The Joubert Singers will be joined by talented young soloists Laura Wachsmann (soprano), Geoffrey Carman (bass) and Gareth Baard (organ) - all three of whom performed at the 2018 Joubert Singers’ Silver Anniversary Christmas Concert.

They also welcome new soloists Michael Burden (alto) and Alexander Caldwell (tenor) while highly respected pianist and choral director Erzsi Marosszeky will conduct this concert.

Featured is the marvellous Magnificat by Pergolesi (Durante) while the choir and soloists will also sing Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s charming Messe de Minuit, a joyous Baroque cantata based on beautiful French folk carols, along with short works by Bruckner and Mozart. As usual, the concert will include some favourite Christmas carols to be sung with the audience.

Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale and Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou were called upon to resign at last night’s fiery extraordinary general meeting.

Meeting was called by Liberal Councillors Trenton Brown and Jordan Lane who moved that the City of Ryde refer the allegations in the Australian Financial Review of October 30 to the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) for their full investigation and advice and the Mayor and Deputy Mayor stand down from their positions in the interim pending this investigation.

They added that the Council co-operate fully with the ICAC and offer all information and assistance possible about the Yuhu Group Development Application for the Eastwood Shopping Centre.

Also that the City of Ryde write to the Northern Sydney Planning Panel and attempt to have the approval of the Eastwood Shopping Centre overturned and that its development be held in abeyance pending an investigation by the NSW ICAC. In addition hat the City of Ryde write to State and Federal Governments and seek the assets of the Yuhu Group at the Eastwood Shopping Centre be frozen until such time as the bona fide’s of the Development Application process can be ascertained and consent given for this process and approval by the relevant authorities.

He further stressed that the recommendations made by the City of Ryde to the planning panel in relation to the Eastwood development were staff recommendations - not councillor recommendations - and the panel has powers to accept or reject them.

“What is behind this motion is that the Liberals lost the last council election and these two councillors cannot handle it and have been calling on me to resign since day one,” he said.

Letters to the Editor Equitable sharing water resources Dear Sir, The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA) seem incapable of making an informed contribution about the crisis that faces our entire community - the health of our precious Murray-Darling river system. (TWT 5.11.19) A functioning, flowing river is not “unnecessary”. It is a necessity so that fishers, swimmers, tourists, and all downstream users have access to clean water, salinity is flushed to the ocean and algal blooms are prevented.

The Natural Resource Commission reviews the NSW’s water sharing plans. It found that the irrigation industry has been well supported by politicians such as John Barilaro: the NSW government has allowed a handful of large agribusinesses to have access to excessive amounts of water and encouraged the proliferation of floodplain dams.

This monopoly has had downstream consequences. Tragically, TWT readers have witnessed mass fish kills, communities and enterprises becoming financially unviable, the younger generation from the land seeing no future for their region and First Nations deprived of cultural water.

The NSW government has put large corporate enterprises ahead of the needs of a healthy river system and the benefits this provides for communities, graziers, fishers, swimmers, tourists,

redgums etc.

Giving back water to the ATA’s “struggling farmers” may sound great but ignores the reality that NSW’s water sharing plans favour irrigation agribusinesses’ monopoly of basin water and diminish the resilience of all basin communities.

We need collaboration and commitment over water resources - especially given the longer term predictions about our climate. We need to share this limited precious resource equitably and sustainably across the basin.

North Ryde Companion Animals Resources must be Act alterations controlled fairly Dear Sir, I was surprised to read that the City of Ryde has resolved to support a community petition to amend Section 16(2) of the Companion Animals Act 1998 by inserting the words “It is not an offence under this section if the incident occurred: (f) where a dog is behind a physical barrier such as a fence or enclosure and “rushes at or harasses a person or animal”.

The majority of owners manage the behaviour of their dogs as required by the Act, however there are owners who do not treat their dogs as companions, but merely as watch dogs.

Often these dogs are left alone all day in their front gardens, and respond to any movement in the street by barking – and rushing at their fence, barking and harassing pedestrians,

Dear Sir, Emilie Dye of the socalled Australian Taxpayers’ Association writes so many non-sequiturs to TWT on November 9, 2019, I have to respond.

First “When government gets in the business of business, people suffer”.

This is a ridiculous absolute. It depends on the issue and HOW government handles it.

Undoubtedly, the government’s handling of water resources has been incompetent, exacerbated by the drought. But this is no justification for ATA’s negligent position.

ATA argues that government should get out of everything and leave it to the market. But water is a critical and scarce shared resource.

The sharing of water in a fair manner, must be respected, but when not respected, it must be enforced – this is the role of government and the law.

What ATA advocates is that the selfish and greedy few should dictate to and deprive others of access to this critical resource – oh, but isn’t that the situation we have? Advocating this view when there is government incompetence over the worst drought ever is disgraceful.

The Murray-Darling needs very careful management and sharing of resources for all, not the abandonment to the selfinterested few as ATA would advocate.

Live by the sword, die by the sword Dear Sir, An old Biblical proverb once said “those who live by the sword, die by the sword”, well I’m suggesting that “those who live by identity politics, die by identity politics”.

The turmoil currently facing Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale gives no better evidence for this.

