Mr Alexander was at the Gladesville training session to welcome the arrival of Olympic class gymnastics floor mats which were funded through the Bennelong Stronger Communities Program.

“This new Olympic standard floor is wonderful and as a result we have experienced a big boost in number of young people participating is in our gymnastics club,” Club President Robyn Churchill said.

Goodbye, Mrs Blore production in Hunters Hill Town Hall

Two TWT readers can win double passes to a performance of Hunters Hill Theatre’s new production Goodbye, Mrs Blore on Friday August 23 and Saturday August 24 in Hunters Hill Town Hall, 22 Alexandra Street, at 7.30pm.

In 1964, a young doctor Julia Lewis following in her father’s footsteps as a GP and Kelly Blore, a suburban housewife who is committed to raising her family and who has her own unique view of the world, meet.

What might be a usual Doctor patient relationship becomes an unusual and binding friendship.

The play spans 27 years, starting unexpectedly in Julia’s office and concluding at what becomes their special place.

Best characterised as an odd couple, there’s little hint of friendship in that first encounter but this changes as time goes on and the two form a close union that sees them share many of the key events in their lives.

The play features Liz Lynch in the title role of Mrs Blore.

Last seen in Hunters Hill Theatre’s production of Calendar Girls, Liz has also appeared in Cosi, Murdered To Death and Great Exp;ectations.

Prue Foxe plays Dr Julia Lewis who was recently seen in Play On and Death on the Nile.

The play is written by Australian author Robert Hewett who began his career in the theatre as an actor in Melbourne.

Other plays include the multi award winning Gulls, The Adman, The Blonde, The Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead, Just One Last Dance and the cabaret Taught By Experts.

Directed by Casey Moon-Wottan who has directed Hunters Hill Theatre productions of Its My Party and Proof, this play is guaranteed to make you laugh and shed a tear as you share this pair’s unique journey.

Goodbye Mrs Blore is playing from August 23 to September 1.

North Ryde Rotary Dress Up Fun Run

Italian delights in Hunter Valley

THIS year’s annual North Ryde Dress Up Fun Run is being held on Sunday August 25 in the Macquarie University Sport Fields.

The event is being held from9am to 1pm at the Macquarie University Sport Fields on corner of Culloden and Talavera Roads, Macquarie Park.

This yearwill again be a dress up (optional) walk or run with runners invited to dress as as their favourite hero, film star, comic book character or colourful team.

A fun event - the mothers or fathers and babies pram push - is also on again this year. There are no winners and no prizes as the race is billed as a fun interlude to do something good for your health and give something to a worthy cause.

Registration is now open at $25 for adults, $15 for students and $10 for the pram push.

Open 2km Walk/Run starts at 10am followed by pram push at 10.15am and 5km Run/Walk at 10.45am. The North Ryde Fun Run is a community event organised by the Rotary Club of North Ryde, with venue partner Macquarie University and local community groups.

Proceeds go to fund research into youth mental health and treatment programs, and to other worthy Rotary projects.

Dozens of aspiring local gymnastic stars have had their representative hopes boosted when Gladesville RSL Gymnastics Club installed a new mat this week.

The new mat was funded through lobbying from Bennelong MP John Alexander OAM as part of the Bennelong Stronger Communities Program Round Five funding.

It was installed this week and Club President Robyn Churchill described it as a launching pad for aspiring Olympians.

“This new Olympic standard floor is wonderful and as a result we have experienced a big boost in number of young people participating is in our gymnastics club, which is great for them as well as for our club’s future viability,” Club President Robyn Churchill said.

“It is also perfect for identifying our next Olympic gymnastics gold medallist!”

Mr Alexander said other clubs can benefit from the $22.65 million Stronger Communities Program Round Five which is open for applications.

He said these groups need to submit expressions of interest before the September 6 deadline.

“These investments in vital local infrastructure for the people of Bennelong are the sort of projects that bring our communities together, strengthen social engagement, build community participation and create vibrant and viable communities into the future,” he said.

