaide, commission by the Brewers Association of Australia, compares Australian beer tax with OECD and EU countries.

Of the world’s advanced in-

dustrial countries, Australians pay the fourth highest beer tax. From Monday February 3 2020 it went up, again, thanks to an automatic CPI increase that slugs beer drinkers every February and August.

Today Australians now pay $2.26 per litre of alcohol.

Looking at countries we typically compare ourselves with, Aussies pay many, many times more in beer tax.

In Australian dollar terms, we are paying: 17-times more than Germany ($0.13), 15-times more than Spain ($0.15), 7-times more than the US ($0.31), 6-times more than Canada ($0.35), more than 4-times that of France ($0.50), and approaching double that of New Zealand ($1.26).

It’s getting to the point that having a beer with your mates is beyond the reach of ordinary Australians.

By far the biggest cost in the price of a typical Australian beer is tax. It’s not the ingredients, production costs, advertising, transport or even retail overheads and profits... it’s Australian Government tax.

A massive 42 percent of the retail price on a carton of beer, is tax. Of the $52.00 retail price for a typical carton of beer at 4.9 percent alcohol, $21.84 goes to the taxman.

Now it’s gone up again.

Most Aussies simply are not aware they are being hit so hard, or so often, with beer tax. Beer tax has been going up every six months for the last 35 years. This latest slug is the 71st consecutive hike.

Beer tax is now out of control. Simply freezing the six-monthly CPI increases will only lock-in the unreasonably high tax Australians are already paying. The rate of beer tax needs to be addressed if punters are to get genuine relief.

Hunters Hill Guest Column How extraordinary women inspire girls to pursue a dream in science GLADESVILLE’S John Croucher writes about the contribution women have made and continue to make, to science ..

With International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2020 taking place on February 11, it is timely to recognise the extraordinary achievements of women in a wide range of scientific disciplines.

It is a glimpse into women’s lives that is indeed inspirational for girls considering a career in science.

There are common themes across the lives of these women - often an early passion for the subject that became their life’s work, and an abiding curiosity.

This hunger to learn, and to solve problems, was essential for scientific pursuit, which requires patience, observation and application, the essence of empirical work, often repeated many, many times to test sometimes fragile, and bold, hypotheses.

For every one of the women, we see a story of incredible, persistent, even stubborn, determination and courage.

The example of Italian chemist Agnes Pockels, born in 1862 in Venice, is illustrative.

Agnes had a passionate interest in natural science, especially physics, but in her day, women were not allowed to enter universities.

with John Croucher Her younger brother was, and he passed on what he could, giving access to his textbooks.

Through curiosity and application, Agnes measured the surface tension of water by devising an apparatus known as the ‘slide trough’, a key instrument in the emerging discipline of ‘surface science’.

Consider also the story of Austrian physicist, Lise Meitner.

With the chemist Otto Hahn, she discovered several new isotopes and, in 1918, while studying radioactivity, they discovered the element ‘protactinium’.

In 1926, Lise became the first woman in Germany to assume a post of full professor in physics, at the University of Berlin, where British astronomer Caroline Herschell, born in 1750, was credited with discoveries of eight comets and locating a number of new nebulae and star clusters.

German astronomer Maria Kirch was not so lucky.

On 21 April 1702, Maria discovered the so-called ‘Comet of 1702’, but her husband took the credit for it.

It was not until 1710, the year that he died, that he finally admitted the

truth, and Maria was then deemed to be the first woman to have discovered a comet.

United States geologist Florence Bascom spoke of the motivating force in scientific inquiry, that is seen in the stories of many scientific women, ‘The fascination of any search after truth lies not in the attainment … but in the pursuit, where all the powers of the mind are absorbed in the task.

One feels oneself in contact with something that is infinite and one finds a joy that is beyond expression in ‘sounding the abyss of science’ and the secrets of the infinite mind.’

The recently released book Woman of Science: 100 inspirational lives (Amberley Publishing, UK) outlines the wonderful stories of one hundred such women, spanning five centuries.

And for each woman included the cameo is but a short snippet of a rich, lived life, chasing a hunger from their youth in pursuit of answers.

This volume is an example of, and an inspiration for, the thousands upon thousands of women in science yet to have their stories shared.