Recently, Jerome Laxale has had his most ardent supporters in Labor Councillor Peter Kim and former Labor party staffer and current Deputy Mayor Simon Zhou object, boycott Council meetings (alongside other Councillors and residents) and withdraw support for the Mayor, in opposition to his arrogance, his policies and his abhorrent identity politics.

Additionally, he is allegedly currently facing ICAC investigations for illegally using the data of potentially 50,000 local residents for his own political benefit.

But more importantly, it’s great to see courage and independent thinking from some of our Ryde Councillors.

The breaking of party lines

In standing up against the Mayor and current Labor party policy, Clr Peter Kim has shown real conviction, but in doing so he’s demonstrated that Jerome Laxale’s arrogance, ideological policies and identity politics are not on.

In 2016 the parish sold St Johns Church forcing Hunters Hill Theatre to find a new home.

With the support of the Hunters Hill Council, the Theatre relocated to the Hunters Hill Town Hall for their 2017 and 2018 seasons.

The group and its productions are staffed entirely by members and volunteers, led by the committee and myself and is proud to support the Marist Sisters’ Colleges theatre studies program

Stout hearted Jeni is Doing It For Our Farmers

BACK in August local resident and Senior Volunteer of the Year Jeni Zuber organised a convoy of four cars and two trailers filled with items for our farmers.

The enormous help of family and community meant the provision of things that they desperately needed such as water, hand wash, wipes, mouth wash as the lack of water around, non perishable goods, toiletries, sanitary items, coffee, tea etc she was also able to stop in towns along the way with goods and money donations and gave Sue-Ellen Wilkin (the founder of Doing It For Our Farmers) vouchers to be given to the farmers.

Jeni has decided to do another drive in November and was wondering if the community can assist again.

Epping great grand mother celebrates 105th birthday on Remembrance Day

EPPING’S Lorraine Bent celebrated her 105th birthday last Monday.

A great grandmother, accomplished artist and craft maker, Lorraine was born in Burwood on the 11th hour of the eleventh month in 1914 and moved to Burwood when she was four years old.

Her story encapsulates the great events of more than a century of Australian life and her connection with The Great War began when she

was born and given the middle name ‘Lorraine’ after the French province of Lorraine where a bitter but patriotic territorial dispute with Imperial Germany was one of the causes of the catastrophic European conflict.

“My first name is actually Sydney and I was named after the Australian warship HMAS Sydney which was famous

for the great sea battle with the German ship The Emden,” she said.

Lorraine’s mother died when she was eight years old and she was raised by her father, one of Australia’s first photographers who captured this image of her (pictured) in Edwardian dress with toys of the era.

“He was a wonderful, wonderful man who

I adored so very, very much,” she said.

“But he looks so sad in this photograph .. I think, because of mum.”

Her school days were at Epping Public School and she went on to work as an usherette at the Epping Theatre and in the fashion department of David Jones store in Market Street.

“I met my (late) husband Reg at the fashion department of David Jones, he was a cutter and David Jones had quite a reputation for quality and craftsmanship,” she said.

“We were married at St Alban’s Anglican Church in Epping in 1943.”

She recalls another staff member – also named Reg – from the Curtain Department who persistently sought the attention of a colleague of hers, only to have his advances rejected.

“His name was Reg Grundy and he kept on asking her out all the time, but that was before he went on to make quite a name for himself.”

Lorraine was still at David Jones the day World War Two ended.

“I remember that day very well because we were so happy we all tore up pieces of paper and threw them out of

Her husband served in the army on local defensive duty and she recalls the night the Japanese attacked Sydney Harbour on May 31, 1942.

“Everybody was saying something terrible must have happened because all the trains and buses in the city were cancelled or delayed,” she said.

Across a century of Australian life, this Epping great grandmother said the people she most admired are the Australian doctors who performed the first heart

transplants.

Lorraine has lived in her Brigg Street cottage for more than 70 years where her landscape paintings hang among photographs that date back to the 1920’s.

She told The Weekly Times her happiest moments are when her children, grand children and 21 great grand children come to visit her.

“I love life and enjoy everything about life and I still go for walks and enjoy my craft work,” she said.

The Weekly Times asked her if there was a secret to living to be 105

years of age.

“No, I don’t have any secrets although I never drank and never smoked and I’ve always done a lot of walking,” she said.

“I remember a doctor once recommended that I smoke one cigarette every afternoon but as soon as I tried one, I thought yuk .. this tastes foul and I never touched another cigarette again.”

Lorraine Bent’s friends congratulate her on her 105th birthday and it was a close friend who let The Weekly Times know about her special day.

PUTNEY VILLAGE STREET FEST

Putney festival will pack out the shopping village

PUTNEY’s shopping village street fest was launched by the local business community on Friday.

More than ten thousand visitors are expected to come to the fest, which will be held in the village on Sunday November 24 from 11am to 4pm where police will close off local roads from 5am.

The fest is the initiative of Clr Roy Maggio in partnership with The Weekly Times and local shop owners and aims to promote Putney as a family venue that offers a vibrant range of restaurants and speciality shops.

“It is going to be one hell of a street party! ” Clr Maggio said.

