Granny Smith Festival Saturday Greet & Meet 2019 TWT Queen Lucy LUCY FANG of Marsfield was named and crowned 2019 TWT Miss Eastwood Granny Smith Festival Queen last Saturday at Eastwood Shopping Centre gala presentation.

Ryde Deputy Mayor Clr Simon Zhou announced the winner who was crowned and sashed by reigning Queen Divyah Ahlawat, pictured left.

Queen Lucy will star in this Saturday’s Granny Smith Festival Grand Parade along with other Grand Finalists commencing at 9.30am from Lakeside Road near Eastwood Uniting Church.

Gala prizegiving ceremony will follow the Grand Parade and official opening on centre stage back in Eastwood Shopping Centre. All welcome.

Letters to the Editor Catastrophic weather predictions disputed Dear Sir, In answer to Mike Hilder’s letter in last week’s TWT I do not agree with the catastrophic weather predictions that he and others, who think the same as he does,adhere to.

I am now eighty one and back in 1949 while my father was building a house for my mother on a block in Menangle Park we slept in a canvas tent through winters when it was warmer for my father, my brother Don and myselfto sleep in a greyhound kennel than sleep in that freezing tent.

Later in that same house at Christmas I remember my mother, making a baked lunch which my father demanded, on a fuel stove with the temperature near forty degrees Farenheit outside and the temperature inside the kitchen felt like being inside a cooling brick kiln.

In 2007 I purchased a book ‘The Chilling Stars‘written by

a Danish researcher HenrikSvensmark who had done extensive work on the effects of the changing solar winds and the blocking effect the winds have on the incoming radiation from outer space which in turn effects the Earth’s atmosphere with the knock on effect of the amount of electrons set free to form on the clouds beneath which then cause rain to fall.

If that scenario sounds like ‘BS‘then I’m full of it. As far as I know Svensmark’s book is still available.

Putting all that to one side,I am an Anglican bible believer from way back and I simply believe that God’s world will go on adjusting itself without anyhelp or detriment from us, err, ‘carbon units that infest the Earth‘ as I once heard us called in a ‘Star Trek‘ movie.

Community participation is the way to be involved and to have a say on land use planning decisions and actions made by Council. The draft CPP is a guide on engagement in the land use planning system in our area – how Council will involve the community in planmaking and development application assessment.

The draft CPP is prepared in accordance with the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 and must be in place by 1 December 2019.

Mental health funding cuts

Dear Sir, October is Mental Health Month and as a single parent with mental health issues caring for two daughters with severe mental health disorders for twenty five years I am obliged to advocate for a superior mental health system.

This has not worked as governments know there are no votes in this area that they bother to care about.

Funding has never met the needs of those in need except for pockets where it has exceeded expectations.

Cornucopia Cafe is a good story on the premises of Gladesville Hospital that has employed patients and helped them to find employment in the outside world.

Sadly after many many good years the Board has closed this avenue of relief due to funding cuts.

Bus outings enjoyed by many over the last twenty odd years is also under threat to lose funding.

Please community members write to your local Members of Parliament to consider those not as well off as others.

Claim of ‘myopic hate speech’ Dear Sir, I’m so sick of reading racist rants published in the Letters to the Editor section of TWT. And it appears to me the only person submitting this xenophobic nonsense is Tony Ikonomou.

Take his latest offering from 2/10/19. Under the ridiculously insulting editor’s headline “Our earlier migrants were praiseworthy” (presumably inferring that recent migrants are not), Ikonomou explains how hard working the Greek, Italian and Yugoslav migrants were, never uttering a complaint nor asking for handouts.

He then compares them to the “terrorists, drug importers, drive by shooters and Centrelink rorters” of recent times.

He claims that “almost without exception ... these new migrants were from the same two ethnic backgrounds.”

Now a normal well read and well adjusted person would rightly dismiss this as myopic hate speech based on nothing other than prejudice from an angry and deluded individual.

However, some individuals will read this bile and feel it underscores their own prejudices and even offers succour to spread more hate or even act on it.

Australia needs people of respect, inclusion and acceptance not Greeks bearing hate.

Why should not Greta complain?