Funding applicants need to obtain an Expression Of Interest form from Mr Alexander’s office.

Other local groups to receive funding include the Christian Community Aid Service, the Salvation Army, the Epping Boys High School P & C Association, the Denistone East Community Tennis Courts Committee, the St Vincent De Paul Society, Morling College and the Parramatta River Sailing Club Co-Op. 2019

LETTERS to the Editor Best abortion solution is life Dear Sir,

I am appalled by the stealth of the coalition of the fifteen NSW State MPs, who revealed on Sunday July 28 their intention to present and push through in record time, a radical and unacceptable bill, with the Orwellian title “Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill 2019”.

Why the hurry? If the content of a bill is excellent, surely it is reasonable to allow adequate time for genuine public consultation, discussion, debate, thrust and parry.

Behind the cover of “health care” however are inclusions out of step with the sentiment of many in the community.

Such inclusions being i) selective sex abortion ii) late term termination for a full term viable baby iii) abortion for financial hardship iv) no cooling off period.

The abortion debate is an emotive one, but it has to be allowed to occur as the stakes are so high, in fact extreme.

Abortion involves the cessation of a person’s life.

We each get one Life. What is more valuable than Life?

When an abortion takes place, a unique and precious Life is no more and will never return.

If those in the abortion industry cared for mothers as much as they claim, genuine counselling that presents all the alternatives would be offered to the precious, often vulnerable, struggling, afraid women; these include the caring options of real help to keep their babies (which are available), or adoption (so the children can live).

It’s time for all of us to face this difficult issue; extending our hearts and hands to mothers, fathers and babies in challenging situations.

I pray to God that our elected NSW State MPs will refuse to legislate more death. The best solution is Life.

Lots of stairs to new civic hub Dear Sir,

The latest image of the New Heart of Ryde is about five metre high external concrete walls and stairs, lots and lots of stairs for anyone wanting to go to the Community Centre lobby.

I think I preferred the rooftop bar as the lead image).

At twelve abreast those stairs can handle hundreds of people at any given moment and I wondered why.

Then I realised that in an

emergency with hundreds fleeing in panic from the Heart of Ryde they would be trapped like rats by the external concrete walls (with even more barriers around the Centre). I n that panic situation prams, wheelchairs, and arthritic knees would be of no concern as the stairs provide the primary form of escape.

Personally I prefer community centres without so many stairs and barriers, but this is to be a hugely expensive monument to the grandeur of Ryde Council.

Further to the two majestic centuries by Steve Smith in the First Test at Edgbaston, I heard a commentator say, the BBC have found a weakness in his batting Steve always gets out in the 140’s!

Pro abortion vote by local MPs Dear Sir,

I wonder how many Ryde residents knew of Victor Dominello’s extreme proabortion stance when they voted for him at the last state election.

Not only did he this past week vote to legalise abortion to birth here in NSW, he voted against an amendment that would render medical care to babies born alive after an unsuccessful procedure, instead allowing them to be left to die.

Mr Dominello ironically used his conscience vote in parliament to deny doctors the right to conscientiously object to referring for an abortion, thus denying them one of the most basic tenets of our democracy: freedom of conscience.

Gladys Berejiklian and the Liberal Ministers who voted for this appalling legislation have shown their utter contempt for the people of this state by trying to ram through this bill with as little public consultation and scrutiny as possible, betraying the vast majority of their conservative base who find the extreme nature of this bill horrifying.

We know from Queensland that in 2015 (note, before abortion was legalised there) that 27 babies were born alive after an abortion procedure and left to die.

There are similar statistics in Victoria, and these are just what we know of.

that in NSW there are currently 35,000 abortions annually.

Worse still, this legislation does nothing to protect women who are in situations of being coerced into abortion.

Nor does it prevent the aborting a healthy baby for reason of sex-selection and an amendment that would prevent this was voted down.

In fact, it will threaten with prosecution any doctor who will not refer a woman seeking an abortion for this reason.