“There is a lot of enthusiasm for this festival and it is great to see Putney’s local businesses supporting each other and the Putney Street Committee and our media partner, The Weekly Times ” The Master of Ceremonies at the fest will be A J Jarvis, the Breakfast Show host from Radio 2RRR. “We are expecting thousands of visitors .. around ten thousand throughout the day .. so this is going to be huge,” he said.

“There will be rides for kids, fantastic food, a petting zoo, face painting and live music from start to finish and I hope to live broadcast the festival.”

He said he would love to see every local shop packed with partygoers and called on sports personalities and other celebrities to come to Putney

and meet the community.

“I especially want to see all the celebrities who live locally and when the festival is finished at 4pm I will invite everyone up to the Putney Bowling Club to keep the celebration going.

Parramatta residents invited to provide feedback on masterplan

CITY of Parramatta Council is inviting all local residents and businesses to have their say on upgrades to recreational and community spaces in North Granville.

The draft North Granville Community Facilities Masterplan is now on public exhibition and provides a long-term plan for developing social infrastructure, including open spaces and plazas, cycle paths, playing fields and other amenities.

“The purpose of this masterplan is to ensure the community facilities and spaces in North Granville meet the needs and expectations of both current and future residents of the area,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

MORE 40 kilometre an hour street zones will be rolled out across Parramatta.

The new street zones have been declared by the City of Parramatta and Transport for NSW on roads that have lots of pedestrians on and around them.

The council hopes the lower travel speeds will improve motorists ability to stop quickly and react to the unexpected.

It responds to state government research that shows that a vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at 40km/h.

“These new speed limits create a safer road environment for everyone, particularly vulnerable groups such as older road users and children,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said.

The 40km/h speed limits will be signposted in locals streets in the Parramatta CBD area bounded

by O’Connell Street to the West, Wilde Avenue and Harris Street to the East, Victoria Road and the Parramatta River to the North, and the Great Western Highway, Parkes Street to the South.

Parramatta North includes local streets bounded by O’Connell Street to the West, Church Street to the East, Albert Street to the North and Victoria Road to the South.

Westmead incudes streets bounded by Hawkesbury Road to the West, Parramatta Park to the East, Hainsworth Street to the North and the railway line to the South.

Harris Park is bounded by the railway line to the West, Harris Street to the East, Parkes Street to the North and Les Burnett Lane to the South.

The 40km/h speed limit is enforceable and normal enforcement procedures will apply.

Jongno-gu friendship agreement strengthens Ryde’s ties with Korea THE CITY of Ryde signed a friendship agreement with the City of Jongno-gu from the Republic of Korea last week.

It was the first friendship agreement the City of Ryde has signed with a Korean city and the formal signing ceremony was made at the Council’s offices in North Ryde on Wednesday night.

It was jointly signed

by City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jerome Laxale and Jongno-gu City Mayor Kim YoungJong and will lead to economic and educational development through shared resources and information exchanges.

“The friendship agreement we have signed will allow both

cities to forge closer ties and grow together,” Mayor Laxale told The Weekly Times He said the City of Ryde shared a number of similarities with the City of Jongno-gu and hopes the agreement will further economic investment and high tech job creation.

“Just like the City of Ryde and Macquarie Park, the city of Jongno-gu is the tech, innovation and research hub of the Korean capital Seoul.”

The agreement follows months of diplomatic negotiations

driven by the City of Ryde’s Korean speaking councillor Dr Peter Kim who described the agreement as historic and momentous.

“It was pleasure to host representatives from the City of Jongno-gu and show them snapshot of what the City of Ryde has to offer,” Dr Kim said.

“The agreement signed will have a range of benefits for both cities as it will allow each of us to develop a greater understanding of one another, including characteristics, cultures, perspectives

and priorities.”

It is also coup for the City of Ryde which competes with other areas of Sydney – especially Campsie – to position itself as the cultural and business heart of the local Korean speaking community.

This was evident in a tour of Macquarie Park’s business district by visiting representatives from the City of Jongno-gu as well as a visit to Riding for Disabled Australia facilities in Marsfield and a tour of historic Brush Farm House.

The disease is a neurodegenerative condition of the central nervous system.

It commonly presents as a change in motor function, including muscle stiffness, tremors, and changes in posture, but it can also affect other functions like speech, sleep, sense of smell and mood.

Some people with Parkinson’s are unsure if they’re experiencing normal agerelated memory changes or the beginning of something more sinister.

Changes in a person’s ability to make decisions; problem solve; manage finances; remember things; and maintain attention; as well as changes in mood or personality, can all be signs of dementia.

“The best way to monitor these risks is to have an initial assessment so that over time any change or risk can be actively managed. Early intervention is always the best approach,” A/Prof Kathryn Goozee CEO KaRa Institute of Neurological Diseases (KaRa MINDS).

KaRa MINDS helps people navigate this process, providing appointments to help test and monitor cognitive function and change over time. They also run clinical trials for the treatment of neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s disease with dementia.

“It is only through research that we will be able to find a cure for this devastating disease, and also prevent or lower the risk of dementia. We are currently running clinical trials for people with Parkinson’s disease who have memory concerns” says A/Prof Goozee.