Dear Sir, What a three-column rant (Jim Simpson TWT October 9, 2019)!

I think what has ramped up climate change comments is the break down in the perceived “natural order of things”.

Having adults getting emotional seems to be understandable, but having 16-year-old Greta Thumberg telling the world’s adult population to get moving is apparently just not on.

Why shouldn’t Greta complain?

In 1997 John Howard, our prime minister, arranged a special dispensation at Kyoto so Australia didn’t have to make much effort to comply and we have done little since then.

Howard was very good at seeking advantage; not good at seeking advancement.

We should turn this situation around and show these children there is no need to demonstrate by us making up for 22 years of trying to restrict ameliorating action on climate change.

Heritage Conservation Area campaign Dear Sir, Fear, hysterics and inaccurate information characterize the ‘NO Heritage Conservation Area’ campaign.

Ryde has seen few protests as deceitful and emotional as the one against the proposal to allocate Heritage Conservation Area (HCA) status, to areas around Denistone and other Ryde designated areas.

This proposal supports an effort to maintain the appeal of the existing housing in the designated area, without increasing the number of duplexes, (2 homes in 1 large building on 1 existing site) population density and associated decrease in greenery.

No HCA would lead to increased parking problems as has been seen around the old Brick Pit and Channel 7 areas in Eastwood, and significantly decrease the inherent appeal of the area.

It is the current pleasant environment and character of the area which has supported increased prices of houses in this area compared to surrounding areas, The State Government has requested Council to upgrade its local planning guidelines, and the proposed Heritage Conservation Areas are part of that process. This addresses the concerns of many residents Council no longer has power to fight for neighbours facing inappropriate development ‘next door’ without the proposed Heritage Conservation designation, as Independent Certifiers can now approve many applications without Council approval.

Information sessions were organised by Council to answer questions regarding the HCA Regrettably, at the first meeting, attempts to answer resident questions resulted in the staff feeling at risk for their own wellbeing from opposition to the proposal.

Council has organised new times which are available on the council web site under ‘have your say.’

A recent photo shoot with the mayor regarding the issue, saw the pro-development group turn up with banners waving, and disrupted the meeting of HCA supporters. (the group of residents who want housing to stay as it has been for many years) Meanwhile, a letterbox drop campaign with many inaccuracies has anonymously (unsigned) appeared in local letter boxes.

The flyers claim amongst many other dubious assertions “that an average roof repair might cost a whole year’s average income in an HCA area”! This is highly improbable.

A new Meadowbank TAFE will be built by this time next year THE State’s first technology-focused TAFE campus will be built at Meadowbank TAFE within the next 12 months, Parramatta MP Geoff Lee and Ryde MP Victor Dominello said on Friday.

Mr Lee is the State’s Skills and Tertiary Education Minister and told The Weekly Times the project is being fast tracked.

“I am proud to announce the delivery of the new digital technology hub at TAFE NSW Meadowbank will be accelerated by 12 months to match the construction schedule of the two new schools,” he said.

“This means a new primary school, a new

high school and new TAFE NSW facilities will all be delivered at the same time.”

Mr Lee stressed that technology will be at the forefront of the revitalised TAFE site, which he said transforms training delivery to be more digitally interactive and industry focussed.

Retiring Joe the barber welcomes new owner Abbas LEGENDARY Midway barber Joe Cascio is handing over the shop after nearly half a century to new owner Abbas Beikverdi.

After 49 years, Joe (pictured right) is handing over the reins to experienced Abbas.

Joe told The Weekly Times he is very grateful for all of the support from friends and clients and looks forward to Abbas continuing the business.

“Every customer is an individual although I don’t say I have had customers, I say I have friends.

“They know that when they come in and see Joe there will be a joke, you’ll have a good laugh and you’ll walk out looking a million dollars with a smile on your face.”

Joe paid tribute to the Rocca Family who founded Midway and insists they are the best landlords in Sydney.

“I’ve even been given an award for being the Best Continental Barber

in Midway!”

“Yes, it has been hard work but I’ve enjoyed my trade and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved,” he said.

“Even in those weeks before the boys went back to school, when I’d be working every day from very early in the morning until very late at night.

“Every day has brought a smile.”