This is an extreme bill, introduced by a Greens MP and co-sponsored by our Health Minister Brad Hazzard, supported by Gladys Berejiklian and voted for by our own representative Victor Dominello.

We need to understand that our freedoms that we treasure here in Australia are being eroded and sold out from under us by our very own Gov-

ernment representatives.

This bill requires no hyperbole. It really is as bad as they get.

People need to stand up now and be counted because soon it will be too late.

Proposed new Civic Hub looks good Dear Sir,

The plans for the new Civic Hub at Top Ryde look inspiring.

A dedicated cultural and social hub available to all residents on our public land doesn’t seem too much to ask after a developer frenzy decade.

I think the proposed Civic Hub area will draw a wealth of activity into the area and create opportunities and benefits that will last well into the future.

Ex local nurse submission to Upper House Abortion inquiry Dear Sir,

Here is the basis of my submission forwarded to the Legislative Council Committee inquiry into the Abortion Bill with a few additional comments.

I do not want my name published in respect for my family should you decide to print this.

I was pleased to read our local member Anthony Roberts MP voted against the Bill in the Legislative Assembly. It is now up to the Legislative Council to decide the future of these late term babies.

Will these perfectly formed babies with heartbeats be given a chance of life through adoption or be sentenced to death.

I would like to encourage more people who share my concerns to write to the Legislative Council expressing their views.

The time for responses should be extended beyond the current date of August 13.

This is too rushed for such an important issue.

My concern with the Abortion Bill is the late date for terminations and what happens to these babies who look perfect and have a beating heart.

A mentally ill woman was having a late term abortion and having her tubes tied following multiple births.

A ‘legal’ termination. I was the junior scrub nurse which required me to do non sterile duties.

When the baby was delivered by Caesarean section it was given to me in a large stainless steel kidney tray.

It was a perfectly formed little baby and I noticed a heart beat.

I didn’t know what to do so I wrapped it in cotton wool to make it more comfortable in the cold tray.

When the procedure was completed I showed the baby to the sister in charge and asked her what to do stating I saw the heart beating.

She took it from me and sent me back to complete my duties preparing the theatre for the next patient.

When I returned to the scrub room I asked the wardsman what would happen to the baby. He said it would be thrown into the hospital incinerator. I was horrified and this has tormented me for years.

I consider there should be an inquiry in to what is done in Hospitals with late terms babies who look perfect and have a beating heart after delivery.

Are they still thrown into hospital incinerators or are their lives ended in in some other way? Are they baptised before sending them to an incinerator or other form of ending their chance of life?

I consider there are many people desperate to have a baby who would love the opportunity to give them a chance of life instead of the alternative of death.

Will you please investigate the current situation with late term babies delivered with their hearts beating.

If necessary delay this Bill or make amendments to address whether they will be given a chance to live and bring joy to those who are desperate for a baby of their own.

FORMER HOSPITAL NURSE Hunters Hill

Giving a hand up and doing it for our farmers WITH THE drought not easing or any rainfall in sight, the farmers around the Tamworth region are doing it tough and have been for a while.

I wanted to help and this came about seeing a group on Facebook “Doing it for our Farmers - giving a hand up”.

They have been running a drop in/pantry centre where farmers can come in have a chat and take some goods that have been donated to the group FREE of charge easing the burden a little to these families.

I decided to join this amazing charity group and then started communicating with SueEllen Wilkin who is the group’s Administrator.

What an inspiration SueEllen is, she has proved to be a real driving force behind Doing It For Our Farmers.

By connecting with Sue Ellen and co I was able to find out how I could help by working hard to collect donations of tinned food and other goods etc.

All the volunteers are dedicated to raising awareness and supporting our local farmers.

So I am off to Tamworth with some family members and a few friends on

Saturday August 24 to deliver donations that we have collected of nonperishable goods to the Pantry at Tamworth. * * * I HAVE spent the past few weeks reaching out to family, friends and local businesses to drum up some meaningful donations plus putting a post on Facebook asking for donations of nonperishable goods.