A study, supported by the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, is currently underway at KaRa MINDS

and internationally. It is investigating the influence of ANAVEX2-73, a promising approach targeting memory changes in both Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Fear and misinformation can rob people of the opportunity to contribute proactively to science and delays the likelihood of finding a cure.

I encourage anyone with Parkinson’s disease or memory changes to contact us, and hear about what is available with our clinical trials,” says A/ Prof Goozee.

Hunters Hill Council’s finances are revealed in new government audit

ONE MILLION dollars is the estimated operating surplus of Hunters Hill Council, a state audit has found.

Cathy Wu from the NSW Audit Office revealed the figure during Monday night’s council meeting where she also revealed the council had met or exceeded five out of six government benchmark standards.

Although the council did not meet an operational performance benchmark the overall operational performance of Hunters Hill is expected to be improved by a recent shared services agreement with neighbouring Lane Cove Council.

The council’s finances are also expected to show an improvement as it withdraws from a shared library deal with the City of Ryde, which had drained the council coffers of hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

“On the positive side there was a low level of reliance on grants,” Ms Wu said.

of urgency, Hunters Hill councillors resolved on Monday night.

Councillors unanimously passed a resolution put by Clr Jim Sanderson and Clr Elizabeth Krassoi to seek a commitment from Transport for NSW to “urgently resolve outstanding safety issues at the overpass” for pedestrians moving between the Hunters Hill Village as well as between homes and schools to the east of Burns Bay Road.

The successful motion proposed a review into the consolidation of the two western most Burns Bay Road northbound on-ramps to tighten the left turn from Gladesville Road into Burns Bay Road to slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

It was also resolved that Transport for NSW consider “a signalised pedestrian crossing” for northbound on-ramp to Burns Bay Road.

Councillor Sanderson said some vehicles travel through the precinct at up to 80km per hour and the motion targets this problem.

“Let’s slow these vehicles down, it is very important we pursue this,” he said.

funding for these speed calming initiatives. **** FIRE DAMAGED Richmond Valley Council is expected to receive support from Hunters Hill Council which resolved to establish a rural wishing tree.

Hunters Hill will enter into talks with Richmond Valley Council to find ways the wishing tree can help these country cousins whose homes have been devastated in recent weeks.

“This is for the kids who will not have Christmas presents and for the parents who are struggling to feed their families,” Clr Zac Miles said.

A rural wishing tree will be erected at the Town Hall and other local venues where Hunters Hill families can donate presents and food hampers.

Gifts can also be made to farmers in drought stricken areas and Hunters Hill will seek out appropriate charity partners. Here are reasons why you should seek medical attention for foot issues.

1. If you feel you are moving less due to pain or discomfort. There may be changes to your gait that are causing you

to move differently.

Or sometimes a pain develops suddenly with no apparent cause. Your podiatrist can do a full biomechanical assessment and develop a treatment plan that can help you get moving again free from pain.

2. If there are changes to the skin in your lower limbs if your feet swell or

the skin cracks or bleeds or becomes very hard, you should seek medical advice.

3. If you feel like your walk changes, or you notice that your shoes are wearing down unevenly, see your podiatrist as this can have a huge effect on your overall posture.

4. If you have fallen

pregnant or had a baby, the changes in weight and the impact pregnancy has on the ligaments can cause significant changes to pressures in the feet.

It is important to have an assessment to ensure that any changes don’t cause long term follow on affects to the ankles, knees and hips.

5. If you feel like you have lost some of the sensation in your feet.

A survey conducted by the Australian Podiatry Association in 2018 showed that most people tend to ignore decreased sensation and lack of movement compared with increased pain, however it is just as important.

If you notice this, seek medical attention.

6. If you need to change your regular footwear.

MARSDEN HIGH School in West Ryde is celebrating 60 years of quality public education in 2019.

The school opened in 1959, with 352 students in 10 classes.

It was revolutionary for the time as it was a coeducational high school in a time when most secondary schools were single sex.

The original school motto, ‘We learn to serve’, was based on the thoughts of ancient Greek philosophers that happiness comes from serving others.

In 1996 it was changed to ‘Learning for life’ to reflect a more contemporary approach, that learning is a lifelong experience.

One of the most wellknown teachers from Marsden’s early days was Mr Richard Gill AOM, a renowned Australian conductor and

music educator, who taught at Marsden in the 1960s.

Residents’ Silent Auction Fundraiser a huge success

TWILIGHT Aged Care’s own residents were behind the success of this year’s 2nd Annual Art Exhibition and Cocktail Party.

The exhibition displayed a large collection of works include oil paintings and smaller watercolours that were auctioned off silently during the night.

Raffle prizes were donated by Gregory and Carr and all of the proceeds of the evening went to support creative programs held for those living in the residential homes.

The residents hosted and organised the event, held at Twilight’s boutique facility at Glades Bay Gardens on Punt Road Gladesville and the exhibition

itself solely featured art from residents across the Twilight community, including Hunters Hill and Horton House.

Liz Matthews, a resident at Glades Bay Gardens and one of the Art Committee members, stated that she “always looked forward to it every morning”.

The art therapy provides a place of self expression for the residents as well as challenge them cognitively and technically.