He has been one of the last classic Continental men’s barber’s in Sydney and one of the few that have preserved the authentic style and atmosphere of a Continental barber shop.

There are posters from Italy on the walls, postcards on the mirrors, old fashioned chrome adjustable barber chairs, instruments bubbling away in a jar of sterilising blue liquid

and even a can of Tonizone on the counter.

“I’m 100 per cent authentic,” Joe said.

“I came to Australia from Forza D’Agro in Sicily on the fourth of April, 1966, as a fully trained barber because I did my appenticeship at the age of 10.

“My mother didn’t want me to be a barber and she said, Joe, you’ve got to go school .. while my father wanted me to be a priest!”

In his heart Joe knew he true vocation was being a Continental barber but he didn’t think his destiny was to raise a family in Sydney.

“I told my sponsor I’d only be here for two years and 49 years later I’m still here,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful country and I’ve wonderful children and grandchildren.”

Creative Kids voucher milestone

MORE than 250,000 Creative Kids vouchers have been downloaded in the last six months, Ryde MP Victor Dominello revealed this week.

Mr Dominello said the vouchers save thousands of families $100 per child off the cost of creative and cultural learning activities.

“Parents simply love Creative Kids and have given it the thumbs up,” he said.

“This voucher helps parents plan for creative and cultural activities, which can really add to a household budget.

“This is a significant milestone to help ease the cost of living, representing more than $25 million of savings going back into the pockets of families.

“This program complements the hugely popular Active Kids vouchers which were doubled to two vouchers per child from July 1. For a family with two children, Creative and Active Kids vouchers combined will save you $600 per year.”

Parramatta MP Geoff Lee said involvement in creative and cultural learning activities is critical to a child’s growth and development, but enrolment costs can be expensive.

“School holidays are over and parents will be enrolling children in activities,” he said.

“This voucher can help unlock a child’s creative talent.”

EASTWOOD singing sensation Jack Rodgers will return home to perform his latest hits at the Granny Smith Festival this Saturday.

The 22 year old pop and country music star has just released his latest creation called “Still Can’t Wait” and will perform it live on the caravan stage from 1pm.

His careeer has blossomed since he first performed at the Granny Smith Festival as a five year old dancer with the J-Dance company but he confessed he is “slightly nervous” about his upcoming solo return.

“I have performed cabaret but it will be a

huge thrill to come back to Eastwood for the Granny Smith Festival and to perform in front of hundreds of people,” he told The Weekly Times.

“But what I do best is engaging my audience and I will judge my performance to be a success if I can get people up and dancing and singing along.

“I am particularly looking forward to performing Still Can’t Wait, which is different to my usual style because it

has a bit of a swing beat to it.”

Jack Rodgers grew up in Glendower Street in Eastwood and hopes his parents and his mates from the local Marist College will come along to watch his performance.

“Eastwood is now a multicultural community to say the least, so to perform before people who have English as a second language will be quite a challenge but also an exciting opportunity.

“You have to adapt to the crowd and to the atmosphere at the event.”

He said he models himself on Hugh Jackman.

“When I was younger I used to sing a lot of Bobby Darrin songs and while I admire Johnny Cash his songs are in a key which is a bit low for me.

“My own style is a little bit pop and a little bit country with songs people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy.”

Parramatta lanes sizzle with the flavours of a multicultural world THE PARRAMATTA LANES Festival is set to take Sydney foodlovers on a journey of flavours, with more than 50 different food stalls and five bars to experience today, tomorrow and Friday. ob Dwyer said this year’s festival will be one to remember as 14 lanes of the Parramatta CBD transform into a foodie heaven, where there will be something to suit every tastebud.

“Parramatta Lanes has established itself as a standout foodie event for Sydney,” he said. “ The City of Parramatta is a leading destination for real, authentic food and a lot of it, “We are proud to host a festival with a diverse range of food options, reflective of our multicultural City.

“Parramatta Lanes will offer some new and surprising food experiences for people to enjoy.”

The festival menu spans numerous cuisines including SouthEast Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern and French, as well as some favourite local offerings.

For those after something a little different, head to Horwood Place where The Bearded Bakers will transport you to Old City Jerusalem with their signature dessert, Knafeh.