Hunters Hill ratepayers urged to have a say about new marina development HUNTERS HILL ratepayers are being urged to have their say about a new development application for the Gladesville Bridge Marina.

Council staff have identified several issues of concern about the proposed development which seeks approval for alterations and additions to the Marina berth layout to provide overall storage of 130 vessels, with 15 swing moorings and 115 floating berths.

It also proposes the removal of 29 swing moorings, the retention of 15 swing moorings and the construction of 65 new floating berths which will increase the total number of berths from 50 to 115 Other concerns include the cessation of slipway activities, the demolition of slipway rails and a demolition of the internal office mezzanine structure within the slipway area.

Many Drummoyne resi-

dents are opposed to the proposed creation of eight new valet car parking spaces, which they claim will add more traffic on local roads.

Hunters Hill Clr Ross Williams has been an outspoken opponent of the Marina proposal and fears the aim on the development application is to bring more, larger boats.

He wants Hunters Hill ratepayers to oppose it.

“This is going to be intrusive, much bigger than the existing marina bringing in much bigger vessels into a very narrow waterway,” he told The Weekly Times.

“This means it is likely to have an impact of ferries and other boats, particularly the proposed removal of the slipway fa-

cilities.”

He said that although the proposed development is in the City of Canada Bay, Hunters Hill residents will be worse off for it.

Australia’s largest seniors’ festival is coming to The Weekly Times Territory this month.

Called ‘Love to Celebrate’, the 2020 NSW Seniors Festival will deliver hundreds of free and heavily discounted events, workshops, and performances for seniors which feature more than a dozen events in Hunters Hill.

“With the diverse range of experiences on offer, seniors are set to be inspired to be active, socialise, and share their skills and wisdom, all while connecting with our community,” Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennet said.

Hunter’s Hill Council and Sydney Community Services are partnering some events and one of the festival highlights will be a Celebrating the Urban Bush festival to be held at Hunters Hill Town Hall on Tuesday, February 18.

Every guest will receive a free native seedling and guests can RSVP by phoning 9427 6425.

At the Henley Community Centre Bowling Green, members of social enterprise group The Happy Hens are serving morning tea in the garden, with singing by Riverside Preschool students.

This event will be held from 9.30am to 11.30am on Friday February 21, for the cost of a gold coin donation, in support of the on-site comunity garden.

Healthy activities in Hunters Hill

Hunters Hill seniors will be encouraged to get active to promote better health, as part of NSW Seniors Festival celebrations.

The NSW Seniors Festival is presented by the NSW Government and runs from Wednesday February 12th to Sunday February 23rd.

Among the more than a dozen activities planned in Hunters Hill are many that encourage older residents of the local government area to exercise.

A Hunter’s Hill Council Community Profile shows that about 10 per cent of the municipality’s residents are seniors (aged 70 to 84), compared with about seven per cent for Greater Sydney.

About 11 per cent of the Hunters Hill population is

aged 60 to 69, while the elderly (aged 85 and over) make up about five per cent.

Staying physically active is the single most important thing you can do to stay fit and independent as you get older, according to NSW Health initiative Active and Healthy.

Seniors Festival activities in Hunters Hill encouraging exercise include Zumba dance classes at All Saints Church Hall from February 17 to February 19 and “come and try” gentle exercise classes at the Uniting Church Hall in Boronia Park to be held from February 18

until February 21.

Tai Chi classes to promote health and relaxation will be held at Hunters Hill Croquet Club from February 18 to February 20.

The Croquet Club will also host a come and try the game day on Saturday February 22.

At Gladesville Road Community Centre on Tuesday, February 25, older women will be encouraged to challenge their body and brain in a strength and balance class.

Exercises of the mind will also be explored in University of the Third Age events at

CA Fairland Hall, with subjects focusing on Stephen Hawking on Monday February 17 and the possibilities for life existing outside earth on February 24.

A Seniors Hub Open Day will be held on Wednesday, February 19 at 42 Gladesville Road will give community members an opportunity to see what a Seniors Respite Day Centre looks like, as well as a chance to participate in wellness activities.

A WELCOME BAIL OUT ! The Eastwood business community shows support for the City of Ryde motion during last Tuesday night’s emergency council meeting.

Eastwood’s virus scare bail out challenges councillors A RESCISSION MOTION was lodged against a council bail out plan that offers small businesses in Eastwood a half million dollars to compensate them for losses linked to the coronavirus scare.