Twilight’s Annual Art Exhibition was joined by members of the lo-

cal community including volunteers from local schools and students from the University of NSW who catered the evening.

Julianne Walker, Twilight’s volunteer and project coordinator, stated that having the artwork comes from across the Twilight homes provided a “sense of community” and brought the larger Twilight family together.

Select artworks from the exhibition are now proudly decorating the homes in a permanent in-house collection.

Beecroft House provided to Hornsby Kuring-gai Women’s Shelter

A LOCAL aged care facility is being temporarily repurposed as a homeless shelter in an initiative to support displaced women over 55.

Jamieson House Twilight (now referred to as Beecroft House) during the spring.

The project will provide financial and residential support for the homeless and give 20 women housing accommodation for the next two years.

The program aims to enhance lives through these services and give these women independence through housing pathways.

The Beecroft House: Housing Partnership Project is the collaboration of the Hornsby Council and over six organisations in North Sydney including the Women’s Shelter, Twilight Aged Care and Link Housing.

Majority of these

companies are offering services to the Women’s Shelter project free of charge, including the lease for the building itself.

The building is an aged care home known as Jamieson House.

It was provided by Twilight Aged Care, who contacted the Hornsby Kuringgai Women’s Shelter and offered a two year rent-free access while they redesign their new facility.

This spirit of charity is shared by organisations like The National Projects and Maintenance group, who are providing their services and 40

workers for free to renovate Beecroft House. The Generous and the Grateful have also donated the furniture for the building.

Maraget Maljkovic, Chief Operating Officer at Link Housing, spoke about the great need for affordable housing at the Beecroft House community information afternoon.

She said the housing project is especially important for older women in the Sydney area where living prices are too high for some.

Maljkovic said that Beecroft House will provide opportunities for

the women to get back on their feet in times of financial or personal crisis.

The project have already received support from the community, and it aims to work closely with the public.

The Women’s Community Shelter is setting up a Facebook page to allow those living in Kuring-gai to observe the construction progress.

The page will later offer opportunities for members of the community to help out and support the home with activities such as gardening, painting and cleaning.

AUSTRALIA’S 28th Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his family were honoured by the Liberal Party at one of its biggest ever gatherings.

More than 1,100 guests at-tended the $175-plus per head event - with several hundred more on the waiting list - at Miramare Gardens in Terrey Hills, just outside Mr Abbott’s former electorate of Warringah.

The celebration last week, missed by Mr Abbott’s wife Margie who was in hospital recovering from a lumpectomy, was attended by a ‘Who’s Who’ of the Liberal Party with celebrity MC, radio personality Alan Jones.

The guest of honour’s sister, City of Sydney councillor Christine Forster, was among members of the Abbott family in attendance, praising her brother as “an amazing asset to our country” despite their well-publicised policy differences.

NSW Liberal Party president Philip Ruddock said members’ interest in the sold-out event was unprecedented.

“We’ve had an enormous number of people who wanted to be there but couldn’t - people who recognise (Mr Abbott’s) very significant and outstanding contribution to Australia,” he said.

“People don’t always agree on every issue, but they recognise that his service has been unique and extraordinarily special.”

Mr Ruddock bestowed Mr Abbott with a lifetime service award, the highest award that can be given to a member of the NSW Liberal Party.

Big names on the guest list were NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, federal cabinet ministers Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and Energy Minister Angus Taylor, Mr

Abbott’s former chief-of-staff Peta Credlin and Liberal vicepresident Teena McQueen.

Ms Credlin had some poignant reflections on the Mr Abbott, someone she knows better than most, in a newspaper column last weekend.

“Abbott was a rare politician of conviction. You might not always have agreed with him, but he said what he believed and did what he said,” she wrote.

“How many MPs have been prepared, as Abbott was, to volunteer in the local fire brigade and surf club; and to spend serious time in remote Australia rather than just pontificate, on reconciliation?

“And when it comes to character, how many MPs today, speak on the record, as Abbott did, rather than leak and brief anonymously?

“Having now worked in poli-tics and the media, I make two observations. If politicians spent as much time building up our country as they spend trying to tear each other down - via anonymous sources, or off the record - Australia, would be far better for it.”

Ms Credlin also noted that if today’s journalists “spent the time their predecessors once did, in drilling into the detail of policy and keeping politicians on their toes rather than focused on internal gossip, we would have better outcomes for real people”.

The lineup at the head table with Mr Abbott included , Mr Morrison and Mr Howard were Liberal Kevin Andrews, Liberal senator Eric Abetz and former

deputy prime minister Warren Truss.

Among the high-profile nonpoliticians was respected former Crown Prosecutor turned defence barrister, Margaret Cunneen, best-known recently for clipping the wings of the reckless ICAC over its abuse of power.

“It was magnificent to witness again Mr Abbott’s intellect, erudition and commitment to service,” Ms Cunneen told The Weekly Times.

“His enormous contribution in wresting so many seats from Labor, stopping the boats, opening up Western Sydney with an airport and ending the insane carbon and mining taxes, will never be forgotten.”