This dessert is a sweet cheese and semolina pudding, covered in a layer of fine crumbled pistachio (think a hot crème brûl,e).

In addition to the wide range of food available, visitors will also have plenty of beverage options to choose from.

Cocktail fans can head to the Eat Street Carpark Rooftop where there will be a different cocktail special each night, as well as a range of beers, ciders, and wines.

The Roxy Carpark Bar will serve up a selection of Japanese beers, cider, and a special Kanazawa-inspired cocktail. Bar 30 in Dirrabarri Lane, Willow Grove, and Erby Place will also have a great selection of wines, beers, and cocktails.

Parramatta Lanes is committed to reducing single-use waste with Lanes bars providing clean, reusable cups by Ruzi.

There will be no plastic water bottles sold on site, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and use the refill stations located across the festival.

Northern Districts Local Business Awards WINNERS Oh What a Night for Lane Cove Dance Academy THE LOVE of dance has been a trigger for the hard work and dedication that Dianne Pokorny and Jane Moran have dedicated their lives to and this was recognised at this year’s Local Business Awards.

Lane Cove Dance Academy won the Performing Arts Category and was also awarded Business of the Year for 2019.

The Lane Cove Dance Academy was established by Rebecca Mitchell in 1984 at a small church hall in Taleeban Road Lane Cove with one student.

In 2007 It was purchased by Jane and Dianne.

With extensive careers in the performing arts and knowledge of the industry, it now has over 500 students.

Jane and Dianne have eleven like-minded

teaching staff at Lane Cove Dance Academy and through their talent, commitment and creative skills the Academy has continued to grow.

The building of the business took time and patience.

The Lane Cove area has changed demographically and visually since 2007, so we needed to accommodate this.

In 2015 we added two more studios and renovated an existing one and also added extra classes and genres of dance.

We now have four

purpose built studios and over 60 classes per week.

Dianne and Jane are both ballet examiners with Cecchetti Ballet Australia and have extensive knowledge of the dance industry.

They both hold the Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and Certificate 4 in Dance Teaching and Management.

Aim of the Academy is to offer each student professional tuition in classical ballet and dance.

Dance teaches selfdiscipline, creativity, poise, grace, expression, correct posture

and spontaneity.

It improves confidence and builds self-esteem. Dance is an excellent character builder and benefits each and every child either as a recreational hobby or as a step towards a

This year the academy has performed at Eisteddfods throughout Sydney and had wonderful results.

We have students training at the Australian Ballet School in

Melbourne and also in their Interstate Training Programme.

Northern Districts Local Business Awards WINNERS Poseidon’s Catch nets the best fast food takeaway award A LANE COVE take away seafood shop that prides itself on a family tradition of quality and excellence has been awarded the Outstanding Fast Food Takeaway trophy in this year’s Northern Districts Local Business Awards.

P o s e i d o n ’s Catch in Burns Bay Road took out the award after being judged as outstanding based on criteria that includes excellent customer service, quality food and choice.

It is owned and managed by the Semitekolos Family, who are fourth generation migrants from the Greek island of Kythera, which has a reputation for seafood.

Nick Semitekolos told The Weekly Times that his family reputation depends on the standard of every

order taken and every meal prepared.

“No one here is a worker, we are all family and everything we do carries our family reputation,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on being family owned and we only select the best and freshest seafood supplied to us fresh each morning from the famous Claudio’s outlet at the Sydney Fish Market.

“We insist that all our seafood is Australian and comes from waters known for the quality of the

seafood caught there.”

Generations of experience gives the the family a keen eye for the best fish and other seafood.

“For example, you can tell the health and quality of a fish by how glazed the eyes are,” he said.

“But however good the fish is it is very important to know the right way to cook it and prepare it, and this is why we insist that we change the oil we use every day which is also why our chips are crisp and have a true golden col-

our.

“My dad, of course, is from the old school tradition and our family believes in starting from nothing and building up a business based on a reputation that comes from word of mouth praise and recommendations.

“Salmon is our signature dish and we cook it the way our customers ask us to cook it when they phone to place an order,” he said.

