James completed his early studies at the ANU School of Music where he was awarded the Margot Lewin prize for the most outstanding cellist. He is currently based in Sydney and in demand as a chamber musician, conductor and teacher.

Letters to the Editor Immigration is a common concern Dear Sir, Having arrived back from Europe recently there was one common denominator in the places we visited.

When you spoke to locals candidly it was the topic of immigration or rather the type of migrants and the issues that some caused that created the most angst and backlash.

From Italy, to talking to people from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the UK the feelings were similar.

In Barcelona right after the police took away a would be bag snatcher right in front of us, my wife and I approached a senior police officer.

He was a very pleasant man eager to have a chat.

We are sorry for what is happening with the bag snatching he said, we care for the reputation of our city.

It is the Africans he said not specifying from which part of Africa.

Not all but enough to be a big problem he added.

When I explained to him that was relatively minor compared to what is happening in our country he was stunned.

I told him about the thousands of drive by shootings over the years by Middle Eastern gangs that continue unabated to this day.

I told him about the African gangs terrorising parts of Melbourne and Adelaide, smashing and robbing shops, fighting in shopping centres, roaming the streets at will and without fear.

I told him about the Asian gangs responsible for the importation of billions of dollars worth of the drug ice and the devastating effects it was having in our society.

He was incredulous. He could not believe that unlike Spain where people from particularly Africa, would simply land somewhere undocumented and undetected in the middle of the night then blend in, that our government and immigration system would willingly let in people from countries that are creating these massive problems.

Why he asked. Because our government is made up of do gooder morons I replied.

We shook hands and parted ways but I don’t think he understood the word morons.

HUNTER’S HILL COUNCIL EXHIBITION OF DRAFT LOCAL STRATEGIC PLANNING STATEMENT The draft Local Strategic Planning Statement for the Municipality of Hunters Hill is on exhibition from Monday 16 September to Friday 25 October 2019.

The LSPS is a 20 year vision and strategy to guide the Municipality’s future, and provides the context and direction for land use decision making in the area. . The LSPS further interprets the vision for the area already developed with the help of residents and businesses in the Hunters Hill Community Strategic Plan 2018-2028 and responds to the State Government’s planning priorities for the Greater Sydney Regional Plan and North District Plan in the local context.

The draft LSPS is prepared in accordance with the Direction issued by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and the LSPS must be in place by 31 March 2020.

Silly me thought the meeting was Extraordinary for as I understood, Liberal councillors eventually turned up for a meeting!

Dogs classification In off leash parks Dear Sir, We wish to send this e-mail to all at

the Ryde Council to support Jill Crow in her defence of the so called “attack“ classification of her dog - Sassy.

We cannot make the meeting as we already have a prior appointment at the same time. We have known Sassy since our own dog Brandy have been going to this dog park for the last three years.

We have always found Sassy completely friendly and would not harm anyone. Of course he likes to run along the fence as he likes to run as all dogs do especially in this enclosed unleashed dog area.

Sassy only usually barks when someone is running or cycling down the footpath.

There are even children who run and cycle up and down the pathway to encourage the dog to run back and forth with them.

Therefore we do not regard this action as a so called “attack“ and we therefore suggest that the NSW Companion Act Section 16 should be amended to exclude the fully fenced off leash dog park.

Hunters Hill Guest Column Sharing childhood memories and family stories of precious dolls OUR WHOLE philosophy is about giving things another life - that has been a mantra of yours truly and my daughter Cheryl from VS and O Doll Rescue.

We take dolls that would otherwise be thrown away and repair or refresh them so they can be re-loved.

This mother and daughter team rescue all kinds of modern and not-so-modern dolls and teddy bears.

The rescued toys are cleaned, hair de-tangled, spots removed, breaks repaired and dressed in bespoke hand-made clothes.

The process is sometimes a lengthy one, involving specialist techniques and a combination of skills.

Each rescue, or repair, project is different with a different set of challenges.

Sometimes faces are re-painted, eyes replaced, limbs reattached or hair rerooted.

Popular-brand fashion dolls are dressed in retro style and their cars and accessories are customised.

The results are unique dolls which are intended to be played with. * * * WE RESCUE most of our dolls and teddies and source our other materials from charity shops.

The pair make use of traditional craft skills such as knitting, dressmaking and model-making along with a can-do attitude inherited from their forebears.

Our family have always been makers and repairers of things.

This means we’ve picked up skills to work with fabric, yarn, wood, timber, metal, plastic and many other materials.