Numerous local business figures were also at the event, including former Woolies boss Roger Corbett, who is president of the Liberal electorate conference in Warringah; former Sydney Airport chairman Max Moore-Wilton, UNICEF boss and former NRMA head Tony Stuart and philanthropist couple Kay van Norton Poche and husband Greg, who founded Star Track Express.

During the event, Mr Abbott said Mr Morrison had saved the federal government from being judged “an embarrassing failure” with his “near miraculous” win in May. “Had we lost this election, this government would have been judged an embarrassing failure,” Mr Abbott said.

“So I might have started it - but frankly Scott, you have saved it.

“And for that, I do not normally bracket myself with Malcolm Turnbull, but Malcolm Turnbull and I both ower you a tremendous debt.”

Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, stole the show when he took to the stage, introduced by MC Alan Jones, with the words: "He didn't get his spine at Kmart."

“Whenever you caught up with Tony as we all traversed around the country it was always at a steak restaurant,” Mr Dutton said.

“Tony loves his steak - and the leftover portion of your steak as well, even if it’s only the rib bone off the rib eye with a skerrick of meat left on, he was still very happy to oblige.”

Mr Abbott entered Parliament in 1994 at a byelection and held the seat of Warringah for 25 years.

During that time he served as a minister in the Howard government, including in the health portfolio, and then led the Liberal Party into government in 2013 with a decisive victory over Kevin Rudd’s Labor.

But he was deposed when Mr Turnbull challenged him for the top job in 2015.

Every member of the NSW Liberal Party was invited to last week’s event, including Mr Turnbull, although it’s understood the former member for Wentworth was not called upon to speak.

Meadowbank Public School Year 6 Choir sang beautifully In Flanders Fields by Lt Col John McCrae (1915) followed by laying of wreaths on the cenotaph.

Phillip Ward of East Ryde Scouts played the Last Post and The Rouse with The Ode recited by Epping Boys High School Head Prefect James Cutrone.

Finally The Lord’s Prayer was lead by Holy Cross College 2020 School Captain George Kriezis followed by the National Anthem sung

by Meadowbank Public School Choir.

STUDENTS from Hunters Hill High School received Returned and Services League Certificates Of Appreciation to commemorate the Centenary of The First Remembrance Day during a ceremony at the local RSL sub branch hall on Monday.

The certificates commemorate the first Remembrance Day service in London on November 11, 1919 attended by King George V. Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett and RSL representatives said they hope the students will treasure the certificates and be proud of the Australians who gave their lives in The Great War or returned home wounded.

“This is an historic day in the history of Hunters Hill and in the history of Australia,” Mayor Bennett said.

Students read poems to commemorate the servicemen and women who served in The Great War and student Hugo Brasher paid tribute to his great, great grandfather Walter Samuel Thompson who was shot in the arm during conflict.

Reverend Michael Armstrong from All Saints Anglican Church told the ceremony he was sceptical about how much Remembrance Day meant to young people until he heard the students’ poems.

“These children really do know what Remembrance Day really means,” he said.

Momentary Heritage Study court setback for City of Ryde 22 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 13 November, 2019

A COURT has found the City of Ryde invalidly issued an Interim Heritage Order (IHO) on properties in Denistone.

On Friday, the NSW Land and Environment Court Justice Anne Duggan ruled the IHO issued by the City of Ryde in relation to the two adjoining parcels at 68-70 Chatham Road, was made invalidly and in breach of an April 2013 Ministerial Authority.

The case followed a development application by the sites’ owner Syncept Chatham Pty Ltd to demolish dwellings and redevelop the adjoining blocks.

During consideration of the DA the Council resolved to place an IHO on the Land through a Mayoral Minute by Mayor Jerome Laxale at a meeting of Ryde Council on 26 January this year.

Council contended the Mayoral Minute was a summary of reports on file from Council Heritage Advisor, Michael Edwards and consultants GML Heritage, but did not provide those reports in the council papers when the matter was considered.

‘Background’ material in documents presented to councillors was also found

by Justice Duggan to contain information not supported in either report and omissions, including Mr Edwards opinion that “demolition can be supported subject to conditions.”

“I find that the IHO was not validly made, in that the Council failed to consider a preliminary heritage assessment of the item as required by paragraph 1(a) of the Minister’s authority granted to the Council pursuant to s 25(1) of the Heritage Act 1977,” Justice Duggan wrote in her judgement.

She went on to note her findings made did not preclude the protection (if appropriate) of the item the subject of these proceedings.

“The Heritage Act permits the Council to make an IHO (now -

there having not been one already validly made) if it does so in conformity with the Authority,” she said.

Justice Duggan also noted the Minister could make an IHO at any time under s24 of the Heritage Act and where an item was not the subject of an IHO, the Minister or the Chairperson of the Heritage Council could make an order under s136 of the Act. She partially ordered costs against City of Ryde, which has renewed the IHO on the properties, also taking effect last Friday.

“This is a classic case where a minority of ideological proheritage bullies, purely motivated by politics have attempted to take away the property rights of our peaceful and law abiding residents,” Clr Kim told The Weekly Times.

“They have made a botched decision to place interim heritage order in 69 Chatham road without considering all the relevant facts and following the law.”