Tinned food, pasta, rice, sauces, treats such as biscuits, lollies, bottles of juices, soft drink, cleaning materials, sanitary items, dry shampoo and desperately needed bottle water, hand wipes and hand gel sanitiser as water is so scarce.

We also need donations of sunscreen, Bushman’s insect repellent, gluten free items, condensed milk, tinned fruit and last but not least cordial to mask the taste of bore water.

There is still plenty of room left in the trailers and cars, so if you’d like to help by donating any of the above items, we and the farmers would greatly appreciate it.

The drought has wiped out stock, killed crops and driven people to the wall but we keep fighting.

Doing It For Our Farmers will keep help farmers through pantry and vouchers for as long as we can.

Police warn of home security risk

SENIOR CONSTABLE Shane Carne from Gladesville Police (pictured) was part of a police team that letterbox dropped crime warning pamphlets across the Hunters Hill Municipality last week The police letterbox drop pamphlets urges residents in apartment blocks to lock up their garage security cages, in response to a recent spate of robberies.

“Over the past few weeks there have been several break and enters across the Ryde Police Area Command, particularly in the Meadowbank and Epping areas,” Police said.

“Thieves are targeting basement car parks and gaining access into garage and storage units.

“Readers of The Weekly Times can play an important role in maintaining their apartment security

by always locking the car, including the boot and remove all valuables from sight.”

Police also advise residents to ensure they have a secure lock.

“Hardened steel locks are more expensive but generally thwart bolt cutters.

“Take photographs of your bicycles to provide to police should it go missing and record the serial number of your bicycle and keep it in a safe place as well as consider using more than one security method when not using your bicycle.”

Police further advise to mark all property and re-

cord any serial numbers as well as conceal property in a locked cupboard so it is not easily identifiable.

“When exiting and entering the carpark, police encourage residents to wait on the driveway until the security gate has fully closed before driving away.

“Residents should also ensure that their garages and storage units are locked, and they have no valuable items in view.”

Ryde Secondary College to host three day creative arts festival!

RYDE Secondary College will showcase a three day arts festival from next Wednesday.

Titled the “RSC Creative”, the festival will be held in the college’s Multi Purpose Centre and will feature a concert from 6.30pm on Wednesday night.

It will showcase music and dance ensembles as well as the Stage Four Massed

Choir and the Year 12 HSC soloists.

“The three day art exhibition will open on Wednesday at 3.30pm and will display a diverse range of student artworks in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation, digital media, video and sculpture,” event organisers said.

Parramatta reveals the past and the future at Sydney Science Festival

THE City of Parramatta’s Sydney Science Festival wraps up this weekend with great activities for people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the past and visit the future.

Events include robotics and exciting archaeologicalthemed activities which Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said will dig into Parramatta’s past.

“Our program has something for everyone, providing incredible opportunities to learn about and better understand Parramatta’s past, present and future with the help of leading scientists, archaeologists and members of the Darug community,” he said.

“From behind-thescenes archaeological tours and interactive robot workshops to bush detective schools and explorations of ancient remedies, Parramatta’s rich natural and cultural history will be showcased and I invite everyone to share in the excitement of National Science Week by coming along to our fantastic and diverse events.”

Lord Mayor Wilson said the events highlight the futuristic vision for Parramatta.

“Parramatta is a constantly evolving Smart City that is using innovations in science and technology to shape its future,” he said.

“This is the place to be for the 2019 Sydney Science Festival and National Science Week.”

Visitors can join the archaeologists who excavated significant sites across the City for exclusive Science of Archaeology tours and discover ancient bush remedies at a Bush Medicine Workshop at beautiful Lake Parramatta.

It also provides a rare opportunity to visit Aboriginal lands and former hospital sites on the Sawbones to Specialists walking tour to explore how scientific knowledge has changed medical practice in Parramatta.