Every order is treated with the care expected from a shop that is located in upmarket Lane Cove.

“We have loyal local customers who regularly come in but we

also love to cater for parties and functions and we recently had a huge order for a South American themed night which was a challenge we really enjoyed,” he said.

“Our prawns are especially popular in summer and last Christmas we sold 550 kilos of prawns and we expect to sell more this Christmas.”

Customer service is paramount and the

An exciting time to be in the pharmacy business

IT’S AN exciting time to be part of Australia’s pharmacy business and particularly so for Kamal Kotb.

Earlier this month at a gala presentation at The Epping Club, the Pharmacy4Less Top Ryde principal and more than a dozen of his talented staffers collected a fifth consecutive trophy for Best Pharmacy at the 2019 Northern Districts Local Business Awards.

For most of the few minutes on stage savouring the achievement, Kamal paid tribute to his team, dedicating the award to them and declaring the feat impossible without them.

Kamal was, of course, spot on. The personal touch, product knowledge and the ability to deliver exceptional customer service is the modern pharmacy’s ‘secret sauce’.

So when TWT visited the Pharmacy4Less Top Ryde store, it was no suprise that a smiling Kamal was waiting eagerly at the entrance to greet us.

Well not quite, but perhaps the next best thing - a life-sized, cardboard, point-of-sale, replica of Kamal, reminding customers that he and his staff could now issue Sick Leave Certificates, a service that had once been the exclusive domain of the GP. It was a reminder of the revolution that’s taking

place in the community pharmacy sector across Australia - involving an expanding suite of professional services that enhance consumer choice, flexibility and convenience.

Kamal says his store’s loyal customers think it’s fantastic that their trusted pharmacist can now issue a sick leave (medical) certificate and offer vaccinations.

“It really is! It allows us to concentrate on what we do best, which is diagnosing patients and making sure we give them optimal health services,” he says.

“Why would you block or clog a system that’s already broken? A pharmacist can take over certain roles.

“If we can diagnose a patient with the common cold and flu or sports injuries, for example, and stop them going to work a day or two and it’s within my scope as a professional pharmacist, I will give them a medical certificate.”

Not everybody’s happy about it though. Government plans to enlist pharmacists in co-delivery of some services - once exclusively offered by doctors - are fuelling an ongoing turf war between pharmacists and GPs. And things haven’t

calmed down after The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, the peak body representing independent pharmacies nationally, began implementing its strategic plan to future-proof the pharmacy industry following its ‘Community Pharmacy 2025’ study.

The federal government has backed the Guild’s 5,723 community pharmacy members to play a more prominent role in front-line health care, with billions of dollars in funding allocated to a broad suite of reforms known as the Six Community Pharmacy Agreement (6CPA).

The Guild’s training and continuing professional development (CPD) arm, GuildEd, this month announcing a 20,000 yearon-year increase in assessments for 2018/19.

While doctors have got their stethoscopes in a tangle, Australians generally can’t see what the fuss is about.

Research consistently indicates consumers trust their community pharmacist and are ready to utilise their advice and services in their health and wellbeing regimes.

In a 2017 Roy Morgan survey ranking of professions Australians trust the most, pharmacists were

among a select group of health practitioners that ranked ‘very high’ or ‘high’ for ethics and honest among respondents.

Nurses topped the poll (94%); doctors ranked second (89%) for the fifth successive year; pharmacists weren’t far behind (84%) in third spot; followed by school teachers (81%), engineers (80%) and dentists (79%) rounding out the top six.

Kamal has embraced the opportunity to offer new services and is investing in training programs to upgrade accreditations for

himself and his Pharmacy4Less Top Ryde staff.

“It (the ability to issue a sick leave certificate) has only become available to pharmacies over the couple of years,” Kamal explains.

“But a lot of pharmacies aren’t willing to do the training and be up to date with the latest available programs from the Pharmacy Guild (of Australia) to achieve various accreditations.

“We do the vaccination service, for example, here for the for the common influenza vaccine and not

any pharmacist can do that - you need to do an additional course.”

The alternative, Kamal says, forces a person to further clog a broken system “where people are going and waiting for hours.

It’s inconvenient.”