The City of Ryde passed the bail out motion by six votes to one last week despite questions from councillors Trenton Brown (Lib), Clr Roy Maggio (Ind) and Dr Peter Kim (ALP) who are concerned about the proposed bail out’s fairness, equity and logistics.

The rescission motion was lodged by Ryde Liberal leader Clr Sarkis Yedelian alongside councillors Kim and Maggio.

The amount of money available to each business in the Small Business Hardship Fund To Support Eastwood Town Centre is proposed to be up to $2,000 per business and will be determined by council staff based on claims on lower customer attendances during the scare.

Under the proposal, businesses will have 28 days to apply for it, with the procedure expected to be posted on the council website.

Mayor Jerome Laxale also backed a proposal to waive the cancellation fee specified in Council’s adopted “Fees and Charges” for swim schools and swimming carnivals for the period January to March

as well as inclusive waive the notice period required under Council’s Venue Hire Application for cancellations.

The bail out proposal followed a heated debate where Mayor Jerome Laxale opposed the proposed extension of the grant to businesses outside Eastwood on the grounds that Eastwood had been specifically named in the media as having a local coronavirus victim.

“I know how scared businesses are by this misinformation and I am concerned this false information has spread like wildfire,” he said.

Councillor Sarkis Yedelian OAM expressed concern that rumours about Eastwood’s coronavirus victim may have been motivated by racism.

“This scaremongering is very dangerous .. but I believe there is a virus and that this virus is misinformation and it is a dangerous virus.”

Councillor Brown took up the argument about the “fake media” scare but

stressed that it had also impacted on shops in Five Ways and Marsfield, which should also share in the bail out money.

“The truth is that it was only one person suspected, not confirmed, but suspected of having the virus,” he said.

Councillor Maggio conceded that Eastwood had become a ghost town but pointed out that other shopping strips had lost trade to other strains of virus and also deserve council support.

“Putney has a disease and it is called Parking Disease because there is no parking.. this support for small business should not just be concentrated in Eastwood, for political mileage.”

Mayor Laxale described Clr Maggio comments as unacceptable.

“I find it absurd you are talking about Putney when we have an 80 per cent downturn in business in Eastwood and it is Eastwood that has been specifically named in the false media.”

“All we will be doing is excluding a whole lot of people in Ryde,” he said “In my one medical centre in Eastwood we have three doctors, so that is three businesses ?

“So how are you going to distribute the money ?

“And what about all the small businesses that are run from home, what about all the hair stylists who work from home, it is important we follow principles and be just.”

An amendment put by Clr Maggio for an immediate workshop for shop owners was lost.

Councillor Brown also moved an unsuccessful Dissent Motion against Mayor Laxale when he put the hardship fund motion to a vote before Clr Maggio had an opportunity to have his (corrected) amendment debated.

The Emergency Council Meeting was attended by speakers from Eastwood who outlined how the virus scare has devastated small business.

“Some businesses have shut and at Eastwood Public School, which has an enrolment of 900 students, only 300 students turn up for the first week of school,” Eastwood Chamber of Commerce President Vic Tagg said.

Hugh Lee OAM said events for Chinese speaking senior citizens had been cancelled – causing social isolation – and the Eastwood night markets had shut down for three weeks.

Susan Feng from the Pheonix Beauty Group said the virus scare could not have hit Eastwood at a worse time.

“Lunar New Year should be our busiest time but since this report of the virus our business has dropped by more than 50 per cent.”

Restaurants and food outlets are often the hardest hit during a health scare and Dr Felix Lo from the Eastwood Chamber of

Commerce reported the comments of a local restaurant owner.

“My customers are not buying my lobsters, I might as well drown my sorrows in my lobster tanks.”

Councillor Simon Zhou said that he hopes the bail out will not only help struggling shop owners pay the rent, it will also inspire confidence in Eastwood.

“If local government does nothing, Eastwood dies .. this is why this motion is an emergency motion and why this relief money must be distributed as quickly as possible.”

Q: How has the the virus affected you?

A: I am worried. I was born in Wuhan, I went to school in Wuhan. It breaks my heart because I have heard about family friends in Wuhan confirmed to have the virus.

Q: Why is Wuhan significant?