At Sydney Olympic Park, children can enjoy a range of free

activities at the Innovation Games at GIANTS Stadium, a partnership between the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and GWS Giants.

“From interactive science shows and an augmented reality treasure hunt, to BMX demonstrations, wildlife displays and sport and fitness activities, Sydney Olympic Park is the place for kids of all ages to get inspired this Sunday August 18,” Sydney Olympic Park Authority Director of Place Management Susan Skuodas said.

In Parramatta there are also exciting educational experiences for children including: uncovering animal clues at The Bush Detective School; developing bridge-building techniques at the Building Bridges workshop; and hands-on palaeontology at Digging Up Deep Time.

The City’s libraries are part of Science Week where robots Pepper and Nao have been greeting visitors.

Children can learn how to make rocket ship at Straw Rockets and Space Craft as well as explore simple and powered machines using LEGO at the STEM LEGO Club.

The City of Parramatta has participated in the Sydney Science Festival for the past three years.

Council’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism team has been partnering with Westmead Hospital, Urban Growth, Casey and Lowe Pty Ltd, Comber Consultants, and the Darug community to bring the 2019 Sydney Science Festival to life across the City.

East Ryde residents call for crisis talks with Optus over mobile phone street safety

TERRIFIED East Ryde residents have called for urgent talks with Optus after they received letters last week about a proposal to erect mobile phone power poles in their street.

Their call for urgent talks is backed by local councillor Penny Pedersen and they will seek the support of Bennelong MP John Alexander this week.

The Optus letter gives them until the end of the month to put their concerns which has left them scrambling to alert as many other residents as possible before the deadline.

They hope some neighbours may also have seen an Optus note taped to a pole on the corner of Twin Road and Cressey Road.

“There was only this one note taped to the pole and we do not think the local school was notified, which is appalling because a lot of children go to schools here,” the Buriak family said.

Nor was the City of Ryde Council, which only found out about it when residents contacted Councillor Pedersen with fears that the power pole transmissions may be dangerous.

“I share the safety concerns of the residents and the other issue I have is that these telecommunication units are right next to Wollumatta Park, which a nature reserve and we have no idea how this will impact on the wildlife, particularly on the protected

bats who rely on their sonar,” she said.

“There has also been a lack of community consultation and a significant number of Chinese speaking residents who live here may not aware of this, because the Optus letter was only in English.”

A recent proposal for the mobile phone poles from the TPG company was withdrawn after “safety concerns” from residents.

“Although we have no proof that this equipment is hazardous to these local families, the anxiety this issue is causing is very detrimental to their health,” Clr Pedersen said.

Local protestor Chris Beer conceded that Optus would not put equipment in a residential street that fails to meet Australian safety standards.

“Optus would have ensured that the proposed mobile base station complies with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency guidelines for public exposure before having proposed it for installation,” he said.

“But these (standards) are inadequate to protect me from potentially harmful electromagnetic field radiation exposures.

“The biological harm that this EMF radiation

poses to humans and animals is substantiated in more than 10,000 peer reviewed literatures.

“More than 100 million people worldwide have been estimated to have developed electro-hypersensitivity as a result of cumulative EMF exposures from wireless devices which include those transmitted by mobile phone towers.”

Skeptical of any scientific data offered by Optus, the residents would nonetheless welcome a medical opinion.

“Doctors around the world are calling for the urgent halt to further wireless technology rollouts,” Mr Beer said.

Councillor Pedersen said she is disappointed the motion to hold urgent talks with Op-

tus was not passed at the last council meeting.

“The Liberal councillors didn’t turn up to vote and so we did not have a quorum, which is a terrible outcome for the families who

brought their children along to listen to the debate.

“With time for a meeting with Optus running out we hope John Alexander will see that this is a public safety issue and support us.”

New signs to check speed CITY of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale has urged motorists to obey speed limits and be aware of pedestrian safety.

The Mayor’s appeal was made in Buffalo Road, Ryde on Thursday where he launched one of several new signs that

make motorists aware of their speed.