She was one of four category winners recently announced by Scouts Australia NSW collecting the Venturer Scout of the Year Award.

Other recipients were Megan Visser who was named Cub Scout of the Year; Jacinta Gomez, Scout of the Year and Jack Millet, named Rover Scout of the Year.

The award, created by the Scouts NSW Youth Council, celebrates young people who demonstrate exceptional contributions in the community through Scouting, making a considerable impact delivering on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SYDNEY FC’s championship defence got off to a winning start against Adelaide United in the pipeopener fixture of the 2019-20 ALeague season - but the VAR did nothing to add to the spectacle.

By ANTHONY STAVRINOS The Sky Blues’ 3-2 away victory was a valuable one for the title holders, but the VAR left fans of both sides frustrated during the match.

Sydney opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after English striker Adam Le Fondre was thwarted by the Reds’ defence, appealing for a handball.

DENISTONE Sports / Ryde X clinched the recent Mannings Funerals/ Bob Nicholls Triples tournament hosted by Putney-Tennyson Bowling Club. John is holding a framed image of the late Putney bowls stalwart Bob Nicholls. Linda, who is Bob’s daughter, joined her husband and sons in representing the family at the prize awards on the day. FRESH from their official opening last weekend, Padel Sydney North offers four Padel Tennis courts and a social/clubhouse space where people can watch and enjoy food, drink and music.

More than 350 people were in attendance to celebrate the official opening and kickoff a new era for Tennis World North Ryde.

They came from near and far to celebrate the new home of Padel after occupying a temporary pop-up space in Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park over recent years but has now relocated.

Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and only launched in Australia in

2016.

This interesting sport is a more fun combination of tennis and squash and players off all ages and abilities can play.

Padel is played on an enclosed court three quarters the size of a regular tennis court and usually played in doubles for maximum enjoyment.

In this new format, the courts have the potential to attract more participants to the space and serve as an easy

introduction to racquet games.

Padel Sydney North will offer key program areas such as court hire, social Padel, coaching, tournaments, corporate events and birthday parties as well.

RECORD breaking women’s cricketer Alyssa Healy (pictured) is on top of the world.

The former Epping native continues to stamp her mark on the international cricket scene with masterclass performances for the world champion Australian Southern Stars.

Healy was at her dynamic best with the bat against Sri Lanka in Brisbane last week as Australia romped to a world record 18th consecutive one day international triumph.

The champion wicket keeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 112 off 76 balls as the Southern Stars overhauled the tourists’ 8-195 in the 27th over for the loss of only one wicket.

A belligerent Healy cracked two sixes and 15 boundaries and shared an opening stand of 159 with Rachael Haynes (63 runs off 74 balls) - sealing the win with a massive six over long-on.

Her century came off just

71 balls making it the third fastest ODI ton by an Australian woman.

It was Healy’s third ODI ton - but first on home soil and was achieved just seven days after her Twenty20 record unbeaten 148 off 61 balls against the Sri Lankans at North Sydney Oval.

Amazing Alyssa batted through the innings to help Australia post a mammoth 2-226 from its 20 overs to equal the team’s previous highest tally.

Healy, who celebrated her 100th Twenty20 international just two days prior, was at her swashbuckling best - cracking 19 boundaries and seven sixes along the way.

The dashing opener scored the fastest Twenty20 half century by an Australian and the second quickest ton in women’s international Twenty20 matches.

She registered her 50 off 25 balls and brought up her ton off just 46 deliveries - a

tremendous feat.

Local hero Healy is now Australia’s top ranked batter in the International Cricket Council’s ODI batting rankings - zooming to a career-high third and leapfrogging superstar team mates Ellyse Perry and skipper Meg Lanning.

Alyssa burst onto the representative scene from the Sydney Tigers Cricket Club based at Drummoyne and has carved out an illustrious career to date at domestic and international level.

She has figured in numerous National Womens Cricket League titles with the NSW Breakers and multiple World Cup ODI and Twenty20 championshipwinning moments with the Southern Stars.

Healy was named Player of the Tournament when Australia lifted the Twenty20 World Cup trophy in the West Indies last year and helped her country retain the Ashes in England back in July.