We also find ways to use materials in unexpected ways, such as discarded alpaca offcuts becoming a doll’s new hair.

Milk bottles become characterful doorstoppers and jars become treasure boxes.

At our stalls we are often asked if we do doll and teddy repairs so we now offer that service as well.

We’ve repaired many dolls, including many quite old treasures, and it’s a delight to see them come back to life.

The VSandO philosophy is one of ‘sensitive restoration’.

We only do what is necessary to conserve a doll so it can continue to be cherished.

A bit of ‘wear and tear’ is part of a doll or teddy’s life story. * * *

we THE THING enjoy most about our work are the stories and memories that dolls often hold - as well as the stories not yet created when dolls will be passed down through the generations.

It’s a joyous occupation to be in when people see a Barbie doll and it reminds them of the one they had when they were young, or they tell you about the baby doll they brought to Australia with them on a ship.

There’s joy in their eyes as they share these memories.

Many of the dolls and teddies that come in for repair are treasured as family members.

In one instance we repaired an old family doll and made her a new silk gown.

Some lace from a family wedding dress was incorporated into the new outfit.

IT WAS my pleasure recently to confer Australian Citizenship on thirteen members of the Hunters Hill community.

Our newest Australians were from a diverse range of nations including China, India, Indonesia, Montenegro, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America.

The guests of honour for the evening were Hunters Hill 2019 Young Citizen of the Year Sylvie Stannage and Hunters Hill Citizen of the Year Peter Astridge OAM. I feel privileged to be a part of the final step in becoming Australian citizens.

Hunters Hill memorial tree centenary commemoration

FOR 100 years a Hunters Hill memorial tree has stood as a tribute to the patriotism of the area’s youth during the Great War and last Friday (September 13) the community commemorated the centenary of the tree’s planting.

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark Bennett was joined by fellow councillors Ross Williams, Elizabeth Krassoi and Jim Sanderson, Hunters Hill RSL sub-branch representatives Belinda Allen and Jim Board, Gladesville RSL sub-branch member Kevin Andrews and Vice President and Hunters Hill 2019 Citizen of the Year Peter Astridge OAM, as well as All Saints’

Church Reverend Michael Armstrong and other community members.

Wreaths were laid at the base of the tree, located on the corner of Alexandra and Ferry streets.

The tree was planted on September 13, 1919, by former Governor Sir Walter Davidson to commemorate the patriotism of the youth of Hunters Hill during World War I.

Historic records show that 402 residents of the municipality enlisted for active service in World War I. Forty-four were killed in action or died of wounds on service.

“There was an enormous contribution made by the Hunters Hill community and all the people that have served,” Clr Williams said at Friday’s commemo-

ration.

Mr Andrews, a retired RAAF Wing Commander and World War II veteran, will also celebrate his 100th year in 2019, on his birthday in November.

He said the tree was a living memorial.

“I congratulate the Mayor, his councillors and the community for bringing together a simple but touching ceremony,” he said.

Plaque to commemorate St Joseph’s student

REPRESENTATIVES and guests of St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill held a short ceremony at Field of Mars Cemetery East Ryde last month to remember Peter Scanlan - the first student to die at and have his funeral celebrated at the college more than a century ago.

Hunters Hill Historical Society stalwart Chris Schofield said the College has had a memorial plaque commissioned and installed on his grave.

“In January 1898, at the age of 17, Peter commenced at St Joseph’s College,” Mr Schofield revealed.

“He died from pneu-

monia in the College infirmary the following August.”

“Peter was the son of Patrick and Mary Scanlan from Eromanga, Queensland. His father died in 1892 leaving instructions in his will for the education of his son.

Come Saturday September 28 he will be donning his widebrimmed cricket hat, applying sunblock to his face and the back of his hands and striding out to the bowler’s end to umpire a NSW Premier Sydney grade cricket match.

Remarkably, he is aged 82 and has no plans to retire from cricket umpiring anytime soon!

John moved into his sunny apartment at Leisure Lea Gardens in Marsfield in 2012 and his quiet authority on the cricket pitch has been evident at the retirement village too, having served as a Resident Ambassador for many years as well as a former President of the Residents’ Committee and now current Vice-President.

John’s love of cricket started as a child and he played cricket as an opening batsman and wicketkeeper throughout his high school years.

After leaving school John and some

friends joined a social cricket club, playing “park cricket”.

“It was good fun and a great way to meet girls,” he revealed.

John stopped play-

ing in his early 50’s and decided to become an umpire, attending lectures and being assessed on the laws of cricket.