The sign is near Ryde Secondary College and was welcomed

by School Principal Cassy Norris and Deputy Principal Stephen Plummer who are active campaigners for a safe school road precinct.

“The speed check signs inform motorists the speed that they are travelling and notify them to slow down if they are over the speed limit,” Mayor Laxale said.

“These traffic calming devices have proven to be highly effective at slowing motorists down particularly in school zones and neighbourhood streets.”

Six speed check signs have been installed at Buffalo Road, near Malvina Street and near Providence Road as well as at Gardener Road in Ryde, Lancaster Road in Melrose Park and Terry Road in Ryde.

Each location for the speed check signs were determined by speed counts, resident concerns and other data collected by the Citry of Ryde Council. ”Pedestrian safety in our neighbourhood streets is a priority for the City of Ryde and these new speed check signs will go a long way in reminding motorists to keep to the speed limit, particularly in areas where there is high pedes-

In addition to the speed check signs, four mobile speed check trailers are undergoing upgrades before being placed back in targeted locations in the community.

The initial locations for the mobile speed check trailers will be

Kingsford Avenue in Eastwood, Norma Avenue in Eastwood, Ada Street in North Ryde and Short Street in Gladesville.

The City of Ryde will also run the Slow Down In Our Street bin sticker campaign in these streets while the trailers are in place.

The trailers will remain for a minimum of four weeks and then moved to a new location.

How to build resilient kids RESILIENCE refers to a person’s ability to bounce back after a negative experience.

Research shows that children with a high level of resilience have a much better chance of developing and sustaining good mental health when they enter adulthood.

Happy and successful Epping Rotary Changeover SIXTY five people attended a very enjoyable and energetic Epping Rotary Changeover on Monday night at The Epping Club.

Outgoing President Bruce Jacob said that most in attendance were in the luckiest top one per cent of the world’s population and that those in Rotary were even luckier as to be involved in such a great

20 year old who drove through wall was “one very lucky person”: NSW Ambulance A WOMAN unsuccessfully attempted to leave Ryde Hospital last Friday night, taking the wrong exit and wedging her car in the adjacent ambulance station brick wall.

The 20-year-old P-Plate driver was trapped in her vehicle for about 45 minutes before she was freed by conveniently-located NSW Ambulance paramedics and officers from Fire and Rescue NSW. “She’s one very lucky person,” a NSW Ambulance spokesman at the scene said.

He said the woman sustained minor ankle injuries and was trans-

ported to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Police have been told that just before 8pm on Friday, a vehicle in the carpark of Ryde Hospital on Denistone Road, Denistone, lost control and crashed into the brick wall.

No one else was injured, the ambulance station sustained minor structural damage and two ambulance

vehicles were left with minor damage as a result of the crash.

Officers attached to Ryde Police Area Command attended the scene. They do not believe the woman had been speeding and are investigating the crash.

Woman snaps at police on bus in Hunters Hill

A WOMAN has been charged with assault after she tried to bite a police officer in Hunters Hill on Thursday.

The 41 year old Austral woman was arrested after she refused to get off a bus in Gladesville Road where she clinged onto a bus seat and resisted police attempts to remove her.

It is alleged she was reported to police for stealing from a shopping centre in Macquarie park around 11pm before boarding the bus.

She was charged with Assault Police and Resist Arrest and was refused bail to appear in Burwood Local Court. **** DRUGS and a knife were found on a 27 year old suspect in West Ryde

Police allege a search of the man found a bag of the deadly street drug “ice” as well as a pipe used to administer the drug.

A 25 centimetre kitchen knife with electrical tape wrapped around the handle, a box cutter with three blades and a laser pointer was also found.

He was arrested and taken to Ryde Police Station where he was charged with Possess Prohibited Drug and Possession of a Knife in a Public Place.

A date for his trial in Burwood Local Court has not been set.