As reported in The Weekly Times last week, Clr Kim has broken ranks with the dominant Labor/ Greens bloc on council and joined independent Councillor Roy Maggio and Liberal councillors to oppose the controversial forced heritage listing of local properties.

“These people think they are above the law and justly, the court struck them down,” he said, adding that he hoped all Ryde residents could see “what a joke this Heritage Study is”.

Clr Maggio was concerned that council was wasting ratepayers money and not being transparent.

“Questions are not answered and there is a lack of openness and transparency by council officers,” he said.

“For two years it’s

been a constant battle to get the truth out of a secret ‘Underbelly’ council and the residents of ryde deserve better.

“We demand to know where our rates are being spent and legal fees have increased immensely under a Labor/Greens council.”

Council did not respond to The Weekly Times’ request for comment but published a comprehensive statement on its website on Tuesday, in which it made no mention of the court proceedings.

“Given that the properties may have local heritage significance and are under imminent threat of harm through demolition, it was prudent that Council resolved to follow the necessary process to impose Interim Heritage Orders over the properties,” the statement said.

“Council will commission a qualified heritage specialist to undertake an independent assessment to establish the cultural heritage significance of 68 and 70 Chatham Road, Denistone.

“If the assessment confirms that the properties have local heritage significance, Council will then commence the preparation of a Planning Proposal to include 68 and 70 Chatham Road, Denistone, within Schedule 5 – Environmental Heritage of the Ryde Local Environmental Plan 2014.”

The statement said the planning Proposal would be prepared under the provisions of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and would include community consultation.

“At that stage, members of the community will have opportunity to review and comment on the Planning Proposal and the proposed heritage listing,” City of Ryde said.

OLQP Creative Doves use their sewing skills for a worthy cause

FIVE Year 6 pupils from Our Lady Queen of Peace School at Gladesville have carried on a proud tradition to help people in need.

Students Elyse Smith, Sophie Haddad, Isabella Calleja, Holly Mizens and Lara Wisemantel are part of the “Creative Doves” who are following tradition where they learn sewing skills and then make useful, practical items which are given to a worthwhile charity.

The girls get together once each week at school and sacrifice their lunchbreak to do their sewing.

They are coordinated by Julie Simon, one of the school’s Learning Support Officers and Mrs Sharon Smith who is one of the girls’ mothers.

For their latest project - on behalf of Aussie Hero Quilts - the girls provided individual laundry bags with care packs for Australian troops serving overseas.

Council supports police march to prevent violence on women

THE CITY of Ryde is encouraging local residents, businesses and workers to take part in the upcoming No Excuse For Abuse March on Friday November 22.

The march is an initiative of Ryde LAC Police Domestic Violence officer Sergeant Jerrod Luck to help raise awareness of the role men can play in preventing violence against women.

Councillor Penny Pedersen worked with Sgt Luck to organise the march and said she hoped OH&S officers at businesses in Macquarie Park will encourage staff to join the march.

It will start outside Macquarie University School of Engineering at 11am and end at Elouera Reserve.

Speakers include Ryde Police Area Command Superintendent David Waddell and domestic violence prevention advocate Rebecca Sciroli.

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale said the council is proud to support this police initiative.

“We need to continue to shine a spotlight on domestic violence and the devastating impact it has on victims, their loved ones and the community,” she said.

“I hope to see as many local residents and businesses as possible at this event to say as a community that Ryde will not tolerate violence and abuse.”

Councillor Pedersen also encouraged schools to promote the message of the march.

$4100 Coles grant boost for Ryde Little Athletics

RYDE Little Athletics Centre has received a $4100 grant from Coles to purchase brand new sports gear thanks to funds raised through the sale of Coles’ Community Chiller Bags.

EXPERIENCED trio of Robbie Rose, Richard Schilling and Kurt Stuart (pictured) took out the 2019 Hunters Hill Mens Bowling Club Triples Championship with a 29-18 victory over runners up Ross Bauer, Brendon Love and Mike Burton. The final score-line wasn’t a proper reflection of the titanic tussle on the green in which the lead changed on numerous occasions before Robbie’s team ultimately charged strongly across the finish line.

The Little Athletics Centre in Ryde is one of more than 200 centres across Australia to receive funding from Coles to replace or expand its sports equipment.

Funds for the grants are raised through the sale of specially-marked chiller bags designed by eightyear-old Lachie Macdonald from Victoria and 11 yearold Charlie De Bruyn from Western Australia.

For every bag sold, 25 cents is directed to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants.

said Coles was delighted to provide grants to help the Little Athletics centres in locations such as Ryde.

“Thanks to our customers who have bought our range of chiller bags at Coles stores, we have been able to provide over $800,000 in grants for Little Athletics centres around Australia to help them purchase equipment to support activities such as high jump, discus, hurdles and the various running events.

“The Ryde Little Athletics Centre told us they would like to receive a grant for hurdles and we were delighted

to help because we know these are an essential part of Little Athletics to support young budding athletes,” she said.

Ryde Little Athletics’ Treasurer Melissa Chandler said the grant would make a big difference to the centre, which needed new equipment to continually provide a high quality and safe weekly experience for its young athletes.

“The Coles grant will have a huge impact on our centre,” said Melissa.