A: Wuhan is at the centre of China and is the transport hub of China, connecting major cities that include Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. There are even direct flights from Wuhan to Sydney. At the moment Wuhan is in lockdown, people cannot leave and people cannot come in. This has a major impact on the rest of China.

Q: Are the Chinese authorities doing enough?

A: The government is doing everything it can. It built two new hospitals in less than ten days, an extraordinary achievement.

There is a very high efficiency rate in China but it is also important to understand that there is also panic across China and everyone at every level appreciates the significance of this. Since the first case was reported in January, we’ve been fortunate in Australia to have had an early warning from China, especially as this coincides with Lunar New Year when families travel to and from China to be with their families.

Q: How is the Chinese speaking community in Eastwood responding to the epidemic?

A: There is a Wuhan community in Eastwood and it was helping us pre-

pare for Lunar New Year when the first reports from Wuhan hit social media.

Right now we are encouraging one another and people are praying in their own religions, especially Buddhists and Christians, for the people of Wuhan and for each other.

Q: Fewer people are dining in local restaurants – particularly seafood restaurants – why is this?

A: It was first reported the virus broke out in a seafood market in Wuhan. It has also been rumoured that the virus was caused by people eating a wild animal that should not be eaten, but I am sceptical about this because Wuhan is a modern, advanced city and it would be highly unlikely that such a practice would occur there. Of course, our restaurants in Eastwood exceed the highest possible standards of quality control and I have the utmost confidence that cus-

tomers will return.

Q: A lot of people in Eastwood are wearing masks, is this an over reaction?

A: I understand exactly why our local community has panicked. It is also part of Chinese and Korean culture to wear masks when there is a community health problem, not only for personal protection but out of respect for protecting others. I know that the Health Department advises that wearing masks is not effective and that masks only offer protection for a few hours. Nor do I think masks are a long term solution but they are important because they give people a psychological sense of safety. I appreciate people who are wearing masks.

Q: What is Eastwood doing to help Wuhan?

A: To give but one example, the owner of Expertise Dental donated 150,000 surgical masks to Wu-

han and the people there use them every day. I am honoured this dentist contacted me and I was able to find a way to get the masks to Wuhan.

Q: Apart from a cure, what else can be done about the virus?

A: The best solution is for the whole world to work together and support (world health authority) campaigns to promote research and to improve hygiene standards in both developed and developing nations.

Q: This year was your first year in charge of the Eastwood Lunar New Year celebration and you must feel devastated to have to cancel it.

A: Cancellation was a hard decision to make but it was the responsible decision. I hope we can still have a festival later this year, perhaps during the Moon Festival. And it remains my hope that Wuhan will recover.

Lord Mayor welcomes light rail to Rydalmere

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer has welcomed the commencement of major works on the Parramatta Light Rail project following an official sod turning at Rydalmere last week.

“It is great to see this critical infrastructure project moving one step closer to becoming a reality with the initial phases of construction underway,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

“While we appreciate this period of construction will cause some disruption, we will reap the long-term benefits of having a light rail network that will better connect our City and serve the needs of the community well into the future.

In October, the City of Parramatta Council announced that it would waive the outdoor dining fees for cafes, restaurants and bars along Parramatta’s iconic ‘Eat Street’ during construction of the Parramatta Light Rail.

Parramatta Council joins the plastic free waste revolution

The City of Parramatta Council’s Farmers Market will be going plastic free .

From January this year, stallholders and food vendors will begin phasing out single-use plastic packaging and utensils and replacing them with reusable or compostable alternatives during the Farmers Market PlasticFree Campaign.

Council will also launch a 10-week compostable waste trial during the Plastic-Free Campaign.

Until April, Council will place green-lid bins at the Farmers Market for the disposal of food scraps and other organic waste. EarthPower Technologies in Western Sydney will then transform this waste into sustainable products such as green energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

“About 80 per cent of the waste currently generated at the Farmers Market can be composted, but instead it ends up in general waste bins,” Lord Mayor Dwyer said.

“Our compostable waste trial will help us reduce our ecological footprint but we need your help to succeed.

“Make sure you only throw organic waste and food scraps in bins with a green lid.”

Parramatta Farmers Market is held at Centenary Square every Friday, offering a variety of food stalls and fresh Australian produce.

Centenary Square is the site of the City’s original food market dating back to 1791.