The arrest was part of a police patrol the West Ryde Area that focussed on Adelaide Street and Grand Avenue.

Fourth title for rookie bowler Scott

LANE Cove Bowling Club sensation Scott Bonthrone has continued his meteoric rise on the local lawn bowls circuit by capturing a fourth title. The talented rookie recently added the club’s Major Singles crown to his impressive list of triumphs in 2019 after toppling Club President John Lloyd 31-18 in an entertaining final. Bonthrone is pictured right with runner up Lloyd and umpire/Club Chairman Bevan Piper. The Major Singles win has capped an amazing year for rookie Scott, who has also collected the Zone 9 President Singles; Club Fours, Major Pairs and Minor Singles titles as well as finishing runner up in the Club Triples. Quite a feat for a first year bowler.

Region 16 title for champ Jeanette NORTH Epping Women’s Bowling Club Singles champion Jeanette Swan recently clinched the Region 16 title in the 2019 State singles.

Hot shot Jeanette defeated Ros Lightfoot (Denistone) 25-14 and then mastered strong winds and a fast green at Greenlees Park to down Maelene Reynolds (Northmead) 2521 and advance to the NSW State Champion-

ship play-offs on September 6-7 in Tamworth. As well as her personal triumphs, Jeanette was a key member of the North Epping team that also included Judy Thorp, Bernadette Trompp and Vivienne Riley that finished runners up in the Womens District Senior Fours and also played with Vivienne in the District Senior Pairs team that also finished runners up.

Hawks shape up for bumper finals series

RYDE EASTWOOD rugby league teams are gearing up for semi final action in the 2019 NSWRL Combined Sydney competitions.

At the business end of the season, the high flying Hawks have zoomed into title calculations in the Under 18 Gold, Under 20 Gold and the Eastern Conference Open Age Women divisions.

Ryde Eastwood U/18 Gold team have finished minor premiers despite suffering their only losses to date in the final two preliminary rounds to Clovelly Crocodiles and the Newtown Junior Jets.

The Hawks - who were pipped 30-28 by the Jets - have topped the table on 28 points and meet second placed Berala Bears in a major semi final this Sunday at T.G Millner Field with the victors to advance to the Grand Final to be staged on either August 30/31 or September 1.

A revved up Newtown side upset the Hawks with a late try to snatch victory at Snape Park Maroubra last Sunday and secure a finals berth.

Both teams were locked 10-all at the break before the Jets jumped to a 24-10 lead after the interval.

The Ryde Eastwood cubs then lifted with converted tries by lock Jason Smyth, winger Villi Rauvouvou and prop Bray Guyan with Jesse Provan adding the extras.

Leading 28-24 in the dying moments, the Hawks looked set to collect the points until conceding a late try.

Powerful forward Guyan turned in a non stop performance for

the Hawks with support from prop Anthony Bayeh and Tigers’ S.G Ball half back Hayden Essery.

MEANWHILE undefeated Ryde Eastwood feature in the Combined Sydney U/20 Gold finals after a 17-0 victory over Leichhardt Wanderers last weekend.

The 14 year old experienced a big thrill recently when he achieved his important 100 games milestone during the Woodies final home round clash against Southern Districts at T.G Millner Field.

A highlight for Will -the son of Ryde City councillor Trenton Brown - was the special plaque he received on the day from former Wallaby centre and Eastwood Rugby Club President Brett Papworth in recognition of his tremendous feat.

The presentation was also made in the presence of Barry Budd, who has organised the Eastwood District ball boys for more than 20 years, along with recruiting and organising ball kids for the NSW Waratahs and the Wallabies.

MEANWHILE Eastwood first grade rugby team advanced to the semi finals of the NSW Intrust Super Shute Shield competition after sinking Eastern Suburbs 24-21 in a qualifying final last Sunday at T.G Millner Field.

Eastwood seconds suffered a 27-20 loss to Randwick while the thirds were defeated 41-12 by Warringah in their respective qualifying finals at Pittwater Rugby Park.