“You had to have a pass mark of 95 per cent or more so you

had to concentrate,” he said.

John also travels to Adelaide once a year to watch a Test match and stays at a Living Choice village where he enjoys meeting fellow Living

Choice residents.

An artist concept of Parramatta’s new Aquatic Centre

New aquatic centre wins funding from Sports Minister

THE City of Parramatta Council last week revealed the concept design for the new aquatic and leisure centre.

The revealed design follows an announcement by Sports Minister John Sidoti MP that the State Government and the Council will co-fund the project.

“Parramatta deserves a pool which caters for competition, learn to swim classes, recreation and relaxation,” Mr Sidoti said.

“This commitment of $38.5 million from the NSW Government will help make this happen.

“The NSW Government and Parramatta Council are on the same page when it comes to delivering an outstanding all-year-round aquatic facility that gives the community what they have asked for.”

Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson thanked Mr Sidoti for his support for the project.

“I’d like to thank Mr Sidoti and the State Government for their valuable contribution to this significant project, which is an aquatic centre that meets the current and future needs of our rapidly growing population,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Congratulations to the consortium on their successful submission. I’m excited to see this project progressing and I look forward to working to ensure this first-class facility is delivered for the Parramatta community as soon as possible.

“Our vision is to have a high-quality facility in the heart of our City where locals and workers alike can learn essential water safety skills, as well as have somewhere to cool off in the hot summer months.

“The venue will also be used for swimming carnivals, training and competition, and will provide a range of additional health and wellness offerings all year round.”

The winning design for the aquatic centre – by Andrew Burges Architects, Grimshaw Architects, and McGregor Coxall – was chosen from a shortlist of four exceptional entries following a high-calibre international Design Excellence Competition.

The design of the aquatic leisure centre, which was informed by extensive community consultation, will feature a 10 lane outdoor pool, an indoor pool; learn-to-swim facilities, a cafe, a fitness centre and a car park.

Unique features include sensitive integration with the site’s parkland surrounds, a generous use of space and light, as well as single-level accessible entry and pathways.

The design also takes into account the heritage, topography and other constraints of the Mays Hill Precinct, Parramatta Park site.

“With more than a million visitors expected to use this facility each year, City of Parramatta Council is working hard to build a high quality, contemporary aquatic centre that will serve the needs of our community well into the future,” he said.

Grimshaw Managing Partner Andrew Cortese said the consortium were pleased their concept for the aquatic centre has been selected as the winning design.

“The aquatic and leisure centre offers a rare opportunity to consider a new form of social space for Parramatta, the simple joys of swimming and playing, and gathering with family and friends,” Mr Cortese said.

“Our vision for the contemporary facility strikes a balance in providing for the needs of a growing and diverse community within a World Heritage-listed parkland setting.

“We look forward to working with Council in progressing the concept design for this new community facility.”

Further detailed design work will now be undertaken before the development application is lodged in 2020.

New Heart of Ryde a great investment for community’s future: MP Anthony Roberts

A WEEK before City of Ryde councillors consider the community response to the New Heart of Ryde, Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts, has put his full support behind Council’s proposal for the new Ryde Civic Centre site.

In an exclusive interview with The Weekly Times, Mr Roberts said The New Heart of Ryde was a great investment for the community’s future.

“John Booth and the Council a number of years ago had the great vision to build the Civic Centre,” Mr Roberts said.

“That building has now come to the end of its life and now it is time for that same vision to be applied to service the generations of tomorrow.

“The proposal put forward by Council meets that vision. It will activate the site once again and deliver a significant increase in community facilities that we so desperately need.

“My electorate supports it, local schools support it and I personally encourage everyone to get behind this proposal because it will benefit the entire community for generations to come.”

Mr Roberts’ comments echo the views of community leaders, business groups and local schools who have all voiced their

support for The New Heart of Ryde proposal.

Mr Roberts was speaking alongside disability advocate Rebecca Ho, who also supports The New Heart of Ryde proposal.

“It is very exciting and I really hope this proposal can proceed.

The Ryde Civic Centre site really is the heart of Ryde and what is being proposed by Council will provide the community with modern and adequate facilities that recognise this,” Ms Ho said.

“The proposal also has the scope to greatly improve the sites accessibility and connections to other landmarks in the area , which is great news.”

An update of The New Heart of Ryde proposal as well as the results of the extensive community consultation that was undertaken by the City of Ryde will be reported at next week’s Council meeting.