The Council has committed to phasing out the use of single-use plastics from its operations and events by 2021, as outlined in its Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2019-2023.

The Council has also committed to delivering programs that encourage the community and local businesses to steer away from single-use plastics.

One of the Council’s biggest annual events, Parramatta Lanes, last year scrapped single-use drinking cups, plastic straws, and plastic drinking bottles.

Council’s Farmers Market Plastic-Free Campaign was endorsed by student delegates at the What’s Up West Youth Conference in November.

Open Letter to Transdev The NSW Liberal National Government has spent the last nine years striving to deliver a better transport system for the people of NSW. Often, this has been based on successful public and private partnerships with companies such as Transdev. My constituents are very grateful for the reliable services Transdev has maintained since taking over the management of the F3 and F8 ferry routes.

I also applaud Transdev on their decision to review the timetabling and routes of the ferry services. As my constituents are well aware, there is significant room for improvement in regards to the efficiency of the connections as well as scope for increased services.

However, my constituents have made clear since the consultation period began last December that they have significant concerns about the current proposals.

The people of the Lane Cove electorate have been patient and constructive with their feedback focusing on two main points: ¡ ¡

The proposal to remove direct services to Circular Quay on either the F3 or F8 ferry routes.

Significant problems with the community consultation process, especially the lack of notice for commuters and the technical difficulties experienced in trying to provide feedback.

I hope these factors can be resolved quickly and successfully. In the meantime, I am working with the Member for Drummoyne, Mr John Sidoti, and the Member for Ryde, Mr Victor Dominello, to ensure the proposals are improved.

We will be meeting with the Minister for Transport, Mr Andrew Constance, to deliver the thousands of signatures with which we have been presented and communicate the importance the ferry services hold to our communities.

Northern Cemeteries Chief Executive Officer Pauline Tritton says expanding the site’s existing Jewish burial space has been a high priority.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this new area as we continually strive to serve and cater for all religious, ethnic and cultural requirements within our community,” Mrs Tritton said.

The consecration ceremony was conducted by Rabbi Yoram Ulman, head of Sydney Beth Din, the Orthodox religious court.

It followed biblical tradition and Jewish custom with the rabbi leading a walk along the newly allocated Jewish section perimeter seven times.

Psalms were recited to link the ground to a spiritual purpose, and the

ram’s horn (shofar) was blown following each circuit.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies Chief Executive Vic Alhadeff spoke about the religious significance of the new cemetery.

“Jews are only permitted to be buried on ground which has been consecrated specifically and solely for Jewish burial,” he said.

Police warn of a break and enter spate across Epping!

A SPATE of thefts in Epping has prompted Ryde Police Area Command to issue a warning to residents to lock up their homes and garages.

“Over the past few weeks there have been a several Break and Enters across Ryde’s PAC, particularly in the Epping area,” police warned.

“Thieves have gained entry through open windows and, in some instances, while the victims have been home.

“We remind residents to lock their windows, in particular if they live in a two story home and not to leave windows open downstairs,

view and lock their vehicles even if it is on their driveway!

“The simple message is LOCK IT and leave NO VALUABLES in sight. Otherwise you could be the next victim, in what is a preventable crime.”

Stephen Bott has been appointed to the role of Director of Coaching for the Gladesville Ravens Women’s and Men’s Football for the 2020 Season.

Mr Bott comes to the role with many years of experience and exposure to youth football across the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan. He holds the AFC/FFA C Licence Youth and is currently completing his B Licence.

The Club said he brings a strong knowledge base across youth development which is heavily influenced by the knowledge he gained through connections to professional club academies in Japan and his role as a Coerver Coach in Sydney.

“Stephen has worked from grassroots through to Womens’ NPL first grade, and is currently the Academy Director for the Gladesville Ravens NPL program and u15s Head Coach.” He said his aim is to develop aspiring players. “The chance to make a difference at grassroots level is what attracted me to this opportunity. “I want to work hard to support the volunteer coaches that are the life blood of grassroots football, and to help build a pathway in the Gladesville area for the players that want to take football more seriously and progress as far as they can into the National Premier Leagues and beyond.”

Gladesville Ravens welcome an acclaimed director of coaching to run a series of ‘coaching the coach’ sessions and ‘teams training’ sessions.

“This will offer all teams unique training systems which no other team in the NSWF can offer and, in the process, will develop Ravens Football to new levels.”