“We have a lot of old hurdles that are literally falling apart and this grant will allow us to replace them in

time for next season,” she revealed.

“We also have local schools using our equipment for school carnivals so the new hurdles from Coles will benefit not only Ryde’s little athletes but the primary schoolkids in the area as well,” Melissa added.

In addition to the chiller bags, Coles sells Community Bags which help to raise funds for SecondBite, Guide Dogs Australia and Clean Up Australia.

All Community Bags were designed by school children as part of a bag design competition.

Top gloveman McClintock a trump card for Tigers

SYDNEY Cricket Club’s unheralded wicket keeper batsman Beau McClintock (pictured) continues to live up to his Mr Reliable tag in the NSW Premier Cricket first grade competition.

The 25 year old Canberra native has proved a revelation for the Tigers behind the stumps and with the bat since linking with the club five summers ago and shapes as a trump card in their 2019-20 premiership campaign.

Last Saturday he peeled off an unbeaten 58 off 1224 balls to steer the Tigers to an emphatic four wicket victory over Western Suburbs in a local derby clash at Drummoyne Oval.

McClintock cracked five boundaries and a six during his stylish knock as Sydney (6-241) eclipsed the Magpies first day tally of 183 to return to the winners list.

The capable keeperbatsman combined with Middlesex recruit Nick Gubbins, who carved out an impressive 54 off 104 balls, in a fourth wicket stand of 109 to secure the first innings points.

Suffan Hassan (35), Justin Mosca (29) and skipper Dan Smith (24) also contributed with the bat for Sydney with Adrian Isherwood (3-25 off 14 overs) the pick of the Magpies’ bowlers.

Pound for pound, McClintock is rated one of the State’s most impressive young keepers and has a sound record in the Sydney first grade competition.

“It was such a proud honour to receive the Sportsperson of the Year award,” a chuffed Brandon revealed.

“The Youth Club has an abundance of talent in the various sporting sections with plenty of worthy candidates,” he said.

“To actually win the award from such a great line up is one of my proudest achievements.”

Since joining the North Ryde RSL Baseball Rams as a seven year old, the promising Lee has impressed officials with his catching skills and strong work ethic on and off the field.

By the age of ten he was playing Little League for the Ryde Hawks and was ultimately rewarded for his skilful performances with selection in the Baseball

NSW State Junior Program.

Another proud honour for Brandon was receiving the club’s Darren Mawson Award for his distinguished service, striving to do his best, good attitude and willingness to always help.

Last year the Marist College Eastwood student played up a grade in the Sydney Senior League Div 1 competition and proved a lynchpin in helping the North Ryde RSL Under 16s team go through the 2018-19 season undefeated.

Brandon played a key role in his side’s tie-breaker Grand Final victory over the Greenway Giants, showing an on-field maturity that far belied his years.

As well as being a sensational catcher who has represented his Association and Ryde Hawks Baseball League at the NSW State Senior League Championship, the gifted Lee is also an exceptional umpire.

He is the Umpires Co-ordinator for North Ryde RSL Baseball and umpires weekly for the club in grades equal and above his own.

Brandon also umpires at an Association level and has earned his spurs at the State Championships over the past few years.

Last year he boosted his credentials when he attended the Level 1 Umpires seminar to upgrade his accreditations.

“Baseball is in my blood and I get great satisfaction from the sport - whether it is playing alongside my team mates or simply officiating as an umpire,” he said.

prize award and also acknowledged the young boys and girls who received Encouragement Awards in swimming, gymnastics, cricket, netball and tennis.

“We also acknowledge the tireless work of all our volunteer mums and dads and thank President Jim Morris and the Board of Directors of North RSL Community Club for their continued support of the Youth Club,” said Alice.

Concord-Burwood United Wolves Under 8 Pink team have been crowned Benny Elias Shield champions for 2019.

The Wolves lifted the trophy with a 4 tries to 2 victory over Leichhardt Juniors in the Shield final at Holy Cross College Ryde grounds.

Promising Wolves’ cub Jai Roach turned in a dynamic performance to earn the Player of the Final award.

He is pictured receiving his award from Balmain Tigers great Benny Elias and Holy Cross Rhinos’ tireless Vice President Brad Wilson.

Coached by Simon Yacoub, the talented Wolves demonstrated their power and skill throughout the tournament and ability to work as a team in the pressure moments.

The triumphant Concord-Burwood Pink included Fred Semrani,

Jacob Yacoub, Christian Libro, Matthew Boumelam, Dominic Matulic, Harrison Alexander, Jai Roach, Seamus O’Connell, Micih Camilleri, Cooper Brincat, Eren Orcun and Benji Conti.

Team manager was John Libro and trainers Anthony Semrani and Chris Boumelam.

Players of the Tournament were: U/6s Braxton Van Oostendorp (North Ryde Hawks); U/7s Ashton Grohs (Carlingford Cougars) and U/8s Isaac Miller

(Leichhardt Juniors).

Meanwhile the Tigers 2020 squad is back training before the Christmas break and looking for premiership honours in the new year.

And Balmain Tigers fans everywhere will wish Bouncing Benny Elias a happy birthday this Friday as he faces 56 candles on his birthday cake.