Following this, Councillors will determine whether The New Heart of Ryde proposal pro- Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts and disability advocate Rebecca Ho support the New Heart of ceeds.

Mayor Jerome Laxale elected by his own vote

HIS OWN vote was enough to have City of Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale re-elected last Tuesday night.

Mayor Laxale received six votes to five to win his third term as Mayor after he received the support of his Labor colleagues and The Greens Clr Christopher Gordon with the four Liberal councillors and independent Clr Roy Maggio voting for rival nominee, the Liberal Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM. Independent Deputy Mayor Clr Simon Zhou

abstained from voting.

Councillor Zhou has been critical of the Council’s perceived support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement which he believes has divided the local Chinese cultural community, where there is support for Beijing’s position.

He was returned as Deputy Mayor when he defeated Clr Maggio by seven votes to five.

Mayor Laxale said

he aims to complete several major projects during his fourth year as Mayor.

“We especially hope to resolve the Civic Centre saga and build two car parks in Eastwood,” he said.

“We will also put the environment at the forefront.”

The Mayor also had a word to say to councillors who voted against him.

“I encourage all councillors to take part in every council process and to be active and enthusiastic participants.”

Pedestrian crossing to be installed near skate park I am delighted to report that a raised pedestrian crossing will be built on Constitution Road West, opposite the Meadowbank Skate Park.

The pedestrian crossing was approved

by Council after pedestrian and vehicle counts taken following the opening of the skate park exceeded levels stipulated by RMS guidelines.

This move will increase safety in an area that has seen a significant increase in the number of pedestrians and vehicles in the area due to the popularity of the skate park.

Hollywood has the Oscars and the music industry has the Grammys – but for Northern Districts businesses, the annual night of nights is Wednesday October 2.

That’s the date of the 2019 Northern Districts Local Business Awards.

Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe said: “There’s no doubt that local business owners and their staff work hard to provide the best possible service to their customers.

“That’s why the annual Northern Districts Local Business Awards presentation night is always such a popular event.

Destination the spice of life

DEVELOPER Harry Triguboff is opening the door to new styles of living in the first stage of a masterplanned community intended to be a Macquarie Park residential market leader.

The four-stage Destination is being developed on a former Goodman Group commercial site in Talavera Road and ultimately will be home to 1,300 people.

Mr Triguboff, founder of the Meriton group, says stage one, Orana, would be more than ‘just an apartment building’.

“More and more people are telling us that they’d like more than a conventional apartment, no matter how good the views, quality and fittings,” he said.

“We’ve responded by using Orana as a model for future Meriton projects.”

Mr Triguboff says Meriton will be including townhouse-like options, multi-level living, and rooftop terraces.

“You could say we’re taking a new path but I don’t see it like that,“ he said.

“You have to deliver what people want and that’s what Meriton’s always done – that’s why we’re Australia’s most successful apartment developer.”

The 2.37-hectare Destina-

tion site adjoins the Macquarie shopping centre, one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, and is on the doorstep of Macquarie University and the Macquarie Park train station.

Initial stage Orana will consist of a single building with one section rising to 27 floors and the other six levels topped by resident-only gardens and a barbecue area.

James Sialepis, the Meriton national sales director, said Orana’s ‘mix’ would include six townhouse-like apartments with rooftop terraces and direct courtyard access to the podium gardens.

“There will also be a selection of multi-level townhouse-style homes, also with private rooftop terraces with turfed areas,” he said.

“The idea of walking outside to something more private than a balcony strikes a chord with many people.”

Orana also would have five four-bedroom penthouses with private roof terraces.

Mr Sialepis said Meriton also was ‘going the extra yard’ when it came to Orana’s traditional-style apartments.

“The Destination site, an island that’s apart from other developments in the area, affords spectacular views that take in the CBD 13km away and the nearby Lane Cove National Park,” he said.

“Our architect, DKO, has ensured that Orana residents enjoy those views, and can lap up the sun, by way or floorto-ceiling glass and generous balconies.”

The Orana’s one, two and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses will have internal areas of between 54 and 105sqm, many will have studies or media areas, and some will have two parking bays in the ground-level undercover parking area.

The talented Gillis performs Carole King’s second album “Tapestry” as if we are listening to the LP record.

Using the songs from the original vinyl release you’ll hear all those classics such as: I Feel The Earth Move, So Far Away, It’s Too Late, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Natural Woman plus the other album tracks.

Released in 1971, Tapestry is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide.

The album received four Grammy Awards in 1972, including Album of the Year.