In other news, the Gladesville Ravens have become the largest Netball Club in the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association in 2019 with 43 teams registered.

The Raven’s strength comes from the development of young players from the ‘Net Set Go’ program for seven to nine year olds as well as the pre-fitness training, night competition and ‘Try Netball’ programs.

A recent and unexpected surge in the digital age popularity of village cricket in England could prove to be an inspiring example to our local clubs.

English village cricket has become an online phenomenon as people from all over the world log on to watch the highlights of recreational matches.

Among successful village clubs is the Sanderstead Cricket Club from the idyllic county of Surrey, which now has more than 2.5 million views on YouTube.“It is because we are so relatable,” said Dan Allen, who edits the club videos.

“A First Eleven game at Sanderstead will be still be watched at the ground by the proverbial one man and his dog, yet the filmed highlights of the same match on YouTube will be seen by more people than can fit into The Oval.”

Sanderstead is one of the village clubs that are part of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s play-cricket.com initiative, which is an online venture designed to help village teams grow and make money through sponsorship.

This venture has a strong focus on club badges, heritage grounds and colours with a website section dedicated to “get the atmosphere building with insights for next week’s match”.

“Our Inspiring Generations strategy aims to grow the game by investing money back into the grassroots level and the enormous success of village cricket online goes to show that the appetite is there for more,” an ECB spokesman said.

For a worldwide audience, English village cricket coverage is part sports highlights and part travel show with England’s picturesque village greens an ideal online stage.

This fact is not lost on village cricket film makers and photographers who have moved their equipment out of village grandstands to ensure the quaint heritage buildings beside England’s village grounds are pictured in all aspects of coverage.

With an international audience hungry to learn more about the villages themselves as well as the club history and club heraldry, English village cricket is onto a winner.

Another reason for this success is that - unlike test match cricket - village cricket pits cricketers of widely different skills against each other, with a good bowler likely to decimate a team of bad batsman and a good batsman like to hit a mediocre bowler for six on every ball.

It is exciting (if not eccentric) cricket and is the type of thing the Poms are traditionally very good at.

It is just the type of cricket that one-day internationals were designed to promote.

And it is also a money spinner because England’s worldwide village cricket audience is expected to see sponsorship diversify.

New Morrison Bay basketball court passes ground test JUNIOR basketball players have praised the playing surface of the new basketball court at Morrison Bay Park.

The court has just been completed by the City of Ryde and is located next to Morrison Road, in front of the new cricket nets.

Basketball players Gregory Chow, Greg Kollias, Ash Tay and James Fisher were at the court on Wednesday alongside The Weekly Times and Clr Roy Maggio to give the playing surface their tick of approval.

“For an outdoor court, the playing surface is great and the line markings are correct, so it meets competition standards,” Greg Kollias said.

Ash Tay from the Hornsby Spiders Club said she plans to train on the court twice a week because of the sound playing surface as well as the amenities which will include a bubbler.

“The shade around the court makes all the difference and we have been waiting ages for the bubbler, which will be fantastic,” she said.

“We’ve not had enough investment in basketball in the past and we need more girl players, so this new court is very important.”

The junior players said the location at Morrison Bay Park will be critical to the success of the new court because the nearest court is in Meadowbank.

“There is plenty of parking nearby and that’s good for mums and dads with younger children who

want to bring a basketball down here,” they said..

The new court was funded by a grant from Ryde MP Victor Dominello and was welcomed by Clr Maggio.

“I’ve been advocating for this funding of around $5,000 as well as for funding for all the new upgrades at this picturesque park which now has new lighting,” he said.

“There are more upgrades planned, there is seating for spectators, a bubbler is being completed shortly alongside the wonderful inclusion for the BBQ facility, pathway lighting, an extra cricket net and outside gym equipment.

“The basketball court has been needed for some time now because we want to be inclusive and cater for all outdoor sports.

“Thanks to the grant money, families are already enjoying the new upgrades in this wonderful park, right on our foreshore.

A three on three basketball competition – hosted by the Ryde Bulls, has been scheduled for Morrison Bay Park on Saturday, February 22 between 2pm and 5pm.

An official opening ceremony to celebrate the completion of the basketball court project will be held at 2.00pm Cricket NSW will also host activities on the day.