Last week’s third ODI victory over Sri Lanka continued Australia’s two year unbeaten streak in the format and eclipsed the 17-match record set by Belinda Clark’s world champion Australian team between 1997 and 1999.

Australia have claimed an unassailable lead in the ICC’s Womens ODI Championship and will again lift the Championship plate at the end of their one day series against South Africa next March.

Ton-up Hassan and Felsh engineer Tigers triumph

A STYLISH century by opening batsman Suff Hassan and whirlwind 98 by unheralded all rounder Ryan Felsch spearheaded Sydney first grade cricket team to a resounding victory over reigning premiers Parramatta in NSW Premier Cricket action at Old Kings Oval last weekend.

After claiming first day honours by dismissing the premiers for 154, the Tigers dominated the second day’s play with the talented Hussan and Felsch featuring prominently with magnificent knocks.

Sydney’s top order batsmen quickly gained the upper hand – declaring at 4-274 in the 67th over to secure a first innings triumph.

Promoted after compiling an unbeaten 85 in second grade in the 2019-20 season opener against Sydney University, the majestic Hassan peeled off a superb 101 off 196 balls as the Tigers posted their first win of the season after two rounds.

It was a maiden first grade century for the prolific scoring opening bat who joined the Tigers in 2017 after stints with Randwick-Petersham and Western Suburbs.

Hassan hit two sixes and seven boundaries during his milestone knock and was ably supported by the skilful Felsch, who fell an agonising two runs short of a deserved ton after hammering the Parramatta

attack to all parts of the ground.

Felsch thumped seven sixes and four boundaries in his cavalier innings but fell an agonising two runs short of a deserved ton when he was bowled by Paramatta’s premiership winning all rounder Adam Turrell after lunch.

He combined with Hassan for a third wicket partnership of 140 after Sydney lost rookie opener Justin Mosca (25) and young gun Matthew Rodgers (35) with the score on 111.

Rodgers cracked five boundaries during his fine knock and added 73 valuable runs for the second wicket with craftsman Hassan.

Parramatta faced 33 overs in their second innings and finished at 4-109 with opener Ben Abbott top scoring with 65 runs off 84 balls.

Emerging off spinner Ben Manenti (2-32 off nine overs) and seamer Justin Rodgie (2-17 off seven) were the pick of the Sydney bowlers.

Lifetime service to football

LEGENDARY Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club director John Joseph (Jack) King received his Queen’s Birthday Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and celebrated this week with family and friends including Hawks Club President Jim McClymont.

The Hawks’ long serving Leagues and Football Club director (pictured) was recognised for his distinguished service to rugby league over an incredible 69 year period.

Evergreen Jack – who turned 91 on June 29 – was awarded the OAM for his nearly 70 years involvement as an official, coach and administrator at grassroots level in the Balmain Junior League.

He is the Junior League’s oldest active life member and still attends club and junior representative fixtures and functions to encourage the district’s emerging talent.

One of the most accomplished officials in NSW Rugby League, he was elected on to the Hawks’ Board of Directors in 1964 and for the

past 55 years has proved a tyro in his various roles as a Football Club and Leagues Club director and loyal ambassador for the code.

Also in attendance at the celebration were Jack’s daughter Cheryl and son Wayne, Jim McClymont’s wife Kath, Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club CEO Carl Pozzato, former CEO Chris McCarthy and wife Linda and Jack’s great mate Ray Doran of North Ryde.

Jack was involved with Balmain’s champion 1959 Presidents Cupwinning team and joined the Hawks in 1964 as a director.

He is a past winner of the Tom Bellew Medal for services to NSW Rugby League (1999) and coached Holy Cross Ryde teams for nine years as well as the Gladesville Bowling & Sports and North Ryde Hawks.

Jack also received a Commonwealth Seniors Recognition Award for services to sport in the Bennelong electorate (2000); an Australian Sports Medal for outstanding service to rugby league (2000) plus the Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian society and government in 2001 – the 100th anniversary of Federation.

Jack was awarded Life membership of the Balmain Junior League and Leichhardt Wanderers in 1959; Ryde Eastwood Football Club in 1971; Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club in 1973; NSWRL in 2004 and Balmain District Football Club in 2018.