It spent 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and stayed in those charts for six years.

The first double sided single from the album, It’s Too Late / I Feel The Earth Move spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Singles chart.

In 2003, Tapestry was ranked number 36 on Roll-

ing Stone Magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Carole King wrote or cowrote all of the songs on the album, several of which had already been hits for other artists such as Aretha Franklin and The Shirelles.

Other songs written by Carole King and her husband (at the time), Gerry Goffin, were massive hits for other artists throughout the 1960s, songs such as: The Loco-Motion (Little Eva/Kylie Minogue); I’m Into Something Good (Herman’s Hermits/Marianne Faithful); Chains (The Beatles); Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees) and You’ve Got A Friend (James Taylor).

As a lead up to the performance of “Tapestry”, these songs plus others are presented in a 45 minute set performed live by Suzy Leigh and The Fabulous Nickettes.

Bob’s big shave for a worthy cause

NORTH Ryde RSL Baseball Club personality Bob Ali underwent a big shave at the recent Annual Presentation Day to help aid research into Huntington’s Disease.

The popular Ali took part in the fund raising event - offering to have his hair, moustache and beard shaved off to raise money for research into this degenerative brain disease.

Bob’s 46 year old nephew is a Huntington’s Disease sufferer.

Baseball Club committee member Terry Boyd auctioned off the honour to do the shaving with several members bidding furiously to be the barber.

At the end of the auction the three highest bidders combined their bids and took turns in removing Bob’s locks. The auction with member donations and a portion of the proceeds from the Baseball Clubs raffle raised in excess of $1500 towards this worthy cause.

The Baseball Club is now raising money to buy Bob a beanie and a tube of sun block.

Meritorious award for decorated bowler Ron

BRUSH Park lawn bowls legend Ron Palmer recently celebrated his 90th birthday and to his surprise received awards for distinguished long service to bowls from Zone 10 and Bowls NSW. Ron is pictured receiving his award from Zone Vice President Bill Sutcliffe at the Ron Palmer Triples tournament hosted by Brush Park that attracted 22 teams.

Tiger cub Tumeth named NSW U/16 Player of Year

EMERGING Balmain rugby league forward Brandon Tumeth is a cub with a bright future.

The Holy Cross College Ryde schoolboy sensation capped a memorable 2019 campaign when named the NSW Under 16s State Player of the Year at last week’s Brad Fittler Medal Awards Night at The Star Event Centre.

It is a huge accolade for the local Concord-Burwood United Wolves cub who forced his way into this year’s NSW squad with skilful performances at schoolboy and junior representative level.

Young gun Brandon follows in the footsteps of rookie Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, who was named the State’s top junior back in 2014 after starring for the Balmain Harold Matthews Cup team.

The powerful back rower lined up for the Junior Blues against an U/16 Pasifika team on June 9 at Belmore Sports Ground and impressed keen judges with his work rate and skill.

Tumeth earned his NSW spurs after a strong performance for the NSWRL Combined Harold Matthews Cup representative team in a State trial against NSW Country at Panthers Stadium.

The talented forward caught the eye of State selectors with powerhouse displays for Balmain throughout the 2019 Matthews Cup series - leading the Tiger cubs to the qualifying finals.

An industrious second rower with a huge motor, young Tumeth was identified by officials as a top prospect while helping the Wolves capture a swag of Mod League age premierships in the Balmain Junior League competition.

Tribute to legendary sailor Geoff Ruggles

GEOFF RUGGLES, one of two surviving crew members from the inaugural Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1945, died peacefully on July 30 aged 94.

After skippering Balmain in the NSWRL U/16 Junior Cup series, the promising Tumeth was rewarded for his tireless efforts with an opportunity to test his skills in a NSW jumper.

A powerful running forward and no-nonsense defender, Brandon received the Tigers’ Harold Matthews Coach’s Award as a 15 year old last year and carried that form over in to 2019.

The Pasifika game was held in lieu of a match against traditional interstate rivals Queensland.

MEANWHILE Wests Tigers’ women’s rugby league sensation Emily

Curtain was named the NSW Under 18s Womens State Player of the Year, Emily - a two time world Muay Thai kick boxing champion and four time Australian champion - starred for the Tigers’ Tarsha Gale Cup and NSW Women’s premiership side in 2019 and represented the Blues in their maiden U/18s Origin victory over Queensland earlier this year.

TIRELESS Carlingford Cougars Junior Rugby League Club president Damien Mackey was this year’s recipient of the NSWRL Gordon Lowrie Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mackey was recognised for his sterling service and invaluable contribution to the game as a leader of the Cougars in the Balmain Junior League.

Second Pairs title for Phil and Peter

PUTNEY Tennyson lawn bowls hot shots Philip O’Sullivan and Peter Joint (pictured right) are the bowling club’s newly crowned Pairs champions for 2019.

In a major upset, skip O’Sullivan and the accomplished Joint downed the highly fancied combination of Michael Lansdown (skip) and Ron Rust 25-23 in a pulsating final.

O’Sullivan and Joint surprised many by jumping to an 11-1 lead after just seven ends, however the very classy Lansdown steadied the ship and got himself and Rust to a 23-21 lead with one end to play. Under the calming influence of Joint - who recently clinched the club’s Major Singles title - an O’Sullivan draw shot saw them pick up two bits and square the game with the regulation 21 ends completed. A Golden Point extra end was required with O’Sullivan and Joint surviving to claim a second Pairs championship.

At 21, Geoff was the youngest of an otherwise older experienced crew on Wayfarer when they headed to sea in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s (CYCA) inaugural Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The yacht was owned and skippered by Peter Luke, cofounder of the CYCA. Earlier, Geoff lived in Mosman where he had joined the Sea Scouts as a 15 yearold.

“It started my love of the sea,” he said, recalling, “It was during World War II and a lot of youngsters were sent to Sea Scouts to get a bit of discipline while their fathers were at the War.” It fired his interest in boats and the sea, so at 20, Geoff joined Griffiths Yachts, where he learnt to sail.

The following year, Geoff was given the opportunity to do ‘The Hobart’.

Geoff was wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts, a beanie festooned with a red pompom and a wide smile.

He was bare-chested and bare-footed as they left Sydney Harbour (the crew charging their departure over a bottle of beer doled out in tin cups), bound for Hobart.

As the youngest and most inexperienced, Geoff made himself handy opening tins of food and serving the crew meals and any other

job that needed doing.

Before leaving the Harbour, he cut his leg as he came up on deck. A fellow crew cleaned and stuck a band aid on the small wound.

But you could not wipe the smile off his face.

Surrounded by race memorabilia at his home in Kiama, on NSW’s South Coast, Geoff was interviewed for the CYCA’s 70th race and vividly recollected that first long voyage.

He said he had succumbed to seasickness and suffered an impacted wisdom tooth.

“Lucky for me there was a dentist aboard, but it was so painful, I remember it like it was yesterday.”

Geoff also recalled “being hit hard by a big storm on the first night. It really knocked us around.”

And down the Tasmanian Coast: “At one stage we tacked 18 times in a row. In the end we just dropped anchor off The Isle of the Dead (a cemetery adjacent to Port Arthur for those who died inside the prison camps), which was a bit ironic.”

Wayfarer’s sails, not the best when they left Sydney, were in tatters by the time she reached Hobart. Peter Luke’s boat arrived in Hobart last of the nine starters, in 11 days, six hours and 20 minutes. It remains

the slowest time on record in in the history of the race.

In 2004, Geoff was given the honour of firing the 5 minute warning signal for the start of the Sydney Hobart.

Firing the 10 minute gun was John Gordon, who sailed aboard Winston Churchill in the first race.

Geoff also made it out on the water to watch the Parade of Sail (in which Wayfarer took part) and Sydney Hobart start in 2014.

Geoff was a captivating, old-school gentlemen with a graphic memory and a remaining interest in the 628 nautical mile race; following it each year on television.

He went on to do

two more Sydney Hobarts on Wayfarer; halving the passage time on their second attempt. On the third, Wayfarer sprang a leak and stopped at Jervis Bay to make repairs.

Geoff, due to be married, feared time was running out, so left the boat and headed to Melbourne and marriage to his first wife, May. It was the end of his offshore racing.

Twice married and the father of seven children (the eldest, Christopher, pre-deceased him), Geoff enjoyed a long and happy life.

He is survived by his wife Kathy and children Jeremy, Matthew, Fairlie, Ben, Sophie, Lucy and extended family members.

Tigers Player of Year By the one eyed Tiger

Luke Brooks has been named and awarded Tigers NRL Player of the Year 2019.

Tigers halfback Luke was awarded the KellyBarnes Award for the second year in a row as part of the club’s annual Presentation Night evening at Le Montage.

The 24-year-old becomes the first player to win the club’s NRL Player of the Year Award in consecutive seasons since Gareth Ellis in 2010 and 2011.
